Cozy and comfortable restaurant with nice staff and members. Great views of the water (of course).

First timers! Having recently moved to the Fox Valley we have cruised up and down past the Appleton Yacht over the last few months. We wondered what the AYC was all about so we placed a call and to our amazement anyone can go to dinner (if on a boat), we found a slip and we slid in with ease. The staff was accommodating, the portions generous. I ate the fried haddock - served piping hot with Cole slaw that was not to sweet and not dripping in mayo :). My hubby had a senior platter with broiled haddock / drawn butter. Our daughter enjoyed a very large chicken salad. She loved it. We will definitely come back! Thank you!

We go almost every week for drinks and dinner. The location is beautiful. The drinks are terrific and the food is fantastic! AYC has a great variety of sandwiches, burgers, fish, salads and more. Sitting outside by the water is spectacular!

PRESIDENT SUTTER ANNOUNCEMENTS:

A.   Thanks to John Long for presenting last month’s program on the History of Long

B.   As a followup to last month’s discussion on sound system problems with the Senior

Center Main Hall, we have learned that the Thompson Center is already equipped with a T-Coil Sound System. Those who need hearing assistance should contact Tom.

  C. Reports that the Appleton Historical Society membership now totals 97.

  D. Special thanks is also extended to Gannett Publications for regular coverage in their

      Bulletin paper.

  E. Reminds us all that our November AHS Public Meeting will include our Annual

      Business Meeting. This will include election of members of the Board of Directors.

F. Monthly Appleton History Tidbit: Appleton received it’s first telephone exchange in

    1877, only one year after the invention of the telephone.

G.  One of our Research Specialists, Dave Kalz, has brought in two pictures of very old

     building entrance doors for all of us to review and help identify. These are on display

     on a table in the rear of the hall. They are believed to be from an alley in Downtown

    Appleton.

H.  Special History Event coming up in the area, the Neenah Historical Society will be

      hosting a Living History in Downtown Neenah Event on Saturday, October 4, 2014,

      from 11:00 to 3:30.

I.    We have received for our AHS Archives the donation of an Intercity Streetcar Token.

J.  Just a reminder that previous meeting presentations can be found on YouTube, and                

    Meeting Minutes with Program Summary are on our Web Page.

K.  Door Prize –  was presented to Amy Plamann, who won a Fazoli’s Restaurant Gift

     Certificate.                                                

 AHS CEMETARY WALK PRELIMINARY REPORT:

David Buss, AHS Board Member and Cemetary Walk Contributor, reports that our Cemetary Walk held on Saturday, August 17th, was again well received by the community:

1.    The event was titled Meet the Mayors-Part 3.

2.    Some 30 people attended and received a tour of the graves of 5 Appleton Mayors.

3.    Each location had an actor in period correct costume portraying the deceased. Thanks to the five true-to-life actors:

a.    Tom Sutter.

b.    Nate Kalies.

c.    Reverend Leon Ehlert.

d.    Ken Syring.

e.    Jacob Steinmetz.

Gwen Sargeant, Chairman, will give a formal report at next month’s meeting.

 HISTORY FAIR PLANNING:

James Richter, Co-Chairman, reports on preliminary planning underway for our 9th AHS History Fair to be held at the City Center in Downtown Appleton on Saturday, December 6th:  

1.    The event is held as part of and under the auspices of the Appleton Downtown Winter Farm Market.

2.    Focus will be on Appleton’s Christmas Past.

3.    Exhibits will include Appleton’s Toy and Children’s Furniture Manufacturers, Tuttle Press Christmas Products, and Victorian Christmas Items.

AHS COMMUNICATIONS REPORTS:

Gwen Sargeant, Board and Public Relations Committee Member:

1.    Reported Cemetary Walk was a success.

2.    Summarized upcoming programs and events.

    PROGRAM -   “ History of the Appleton Yacht Club”, Presented by Larry Konz.

Larry Konz Background:

Larry was born in Appleton in 1926 (87 years ago).  He attended St. Mary's Grade School and graduated from Appleton High School, class of 1944.  He enlisted in the Marine Corp and served a four year hitch.  He was honorably discharged in 1947 after two years on the Hawaiian Islands.  Larry returned to Appleton to work in the family lumber business, Konz Lumber.  He married his high school sweetheart, Anne Paltzer, in 1949. 

Larry's father died when he was 37. Larry became the CEO of the firm and was instrumental in expanding the firm and his family. When he took over he and Annie had nine children, five boys and 4 girls, and 7 employees including the office staff of one-- his mother.  The business and payroll expanded rapidly once the children became of age to work.  Today their 3 oldest sons are the officers and the driving force of the corporation--Konz Wood Products Company.  They are responsible for over 100 employees at their two locations, Appleton and Suring. Larry is now retired.

The Presentation:

(1)  Larry and his family followed his parents in being active members of the Appleton Yacht Club. The Club is some 70 plus years old.

(2)  To begin his presentation he felt it important to talk about the Fox River. “It’s what makes this town go. It’s power, the kind of power that makes electricity and recreation.”

(3)  There was a Boat Club that started in Appleton before the AYC. It was a completely separate group, and had a building on the East side of town just past the 4th lock. It at one time had 100 members, but has been out of business since the 1940’s.

(4)  Larry then projected a number of pictures about the AYC and Appleton history:

AA paddleboat steamer going through the locks by Lawrence University1909 or 1919.

BEarly tugboat, the Cook, by Sunset Point. It ran 24 hours a day.

CA later version of a diesel tugboat, about 1950.

DA Cook & Brown tugboat in 1938.

EValley Queen tugboat (1930’s ?).

FA 1909 picture of the Appleton Boat Club, which had individual boat houses.

GOriginal site of the Appleton Yacht Club, before construction.

HA group of old buildings which included the Johnson Outboard Dealer, and it’s next door neighbor Appleton Police Officer Harold Blessman.

IThe original location for AYC was where the City had dumped old concrete on the Fox River shore, which was later used in a seawall for the club.

JThe original clubhouse started life as a boat house which was moved 20 feet into shore.

KAn early speedboat with an inboard motor, named the Eczema, at the AYC shoreline (1936-1938).

LBoats pulled on shore for maintenance.

MAs the AYC evolved slips were built where boats could be lifted out of the water.

O1940’s view of west slips, now replaced by open slips. Also shown is largest boat the club ever had, a 45 foot Chris Craft owned by J.R. Whitman, the J.C. Penney Store Manager.

QLarry’s 1932 Dodge Runabout which he bought in 1942. It had a Langlois 8 Cylinder Engine and 22 foot mahogany hull.

WAYC acquired a gas pump at the end of World War II and sold gas for 17 cents a gallon.

           Wisconsin Avenue. During the war he served as a navigator on a B-17.

J           The AYC donating $1000.00 to the Salvation Army in 2010. Most fund raising

           every done by the First Mates (AYC Ladies Club).

           construction of the new Clubhouse.

NJust east of the club used to be a small building (shack) where their swamper                  

           lived.

OA traditional AYC Friday Fish Fry. Still done today but no longer open to

           general public.  

 Closing Facts about the Appleton Yacht Club:

(1)  They continue to operate with a strong membership. You don’t have to be a boat owner to be a member of the club.

(2)  Most of the Fox River Locks are now open, and the remainder should be opening soon. They are excited about the prospects of again traveling from Green Bay to Lake Winnebago.

Anna and Shawn were my last wedding of the season for 2022, and their wedding at the Appleton Yacht Club was seriously the best! An intimate ceremony followed by the most chill reception — appetizers and good food, strong drinks, and their closest family and friends made the perfect day.

We were so excited to recreate some of the bridge photos we took during their engagement session with all the fall colors — but what we didn’t count on? Homecoming. Dozens of teenagers dressed to the nines all vying for a spot to take pictures on the very same bridge. You win some, you lose some. (At least the gazebo was free!)

Anna and Shawn’s cake topper was the perfect nod to their engagement session. Three dogs is a lot to handle on your wedding day on top of everything else too, so they decided to leave the pups at home and have them there in spirit on top of their cake!

Come by Midtown Yacht Club and enjoy a cold beer and great food cart snacks for a reasonable price.  You’ll find good people and no hassle with a relaxed vibe.  We don’t have a dock to moor your boat, but you won’t need a membership and we aren’t fussy around here.

Pleasantly surprised, service is good so is the food. Great selection of Fusion food, a mixture of Italian, Japanese, European, Asian etc. A pleasantly nice dining experience, highly recommended, a must try!

Best food, best view in Moscow. absolutely faultless from arrival to finish. Best risotto i had for many years absolutely perfectly cooked. The view on Ukrainian hotel and the white house by night is amazing

Had to wait for the food for 1.5 hours and then another 20 minutes for the check. Finally called for the manager and he offered... a 10% discount as a compensation. Simply pathetic! The food is mediocre at best. Not bad per se, but one... would expect something better considering the prices. There are many places to eat in area that are much better. Avoid this one at all costs. Food is very expensive,very pretentious, doesn't worth that money. Portions are very small. We ordered ravioli and there were 4! Four raviolis! For almost 15 euros. Then we asked to bring us dessert menu but nothing, they didn't even bothered, so we payed and left... without dessert. Very poor service for that price. More

This is a very good restaurant. The food is really good, maybe the best in Moscow. The service is also good. The view from the restaurant is great. The prices are very high.

I often visit this restaurant and must say it’s one of the best in Moscow in terms of quality and service. Staff really try hard to make sure that you are happy and satisfied. Customer service is a huge problem in Moscow but Chaika sets... a great example for others in the industry! Food is delicious and the menu has lots of options for everyone! Visited this lovely restaurant with a friend of mine. It was relaxingly warm August evening - so the place on the river seemed like a good idea. We came quite early and the restaurant was not full. The hostesses kindly offered several places to sit... and we chose to sit on the sofas. We had some wine, which was good. We struggled a bit when deciding about the food as few options (scallops) were not available. Fish on ice on display did not look very fresh. To be honest it was an unusually hot August and it is probably understandable that some see food options were not available. However, we did manage to order something and sat waiting and looking onto the river. My long-legged friend struggled sitting at the low sofa and the manager noticed that, offering as a very good, proper table beside the open window. It was nice touch and I was very pleased by their polite observations and immediate reaction to solve the problem. Food was quite good and presentation was perfect. Perhaps I can something about the food, but 1 visit is not enough to criticize or make a definitive opinion. Overall, quality place, which of course, does not come cheap. I would recommend this restaurant without hesitation. More

Located on a boat at Krasnopresenskaya River Bank this 5 Star Restaurant transforms into a party location due to multiple groups hosting events. Impressive wine selection, Asian and European kitchen...

Good location. Nice views. Good choice of food and drinks. European and Asian menu. Nice service. Pricey enough.

Had a large group dinner here. Food was above average and service quite good. The real attraction is the view of Moscow from the river on a nice night. Great place for a larger group dinner. More

The luxurious atmosphere of this place, the view and the location make it quite outstanding. We had dinner here with friends and the dishes were amazing, accompanied by a chilled bottle of Chablis, it really made me feel as if it was a part of... the classic Russian movie. More

Pharrell Sets Sail on His Yacht Rock Era With Surprise New Album

Pharrell appears to be celebrating his 51st birthday today, April 5, with a gift to fans — a new album that’s totally free to stream and download through one specific website .

To say there aren’t many confirmable details about the 10-track project is an understatement. Based purely on the album artwork, the project appears to be called Black Yacht Rock Vol. 1: City of Limitless Access and might be credited to a group called Virginia — though, for all we know, Virginia is part of the title. 

And while it’s definitely Pharrell singing on the album, his name isn’t attached anywhere to the project, not even the metadata of the Mp3s if you download the LP (it’s similarly unclear if he played all the instruments himself or brought in some collaborators). The musician hasn’t promoted the album on his website or social media.

Black Yacht Rock Vol. 1 (if that is the official title) marks Pharrell’s first solo album (if we can actually consider this a solo album) since 2014’s Girl . He’s released two other collaborative singles this year, “Good People” with Mumford and Sons and “Doctor (Work It Out)” with Miley Cyrus. 

Pharrell also has a couple of movie projects in the works. The first, announced earlier this year, will be a biopic of sorts but told entirely through Lego brick animation (it’s fittingly called Piece By Piece ). The other is an as-yet-untitled collaboration with filmmaker Michel Gondry , which will be set in Virginia Beach, Virginia in 1977 (where Pharrell grew up) and feature a cast of Halle Bailey, Kelvin Harrison Jr., and Da’Vine Joy Randolph.
