Exceptional design and performance

In 1993, Thalia was the first Vitters yacht ever built and at that time she was one of the largest ketches. This 49 metre (160ft) ketch is the product of a unique collaboration between award-winning naval architect Ron Holland, interior designer Elmar Meurer and the team of professionals at Vitters. Fast graceful and luxurious, Thalia provides the ultimate sailing experience.

Thalia’s low profile and carefully designed seating areas allow unobstructed views and a feeling of closeness to the sea that is remarkable for a boat of this size.

Thalia was recognised with the 1994 Showboats Awards for Best Sailing Yacht Interior.

Construction

THALIA is a yacht built by G F Wanhill at Poole in 1889.  Her hull is carvel, built of oak frames and she has oak and pitch pine planking with bronze fasteners.  She is cutter rigged with gaff sails.

THALIA was based in Ireland between 1891 and 1914, where there are records of her racing in the archives of the Royal Cork Yacht Club from 1891-96.  She was then based on the Thames from 1914 -1963.  In the 1960s, she sailed to Turkey and the African coast, returning in the 1970s.

A rebuild was started in the late 1980s, and she was then abandoned with no deck.  She was about to be broken up when the present owners bought her in 1993.  Her current owners continue to race her and have a list of all her owners and racing results from Cork in the 1890s, along with a few original bills of sale.

THALIA's design appears old fashioned even for 1889, but she has a centreboard from the American influence and a cut-away forefoot (in 2020 it was reported that she no longer has a centre board).

THALIA won the Centenarian of the Year award at the Classic Boat Awards 2021.

BROKER'S COMMENTS

THALIA is an astonishing throwback to the earliest, 19th-Century days of organised yachting, yet she’s a thoroughly practical, easily handled classic yacht. Wanhill of Poole is a name etched in the history of that period, and THALIA carries that direct lineage with her, together with the old world charm and amazing looks that have rescued this characterful cutter more than once from the chainsaw. Her Millennium restoration undertaken with skill and passion, honoured and enhanced in current ownership, has ensured a long future life, surely well into her third Century. In recent years THALIA has taken part in transatlantic adventures her original designer and builder couldn’t have dreamed of, and she’s been a cherished family cruiser-racer closer to home.

Classic Boat Awards 2021 - Gstaad Yacht Club Centenarian of the Year

Classic Boat readers voted THALIA 'Gstaad Yacht Club Centenarian of the Year' in the Classic Boat Awards 2021 from an impressive short list of: - MARIETTE (108 ft Herreshoff schooner 1915) - OLYMPIAN (William Gardner-designed P-Class gaff sloop 1913) - SUMURUN (94 ft Fife bermudan ketch 1914) - TIRRENIA II (61 ft Fred Shepherd-designed gaff ketch 1913) - TRASNAGH (40 ft Alfred Mylne Island Class bermudan yawl 1913)

The name Wanhill of Poole is firmly embedded in what might be termed the pre-history of yachting: the early to mid 19th Century period before the rise of the "yacht designer", when the builders were also the designers. THALIA is a remarkable link to these times. For fans of 1970s and 1980s British TV series, the Wanhill story could be summed up as a cross between The Onedin Line and Howard's Way. Their prosperity grew through the 18th Century on the back of Poole's immense trade with Newfoundland, when the Dorset town reputedly had more ships trading with North America than any other English port. The Wanhill family built ships at Poole, owned them, and enjoyed more than a sideline as clay merchants. The conclusion of the Napoleonic wars ended Britain's monopoly in North American trade, creating an economic slump in Poole; however the consequent increased safety of the seas - and royal patronage - gave rise to an explosion of interest in pleasure boating. The next generation of Wanhills, brothers Thomas Junior and James, were ready to apply their skills to the designing and building of pleasure vessels, in particular some of the most innovative and successful racing yachts of the mid 19th-Century, culminating in the magnificent and legendary 108 ft racing schooner EGERIA of 1865. Thomas Wanhill's son George Frederick was nineteen at EGERIA's launching in April 1865; all being well he might have anticipated eventually taking over the reigns of a thriving yard, but it wasn't to be. Just over a year after EGERIA's launching, and with an apparently healthy order book for yachts of significant size, losses on the shipowning side of the business - possibly through a reticence to engage with steam power; certainly from increased railway competition - threw them into spectacular bankruptcy. But George seems to have lived comfortably running the clay side of the business, and occasionally honouring his family's wooden boatbuilding and seafaring traditions. He designed THALIA for himself, possibly based on an earlier Wanhill model and perhaps built in the premises of the Allen family's Poole shipyard. The early - probably first season - portrait here shows that she first sported a fiddle bow and had the appearance of a miniature EGERIA in profile. In her builder's ownership THALIA appears to have raced locally and cruised extensively. A summer 1891 Falmouth shipping movement report sees her just arrived from Ireland where she must have been quite a hit as by late summer she'd returned there in the new ownership of long time Commodore of the Munster Corinthian Yacht Club (soon to become Royal Munster YC, now incorporated in Royal Cork Yacht Club), Richard Foley, a shipowner and customs agent at Cork with a country residence at Lismore, County Waterford. THALIA first arrived at Queenstown (now Cobh) on 2nd August 1891, and won her first race there that day at Monkstown Regatta in fierce squalls. Subsequent south coast of Ireland owners were: - 1892 - James W. Nicholson, Cork, possibly a wine merchant there - 1896 - Robert William Belton, Monkstown, Cork, insurance agent and stockbroker - 1900 - John Newsom White, Kilkenny, retired Waterford corn merchant - 1905 - Edgar White, Waterford, his son By 1911 THALIA had returned to England with Frederick Palmer of Boston, Lincolnshire and would remain on the east coast for decades under many ownerships, mostly moored at Benfleet, Essex. Worthy of special mention is Frank Clay, a founder member of Benfleet Yacht Club who owned THALIA c.1932 to 1963. She's still remembered there. By the late 1960s THALIA was a tired old lady, and at one time threatened with the chainsaw at that infamous boatyard of doom, Belsize, St. Denys, Southampton. But not only did she receive a stay of execution, by the early 1970s she was cruising the Atlantic islands, west coast of Africa and the western Mediterranean with the redoubtable Hugh K.B. Roberts. Purchased at Ibiza in 1978 by E. Bruce Willard, THALIA then returned to the south coast of England at Swanwick. Under different ownership, a restoration was begun in the mid 1980s at Combes Boatyard, Bosham, West Sussex, but not finished. THALIA's remarkable revival by Ivan and Fiona Jeffries of Bosham Hoe, West Sussex - preventing another chainsaw threat - began in 1993 and is detailed in the Restoration section. Post-first phase restoration, THALIA took part in the memorable 1998 Champagne Mumm Classic Regatta at Cowes. Then, when complete, the 2001 America's Cup Jubilee Regatta - appropriately so as three Wanhill designed and built yachts had taken part in the original 1851 race round the Isle of Wight. She then made an Atlantic Crossing with the ARC Race in 2003, and remained in the Caribbean until purchased there by her present owner in 2011. For the past decade THALIA's 21st Century pampering has continued under present ownership and she has been a regular sight for sore eyes at Solent classic regattas and in cruising down channel. ©2024 Iain McAllister/ Sandeman Yacht Company Ltd.

Thalia Wins 2021 Gstaad Yacht Club Classic Boat Centenarian of the Year

Gstaad Yacht Club

June 7, 2021

yacht thalia owner

GYC will award the 1888 gaff cutter Thalia the Centenary Trophy at the 10th anniversary of the regatta, on Thursday, 30 September, 2021 during the Voiles de Saint-Tropez

Built in 1888 at the yards of George Wanhill in Poole, Dorset, the seductive gaff cutter Thalia is the winner of GYC’s Centenarian of the Year 2021 Classic Boat Awards.

Thalia has a long history of captivating the hearts of true sailors, including that of Mr. David Aisher, her owner since 2010. He has performed an extensive restoration and she has been his companion for the last decade, during which they’ve travelled together broadly and blissfully. With her owner at the helm, Thalia emanates determination and beauty when they partake in selected regattas.

In the 1890s, Thalia was sailed by the Royal Cork Yacht Club and later returned to the South Coast of England. Prior to becoming the property of Aisher, she had a brief incursion in the Caribbean.

The Classic Boat Awards is organised by Classic Boat Magazine and is a well-regarded nautical celebration within the classic boating and sailing industries, noted in the agendas of sailors, boat owners and sailing aficionados from around the world. Due to public health concerns related to the coronavirus, this year’s award ceremony was broadcast online providing an opportunity for all enthusiasts to follow it.

The lifetime achievement award, one of the highlights of the ceremony, was a posthumous recognition to Mr. Robert Fisher for his contribution to sailing. Mr. Fisher was a competitive sailor, renowned journalist, and writer of over 30 books.

For five years, the GYC has partnered with Classic Boat Awards for the Centenarian of the Year award. Thalia was selected from a shortlist of six centenarian yachts, and the GYC extends its thanks to the jury, who selected the yachts, to the public for voting on their favourite vessels, and to Robbe & Berking Silversmiths for their support on the silver trophy. It will be awarded during the 10th anniversary of the Centenary Trophy regatta, which will take place this year on Thursday, 30 September, 2021 during the Voiles de Saint-Tropez.

The owner of a $3.4 million Lamborghini yacht screamed 'I will kill you' and threw $100 bills into the water when told he couldn't use a private dock

  • The owner of a Lamborghini yacht threatened a private dock employee, per CBS8.
  • The employee said Ajay Thakore mooned and threw cash at him after being told he couldn't use the dock.
  • Thakore, the CEO of Doctor Multimedia, issued an apology through his public relations team.

Insider Today

The owner of a $3.4 million Lamborghini yacht threatened a private dock employee after being told he couldn't be there, the San Diego-based broadcaster CBS8 reported on March 11.

Joseph Holt, a 21-year-old employee at Marriot Marina in San Diego, told CBS8 that he spotted the yacht sailing into the private dock. The owner, whom CBS8 identified as Ajay Thakore, tried to pick another person up at the dock, Holt said.

"I told him respectfully that he couldn't be there, and I honestly was hoping to have a conversation with him about his cool boat," Holt told CBS8.

In a YouTube video posted by @SM-wc9eq on March 10, a dark blue Tecnomar for Lamborghini 63 is seen sailing out of a dock. A man in a gray T-shirt, a pair of jeans, and a cap was shown standing on the yacht. The man appeared to be Thakore, per CBS8.

Thakore was shown shouting at Holt. "I will kill you, you know I will kill you!" he can be heard saying multiple times in the video

Thakore was later shown pounding his fist on his palm and pointing his thumb down before telling Holt: "To your face!" Holt was shown responding by pointing his middle finger at Thakore.

"I really was trying to restrain myself from getting fired from my job or stepping out of line. The only thing I did was give him the bird," Holt told CBS8.

Related stories

Holt said Thakore then took $100 bills from his wallet and threw them at him. He added that Thakore mooned him. This exchange was not shown in the video.

"He was saying I'm nobody, I'm nothing, I work a silly job. He said that he knows people, he has connections, he can change my life and ruin it," Holt said. Holt did not immediately respond to Business Insider's request for comment.

The San Diego Harbor Police arrived at the marina 10 minutes after Thakore's yacht exited the dock, per CBS8.

The Harbor Police told Business Insider that Holt decided to press charges against Thakore and that they are investigating the incident.

According to Thakore's LinkedIn page , he's the CEO of Doctor Multimedia. The company's website shows that it's a healthcare marketing firm based in San Diego. Thakore appears to go by the name Ace Rogers on Instagram and TikTok, where he's noted as being a professional gambler.

Thakore, through his public relations team, told CBS8 in a statement that his altercation with Holt was "regrettable."

"What started as a minor misunderstanding escalated into an argument, and I apologize for my actions and to those who witnessed the unfortunate exchange," the statement said. Thakore did not immediately respond to a request for comment from BI.

Thakore isn't the only CEO who's been called out for threatening another person. In November 2021, an Activision spokesperson told BI that its ex-CEO Bobby Kotick had previously apologized for telling his assistant he would have her killed. The spokesperson added that Kotick's threat was "obviously hyperbolic and inappropriate" and that "he deeply regrets the exaggeration and tone."

In June 2020, Lisa Alexander, the CEO of LaFace Skincare, a cosmetics company, apologized in a statement to the media after she had threatened to call the police on her neighbor for writing "Black Lives Matter" on his property. Alexander said in the apology that she was "disrespectful" and "should have minded my own business."
