The timber kit will be replaced with lightweight and stylish timber look laminate surfaces, with a new contemporary neutral colour palette as specified by Seawind’s interior stylist.

With well over 150 Seawind 1160 boats launched and sailing the world, the design has been well proven, from crossing the world’s largest oceans to chartering in the beautiful locations such as the Whitsundays, Thailand and Caribbean.

The Seawind 1160 platform enabels boat owners to choose between traditional Yanmar diesel sail drives or the significantly lighter 20hp Honda (or 25hp Yamaha) outboard engines with electric tilt, a simple push of a button tilts the engine up and out of the water so you have no prop and shaft dragging.

Full in-depth tour from Learning the Lines

"We're seriously considering the Seawind 1160 Lite for our next sailboat because of the long list of positives this catamaran has to offer. Here's just a few of the most important ones to us: Size - We don't want a huge catamaran. Seaworthiness - Plenty of Seawind catamarans have circumnavigated. Performance - The Seawind 1160 Lite is designed to sail well first and foremost. Livability - This catamaran has got a lot of accommodation and room for a 38' sailboat. All of that combined with the fact that we can set one up with electric outboards, daggerboards, and lifting rudders means we think that the Seawind 1160 Lite might be the best catamaran boat possible for our budget and lifestyle."

ANCHOR BRIDLE

catamaran the seawind

One of the few shortcommings of a catamaran is its tendancy not to stay head to wind on anchor. As wind blows across the bows the boat will tend to twist from side to side around the anchor chain. This effect is combatted by the use of an anchor bridle.

SOLAR PANEL UPGRADE FROM 2X 125W TO 2X 210W RIGID AND 2X 320W FLUSH PANELS

In this configuration we installed 2x 320w flush panels on the hardtop and 2x 210w framed panels off the back of the targa arch giving a total of 1060W. The flush mount panels can contour to the shape of the roof and can therefore cover more surface area, their weakness however is reduced efficiency (our tests showed a 10% reduction compared to the framed panels of equivalent wattage).

Seawind 1170 first look: 39ft passagemaking catamaran

  • Toby Hodges
  • February 8, 2024

The newly launched Seawind 1170 is smaller than many new catamaran launches but should still prove a capable passagemaking multihull

catamaran the seawind

Over the past few years Seawind has become increasingly well recognised for its quick cruising catamarans. This 39-foot Seawind 1170 retains key core elements, including relatively light displacement, plus twin aft helm stations with excellent protection and visibility.

There’s also a removable carbon sprit and a pair of windows in the hardtop to monitor sail trim. However, despite its potential to sail for extended periods at speeds above 10 knots, this is not intended as a boat that will be difficult or energetic to sail: a self-tacking jib is standard and the mainsheet traveller is mounted on the hard top, so doesn’t present a danger to anyone in the cockpit.

Despite being smaller than the existing 52ft Seawind 1600 Passagemaker and recent 45ft 1370 models, it’s still intended as a capable ocean cruising multihull , with bright and comfortable accommodation.

It’s easy to assume that all rugged metal yachts are very heavy. While that was the case at one time…

The owner’s cabin in the port hull benefits from a queen size athwartships double berth that creates much more of a feeling of space than many catamarans of this size. Equally, the starboard forward guest cabin has a queen size bed, while there’s a smaller double to be found aft. Unusually, the galley is down in the starboard hull, leaving space for a full-width saloon with navstation.

A pair of big opening hatches in the front of the coachroof are supported on gas struts, while a tri-fold door that swings upwards to sit against the underside of the hard top creates a wide opening between cockpit and saloon.

Stowage on deck includes three large lockers at the front of the bridgedeck, plus further space under the seating in the aft cockpit.

Tankage is also generous at around 500lt for both fuel and water.

The first two prototype 1170s are already afloat, with one of them having been tested in 30-35 knots of head winds and waves of up to 4-5m waves. “Even though we were pushing it hard to test its limits,” designer and Seawind founder Richard Ward reported afterwards, “it felt strong and safe and very dry, even as we crashed off the back of the short, sharp waves.”

Production boats will be built at Seawind’s new factory in Izmir, Turkey, with the first expected to be afloat in mid 2024. This location, a modern city of five million people on the eastern shores of the Aegean, reflects the yard’s desire to capture more of the European market.

Seawind 1600 Boat Review

  • By Mark Pillsbury
  • Updated: July 20, 2020

One of the things I like best about baseball is watching a batter swing for the fences, and at the crack of the bat, he knows that he can afford to take a leisurely jog around the bases because he just hit the sweet spot.

I had that same kind of feeling one day this past February when I stepped from the dinghy onto the transom steps of the new Seawind 1600 catamaran . Right away, I knew I was about to go for one fine sail—and on a near-perfect day to boot. Blue sky. Thirteen knots of breeze. Could it get better? Not until the sails were up.

Built in Vietnam, at 52 feet LOA the 1600 is Seawind’s largest catamaran. It was designed by Reichel Pugh as a luxury catamaran with equal measures of cruising comfort and sailing performance. Let’s talk about the sailing first.

The 1600 sports a square-top full-batten main and solent rig with a screecher for light-air reaching and a self-tacking jib for heavier breezes or sailing upwind. There’s an option for an inner forestay and furling storm jib, and also a sprit for flying a spinnaker, which we did on our test sail (more on that in a moment).

Headsail sheets are led to winches adjacent to each helm station. There is no traveler. Instead there are two mainsheets that run through blocks on either side of the stern and then to a central winch on the transom, where reefing lines are also led. This mainsheet arrangement provides lots of control over a big and powerful sail.

On a beam reach with the screecher set, our GPS speed hovered in the high 7-knot range, and when the chute went up, so did our speed, to 8.5 knots and a little higher in any puff we caught. The 1600 uses Lewmar Mamba steering, and the helms felt as smooth as could be. Headed upwind and home, we rolled out the self-tacking jib and still made a respectable 6.6 knots, and thanks to retractable daggerboards, were able to point quite well.

So now, on to the comforts.

The Seawind comes in either a three- or four-cabin layout. On this boat, the owner’s hull was to starboard and included a queen bunk aft, lots of storage, and a spacious head and shower up at the pointy end. The opposite hull had two cabins. The forward one felt a bit narrow because of the fine entry of the bows, but still, it had a double berth and adequate storage space. The aft cabin had two single berths and a filler that turned them into a double. A shared head was amidships.

With windows all around, the saloon was a bright and sunny place to be. Opening ports forward allow a breeze to blow through, and large sliding windows at the aft-facing galley permit the cook to join any party taking place at the large dining table located to starboard out in the cockpit. There’s an indoor table with U-shaped seating as well to port of a forward-facing nav station.

The cockpit is covered by a Bimini that is supported by stainless posts aft and short carbon-fiber risers forward. It provides lots of shade, and the breeze blows through the space between the hard awning and cabin top. This space can be closed off, as can the cockpit sides and back with clear panels. Eight solar panels sit atop the Bimini and keep the battery bank fed (though AGM batteries are standard, the boat we sailed had an optional lithium-ion system).

Furniture throughout the boat is built using a honeycomb foam core and veneers to save weight and for strength. Hulls, deck and Bimini are all cored and infused using vinyl ester resin. An outside layer of Kevlar is added to the hulls for protection and to strengthen the areas around the daggerboards; carbon fiber reinforces the chainplates, bulkheads and stiffeners.

For power, the 1600 comes standard with 57 hp Yanmar diesels; the boat in Miami had a pair of optional 80 hp Yanmars that pushed us along at just over 8 knots at cruising speed and better than 9 in get-home-fast mode. With the larger engines and lots of other options, the 1600 carries a price tag of right around $1.2 million, delivered to the US East Coast. For that, you can enjoy your own sweet spot.

Seawind 1160 Catamaran Review

catamaran the seawind

First launched in 2004, the 38’ Seawind 1160 has been a popular, award-winning vessel for cruisers and charterers alike. Whether due to good design or simply good marketing, the Seawind 1160 seems to have a bit of a cult following, bringing the vessel into high demand. We sort out the reality from the hype to help you make the most informed decision you can before purchase.

Seawind was founded by Richard Ward in the early 1980’s. Over the course of a decade, his Seawind designs matured to include the Seawind 850, launched in 1991, the 33-foot Seawind 1000, launched in 1994, and the Seawind 1200 in launched in 1998 for the Australian charter company Whitsunday Escape.

In 2000, Ward purchased Venturer, a luxury power catamaran builder. In 2004, the Seawind 1160 emerged, a culmination of the best elements of its predecessors. The 1160 series includes the standard 1160, the 1160 Light (a lighter build with two outboards instead of diesels), the 1160 Deluxe, and the 1160 Resort, made specifically for day charters.

Partnerships with Corsair and High Modulus have helped solidify the Seawind as a top competitor in the mid-range catamaran market, where they have earned high awards including, Australian Sailboat of the Year, Cruising World Magazine’s Best Multihull Cruiser and Most Innovative Sailboat of the USA, Best Sailboat of the Newport Boat Show, Australian Consumer Product of the Year (Endeavour Manufacturing Awards 2007) and Nominated as a Top Ten Boat by SAIL Magazine. With over 200 Seawind 1160s produced, the model, currently produced in Vietnam, is still in high-demand.

Compared to its competitors, Seawind offers some unique features that have made the model one of the most in-demand mid-sized catamarans on the market.

  • Tri-Fold Door – opens up ample space between the salon and cockpit for yoga or entertaining.
  • Low Freeboard – with less than half the freeboard of the Leopard 38, the 1160 reduces wind drift and wave impact, as well as providing easier boarding and disembarking.
  • Self-Tacking Jib – combined with cockpit-led lines makes single-handing simple.
  • Ample Solar Capacity – cruisers can find greater self-sufficiency on long passages and remote anchorages.5.
  • Monocoque Structure – following a partnership with High Modulus, the 1160 updated its production to include a five-mold system that produces an extremely stiff and strong monocoque structure.
  • Stanchion Fuel Overflow – a thoughtful feature designed to reduce diesel overflow into the sea.

Notes From the Sea

There’s no better way to determine a vessel’s seaworthiness than to sail her across an ocean. Despite assertions that ocean-going cats must be over 40-feet, the 1160 has shown these assertions to be unfounded. We met up with the owners of JollyDogs, a 2008 Seawind 1160 that made the Pacific Crossing in 2019 to find out the good, the bad, and the “why can’t you be more like your sister?”

Those who have sailed an 1160 say that they’re “safe and fun to sail.” The vessel sails well in light airs, though it doesn’t point as high as a vessel equipped with dagger boards. But then again, you don’t have the hassle and storage space reduction that comes with dagger boards. Instead, the 1160 has mini-keels, which protect the rudders and sail drives from damage.

Cruisers find that the 1160’s are built extremely strong “head and shoulders above Fontaine Pajots, Lagoons, and Leopards.” Earlier Seawind 1160s used a conventional hand-lay-up process. Newer models benefit from a high-tech resin infusion process that involves closed molds, environment-controlled curing, and vacuum pressure. This process helps make this model lighter and stronger than the competition.

With a small-to-moderate bridge deck clearance (<24”), you can expect some slamming when sailing upwind in choppy seas, but that is to be expected of most catamarans. With the Seawind’s strong hull, there should be no structural issues that result.

When it comes to just living on the 1160, everyone brings up two features unique to the Seawind 1160 and its progeny: the trifold door and the integrated barby. While some may lament the lack of seating in the cockpit for entertaining, others love the spaciousness that trifold door brings.

Indoors, the dropdown salon table makes for a comfortable lounge area or an extra bunk. The galley down provides decent counter-space and storage, and the large freezers provide ample space for the extra mahi you just reeled in. With over 6’ of headroom throughout the boat, everyone can stand tall inside and out.

Other features the builders got right include the walk-around side-sleeping bed in the master cabin (no more crawling over your mate in the middle of the night), the bright and well-ventilated interior, and the roomy stand-alone shower with a bench seat.

The Cruel Realities

On any 38-foot catamaran, you always run the danger of overloading. One common complaint we’ve heard is their lack of storage capacity. Most 1160 cruisers, unless they are extreme minimalists, end up with a bunk dedicated to “stuff.”

This may be slightly intentional, as the 1160 has a reputation for better performance than her typical cruising counterparts. Due to her size, a full cruising payload may significantly reduce performance. As in all things, it’s a trade-off.

According to Mark, on JollyDogs, “Once loaded for long distance, remote area cruising she feels a bit heavy and less responsive, but she still sails well in light and heavy conditions and is still fun to sail.” Part of what makes the Seawind 1160 so light is the use of lower-weight, sometimes lower-quality materials. Unless meticulously maintained, light fixtures, faucets and laminate surfaces can begin to show their age far sooner than a Leopard of similar vintage.

The Wish List

One of the unique aspects of the Seawind company is its habit of listening to its family of owners and implementing design improvements where they can. With that in mind, here are some wish list items from owners we spoke with.

  • Integrated Rain Catchment System in Targa – with limited water storage, it’s a shame not to take advantage of the ubiquitous squalls.
  • Better Engine Access (particularly on the 3-cabin model) – unless you’re slight of build, trying to cram yourself into a 2’ x 3’ opening in the shower to access the back of the engine is near-impossible.
  • Electric Windows – the 1260 has electric windows, while the 1160 has removable windows between the helm and salon. Newer models integrated storage for the windows, but older models must retrofit or find somewhere to store them when off.
  • Better Ventilation Solutions in the Rain – In a warm climate when it’s blowing rain hard, ventilation can be a problem as with most cats. Electric windows that can be open only part way may be an improvement, as would the addition of door caps to forward hatches and interior hatches (as seen on certain Catana models).
  • Bring Nav Station Up – while the 1260 has resolved this issue, the 1160 has the chart table and navigation station in the port hull where you can’t see anything around you.
  • Ceramic Coating on the Lip Seal Bearing – the Yanmar 3YM30’s with SD20 sail drives and Gori 3-blade props are extremely efficient, and the dog clutch design in the SD20 is great. However, the prop shaft wear from the lip seals is really annoying. Mark from JollyDogs suggests a ceramic coating on the bearing.
  • Deeper Settee with Lumbar Support – some owners complain of backaches during foul weather passages spent inside the salon. There is nowhere to sit in the cockpit during foul weather because the top design that doesn’t provide good attachment opportunities for an effective rain enclosure tent.

To Buy? Or Not to Buy?

Overall, the Seawind 1160 is a solid compromise between comfort and performance. However, it comes with a heftier price tag than similar-sized Leopards, Lagoons, and Fontaine Pajots. Expect to pay 25% to 50% more for a Seawind. The best thing you can do is sail as many as you can, determine what is most important to you, and decide what you’re willing to trade off.

Seawind 1600 catamaran.

The Seawind 1600 is a blue water cruiser designed to have a balance of sailing performance and cruising comfort. It is built with the latest techniques using a composite construction, and a great effort is made to save weight, making this catamaran fast and practical.

Table of Contents

DESIGN – INTERIOR & EXTERIOR

The Seawind 1600 was designed by renowned naval architects Reichel Pugh and built by Seawind , an Australian based company that recently moved its production facilities to Vietnam. Designed with performance and weight saving in mind, it’s hulls are narrow and reinforced with Kevlar and carbon. The interior has a minimalist design and is offered in two finishes, “European” and “Traditional.”

The retractable rudders and daggerboards give a maximum draft of 8’6″ / 2.6 m down to 2’1″ / 0.54 m, which is ideal for accessing shallower areas typically reserved for smaller boats and allow beaching on the sand if needed. The engines are easily accessed, and the excellent space in the engine room makes performing maintenance very comfortable. Locker lids on the deck are solidly constructed, as is the walkway between the trampolines and should last the owner many years. Solar panels on the roof are recessed and designed with a guttering system to collect fresh rainwater, adding to the practicality of this boat as a blue water cruiser.

Visibility from the twin helms is exceptional, though taller sailors may find the hardtop a little low when standing. Being located outboard with such excellent visibility also means the helms are slightly exposed to the elements and can make the captain’s life uncomfortable when on watch in wet weather. Having engine controls in this position at each helm makes docking and maneuvering safe and easy.

The large opening lockers on the floor and under seating provide adequate storage space. The cockpit coffee table folds out into a dining table with the wrap-around L shaped lounge providing accommodation for eight people. A huge triple sliding window allows access from the galley to the cockpit lounge, making communication and delivery of food and drinks a breeze. Features such as bracing points, handholds, and attachment points are in good supply in the cockpit for added safety and security.

The Seawind 1600 is a performance catamaran with daggerboards, but conveniently don’t protrude through to the deck. This makes moving about on top much easier and safer, especially when offshore. The mechanism for operating these is in the cockpit for ease of use and safety. All lockers and hatches are well designed and finished flush to the deck. The main sheet is controlled by winches on either side of the rear seat in the cockpit. Also, for safety and practicality, most other lines are controlled by a power winch in the center of the cockpit, with the lines tailing into bins, keeping the area neat and uncluttered.

Moving from the cockpit to the saloon is unobstructed, through a good-sized sliding door and down two steps. The interior is bright and minimalist in design. Four forward-facing opening hatches provide good ventilation, and combined with wrap-around windows, the sailor has exceptional visibility. The navigation station is located up and forward on the starboard side. From this position, you have excellent 360-degree visibility all around and are also able to see the sails. The outstanding visibility makes the saloon suitable and safe for being on watch during poor weather.

A large U shaped lounge offers plenty of comfortable seating for up to eight, with a coffee table that folds out, converting into a dining table. The large flat-screen TV makes this space great for movie night. Communication with those outside is easy through the extra-large window adjacent to the galley. While the cabinetry could have slightly larger rounded corners for safety, they’re all solidly constructed with quality materials.

The galley is mounted up in the saloon on the starboard side in an enclosed U shaped configuration, suggesting it would be a safe, secure space during rough weather. With a large amount of bench space, deep double stainless sink, three burner stovetop, 130L front-loading fridge, and 90L top-loading freezer, this is a practical cruising galley.

ACCOMMODATIONS

Two accommodation configurations are available in the Seawind 1600. Four cabins with two in each hull, or three cabins with the entire starboard side allocated to the owner’s berth. The forward guest cabin is quite small and is a single berth, which is a compromise given the narrow hulls of this performance catamaran. Although the master cabin is quite comfortable with four opening hatches for natural sunlight and ventilation. The master has a vanity with a chair that can be used as a desk and a good number of drawers and storage space.

All cabins have recessed fans, which are a practical solution to ensure good ventilation. The separate showers have 2 meters, standing headroom, and the thoughtful opaque windows in the ceiling illuminate the area well but, most importantly, provide privacy from those on deck. The lighting is aesthetically pleasing and useful throughout, with recessed LED lighting utilized in many places. Although this catamaran doesn’t have the luxury of production cruising catamarans, the accommodation is functional and practical.

PRICE RANGE

The Seawind 1600 starts at $889,000. Although after adding some of the optional extras, the price rises up to $990,000, which is comparable to other catamarans of similar size and type.

With a thoughtful design such as a recessed daggerboard that doesn’t impede in the interior or deck and a minimalist interior, this catamaran suits the sailor who wants to be able to make fast passages while in comfort. This is a fast, performance cruiser, and some volume for storage and living space is compromised with the narrow hull widths to achieve the increase in sailing performance.

With a large cockpit and saloon that has many opening windows provide superb visibility from the helm and saloon for convenience and ease of communication. The forward-facing navigation station is a safe location when on watch, with the amazing visibility to see both the headsail and mainsail. Overall, the Seawind 1600 would suit those who want to travel fast and are happy to compromise space for performance and sailing ability.

“The concept and design of this Lagoon Seventy 7 yacht has been praised by everyone in the industry, won over by the spacious interior and exterior areas,” Guillaume Le Brec, the experienced skipper in charge of this project at Ponant, said in a statement. “Guests will really appreciate the high-end finishings as much as her exceptional sailing qualities.”

Furthermore, the itineraries are completely customizable, too. The inaugural seven-night roundtrip voyages from Bonifacio can be tweaked to the traveler’s interests, with the captain offering recommendations. After a stint in Corsica, Spirit of Ponant will cruise around Mahé, a.k.a. the largest island in the Seychelles archipelago, for the winter season.
