Whether aboard a large luxury yacht charter with crew looking after your every need, or a bareboat charter sailing yacht, a catamaran charter Italy will allow you to enjoy the best of Italy's beautiful coastline and culture.

Though the east Italian coast has much to offer, most of the yacht charter Italy locations are on the west coast, stretching from the Italian Riviera in the north to Sicily to the south. Along this strech of coastline and islands, there is much to explore on your Italy yacht charter by catamaran - arguably among the best catamaran yacht charter destination on the West Mediterranean.

Towns, Cities and Islands to Visit in Italy

There are four broad areas to enjoy your yacht charter Italy - the Italian Riviera, Sardinia's Costa Smeralda (emerald coast), Tuscany, Amalfi Coast and Sicily.

The Italian Riviera is centred on the ancient empire seat of Genoa that ruled over Corsica, Sardinia and much of the mainland to the south. Today you can cruise the epic coastline between the five villages of Cinque Terre or head over to Porto Cervo on your sailing charter. Cinque Terre's villages of Porto Venere, Tellaro, Monte Marcello, Framura and Sestri Levante have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997 and are so incredibly popular among tourists it's probably best to enjoy it all from your charter catamaran!

To the south, and on the west coast is the region of Tuscany beloved among British expatriots. The wine, relaxed atmosphere and gentle climate are major draws. On your Italy yacht charter you may wish to take your luxury yacht out to the Tuscan Archipelago just offshore. The seven islands of the Tuscan Archipelago are by repute the 'gems in Venus' necklace that fell in the Tyrrhenian Sea. When you visit these beautiful islands you'll appreciate how the ancient storytellers came to such a conclusion!

South again, and southwest of Rome are the Pontine Island group, off the coast of Napoli and overlooked by Mount Vesuvius and her impressive volcano. Inhabited for many thousands of years these islands have been used as places of exile by the Romans and then Fascists much more recently. Now they are a jewel in the sea between the mainland and Corsica, and well worth a visit - perhaps on an Amalfi Coast yacht charter.

The Amalfi Coast on the Sorrentine Peninsula is like Cinque Terre best visited by boat if you don't appreciate climbing steps all the time! That said, the villages and coastline are a utterly beautiful. You may wish to sail to Capri, Sorrento, Napoli or Ischia on your Amalfi Coast yacht charter, though Sicily's Aeolian Islands are within reach too.

South again and just off the 'toe' of southern Italy is Sicily . Dominated by Mt Etna and swathed in modern myth about the families who 'really' control the island, Sicily is nonetheless a beautiful place for a sailing vacation. The north coast stretching from Messina to Trapani is most popular - do pop off the coast to the volcanic Aeolian Island group, with Stromboli the most famous of all. The Egadi Islands and Marsala are well worth a visit too.

A crewed yacht charter is one of the best ways to enjoy an Italy yacht charter holiday. With an often large vessel just for you and your fellow charter guests' use, on a crewed yacht charter the skipper and crew will look after your every need afloat. They will look after the tender as you venture ashore in at Cinque Terre or Capri, and perhaps make suggestions as to the best spots to enjoy a first class meal or water sport activity of your choice.

On a bareboat catamaran charter you will have the space and added privacy to get the luxury yacht from A-B at your own pace.

Italy Catamaran Charter Types

Though you will often have to have a sailing license for a larger vessel, a bareboat charter will give you complete freedom and privacy to do what you want. Unlike a monohull sailing yachts, a catamaran charter yacht will often come with en suite heads in all the cabins, an AC generator and all the comforts of home as you captain your own ship.

A skippered catamaran charter can range from a 46ft+ catamaran. The skipper aboard will look after the sailing and make suggestions as to your next destinations, with you playing as much or as little a role in getting from A-B as you want - you don't need to be an experienced sailor. It is customary to pay a tip at the end of the sailing trip, on top of the €100-€150 a day fee for the skipper you pay as well as the basic charter fee.

A crewed catamaran charter could mean a 60ft yacht with skipper and crew, but could also mean a luxury yacht or crewed yacht charter with a team of people looking after your every need. As well as sailing the vessel, they will cook, look after the housekeeping and water toys, and provide you with the service you expect at the top end of yacht charter holiday experiences.

Catamaran Types in Italy

Sailing catamaran.

Ranging from a 40ft yacht to much, much larger, this will be enjoyable to sail (particularly with the wind aft of the beam) and unlike a monohull sailing yacht will often have en suite heads in all the staterooms. You will have plenty of entertainment space aboard and even the smaller vessels will have room for water toys such as paddleboards and kite surfing gear or even diving gear and jet skis. If the windage of the catamaran sailing boat gets too much, powerful twin engines will be able to get you upwind to your next destination too!

Motor Catamaran

Ranging from 46ft to over 100ft LOA, you can charter a luxury motor yacht catamaran with crew or bareboat. Thanks to the wider beam, catamaran motor boats are more stable than a monohull motor yacht (no one going green at sea unless too much drink was involved!) and much faster. This could allow for longer legs, between the Amalfi Coast and Aeolian Islands for example.

What can you do on a Catamaran charter in Italy?

There are three broad types of sailing holiday to be had in Italy - family, outdoor or party.

Partying can mean stays in fun spots like Capri or Naples.

Family holidays are the bread and butter of the Italy catamaran yacht charter economy. You can relax in great places like the Pontine Islands and Tuscan Archipelago

Active holidays Snorkelling off the Egadi Islands or climbing Elba island.

What does an average day on an Italy Yacht charter look like?

A catamaran charter boat charter in Italy can mean a variety of things to different people. The sailing is reliably excellent so a blast at sea every day will be a core part of the fun.

For the family or older ones, you can sail between hidden coves and quiet sandy beaches, while visiting fishing villages and quieter resorts.

You will want to sail for several hours a day - with the near perfect sailing conditions this is unmissable. Watching the marine life and tropical fish from the windward rail on a beam reach as the catamaran bounds across the sea will be an unforgettable experience.

As such your typical day could be a mix of things, from an early start to blast off to the next island to waking up at lunchtime feeling a little green around the gills and thanking your crew for getting you back aboard. The choice is down to you.

Why Italy is superb for a Catamaran Charter

The West Mediterranean would be a poorer place without the brash style of Italy! From its fashionable resorts to luxury hotels and restaurants as well as its fascinating and deep culture, Italy is an ideal location for a sailing vacation.

Do You Need A Licence To Charter A Catamaran In Italy?

If you are on a skippered or crewed catamaran charter you do not need a license to sail on the Mediterranean Sea - you can just turn up at the marina and go.

You do need a license if you are on a bareboat catamaran charter and in some countries a Day Skipper or ICC may not be enough for boats over 45 feet in length, you will need to check with the charter agent but here are some examples of typical sailing qualifications that will allow you to charter in most countries:

International Certificate of Competence : This is issued on request by your European sailing authority and you should automatically qualify with certain national sailing qualifications.

RYA Qualifications : If you have the following qualifications you will typically be able to take a bareboat charter out of Rhodes (but it is worth checking as per above), these include Day Skipper (sail or motor endorsement), Coastal Skipper or Yachtmaster.

American Sailing Association (ASA): The ASA 104 Bareboat certificate is commonly accepted but also check as per above

US Sailing : The International Proficiency Certificate is widely accepted and The Bareboat Cruising Certificate is also accepted in many cases.

Best Time to Book Your Italy Catamaran Yacht Charter

The sailing season in Italy is from May to October. Outside of the high season in July/August you will find many marinas have enough room to meet demand and will often be cheaper than Greece or Croatia.

In some parts of France's and Italy's sailing meccas the prices rocket in July/August and you may end up paying hundreds of Euros for the last available berth if you're lucky enough to get one!

As such the best times to sail in Italy are during school term in June or September when the sea is still warm but the marinas and towns relaxed and quiet. If you want Italy at full throttle in the maximum heat of summer the high season may well be for you!

The Climate

Italy is known for its excellent sailing conditions, making many locations meccas for all sorts of wind sports.

During much of the sailing season in this part of the west Mediterranean Sea you will find sea breezes that build during the day and ease off at night, making for a perfect sailing holiday.

The NE Maestrale is an important wind here. Generally blowing from October to April, and originating from the Rhone Valley, it can pipe up for a week at a time and blow at gale force for days on end even in summer.

The hot, humid southerly Scirocco can make things extremely uncomfortable at night toward the southern half of Sardinia from time to time. Expect temperatures to hardly dip at night from the high 30s in the day. Orange hued fog (coloured by Sahara Desert sand) is another issue, adding to the discomfort!

Frequently asked questions

The main points to consider are what is your budget, have you got the necessary sailing experience and qualifications to manage the boat if it's not going to have a skipper, whom you are taking sailing, where exactly you wish to go and what will the weather be like on the proposed dates of your trip.

You will typically pay 50% up front on booking the catamaran hire and the balance on arrival. You will either pay a security deposit with your credit card on departure or can get insurance covering damage in advance. In some cases (such as the recent Covid situation) charter companies may be more flexible but this depends on the individual charter companies themselves.

If you are at sea and in danger, call MAYDAY on VHF Ch16 or ring the coast guard on your phone if you have reception. If you have a mechanical fault and can make it to or are on a mooring you will be able to phone a help line number given by the boat charter company and they can typically send someone from the charter base

You should consider do you have the experience to handle the catamaran before you book and where do you want to go along with what the weather will be like. Bring warm weather and cool weather clothing if it looks like the weather can be cool as well as warm and remember at sea it can be cool in the evenings.

If you want to sail without a skipper then you will need relevant qualifications like RYA Day Skipper/International Certificate of Competence (ICC)/ASA 104 Bareboat certificate or the US Sailing Certificate. If you choose to have a skipper on board your catamaran you won't require licences.

Charter a catamaran in italy with scansail.

Rich cultural attractions, breathtaking nature, and delicious gastronomy. These are just a few of the many things that await you on your catamaran rental in Italy. Whether you are looking for a tranquil family holiday in Tuscany or a sporty trip across the wild and energetic Sicilian waters, there is something for everyone. The 7,600-kilometre-long coastline is a true sailor’s paradise. You can discover the compelling history of the Mediterranean country in a new medium as you navigate along the sparkling waters of the open sea.

How much does it cost to rent a catamaran in Italy?

Many factors contribute to the overall cost of a catamaran charter in Italy, such as the size of the vessel, the seasonality and the duration of your rental. Therefore, it is best to use the filters on Scansail to help narrow down your search and find what you need. In general, you can expect a catamaran rental in Italy for 10 people to be around €7,740 per week during the low season and €16,320 a week during the high season.

What is the best time to visit Italy?

Italy is a large country with diverse ranges in climatic conditions. For instance, the north of the country has harsh winters with snow and freezing temperatures and mild summers. However, southern Italy such as Sicily or Sardinia has mild winters and very long, hot summers. Therefore, there is no specific time of year that is always good for a catamaran rental. This being said, if you prefer temperatures of around 25 to 30 degrees Celsius, we recommend chartering your catamaran from June to September.

Should I rent a catamaran with or without a skipper?

As you search through the catamarans in Italy, you will find that many of them come with the option of including a skipper. Although it is possible to charter a catamaran without a skipper, they can bring many benefits to your overall sailing experience. For instance, a professional skipper can take care of all the sailing, docking, and anchoring of the catamaran, leaving you with more time to focus on relaxing and enjoying the views. Moreover, a skipper will be familiar with the region, so they can adjust the sailing route to your liking, showing you all Italy has to offer.

What to do in Italy?

There are so many places to discover in Italy, so we have compiled a few recommendations for your perfect catamaran charter around the beautiful Mediterranean country.

The Amalfi Coast

Start your catamaran journey on the Amalfi Coast and be inspired by the Italian atmosphere around the Campania Islands. This area is considered one of Italy's most beautiful coastal regions and an attractive area for sailors. The picturesque fishing villages and green cliffs provide a dreamy backdrop as you glide through the water. Ashore, you must explore the bustling city of Naples, the active volcano Vesuvius and the historic archaeological site of Pompeii.

One of the most popular sailing destinations in Italy is the Tuscan Archipelago, consisting of the islands of Elba, Capraia, Montecristo, Giglio, Gorgona, Giannutri and Pianosa. The various islands form the National Park of the Tuscan Islands, the largest marine park in Europe. In particular, the island of Elba is a must-see destination in Tuscany. Despite its popularity, here you will usually be able to find an idyllic mooring or a secluded bay. The region around Elba is also a good starting point for hiring a catamaran for beginners, thanks to its moderate winds and easy sailing.

Sicily, the largest island in the Mediterranean Sea, offers a spectacular experience in contact with nature thanks to its impressive cliffs, beautiful sandy beaches and views of Mount Etna. This is an ideal place to charter a catamaran in Italy with its good sailing winds, hidden bays and numerous islets. While the northern coast consists mainly of rocks, the south boasts sandy beaches and to the east the active volcano Etna, some 3,300 metres high. When you want to disembark from your catamaran, you can visit many Greek and Roman ruins on the island and immerse yourself in the life of exciting cities such as Palermo, Messina, Catania or Taormina.

Nearby Sicily is the slightly smaller island of Sardinia. With its various sailing areas, this island is suitable for beginners and experienced sailors alike. Sardinia, which is surrounded by the Tyrrhenian Sea and the Sardinian Sea, is famous for its Costa Smeralda: an extraordinarily beautiful stretch of coastline with crystal-clear waters that change colour from emerald green to deep blue. This stretch of coastline is very popular and well-developed for nautical tourism. The most popular destinations are the Maddalena archipelago and Porto Cervo, a meeting place for the international jet set in Sardinia.

Cinque Terre's villages of Porto Venere, Tellaro, Monte Marcello, Framura and Sestri Levante have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997 and are so incredibly popular among tourists it's probably best to enjoy it all from your charter catamaran!

To the south, and on the west coast is the region of **Tuscany** beloved among British expatriots.

The **Amalfi Coast** on the Sorrentine Peninsula is like Cinque Terre best visited by boat if you don't appreciate climbing steps all the time! That said, the villages and coastline are a utterly beautiful. You may wish to sail to Capri, Sorrento, Napoli or Ischia on your Amalfi Coast yacht charter, though Sicily's Aeolian Islands are within reach too.

South again and just off the 'toe' of southern Italy is **Sicily**.

**Partying** can mean stays in fun spots like Capri or Naples.

**Family holidays** are the bread and butter of the Italy catamaran yacht charter economy. You can relax in great places like the Pontine Islands and Tuscan Archipelago

**Active holidays** Snorkelling off the Egadi Islands or climbing Elba island.

Why Use Borrow A Boat For an Italy Catamaran Charter:

Borrow A Boat is the leading boat rental and yacht charter marketplace worldwide with over 35,000 boat listings across 65 + countries worldwide. Launched in 2017 by yachting and boating enthusiasts with decades of yachting experience, Borrow a Boat acts as a broker for the world's most impressive superyachts and motor boat charters. We cover North America, the Mediterranean, Caribbean, South Pacific and Rest Of World. Wherever in the world you want to sail, we have a luxury yacht and superyacht to take you there via our trusted network of industry contacts.

We are an independent company, so can offer you the biggest choice of vessel at the most competitive prices, to help you find your perfect yacht. Alongside our passion for yachting, our commitment to service and decades of luxury yacht experience ensures your luxury yacht charter will be an unforgettable experience. Most importantly, all our luxury yachts and superyacht charters meet stringent and current safety and insurance requirements in their respective locations.

Our captains and crew have personal experience of the world's best and safest anchorages and marinas, alongside in-depth local knowledge of cultural attractions, shore dining and entertainment opportunities.

The main points to consider are what is your budget, have you got the necessary sailing experience and qualifications to manage the boat if it's not going to have a skipper, whom you are taking sailing, where exactly you wish to go and what will the weather be like on the proposed dates of your trip.

You will typically pay 50% up front on reserving the catamaran hire and the balance on arrival.

We are confident that our prices are the most competitive and transparent in the market.

We won't charge any booking fees when you make a booking with us.

We have the highest number of verified and vetted boats available on the market.

Below we explore the right time to charter and some of the key places to visit. You can also browse the yachts available in Italy this year. An Italy yacht charter vacation brings this central Mediterranean country’s beautiful culture and scenery to life. You can experience many different aspects of Italy, including the restaurants, art, history and colour in the comfort of your favourite luxury charter yacht on the Mediterranean and Adriatic coastlines. The famous Italian places you can explore include Naples , Capri , Amalfi , Portofino , Sardinia , Rome ,  Sicily and Venice , to name a few.

Cost To Charter a Yacht In Italy:

The cost to charter a crewed yacht in Italy begins at a price of around 5,000 Euros per week plus advanced provisioning allowance (APA) expenses, typically around 30%. The most expensive luxury Italy superyacht charter holiday costs over 1 million Euros per week plus APA.

The Italy Charter Season:

Like most of the Mediterranean, the Italy season generally runs from April to the end of October. The summer season for Italy is in July and August. This is also the high season as far as yacht charter goes. Other good times to rent your yacht are generally on either of the shoulder seasons (April-May and September-October), each side of the main summer season, as the temperatures are still comfortable, and the onshore tourists have yet to arrive in their largest numbers. The types of yachts available in Italy include motor yacht, sailing yacht charter, skippered, crewed yachts, catamarans, power boats, sailboat, luxury yachts and the ever increasing mega and superyacht charter.

Expert Charter Broker Quote:

“I think Italy is so special because it truly has something to offer everyone. Whether you are seeking a romantic honeymoon, a family vacation, or a holiday with a few of your closest friends, Italy can provide exactly what you’re looking for.” – Trina Howes Luxury Yacht Charter Broker in her article titled ‘ Italy – Why is this Charter Location so Special? ’

Superyacht moored inThe Italian Riviera - Rapallo and Cinque-terra

Many Italy and Amalfi private charters begin in Naples. Naples is a city with a distinct energy - chaotic yet charming, cluttered yet beautiful. Rather daunting to the virgin eye,

Naples has a way of shedding your inhibitions, to present a proud and colorful culture, with an alluring hospitality. Naples is the yacht charter hub of southern Italy and the gateway to Capri and the Amalfi Coast. The Isle of Capri and Amalfi present some of the most spectacular coastlines of the whole Mediterranean.

AMALFI COAST - COSTIERA AMALFITANA

A yacht holiday in Italy must incorporate the stunning Amalfi Coast. The Amalfi coast is around a day sail south of Naples. Amalfi and Positano , like Capri, attract visitors and charter yachts of the highest prestige. The 50 km of the Amalfi coastline stretches mainly from Sorrento to Salerno . It remains a place of rare and incredible beauty. The hillside towns are a truly magnificent display of Italian engineering and architecture. Terrace houses and buildings cling to steep cliffs, rising from the coastline.

Portofino is another must see. It is a tiny town of cobble-stone streets, framed by hills of silvery, ancient olive groves. From the top of the hill, the views of the harbor and coastline are breathtaking. Cafes, boutique shops and gelataria’s spill out into the harbor piazza. The portside cafes are a great place to sit and watch the glamorous yachting world go by. Further down the Italian coast, you'll sail upon 'Cinque Terre' - A succession of five coastal villages, all with the same spectacular views of the seas. These villages are less expensive and sophisticated, than their more popular sister, Portofino. There is a stunning and famous walk along this coastal route, linking the five towns romantically called 'Via Dell 'Amore' ( The Way of Love ).

A charter in Sardinia, Italy is also quite an experience. Sardinia is a universe unto itself. It's an island of Italy, where the local language is incomprehensible to all other Italians.

An island with one of Europe's most stunning coastlines; it's waters teem with fish; it's golden sands disappear into oceans of blue; it's rugged mountains are covered with flocks of sheep producing cheese so pungent, your palate will never forget.

Beneteau Italy, Mediterranean

Venice is a city that’s surrounded by so much water, so being afloat on a yacht vacation is a fantastic way to experience this classic Mediterranean city. Venice is one of the most romantic cities in the world , with its intricate web of canals, charming gondoliers, glorious renaissance architecture and narrow cobbled streets. Venice is an essential stop on any Adriatic yacht charter holiday. On your charter boat, take a cruise down the Grand Canal. From the deck of your charter boat, you’ll be able to pass by sights such as the Ca'Foscari, Palazzo Grassi, Guggenheim Museum and the Accademia Bridge.

Why CharterWorld? CharterWorld is a specialist charter company with all the crewed yachts in Italy and the Mediterranean at the best price. Italy Yacht and Catamaran Charter

We have incredible yachts and catamarans ready to sail from 4 bases across Italy!

We specialise in Yacht and Catamaran Charters in Italy

Sailing around Italy

Sailing in Italy is an idyllic way to spend the summer - there's splendid views, glorious sunshine, reliable winds, and plenty to explore - including volcanoes, beaches and ancient harbours. Of course, there's also outstanding food and wine when you're on land, which makes any holiday doubly spell-binding.

Italy is the third most popular cruising ground in Europe for charter boats, with multiple clusters of islands to hop around and a coastline of such immense beauty that over there are over 10 million visitors to places like the Amalfi coast, Cinque Terre or Portofino - and that's not even including the fine beaches - and the coastline is even more special and incredible when viewed from your own yacht or catamaran!

Don't just dream of sailing along the Amalfi coast to throw down the anchor in glamorous Capri, or visiting the pristine Maddalena islands (where Nelson once stationed his naval ships to battle Napoleon) and the exclusive Costa Smeralda, or sampling fresh pasta, the best pizza in the world, or Limoncello made from the local trees in Sicily - get out there and do it! We can help you find and book your ideal yacht or catamaran!

Our Yacht Charter base in Italy - Tuscany, Salerno, Portorosa, Marsala, Sardinia

SAILING RATING:  Intermediate - Italy offers more exciting sailing conditions than Greece and Croatia, particularly a couple of miles away from the coast. There are outstanding marina facilities covering much of the coast, but there are some places where it's useful (and a lot cheaper) to be use the anchor. Navigation is simple and by line-of-sight, and many marinas have ormeggiatori who will board and park your boat for you, to take the stress out of mooring up.

WHEN TO GO:  The sailing season officially begins in late March , and runs through to the end of October . In recent years, the weather has been unusually warm in October. August is when you'll find the hottest temperatures and the highest prices, as all of the Italians go on holiday. It's also when marinas become so jam-packed that it is well worth booking a space in a marina in advance.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  You'll need an ICC (which you can convert from an RYA DaySkipper or equivalent ) or above to charter a boat in Italy. If you're not qualified, we can find you a professional skipper .

VISA REQUIREMENTS:  Italy is part of the EU, which means UK and EU passport holders can travel there at will. US and Australian passport holders do not need a visa unless planning to stay in Europe for longer than 90 days.

GETTING THERE:  There are multiple airports across Italy - it's a very popular tourist destination and many regional airports have excellent connection s to the rest of Europe. Public transport around the country is fast, efficient and cost-effective, though we can also arrange transfers which are typically faster and easier (though admittedly more expensive).

Our base in Tuscany , is within an hour's drive of Pisa airport, but also reachable via airports in Florence or Rome. The nearest airport to Salerno is Naples International airport, but it's also possible to get there via Rome, which is only an hour from Naples on the Train. For Sardinia , the nearest airport is Olbia airport, in the north of the island, which is only a 20 minute transfer from the marina. In Sicily, landing at Palermo airport will get you within an hours drive of the marina in Marsala , whilst Catania airport is recommended for sailing from Portorosa , but is still a two hour drive away.

Where to sail in Italy

We charter yachts and catamarans from five bases in Italy - On the Italian mainland, there's Tuscany in the north for exploring the Tuscan archipelago, and Salerno in the south for the renowned Amalfi coast. We also have a base in Sardinia, for the Maddalena isles (and up to Corsica if you like), and in Sicily, there's Portorosa for diving to the Aeolian isles to the north and Marsala for the Egadi isles to the west. See below for ideas of where to sail when you get there (But be sure to check out our detailed destination guides to find out more).

TUSCANY (Tuscan Archipalago)   Ideas of where to sail: All the islands of the Tuscan archipelago form one of the biggest National Parks in the world. It's possible to sail around beautiful Elba in a week, taking in the fantastic beaches, impressive scenery, and checking out the wonderful natural harbour of Portoferraio and picturesque Marciana. You could also sail over to Corsica and Sardinia.

SALERNO (Amalfi Coast)  Ideas of where to sail: One of the highlights of sailing from Salerno is the stunning Amalfi coast, with buildings, churches and winding roads built along the steep coastline. You can impress your friends (and yourself) by anchoring up and stepping on to exclusive Capri, visit the colourful villages Procida, or sail to Naples to try the world's best pizza. All in the sunshine and under the shadow of the brooding Vesuvius volcano.

SARDINIA   Ideas of where to sail: Our base in Portisco is well-placed for exploring the Costa Smeralda, home of surreal white beaches, turquoise seas, designer goods, and exquisite food - it has been a secret haunt of A-list celebrities for decades. The nearby Maddalena islands offer a tranquillity and beauty, with plenty of bays to explore or anchor at. Further afield, the cliff-top town of Bonifacio is the best thing about Corsica, and it is within easy reach.

PORTOROSA (Aeolian islands)   Ideas of where to sail: From Portorosa you can either explore the historic tourist towns along the Sicilian coast or hop around the nine Aeolian islands, including the volcanic Vulcano (where you can even walk up to the crater) and Stromboli, the pumice stone island of Lipari, and the unspoilt Panarea.

MARSALA (Egadi islands)   Ideas of where to sail: You can sail up or down the Sicilian coast, or heading a few nautical miles west, there are the five mountainous Egadi (Aegadian) islands, comprising largely unspoilt beaches and caves along with authentic and ancient coastal settlements - from neolithic Levanzo with its cave paintings, to the fishing village of Favignana, where you'll find the tastiest and freshest tuna in the Med. Head to Marettimo to find some tranquillity well off the beaten track.

Cost of a Sailing Holiday in Italy?

Prices change depending upon what sort of boat you are chartering, and when you would like to charter, and yachting offers great value for money because the fee includes a full-day activity, a means of transport and your overnight accommodation!

Charters are normally in periods of a week, from Saturday (check-in at 5pm) to Saturday (check-out at 9am), though you're required to be back at the charter base on the Friday evening. You can charter a 3-cabin yacht for as little as €1,200 / week (including end cleaning), 4-cabin yacht from €1,700 / week, or catamarans from €2,250 / week - use the pink search box for live prices and availability.

In addition to the charter fee, there is an end-cleaning fee to be paid, and you'll need to leave a security deposit on check-in (similar to a hire car, and usually placed as a pre-authorisation on a credit card).

You can also add transfers, an outboard motor, early check-in, security deposit insurance or other extras to your booking (if they are not already included) for an additional fee. We can also arrange for a Skipper , Hostess or Chef to be on board - in Italy, these normally cost an average of €1,190 per week, excluding tips.

Where should I go on an Italy yacht charter?

Ligurian Riviera Yacht Charters

Also known as the Italian Riviera, Liguria Riviera yacht rentals are characterised by centuries-old architecture, historic landmarks, and craggy cliffs.  Highlights of the Italian Riviera include  Cinque Terre , a string of former fishing towns carved into the hills overlooking the sea. Nearby  Portofino  shares the same type of brightly-coloured buildings and is a magnet for superyacht charters.

Amalfi Coast Yacht Charters

Amalfi Coast yacht rentals are one of the most beloved cruising grounds in Italy. Also known as the Sorrentine Peninsula, the coast stretches from Naples to Salerno, covering towns such as Sorrento , Positano, Ravello and Amalfi. Islands including Capri and the Phlegrean archipelago (which covers Ischia, Procida and Vivara) are included in the Amalfi Coast. The region has limited beaches, but plenty to see and do onshore- you won't ever be bored on the Amalfi Coast!

The island of nearby Capri is steeped in culture, history and natural beauty. Explore the ancient villas, and discover the wonders of the legendary Blue Grotto.

Sardinia Yacht Charters

Located in the Tyrrhenian sea next to the French island of Corsica , Sardinia is hugely different to the Italian mainland. In contrast to the steep bluffs and deep sapphire sea of the Amalfi Coast and Italian Riviera, Sardinia is bordered by sugary sand beaches and crystal-clear bays.

The north-east coast of the island is the most popular for visiting yachts. For keen sailors, a voyage around La Maddalena archipelago can't be beaten- it's the same location where a number of prestigious regattas are held and it sits on the famous  Costa Smeralda , which   is well-known for its beaches and fantastic snorkeling opportunities.   Porto Cervo is a luxury-lovers dream, with its high-end shops and designer emporiums close to the main port. Meanwhile, Olbia is the quieter sister of Porto Cervo, where you can while away the day wandering around museums and admiring the architecture.

Venice Yacht Charters

the famous canals of Venice where luxury charter yachts are not allowed to cruise but provides a romantic setting while guests are enjoying their vacation

A cultural gem of Italy, Venice is a city that is primed for of art and theatre fans. There are countless museums and art galleries for you to explore during your visit, and while you can't cruise your yacht through the city's inner waterways, you can indulge in a gondola ride- and that's far more intimate and romantic!

Nearby, the island of Murano is famed for its production of unique hand-blown glass art, and makes the perfect stop for a day wandering the boutiques and galleries.

Yacht charters in Venice can also incorporate the beautiful neighboring destinations of Croatia into their itinerary. Speak with your yacht charter broker for more information.

Cinque Terre on the Italian Riviera

An Italy yacht rental vacation offers an abundance of things to see and do. Here is our small selection of some of the most impressive:

Don't Miss:

  • Chryst of the Abyss , an 8-ft bronze statue that stands 17m below the surface of the sea in Portofino, creating a popular diving spot.
  • Fontelina , an iconic beach club set on the rocks in Capri.
  • Villa Rufolo , a villa with beautiful, manicured gardens overlooking the sea in Ravello.
  • Il San Pietro di Positano , a pretty hotel with an elegant terrace looking out over the ocean in the cliffs of Positano.
  • The Faraglioni , a rock formation off the coast of Capri.
  • Cala Goloritze , in Sardinia, a white-sand beach which is consistently voted one of the prettiest in Europe.
  • Hotel Splendido , timeless hotel and SuperyachtSet hotspot in the hills looking out over the bay of Portofino.
  • The Sunken City of Baiae , a small city that sunk into the sea during Roman times close to Naples.
  • The Blue Grotto , or Grotto Azzura, a semi-submerged cave in Capri where the light refracts the sunlight from outside, creating a mesmerizing optical illusion.

From family-friendly fun to dazzling party hotspots, Italy provides it all. You can enjoy laid-back cruises or jam-packed island-hopping and finish your yacht charter with enough memories to last a lifetime.

italy catamaran charter

With a rich history stretching back thousands of years, Italy has long been a pilgrimage destination for culture vultures across the globe, who come in their droves to absorb its beautiful architecture, fine art and iconic culture. From the colosseum in Rome and world-famous artists to its iconic fashion houses, the allure of Italy's rich history and culture is clear.

You’re spoilt for choice when it comes to superyachts for charter in Italy, with one of the largest and most diverse fleets in the world for you to choose from.

Motor Yacht Charters in Italy

You can choose between a small, fast and sporty motor yacht , or a larger one with all the latest amenities; or something in between the two. Motor yachts with planing hulls are ideal for you if you want to zip between destinations quickly. They are sleek, sexy and ideal for speed demons. However, be aware that they consume more fuel and will be less stable at anchor.

Motor yachts with displacement and semi-displacement hulls are generally slower, but offer more space as well as stability at anchor. The largest yachts in the international charter fleet are all displacement or semi-displacement.

Sailing Yacht Charters in Italy

There are plenty of sailing yachts for charter in Italy. Choose between a high-performance ketch, a classic sloop or a catamaran for increased on-board volume.

The country’s west coast is better for experienced sailors who aren’t afraid of wind and swell. The east side is more relaxed, and you can easily incorporate some island-hopping around Croatia into your vacation.

With so many options available, there’s something to suit every type of budget in Italy. The average prices for motor and sailing yacht charter in Italy are as follows;

  • An Italy motor yacht rental can range from $32,600 to $1.3m per week plus expenses
  • A sailing yacht charter in Italy averages from $29,000 to $560k weekly plus expenses

Italy’s charter season runs between April and October. Peak season is in July and August, when the mercury’s at its peak and rainfall and wind levels are at their lowest. Savvy charterers looking to save some money should consider chartering a yacht in Italy during shoulder season, which is generally between April and May, and September and October. While these months aren’t as lively as peak season, you can still enjoy warm weather, fewer tourists, and less competition for slips.

Turquoise waters of Sardinia in Italy

Italy’s west coast is the most popular region for yacht charters, and most of clients will usually book a week or more in order to fully experience all that this slice of paradise has to offer.

Most yacht rentals begin in Naples with access to the most popular destinations like the Amalfi Coast, Capri and Sardinia . For yacht charters on the Italian Riviera, most people begin in Genoa .

You can browse our selection of tailor-made itineraries to help you choose the type of vacation that’s right for you;

Where to End a Italy Yacht Charter

The most popular destination for beginning or ending a yacht charter is by far and wide Naples , especially for the Amalfi Coast, thanks to its excellent international links and well-provisioned superyacht marinas.

While exploring Italy by yacht, you will find plenty of marinas that cater to a wide range of superyachts. This includes:

  • Marina di Stabia  is a luxury marina close to Naples, which caters to yachts up to 100m.
  • Marina Molo Luise  is a second option close to Naples, which caters to yachts measuring up to 140m.
  • Porto Lotti , located in the Italian Riviera, caters to yachts of up to 100m.
  • Darsena Fontanelle on the East Coast has a maximum capacity of 60m.
  • Venice Yacht Pier , which has the capacity to host yachts of up to 120m.

Italy is one of our most popular destinations in the summer months. Therefore, advanced booking is crucial if you want to secure your perfect yacht, in your ideal destination on your preferred dates.

Your broker will also need plenty of time to tailor an itinerary to suit you, and enough time to book ahead for the nights you wish to spend in marinas. We recommened booking up to 3 months in advance to give your yacht charter broker the optimum time to organise everything down to the last detail.

Italy yacht charter itineraries.

Our wide selection of itineraries has been curated with the help of brokers and yachting experts to ensure each one is perfectly tailored for a luxury yacht charter. To make it easier to choose the right fit for you and your party, you can browse our itineraries based on the number of days you’re planning to spend chartering.

From Portofino to Positano and everywhere in between, Italy is home to a variety of charter hotspots. If you’re looking to explore one region in Italy, we recommend an itinerary that covers between 5-7 days. This will give you enough time to spend on shore discovering the delights of new towns and pretty villages, while also enjoying some down time on deck.

If you’re looking to explore two regions that aren’t far from each other (for example the Amalfi Coast and Sardinia) you should consider 7 days. Your itinerary can incorporate an overnight cruise to ensure you don’t waste a day underway.

For more than two regions, or if you’re looking to spend more than one night in any destination, you should consider an itinerary that is longer than 7 days. This will give you enough time to fully experience everything that this beautiful Mediterranean destination has to offer.

Italy is a vast country that covers many sub-regions, so be sure to consider this when browsing our itineraries. Many people will choose to start and end their vacation in Italy, but it’s also possible to incorporate neighbouring countries into an itinerary; a popular destination is the South of France, but you could also incorporate Croatia or Greece.

Italy Yacht Charter Q&A

Italy is one of the yachting capitals of the world, and certain regions are extremely busy during peak season.

You should start the booking process as early as possible, particularly if you’re looking to spend some nights in port. Marinas such as Marina Grande in Capri and Marina di Portofino are among the most in-demand in the Mediterranean, so be sure to let your broker know if you’d like to book a berth in either of these.

As with all popular travel destinations, Italy can be congested and touristy in the height of summer. Cultural sites and landmarks will always be popular attractions, but you can avoid the crowds by dining at exclusive restaurants and beach clubs, which you can find in our Points of Interest section.

In most European countries, VAT is charged on yacht charters. The percentage varies from country to country. Italy charges 22% on the cost of the charter, however, there are some instances where this can be reduced depending on time spent chartering in international (or non-EU) waters. Talk to your charter broker for more information.

If you’re looking to explore one or two areas of Italy, we recommend a 7-day itinerary. However if you’re looking to explore multiple regions of Italy, you should plan a longer itinerary. Luckily, there’s plenty of room for flexibility and longer and shorter itineraries can be arranged according to the needs of your charter party.

With a huge variety of yachts to choose from, there’s a charter yacht in Italy to suit every budget.

For a mid-sized motor yacht during peak season, you can expect to pay anywhere between $90,000 to $300,000 per week plus expenses during peak season.

You should be aware that the price displayed next to the yachts on our site are base rates, and do not cover additional expenses.

Additional costs include the cost of fuel, berthing, VAT, crew tips and food and beverages. You should factor these costs in and typically expect to pay upwards of 30 - 35% of the base rate on top of your charter fee.

To help you get an idea of the yachts that are available, you can browse ALL crewed yachts available for charter in Italy on our site. When you’ve chosen your perfect yacht, you can make an inquiry and a charter broker will be in touch.

They will take care of the booking process, and talk to you about what you want from your vacation so that they can provide you with an incredible experience down to the very last detail.

If you’re still undecided on the yacht that you want, that’s not a problem; your charter broker will consider your requirements and recommend a selection for you.

There are plenty of opportunities for sailing in Italy. The country’s west coast is ideal for experienced sailors who don’t mind wind and swells. Islands like Sicily, Sardinia, Capri and Ischia are all great locations for a sailing vacation. Meanwhile, Italy’s sheltered east coast is typically calmer, and you could even incorporate some island-hopping in Croatia.

Our clients typically book a yacht charter in Italy between June and August. However, the weather in certain regions is still pleasant as early as June and as late in the season as September.

In September in particular, the seas are warmer and there are far fewer tourists, so this could be a good time to visit if you’re looking for a more relaxed vacation.

Where you begin your yacht charter in Italy depends on where you want to charter. One of the most popular start destinations is Naples, which provides access to all the most well-known yachting destinations including the Amalfi Coast, Capri, Sardinia and the Italian Riviera (or Liguria).

Italy luxury yacht charter

Awash with elegant cliff-top villages and tempting cruising grounds around every corner, a luxury yacht charter is one of the best ways to discover all that Italy has to offer. Whether cruising around the unspoilt Aeolian islands, touring the impossibly pretty towns of the Amalfi coast and picture-perfect Capri , hitting the hotspots of Sardinia or revelling in the world-famous cuisine, culture and heritage of Tuscany and its islands, the  Italian Riviera is always a good idea for a summer yacht charter.

Italy yacht season and weather

The peak summer months of July and August provide warm, sunny days with highs of 30°C. During August, many Italians take the entire month off work, meaning resorts and coastal areas are very busy. June and September offer quieter cruising grounds and very pleasant temperatures.

Climates do vary from north to south, with the south generally experiencing milder winters. In October, Sicily often has long, warm sunny days with temperatures still in the mid-20s.

Italy yacht charter itineraries

La Spezia’s Porto Lotti can accommodate yachts up to 180 metres and Porto Mirabello has capacity for yachts up to 140 metres – both good jumping-off points for Portovenere and the Cinque Terre. Rome Marina Yachting is in the port of Civitavecchia and has berths up to 100 metres. The marina is an hour and 15 minutes from Rome by car. On Sicily , Marina di Riposto is an ideal base for visiting Mount Etna and Catania, is six nautical miles from Taormina and has moorings for yachts up to 80 metres. Porto Cervo marina on Sardinia has moorings for yachts up to 120 metres. Porto di Mergellina in Naples has moorings for up to 75 metres.

Awash with old Hollywood glamour and synonymous with Italian aristocracy, the Amalfi coast is one of Italy’s most famous and coveted cruising grounds. Departing from Naples and the shadow of the volcanic peak of Vesuvius, charterers can venture 20 nautical miles to the low key isle of Procida, then take a 10 nautical-mile passage to the volcanic wonders of Ischia, hop south to the famed isle of Capri before cruising 20 nautical miles to Amalfi and the neighbouring gems of Ravello and Positano. For those wanting a mix of city and sea, charters can also make an overnight passage and arrive for sightseeing in Rome.

The island of Sardinia is a superyacht magnet and its famous Costa Smeralda attracts the yachting elite every summer. Mixing Michelin restaurants and five-star hotels with kaleidoscopic bays, sublime beaches and celebrity haunts such as Porto Cervo, Sardinia is one of the hottest charter destinations in Europe.

Charters in the Tuscan archipelago are equally bewitching, with the islands of Elba, Gorgona, Capraia, Montecristo, Giglio and Giannutri home to pristine shores, stunning coves and charming villages steeped in history. The islands form a convenient stepping stone between the coastline of Tuscany and Corsica, allowing charterers to combine the delights of Italy and the French island in on trip.

Further north the pearls of the Ligurian coastline, the UNESCO protected Cinque Terre, comprise the picture-perfect towns of Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore cling to the cliffs, while romantic Portofino is a must-visit.

For natural wonders and more off-the-beaten-track adventures, the volcanic Aeolian Islands lie 25 miles off the north-east coast of Sicily and provide a varied and stunning itinerary. Sicily itself has also catapulted onto the charter scene, with an enticing mix of secret grottos, secluded coves and glittering beaches.

About Italy

Why is Italy a good sailing destination?

With a coastline that meanders through the heart of the Mediterranean, Italy stands as a sailor’s dream. Yachting.Rent believes that Italy’s allure isn’t just rooted in its geography but also in its rich tapestry of culture, history, and nature which makes it a prime sailing destination.

From the rugged cliffs of the Amalfi Coast to the serene waters surrounding Sardinia, Italy offers a diverse sailing landscape. Each region unfurls its distinct charm, ensuring that every journey feels like a new adventure. The Ligurian Sea enchants with places like Cinque Terre, a string of centuries-old seaside villages on the rugged Italian Riviera. Further south, the Tyrrhenian Sea is dotted with islands, such as Elba and Capri, which beckon sailors with their mystique. On the Adriatic side, destinations like Venice offer a unique maritime experience, navigating the city’s famed canals. With such varied coastlines and marine topographies, Italy is an endless playground for both novice and experienced sailors.

However, Italy’s appeal isn’t just its natural beauty. It’s the intertwining of this beauty with the nation’s rich cultural and gastronomical offerings. Anchoring in Sicilian ports can lead to a culinary journey tasting authentic Arancini or Cannoli. In Tuscany, sailors can venture inland to experience some of the world’s most renowned vineyards. Every port, every harbor in Italy tells a story – be it of ancient Roman civilizations, Renaissance art, or modern Italian lifestyle. This blend of sailing with immersive experiences is what Yachting.Rent champions, ensuring that when you set sail in Italy, it’s not just a trip on the water but a journey through the very soul of the Mediterranean.

Yacht Charter in Italy

Heed by Azimut - Top rates for a Charter of a private Superyacht in Italy

Italy yacht charter

Known for its romantic charm, chic coastal towns, and world-famous cuisine, Italy is a yacht charter paradise. There's plenty of things to do with coastal towns and cities on the Mediterranean and Adriatic Seas. Take your pick from family-friendly seaside resorts to high-end party hotspots, and rugged and remote islands and beautiful locations to explore. There is over 7,200 km of coastline in Italy, creating an abundance of yacht charter itineraries perfect even for the most discerning of elite travelers.

How much to charter a yacht in Italy?

Italy is blessed with beautiful weather and plenty of seaside towns and nearby islands to explore. It's no surprise that all kinds of yachts cruise along the Mediterranean and Adriatic Seas on any given day, marveling at the beautiful scenery and dropping off anchor to enjoy the charming towns and ports' spoils. To charter a sailing yacht in Italy can cost you around $6,500 for a week's rent. This type of boat includes five cabins for ten people on board and has a length of 51 feet. A catamaran, on the other hand, can cost around $11,000 for a week's charter. This type of yacht features four cabins for eight people, with a length of 52 feet. And lastly, a motor yacht that's 88 feet in length can cost around $43,000 for a week's rent in Italy.

What are the most popular yacht holidays in Italy?

Italy offers a vast diversity of destinations. Italy has it all from quiet and relaxing islands to party hotspots to luxury hilltop towns favored by the rich and famous. The Italian Riviera is recognized as the most stunning destination for yacht charters in Italy. It is found on the Mediterranean Sea and renowned for its upscale restaurants, cultural landmarks, and centuries-old architecture. The towns of Liguria, Portofino, and Rapallo are the most popular spots to moor a yacht charter, as well as Cinque Terre, a group of former fishing villages that are now popular vacation spots. On the Riviera tip is the region of Tuscany, which is a captivating destination for a yacht charter.

Additionally, a yacht charter in Italy is never complete without a visit to the Amalfi Coast. Romantic, beautiful, and lush, Positano, Capri, and Sorrento's seaside towns offer breathtaking scenery, pastel-colored houses on hilltops and cliffs, and romantic venues. If you're on the search for the perfect honeymoon destination in Italy, then a yacht charter to the Amalfi Coast will offer you the most romantic experience you can ever have on a yacht charter. There are limited beaches in the Amalfi Coast, but its lack of white sand beaches is overshadowed by the beauty found onshore. Explore the ancient villas of Capri, stroll around Ravello's manicured gardens, and visit the thermal spas on the islands of Procida and Ischia, which were formed through volcanic activity.

But if you're looking for more rugged landscapes, Sicily and the Aeolian Islands are your best bet. The Aeolian Islands' crystal blue waters are a sight to behold, where you get to hop from one volcanic island to another and witness a steaming volcano on Stromboli. In Palermo, the Gothic architecture and famous palm-tree lined streets will take you back in time, and if you desire to spend a day on a beach, head to the town of Marsala for some peace and quiet, and unspoiled beaches. Further from the mainland of Italy is the island of Sardinia, close to the French island of Corsica. It offers an entirely different side of Italy where sandy beaches abound. Explore the La Maddalena archipelago, or visit Porto Cervo, a luxury yacht charter haven, where you can find high-end shops and designer emporiums in town.

Where to go on a luxury yacht charter in Italy?

The Italian Riviera will find the most luxurious yachts hopping from one coastal town to another. Porto Lotti in Liguria offers 506 berths and accommodates boats with a maximum length of 100 meters. Offering the perfect jumping-off point to explore the Riviera, you can explore dramatic coastlines, colorful seaside towns, and delicious regional cuisine in your Italian Riviera yacht charter. Naples, or Napoli, features more than 18 marinas and is the perfect destination for yacht charters in Italy. Most charters start or end in Naples, which is also one of Italy's most visited cities.

And of course, a trip to this Western European country is never complete without visiting Venice. Considered to be among the most romantic cities in the world, a yacht charter can take you to the islands off the coast of Venice on the Adriatic Sea. And when you drop anchor on the Venice Yacht Pier, where you will find 25 berths and accommodating yachts up to 120 meters in length, you can explore the city's web of canals, renaissance architecture, romantic and charming bridges, and narrow cobbled streets. There's an essence to Italy that can only be experienced through a luxury yacht charter. With beautiful waters, some of the world's most enchanting coastal towns, and natural beauty captivating the most seasoned yacht enthusiasts, Italy is entirely best enjoyed through a yacht charter on the Adriatic or the Mediterranean.

Italy Yacht Charter Destinations @ Catamaran Italy Charter @ Sailing Italy

Taly is home to some of the best sailing grounds in the Mediterranean, as evidenced by the large number of boats that are kept in the area. The lack of natural harbors located along the coast and the limited number of places in the marinas can make it really challenging to find a berth during the summer months on the Italian coast. The islands of Sardinia and Sicily tend to enjoy more wind than the Bay of Naples and the Riviera (check the weather), but, in general, there is a lot less during the summer months than other times of the year, and yachts tend to have to motor more here than elsewhere in the Mediterranean. The Italians’ love affair with speed explains the high numbers of motor boats relative to sailing boats in the area. But when the sun shines and there is a warm, steady breeze, most yachtsmen would feel that the wait had been worth it. The variety of scenery, the fabulous climate, the beautifully clear water, and Italian food and wine certainly go some way toward making up for the lack of wind! Our yachts are in many yacht charter centers in the key sailing areas of Italy. Italian regulations state that skippers wishing to sail on a catamaran for charter in Italy more than six miles offshore in Italian waters need to hold an International Certificate of Competence (ICC) . They also need to be able to produce the registration document for the boat and a valid insurance certificate. There is no lifeboat service in Italy, and emergencies are dealt with by the Guardia Costiera.

Most people refer to the whole sailing area as the Mediterranean Sea, but Italian waters are actually divided into several different areas: the North Adriatic Sea, the Central Adriatic Sea, the South Adriatic Sea , the Sardinian Sea, the Strait of Sardinia, the Strait of Sicily , the Ligurian Sea, the North Tyrrhenian Sea, the Central Tyrrhenian Sea, the South Tyrrhenian Sea, the North Ionian Sea, and the South Ionian Sea .

North Adriatic

The coastline of the north Adriatic is flatter and less interesting than other areas of Italy, mainly made up of mile after mile of sandy beaches that are not so interesting for catamaran charter sailing in Italy. However, there are many interesting places to visit, such as Venice, Trieste, Ravenna, and Rimini. The proximity to the northern coastline and islands of Croatia make this area very popular for catamaran charter cruising.

There is little of interest for the cruising yachtsman in this area of the Adriatic for catamaran charters. There are a few notable harbors such as San Giorgio, San Benedetto del Tronto, Pescara, and Ortona, but most of the cruising interest is either further north or to the south of the Italian coast.

South Adriatic

The heel of Italy stretches from the port of Otranto up to the Gargano Peninsula. This area is probably the most interesting in the Italian Adriatic for catamaran charters , as the coastline becomes very flat and the sea very shallow inshore as you travel north Italy. Also, from here, it is only a day’s sail to the island of Corfu in Greece and the fabulous sailing waters of Greece . The Tremeti Islands, off the northern coast of the Gargano Peninsula, are very beautiful, totally unspoiled, and perfect for catamaran charters in Italy. There are no marina facilities there, and it is only safe to anchor in settled weather. The harbors of Otranto, Vieste, Bari, Brindisi, and Manfredonia all have marina facilities.

The cities of Trapani and Marsala are attractive destinations, but further to the south, the facilities diminish somewhat. The area is slowly being developed, but some care should be taken when passing through this area. The eastern side of Sicily has some beautiful cities and interesting sailing destinations, in particular: Siracusa, Catania, and Taormina are well worth a visit. The marina at Riposto provides ringside seats for any fireworks shows that Mount Etna chooses to put on! A trip through the Straits of Messina is made more interesting by the presence of whirlpools at certain states of the tide! Although not dangerous to cruising yachts, they look a little threatening and can affect the steering at times.

The port of Genoa has several yacht harbors, so you can come with a catamaran.
