YACHT MANAGEMENT

Fed up with cost in-transparency, pay-or-die – or yet another out of service situation of your yacht?

Marine Consulting offers boutique-style Yacht Management services to a handful of owners.

PROJECT MANAGEMENT

Whether building, converting, refitting, or repairing a yacht – professional Project Management is required to be aware of all possible bottlenecks when first decisions are to be made. We, at Marine Consulting are 25 years in the industry, have seen it all and pride ourselves at having delivered more than 50 projects to happy yacht owners. Many of them repeat customers.

NEWBUILD MANAGEMENT

Our services often start from the early days, when supporting the owner with the definition of the yachts´ main characteristics and tendering the project to a handful of suitable yards, and/or designers; followed by contract – and specification review with the yard; defining the adequate outfit; as well as establishing of mile stones. During the build phase, we act as Owner´s representatives towards the yard, to assure full compliance with contract and specification. Our project-specifically contracted technicians will follow the construction onsite. Upon delivery, our Newbuild Management packages include the supervision of sea trials and functioning tests including the issuance of non compliance lists and advise on compensation or post delivery remediation scenarios.

REFIT / REPAIR / CONVERSION MANAGEMENT

Whenever yard time is at stake, be it for class renewal; maintenance and repair; new paint; or conversion, our experience, knowledge and contacts to the industry will assure time schedules are kept and you get what you pay for.

As independent Marine Surveyors specialized in Leisure – and Superyachts, we offer our 25 years of experience to Yacht Insurers, Underwriters, Brokers and Owners.

INSURANCE SURVEYS

Claim Adjustment and on site claim management is our bread and butter business. We pride ourselves on many years continuous appointments by the market leading insurers.

CONDITION SURVEYS

As yacht enthusiasts, in the industry for more years than the average age of the global yacht-park, we know exactly what to look for when assessing the condition of whatever yacht. Our detailed and conclusive reports, are often the essential document when buying a yacht.

VALUATION SURVEYS

Ascertaining the value of a yacht, whether for sale, mortgage or insurance purpose, is yet another core competence of Marine Consulting. As fully independent surveyors our Valuation Surveys are made for nothing else but to protect the interest of our customer.

PAINT SURVEYS

Through our recently established cooperation with a yacht paint specialist, we can now tackle paint topics inhouse, and offer Paint Surveys as stand alone- or as part of the other Marine Consulting services to our clients.

MICHAEL KURTZ

Before becoming a Trademark in the international Yacht Industry, Michael studied political ecomomics and had his own yacht repair and charter business in the north of Germany.

In 1984, Michael joined Pantaenius Yacht Insurance. From a previous key client, he transformed to become the relentless protagonist of Pantaenius` international growth.

Mid 90ties, he moved to Southern France to establish Pantaenius Monaco. 25 years research and investigation into questionable yacht insurance claims, with a track record of disclosing fraud on 350 + apparently sunken or stolen yachts, brought him the nickname of “Mike the Gun”. As founding partner, Michael knows exactly who needs to be engaged when things get difficult.

STEFANO RUSCITTI

Stefano serves the yachting industry since 25 years as Marine Surveyor, Yachtmanager and Project Supervisor.

He studied naval architecture in Genoa and developed his hanseatic business mentality based on trust, honesty and reliability in the early nineties, when working with Pantaenius Yachtinsurance in Hamburg. After 11 years with his Genoa based Yacht Consultancy Seametria SRL, he founded Marine Consulting MC in Monaco in 2014.

A few recent examples of our work include:

Hurricane Response – Assisted managers and H&M underwriters of a fleet of over 450 luxury yachts heavily impacted by a category 4 hurricane in the BVI. This involved initial triage and stabilization efforts for the fleet, detailed assessment of damages, coordination of repairs, salvage, transportation and safe environmental disposal of heavily damaged yachts, arranging for sale of CTL yachts, coordinating removal of wreckage and debris to the satisfaction of port authorities. The project required active involvement from 11 IMC team members over a period of several months in an infrastructure-ravaged region, hindering communication and limiting accommodation. 

H&M Survey – Responded to grounding of a Superyacht in Florida, evaluated damages and monitored repairs in the Bahamas. 

P&I Survey and Claim Support – Investigated collision between yacht and fishing vessel. Evaluated damages and liabilities. Engaged in settlement negotiations.

Yacht Owner – Supported yacht owners and legal counsel in investigating and reporting on causation of a capsized yacht.

Crew Injury – Assisted the Owners and underwriters of a super yacht by providing appropriate medical assistance to a seriously injured crew member. Corresponded with various medical service providers in monitoring and controlling treatment costs and audited invoices.

In the most recent years, yachting has experienced an explosion of growth within the industry. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the industry has witnessed unprecedented numbers of first-time large boat (100’+) owners. This, in turn, has led to record numbers of large boats being sold, and created a market of Owners that have never known what it takes to manage or run these magnificent vessels.

There are few, if any, that exist to cohesively offer a one-stop solution from start to finish throughout the manufacturing process all the way through crew placement and daily operations and ongoing maintenance.

Founder Info

Founder, Capt. Rex Witkamp is an experienced lic. USCG 200-Ton Master as well as a Licensed and Bonded Florida Yacht Broker with over a decade in the first responder role as a Paramedic/Firefighter. Rex grew up in Florida and developed a deep connection with the water learning to swim before learning to walk. The Aquatics Industry has chosen Rex to use his background to provide value to areas of the industry that are underserved. With over 25 years working in industries such as the private sector, healthcare, export, IT, and government, Rex has lived and worked overseas in Europe, Western Pacific. Rex's love for the aquatic industry has served him well in life. Working in the private sport fishing and charter yacht industry has allowed for the identification of more than several key points of consultation and products that provide underserved yet high-value to the industry. CYC was founded by Sean Cassidy as a full-service yacht management company providing support to all phases of yacht operation and ownership.  The son of a tall ship captain, Sean first went to sea at the age of 16 on a square rigged sailing ship in the Mediterranean, eventually becoming a tall ship captain himself at the age of 30.  Sean spent a total of 30 years on board sail and motor yachts as well as small passenger ships working his way from deckhand through the ranks serving in virtually every position possible on board with the final 20 years in command of vessels as large as 282ft.  He has crossed the Atlantic on a 57ft sailing yacht, a 361ft square rigger and all sizes of motor yacht many times over.  Eventually coming ashore to take over the yacht management division of IYC, Sean spent 5 years as Director of Yacht Management before moving on to become Head of Yacht Services Miami for Burgess.  Now Sean’s wealth of experience serving on board yachts and leading some of the top yacht companies in the industry is the backbone of Cassidy Yacht Consulting and the services we provide.

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.
