Best time to Visit!

Discovery is available for charter in Seattle, Puget Sound and the San Juan Islands from mid September to early May each year. We think this is also the best time to visit. In the rain shadow of the Olympic Mountains, the San Juans see the sun on an average 247 days a year and are a popular and often crowded cruising destination. The Indian summers (especially September and October) as well as the beautiful spring weather offer a rare opportunity to experience this island archipelago away the crowds and is our favorite time of the year.

Our trip was a great success. We are sailors and Scott is the most knowledgeable sailor we have met. Moreover the navigation and radar equipment is top grade enabling motoring in a morning of deep fog with ease. We sailed for 4 nights (5 days) and winds enabled us to sail without motor assistance for many hours a day. The islands are lovely and a big surprise was the looming, snow capped Mt Baker in the background on several occasions. Seals were abundant and on one occasion we saw half a dozen sea lions sunning themselves on a nearby rock. Tod the mate was also the cook who trained for 2 years in a cooking school. The food was excellent and every effort was made--successfully--to meet the requests we had submitted prior to the cruise. We enthusiastically recommend this cruise company.

Kristen’s efforts to please us, especially given some of dietary restrictions, was noteworthy and extraordinarily tasteful. She is remarkable. And Cloe and Zane: always about the yacht assuring that we were without need. And such nice, nice individuals. And we loved the “uniforms”. And, then there was you. I have been about yachts for 50 years; yes, 50. I have been aboard 10 chartered yachts with captains and crew. I know expertise. You are beyond remarkable. We felt very safe and enjoyed seeing you “in action”. Then there was your hospitality. Charming. Quite charming. And, yes, we were sad to leave. All to say, we all had a marvelous time. Dear Jim, Fran & Sally, We have had a most fantastic cruise with a most generous Captain. Sally in the galley had the most satisfying food of any cruise I have been on. The sea lions and seals were great to watch and the whales put on a fine show, with their fluking and blowing. The scenery was awesome. The sailing was smooth. Well, this is Day 5 for my week long adventure on the Jamal. Grandpa & Grandma will still be with all of you for a week after we leave. Trent & I, (newlyweds), have had the most spectacular time with all of you. Our crew, Captain Jen, Kathy (Kiki) & Sally Wally. You have made this trip a dream come true for us. We came here to relax before our big day, & we have definitely accomplished that. It was above & beyond anything we could have imagined! Alaska is beautiful & breath-taking, but not half as beautiful & breath-taking as you three ladies. The hospitality, amazing, the food, outstanding, the memories, forever! The generosity of our Captain, even though she was on a schedule, was perfect. She knew how badly I, (Allie), wanted to see whales. She found them & took the time out for us to enjoy them. I shall never forget her for that; I will never forget any of the crew. They will be forever in our hearts and I truly wish they could be at our wedding. Thank you so much for your kindnesses. Sensational sights of whales, glaciers, and bears have made this voyage on the Jamal the most fantastic way to see Alaska. Taking those narrow passages and hearing the thunderous crack of the glaciers remains for me the highlight of the trip. Thanks to you, Jennifer, we have seen as much of Alaska as possible in a short time. You took us to waterfalls, sea lions, warm & hot springs and superbly maneuvered the boat to sight whales. Travel in tandem with DK, Stacy and Megan proved to be fortuitous, with them some of our group went fishing and even saw bears in action. And, Jen, your crew of Sally, Sally Jo, and Cathy went out of their way at all times to make us extremely comfortable, well fed, and entertained. You have all enriched my life and I will miss you. Alaska will be here if we ever decide to return, but we would be lacking something if we didnt see you again.

Captain Jennifer Hanna, who also holds a U. S. Coast Guard Master’s license, has cruised the waters of Puget Sound to Alaska with her father, Jim, all of her life. Her precise navigational skills and exceptional knowledge of seamanship have been valuable assets on charters. She has recently spent a year sailing the Pacific coast to southern Mexico. Jennifer earned a Master’s of Education degree and a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology from Western Washington University. She has taught elementary and middle school in the Bellingham area since 1988. Her love of the sea is reflected in her many interests which include fishing, swimming, water skiing, sailing, snorkeling and surfing. Jennifer is certified in scuba diving and First Aid.

Types of whales you can come across in the Pacific Northwest:

Southern Resident Killer Whales – Southern resident killer whales are some of the most researched whales in the world. They spend much of their time in the waters around Washington and British Columbia throughout the year feeding on their favorite food - Chinook salmon. This group of killers whales is very playful, acrobatic and at the same time social too.

Transient Killer Whales – Spotting transient orca whales in the waters of the Pacific Northwest is common due to an increase in their prey – harbor seals, California and Steller sea lions and harbor porpoise. Watching transient orcas hunt is very interesting and exciting! In the recent past, transient and bigg's killer whales have become more prevalent. They eat marine mammals: seals, sea lions, porpoise, dolphins – even other whales!

Humpback Whales – Over the last few years, humpback whales have made a comeback to the waters of Pacific Northwest in large numbers. Humpback whales are one of the most beloved and recognized whales in the world. Found in all the world's oceans, each humpback whale has a unique personality and appearance. If you're lucky enough you might spot mother humpbacks that nurse their calves with San Juan's Yacht Charters .

Minke Whales – Considered to be one of the most mysterious marine animals of the Pacific Northwest area, they are the most loved of all. Minkes are relatively solitary and spend their time feeding on schools of small baitfish. Minke whales can be found by smell alone - their breath is quite memorable! If you are lucky enough to catch a whiff, it is an experience that will long be remembered with San Juan's Yacht Charters .

Gray Whales – Currently, gray whales hold the record of the longest mammal migration as they travel from coldwater feeding grounds to the warm calving lagoons in Baja, Mexico. Gray whales are the only bottom-feeding whale, which means there are very rare instances that they will scoop up an entire mouthful of the sea floor. While they feed in the shallow, calm waters – it is indeed a sight to behold.

Since 1982,  Bellhaven has been your one stop source for  Power   and Sailing  Charters to the San Juan Islands and Canadian Gulf Islands. Please take a few minutes to look at the charter boats we have available to help you enjoy what the Pacific Northwest and San Juan Islands have to offer. We know how to do the San Juans right. We can even let you know where a few of those “special” places are.  Returning customers will receive a 5% discount on their next charter.

Our Maintenance Program is the key to an enjoyable cruise. Our boats are maintained on a stringent weekly, monthly and annual preventive maintenance plan.  However, if a problem does arise, we are available 24 hours a day to provide you with expert assistance.  We also have a  chase boat we have,  fortunately,  is rarely needed.

All charter boats come with VHF radio, depth sounders, compass, local charts, tide tables and local cruising guides, fenders and safety equipment:  fire extinguishers, adult life jackets and flashlights and batteries. Marine toilets, tool box,  dock lines,  anchors, bilge pumps, crab pot or ring with line.   Assorted galley supplies and cleaning materials applicable to the boat. Please note all charter fees are subject to WA sales tax and the charterer is responsible for fuel used.

Our guest cabins are clean, cozy, and oh so comfortable! Choose from a Queen-sized berth in our VIP Stateroom or two single berths in our Port Stateroom. There is a shared guest head with a shower.

Crew quarters are in the berths forward with a separate head and shower.

3-day Weekend Getaway Cruises to the San Juan Islands

These trips leave Friday morning and return on Sunday evening. We leave Bellingham around 9am and can be in the San Juan Islands in time for a beach walk or short kayak paddle before dinner. We anchor in a different location each night. Enjoy hiking, wildlife viewing, and kayaking, as well as a good night’s rest in one of our cabins with comfortable queen-sized beds and private heads. 4-day San Juan Island Escapes

These cruises are longer and give you more time to explore the San Juan Islands. They leave out of Bellingham at 9am on Thursday morning and return on Sunday around 5pm. We offer 4-day cruises on our schedule, but we also welcome custom and private cruises that are for as long as you like.

We take our time cruising at about 7 knots to each night’s destination. Along the way we will make stops for hiking, tide pooling or shopping at one of the many small towns that make up the charming character of the San Juans. As with all of our cruises, your vacation includes all meals cooked by Christine on her wood cook-stove. Enjoy hand made croissants still warm from the oven for breakfast, or for dinner savory halibut tacos with just made corn tortillas and salsa prepared that afternoon. Guided Kayak Mothership Cruises (By Special Arrangement)

Let the David B be your base camp. On our guided kayak tours you’ll explore a new area each day. In the mornings, you’ll be guided on an easy paddle of 1 1/2 to 2 hours before coming back to the boat for lunch and a change of location.  In the mid-afternoon, we’ll re-launch the kayaks for a comfortable paddle before a filling dinner with wine and conversation.

All of the sea kayak equipment, meals and, of course, guides are included. No kayaking experience necessary, the trips are open to adventurous people of all abilities, and because of the small group size (8 passengers max.) we can easily guide guests with different paddling abilities.
