About the OCC

The Ocean Cruising Club exists to encourage long-distance sailing in small boats and is the true 'Home Port' for the ocean-going sailor. Members understand what it means to be at sea, to be completely reliant on our own skills, to be subject to the whims of Mother Nature, to be humbled and empowered at one and the same time. This is what sets us apart from other organisations, even as it draws us together as a group. We bring the spirit of seafaring to our association by always being willing to assist any fellow sailor we meet, either afloat or ashore.

Values and Culture

Every full member has made a 1,000-nautical mile offshore passage in a vessel of 70 feet or less; associate members are committed to the achievement of that goal. This standard distinguishes us from all other sailing clubs. While this defines who can join the OCC, it is more than a collection of people who have made a long, offshore passage. In sharing their feelings about the OCC, our members try to describe something elusive and intangible. They use words like camaraderie, like-minded, experience, accomplishment, non-elitist, adventurous, giving. The OCC offers us a place to be together, to share our experiences, to enjoy one another's company. Though it has no physical clubhouse, it is, in a way, the "home port" for all of us who have sailed long distances across big oceans. OCC Members are cruisers who comply with international, national and local laws and regulations; respect communities, their customs, the environment and other people including other Members; demonstrate honesty, fairness and courtesy; and are responsible and accountable for their actions.

Sharing Experience

Our membership as a whole has more experience offshore than any other sailing organisation and they are passionate about sharing it with like minded people. By drawing on the experiences of all of our members and sharing the lessons they have learned the hard way, we have built a body of knowledge that will help future generations of offshore sailors.

Our Port Officers and Regional Rear Commodores

Events and rallies.

To draw members together, the OCC organises a number of cruises, rallies and get togethers in different areas of the world. Regional Rear Commodores organise local events in Australia, Canada, Europe, Ireland, UK and the USA. With these events and a significant number of members on passage, the blue and yellow burgee with its flying fish motif is carried proudly throughout the cruising waters of the world.

Ocean Cruising Type of People

From its earliest days, the OCC has celebrated those who dared to brave the ocean in small boats, and many of its early members are now legend: founder Hum Barton, Francis Chichester, David Lewis, Bill Tilman, the Reverend Bob Shepton, John Guzzwell and famed boat designers Rod Stephens, Bill Crealock and Colin Mudie among many others.

The people in the Ocean Cruising Club represent, to me, the distilled essence of the cruising community, a potent combination of accomplishment, experience, idealism, eccentricity, generosity and humility. The only ticket to entry is by stepping aboard your boat, casting off the docklines and making a real passage. The only way to contribute is through assistance to others you meet along the way and encouragement to those who hope to follow in your wake. Just like the cruising community, the OCC is multinational and represents people from every economic, political and social stratum in society. Everyone comes in as an equal; no one is judged except by Neptune, everyone fails sometimes.

But the cruising community has no fixed address, forms and reforms in different places at different times. Members of the OCC bring that cruising spirit to a vibrant Club with established centres and activities around the world. It offers camaraderie not just aboard but also ashore, by assisting those dreaming of heading off to sea and including those who no longer make their own voyages. The people in the OCC understand what it means to have a dream. More than that, they understand the exacting requirements of dreams, accept the potentially devastating costs and have experienced the incalculable rewards.

To be part of the OCC is to be part of group of people who have said 'yes' to adventure and to life and who will welcome you if you choose to do the same.

Following are several extracts of expert opinions as found online. There are some interesting contradictions in these, but there is also room for consensus. Most do agree that there are alternatives to where the burgee may be flown. John Rousmaniere, in his comprehensive flag etiquette article published on Sailnet.com (see excerpt below) illustrates two possible places besides the masthead. Below the starboard spreader on the main mast having become the most prevalent. Many people agree with his thesis. The RYA does go one step further, which solves another dilemma many vessels including our own face: where to fly a secondary burgee or burgees. Their assertion is simply from the port spreader. Opinions found online:

New york yacht club.

“Only one yacht club burgee should be flown at any one time. If you are in the home waters of one yacht club, you should fly that yacht club's burgee. If you are in "neutral" waters, you can fly either burgee. If you are in neutral waters, but on a cruise sponsored by a yacht club, however, you should fly that yacht club's burgee. I consulted the New York Yacht Club's highest authorities in researching this question.”

Eastern Yacht Club (Marblehead, Mass.)

“Proper etiquette for flying a club burgee is not to fly more than one at a time. While in port at a particular club, one should fly the appropriate burgee to the yacht club that one belongs to. If a dual membership to clubs in the same port exists a choice must be made to fly one or the other. The above is opinion based on questioning members of the Eastern Yacht Club, as well as, information on pages 581 through 590 of the 1999 Chapman's Piloting. Aside from flying flags, members of multiple clubs and organizations often display crossed burgees on the varnished nameplates on their vessels. I have seen as many as four different clubs represented on one yacht.”

“When vessels owners belong to more than one yacht club, only one burgee is flown; usually the club's where the yacht is based. However there are exceptions: A. When a vessel is, for instance from SDYC NHYC and also belongs to Catalina Island Yacht club; this vessel would fly the Catalina burgee while in the vicinity of Catalina.  B. If the vessel belongs to SFYC and SBYC; based at SFYC but participating in a SBYC event {no matter where} it should display the SBYC burgee.  In summary, only one burgee is flown depending on the location and /or the event.”

“The short answer if you are a sailor the highest place of honor is the starboard halyard on spreader. You decide which is the senior club, in your mind. Other pennants would be flown under it in declining order of importance, e.g. when in Canada, you fly the Canadian courtesy flag on top, then the SYC burgee and then your officer’s or house burgee.”

“The Burgee is a small flag displaying the symbol of the skipper's yacht club or other sailing organization. It may be flown day and night. Most people opt to fly the burgee lower in the rig, hoisted to the end of the lowest starboard spreader on a thin flag halyard. While purists rail this practice, it is an accepted adaptation of another tradition, which is that the starboard rigging is a position of honor (when you visit a foreign port, that's where we fly the host country's flag). Besides being reasonable, flying the burgee in the starboard rigging is such a widespread custom that to try to end it would be close to impossible.

The Private Signal is a small, custom-designed and custom-made flag that carries symbols standing for the owner, so it can basically be anything. The signal may be flown day or night, but is not displayed when another sailor is in command. (The rule is: the private signal and burgee follow the sailor, not the boat.) On a multi-masted boat, the private signal is flown at the head of the aftermost mast. On a sloop, the private signal may be flown from the starboard rigging, either below the burgee or alone.”

“Almost every Yacht Club has a unique Burgee (flag) that identifies a member's boat. A modern sloop rigged sailing vessel should fly their burgee from a lanyard under the starboard mast spreader, while an older style sailing vessel flies the burgee from the main masthead. Powerboats fly their burgee from a short staff on the bow.”

“Most yacht clubs have a unique burgee (triangular flag) that identifies a member's boat. A modern sloop rigged sailing vessel should fly it's burgee from a lanyard under the starboard spreader. On an older style sailing vessel the burgee is flown from the main masthead. A Powerboat flies its burgee from a short staff on the bow.”

“Single masted sailboats normally have three possible locations from which to display flags - the masthead, the starboard spreader and aft (the mainsail leech or the stern staff). Underway under sail alone, the traditional recipe has been that the burgee appears at the masthead and the ensign at the gaff or two-thirds the way up the leech of the main. An organizational flag, a courtesy flag when in foreign waters or a signal may appear at the spreader hoist.

The ensign has migrated from the mainsail leech to the stern staff, a move formally recognized in the early '70s by both the New York YC and the USYRU. Purists resisted the change, but it seems safe to say that a vast majority of Bermudian sloops now carry their ensigns at the stern under sail or power.

Another change that's taking place - albeit unrecognized by any authority - but now apparently standard, is the descent of the burgee from the masthead to the starboard spreader. Now that most mastheads have become electronics forests, it has become not only difficult but potentially expensive to plant a flag among all the delicate feelers.”

“Traditionally, the burgee is flown at the head (top) of the forward most mast on a small pole (called a pig stick) hoisted on a light halyard (flag halyard). Hoisting a pig stick is an art. When sailing on a beam reach, pull it up quickly on the leeward side, then pull down hard on the halyard to steady and straighten the stick. The halyard may be secured on the mast (at the risk of clanging against it), on a cleat on a shroud (which may foul jib sheets)—my preference is to make it fast to a toggle or turnbuckle at the bottom of a shroud.

We don't see masthead burgees much these days because flying them up there risks damaging some expensive equipment and destroying the flag with chafe. This is why many people opt to fly the burgee lower in the rig, hoisted to the end of the lowest starboard spreader on a flag halyard. While this practice is decried by purists, it is a reasonable adaptation of another tradition, which is that the starboard rigging is a position of honor (when we visit a foreign port, that's where we fly the host country's flag). Besides being reasonable, flying the burgee in the starboard rigging is so widespread a custom that to try to end it would be like attempting to hold back the tide. Opposing popular usage is rarely successful in any activity, and never in the field of communications, where relevance triumphs over tradition. In this case, the new tradition is more relevant than the old one, which was developed by sea captains and long-ago yachtsmen who never had to deal with VHF antennas.

There's a third possibility for the burgee that makes good sense. This is to fly it from a short flag staff (called a jack staff) on the center of the bow pulpit. There the flag is visible on both tacks (unlike the starboard rigging), and won't damage any equipment. A forward location for the burgee on a short staff is common in powerboats. Oddly, it's rarely seen on sailboats even though it's approved by the most stringent of all guides to flag etiquette, the Yacht Routine of the New York Yacht Club.”

The Royal Yachting Association

“Flag etiquette is a combination of law, good manners and tradition. Being ill-informed of your obligations could lead you to cause insult at home or abroad by giving a signal you do not intend to give, or could lead you to a fine for breaking the law.

It is now common practice to fly the burgee at the starboard spreaders, however, no other flag may be flown above the burgee on the same halyard. You also may not fly any other flag above a national courtesy flag on the same halyard. If you fly your burgee at the starboard spreaders and are sailing in the territorial waters of another country you have a dilemma, however you choose to solve this, unless you fly your burgee at the top of the mast you will be contravening one or another element of flag etiquette.

House flags are flown from the port spreaders. A house flag may indicate membership of an association (i.e. the RYA House Flag) or society or may be to indicate membership of another club, if the burgee of a more senior club is already being flown. More than one house flag may be flown on the port halyard, but with caution that they are flown in order of seniority.”

Register of Burgees Collected by SYC

Southern Yacht Club is proud to display the signals of established yacht clubs in recognition of our mutual friendship and common pursuits.  These burgees have been exchanged and collected by the membership during their travels and competitions, as well as, presented by sailors visiting our club.

Are the flags in any particular order?

Generally speaking, there is no particular order.  However, the inner row of flags hanging vertically are the Gulf Yachting Association member clubs and are hung in the order in which they joined the GYA.

Where is the Southern Yacht Club burgee?

Flying at the top of the mast on the North Lawn!  The burgees displayed in the bar serve as a sign of hospitality and respect for our fellow yachtsmen from across the country and around the world.  The SYC burgee may be displayed in the bar during certain events that celebrate the club, itself, such as the Annual Meeting or Commodore's Ball.

Can I add a burgee to the collection?

Absolutely!  All members are encouraged to bring an SYC burgee or two with them on their travels and to make an exchange with any yacht club they may visit.  Also, visitors to SYC may offer to make an exchange at the front desk.  Note that the prefered size for display is 12"x18".

Our Yacht club burgees are  made from MoD specification woven or knitted polyester fabrics. The design appears on both sides and reads correctly on the front and mirror image on the reverse. All flags come complete with rope and toggle unless otherwise directed.

Artwork requirements

We have many yacht and sailing club logos on our files, but most are in master copy form that we use for tracing purposes. These are specifically for the sewn burgees and club-defaced ensigns. For printed flags, we need your artwork in a vector file, AI, or high-resolution Jpeg. The Lloyds register clubs will be on our filing system, so you do not need to worry. However, if your design is not in the register we may not have access to your particular logo and information. If this is the case, then we would require you to provide your artwork in CMYK palette colours, print-ready.

Pleasantly surprised, service is good so is the food. Great selection of Fusion food, a mixture of Italian, Japanese, European, Asian etc. A pleasantly nice dining experience, highly recommended, a must try!

Food is very expensive,very pretentious, doesn't worth that money. Portions are very small. We ordered ravioli and there were 4! Four raviolis! For almost 15 euros. Then we asked to bring us dessert menu but nothing, they didn't even bothered, so we payed and left... without dessert. Very poor service for that price. More

Visited this lovely restaurant with a friend of mine. It was relaxingly warm August evening - so the place on the river seemed like a good idea. We came quite early and the restaurant was not full. The hostesses kindly offered several places to sit... and we chose to sit on the sofas. We had some wine, which was good. We struggled a bit when deciding about the food as few options (scallops) were not available. Fish on ice on display did not look very fresh. To be honest it was an unusually hot August and it is probably understandable that some see food options were not available. However, we did manage to order something and sat waiting and looking onto the river. My long-legged friend struggled sitting at the low sofa and the manager noticed that, offering as a very good, proper table beside the open window. It was nice touch and I was very pleased by their polite observations and immediate reaction to solve the problem. Food was quite good and presentation was perfect. Perhaps I can something about the food, but 1 visit is not enough to criticize or make a definitive opinion. Overall, quality place, which of course, does not come cheap. I would recommend this restaurant without hesitation. More

Central Station is another decent LGBTQIA club in the city. There are about two dance floors with very different kinds of vibes. You can call your entire gang to their karaoke club and have a gala time. During the summer, you can hang around on the terrace. Drag shows are a regular event at Central Station. The prices are reasonable, and the staff is extremely efficient at this place. 

Located in Pokrovsky Boulevard, Mono Bar is a famous hangout spot for people from the LGBTQIA community. The club was started in 2014 and, since then, has gained a lot of regular customers. Mostly you will be able to hear European as well as Russian music at this club. There is a balcony which is the smoking area. If you want to meet more people, it is ideal for visiting this place after midnight on Fridays and Saturdays. 

After-party clubs in Moscow

You have to ring the doorbell to get inside the club. The walls are made up of exposed concrete. The main venue downstairs is properly lit. Lime-stone staircase, wooden beams, and bar stools give the place a vintage vibe. The DJs mostly play Electronic music at this pub. This after-party venue makes you feel like you have been transported to Berlin. The interiors of this place have an industrial feel to them. During the day, this acts as a bike repair shop. But at night, you can party at Entuziast till late at night. Mostly the hipsters tend to party at this place. The bar is made up of metal, and you can see racing flags all over the place. Moscow nightlife is not for the faint of heart – and if you’re coming, you better be ready to go Friday and Saturday night into the early morning.

This comprehensive guide to Moscow nightlife will run you through the nuts and bolts of all you need to know about Moscow’s nightclubs and give you a solid blueprint to operate with during your time in Moscow.

What you need to know before hitting Moscow nightclubs

Prices in moscow nightlife.

Before you head out and start gaming all the sexy Moscow girls , we have to talk money first. Bring plenty because in Moscow you can never bring a big enough bankroll. Remember, you’re the man so making a fuzz of not paying a drink here or there will not go down well.

Luckily most Moscow clubs don’t do cover fees. Some electro clubs will charge 15-20$, depending on their lineup. There’s the odd club with a minimum spend of 20-30$, which you’ll drop on drinks easily. By and large, you can scope out the venues for free, which is a big plus.

Bottle service is a great deal in Moscow. At top-tier clubs, it starts at 1,000$. That’ll go a long way with premium vodka at 250$, especially if you have three or four guys chipping in. Not to mention that it’s a massive status boost for getting girls, especially at high-end clubs.

Without bottle service, you should estimate a budget of 100-150$ per night. That is if you drink a lot and hit the top clubs with the hottest girls. Scale down for less alcohol and more basic places.

Dress code & Face control

Door policy in Moscow is called “face control” and it’s always the guy behind the two gorillas that gives the green light if you’re in or out.

In Moscow nightlife there’s only one rule when it comes to dress codes:

You can never be underdressed.

People dress A LOT sharper than, say, in the US and that goes for both sexes. For high-end clubs, you definitely want to roll with a sharp blazer and a pocket square, not to mention dress shoes in tip-top condition. Those are the minimum requirements to level the playing field vis a vis with other sharply dressed guys that have a lot more money than you do. Unless you plan to hit explicit electro or underground clubs, which have their own dress code, you are always on the money with that style.

Getting in a Moscow club isn’t as hard as it seems: dress sharp, speak English at the door and look like you’re in the mood to spend all that money that you supposedly have (even if you don’t). That will open almost any door in Moscow’s nightlife for you.

Types of Moscow Nightclubs

In Moscow there are four types of clubs with the accompanying female clientele:

These are often crossovers between restaurants and clubs with lots of tables and very little space to dance. Heavy accent on bottle service most of the time but you can work the room from the bar as well. The hottest and most expensive girls in Moscow go there. Bring deep pockets and lots of self-confidence and you have a shot at swooping them.

Regular Mid-level clubs:

They probably resemble more what you’re used to in a nightclub: big dancefloors, stages and more space to roam around. Bottle service will make you stand out more but you can also do well without. You can find all types of girls but most will be in the 6-8 range. Your targets should always be the girls drinking and ideally in pairs. It’s impossible not to swoop if your game is at least half-decent.

Basic clubs/dive bars:

Usually spots with very cheap booze and lax face control. If you’re dressed too sharp and speak no Russian, you might attract the wrong type of attention so be vigilant. If you know the local scene you can swoop 6s and 7s almost at will. Usually students and girls from the suburbs.

Electro/underground clubs:

Home of the hipsters and creatives. Parties there don’t mean meeting girls and getting drunk but doing pills and spacing out to the music. Lots of attractive hipster girls if that is your niche. That is its own scene with a different dress code as well.

What time to go out in Moscow

Moscow nightlife starts late. Don’t show up at bars and preparty spots before 11pm because you’ll feel fairly alone. Peak time is between 1am and 3am. That is also the time of Moscow nightlife’s biggest nuisance: concerts by artists you won’t know and who only distract your girls from drinking and being gamed. From 4am to 6am the regular clubs are emptying out but plenty of people, women included, still hit up one of the many afterparty clubs. Those last till well past 10am.

As far as days go: Fridays and Saturdays are peak days. Thursday is an OK day, all other days are fairly weak and you have to know the right venues.

The Ultimate Moscow Nightclub List

Short disclaimer: I didn’t add basic and electro clubs since you’re coming for the girls, not for the music. This list will give you more options than you’ll be able to handle on a weekend.

Preparty – start here at 11PM

Classic restaurant club with lots of tables and a smallish bar and dancefloor. Come here between 11pm and 12am when the concert is over and they start with the actual party. Even early in the night tons of sexy women here, who lean slightly older (25 and up).

The second floor of the Ugolek restaurant is an extra bar with dim lights and house music tunes. Very small and cozy with a slight hipster vibe but generally draws plenty of attractive women too. A bit slower vibe than Valenok.

Very cool, spread-out venue that has a modern library theme. Not always full with people but when it is, it’s brimming with top-tier women. Slow vibe here and better for grabbing contacts and moving on.

High-end: err on the side of being too early rather than too late because of face control.

Secret Room

Probably the top venue at the moment in Moscow . Very small but wildly popular club, which is crammed with tables but always packed. They do parties on Thursdays and Sundays as well. This club has a hip-hop/high-end theme, meaning most girls are gold diggers, IG models, and tattooed hip hop chicks. Very unfavorable logistics because there is almost no room no move inside the club but the party vibe makes it worth it. Strict face control.

Close to Secret Room and with a much more favorable and spacious three-part layout. This place attracts very hot women but also lots of ball busters and fakes that will leave you blue-balled. Come early because after 4am it starts getting empty fast. Electronic music.

A slightly kitsch restaurant club that plays Russian pop and is full of gold diggers, semi-pros, and men from the Caucasus republics. Thursday is the strongest night but that dynamic might be changing since Secret Room opened its doors. You can swoop here but it will be a struggle.

Mid-level: your sweet spot in terms of ease and attractiveness of girls for an average budget.

Started going downwards in 2018 due to lax face control and this might get even worse with the World Cup. In terms of layout one of the best Moscow nightclubs because it’s very big and bottle service gives you a good edge here. Still attracts lots of cute girls with loose morals but plenty of provincial girls (and guys) as well. Swooping is fairly easy here.

I haven’t been at this place in over a year, ever since it started becoming ground zero for drunken teenagers. Similar clientele to Icon but less chic, younger and drunker. Decent mainstream music that attracts plenty of tourists. Girls are easy here as well.

Sort of a Coyote Ugly (the real one in Moscow sucks) with party music and lots of drunken people licking each others’ faces. Very entertaining with the right amount of alcohol and very easy to pull in there. Don’t think about staying sober in here, you’ll hate it.

Artel Bessonitsa/Shakti Terrace

Electronic music club that is sort of a high-end place with an underground clientele and located between the teenager clubs Icon and Gipsy. Very good music but a bit all over the place with their vibe and their branding. You can swoop almost any type of girl here from high-heeled beauty to coked-up hipsters, provided they’re not too sober.

Afterparty: if by 5AM  you haven’t pulled, it’s time to move here.

Best afterparty spot in terms of trying to get girls. Pretty much no one is sober in there and savage gorilla game goes a long way. Lots of very hot and slutty-looking girls but it can be hard to tell apart who is looking for dick and who is just on drugs but not interested. If by 9-10am you haven’t pulled, it is probably better to surrender.

The hipster alternative for afterparties, where even more drugs are in play. Plenty of attractive girls there but you have to know how to work this type of club. A nicer atmosphere and better music but if you’re desperate to pull, you’ll probably go to Miks.

Weekday jokers: if you’re on the hunt for some sexy Russian girls during the week, here are two tips to make your life easier.

Chesterfield

Ladies night on Wednesdays means this place gets pretty packed with smashed teenagers and 6s and 7s. Don’t pull out the three-piece suit in here because it’s a “simpler” crowd. Definitely your best shot on Wednesdays.

If you haven’t pulled at Chesterfield, you can throw a Hail Mary and hit up Garage’s Black Music Wednesdays. Fills up really late but there are some cute Black Music groupies in here. Very small club. Thursday through Saturday they do afterparties and you have an excellent shot and swooping girls that are probably high.

Shishas Sferum

This is pretty much your only shot on Mondays and Tuesdays because they offer free or almost free drinks for women. A fairly low-class club where you should watch your drinks. As always the case in Moscow, there will be cute girls here on any day of the week but it’s nowhere near as good as on the weekend.

In a nutshell, that is all you need to know about where to meet Moscow girls in nightlife. There are tons of options, and it all depends on what best fits your style, based on the type of girls that you’re looking for.
