First in the Heesen fleet to sport a tender bay that can be flooded to allow easy launching and recovery

After You was the largest and one of the most powerful Heesen yachts when she was delivered in 2011. Powered by a pair of 4,300kW, MTU 20V 4000 M93L diesel engines, After You will reach a notable top speed of 24 knots. In consultation with Van Oossanen Associates, Heesen’s in-house naval architects have created a sophisticated and highly efficient hard-chine hull, while Frank Laupman from Omega Architects drew the sleek and elegant exterior lines.

With her pelican beak bow and reverse sheer, ' After You ' clearly shows her Heesen pedigree. The owners, in collaboration with Dobroserdov Design, personally worked on the colour scheme, which features a combination of a custom metallic dark red Awlgrip paint that is combined with oyster white. The inspiration for the dark red tone is taken from Montemaggio Merlot and reflects another of the owner’s passions – fine Tuscan wines. The same colour scheme is repeated on the limousine tender, designed by Vripak and custom built in New Zealand by Vaudrey Miller.

The discreet luxury of After You’s interior was conceived by interior designer Ken Freivokh and further developed by Michela Reverberi, who was responsible for the detailing and interior decoration.

After You’s design offers some notably luxurious features, such as the largest owners’ stateroom seen on any of Heesen’s yachts, which has been a personal input of the owner. In size it is comparable to those found on yachts of over 80 metres, while she is also the first in the Heesen fleet to sport a tender bay that can be flooded to allow easy launching and recovery of the tenders, and a swimming pool on the main deck that is filled by a waterfall. The gym and spa facilities, including a steam room and a massage room, play a key role on the sun deck.

Guest Accommodation

Built in 2011, After You offers guest accommodation for up to 12 guests in 6 suites comprising a master suite, four double cabins and one twin cabin. There are 7 beds in total, including 1 king, 1 queen, 3 doubles and 2 singles. She is also capable of carrying up to 13 crew onboard to ensure a relaxed luxury yacht charter experience.

Powered by twin MTU engines, she comfortably cruises at 17 knots, reaches a maximum speed of 24 knots with a range of up to 4,500 nautical miles from her 125,000 litre fuel tanks at 12 knots. After You features at-anchor stabilizers providing exceptional comfort levels.

Boat Naming Etiquette: What You Need to Know

There’s something special about naming a boat. It’s not just a tradition. It is actually required by the U.S. Coast Guard to identify your boat’s name and hailing port both on documents and physically on the boat. While the rules aren’t as stringent for recreational boats, it’s still a fun idea. Giving your boat its unique moniker is important, but you’ll need to follow a few rules of boat naming etiquette to ensure a fitting name and good luck on the water.

Boat naming etiquette is essential. There are words you’ll need to avoid when naming your boat and a few best practices to follow. You’ll want your boat name to be short and sweet, with 33 characters maximum. You’ll also likely want a memorable name that reflects your interests or hobbies. The name should suit the vessel and roll off the tongue.

Do you have a new boat to name? Here’s some need-to-know information about boat naming etiquette to make sure your vessel has the perfect handle you’ll enjoy for years to come.

How Do You Name a Boat?

Naming your boat isn’t just a fun way to customize your vessel and make it your own. In fact, all commercial boats are required to have a name according to rules from the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG). Recreational boats don’t fall under the same guidelines, but naming your boat is a fun way to make the vessel uniquely yours.

There are a few things to keep in mind when considering how you name a boat. Some things to think about include:

  • The length of the boat name. It should be short and sweet, less than 33 characters.
  • Traditionally boats have female names. Consider naming your boat after a special woman.
  • Your boat name might reflect your career or a favorite hobby. We’ve suggested some boat names based on careers below.

It’s considered good luck and good boat naming etiquette to name your boat before its first launch. You’ll want to display your boat’s name on the hull in clear letters and numbers to make sure it’s visible to everyone. Bold lettering will ensure the name is visible even in rain or fog.

After you’ve settled on a name for your boat, you’ll want to make sure the new moniker is included on all documents related to your boat. This makes things official.

How Do You Christen a Boat?

How Do You Christen a Boat?

In addition to naming your boat on all official documents, you’ll want to christen your boat with its new name. A christening ceremony is a fun way to welcome your new boat, with its new name, into your family.

You can christen your boat with a small ceremony for friends and family. But first, champagne.

How to Hold a Boat Christening

There are 5 easy steps to holding a boat christening ceremony:

  • Gather friends and family around your new boat. Pour everyone (of age, of course) a glass of champagne or your favorite sparkling beverage. You’ll want to save the bottle for step 5.
  • Give a small speech about your boat.
  • Toast the boat! There are a few traditional poems to read to toast the boat or you can write your own toast to the boat and the seas.
  • Lay a branch of green leaves on the deck of the boat for good luck.
  • Break the champagne bottle, traditionally against the boat’s hull.

Christening a boat is an important celebration and essential to boat naming etiquette. But before you can hold a boat christening, you need to come up with the perfect name for your boat.

What Are Some Popular Boat Names?

Boat names can be as unique as the people who name them. A good boat name might reflect the owner’s interests or hobbies, or might be a classic name that just resonates. We’ve come up with a few suggested boat names you can use to get the creative juices flowing. Is it Bad Luck to Rename a Boat?

Do you count yourself among the superstitious set? If so, you might believe it is bad luck to rename a boat.

Sailors have many superstitions about luck at sea. According to old maritime legend, Poseidon or Neptune ( the gods of the sea ) know every boat by name. If you want to rename your boat, you need to have a purging ceremony to remove the existing name from their ledgers. If not, you might face consequences from Poseidon or Neptune. It is said that any items carried aboard a boat that has been renamed before the purging ceremony will be lost at sea.

What is a Purging Ceremony?

A purging ceremony is a kind of boat renaming ceremony. To have a purging or renaming ceremony, you’ll need to remove all traces of the boat’s name from the boat itself and all documents related to the boat.

Then you’ll need to speak to the gods of the sea themselves. You can find a few traditional statements to read online. Regardless, you’ll want to be gracious to the gods of the sea in your words. Additionally, don’t reveal the new name of the boat before the purging ceremony is over. This might bring 7 years of bad luck.

After the purging ceremony, you can hold the christening ceremony as described above to make the new name official.

Is it Bad Luck to Rename a Boat?

What Should You NOT Name a Boat?

Part of understanding boat naming etiquette is knowing what not to name your boat. There are three major “don’ts” that come with naming a boat.

Per information from the USCG, your boat’s name should contain no more than 33 characters. This might not seem like a lot, but you’d be surprised. You certainly have room to be creative within the required 33 characters!

Additionally, you need to play nice when naming your boat. You can’t use any swear words or otherwise profane language when naming your boat.  Along the same lines, you must not use any ethnic or racial slurs in naming your boat.

Finally, your boat name should not include any language that is used to seek help at sea. This could make things confusing when it comes to soliciting assistance in an emergency. Some of the common phrases and distress signals used by boaters who need help include.

Avoid the use of these terms and phrases, or anything that is phonetically similar, when naming your boat.

Following these guidelines and avoiding the pitfalls above can ensure your boat is named correctly and boat naming etiquette is followed.

How To Name A Boat: Inspiration, Dos, Don’ts, And More

Joe Appleton

A good boat requires a good name. A nameless boat is a sorry sight to behold—and there are more nameless boats out there than you’d think. It’s not hard to see why. Coming up with potential boat names is no easy task. There are certain conventions you might feel obliged to follow. Cool boat names seem to be required to have a bit of wit about them. Funny boat names often need to be built on top of a hilarious and subtle pun. And naturally, these names have to be unique boat names.

Boaty McBoatface

Well, that’s what people think anyway. The truth is that good boat names don’t have to be funny, witty, unique, or particularly clever. They just have to be special to you.

But that still requires some thought though.

Contrary to popular belief, you can take as long as you need to come up with a good name. Despite what tradition and superstition suggests, you can use your boat before going through the motions of a christening ceremony . A boat can remain nameless until the perfect name occurs to you. It’s not going to fall under some maritime curse, and you won’t anger the gods if you take it for a spin before you’ve given it a name.

Besides, even a brand new boat has probably been tested in the water before it was delivered, either by the manufacturer or by prospective buyers. If any sea god was to be offended, they didn’t do anything about it then, and if any curse was to fall on anyone, it would be on the person who did the quality assurance, and not you.

Granted, it takes some of the romance out of those old nautical christening traditions, but surely it’s better to christen you boat at a later date with a name that it truly deserves rather than rush into a christening with a poorly chosen moniker? Wouldn’t it be better to select a name that suits your boat’s character after you’ve had time to properly get to know each other? Taking your time makes a lot more sense, right?

Even if you decided to take your time, you might still require a little bit of inspiration. Here are a few important things to keep in mind as you start your search for the best boat names.

How To Choose A Boat Name

If you’re struggling to find a boat name that reflects your personality, try some of these approaches. It beats wading through pages and pages of boat puns that don’t fit the bill. Instead, take these ideas on board and come up with something special.

How To Name A Boat

#01. Keep it short

Good ship names are short and memorable. Ideally, you should aim for a name that’s a single word. You can go up to three if you think it needs it, but any more is overkill. Single words are best: they’re easy to remember, cheaper to print (if you’re paying for your boat decals per character!), and easy to understand. It’s important that they’re easy to understand, especially when you have to make your presence known over the radio waves .

#02. Aim close to home

By close to home, we mean think of your family. Popular boat names come directly from close bonds. The name of a person you love, or a beloved family pet, or the name of a place that holds some kind of significance in your heart. All of these can make unique boat names that mean something distinctly personal to you. Historically, naming your boat after someone special was a common theme. These days, you can riff off of that theme in a number of ways.

#03. Make it personal

Think about your profession, or a particular hobby that helps define you as a person, and see if you can come up with a name that symbolizes those things. A police officer’s boat could be called the Black Maria , while an attorney might get a thrill out of naming their boat Sea Trial , or Miss Demenour . In terms of hobbyists, a clarinet enthusiast might use a name lie Woodwind, or a gypsy jazz aficionado might like a name like Django .

#04. Use pop culture

Another way of coming up with good boat names is to mine your book, film, and music collection. If you have a favorite book, why not choose something straight from its pages? Don’t go for the obvious Moby Dick Pequod , but try branching out and finding something more subtle. Naturally, they don’t have to be nautical in nature, but a nautical sounding name is always a solid choice for a boat name.

#05. Use comedy

There’s no shortage of comedy out on the water. Some boat names are hilarious puns, or rely on a bit of double entendre to create a memorable name. Cirrhosis of the River , Nauti-Buoy , Master Baiter, and similar sounding names are always good value. If you’re looking for good fishing boat names, do a Google search for British fish and chip shops. Those guys know how to come up with a fishing-related name or two. The Codfather , Oh My Cod , Fishcotheque …Sure, they’re oddly specific, but they’re also pretty funny.

#06. Use a name generator

If you’re really stuck for inspiration, you can always try using a name generator. These generators use random selection to come up with apt and interesting names. Since choosing a boat name seems to be a regular problem for boaters, we’ve put together our own boat name generator to help you out.

#07. Try something traditional

If in doubt, you can always play it safe by going for something traditional. You can’t go wrong with something from the classics, or something from ancient mythology. Elemental gods are great choices, and you could use Poseidon after the God of the Sea, or Boreas, Notus, Eurus, or Zephyr, after the gods of the North, South, East, and West Winds respectively. You can’t go wrong with something classic, so if you run out of ideas, go with something like this.

In Summary: The Truth About Boat Names

There’s no shortage of advice about finding the perfect boat name, and there’s no shortage of superstition out there too. Some will tell you that you can’t name it this, or you can’t call it that, and that you shouldn’t sail before you’ve put a name on it. At the end of the day, superstition is superstition. Don’t let a bit of superstition get in the way of you doing things your way.

Choose a name that you like, when you’re good and ready, and display it proudly on your transom. As long as it isn’t offensive and you can say it clearly in an emergency, then name it whatever you want.

We put together this helpful guide on how to name a boat to take the stress and hassle out of the task.

Why Do We Name Boats?

Most of us don’t name our cars like the “General Lee” from the “Dukes of Hazard” or “Kit” from “Knight Rider.” However, naming a boat is essential. It’s a part of maritime tradition and a blessing of good luck for the vessel and its voyages.

The culture of naming boats started more than a thousand years ago. Captains would name their vessels after gods as a sign of tribute and respect, asking the deity to watch over the boat and its crew while at sea.

Some sailors believed the choice of name for the vessel could mean the difference between a successful journey and being lost at sea. Christening a boat has always included a ceremony involving the use of wine or champagne or some form of elite beverage that’s hard to procure.

The custom started with boat owners pouring the wine over the boat as an offering to the gods. The ceremony would occur under the full moon’s light at high tide. Gradually, the culture evolved to include breaking bottles of champagne on the boat’s bow as a symbol of success and good luck when christening modern boats.

Why Do We Name Boats?

Should You Rename a Boat?

After you settle on a name for your boat, you’re kind of stuck with it for good. One of the deepest superstitions in the boating world revolves around renaming boats and the misfortune it brings to the crew and captain during journeys.

The myth of renaming boats and receiving bad luck extends back to the early days of sailing. When captains would rename boats, it was a shun to the deity or god they previously named the vessel after, defying their influence in the crew and captains’ safety at sea.

The original myth states that “the Ledger of the Deep” records the name of every sea-faring vessel taking to the ocean. The Ledger of the Deep is the god Poseidon’s personal record book. A captain would have to purge the vessel’s original name from the ledger to avoid bad luck bestowed upon himself and his crew. The captain would have to rid the world of every mention of the boat’s name to stay on the good side of the Greek god.

Most captains would burn the old name board of the boat and cast the ashes to the sea. After destroying all the parts of the ship bearing the vessel’s original name, you’ll have to conduct another christening ceremony using a special spell that we can’t repeat here.

Completing the ceremony is absolutely essential before heading out to sea, or captains run the risk of encountering the wrath of Poseidon.

Boat Naming Superstitions

The boating community also has several superstitions for christening and naming boats. Most of them involve no-go names that might bring you bad luck.

For example, naming the vessel after a hurricane or big storm at sea isn’t a good idea. Also, naming it after sunken vessels is a bad move, so forget about calling it the next “Titanic.”

Tradition also shows that it’s unlucky to name a boat with a name starting with the letter “O” or “A.” It’s also important to never perform a christening ceremony on a Friday.

Why Do Sailors Call Boats “She?”

One of the interesting phenomena around naming boats is that most owners choose to give them female names. Most people will also refer to vessels using the pronoun “she.” So, why do we link boats to the female gender?

The reality is that no one really knows why people started referring to ships and boats in the female form. One of the most reasonable answers for the practice comes from the early tradition of christening boats over a millennia ago.

Most captains would christen their boat with a goddess’ name. The tradition stuck, and that’s the most likely reason why we refer to boats and yachts as “she,” and it’s also why some motorists use it for their cars as well.

Top Tips for Naming a Boat

We recommend keeping the name of your boat short and sweet. There’s no need to use a string of words like “Gods Brilliant and Beautiful Sunrise” for your boat. “Gods Sunrise” would be a better choice. Stick to one or two words and seven to ten letters for the name.

The name needs to be short enough to fit on transoms and easy for the coast guard and others vessels to understand during emergency radio communications. Regardless of the marine superstitions involved with naming your boat, you want to choose something timeless that you won’t need to change later.

So, naming the boat after your wife is a bad idea since if you end up getting divorced, you’re likely going to want to change the boat’s name.

Most boat owners will name the vessel after a hobby or interest they have in their life that they are passionate about. For instance, if you’re a doctor, you could name the boat something like “Prescription,” “Doctor’s Order’s,” or “Checkup.”

Choosing a name with a double meaning or a pun is also a popular choice. For example, if you’re a legal professional, you could name the boat “Winning,” “Knot Guilty,” or “The Verdict.” The name should match the owner’s identity and the boat itself.

A good name blends the owner’s personality with how they managed to procure the boat in their life. For example, if you’re a firefighter naming a cruiser, you could call the vessel the “Hook and Hose.” However, if you’re looking for a name that would suit a high-performance boat, “Backdraft” or “Inferno” might be a better choice.

It’s also common for people to name boats after their favorite movie or song. However, we recommend keeping the name to a nautical reference if you go this route. Calling your boat “The Black Pearl” after the legendary vessel from the “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise would be a good example.

Here are the key takeaways you need to know about naming your boat.

  • Choose a name that’s one to three words long.
  • The name should fit on the transom.
  • The name needs to be easy to read and repeat in emergency communications.
  • Don’t name the boat after emergency situations, such as “man overboard.”
  • Keep it classy and avoid racists and sexist names.
  • Remember, you’re going to have to say the name over the radio to strangers at some time, so don’t name the boat anything that’s embarrassing to repeat over an open channel.

Settling On the Right Name for Your Boat

It will take some time to settle on the right name for your boat. To boat owners, the practice of naming their boat is nearly as important as naming a child. Like your kids, you can’t just rename the boat a few months later to something else. Poseidon wouldn’t agree.

We recommend you write down a list of your top five to ten names and keep them on your phone for a week or so. Stare at the list every time you have a spare moment, and some of the names will begin to; look more attractive than others.

Ask your friends and family members for suggestions based on your ideas. Toss around your list of names with colleagues at work and keep the names in the back of your mind at all times.

The more feedback you get, the easier the selection process gets. By the end of the second week, you’ll have your boat’s new name ready for the christening ceremony.

Christening a Boat with its New Name

Cultures around the world have differences in how they christen boats. The Vikings are the first culture to christen ships.

However, they didn’t do it by cracking a bottle of champagne. Instead, they would make a human sacrifice to the gods as a way to bless the crew.

Middle-age European traditions involved sprinkling holy water over the boat.

The British Navy started the popular culture of smashing a bottle of high-quality champagne on the boat’s bow. This practice is no longer honored due to the environmental waste caused by the broken bottle in the Marina.

Some of the common modern christening ceremonies are the following.

  • Gather your friends and family to launch your boat for the first time.
  • Pass around a glass of champagne to everyone for a celebratory drink.
  • Place a large green leaf, like a palm, on the bow to symbolize the safe return to the land from your voyages.
  • Name the boat with a toast and pour a glass of champagne out over the bow.

Have fun Christening Your Boat

Take Your Family or Friends Out for a Ride

After naming the boat, it’s time to take everyone out on the lake, river, or ocean for a spin. Remember to take it easy on your christening drive.

The last thing you need is to go too fast and end up in an accident on your first time on the boat – that would be severe bad luck for future journeys. Play it safe and take a slow christening drive – resist the urge to open the throttle on your maiden voyage.

If you decide to go against the norm and smash a bottle of bubbly on the bow, remember this; The bottle is likely more durable than you think.

You might end up swinging it, only to find the bottle doesn’t break. However, the impact may cause damage to the hull and the paintwork, cracking the gel coating, ruining the finish of the vessel. Targeting a stainless steel cleat is a better choice than the fiberglass hull.

If you want to save the environment, we recommend placing the bottle inside a carrier bag as you swing it. This strategy collects the glass from the break instead of going into the marina where it might cut people’s feet.

What’s in a name? The stories behind some of the top superyacht names

Once a superstitious practice, christening a superyacht has now become an eccentric form of self-expression – owners name their yachts after favourite songs, private islands and, in one case, a beloved circus elephant. Diving into the world of superyacht nomenclature, BOAT International discovers the unexpected stories behind some well-known yacht names...

The Wellesley

Builder : Oceanco Length : 56.2m Year : 1993

For hotelier Khalid Affara, superyachts are about the business of hospitality – that's how The Wellesley was born, as a nautical extension of his renowned art-deco hotel, The Wellesley in London. This charter favourite has the same resplendent interiors as her Knightsbridge namesake, from the 1920s-style guest cabins to the Arabescèto Corchia marble and Hermès amenities in the bathrooms. “When we thought about going for a superyacht we considered it a two-way street, it is branding,” Affara explained to BOAT International . “Putting The Wellesley’s name on a big boat and sending it around all the big ports means people see it and start to make the connection. It is like a big advertising sign.”

Builder : JFA Yachts Length : 33.5m Year : 2012

Rodents (or Agatha Christie) might spring to mind when you hear the name Mousetrap , but this cat amaran was actually christened in honour of the owner's electronics empire. Daniel Borel is the chairman emeritus of Logitech, the minds behind the first cordless, infrared mouse and, later, the first thumb-operated trackball and laser mouse. As the world's largest carbon-fibre cruising catamaran, a company of firsts is a fitting namesake – Mousetrap is also fitted with innovative, load sensor technology and PLC Force Feedback steering.

Builder : Moonen Yachts Length : 25.7m Year : 1991

This canoe-sterned Moonen (once known as Marlee Queen ) was sold to Prince Bernhard of the Netherlands and renamed Jumbo IV . As the name suggests, the prince's previous yachts were also called Jumbo after his particular love of elephants – Jumbo was the London Zoo's first African elephant and, later, was controversially sold to P.T Barnum's circus. The co-founder and first president of the World Wildlife Fund, Jumbo IV was also an ode to Prince Bernhard's passion for nature conservation. The yacht was often sighted in Porto Ercole, Tuscany, where the Dutch royal family would spend their summers.

Builder : Piriou Length : 76.6m Year : 2015

Attended by HSH Prince Albert II and blessed by the Vicar General of Monaco, the prestige of Yersin 's naming ceremony befits the man who inspired it. This military-style explorer was named after Doctor Alexandre Yersin, the bacteriologist who voyaged through Southeast Asia carrying out life-saving research on the bubonic plague (the bacterium Yersinia pestis is another of his namesakes). Designed by Pierre-Jacques Kubis in that same spirit of scientific discovery, Yersin is equipped with a barge, seaplane and enough provisions to keep 18 people fed for 50 days. She's also ice-classed and Polar-code compliant, with her 2,198GT used to house researchers, scientists and students, to the end of educating and progressing global conservation efforts.

Come Together

Builder : Amels Length : 60m Year : 2022

Coined after a Beatles song, it's only right that Come Together 's owner would choose a British studio to fine-tune this yacht's interiors. Winch Design had a clear vision of what the owner wanted, having previously collaborated on the 83-metre Here Comes the Sun (yes, another Beatles track) – the result is a warm, communal design that takes the ethos of the yacht's name to heart. Stepping inside Come Together reveals plush sofa lounges for spontaneous gatherings, a bespoke games table created by Hull Studio and a main saloon dining table that can be extended to squeeze in an extra friend or two. There's also a guitar in the skylounge, in a more literal nod to the yacht's catchy name.

Builder : Hakvoort Length : 63.7m Year : 2019

The largest yacht (by length and volume) delivered by the 100-year-old shipyard, Scout ' s utilitarian profile and martial paint job have left many misunderstanding her namesake. She's not named after a soldier, or even an explorer, but owner James Berwind's rescue dog. "We want to enjoy the sea and the fresh air and travel with our dogs. We live casually outdoors so a yacht suits us; it’s a vehicle to take us places," explained Berwind, who spends seven months a year travelling the Caribbean, the British Isles, the fjords of Scandinavia and Hawaii with his partner and pups Scout and Brio. Dog-friendly design is prevalent throughout, including enclosed bulwarks, carpeted stair treads and a master suite fitted with a private terrace "puppy park".

Necker Belle

Builder : CMN Shipyard Length : 32m Year : 2003 Formerly owned by Richard Branson, Necker Belle  was named after the magnate's tropical hideaway, Necker Island. This private, previously uninhabited islet is found in the British Virgin Islands, with all 30 hectares belonging to Virgin's portfolio of luxury properties. While Necker Island can still be exclusively rented, this bright-white catamaran is no longer part of the deal after she was sold to an undisclosed buyer in August 2018. Necker Belle 's stand-out features include a sea trampoline and the "Necker Nymph", a three-person aero submarine capable of diving up to 30 metres.

Builder : Feadship Length : 101.5m Year : 2015

The first Feadship to cross 100 metres, Symphony was commissioned by CEO and founder of Louis Vuitton, Bernard Arnault. Allegedly, Arnault's passion for classical music dictates whether or not he'll stay overnight in a hotel suite (the rule is that the hotel must have a grand piano). He's also married to award-winning pianist Hélène Mercier. Formerly known as Project 808, Symphony 's sculptural, harmonious lines are courtesy of Tim Heywood . The six-deck yacht also has a medley of amenities – to note a few, there's a private owner's deck with a sauna and terrace Jacuzzi, a six-metre, glass-bottom pool, an outdoor cinema and (of course) a grand piano.

How to Name a Boat

Buying a boat is exciting for myriad reasons. You can almost imagine the sun on your face and the wind in your hair. Choosing a name for your boat can be an intriguing prospect, but finding one that stands out can be challenging with so many clever boat names out there. Once you’ve purchased a new boat, naming her is the final step to making her uniquely yours.

With some simple ideas, you can learn how to name your boat, choosing a name that reflects who you are and makes people smile.

Why Do We Name Boats?

Naming your boat is a rite of passage for many boat owners. Although  identification is a primary reason  we name boats today, naming a boat has more significance than that. Great boat names tell people something about your passions, character and experiences.

People name boats for sentimental, traditional and personal reasons. It can also help with simple communication, making it easy for people to find you and communicate over the radio. Whatever your reasons for naming your boat, it’s a tradition few boating enthusiasts can live without. In fact, it’s challenging to find a boat without a name.

Boat Naming Traditions and Superstitions

Sailors have had names for boats for thousands of years. They started  naming their boats out of superstition , hoping the deities and saints that served as namesakes would provide safe passage and good fortune on their travels. Traditionally,  boats were named after women , and the naming ceremony took place before a ship’s inaugural launch.

While there’s more freedom nowadays in what you can name your boat, many avid sailors still conduct a naming ceremony in keeping with age-old customs. There are also superstitions that many present-day boaters abide by, including staying away from unlucky names in case they bring bad fortune. Whether you’re superstitious or not, it might be best not to tempt fate and stay away from naming your boat after a vessel that met misfortune, like the Titanic.

Tips and Tricks for Naming a Boat

Knowing where to start is helpful if you’re looking for boat names. With the following tips and tricks, choosing the perfect name for your boat could be easier than you think:

  • Start short and sweet:  Think pithy and memorable so it’s easy for friends and family to understand and fits on the transom. People should be able to recognize the name over VHF radio.
  • Be unique:  If you do it right, you’ll only name your boat once, so use your imagination and try to come up with something no one else has thought of before. The last thing you want is to sail into a marina and see another boat with the same name as yours.
  • Keep it family-friendly:  Keep your boat name clean and classy, whether considering family boat names or going for a more mature feel.
  • Play on words:  Puns and cliches are a great way to give your boat some personality and earn originality points among your fellow boaters.
  • Make it about you:  Your boat name should reflect your personality, passions or hobbies. For example, ‘Alibi’ could be a fun way to add character to your boat if you’re a lawyer.
  • Consider the location:  Having a great boat name is one thing, but you must also consider where to put it. Think about colors and fonts that match your boat, and have a clear vision of the finished product. You can hire professionals to complete the layout or complete the project yourself.
  • Think about tradition:  Although no rule states you should stick with tradition, you could use it as inspiration. Sailors used to name boats after women they loved. You could consider a loved one’s name if it resonates with you.
  • Remember the boat:  Boat names should reflect your personality but should also work with the boat. Consider the type of boat you have in mind and try and use it to inspire the name.
  • Have a theme:  A nautical theme is an obvious and fitting choice, especially if you want to name your boat after songs, movies or artworks.
  • Entertain:  If people smile when they hear your boat name on the radio or catch sight of your transom, you’ve brought some fun and positivity to fellow boaters.

Choosing a Name for Your Boat

Choosing a Name for Your Boat

With the above tips and tricks to guide you, you can start narrowing down potential names for your boat. Remember, your boat name embodies you, your personality, your sense of humor and your love for being out on the water. Take your time coming up with the perfect name. Some boaters believe in various superstitions about renaming a boat, like the need to perform a renaming ceremony to avoid bad luck. Choosing the right name the first time is more than convenient.

Consider the following questions to help you get even closer to a great boat name:

  • How big is your boat or yacht?
  • What  type of boat do you own ? While most leisure boats don’t use prefixes, adding one could be fun and meaningful. Prefixes illustrate your propulsion system — SS stands for steamship, for example — so make sure you use the right one if you use it at all.
  • How would you describe your boat’s personality? You may have noticed she has some quirks already.
  • What emotional response do you want from your boat name? Do you want people to laugh? Would you like to convey romance? Maybe you’re looking for a name with an adventurous overtone.
  • What are some of your favorite things? Do you have a favorite movie, song or animal?
  • Can you tie your boat name to your hobbies or profession?

Write some of your top choices down or say them aloud. Do you get a good feeling about one of the names? There’s a good chance you’ve found a name for your boat.

How to Create a Memorable Boat Naming Ceremony

Boat naming ceremonies are optional but  date back to ancient Greek times  and traditionally evoke protection for sailors. Present-day boat naming ceremonies are more of a celebration. Organizing a get-together is an excellent way to honor old maritime traditions and celebrate your new boat.

You’ll need some friends and family, a bottle of something, like Champagne, to break on your boat and a branch of greens to represent your safe return to shore. Keep your wine in a bag to prevent the glass from littering the deck. Prepare the boat for a short maiden voyage at the end of the ceremony.

When your friends and family are gathered, read a short poem and say some words about the boast. Make a toast to many safe and happy voyages and break the bottle of wine over the bow. Invite your guests aboard and set out on your new adventure.

6 Tips for Naming Your Boat

1. keep your boat name brief .

While it's tempting to craft elaborate and descriptive names, keeping them concise and to the point is essential. A short name not only looks sleek on the transom but also ensures clarity and ease during VHF radio communications . Imagine trying to convey a long and convoluted name amidst crackling radio static – simplicity ensures your message gets across swiftly and clearly. So, when brainstorming boat names, aim for brevity without sacrificing personality or impact.

2. Consider Incorporating a Familiar Name

Incorporating your family's name or that of a loved one into your boat's name adds a personal touch to your vessel's identity.  Not only does it honor the bond shared with those closest to you, but it also symbolizes the unity and camaraderie experienced aboard your maritime adventures. Whether it's a nod to generations past or a tribute to those who've shared countless memories on the water, including a family member's name infuses your boat with a sense of history, legacy, and emotional connection that enriches every voyage.

3. Incorporate Your Profession or Another Hobby

Infusing your boat's name with elements of your profession or hobbies adds another layer of significance and personality. It's not uncommon to come across clever and thematic names like "Knot on Call" for a physician's vessel or "Doctor's Orders" for a boat owned by medical professionals. Incorporating your profession or hobby into the name not only reflects your expertise or interests but also serves as a conversation starter among fellow enthusiasts on the water.

4. Add a Witty Pun

When naming your boat, puns and double meanings reign supreme, injecting a dose of wit and humor into your vessel's identity.  Building upon the previous point, it's no surprise that attorneys often embrace wordplay to incorporate their profession into their boat's name. Names like "Alibi," "Plead Insanity," or "Knot Guilty" not only showcase their legal expertise but also highlight their playful side.  Embracing puns and wordplay allows you to infuse your boat's name with personality and charm, ensuring that it stands out on the water!

5. Pay Homage to Your Favorite Song, Movie, or Other Art You Love

Drawing inspiration from your favorite songs, movies , or other cultural works can yield some captivating boat names! Whether it's a homage to Jimmy Buffett's laid-back anthem with "Margaritaville" or a nod to the legendary ship from "Pirates of the Caribbean" with "The Black Pearl," infusing your boat's name with elements from beloved art adds a touch of flair and nostalgia to your maritime adventures.

6. When in Doubt, Make it Entertaining

Boating is not just about navigating the waters; it's about fostering a sense of community and shared joy. If a glance at your transom makes people laugh, you've just helped to make the boating world a better place.

Deciding How to Name Your New Boat

Consider the above as you decide what to name your boat, but also take your time! Many people feel pressured to come up with a name the day they buy their new boat when, in truth, it may take you a few months to determine the perfect name for your boat.

Some owners find that the perfect name emerges organically as they spend time on the water, getting to know the personality of their vessel. Others find inspiration in literature, mythology, or personal experiences. Don't rush the process; allow the name to reveal itself naturally, and when it does, you'll know it's the right fit.

How to Christen a Boat with its Name

Christening a boat is open to interpretation! However, most boat christening ceremonies consist of steps such as:

  • Gather some friends and family, then launch the boat and tie it to a pier or dock.
  • Pass around a celebratory drink: think champagne (for passengers over the age of 21) and mocktails (for the captain).
  • Place a green, leafy branch (of any sort) in the boat to represent a safe return to land.
  • Name the boat and make a toast to the adventures ahead.
  • Go for a boat ride!

In conclusion, naming your boat is not just a formality but an opportunity to infuse your vessel with personality, meaning, and a touch of your own unique flair. Whether you draw inspiration from family ties, professions, hobbies, favorite songs or movies, or simply opt for a clever pun, the key is to choose a name that resonates with you and captures the essence of your maritime adventures.

A Boat Named

Do you stay traditional and name your boat after a sweetheart? If you've been jilted, do you name your boat something bitter as a form of catharsis? If you're not interested in naming your boat after a dame, your boat's name could represent a struggle you've overcome, a quest you're beginning, or something as simple as the cocktail you plan on sipping while at the helm.  Learn how to name your boat and see some of the country's best boat names.

boaty-mcboatface-boat-naming

Jokers beware: as the  British NERC researchers  can tell you, the name of your boat says a lot about you, and leaves a lasting impression.

To take a page out of the Halcyon Passages boating blog:

You can name your boat anything you want to and my opinion is just that. And that opinion is that a name should be one word sometimes two, but one if you can do it. Under no circumstances should it be a whole sentence. ...I miss the days of boats with real names like, Victory, Ranger, Dauntless, and Endeavor.  When I send a distress call announcing that the vessel, that I have treated with such pride and respect, is taking me straight to the bottom, the Coast Guard undoubtedly will say, “Holy cow, now that’s a great boat name.”

How to Choose A Boat Name

1. check how common it is.

Before choosing a name, please give it a run through one of the boat name databases available online, and check out the annual BoatUS Top 10 Boat Names List . If you choose a popular name, and in particular a name that is popular in your boating region, there's a good chance you'll eventually cross paths with your name-doppelgänger and cause some confusion over the radio waves.

2. Check for adaptability

Imagine the scenarios in which you'll say or hear your boat's name. Envision yourself needing to call your boat name over a VHF, as you'll likely need to do many times before you and your boat part ways. As per PropTalk's recommendation, "Imagine yourself using this new name three times on Channel 16. Consider how easy it is to say and how easy it is for other boats to understand." What will it look like if your boat makes front-page headlines?

If you're a sailor, imagine winning a regatta. Do you want to hear "Congratulations,  B-Yacht'ch !" when you approach the podium? (...Maybe! It actually has a fun ring to it.) Once you've chosen a name, head to the  United States Coast Guard site  to make it official.

Boat Name Superstitions

Once named, superstition dictates that it's bad luck to change the name of a boat. But if you must, check out this blog to see the tradition that follows (as with most things in boating), which can clear your boat of bad juju.  One boat renaming ceremony we found: place a piece of paper with the boat name on it in a small box, burn the box, then release the ashes into the sea or river. If you're not one for superstition, you're not alone – mainly as this one may have come about to dodge the attention of tax agencies when a large ship changed hands.

Popular Boat Name Categories

Don't call it a comeback! By far the easiest way to name a boat: ditch its predecessor. Whether your last vessel had a run-in with the sea floor or you wanted an upgrade, calling your second, third, and fourth boat after the first is a breeze. You don't even have to change the artwork on the boat decal. If you're attached to a boat name, there's no shame in wanting to keep it. Rendezvous II, Abigail Rose II, Act III, Adventure Us IIII – all names worthy of a second life.

Our favorite Repeat boat name in this category in 2016:  Nailed It Again

The 2017 Dockwa team favorites:  Double Down II ,  Karma II ,  Ship of Fools III

The Workaholic

Whether you're obsessed with your job, want to reference how much you hate it, or see boating as a business networking opportunity, naming your boat something related to your occupation opens up a world of boat name puns to help break the ice when you're out on the water.

The Love Boat

Naming a boat after the love of your life doesn't just score brownie points; it carries on an age-old tradition of naming ships after wives.

Our pals at GetMyBoat did the research on this one:

There are several theories about how this came to be. One is that since the word for “ship” in the languages of the Mediterranean was feminine, the gender of the ship remained the same even in languages in which the word for ship or boat was male or gender-neutral. Another theory is that since boats were traditionally given female names, they became associated with women. In addition, working boats and ships were historically manned by all-male crews. Some ships, like whaling ships, would be at sea for years at a time, and would have a closer relationship with the boat than the mothers, wives, or sweethearts they left behind on shore. Legend has it that ships would sometimes behave like women too, with their own personalities and the specific ways they liked to be handled.

In the Dockwa boat list we found a few  Carol Annes , a handful of  Jenny s, a  Jeaninne III  and a slew of boats named after their missus's -  Miss Molly, Miss Megan, Miss Maggie , the list goes on.

Our favorite Dockwa boat name in 2016:  Captain's Lady . Gotta give the captain credit for the built-in flexibility.

Our 2017 pick:  Sweet Caroline . Even if you're not a Boston fan, we love a boat name that gets the harbor humming.

2018: Lost Keys

2019: Mr. T and Me

2020: Platinum Dream

2021: P aumanok and Booger

The Weatherbird

The Eskimo language may have more than 100 words for "snow," but we'd be willing to bet that the number of terms for wind puts that to shame. As well there should be – every day on the breeze is different. So if a particular day or type of wind strikes your fancy, or stays with you for reasons you can't quite describe, perhaps you're a Weatherbird.

Our favorite wind-related Dockwa boat names in 2016:  Second Wind , and  Wind Chaser

The 2017 favorite:  Bris de Mer , which a boater relayed to us translates into French for "Breaking of Sea" – Sea Breaker. Lovely!

2018:  Stella Maris

2019: Sowwanin II

2020: Irish Hurricane

2021: Witch of November

The Competitor You know them when you see them. When you read the name on the scratch sheet, these are the boats that give you a chill. You don't just want it to win. You want it to crush every other boat in the regatta. Comanche, Dark Star, and SPOOKIE are some of our favorites to see on the start lines. Favorite competitive boat names of 2016:  Triumph  and  STOLEN Our fastest pick for 2017:  Flight Risk 2018:  Bird of Prey 2019: None this year, but to make up for it we added a "Boater's Best Friend" category. This year's winner was Bosun:  We named our boat as well as our dog Bosun. Both are well trusted, dependable, and reliable. The definition of “bosun” suits both the dog as well as our boat well: "a ship's officer in charge of equipment and the crew." – Chris W., Rowayton, CT.  Check out this new category! 2020:  Lady Minx 2021: Miss Mayhem Goddess, Spirits, and Legends Boating can teach you several things: resourcefulness, independence, geography, cooking, and, of course, a wealth of information about obscure Germanic/Greek/Norse deities, fantastic legends, and eerie seafaring stories. Looking to tales is an excellent way to find a name for your boat that is unique and classic. A few of our favorites:  Calliope , the Greek muse often associated with eloquence and epic poetry,  Valkyrie , the Norse figures who choose those who may die in battle and those who may live, and  Freyja , a Norse goddess associated with love, sex, beauty, fertility , and gold. Our favorite goddess-themed boat name of 2016:  Hespera , the Greek spirit of immortality. 2017's pick: We like the sound of  Pyewacket , which was one of the spirits in the story of the witches of Essex, England, in 1644, described as both an imp and a polecat by the "witch" who claimed they visited her. If not that origin story, the boat could be named for the 1967 children's novel of the same name, in which the main character is an alley cat.  2018:  Dea Latis  2019:  Alobar 2020: Vayu 2021: PINCOYA The Heartstrings Whether you had your heart broken or lost your fortune in a drunken night of gambling–or both–naming a boat after your tale of woe can be cathartic. For instance, we can't imagine a vessel named After Child Support  had happy beginnings. The boat name that most stood out in the Dockwa roster:  Life's a Wreck . Hope everything's okay, buddy! 2017's, er, winners:  Bittersweet  and  Grumpy Old Man .  2018: Solace , No Regrets , Fighting Lady , and T n T Too  2019:  Knot A Day Goes By  2020: Burnt Out 2021: Peregrine The Musician Three Little Birds, Comfortably Numb, Aleggro, Adagio, Calypso, Cantada  –captains love music! From classical to contemporary, naming your boat after your favorite tune can give you a theme song to blast as you leave the harbor (we're looking at you,  Wild T'ing ), or a go-to to crank up once you've reached calm waters and are sipping on wine. Our favorite musically-themed boat name of 2016:  White Album , who apparently chose the name to avoid having to put the name on the hull.  Our 2017 pick:  The Madman Across the Water . Kudos to this captain for being boating-apropos while showing us there's more to  the Elton John album  than Tiny Dancer. We also love  Hotel California  – if we see that boat we'd expect the crew aboard to be living it up while living aboard.  2018:  Three Little Birds 2019:  Row Jimmy 2020: Bellini 2021: Alestorm The Fun-Lovin' Free-Wheeler! Boat Drinks! Comfortably Numb! Yolo!  You'll get no judgment from us. People buy boats for different reasons, and if yours is to have a boozy getaway on the water, so be it! But, be careful with this naming category. If the name is too on the nose, "Getting Slizzard" anyone?, don't be surprised when Coasties show up to survey the scene. Our favorite fun-lovin' boat name of 2016:  Zimbabalooba! Sounds like a wacky good time.  For 2017, we have a soft spot for  Dune Buggy . We imagine this is a sporty little runabout!  2018: Mad Cap 2019:  Too Much Weekend 2020: Weekend Bender 2021: Bad Idea The Pop Culture Fan From the The S.S. Minnow to Cast Away to the Pirate Ship Revenge , harbors always seem to have their fair share of pop culture references.  Our favorite pop-culture boat name of 2016:  Honey Badger . We assume this boat's namesake is the  2011 nature video  that went viral after some creative narrating, which would lead us to also assume that the owners of this boat don't care and have a pretty fun sense of humor.  2017's winner:  Kobayashi Maru  hands down. The name is apropos for referencing the captain's test in J.J. Abrams' 2009 Star Trek reboot, and has an even sweeter connotation for Trek fans who know that this test is designed to be unbeatable, to see how a captain reacts in a no-win scenario. (Spoiler alert) Even better: the test is beaten by a captain who doesn't believe in no-win scenarios. Live long and prosper.  2018:  Squalus  2019:  Shortshank Redemption  2020: McHale’s Navy 2021: Millenium Dolphin The Pun Master Some people love a good pun–enough to slap one on the stern of a boat that will likely be one of the most significant investments they make in their life. Pun names are harmless, even if they are groan-worthy, to name a few:  ABSeas, Comocean, YEAH BOUY, Knot So Fast, Nauti Girl, Ships n' Giggles, Fanta-Sea,  and  Extra-Sea . Catamaran owners seem particularly guilty of indulging in puns, with names like  Cat-astrophe, KatAttack, Katnip, and  Katatonic . And then there are the puns that get a bit more risque–the afore-mentioned  B-Yacht'ch ,  Morning Wood , and  Master Baiter (Do you bring your mothers on that boat?). We'll keep things a little more G-Rated for our boat name pick.

Our favorite punny boat name of 2016:  Seas the Dream .

2017's punmaster: Whichever pirate owns  Arrr-n-Arrrr .

2018:  Jaunty

2019:  Ship Show

2020: DEBAITABLE

2021: Pied à mer

The Storyteller When perusing the long list of Dockwa boaters, many don't fit into one of the previous categories, and some in particular give pause. Twenty Two Bucks ? What's the story there? Witch of Tilloo ? Definitely needed to google that. Did the owner of Triple Dog Dare Ya buy their boat on a dare?  Ou r 2016 favorite boat name:  Against All Odds . 2017:  Chocolate Socks.  If you see a vessel by this name at your docks or on your mooring field, please approach with caution and get the story of this odd name. 2018:  OH NO 2019:  Deja Blue 2020: Off The Rails 2021: Sheekasay The Linguist In 2017 we updated this post to include another category, as we felt compelled salute captains whose boat names are nod to a cultural sentiment they appreciate or their own family's culture. This year's pick s:  Andiamo! , Italian for "Let's go!" and  Ladatio , which we've learned is Hindi for "scandal." 2018's favorite:  Satori Blue 2019:  Lagniappe 2020: Tallawah 2021: Hahalua All in the Family 2018:  OutNumbered : I am fortunate to have a wonderful wife & two teenage daughters... however I am truly outnumbered at home & in everything I do. We laugh that people at various ports/marinas sometimes ask if I am an accountant or deal with numbers to which I respond, you will see in a minute as the family comes aboard! – Dan F., Newport RI 2019:  Thisldu 2020: Beau Twyde 2021: The Belfry and Muthashp Paying Homage 2018:  Gray Ghost : My boat is a gray Robalo R227 named after my father’s ship in the navy. Officially the USS Newport News, the heavy cruiser earned the nickname “The Gray Ghost from the East Coast” during her service in Vietnam, due to numerous missions taking fire without being hit. Her sister ship USS Salem is berthed in Quincy MA. – Randy B.  2019:  Nauti Nelli 2020: Cupecoy 2021: Steinsvika Dinghy Duos We've seen some cute as heck dinghy names over the past year and thought they warranted their category. We, of course, love when they have their boat name backstory, particularly when they're a standalone vessel instead of a +1, but we also love when the name is a nod to the mothership.  2020: A close family friend joined the Special Operations Unit for the Marines and was KIA. During his brutal training where all he wanted to do was give up he would recite the phrase in his head "Beast mode no breaks." This phrase became common among our families aft er. Our boat is named Beast Mode and our tender is named No Breaks .  2021: Bubblecuffer A Boater's Best Friend 2019: Bosun 2020: Alpha Dog 2021: Gunny's Dream Literary Reference Boat Names 2020: SKYMARK  came from a poem from Robert Frost bemoaning being somewhat lost at sea on a cloudy night and asking the clouds to part so he could find his old "sky marks" in the heavens so he could once again determine his location; thus the name. I have used it since my first sailboat in 1981. 2021: Vagrant Gypsy Money Matters 2020: Bottom's Up : Purchased from the funds of liquor sales at Bourbon Street Pub in Key West.  – Conch Harbor Marine, Key West, FL 2021: Ka-Ching and A LOAN AT SEA   These Modern Times / Current Event Boat Names 2020 : Covid Therapy : Boat the boat while stressing out about being quarantined during Covid 19 and thinking there will be nothing to do in the summer – hence our new boat! 2021: Lake Mode , @sea.calm , and Social Distins Change of Pace A frequent theme we've spotted with boat names is that the owner(s) have decided to slow things down, downsize, upsize (usually upsize), or, as was the case of our 2020 winners, finally take charge of tackling their boating bucket list at breakneck speed.   2020:  Here Today : Here Today was launched In January 2019 in the Virgin Islands and has traveled to 57 different ports from the Caribbean to New England – for our short stays we are “Here Today”! 2021: Call Me Crazy and Last Dance

6 Helpful Tips for Naming A Boat (With 26 Examples)

' src=

Once you’ve purchased your boat, it’s time to find the perfect name. Regardless of what type of vessel you’re naming, there are several things you should keep in mind.

In this article, we’ll cover everything you need to know about naming your boat.

Table of Contents

Why is my boat’s name so important?

yacht named after you

The tradition of naming your boat is as old as sailing itself. A boat’s name often says more about the owner of the vessel than the boat itself. You should put the same careful consideration into your boat’s name as you would with a new pet.

The name of your boat may often be the way you’re remembered in ports and harbors around the world. While individual names may be difficult to remember, someone will always remember the day they spent showing the Ankle Baiter’s crew around the shoreline.

Another reason that your boat’s name is important is that you’ll often reference it during VHF radio communications. A short and simple name works best for these scenarios, however, don’t let that discourage you from being creative!

What is the ceremony people do around naming a boat?

Boats that are named without going through a ceremony are said to be afflicted with bad luck and bad weather.

A traditional boat ceremony involves:

  • Lot’s of good friends
  • Naming the boat by smashing a bottle of wine or champagne on the boat’s bow

Even if you don’t believe in superstitions, it’s a good idea to throw a ceremony anyway.

A traditional boat naming ceremony can be a fun way to gather your friends and family together to celebrate your new boat.

Where do you put the name on a boat?

Typically, the boat name is placed on the transom and the sides of the vessel. When you register your boat’s name with either the state or federal government, you should check to see if there are any requirements for how to display your boat’s name.

The most common way to put your boat’s name on the transom is using vinyl stickers, however, you can also hand paint your boat’s name to provide more style.

The lettering of your boat’s name should stand out against your boat and be legible.

You can also show some boat pride by getting your boat’s name on custom life rings, life jackets, shirts, and hats. These accessories can provide a fun flair to your boating trips and be a conversation starter around the world. If you’ve got a longer name or slogan in mind for your boat, you can use a simple version for the boat itself and the full version of your custom accessories.

Is it considered bad luck to name a boat?

yacht named after you

It is not considered bad luck to name your boat, however, some consider it bad luck to rename a boat.

If you purchase a boat that already has a name, you can consider keeping your boat’s name or go through a boat renaming ceremony if you don’t believe in superstitions, like me.

According to legend, when renaming a boat you should carefully remove all references to the old name before blessing the boat with a new name.

How do I brainstorm a good boat name?

The best boat name is one you’ll see yourself happy with ten years from now. While it may take some time for the perfect name to come to you, be patient.

Don’t rush to name your boat after the first clever pun that pops into your head!

There’s no hard and fast rule that defines what makes a good boat name. Go with something that is both meaningful and easy for you to remember. As a last resort, there’s nothing wrong with using a name generator or one of our examples for your boat’s name.

Keep it simple

Short names that are no longer than three words make the best boat names. Popular traditional boat names such as Odyssey, Liquid Assets, and Seas the Day make use of this convention.

You will often have to say your boat’s name over the VHF radio. This is why it’s important to say potential boat names out loud when you’re brainstorming. You don’t want to lose precious moments during an emergency explaining what your boat’s name actually is, for instance, Lakeside Spotter can easily sound like “taking on water” over a bad radiofrequency.

Try out some humor

A clever pun can make for a great boat name. The best pun-based boat names are those that are clean and easily understood. You don’t want to pick a boat name you need to explain at every dock or gets the local authorities to pay special attention to you.

Idioms and common expressions can make for fantastic boat names. Even a simple play on words can turn into the perfect boat name. For example, you can name your fishing boat something simple yet humorous such as Reel Time or ‘Bout That Bass.

Remember that you’ll be saying your boat’s name over the VHF radio, and you never know who may be listening in. Keep your boat’s name relatively clean and leave the raunchy humor at home.

Make it personal

Naming your boat after a loved one can be a great choice. Whether you pick your grandmother’s name or your daughter’s name, naming your boat after someone you care for can make for a meaningful boat name. While boats are most traditionally named after women, there’s nothing wrong with naming your boat after a special man in your life!

Try playing around with different words around your loved one’s name, such as:

  • A title, such as Lady Louise or Queen Caroline
  • A play on words, such as Sunny Side Up
  • A play on traditional boat names, such as Isla Time

Another great way to name your boat is by incorporating your career or other hobbies. Your job is often a great starting point for idiom or joke based boat names.

For example, a teacher could brainstorm names such as Teacher’s Pet , Summertime, and Weighted Average .

Get creative

Some of the most memorable boat names are the most creative. This is why it can pay off to sit and think on your boat’s name rather than going with the first name you think of. A unique boat name may take longer to think of, but it can be worth it to find the perfect name for your vessel.

Keep a running list of all the boat names you come across that you enjoy. Often, you’ll be able to create your own unique name using bits and pieces of other names. Inspiration for your boat name can come from many sources such as television, music, or movies.

Don’t limit yourself to strictly nautical inspiration for your vessel’s perfect name!

Consider your boat’s type

You can always use your boat’s model to find inspiration for a good boat name. Pontoon boats named Looney Toon or Toondock Saints will find a place alongside small boats named Tiny Dancer and Toy Rocket. Try to avoid overused or cliche names if you can.

For bass and fishing boats, many turn to inside jokes and puns to find the right name. Keep in mind what you fish for (and catch) most often when you’re brainstorming names. It doesn’t make sense to name your bass boat after a catfish joke!

If you’re looking for ideas for your fishing boat’s name, consider the following as inspiration:

  • Bass Junkie
  • The Big One
  • Angler Management
  • Fishy Business

Sailboats and their owners can dream up a variety of names. Sailboats are often named in ways that remind you of the call of the ocean, such as:

  • Dreamweaver

Find yourself with a small boat? Even the smallest vessel can provide you with endless fun. Consider where and when you’ll be using your small boat the most when brainstorming names.

If you’re looking for something more traditional for your small boat, there’s plenty of names to consider, like:

  • River Runner

Your boat name says a lot about you

The name of your boat not only speaks to who you are, but what you plan to do with the boat. The perfect name for your boat may not come to you right away. It’s important that you give yourself time to think about different names and to try saying them out loud.

While you may believe that inside joke between you and your fishing buddies may make a great name for your new boat, will it be easy to convey your boat’s name when you’re in an emergency? Will you be able to say your boat’s name with a straight face when children are present?

These are important things to consider if you plan on visiting a variety of different ports that won’t know the backstory behind your boat’s name.

Reference the past with names like North Star (which sailors historically used as guidance on long voyages) or Neptune’s Glory , alluding to the Roman god of the sea. Maybe you'd prefer to opt for something a little more zen, like Nirvana , Namaste , No Worries , or No Regrets .

No one would be able to turn down an afternoon aboard the Rum Runner, as it sounds like a guaranteed good time.

Another route is to give your boat a name with a double entendre. Playful picks like The Good Life, Therapy, or Time Out are fun and don't take themselves too seriously. If you're Margaritaville-bound, we particularly like The Salt Shaker .

How To Name a Boat? Practical Advice, Good and Bad Examples

igor desperatesailors

Are you wondering how to name the boat ? Are there any laws or rules? Or maybe some good habits?

Well, they are! In this post, I will give you all my knowledge so that you do not make a life mistake (yes, the name stays with her for life, but more on that in a moment)!

Let’s start…

Why do Boats Have Names?

Does a boat need a name at all what’s the law, how long can a boat name be, a batch of fantasy boat names for your inspiration, why are boats named after women, can i name my boat ‘uss’, make your boat name clear for the vhf transmission, boat naming traditions, do not lose a future buyer of your boat, humor added to your devotion, shaken, not stirred, choose eternal before temporary when naming your boat, find out how your boat name consonants with other words and phrases, check up on slang, including other languages, sentimental boat naming, how to name a boat summary, how to name a boat are there any rules.

Every time we name something, including a boat, we pursue expressing ourselves in the first place. Among other reasons, we think about what we want other people to feel when they read the names of our yachts.

  • Do you expect them to be stunned when passing by your boat in a port, then shoot an instant photo?
  • Do you want other people to laugh at your joke, expressed in your boat name, or realize how smart you are? What is your cultural devotion or the purpose of your boat life?
  • Do you simply want them to know that you don’t give a sh** about what other people think?

But first…

Here are the four main reasons boats get their names:

This is the very old maritime tradition for the boats to bear their names. The maritime folk is superstitious beyond any reason, and there is always a bad chance at sea that you cannot predict whatever tools and instruments you have in your arsenal.

We shall give up boat names not earlier than we shall give up drinking onboard; the latter is one of the strongest maritime superstitions too.

Many of us associate a boat with a “living thing,” at least having a soul, and this is not funny. Let me explain what I mean:

  • First of all, how many car owners and car mechanics speak to cars?
  • How many serious computer geeks quote the “ ghosts in the machines ” catchphrase?
  • Did you know the ancient triremes had eyes drawn with paint for the boat to see better, including in the dark, to avoid possible dangers? This!

Done with meta-physics, now the materialistic reasons go: Boats are identified by their names in ports, in listings, in the registry, in ports, everywhere, including in the community among the peers neighboring us in the marinas.

Far often, the name of your boat identifies you better than your name. You better believe it.

For radio talks , we use boat names and not our names. You start a radio talk introducing your boat, and never yourself. You are addressed by the boat name; also, you address other captains by their boat names. Rule of thumb.

But after all that, there is one more crucial aspect. The law.

Any serious sailboat or a motorboat, we exclude dinghies and canoes alike, needs a flag registration to navigate at sea.

In the registry, boats occur under their names; thus, any boat needs a name, and she must fly a flag.

Such registration is a requirement by law for boats longer than 4.20 meters , equal to 14 feet, in the United States.

An appropriate boat at sea without a flag is accepted as a pirate boat, and the effects come.

Boat name registration is required by law for boats longer than 4.20 meters (about 14 feet).

The boat’s name length depends on the country where you register her and then which flag she will fly.

But, specifically for the United States, a boat name length should not be any longer than 33 characters, including spaces .

Thirty-three letters are relatively ample space for your fantasy, and we can hardly call it a “limitation.”

However, it is a good idea to make a name for your boat shorter than that, where possible. One of the reasons – is your future VHF communication.

Here’s a life hack we are sharing. While inventing how to name your boat, have a serious peek into the nautical fantasy games, online. Such games are the pirate games way too often, where an army of gamers give beautiful names to hundreds of their fantasy pirate ships .

Imagine, each fantasy captain bears a solid plan to arm a whole fleet, and take over Tortuga, Jamaica, or both. Of course, the names of their ships are creative, clever, of good quality, and may serve as a certain source of inspiration.

Have a look at a sample of fantasy ships’ names, we’ve picked, but they are thousands.

Bucephalus Leaf on the Wind The Dirty Oar Siren Of The Sea Phoenix Rising Sakura Darling Treasure Andromeda Driftwood Peste Noir The Hawks Claw III Naughty Intentions JuanTooThreeFor The 4 Winds Cherry Whiskey Ragnarok Chaos Bound Black Falcon

The Antelope Pintaholica Chimichanga Orange Tree Rosemary Delightfully Devious The Peggy Black Scorpion Cedarwood The Association Golden Fleece The Grace of God Singularity The Aztec Coral Snake The Agamemnon Boomerang Marie Antoinette

Beautiful, are they? And, here is a pirate game , for example, where such sail. You are not even copying someone’s real ship name, then! Well, we promised a life hack to enjoy.

Because it is such romantic, fantastic and thrilling. Boats are “she” in the language. History-wise, the nation who thought the ships were “he” eventually lost all their overseas possessions and sea control to the one who referred to their boats as “she” (kidding, but it’s true).

That also suggests the god of the sea could be a man. I’m kidding; of course, a stronger historical record indicates it’s the goddess of the sea who rules the oceans.

why do boats have names like calypso

No! You cannot name your boat USS, the United States Ship. You cannot name her “ The Government Ship ,” you cannot name her “ Russian Submarine ,” nothing of the kind shall be permitted .

Also, your boat name should not mimic any distress situation that potentially requires assistance at sea. Otherwise, it may seriously confuse Channel-16 listeners. We can guess that this rule denies words like “ Overboard ,” “ May Day ,” “ Sink ,” and “ Fire ,” also allusions to rough weather or medical conditions.

This also includes any phonetic similarities which may confuse a listener through the radio noise. For example, I doubt you can hide your intention to be naughty behind a “ Seize My Day ” boat name, as it may be consonant with a mayday distress radio call.

Reasonable enough, is it?

With a relatively short and clear name, you are avoiding a certain struggle when spelling it using the Phonetic ABC or explaining how to write it in a non-English-speaking foreign port.

It shouldn’t influence your decision too much, you shouldn’t sacrifice what your heart desires, but you note it.

Here we fantasize how Captain Edward Thatch, aka Blackbeard, would spell through the VHF the name of his ship “ Queen Anne’s Revenge ” entering Tortuga port:

How Blackbeard Would Spell the Name of his Boat by VHF

BLACKBEARD: “Tortuga marina, Tortuga marina, this is Sailing Vessel Queen Anne’s Revenge. Quebec, Uniform, Echo, Echo, November, Alpha, November, November, Echo, Sierra, Romeo, Echo, Victor, Echo, November, Golf, Echo. Do you read me? Over.”

TORTUGA PORT: “Tortuga marina. Negative. Repeat the transmission. Over.”

BLACKBEARD: “Quebec, Uniform, Echo, Echo… PSH-SH-SH… Sierra, Romeo…”

Blackbeard the Pirate

Do you want a longer ship name? “ Santa Catarina do Monte Sinai ,” 16th century, Portugal. A captain of this one should send her name by SMS to the port authorities, as he will never transmit it by VHF. On the other hand, consonants are voiced and not jibberish. By the way, you may notice that her name stays within those 33 letters, a legal limit in the USA for a ship name. Yay!

Where possible, try keeping your boat name clear for the officials in ports to recognize the name of your boat at once, even if it is long enough. However, do not limit your fantasy and your wishes!

Apparently, you may love the name of your boat that you already invented better than you love the officials and let them mess with it as they wish. Is your sacred desire to carve a whole sentence on your stern? Just do it. Sailing is freedom.

The most important tradition is that you are not allowed to change the boat’s name. So either you call it a superstition, but a very serious one.

Therefore, whatever name you choose for your boat, make sure it will s tay, and you won’t change your mind or style too soon.

The best advice – try it before you carve it !

Renaming a boat is the worst idea, as it may avalanche bad luck upon yourself and your boat.

However, this is the ancient maritime tradition, and the absolute majority of boaters follow it.

boat naming traditions

Yet another boat naming tradition or a superstition – do not name your boat after unlucky ships or characters, whatever glorious they were.

We do not consider this practical advice when buying a new boat, but we regret it when selling her.

Sailing folk shall forgive any weird name of your boat, even admire it, as soon as boaters are weird themselves (Why do we run away to sea? To have a break from the society, among other reasons). But an ugly name or an unlucky name is a very different story!

With this advice, take the shoes of your future buyer: choosing a used boat out of many sound boats in the market, will you prefer one named, for example, after an owner, “ Baron von Roorback Jr. “? Rubbish.

This!! Choose a brilliant name for your boat; it’ll warm your heart as well as the heart of your future buyer. In a boat trading listing, the name shall be your brand, and you win the competition. Aye, captain!

vruja boat name after small beach

Such is way common. Sailors far often express their sense of humor in their boat names. Here and there, we find the boats named “ Cod Father ,” “ Knot At All ,” or “ WYSEAWYG .” The latter comes from computer technology; the WYSIWYG abbreviation unwinds to What You See (replaced with “Sea”) Is What You Get. Sounds good to me.

Once in Barcelona, Puerto Olympico, I spotted a sailboat named “ Vodka .” Ye-ah, boaters give alcoholic drinks to their boats too often, “ Aqua Holic ” and “ On The Rocks ” names are already internet memes.

Jabberwocky witty names for a boat

Imagine you named your boat out of your today emotion, but your philosophy may change over time.

We have all been there, naming our companies, picking internet domain names: something grows on you, then stops growing, then what?

  • Don’t be too far into a recent pop culture unless your subject has passed the test of time. For example, “ Jabberwocky ” is a good thing, but a yesterday hero is yet too young for the enterprise as important as naming your boat!
  • Choose eternal things naming your boat, which you know deeply from A to Z. Do not rely immediately on what you have found on the internet, but dig up more information on the subject you have seemingly liked.
  • When I see a young guy wearing a tattoo with a lover’s name, both are 18 or about, and such makes me think, “what if?” The same is about naming a boat.

how to name a boat just for now

I saw a huge motorboat named “ My Sons ” in Cyprus, and people in the marina were rumoring the family onboard were “masons.” The consonance may be difficult to be detected at times; give it time to realize. Again, try it before you carve it!

Summon Pagan Gods, Maybe?

Seafaring counts a far longer history than any of the so-called world religions. You won’t betray Jesus or anyone alike if you name your boat after an Ancient deity. A Viking goddess maybe, like Valkyrie, or an Indonesian one, like Nyirara. Choosing the latter, you avoid wearing any green cloth while at sea, by the way, unless you want to try her wrath. “Roaring forties” is her job, elders say.

All these names are already more cultural rather than religious. Also, they demonstrate your education in some way. Do not forget to learn a subject before you pull a boat name out of random history. For example, despite her overwhelming fame, Odysseus’s famous ship “Argo” was very unlucky and goddamned — literally in her case.

Try Not to Cross the Line

When naming your ship, try avoiding the name which may potentially offend someone, including stupid people, unless you are naughty enough and a deviant name is your very purpose. Sadly, some port authorities sometimes are not the smartest people on Earth; you can experience bad treatment if a random clerk finds the name of your boat “unacceptable.”

My Boat – S/Y ‘The Hooker’

Here is an example from my own life. This is my boat , S / Y ‘The Hooker’. And no, she is not a “bad word,” ha-ha, but a traditional Irish fishing sailboat model (Húicéir) echoing 200 years ago.

Do I meet the same question in every port about her name?  – Yes, I do!

THE HOOKER boat the eye

A name may become very wrong in a place of your interest that you sail to. All languages and lingoes you cannot learn at once, of course, but to google about it a little is a good idea.

Do you remember the already proverbial story about the “Mitsubishi Pajero” car model, which suddenly became “a wank” in Spanish-speaking markets? Not even seemingly but letter-to-letter the same word.

I laughed my guts out when I realized it. No surprise, they have eventually re-branded it but too late; people already know. I only wonder how their “Pajero Sport” is feeling in the Spanish markets and how such a huge company missed Spanish, the second most spoken language on Earth.

Don’t be a “Pajero” when inventing the name for your boat (kidding).

Before your lovey-doveyness leads you to a sentimental boat naming after your crush, we recommend (out of own experience, of course) to think strongly about two other very important persons:

  • Future yourself,
  • And a future buyer of your boat.

Nothing is eternal on Earth; not you, not your boat. Sadly, a current love can become an ex someday, but if renaming a boat brings bad luck , then what? And you still need to explain it to your next before she boycotts your boat, ha-ha.

No, we cannot help ourselves decline to kid on this regard, so a few handy tips we list up here on how to stay relatively safe when naming your boat after your current sweetheart:

  • When her name coincides with the name of your child from a previous relation, or another relative, maybe a grandma or a great-grandma, then you are safe to convince yourself later whose name you have carved on the stern.
  • Maybe, a famous person is sharing the name with your GF, even better if that person has a strong relation to seafaring, like Elizabeth or Anne, including the nicknames, of course. You may also dig up the meaning of the name for the case there is a nautical etymology in it, like in Maria or Marina.
  • Make a derivative out of her name. This may also help when you are into selling your boat. Remember we mentioned how not to lose a future buyer? He also does not want to buy a boat if the name (purely accidentally) recalls a memory of his broken relations.
  • Add “Santa” or “St.” in front of your girlfriend’s name, which shall look traditional, supporting the maritime tradition regardless of how far you are into religion. Do you remember “Santa Maria” was Christopher Columbus’ flagship? So, in this example, once being dumped, you can reload your mind thinking you honor the historical ship and not one named after your ex anymore!

I knew a guy running a chartering business with a few boats in it. He named the vessels after all his girlfriends in order of appearance. If there is a definition of sentimental boat naming, this is it!

How many girls on the whole planet have a ship named after them? Not many. You can imagine, everyone from that guy’s circle, including the tourists who chartered , cachinnated when they heard the story for the first time.

boats have names short easy to vhf

I know, it’s a lot. But this is not such a trivial topic as it might seem at first. It is worth considering all the aspects of how to name a boat and choosing the one consciously.

Hopefully, all of the above tips and examples will also help you avoid any potential trouble or future inconveniences.

Ahoy and good luck, Captain!

HERE ARE SOME TIPS ON HOW TO NAME YOUR BOAT:

Throughout the past few months, many people have been seeing the bright side of the recent pandemic and have used their free time to head out on the water. This has led many new boaters to hit the sea and has caused experienced boaters to upgrade their vessels. When buying a new boat, something that may be a difficult decision to make is what to name it. Here are some tips on naming your boat!

tips on naming your boat

Some find naming their boat challenging because there are endless possibilities. Others may find it hard to name their boat because they want its title to stand the test of time. We have found that many boaters find they are happiest with their name choice when the name contains certain qualities.

Keep It Short and Sweet

When picking a boat name, it is important to keep it short and simple. A one, two, or three word name usually resonates with others and leads boaters to turn their heads when they pass you on the water.

Use a boat name that reflects your favorite hobbies and/or profession

Implementing a name that reminds you of your job or interests adds a personal touch to your vessel. This can tell other boaters more about you and your boat without explaining a thing about yourself.

Include the name of a loved one in your boat’s title

Although this may not be the most creative way to name your boat, it is absolutely timeless. We love seeing boaters name their vessel after their significant others, children, or dogs!

Use your favorite movies, songs, and artwork as a resource

If your favorite songs and movies have ties to the water it is a great way to get some inspiration when naming your boat. Some of these names can include works like Jaws and Margaritaville.

Use Puns and Double Meanings

A great way to get attention through your boat name is to use humor. In our opinion, there is no boat name better than one that makes you look twice and laugh. Names like these can include: Pier Pressure, Happy Hour, and Cool Whip. Using names with puns or double meanings allows you to be creative and use your own sense of humor when picking a boat name!

A boat is something that has its own personality. Therefore, we suggest giving yourself a few rides on your new vessel before giving it a definite name. Some say that they had plans to name their boat one name, but have changed their minds after learning how it rides and feels. Be patient and let the name come to you!

Ask family and friends

The people who know you best may have a few ideas on how to personalize your vessel. We suggest taking them on a few rides with you and then sitting down and brainstorming.

If you are looking for some ideas to get started on naming your boat, here are a list of some of our favorite names:

The House passed a TikTok ban bill. But is the app really a national security threat?

Devotees of TikTok gather at the Capitol in Washington, as the House passed a bill that would lead to a nationwide ban of the popular video app if its China-based owner doesn't sell.

The House of Representatives passed legislation on Wednesday giving TikTok two choices: find a buyer for the immensely popular video app, or face a nationwide ban in the U.S.

President Biden has indicated he would sign the law, but first it must clear the Senate, where it faces an uncertain future. Several other anti-TikTok efforts in the Senate have stalled, and it is too soon to tell whether the House's legislation will meet a different fate.

Why the House voted to ban TikTok and what could come next

Why the House voted to ban TikTok and what could come next

Whatever happens with this measure, it marks the first time a chamber of Congress has passed a bill that could shut down a social media platform, a move that civil liberties advocates say tramples on the free speech rights of millions of American users.

TikTok, which is owned by Beijing-based tech giant ByteDance, views the House legislation as an existential threat but not a novel attack, since the social media app has fended off numerous other attempts to put it out of business.

So what is different this time?

Here's a breakdown of what you need to know.

What exactly does the House bill do?

The bill gives ByteDance six months to find a buyer for TikTok.

If the company cannot sell the app in that time, it will become illegal for app stores and web-hosting companies to offer TikTok, as long as it remains under the control of a "foreign adversary."

That, in turn, would force Apple and Google to remove TikTok from app stores. It would also require internet service providers to make TikTok inaccessible on internet browsers in the U.S.

New DOJ Filing: TikTok's Owner Is 'A Mouthpiece' Of Chinese Communist Party

New DOJ Filing: TikTok's Owner Is 'A Mouthpiece' Of Chinese Communist Party

There is no way to make TikTok disappear for the 170 million Americans who have already downloaded it. But removing TikTok from app stores would mean that users would not be able to download any further software updates. And experts say without the ability to update regularly, the app would become slow, glitchy, buggy and rife with other problems to the point where using it at all would be just about impossible.

In other words, TikTok would die a slow, gradual death, rather than a swift demise.

What will the House bill mean for TikTok users?

In the short term, users will likely not notice any changes. The app will work as it always does for the millions of Americans who enjoy it.

And even if the Senate passes a companion bill, and Biden signs it into law, there is a six-month deadline to sell, which could be prolonged by court challenges.

Trump's TikTok Deal: What Just Happened And Why Does It Matter?

In the event that TikTok does become illegal in the U.S., it would be tricky to access the app, but there will be workarounds.

People could turn to virtual private networks, or VPNs, to shield their location and get past restrictions. The technique is popular in places like Russia and China, where governments have prohibited many popular internet apps and services.

Who could buy TikTok if ByteDance is forced to sell?

Very few companies.

As one of the most popular social media apps in the world, ByteDance would sell TikTok at a hefty price. TikTok is likely worth tens of billions of dollars, an amount only the biggest tech companies — like Google, Meta, Microsoft or Amazon — could afford.

Federal judge blocks Montana's TikTok ban before it takes effect

But the prospect of TikTok being acquired by a Big Tech firm raises instant antitrust concerns, since the Biden administration has taken a tough stance against tech industry mergers that serve to inflate the size and influence of already massive companies.

What's more, TikTok's sale would require the approval of China, which has said it would strongly oppose the forced sale of its first-ever global sensation of an app.

As the Senate considers a companion bill, it is possible that lawmakers in Washington would use the House bill as leverage to try to force TikTok to find a non-Chinese buyer, but talks over selling the app have been going on without a resolution for years.

What is the case that TikTok poses a national security risk?

Many in Washington, including lawmakers from both parties and top intelligence officials, fear the Chinese government could use TikTok to spy on Americans, push pro-China propaganda, or use the service to interfere in U.S. elections.

To date, lawmakers have not offered any evidence of the Chinese Communist Party using TikTok as a weapon against American interests.

Some critics of the bill say it is misguided if the goal is keeping Americans' data out of the hands of the Chinese government.

"The same kind of data that are collected by TikTok can easily be obtained by anyone who wants them by data aggregators and data brokers," said Jameel Jaffer , executive director of the Knight First Amendment Institute at Columbia University.

"The ban will be ineffective because China can access the same kind of information about Americans without TikTok," he said.

But have there been developments that have troubled officials in Washington?

ByteDance admitted in 2022 that former employees — but not government officials — had surveilled Americans on TikTok, including several journalists who were writing critical stories about the company.

And last year, a former ByteDance executive said in a court filing that the Chinese government has in the past been granted a "superuser" credential on TikTok, and that it was used to spy on Hong Kong protesters in 2018, something the company denies.

While neither incident shows that the Chinese government has used TikTok for espionage or disinformation campaigns on U.S. users, the developments have fueled a growing worry that Beijing could order that the app's algorithm be manipulated to shape what millions of American users see when they scroll.

What has TikTok said in response?

TikTok has long claimed it has never received an inquiry for Americans' data from Chinese authorities, saying it would deny any such request.

The company has also touted an initiative dubbed "Project Texas," saying that all U.S. user data has been transferred to servers controlled by Austin-based software company Oracle. TikTok also says Americans' data is now being monitored by third-party auditors in the U.S.

TikTok officials go on a public charm offensive amid a stalemate in Biden White House

The plan, essentially a data firewall, was intended to ensure that Chinese officials cannot access Americans' personal information.

But under Chinese law, companies still have to turn over personal user data once it is sought by government officials.

This is why national security officials in Washington, who have been investigating TikTok's ties to Beijing for five years, have not approved the plan.

There is a consensus in the White House that any move TikTok takes short of complete divestiture from China is unacceptable.

If the House bill eventually becomes law, won't there be a legal challenge?

It is all but certain that TikTok will try to have a ban overturned in the courts.

Legal experts say shutting down a social media platform in the name of national security is something that can only be accomplished if the security threat is overwhelming.

Otherwise, it will likely be considered an infringement of the First Amendment rights of millions of Americans, if the government cannot show that the speech constraint is justified.

"Restricting Americans' right to access information or ideas on a media platform from abroad implicates the First Amendment. There's really no dispute about that," said Jaffer with the Knight First Amendment Institute

Previous attempts to shutter TikTok in the U.S. have not been successful.

Three separate federal district judges have blocked efforts to ban TikTok — two courts during the Trump administration, and one U.S. court more recently in Montana.

Judge Wendy Beetlestone found in 2020 that TikTok's national security threat is "phrased in the hypothetical."

In late 2023, judge Donald Molloy said that a crusade by officials in Montana to block TikTok within the state's borders had a "pervasive undertone of anti-Chinese sentiment."

Many constitutional scholars say banning TikTok requires clearing nearly insurmountable legal hurdles.

What evidence does the government have against TikTok?

If officials in Washington declassify national security information about TikTok, that could change the public's understanding of the app's threat.

Yet some lawmakers are already questioning the basis for targeting TikTok.

A handful of members of Congress who left a closed-door briefing about TikTok with top national security officials in the Biden administration a day before the House vote said officials did not back up the notion that TikTok is dangerous with any new information.

"Not a single thing we heard in today's classified briefing was specific to TikTok," Sara Jacobs, a Democratic from California told the Associated Press. "These are things that are happening on all social media platforms."

If the bill eventually becomes law and ends up in court, the government will have to demonstrate on what basis it is making a national security case against TikTok, Jaffer said.

"You can't restrict Americans' constitutional rights on the basis of secrets," he said.

How I Make Over $800 a Month in Retirement Working Just 210 Hours a Year

H ow would you like to get paid to rent out your boat during your retirement years ? This is exactly what one retiree named Jim is doing via the app Getmyboat , the world’s largest boat rental marketplace. Nicknamed Captain Jim by his charter guests, he runs day and sunset sail charters on Lake Pontchartrain in the New Orleans area.

GOBankingRates had the chance to speak with Jim about how he learned about Getmyboat, his responsibilities as a boat captain and how much he earns as well as the amount of hours he works in this chill side gig .

Discovering Getmyboat as a Retiree

Jim had been growing bored during retirement. He reflected on his love for sailing, which he had been doing for many years, and realized he wanted to share this love with new people.

He told GOBankingRates he was aware that if he wanted to run charters for pay, he needed a U.S. Coast Guard Captain (USGC) master’s license to do it.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Jim went to school in Fort Lauderdale and took all of the required courses and exams to qualify for a 50 Ton Masters license, which is the most basic mariner’s credential.

After earning his license, Jim listed his boat out on Getmyboat to book customers and started hosting sailing charters.

Responsibilities of Being a Boat Captain

Being a boat captain comes with its fair share of responsibilities to ensure the safety of guests and the equipment. He starts by preparing the boat for charter, meaning he cleans the boat, works on provisioning and conducts engine and sail maintenance.

Once this is done, Jim said he greets the guests and provides them with a safety briefing. From here, it’s time to focus on safely operating the boat. This means tracking the wind, waves and other general weather conditions and making any needed adjustments to the route if dictated by the weather.

Aside from ensuring the boat is safely operating, Jim also has responsibilities to his guests. He monitors them as well to ensure safe behaviors.

How Much He Earns as a Boat Captain

“I usually run around 35 charters a year and make about $10,000,” said Jim.

If we break this amount down by months, Jim earns about $833 per month. He said he uses the money to offset the fixed costs of the boat. This includes insurance, dock fees, fuel and basic maintenance costs.

According to a Getmyboat representative, the average owner on Getmyboat earns over $15,000 annually. Some people earn even more with their listings and can turn this side hustle into a full-time job as a boat captain. (Retirees, however, may be content with keeping the gig as a side hustle.)

Most charters run for three hours. Jim said he spends another three hours preparing the boat for each one. This totals about 210 hours per year working.

Best of all, all of this work is seasonal, so he isn’t working year round. For Jim, the market usually runs from April through October or November.

How to Pick the Perfect Name for Your Boat

yacht named after you

A boat is not just a boat to a true boat owner. It’s a home, a way of life, and an escape from reality. As a boater, it is a right of passage (if you will) to give your boat a name. A name so fitting that the boat will project to friends, loved ones and the world who you are every time you pass by.

Why Name Your Boat?

Boat names can reveal a lot about the personality, passion and life experiences of a boat owner. Historically, the majority of vessels were named after female figures, either historical or personal, with names often representing an important woman in a captain’s life.

You certainly wouldn’t want to invest your time and money into buying a boat and then pick a name without any thought. Most people choose a name which has a special significance to them, but be careful not to select one that is too long or obscure. Ideally, it needs to be short, memorable, and you should be able to withstand hearing it repeatedly on a VHF radio.

Tips and Tricks To Name Your Boat

  • Think Unique. A boat’s name should always be an excerpt of your imagination.
  • Keep It Simple. The name of your boat should never be too long to where it doesn’t fit comfortably in the area of your choosing. If the name is short, memorable, and catchy, it won’t be puzzling to friends, family members and other boat owners.
  • Keep It Clean. Or in other words, “Keep it classy.” Using a name that includes profanity could give off the wrong impression, especially if children are involved.
  • Have Fun With Puns. Short puns, clichés or other play on words can add a lot of character to the boat.
  • Find Your Inspiration. Family, friends, hobbies, a favorite song or movie serve as excellent sources of inspiration.
  • Location Is Key. In addition to choosing a name, you’ll also need to take into consideration the best place to put it. When it comes to designing your boat name or choosing the right color scheme and font to accentuate your boat well, you can go the DIY route or hire professionals to help you visualize your ideal boat name layout.

Make It Official

In addition to the location of your name, you can either have the lettering done by professionals or order the vinyl letters and apply them yourself. Below are tips to keep in mind when placing the letters on the desired spot of the boat.

  • Choose a large, open area on the boat. Leave inches of boat space above, below, and around the name to make easier to apply and stand out.
  • Do not wax the boat prior to putting on your new lettering. The adhesive will not stick to the wax.
  • Last, but surely not least, make sure to apply the letters when the boat is out of the water.

Pasco deputy who fatally shot man in car named, video released

  • Bethany Barnes Times staff

A deputy fatally shot a 40-year-old man after a fight inside a moving vehicle near Hudson on Saturday evening, according to the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities identified the man Sunday morning as Paul Smith, 40. The sheriff’s office identified the deputy as Christopher Howell. Authorities would not immediately release further information about Howell.

Around 5:30 p.m., Howell, on duty, approached Smith outside a 7-Eleven gas station near U.S. 19 and New York Avenue, according to the sheriff’s office. Howell believed Smith to be a suspect in a recent battery case, and asked him to speak with him.

The sheriff’s office released body-worn camera footage of the incident, which the Times reviewed. The video shows Howell walked up to Smith, who was parked at a gas pump. The deputy said “Hey Paul” several times and told him to step out of his car.

At that point, video shows Smith, who had been standing and leaning into his vehicle, sat down in the driver’s seat, gripped the wheel and asked “What’s the matter?” as Howell grabbed Smith’s forearm. The deputy repeatedly told Smith to get out of the car. Smith remained in the driver’s seat and kept asking what was going on, before starting the car.

Footage then shows the deputy is inside the vehicle as Smith starts driving. It is unclear how Howell ended up inside the vehicle.

Throughout the incident, the deputy repeatedly screamed at Smith to get out of the car, the footage shows. Howell can be seen using a Taser on the driver while tires are heard screeching.

Eventually, Howell yelled, “Stop the car, you’re going to get shot.” Video shows Howell pointing his gun at Smith while he is behind the driver.

At a news conference, Pasco spokesperson Col. Jeff Harrington defended Howell’s actions as necessary.

Pasco records show several criminal convictions against a Paul Smith in that county, including battery and drug charges. Smith was convicted in 2019 of fleeing law enforcement by car, aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer and hit-and-run, and served three years in state prison.

That incident made news at the time , as law enforcement released video of deputies arresting Smith, who was found submerged in a swamp, covered in mud.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement, which helps agencies investigate incidents where officers use force, was on the scene Saturday night and is investigating the matter.

Bethany Barnes is the deputy investigations editor. She can be reached at [email protected].
