  • Crewed Charters

Enjoy being catered to on a private crewed yacht with a captain and chef who help plan the best itinerary and menus that satisfy everyone in your group. Typically all inclusive so all you have to worry about is making memories.

What is a Crewed Charter?

yacht group sailing

Your own private cruise…

No crowds, no strict schedules. Just you and your family and friends on a luxury private yacht relaxing in the comfort of well-appointed spaces while enjoying first class food and service tailored around your preferences by the yachts’ dedicated crew. Visit amazing destinations and explore remote beaches and islands at your pace on a custom designed itinerary.

Your Captain will take you there…

Each private crewed yacht has a dedicated licensed Captain who maintains the boat in tip top condition and understands its’ workings inside and out providing charterers with a sense of safety and security on the water. They will work closely with you to custom design an itinerary that will please everyone in your group. Sail, snorkel, scuba dive, hike, explore ashore or just relax on the boat, whatever you fancy, your Captain has it covered.

Your personal Chef will tickle your culinary senses…

An experienced personal Chef will design a customized menu incorporating your groups favorite foods and dietary restrictions. They will stock your crewed yacht with fresh, local ingredients used to create memorable culinary experiences for your included meals and snacks aboard the yacht. Your Chef is prepared to satisfy the pickiest of eaters and you’ll be amazed at what they can turn out of the yachts’ small galley.

You’ll never be thirsty…

From fresh coffee in the morning to hydrating drinks during the day to happy hour cocktails in the evening, your Crew will stock the yacht with your preferred beverages and the ‘ships bar’ will include all the ingredients for your favorite cocktails as well as some fixings for the Crews’ own special concoctions.

yacht group sailing

You’ll never be bored…

With an abundance of water toys onboard, you’ll have plenty to do in and on the water from snorkeling to kayaks and standup paddle boards to wake boarding and tubing or simply just chilling in the water on floating mats and noodles. Or perhaps you’d like to go ashore for a hike or horseback ride or enjoy a day at the spa. Whatever activities you want to get into, your Crew will lead the way. Some Crews have specialized training and offer instruction for scuba diving and kite surfing or they can arrange these experiences for you with a local company.

Choosing the Right Boat and Crew…

For a crewed yacht charter, selecting the right crew is often more important than the boat itself. Who you spend your long-anticipated vacation with can make or break it. That’s why matching your group to the right crew is so critical to a successful crewed yacht charter. One crew might be great with families and kids while another might be better with couples and friends. Many crews have certain specialties, such as diving, kite surfing, fancy water toys or types of cuisine. Our job is to listen to your requirements for a crewed yacht charter vacation and recommend the best crew we feel you would enjoy spending your vacation with along with the most suitable boat for your groups’ make-up.

There is no substitute for many years of experience and personal knowledge of each charter yacht and its crew. We regularly attend Crewed Yacht Charter Boat Shows where we personally inspect the yachts and meet the crews. Our 50+ years of industry experience and first-class reputation provide us access to endless Client feedback from previous charters as well as a network of other industry professionals to ensure we recommend the most suitable crews and yachts for your crewed yacht charter vacation. We are an independent booking agency for crewed yacht charter vacations. For several decades we have been offering clients suitable choices for a crewed yacht charter vacation handpicked from thousands of individual private crewed yachts. With no ties or commitments to any company or yacht we’re able to provide impartial advice on how different crewed yachts and crews compare so the customer can make an informed decision for a memorable crewed yacht charter vacation.

Why choose Intrepid

yacht group sailing

Experienced skippers

Our skippers have years of experience sailing the high seas. There’s no one better to show you the ropes (literally).

See the best of your destination by land and by water.

Best of both worlds

These sailing vacations aren’t confined to the ocean blue. There’s plenty of time scheduled on land to see the sights and check out the local culture.

We make safety a priority on each of our sailing trips.

Safety first, always

Our yachts are well looked after and regularly maintained and on day one, the captain will also conduct a safety demonstration.

You don't need sailing experience to enjoy an Intrepid sailing tour.

No experience needed

If you'd like to pick up some sailing skills, your skipper can show you how. If not, just relax, kick back on deck and soak up some ocean breezes.

We strive to use travel as a force for good. That’s why we choose to give back to the communities we visit, carbon offset all our trips and take our social and environmental responsibilities seriously. We’ve been officially certified as the world’s largest travel B Corp, which means when you choose Intrepid Travel, you can rest assured you’re travelling to improve the planet.

Sailing highlights by country

A beach with white sand and turquoise water on the Phi Phi Islands, Thailand

Explore the unforgettable islands of Thailand

From the famous landscapes of Phang Nga Bay to the pristine beaches of Koh Phi Phi (and all of the remarkable islands in between), a sailing adventure through southern  Thailand  promises to produce some of your favorite travel memories ever. Relax on golden sand, take a dip in sparkling turquoise waters and cast your eyes upon natural wonders you’ve only ever seen photos of.

Woman kneeling next to a sea lion on a beach on Isla Isabela, Galapagos

Island hop your way through the Galapagos

There are some destinations in this world that were made for sailing, and the  Galapagos Islands  is one of them. Whether you want to spend your time spotting the islands’ diverse array of wildlife (think spiky marine iguanas and giant turtles) or simply relaxing on the boat with a drink in hand as the Pacific Ocean goes by, a boat tour around the Galapagos is sure to be one for the highlight reel.

A collection of pastel colored buildings on the coast of Naples in Italy

Get lost in the magic of Italy’s coast

Sailing your way down the  Italian  coast is guaranteed to be a unique adventure you’ll never forget, thanks to a variety of stops featuring pastel villages clinging onto rugged cliffsides, scattered ancient ruins from a lost empire, and tantalizingly blue waters you want to get lost in. From wandering through olive groves to laying out on pebbled beaches, cruise the sparkling Mediterranean at your leisure.

A boat cruising the turquoise Adriatic Sea in Croatia

Sail the Adriatic Sea around Croatia

On a trip to  Europe ,  Croatia  is a must-see, but when figuring out how best to explore this Mediterranean country, sailing is the way to go. Whether you want to wander through medieval towns, lose yourself in sparkling blue waters, explore lesser visited treasures or indulge in this epic country’s traditional cuisine, you’ll be in utter paradise from the minute to step foot onto your own private yacht – all aboard!

yacht group sailing

In  Europe , we like to go classic. A single-hulled, 50-foot yacht gives you a taste of traditional Mediterranean sailing, not to mention it looks pretty spiffy in pictures too. A typical Intrepid vessel may come with three twin/double cabins, as well as a couple of single berths. You’ll have a recreation lounge, kitchen, three shared bathrooms and plenty of deck space for lazing around and looking fabulous.

yacht group sailing

When it comes to sailing in  Asia , catamarans are the way to go. They’re smooth, comfortable, and nimble enough to reach those out-of-the-way cays and little island inlets. The twin hull means there’s plenty of space to stretch out –perfect for those balmy evenings and lazy afternoons. Most of the catamarans in our fleet have four twin/double cabins, three shared bathrooms, a galley (that’s nautical talk for kitchen) and a small living area. There are even kayaks and paddleboards for those that want to get a little active (and bean bags on deck for those that don’t!)

Sailing COVID-19 requirements

Sailing faqs, do i have to help sail the boat.

You don’t have to lift a finger if you don’t want to (unless you need to turn the page of your novel or eat a grape). But if you’d like to learn the ropes, that’s fine too. Your expert skipper can teach you everything you’d like to know – from tying knots to unfurling the sails.

How much time is spent off the boat?

There’s about a 30/70 split between land-based and water-based activities on our Asia sailing trips. In Europe this is closer to 50/50 however, some evenings will be spent in port or a marina. Much of this depends on the weather conditions. There are usually at least a few hours each day spent exploring ports, trekking the surrounding areas or relaxing on beaches. Of course, depending on location, there will always be the chance to wine and dine at the local hot spots.

What will my fellow travelers be like?

We have travelers of all ages and nationalities sailing with us. Approximately 60% of our travelers are flying solo, followed by a mix of friend groups and couples. The minimum age of travelers on our trips is 18, or 15 if accompanied by an adult. We don’t have a maximum age as we believe those choosing a sailing adventure are like-minded regardless of age.

Who decides the rooming configuration?

Your skipper will allocate rooms on arrival to the boat. Single travelers will be paired up with another passenger of the same sex as per the gender marker on their passport, and this may mean sharing a double mattress or twin mattresses side by side.

What are the sleeping arrangements like?

This is our most common question! People are often hesitant about the idea of sharing a double mattress with another traveler of the same sex. Sailing boats tend to be very compact (we use real sailing boats), but the close-quarters nature of this travel is part of the adventure.

Sleeping quarters are designed to utilize the minimum amount of space in order to keep the communal areas as big as possible. In fact, lots of travelers end up sleeping out on deck under the stars, as it’s warm and there’s no air conditioning on a sailing boat.

Our boats have a mix of double, twin (two separate beds or two separate mattresses side by side) bunks, triple and quad cabins. Each trip will have further information about the sleeping arrangements in the Essential Trip Information.

Can I get a cabin to myself?

Single supplements are available on all trips, subject to availability. A single supplement is normally twice the regular price, however, where trips have inclusions such as meals there is a slight reduction in the supplement price. If you are interested in having a single supplement, please contact us to check availability and price.

Do the cabins have ensuites?

On many boats, bathroom facilities are shared, however, some boats have ensuites in each cabin that allow two people to share one bathroom. Our monohull yachts in Europe will have no more than two cabins sharing a bathroom. Most of our catamarans have four cabins and four bathrooms, however, these bathrooms are shared between travelers and crew. Check the Essential Trip Information of your trip for more specific details about your boat. Fresh and hot water is available for showers, and toilets are either electronic or hand-pump.

Will I get seasick?

Seasickness comes in a variety of forms. Common symptoms include fatigue, uneasiness, dizziness, and headaches. The majority of these symptoms usually subside after taking some time to adjust (usually a few hours to a day). Tylenol or Advil can help ease the transition. Heavy seasickness, characterized by vomiting, is uncommon, and it can be treated using medication. There are also a number of other self-management techniques you can try – such as sitting out in the fresh air, drinking ginger tea or watching the horizon.

For more information about beating seasickness, click here .

What will I eat?

Our Thailand sailing trips all feature an onboard chef who will prepare three delicious meals each day, plus snacks. In Europe, we operate with a trip kitty* that everyone contributes to. This is because there’s so much great local produce to taste in each place that it makes a lot of sense to buy food at each stop! This kitty will cover some of your food and beverage costs. On all our trips there will be an opportunity to enjoy a meal at a local port – we’ll be able to show you where all the good tavernas are. Please check your Essential Trip Information for more specific details.

*See below for information about what a kitty is

What about alcoholic drinks?

You are welcome to drink on board - in fact, nothing enhances a sunset more than cold local beer or a glass of wine. Alcohol is BYO (bring your own), so make sure you buy what you need before departure. Some of our boats have alcoholic drinks on board that are available for purchase at local bar prices. Drinking water is free of charge.

How much luggage should I take?

Due to the compact size of the boats and the sometimes rocky nature of a sailing trip, it is advisable that you bring fabric/canvas luggage. It’s a good idea to pack light as there will usually be a gap between the boat and pier. While the skipper or a fellow traveler can give you a helping hand, you’ll need to be able to lift your bag onto the boat.

What should I pack?

Sailing trips are a little different to regular group tours. There’s a finite amount of space on the boat, so it’s best to leave the grand piano, pet llama and foldout four-person mattress at home. The same goes for bulky suitcases, ten pairs of shoes and the surfboard.

This isn’t designed to be a comprehensive packing list, but it’ll get you thinking like a real sailor.

  • A medium-sized fabric bag that can be flattened or stored easily
  • A small day pack for shore excursions
  • Some sandals or deck shoes that can get wet
  • Sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat
  • Seasickness tablets (just in case)
  • Bathing suit (don’t worry about the snorkel and fins – we provide those)
  • Waterproof camera (for those sweet underwater shots)
  • A light weatherproof jacket (just in case of high seas or seasonal showers)

For a more detailed packing list, please refer to the Essential Trip Information of your trip.

What are the arrival and departure times?

These will vary from trip to trip – be sure to check your Essential Trip Information for more specific details. Some sailing trips will head out to sea on the afternoon of the first day. Others will remain in port overnight, however, we still ask that you join the trip at the requested time, as the skipper will need to deliver a welcome and safety briefing. On our Europe trips the skipper will organise a visit to the supermarket after the meeting to buy provisions for the trip. All travellers will have an input into the provisions, which will be purchased from the kitty*.

Please note that due to sailing being a heavily weather-dependent activity, sometimes itineraries may need to change. We recommend allowing an additional night at the beginning and end of the trip to ensure nobody misses any onward flights.

*see ‘What is a kitty’ for more information

What is a kitty?

A kitty is a fund or pool of money that all travelers can choose to contribute to at the beginning of a trip. It’s not compulsory however, we’ve found pooling the group's money in one place makes it easier to arrange non-included group meals and tips where necessary. You'll usually eat most breakfasts and some lunches and dinners onboard the boat, so it's best to buy supplies from a nearby supermarket or grocery store at the beginning of each trip. For meals off the boat, our skippers will suggest locally-run restaurants that specialize in local produce and delicacies.

What is the maximum group size?

The maximum passenger capacity on our yachts changes depending on which country you are sailing. Here’s a quick breakdown, but you can always find more specific details in the essential trip information of each tour.

Greece: 8/11

Croatia: 8

Montenegro: 8

SMALL GROUP SAILING TOURS

Our most popular sailing experiences are our Small Group Sailing tours, also known as yacht rallies or flotillas, which explore a rotating selection of worldwide destinations each year. Our trips involve sailing as part of a small group of yachts, following an itinerary which provides free time to explore along the way. All of our group trips are hosted by an Australian guide from Mariner Boating Holidays and a local technician/guide. You can join a trip on your own, meeting other like-minded travellers and staying in one of our cabins, or book your own yacht and travel with friends or family. If you do book your own yacht, we can either provide you with a local professional skipper (extra cost), or you can skipper the yacht yourself if you already have your sailing licence. We can also recommend RYA training centres that will help you organise the required paperwork so that you can skipper yourselves. Whichever option you choose, our guides will provide you with continuous support throughout, organising fun races, long table dinners and optional excursions along the way.

WHY MARINER BOATING HOLIDAYS

Small group comfort You’ll sail in comfort as part of a small group of yachts. Depending on the trip, the maximum group size can be 24-30 people but usually you'll be sailing with 16-20 people across 3 or 4 yachts.

Cruise in company and along the way enjoy fun races, optional excursions, dinners ashore, making new friends with like-minded sailors and travellers as you experience new destinations from the sea.

Your travelling companions Every group is different, but typically you’ll find your co-travellers will be aged between 30 and 65, enjoy keeping active, love the ocean, have a sense of adventure, love great food, an occasional glass of wine, and a good chat.

Your hosts Your Australian tour leaders are are experts at leading small group sailing holidays, and will be accompanied by a local technician / skipper. With a keen eye for detail and a terrific personality, your guide will ensure you feel welcome and fully supported. They will be available for the duration of the sailing tour to assist with the yachts, berthing, provide navigational support along with intimate local knowledge of things to see and do along the way. From the time you board your yacht our guides will be there to provide support and make your sailing experience stress free.

Flexible joining options All our trips are designed so that everyone can sail with us - single travellers, couples or larger groups/families! For 1 or 2 people we offer the option of booking a cabin (normally a max. 6 guests plus a professional skipper on the yacht), whilst groups and families can book the whole yacht for themselves.

More time to explore Our tours on average are 14 nights or more, which gives you more time to immerse yourself and really get a feel for the destination. Our trips also include more leisure days where you can choose how to spend your day! We do also offer some one week trips that are specifically designed for anyone short on time, trying to work within a budget or haven’t sailed with Mariner Boating before. These shorter 1 week trips are designed to be a small taste of how fun our classic Mariner tours can be!

Life on board Our yachts are modern and comfortable with areas to relax both below and on deck. Most yachts have 3 or 4 double cabins and are usually less than 4 years old. Below deck you will find the kitchen (galley) where you can prepare meals with the option to dine at the adjacent table or on deck in the open air.

On deck, you can throw down a cushion, curl up and read a book, or make use of the easy access to the water for a swim.

35+ years of experience We've been doing this awhile and tend to know a secret spot or two. We know you want to visit the main sights (and why wouldn't you!), but we also love to share our favourite spots you might not find otherwise.

Charting 140 Years of Innovation: The Enduring Legacy of BENETEAU

Motor yachts & powerboats

We love sharing the  boating lifestyl e with our family and friends. This love manifests itself in every BENETEAU built in any one of our many manufacturing facilities worldwide. Every  BENETEAU sailboat and powerboat  on the water reflects the best efforts of the finest architects, designers, and craftsmen along with the highest quality materials and the latest innovations. BENETEAU has been building  sailing yachts  and  powerboats  for all types of boating practices since 1884. Would you like to  buy a new boat ? Leisure boating, short trips, cruising, competitive sailing – whatever type of sailing you envision, there is a boat to suit you at your  local BENETEAU dealer .

BENETEAU: A LONG STORY THAT BEGAN IN 1884

The first BENETEAU boats sailed from the shipyards of Croix-de-Vie over 136 years ago. Since that time, the BENETEAU brand has been synonymous with quality and innovation to all those who have taken to the water – first by the fishermen who made their livelihood from the sea and then by the legions of recreational boaters around the globe.

Over the years, our commitment to innovating and embracing ideas, no matter how unconventional, has been at the forefront of who we are in order to bring you the best boat possible. BENETEAU was one of the first boatbuilders many years ago to use computer-aided design (CAD) as well as lighter, stronger composite building materials. We’ve also been at the cutting edge of using greener materials and processes to do our part in protecting the incredible world which we explore. However, all this innovation doesn’t mean we’ve turned our back on tradition. One thing we’ve discovered in over a century of boatbuilding is that new-world innovations work best with old-school craftsmanship. This combination has resulted in some of the most iconic sailboats and powerboats in the world – supremely seaworthy yachts renowned for their sense of style, luxury, and comfort along with their creative use of space and new technologies.

WIDE RANGE OF SAILING YACHTS AND POWERBOATS

Sailboat Range

We built our first sailboats over 135 years ago and many things have changed since then. The oak we once relied on has been replaced with strong but lightweight resin and carbon fiber. Where canvas once caught the wind, now it’s Kevlar and Vectran. We’ve transformed dark, confining saloons and cabins into bright, open living spaces. And the list of innovations in hull design and navigation continues to grow at a rapidly increasing pace.

However, some things haven’t changed and never will. Benjamin BENETEAU’s philosophy of building the strongest, safest, most beautiful boats on the water is alive and well. The BENETEAU family’s pride in craftsmanship and passion for performance can easily be recognized in every FIRST, FIRST YACHT, FIGARO, OCEANIS, and OCEANIS YACHT built today.

Knowing what to keep and what to change – that’s why BENETEAU continues to set the bar in sailing.

Powerboat Range

In North America, we might be considered by some to be a late-comer to the powerboat market, but in fact, we’ve always been a major force in it. As with most things, we have our founder, Benjamin BENETEAU, to thank. He was one of the first to put a petrol engine on his fishing trawlers in the early 1900s, thus changing the French commercial fishing fleet forever.

His successors found that power was a perfect fit for the bold, new hull materials they were pioneering in the ’60s. Since then, new technologies in propulsion have always found their way aboard a BENETEAU first, and power has long been part of our equation for success.

Today, there’s a BENETEAU powerboat or motor yacht for whatever you’re looking for – from casual cruising to long-distance adventuring, from fishing and diving to water skiing. They can be found on the open ocean, coastlines, harbors, lakes, and rivers. There’s a whole world to discover out there, and there’s no better way to discover it than at the helm of a BENETEAU powerboat, trawler or motor yacht.

THE LARGEST WORLDWIDE DEALER NETWORK

No matter where you cruise in the world or what port you drop anchor, there is a BENETEAU dealer close by to help if needed. Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

yacht group sailing

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

yacht group sailing

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

yacht group sailing

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

yacht group sailing

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

yacht group sailing

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

yacht group sailing

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

yacht group sailing

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.

8 Yacht Clubs and Marinas in the Philippines to Moor Your Boat In

Yacht Clubs and Marinas

FoodfindsAsia.com | 8 Yacht Clubs and Marinas in the Philippines to Moor Your Boat In | Filipinos’ history as a maritime people date back to prehistoric times. In fact, the Philippines’ basic sociopolitical unit today, the barangay, traces its etymological origins to the balangay , the ancient outrigger boats that were used by precolonial Filipino communities to explore and conquer islands this side of the Pacific. As a people belonging to a seafaring culture, it’s no wonder that modern Filipinos are taking a retrospective look at their glorious past as Austronesian mariners and are developing a renewed love for the ocean and marinas as present-day yachtsmen.

Today, Philippine marinas look to accommodate more and more yachts and other pleasure watercrafts as the years go by. In 2017, an ASEAN Briefing op-ed piece named the Philippines as a country with high potential in yacht industry growth. The natural beauty of the Philippine islands and its fantastic bays, combined with a growing interest in leisurely sea travel, can explain the spike in yachting activities throughout the country.

Are you part of the demographic that’s become enamored of the yachting lifestyle? Do you want to know where in the country you can berth your watercraft? Leading sailboat and motorboat authority Europa Yachts is happy to enter the conversation, and recommends the following locations for discovering the Philippines through yachting. Here is a short list of clubs and marinas in the country, organized by island region.

Manila Yacht Club and Marina, Manila, Metro Manila

Established in 1927, the Manila Yacht Club and Marina is one of the oldest yacht clubs in all of Asia, and is nestled in the scenic Manila Bay. It is also near other well-known landmarks in the city, such as the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP), the headquarters of the Philippine Navy, and the US Embassy. Facilities in the marina include a launching ramp and a fueling center, and the club itself is host to a restaurant and gorgeous function rooms. The Manila Yacht Club only welcomes visitors who arrive by boat, and it charges an initial security deposit of USD 750 upon arrival. Club membership is mandatory for medium and long-term mooring of boats.

Subic Bay Yacht Club, Zambales

The Subic Bay Yacht Club, which was founded in 1998, upholds itself as the country’s premier yacht club. It operates in the deepest bay in the country, and can host vessels well beyond 50 meters in length. Already benefitting from the innate beauty of the Zambales mountains surrounding it, the club hosts a number of other attractions, including its luxury accommodations, swimming pools, and its own movie theater, bowling alley, and nightclub. Those who venture outside of the club’s premises can also shop for well-priced imported goods at the Subic Freeport Zone, engage in water sports , or sign up for diving excursions.

Punta Fuego Yacht Club, Batangas

Peaceful Punta Fuego is a mecca for those who love the sport of sailing. As per its official website, the Punta Fuego Yacht Club aims to serve “a dynamic and vibrant community of boat enthusiasts and yacht owners.” This it does by playing host to a diverse population of watercrafts, from large catamarans and mono-hull yachts to small boats. Non-members of the club may use the berths for up to 3 weeks, and can refuel at the marina’s fueling station. The yacht club offers other amenities such as locker rooms, shower rooms, Internet facilities, a chart room, and a restaurant called Barracuda Bar, which serves delicious fares. Outside of the yachting crowd, Punta Fuego Yacht Club also caters to those wishing to celebrate weddings, conferences, and corporate events in their opulent quarters.

Puerto Galera Yacht Club, Oriental Mindoro

Further south, yachtsmen may moor at the Puerto Galera Yacht Club in Oriental Mindoro, an island location that’s home to tourist attractions like the Sabang Wreck dive site, lively beachfront resorts, and the Malasimbo Music Festival. Puerto Galera Yacht Club has been in operation for almost thirty years and lends services such as refueling provisions and yacht repairs from its marina. Boat owners also enjoy optimal convenience if mooring here, as they can also shop for spare parts in the nearby Batangas port.

Busuanga Yacht Club, Puerta del Sol Bay Marina, Palawan

Beautiful Palawan is a bucket-list destination for many, especially those who dream of cruising its crystalline waters. Accommodating the yachting community in this island province is the Busuanga Yacht Club, which promises secure mooring amidst breathtaking white-sand beaches. Here, each vessel will benefit from a typhoon-safe harbor, easy refueling, and direct access to transportation hubs like the New Busuanga Airport. Adjoining this marina is the Puerta del Sol Bay Resort, which offers luxurious accommodations to visitors. When not atop the deck of a boat, travelers can also explore the lagoons and freshwater lakes of Coron, go shipwreck diving, or relax in the hot springs of Maquinit.

Iloilo Sailing Club, Arevelo, Iloilo City, Iloilo

Iloilo Province is home to some of the country’s most beautiful old-world architecture, a flourishing ecotourism industry, and delectably fresh seafood cuisine. What will round off an unforgettable visit to Iloilo, however, is an excursion to the Iloilo Sailing Club on a leisure watercraft. The club accepts visitors and encourages membership in the case of medium and long-stay mooring. It also hosts a number of amenities and activities, including a dinghy storage, a beach bar and restaurant, and classes for those who want to learn about sailing. In recent months, the Iloilo Sailing Club has also been a convenient meet-up point for big maritime events, such as the Iloilo-Guimaras Paraw Regatta and the Seafarers’ Job Fair.

Cebu Yacht Club, Mactan Island, Cebu

The historic Mactan Island in Cebu was the site of Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan’s arrival in the Philippines. Now known as a commercial hub that hosts a prolific furniture and musical instruments industries, Mactan is also the location of the Cebu Yacht Club, an institution that is beloved by the locals. Aside from being an ideal spot to restock on much-needed fuel and supplies, the Cebu Yacht Club is also a trusted club to commission for boat repairs. There’s a good vibe in this club for everybody, as it sports both luxury accommodations and a waterfront strip of restaurants that laid-back diners can frequent. MINDANAO

Holiday Oceanview Marina, Samal Island, Davao del Norte

The Holiday Oceanview Marina is a major attraction of Samal Island in Davao del Norte Province, one that welcomes Filipino and foreign yachtsmen alike to moor within its premises. The space is quite roomy, in fact, with 56 berths that can fit vessels up to 15 meters in length. The club also has a boat ramp that can accommodate boats up to 18 meters in length. The well-guarded and weather-safe marina is a gateway to some of Mindanao’s finest attractions, such as the Pearl Farm, Hagimit Falls, and Giant Clam Sanctuary.

There’s no better way to discover the Philippines from end to end than getting onboard a seaworthy vessel and going on a long cruise, with stops in some of the most beautiful places in the country. Find a safe harbor in any of these major clubs and marinas, and participate in the renaissance of sailing in the Philippines.

Joe Lewis’ $250 million superyacht, ranked among the world’s 25-most valuable, sets sail after he pays US fine

Tottenham Hotspur Football Club owner Joe Lewis

Joe Lewis’ superyacht is on the move again after spending most of the past year holed up in a Mediterranean port while the British billionaire faced insider-trading charges in the US.

His 322-foot (98-meter) Aviva — which he put up as collateral for bail —  has traveled more than 400 nautical miles from Malta to cities along Albania’s coast as well as the Greek island of Zakynthos since  he was sentenced  April 4 to three years probation, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.

After departing Zakynthos earlier this week, the Tavistock Group founder’s yacht was near Kalamata in southern Greece on Thursday morning local time, the data show. It’s the most the roughly $250 million vessel has traveled in about seven months, though it’s unclear if Lewis is on board.

Lewis, 87, pledged his yacht along with his private jet to secure his release following his arrest in July. A few months later, Aviva docked until April 5 in the Maltese capital of Valletta, where it can cost as much as €750 ($800) a night to moor vessels that exceed 75 meters.

Lewis, who was scheduled to have eye surgery in London recently, was prohibited from setting foot on the yacht that has long served as part-residence, part-office while awaiting trial. He was only allowed on board after paying a $5 million fine after sentencing, which he settled soon after the verdict in Manhattan.

A representative for Lewis, who has a net worth of about $7.3 billion according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, declined to comment.

Lewis, whose global empire includes five-star hotels, private lenders and enclaves for the wealthy, launched Aviva in 2017. It includes eight guest suites, a helipad, padel tennis court, spa and a cinema. It ranked among the world’s 25-most valuable superyachts shortly after its launch, alongside those owned by Middle Eastern royals.

The yacht has also displayed works from Lewis’ private art collection, which is valued at more than $1 billion and includes pieces by Picasso, Freud, Klimt and Degas.

Events that authorities say took place on the yacht were a key piece of evidence that prosecutors used against him.

At dinner one night in September 2019, the billionaire received favorable news about Mirati Therapeutics Inc., an oncology company where he was a major investor, leading him to pass along the tip to a host of people, including the pilots of his private jet, according to US regulators.

Those pilots — Bryan “Marty” Waugh and Patrick O’Connor — were also charged with trading on inside information. O’Connor pleaded guilty to securities fraud and conspiracy and is due to be sentenced in May, while Waugh is fighting the charges.
