Description.

The magical Bras d’Or Lake is connected to the Atlantic Ocean via the historic St. Peter's Canal. This is Where the Ocean Meets the Inland Sea.

• Steer the boat & handle the sails • Experience the UNESCO Bras d’Or Lake Biosphere at sea level • Amazing wildlife sightings at St Peter’s Inlet • Pass through a historic tidal lock canal • Try your sailing skills on the inland sea and on the Atlantic Ocean

This is a hands-on sailing adventure on the Atlantic Ocean and the renowned Bras d'Or Lake in Cape Breton. Take the helm, handle the sails, assist with navigation, or simply sit back and enjoy. At the very pleasant and well-equipped St. Peter's Lions Marina, you will live onboard like a sailor in port.

Meet your boat and skipper at the Marina on your arrival evening for a welcome and introduction to the shoreside amenities and the yacht. Drinks in the cockpit and dinner 'at home at the marina' - or dine out only a few feet to the town center - are available. Take use of the available amenities and the companionship of other sailors. (Perhaps do some stargazing.) Spend the night on the ship.

Set sail after breakfast towards the Bras d'Or Lake through the island-studded St. Peter's Inlet. You could see eagles, hawks, and a variety of gulls overhead, herons and deer along the coast, and a few seals in the water. Anchor in a safe cove for a swim and lunch. Then, venture out on the large lake for some open water sailing to hone your abilities. Take the helm, manage the sail, or simply relax and enjoy the journey and surroundings. The skipper is ready to offer sailing advice and training. Return to Lions Marina and spend the night on the water.

Today, we'll go via the historic tidal lock canal (which has been in operation since 1869) in preparation for a sail on the Atlantic Ocean. Views of neighboring Isle Madame and the southwest coast of Cape Breton Island are excellent. We may witness pilot whales, seals, and a variety of bird species in the ocean and Lennox Passage. Return to St. Peter's at the conclusion of the afternoon.

You'll be sailing on a freshly renovated classic Canadian cruising sloop with plenty of character and modern comforts to ensure your sailing vacation is safe and enjoyable.

Our sailboat is a Niagara 35 sailing yacht designed by acclaimed marine architect Mark Ellis and constructed in 1980 by the iconic Canadian boatbuilder Hinterhoeller. She is one of 260 hulls manufactured in this type between 1978 and 1990. The Niagara 35 was designed as a passage-making yacht, built to the highest industry standards, and has proved to have accomplished Ellis' idea of '...building boats for longevity in the way they pleasure the eye and their durability in usage' for over four decades.

She likes to sail at 6 knots in our regular summer breezes and can maintain 7 knots or more when the wind picks up to 15 knots. She tracks readily, responds to the helm, and steers herself easily in a variety of situations. Tacking and jibing are a breeze because to the doubled mainsheet system and large self tailing winches for the foresail.

Captain and a crew of expert consultants and assistants have meticulously repaired and refitted it to near-new condition over the last 5 years. Upgrades for the twenty-first century include a solar-powered electrical system, electronic navigation instruments, refrigeration, LED lighting, new wiring and plumbing, a new diesel auxiliary engine, and other features.... Fresh rigging and canvas, new interior finishes and upholstery, warm air heating for the shoulder seasons, hot and cold running water, a well-equipped kitchen, and a private head are all standard features. It offers spacious accommodations for day sailing with up to six passengers or live-aboard for four. Both the vessel and the master have been approved in accordance with Transport Canada Small Vessel standards.

She is crewed and outfitted for day sails and multi-day expeditions on the Bras d'Or Lake and Cape Breton's coastal waterways.

About Our Cape Breton Sailing Tours

We offer half-day, full-day, and historic canal sailing boat tours on the Bras d’Or Lake in St. Peter’s, with a new adventure on every tack in our 25-ft sailboat, Cu Na Mara .

We are ideally situated on the lake side of the canal in the midst of spectacular, rustic scenery. St. Peter’s,  where the ocean meets the inland sea , provides options for adventure tours on both the ocean and the lake. The Bras d’Or Lake is one of the world’s premiere inland saltwater seas and the largest inland sea in Canada. The Bras d’Or Lake has a great reputation, known by sailors and boaters alike for being one of the greatest sailing destinations in the world.

Travel the lake or just the canal; the choice is yours, the pace is yours, and the experience is truly unforgettable. We provide a wonderful adventure trip for guests of all ages. Sailboat in the wind

See why our guests love sailing with us!

We found them to be very accommodating with our booking and gave us many options and plenty of time ahead of our date when there were changes to our booking. The sights from the boat were stunning and worth every penny. Highly recommend this activity!

We decided to add a little adventure to our vacation beyond hiking and golf and Richmond Adventure Planning provided it. It was an intimate experience with my wife, Captain Gordon, mate Larry and myself so we had a good deal of "hands on" experience. The inland sea is beautiful and large and both Gordon and Larry were able to share many stories about the past and present and the importance of being a UNESCO biosphere site.

The lake is amazingly beautiful, and Gordon a friendly and knowledgeable host about the lake and the surrounding area. He gently introduced us to the art of sailing and manning the tiller, pointed out sites, offered us oranges and homemade pickles and salsa, and extended our time on the water when the wind did not cooperate so he could show us a particular island. We had a great time and learned a bunch.

e booked this in advance to explore the beautiful Bras d'Or Lake and I'm very glad we did! We learned a lot from Gordon about the land surrounding us and its history and had lots of photo opportunities. Great experience for anyone who hasn't been on boats much (like my family) because Gordon is very patient with us.

We spent the whole afternoon on the water and the trip seemed over in the blink of an eye, which seemed unusual for this Seadoo owner who is used to more speed but I have never experienced the serenity and peacefulness that sailing offers. I highly recommend this tour for anyone looking to connect with the Bras d'Or lake and it's UNESCO designated nature habitat.

Drop anchor at Cape Breton Island for a glorious round of golf or to explore the Cape Breton Highlands National Park. The islands that dot Nova Scotia offer some of the best outdoor adventure playgrounds in the world.

Seafood Central

Nova Scotia is the lobster capital of Canada and charter guests who love nothing more than cracking claws will be in their element. Sail to Barrington where the lobsters are so good they even become the star of their own summer festival during the month of June. Beyond the buttered lobster there’s always sublime scallops, wild blueberries, rapple pie, oatcakes and the Greek inspired local Donair to keep you satiated.

Sip and Swirl

In the far reaches of Canada it seems unlikely that you would find yourself sitting in a pretty vineyard sipping an award-winning glass of Riesling. Whether it's that gulp down fresh mountain air or the salt whipped wonder of the ocean, Nova Scotia has an impressive boutique winery scene. With eleven wineries to explore, start at L’Acadie to taste organic bliss before delving deep into the bottles of Gasperau.

Where to Visit in Nova Scotia

Duck into the Halifax Citadel and see the clocktower to learn all about Halifax’s fascinating past. The vibrant harbor is a buzzing place to soak up the social delights of Halifax with its homely breweries, bright restaurants, and delightful shopping scene.

Cape Breton

Beaches, vantage points, waterfalls and no less than 26 trails mark Cape Breton as being one of the best islands in Canada for the active charter traveler. Be sure to rent a car and take The Cabot Trail, said to be one of the most scenic drives in the world as it tapers along the sapphire blue coast and serves up mind boggling vistas. 18th century seaports, golf courses, and lush lodges also await.

Bay of Fundy

The beautiful Bay of Fundy is a yacht charter dream. Boasting one of the world's highest tides you can soak up endless sea centric vibes. These waters are home to no less than twelve different species of whale. Whether hiking, watching from your charter deck with champagne in hand, or kayaking alongside the magnificent giants of the sea, the Bay of Fundy serves up unsurpassed natural beauty drenched in salt.

When to Charter a Yacht in Nova Scotia

The summer months are the best time to set sail for Nova Scotia especially if you want to make the most of the scenic hikes, the whale rich waters, and the best seafood suppers imaginable. While the direct summer months serve the most consistent weather and balmy temperatures, as long as you steer clear of winter, it should be smooth sailing. May through October also serve up the shoulder season months and there are plenty of festivals to be had in the spring and autumn.

Sailing Lessons – Nova Scotia

Learn To Sail! One of our most important goals is to provide guests with a hands-on sailing experience. While some of our guests have a little, or sometimes significant prior experience, the great majority are brand new to sailing, and we use this opportunity to offer beginner sailing lessons during your charter. If you are brand new to sailing, Captain Greg will give you a practical introduction, standing by while you are at the helm of No Rush II. You’ll quickly learn how a sailboat uses the wind, to know where the wind is coming from, and how to steer the boat in any given wind direction. You’ll try this on all points of sail – upwind, downwind, across the wind. And you’ll discover the magic of how sails act like airplane wings, providing lift and driving the boat forward using clean, quiet wind power alone. You’ll also have the opportunity to work with the sails – from raising them, to handling the sheets and lines that control the sail shape and make them work effectively in whatever direction the wind is coming from. Once you start to get comfortable with steering and sail handling, we can look at how to navigate using our state-of-the art electronic charts and navigation instruments. For our more experienced sailing guests, the big opportunity is to try what you already know on our boat – No Rush II – a 35’ passage-making sailing sloop of 8 tons displacement. Captain Greg will be happy to coach and provide advice so that you will enjoy the feel of sailing this very capable cruising vessel. Beyond the experience of sailing No Rush II and using her navigation suite, Captain Greg is always delighted to help point you to continued sailing lessons available from others, online and at clubs and sailing schools closer to your home port. For those who are thinking about acquiring their own first sailboat, Greg is also happy to answer questions and provide advice and information to help you along that journey.

My wife and I are starting to plan a trip up to Nova Scotia for next summer, 2010 and we're interested in a bareboat sailboat charter on the Bras d'Or lakes. I've read that they exist but extensive internet searching has yielded nothing.

If you're aware of any such charters, I'd really appreciate hearing about them. Thanks in advance for your replies.

' class=

You may consider contacting the Bras d’Or Yacht Club at www.brasdoryachtclub.com; or Baddeck Marine at [email protected]

Either of those places would probably be able to give you the information that you are seeking.

Hello DocReid,

My name is Fiona and I work with Nova Scotia Tourism.

Hi DocReid, this is Glenn from Nova Scotia Tourism.

As already mentioned, calling the various marinas around the Bra D'or lakes may give you a contact. There are other marinas you may wish to contact beyond those already mentioned and you can find a list on novascotia.com

Here is one charter that may be of use for you;

Thrumcap Sailing Charters

Sailing charters on Bras d’Or Lakes; full- and half-day sails; up to 5 passengers.

Open Jun 15–Oct 15.

902-456-5223

Fax: 902-479-1488.

I've been trying to call but only get voicemail. The number is in service so it may still be a good bet.

As a quick note, the reason you find a lot of charters listed that are no longer in business, is due to the high cost of maintenance on sailing craft and a huge spike in insurance costs in the last several years.

That being said, if you don't find anything right away, keep checking. Many tour operators, including new ones, are still setting up for 2010 and one may start up soon.

Hope this is helpful.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I had emailed the only contact at the YC but that address came back as invalid/dead. I'll try the other marinas.

We're looking to bareboat charter for a couple days, living on the boat rather than just taking a half or full day tour.

Hi DocReid, Glenn from Nova Scotia Tourism here again.

In fact I did find several other listings for this operator that mentioned multi-day trips.

Tripadvisor staff removed this post because it did not meet Tripadvisor's forum posting guidelines with prohibiting self-promotional advertising or solicitation.

Hi DocReid,

Welcome to the NOVA SCOTIA TRAVEL FORUM.

I would just like to HIGHLIGHT further a point that has already been made...

It is still April here in Canada... so many things are not open yet for the Summer Season... still early days... early for Spring infact in many parts of the country. We've had a particularly mild winter in Canada this year... whereas in a typical year... we'd still be well under a cover of snow (or shovelling an unexpected Spring Snowstorm / Blizzard).

So it is possible that some of the phone calls you are making are going to go thru to lines that are "out of service".... doesn't mean that the business is gone under... BUT that as Marinas are a seasonal business many will keep their phone number for the whole year, but disconnect service over the winter months (why pay for something you are not using).

You will probably have much better luck reaching people by phone come May.

Thought you'd want to know...

You are very welcome.

BTW, when all is said & done do come back and share a TripReport with us here in the FORUM.... we'd love to hear about your Bareboat Sailing Adventure.
