The popular Bali Catamaran in all its variations

The Bali catamaran, designed and built specifically with chartering in mind, has become so popular that it’s been hard to keep up with all the new models, hard to spot which one has just the right size and amenities to perfectly fit your group's sailing holiday charter needs.

So we decided to write a short article for our blog. It’s not exhaustive, and it’s not intended to place the Bali above the rest of the cruising catamaran brands in charter. Quite the opposite. The table below forms a snapshot of one popular brand typical of all those out there. We hope it helps you cut through the noise as your selection process begins.

Beginnings of the Bali Catamaran

Bali charter catamarans come from the French boatbuilder Catana Group. Prior to the Bali’s appearance, Catana had carved a name for their true blue-water cruiser, boats with dagger boards and large sail plans.

Recognising these boats were not ideal for holiday chartering, and to meet the growing demand in this new leisure travel sector, Catana set its designers to work on a craft that was specifically designed an built with chartering in mind. The Bali is the result - a new sort of cat, one that emphasised living space and ease of helming for the modern leisure sailor with family and friends along on vacation.

That's not to say the other catamaran manufacturers were not already offering new charter boat options. The likes of Lagoon, Leopard and Fountaine Pajot were equally developing ranges to meet market demand, and through the 2000s some fabulous cruising cats suitable for charter began coming into service.

So many Bali cats in an expanding market

Bali's innovations gave them a footing in the fast-growing sailing vacation market of the early 2010s and success has bred success. Catana have launched so many Bali models in the ensuing decade that it is often quite challenging to convey differences in models, differences often subtle but important in our drive to ensure our boat recommendations are the right ones.

In 2014 The first Bali model hit the water - the four-cabin 4.5, appearing on the books of charter operators in the Mediterranean and Caribbean before spreading elsewhere. There was a new name in our vocabulary, and it fast became a frequently used one.

In the years since, we have added all Bali models to our charter offerings as they have progressively been introduced to the market. Our collection now stands at nine current and five older models ranging from 11 metres (37ft) to 16.4 metres (54 feet), from versions with two double cabins to six, and with a motor boat for those who prefer power to sail. All are available for bareboat charter with or without skipper, and there are a number of 5.4s in charter fully crewed.

A summary of Bali catamarans for charter

With boats dating back to 2014 and three completely new models in the 2020’s, our Bali selection now appears as follows:

Notes re cabin numbers:

Most Bali models include the option of fewer cabins than itemised above. Those boats are Owner’s Versions , with one large cabin fully occupying a hull. In charter, the higher number of cabins listed for each model, as above, is the standard and are a significant majority of the options available at any given time.

Bow cabins are small singles, normally used by crew if engaged.

Making your choice of catamarans for charter

All of these Bali catamarans are listed on our website in the destinations they operate. There are many factors in setting prices and older does not necessarily mean cheaper. Furthermore, there are many cats in charter from other boatyards that can undoubtedly be considered alongside the Bali boats.

If you are considering a great all-round catamaran with modern innovations for charter in any of our destinations, we hope this guide provides a practical overview of one popular brand. The next step is to talk to us for full details of the options that best suit your group, and informed comparisons for making your choice. Book your ideal sailing holiday charter catamaran, and then just go sailing!

In 2019 the Bali 5.4 catamaran entered charter fleets with the bareboat option added. Until now such a large boat was only available with paid skipper and crew. This is a significant development in yacht chartering: it continues a recent trend towards larger boats progressively coming into charter on a self-skipper basis.

Boat Test: Bali Catsmart 38′

Ample lounging and sunbathing area

Smart thinking: Bali Catamarans have been producing voluminous cruising catamarans in huge quantities since 2014 – during that time they have perfected the art as Sam Jefferson discovers.

They say that one of the keys to happiness and wellbeing is self acceptance. The ability to look a good hard look at yourself and say, ‘well, this is who I am, take it or leave it’ is a hugely important step if you want to achieve wellbeing. What has this got to do with the Bali Catsmart? I hear you cry. Well, it’s just a gut feeling I have but, in the world of yachts, more specifically multihulls ,  Bali catamarans is the marque that is the most willing to accept what it is and feel at ease with this. Unlike some yachts that try to be all things to all sailors, the Bali is unashamedly a cruising catamaran and the company has stuck with this basic concept since they launched their first boat in 2014. Perhaps being part of the Catana group helped because Catana had a deserved reputation for producing top end performance catamarans so Bali felt at ease producing something more unashamedly tailored for cruising.

I do not mean this in a negative way. If you start with a very clear concept of what you want, then you are far more likely to reach a satisfactory conclusion. In the case of Bali, this means providing a comfortable platform for cruising while ensuring performance is perky enough to keep you happy on passage. The company has not been afraid to innovate either; guided by the steady hand of Olivier Poncin, who sadly recently passed away, Bali has pioneered a number of clever features including the tilt/slide ‘garage door’ style saloon door and also replacing the normal trampoline at the bow with a solid foredeck, which massively boosts exterior space. Along the way, the boats have been styled in a manner that fairly yells, ‘I am a cruising cat, take it or leave it’. This is an admirable philosophy which has seen the company shift truckloads of Balis both for private owners and also for charter.

All of which brings me to the Bali Catsmart, their latest and also smallest cat in their range at 38’. This is exciting news in itself, as there is precious little on the market in this size bracket and when you combine that with Bali’s commitment to providing masses of internal volume, you have a truly interesting proposition. Designed by the experienced Xavier Fay, the Catsmart retains all the key features of previous models (tilt/slide saloon door, solid foredeck) but simply puts it in a smaller package.

Sunset sailing on Catsmart

Styling wise the Bali Catsmart 38′ is very much of a piece too; that means boxy, modern looks with that distinctive solid foredeck further augmented by a full width bathing platform at the stern which further adds to the boxiness. The freeboard is pretty generous and the Catsmart boasts XXm of clearance from the waterline to the nacelle – important to avoid slamming. The rig is set well back on the coachroof which allows for a decent sized foretriangle to augment the full battened main. The sail area is surprisingly large for a cruising cat even if you go for the self tacking jib as opposed to the optional genoa and, with the lack of a bridgedeck helm station, the boom can be set low on the coachroof which considerably improves both the look of the boat and also keeps the centre of effort low. It all points to decent performance.

sailing catsmart

In terms of hull form, the Bali, in common with so many catamarans these days – features relatively fine waterlines with a distinct ‘step’ outwards above which boosts internal volume while also ensuring the hull is easily driven. This is an unashamed cruising catamaran so, as you can imagine, there are stub keels as opposed to daggerboards. The rudders are positioned aft of the propellers which considerably improves performance and also are part of one of the most distinct featured of the Catsmart –  that she features twin wheels set well outboard as opposed to the bridgedeck arrangements so favoured on many out and out cruising yachts. The steering is cable driven and, again, this points to better performance and feel.

First impressions are good as you view the Bali Catsmart 38′ from the dockside. Sure, she’s boxy but that low boom and something in her lines gives her a purposeful look. She certainly doesn’t feel small though and is definitely high sided so the best way to get onboard is via the low platform which stretches the width of the stern. These are the bathing platforms and in the middle is a contraption for raising and lowering the dinghy with two handy cleats either side. It’s a nifty solution to the question of getting the tender onboard. Step up on deck  and you are directly in front of the twin helms set well outboard of the cockpit with their own seats plus individual biminis which look a bit silly but are extremely important to provide a bit of protection. The helm seats flip up to provide good access to the twin 20hp Volvos Pentas. Moving inboard from here, there is a bench aft to enclose the cockpit and this has storage for the gas locker etc plus a barbecue. The traveller runs aft of this so is well out of the way. Step forward about 1.5m and you are in the saloon which, on a hot day, blends seamlessly with the cockpit thanks to that legendary garage door.

twin helm boat

Staying on deck for the moment, however, the sail control’s lines are led under the bridge deck and protected by plastic covers, emerging via the coachroof sides to a pair of winches either side of the twin helms, and there is a third one to starboard for the main sheet. All are within reach of the helm. The throttle controls are only to starboard but are also well positioned. The side decks very broad and there are decent handholds on the coachroof. The coachroof is to some extent rather dead space due to the low boom. This means you could only lounge on it while at anchor and Bali seem to have decided that there is enough lounging space already and left it as a space to put solar panels and tidy up the mainsail.

Bali Catsmart 38'

Head up forward and there Is that trademark solid front deck with a table set into a central recess. It looks a bit barren without all the cushions in place but once they are all in place it suddenly looks extremely inviting and very nice for sundowners and general sunbathing. There is a decent sized lazarette plus two huge lockers set in the bows making for masses of storage.

Lounge and sunbathing

Head into the saloon of the Bali Catsmart 38′ via that huge tilt slide door and you find yourself in a very light space that feels much less spartan than some earlier models. Speaking to Bali about this, thy stated that they had made a very conscious effort to move away from boats tailored for the charter market and were looking to broaden their appeal to private owners. The results are pleasing. There is a large dining table to port which can seat eight comfortably while the sliding side windows open up the whole space when the sun shines.

Dining area - Catamaran

Forward is a galley which has a small step down to accommodate the curvature of the coachroof. The galley runs the full width of the nacelle and this makes for good all round views while you cook. There is a nice twin sink to port with a thoughtful bin set up. The Eno hob and oven are to starboard and there is a big upright fridge and separate upright freezer set into the kitchen units. Worktop area is generous and there are good fiddles to keep everything in place as you prepare your food.

kitchen aboard boat

Head down into the hulls and the main  stateroom is to starboard and features a big sliding door for privacy then a huge suite with a double berth aft and big shower room and heads forward.

Bali Catamaran - berth

There is a lot of space and storage while five big portlights make for a lot of light and feeling of space. The port hull has two doubles which share a heads/shower. Up forward it’s probably a queen size berth while aft a king. The heads has a separate shower stall and feels adequate if not huge. As you can imagine, everything feels a bit tighter here but it’s still a roomy space.

Showerroom aboard

The Bali Catsmart 38′ Under sail

Test day for the Bali Catsmart 38′ took place off Canet en Roussillon in France on a pristine day which started with very little wind but peaked at about 15kn. We headed out from an absurdly tight space which demonstrated that the lines of sight from the outboard helms was good. You can see all four corners of the boat from either helm by looking through the saloon windows essentially. It’s never going to be as good as a bridgedeck arrangement for parking but the trade off is a markedly better helming position for sailing – and that is essentially what we are all here for. Getting the mainsail up was Relatively easy compared to many cats thanks to the boom being nice and low and the boat behaved well on the wind, hitting 8.5kn in 13kn true. I’d say the boat felt a good deal more sprightly than most cruising catamarans and the twin helms set outboard gave the boat a much sportier feel than many of her contemporaries. I wouldn’t put the general ‘feel’ of the helm in the same category as a monohull but it was a marked improvement compared to rivals and, given that only Nautitech and Excess offer this system on production cruising cats, it’s a real boon.

Catsmart arial

As stated at the top of this article, Bali is very clear on what it wants to provide; a pure cruising catamaran and by having a clear design brief, they achieve this with aplomb. That said, the boat is surprisingly sprightly performance wise and the outboard helms are a really nice feature. The decision to soften up the interior compared to previous models is also welcome – as is the decision to launch a boat that is under 40’. It all makes for a very pleasing boat that blends goo interior capacity with fine performance.

Bali Charter Programs & Tax Program

Catamarans have become so popular in the last ten years that the demand far outweighs the supply. This is great for owners, but not so much for buyers. Catamaran values hold better and longer than monohull values because the market just does not have enough multihulls to fill the demand. New catamarans with increasingly high tech construction and bells and whistles throughout for creature comfort are becoming more and more expensive. So we are always looking at ways to reduce costs of yacht ownership for our clients. Learn about our charter yacht management programs and boat as a business programs  including our co- management program with tax advantages , monthly income and other attractive benefits. Bali catamarans are available in these programs and our services come at NO EXTRA cost to you!

Bali Catamaran Brokerage

Catamaran Guru can represent you as your buyer’s broker if you are in the market for a pre-owned catamaran. Being represented by a professional brokerage house does not add a penny to the yacht purchase price. Yes, the buyer’s broker is totally free to the buyer. So why not work with your own broker who will work for you when looking to buy a boat? Search our Global Catamaran Search for pre-owned catamarans .

Bali 4.2 packs signature features into 42ft

  • October 6, 2021

A world premiere at this year’s Cannes Yachting Festival, the Bali 4.2 sail cat slips between the Catspace and upcoming 4.4 to offer remarkable living spaces, highlighted by an expansive foredeck, flybridge lounging and the remarkably roomy saloon created by the signature ‘Bali door’. By Emmanuel Van Deth.

Bali, 4.2, sail, sailing, catamaran, France, Canet, Catana, Asiamarine, Hong Kong, Asia

The 4.2 is among five sailing models Bali has launched in the past two years

It has been seven years since Bali began to make a name for itself by debuting its first models at the 2014 Cannes Yachting Festival. The DNA of the brand remains unchanged: maximum volume and pleasure, ease of use and disappearance of the internal/external divide on demand.

As for the new models, they’re being rolled out rapidly. Aside from the flagship 5.4, the other five sailing yachts in the current range have all been released in the last two years. After the Catspace Sail (Review Issue 56) premiered at Boot Dusseldorf last year, the Bali 4.8 (Review, Issue 59) and 4.6 followed.

This year, the French shipyard has splashed the 4.2, which had its world premiere at this year’s Cannes Yachting Festival, while the 4.4 is the next addition to the modern fleet.

Bali, 4.2, sail, sailing, catamaran, France, Canet, Catana, Asiamarine, Hong Kong, Asia

Bali performance is inherited from parent company Catana Group

Comparing the new 4.2 to predecessors like the 4.1 and 4.3, there have been few changes to the coachroof: the nacelle is still topped by a large roof overhang. The hulls have numerous openings integrated into a black reveal – note the double function of longitudinal reinforcement and rain shield. The hulls feature bows that are stubby and inverted.

However, for those who feel the different Balis look too alike to be easily identified, you should be able to recognise the 4.2: it’s currently the brand’s only model with a spreader-less rig. The aluminium mast is slightly bigger in fore-and-aft section to ensure optimum stiffness with a pair of cap-shrouds and lowers.

Bali, 4.2, sail, sailing, catamaran, France, Canet, Catana, Asiamarine, Hong Kong, Asia

The French builder’s 4.2 measures 42ft 2in in length

This formula has the advantage, at comparable weight and cost, of simplifying the setting-up of the standing rigging and improving aerodynamics. Some might suggest that the windage of a Bali is large enough that airflow through the rig might not make much difference … well, it does.

EXPANSIVE DECK SPACE

It’s tricky to explain the aft cockpit as it’s really an integrated part of the nacelle. On the 4.2, the iconic lifting ‘Bali door’ is 11ft wide and 7ft 2in tall and opens or closes the living space on demand, depending on the conditions. In closed mode, there’s enough room to move around outside and even enjoy the bench seat.

The 4.2 has two large sugarscoops, joined by an uninterrupted platform, overhung by tilting stainless steel davits. This is also where you access the engine compartments, where the liferaft is stowed and there are lockers here, too. On the starboard side, a plancha-style barbecue can be fitted.

Bali, 4.2, sail, sailing, catamaran, France, Canet, Catana, Asiamarine, Hong Kong, Asia

Options include a plancha-style barbecue in the aft cockpit

The flybridge is accessed by steps moulded into both sides. Like the side-decks – minimum 2ft wide – moving about on deck is made safe by numerous handrails and guard wires.

The sail manoeuvring station, lower down, is equipped with a battery of clutches and three winches. The two on the outside are cleverly angled to receive the gennaker or spinnaker sheets. The whole system is operational and intuitive. Only the port winch is a little bit far away.

The helm bimini is somewhat low when standing, but this helps maintain the mainsail area, which remains easily accessible. The bench seat can accommodate two adults, then there’s the central lounge pad and the aft sundeck, allowing for a total of six people up top.

Bali, 4.2, sail, sailing, catamaran, France, Canet, Catana, Asiamarine, Hong Kong, Asia

Classic Bali features include the forward door and the solid foredeck

The enormous solid foredeck features a huge, almost full-beam sunbathing area plus a sunken cockpit with table that connects to the forward saloon door. The total deck area is 852sqft, almost 80sqm, which is 10 per cent more than competitors’ models of this length.

Anchoring operations are well managed with a recessed and integrated bow roller, a large chain locker and a powerful windlass. A cut-out is provided in the deck to monitor the anchor and chain. A very deep locker has been moulded out under the benches. A 5ft 5in watertight door provides direct access to the nacelle, while an 8in sill protects the interior from any unwanted water ingress

OPEN INDOORS

When all the doors, the forward hatch and the lateral bay windows aft are open, the living area does not give the feeling of being inside, which is one of the major appeals of Bali models.

Bali, 4.2, sail, sailing, catamaran, France, Canet, Catana, Asiamarine, Hong Kong, Asia

When the ‘Bali door’ is raised, the interior enjoys extra space, natural light and ventilation

In a few seconds, however, the saloon can be enclosed. The headroom is generous, varying between 6ft 6in and 6ft 10in.

Six people can sit at the dining table – two sizes are available – without feeling crowded and eight people would still have elbow room. To starboard, there’s the option of two comfortable lounge chairs or a sofa and forward is the huge, 326-litre refrigerator/freezer unit.

Forward, down a small step, is the chart table to starboard, the foredeck door and the galley to port. The excellent galley has an L-shaped countertop forward and a long counter with sink in the centre, with enormous storage space under both.

Bali, 4.2, sail, sailing, catamaran, France, Canet, Catana, Asiamarine, Hong Kong, Asia

The large fridge has a 326-litre capacity

The model presented to us in Canet-en-Roussillon, Bali’s home on France’s south coast, featured the three-cabin version with the port hull dedicated to the owner, while a four-cabin version is also available. Four wide steps on each side lead down to the hulls.

The owner’s suite includes a bench seat and a dressing table/desk, with the bathroom forward. The bed is 5ft 7in wide and it’s the same in the other aft cabin, while the bed in the forward starboard cabin is 5ft 1in wide. The two guest cabins have their own head and sink but share a shower. The forepeaks can also be fitted out, with a berth to starboard and head to port.

Situated forward of the saloon, the roomy galley features counters and storage on three sides

SETTING SAIL

During our sea trial, there was no wind as we cleared port, but we had a residual swell out of the southeast, so we began by testing the engines. Our test boat was equipped with the optional 45hp Yanmars rather than the standard 30hps.

Bali, 4.2, sail, sailing, catamaran, France, Canet, Catana, Asiamarine, Hong Kong, Asia

The upper deck provides plenty of lounging space

I set the speed of both engines to 2,200rpm, which gave a boat speed of just over seven knots with a consumption of 6.4 litres per hour. Counting a safety reserve of 15 per cent, the Bali 4.2 could cruise over 600 miles at this speed.

No matter how hard the Bali is sailed, whether into waves or with them on the quarter, it’s clear that the careful structure, deep hull ribs and integral deck ensure solid rigidity – and the absence of squeaking.

Bali, 4.2, sail, sailing, catamaran, France, Canet, Catana, Asiamarine, Hong Kong, Asia

In the three-cabin layout, the port hull is dedicated to the owner’s suite

Bali, 4.2, sail, sailing, catamaran, France, Canet, Catana, Asiamarine, Hong Kong, Asia

Passage through the water is smooth when sailing, without the nacelle making contact. The wind eventually settled in and the gennaker was unfurled to accompany the main. Despite the swell trying its best to unhook the sails from the wind, the Bali managed to make four knots in the little six-knot breeze, although obviously more wind is needed for the 4.2’s fine hulls to demonstrate their potential.

On the other hand, good passage though the water bodes well for comfortable passage making and we appreciated the direct, rather soft feel to the helm. The self-tacking jib and the double-purchase system for the mainsheet are simple and work perfectly.

Bali, 4.2, sail, sailing, catamaran, France, Canet, Catana, Asiamarine, Hong Kong, Asia

The 4.2 is among Bali’s six sailing models from 40-54ft

For its 42ft length and 23ft-plus beam, the 4.2 offers remarkable space and comfort. It’s almost like being at home, with its huge social areas, spacious galley and comfortable cabins, while a rigid, safe platform and fine hulls will allow for nice sailing in medium airs. www.bali-catamarans.com

Bali 5.4 Sailing Catamaran

A Grand Vision at Sea

Olivier Poncin and the CATANA design team have reached new heights with the Bali 5.4 Open Space , the grand and innovative 54-foot vessel that tops out their extensive line of leisure cruising catamarans. Ergonomic living spaces and an easy flow grace her decks from bow to stern. Aboard the 5.4, you’ll find many of the same features that Bali fans have come to know and love, including an even more expansive flybridge area and an integral forward deck replacing the trampoline. Like other catamarans in the Bali lineup, her CATANA build assures excellent durability and seakeeping qualities . And in spite of her size, she remains easy to sail and manage , even when short-handed.

Beyond the Expected

Among the varied living and lounging spaces aboard the Bali 5.4, you’ll be hard-pressed to choose a favorite. The flybridge remains a crowd-pleaser with cushioned wrap-around seating and large sunbed that together can easily accommodate up to 12 guests . The flow and guest safety throughout is enhanced by wide side decks , both forward and aft doors to access the saloon , and a stairway on either side for access to the flybridge . For the skipper, a comfortable well-equipped helm station provides excellent visibility, and the self-tacking jib and large electric winches assist with handling.

Incomparable Comforts

Bali’s signature tilting-opening door opens the entire back of the yacht to the aft deck , for an entirely open-air experience at the push of a button. The main dining table offers comfortable seating for 12 , with additional bench seating in the saloon and aft cockpit . The saloon is rounded out with an exceptionally well-equipped U-shaped galley , complete with full-sized refrigerator, opening front window for access to the forward cockpit , and a corner navigation station. The outstanding Bali 5.4 catamaran is available in 4-, 5- and 6-cabin ensuite configurations to suit your live-aboard cruising style.
