Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

We take pride in our happy customers

Your team delivered on every mark. You’ve got an amazing broker in Mark Wattrus and I’m confident you will have continued success moving forward together. He was available 24/7 whenever I had questions. We had a great initial visit on the boat and his marketing plan and photos were superb

I bought a yacht that I had never seen. I did this because I trusted my broker Andrew Holland. It was not an easy job for Andrew, as I am an experienced boat builder and owner of previous yachts, but work in West Africa. Imagine how hard it was to communicate what I was looking for. Andrew came up with exactly what I wanted. He dealt with time delays, all my questions at odd hours, and was there for the survey. He reported honestly and professionally. After buying the yacht, I arrived at the boat on a Sunday night, after dark, after travelling from West Africa to the Caribbean, and found it was better than expected. He never pulled punches and made me aware of shortfalls. I expected to spend my one month leave working on the boat, but actually spent less than one week, and was able to spend 3 weeks sailing – wonderful bonus.

Thank you Andrew for putting up with all my questions, all my worries and all my crazy out of the time zone concerns – you were totally professional, but also I know that if and when we meet up, it will be like a friend finally meeting. You are always welcome on Aseka.

— Beverly Cory

Outstanding company with professional subject matter experts. If I were to buy or sell cruising sailboat, particularly a catamaran, Andrew would be my go to broker.

I have been sailing since I was a child and attended Massachusetts Maritime Academy. But when my wife and I began the process of purchasing an ocean cruising/racing catamaran, I realized that this is a world unto itself. Obviously, we needed to find someone knowledgeable to help us make an informed decision. More importantly, we needed someone honest and willing to put our interests before his or her own. I was lucky to work with Phil Berman at The Multihull Company. He repeatedly shunned the fast buck, choosing instead to work the long road to connect us with the “perfect boat”. I would be glad to recommend Phil and his company to anyone planning to purchase or sell a performance sailing machine.

— Eric Boutiette

Andrew Hodgdon was our broker when we bought our 2018 Lagoon 450F in Antigua in April 2922. He provided great service and was very attentive to our needs. We would highly recommend Andrew and the Multihull Company.

We had an amazing week in Greece aboard Toby's catamaran! Toby, our skipper, was with us throughout the week, ensuring we had the best possible experience. He welcomed us warmly and took us to fantastic anchorages, showing us the beauty of the Greek islands. Toby's hospitality and professionalism truly stood out. He not only navigated the catamaran skillfully but also shared incredible stories that added a special charm to our trip. His knowledge of the local area, combined with his enthusiasm, made every moment memorable. The catamaran itself was comfortable and well-maintained, providing a cozy home during our journey. The breathtaking views of the Greek coastline, crystal-clear waters, and charming villages made this trip unforgettable. We are grateful for Toby's guidance, his warmth, and the wonderful experiences he shared with us. If you're looking for a perfect sailing adventure in Greece, we highly recommend Toby as your skipper. Thank you for an unforgettable week, Toby! We look forward to sailing with you again in the future.

Never again - be careful! We booked a three-day trip in September. Due to severe weather conditions (45 knots, Catamaran jumping across the ocean) we got off the boat after 6 hours on day 1 as it was intolerable. Also, given the massive waves, right as we left the habor, the boat's motor got caught in the anchor of another boat, upon which it most likely broke as there was a big bang. Toby dropped us off in Paros and wrote, and I quote him, "I'm still under your hire, so if you want a daytrip...sunset trip before the 20th, I'm here". We asked to use the full third day on the catamaran which was prepaid. Despite agreeing to it, the morning we were meant to get back on the boat, he wrote us that his boat was broken (he discovered it on day 2) and that he simply left the island. He evidently breached the contract by canceling on us and refuses to provide a refund. Completely unacceptable!

This was our first experience with a boat charter and Toby created with his boat an amazing time for us. He knows the area super well and customizes the trip to whatever you need. From our view you cannot spend time better. This was definitely not our last trip with a Catamaran and if we come back to this area then we'll book Toby again...

We had an amazing 4 day trip with captain Toby in his Catamaran « Jumeaux ». Travelling with 2 familles of 4 (including 4 teens), the boat, service (we had a skipper allowing us to enjoy it to the fullest!), the attention to details, the hidden gems (away from the tourist crowd), the interactions/stories were great. Toby was truly pleasant, discreet, experienced captain (we felt safe), knowledgeable of the different islands, etc. Thank you for the trip of a lifetime that we will never forget!

We had the absolute best time with Toby! We struggled to find a shorter charter and on the dates that we needed, so we were so lucky to find Toby. He gave us great recommendations for food, and bays and went above and beyond. We hope to be on his boat again soon one day.

If you’re looking for a one-of-a-kind bespoke sailing trip that takes you to secret spots without the masses, secluded coves and stunning views at all times - look no further than Captain Toby at "sail and explore". We booked a 4 night trip for a group of four and sailed to 4 islands in the Cyclades - Toby customised our schedule to maximise what we could do in the relatively short space of time and was super flexible with pick-up/drop-off and route along the way. In terms of unique experience and value for money - this can't be beaten. The trip: Toby is an incredible skipper who knows the Greek islands like his backyard and will help you plan the sailing trip to find a route that matches everything you’re looking for. What we loved most was that he avoided the crowds and showed us the most incredible spots - most of the time it felt like our own private island/bay. As we anchored he also took us on the little motor boat to explore caves, nearby beaches, and the coastline. Food: Our booking included 2 meals per day on board and a hostess. We were pleasantly surprised, the food was really good and Toby is not just a good skipper but also a great cook! 10/10 recommend having a hostess so need to bother with tidying up. We had dinner on a different island every day, which was a nice way to experience the islands and get off the boat once a day. Boat: The boat offered plenty of space on deck for our group and is nicer and more spacious than it seems in the photos. The cabins are compact, but you’re on a boat after all and you want to spend most of the time outside not in! There are also all the facilities you could need - SUPs, snorkelling gear, scuba gear, fishing gear and bluetooth speakers. Overall - it was a trip of a lifetime and we are already thinking about our next booking! Thank you again Captain Toby and Katerina x

Toby was a great skipper who really adapted to all our needs. He went above and beyond to make sure we had an amazing time on his boat. He had great advice on what to visit and for sure next time we visit Mykonos we will be in touch again !

Everything was just perfect!! Toby is a great host, he was very welllcoming and he treated us his boat was our home. We had really nice time sharing with him and he is a great storytelling. We left our sailing trip in his hands and each decission he made was the right one. He took us to the best places, he put us off the crowded places, and he made the trip in a way that couldnt be more enjoyable. The boat is wonderful its exactly what you see in the pictures. It is really beautiful and comfortable and is perfectly equipped so that you have the best time of your life. I 100% recommend it and will definetely will be back sailing with Toby.

Went end of May as a trip for our 5-year relationship anniversary. On the trip proposed (to what is now my fiancé 😁), at sunset on a perfect private beach Toby found on Polyaigos, near Milos. What to expect: Toby is very casual, straightforward and friendly. He has very varied and interesting past, and had tons of great stories that kept us captivated until late at night. He sometimes cooked (in addition to our hostess Katherina), which was always really good. Also he took a ton of nice pictures and videos of us which was cool. Katherina (our hostess) also made some great Greek food and was always fun to talk to, whether about Greece and Greek culture or just anything else. The catamaran is pretty, in good condition and has a lot of space outside. Interior was good, nothing too luxurious but perfectly adequate and spacious enough for a boat (though note we were only two + two crew). You do need to watch your water consumption a bit as it's from a single 1000L tank. In terms of plans it's best to go with the flow on the day because weather, waves and wind easily change. Toby knows a lot of spots and has a close pulse on how the waves and other conditions will be in different locations. Discuss with him what you're interested in doing, and he can give you recommendations of where to go (and where not to given weather/waves/etc). A nice thing is the range of other activities/gear at no extra charge. We did quite a lot of SUP which was really fun, and a little bit of snorkeling. If you're planning on scuba or kite surfing do check in advance how good your location is for it. We were planning to do some scuba or even try some kite surfing but didn't in the end as it turned out our area wasn't a great location for it. On the other hand, if you do have a nice spot for diving Toby does seem to have a ton of experience, incl. for cave and wreck diving. Overall it was an amazing and memorable trip for us we'll never forget! Some practicals: They bought basic groceries for us two + the two of them (our expense) which ended up around ~€80/d—I believe you can do the shopping yourself if you want more control or are picky. Fuel was something like 80–90L (@ ~€2/L) for 2 days (Ios pick-up, Milos drop-off) but obviously this will vary based on where you go and whether you can sail (we didn't have the right wind for that unfortunately). Also consider going in May or September if you can manage it—less hot, less crowded and less expensive!

We had a great 4-day trip with Toby on board Jumeaux. He is a very skilled and professional skipper, he knows his job and the Cyclades very well. You also feel he will do his best to make sure you enjoy your stay and make the most of it. We also had the chance of having Ilias on board as first mate. Many thanks to our crew members!

We spent an amazing week on the boat with Toby. Wonderful and unique places (typical), very good tavernas.. It was our first time in Greece/Cyclades and we will be back next year for sure. Toby was a perfect host, very professional and a good cooker too ! Back to reality and normal life now :-(( Olivier and Nathalie (and girls)

I went on a very spontaneous trip with Toby - and i really have to say, it is an amazing experience! My expectations were far exceeded - in every single point!!! The catmaran is really well equiped, better than the most boats are - there is a lot of equipment for diving, snorkeling, fishing and also kitesurfing. Toby is a master dive instructor, so you can feel in very good hands going on a dive with him. We were sailing from crete to antiparos, which is a long distance on open sea - i enyoed it a lot and i felt very safe in every minute :-) Toby did everything to make my vacation perfect. I never had a skipper before that was so endeavored to ensure the wellbeing of his guests. Starting with the planning of the trip up to the really tasty food he prepared for me. He is the right guy to cruise through the cyclades - i definately will come back next season - i was a fantastic trip :-) It was a great pleasure to go with this boat and this skipper :-)

Great welcome from Toby and Andreas who took good care of us during our stay. Toby has good experience of the islands and knows all the good places plus he is a good cook 😁

We had a fantastic day with Toby and Sophia. They took us to beautiful beaches only accessible by boat. Service onbord was fabulous. Highly recommend to go on a boat day with them.

Amazing skipper! very professional sailor, very nice person, clean and well taken care of boat. we are 100% taking Toby back next year : )

Outstanding sailing experience with Toby for 4 couples on board Jumeaux, great communication and suggestions for our itinerary and we saw some wonderful secluded places we would not have found on our own! Highly recommended

The Privilege 42 catamaran was Cruising World’s 1996 Boat of the Year.

'Falkor' was built in 1995 and is hull #6 - s he's currently berthed in Chula Vista Marina, San Diego, California USA.

'Falkor', a Privilege 42 catamaran

To our knowledge,  'Falkor'  has never been chartered.   'Falkor'  was originally a four stateroom, four head model; a previous owner repurposed the forward, starboard stateroom and head into a utility room that now houses the genset, watermaker, an Engle AC/DC refrigeration/freezer unit, tools and supplies.

The fin keels of the Privilege 42 were originally layered with Kevlar with the intention of being beached; thus, in theory, you could perform much of your hull work without a haul-out if you can find the right conditions.

'Falkor's Vital Statistics

  • Length: 42'0"
  • Beam: 23'0"
  • Draft: 3'9"
  • Mast Height from Waterline: 62'0"

This is a true live-aboard vessel, equipped for a cruising lifestyle – NOT a day-sailor!  'Falkor' is ready to cruise to Mexico and beyond.  However, it must be said that compared to local real estate prices, this catamaran offers an unparalleled value to a handy, individual, couple or family looking to affordably live in the area and regularly enjoy the greatest views/on-the-water lifestyle possible in San Diego!

'Falkor'  is primed for an electronics overhaul and/or re-powering, but existing systems are in serviceable condition for a competent sailor.

Current Mexico Temporary Import Permit (TIP) will be cancelled at buyer’s request so that the vessel may be registered under a new permit under the buyer’s name.

  • New hull striping and bottom paint in May 2022;
  • Last Survey March 2019;
  • Personal effects not included;
  • Turn-key and sail away!  Can be delivered for offshore delivery.

This is the biggest, best cockpit of any catamaran of this size. It is the main social area of the boat. This is facilitated by the wonderful insulated drinks locker in one of the cockpit lockers.

PROFESSIONAL REPRESENTATION FOR YACHT BUYERS

Not all sellers use a broker, but it is very beneficial for buyers to utilize the knowledge and negotiation expertise of a broker. There are many facets involved in purchasing a yacht, for example; depending on where the boat is registered, there can be obstacles in documentation, surveys and more. Additionally, using a broker is not an extra expense as it should be worked into the price of the boat.
