Series of new Marian apparitions approved in Argentina: Glowing rosaries, miraculous healings, woman's stigmata seen as proof

argentina marian apparition 2020

A series of apparitions by the Virgin Mary, the mother of Jesus Christ, has been approved by a bishop in Argentina as worthy of belief, owing to its "supernational origin," the Catholic News Agency (CNA) reports.

Bishop Hector Cardelli of San Nicolas in Argentina's Buenos Aires province made the announcement on May 22 during a pilgrimage to the Shrine of Our Lady of the Rosary of San Nicolas.

Cardelli said after investigating the Marian apparitions for years, he has come to the conclusion that "Jesus through His Most Holy Mother, the Holy Spirit through his beloved spouse, has desired to lovingly manifest Himself in our diocese."

Michael O'Neil, a miracle researcher and author who runs the website MiracleHunter.com, said the bishop's approval is significant since this means that the messages from the apparitions are not only approved for the faithful to read but also that the events that transpired were in indeed actual miraculous apparitions.

"That puts it on par with Lourdes, Fatima and Guadalupe," O'Neil said.

The apparitions began after some rosaries owned by residents in San Nicolas de los Arroyos in Buenos Aires began to glow inexplicably in 1983.

A wife and mother named Gladys Quiroga de Motta saw these glowing rosaries and began to pray to the Virgin Mary. She said the Virgin Mary appeared to her on Sept. 25 that year, carrying the infant Jesus and wearing a blue gown and veil. She said her figure glowed with light.

Gladys said one month after she saw the Marian apparition, the Virgin Mary again appeared before her and gave her a white rosary, saying, "Receive this Rosary from my hands and keep it forever and ever. You are obedient; I am happy because of it. Rejoice, for God is with you."

The Virgin Mary then asked Gladys to look for a statue that had been blessed by a Pope and was forgotten away in a church. Gladys found the statue on Nov. 27, 1983 in the belfry of the diocesan cathedral.

The statue was that of the Mother of God holding the Child Jesus. It had been brought from Rome after it was blessed by Pope Leo XIII.

Gladys said the statue resembled the Marian apparition she saw.

She said the Virgin Mary visited her 68 times, each time bearing messages from Jesus.

Gladys has shared about 1,800 messages from the Virgin Mary, O'Neil said. Many dwell on peace, repentance, returning to the sacraments, and drawing people closer to Christ. But there are also apocalyptic messages, predicting great turmoil for humanity ahead, O'Neil said.

As further proof of the Marian apparitions' authenticity, Gladys reportedly received the stigmata on her wrists, feet, side and shoulder.

There were also documented miraculous healings related to the apparitions, including the healing of a boy with a brain tumour, according to CNA.

Father René Laurentin, an expert on Marian apparitions, noted the apparitions' messages in his book, "An Appeal from Mary in Argentina."

In one of the messages, the Virgin Mary warned that mankind is "in the process of falling into a progressive self-destruction," saying, "It is up to you to set your eyes and your heart on God," Laurentin said.

argentina marian apparition 2020

I’ve lost track of how many people asked me what Marian Apparition I’d be speaking about this week, but not one person had heard of San Nicolas. They didn’t know that Mary was appearing in Argentina, and most of them asked me if St. Nicholas was appearing or Mary or both. The ignorance of Catholics about this Apparition, my own included, who live outside of South America is nothing less than surreal. It’s a modern Apparition, it’s officially approved, and if we judge it like we do a Broadway musical by the sheer number of performances, then it’s the greatest of all Marian Apparitions because it surpasses all other Apparition sites. But regardless of the sheer number of appearances, we have done well to gather here this morning to praise and thank God for all that he’s been accomplishing by sending his Blessed Mother to the humble housewife, Gladys DeMotta.

San Nicolas is an industrial community located 150 miles from the capital, Buenos Aires. In the 1980s most of it’s 138,000 population depended on the city’s steel plant for their livelihood, including Gladys’ husband, Ricardo. If your memory from geography class is rusty regarding South America, we can look at it from Mary’s perspective. Messages for the modern world first came to Venezuela on the northeastern part of the continent. Ven. Maria Esperanza experienced her first Apparition of the Blessed Mother at Betania, on March 25th, 1976. Then Mary went up to Central America, to war-torn Nicaragua to appear to Bernardo Martinez at Cuapa in 1980. Then the Mother of God traveled to the bottom of the continent on the southeastern side to begin visiting Gladys in Argentina. Then She circled round on the western coast and caught Patricia Talbot in Ecuador by surprise. This teenage girl was intent on the vanities of the world and in pursuing a career as Pachi the fashion model. These Apparitions of Mary in Ecuador as “Protectress of the Faith” went on for a year and a half from 1988 to 1990 and the bishop approved a sanctuary for Mary under that title, although, as far as I can determine, the messages to Pachi have not yet been formally approved. Pachi said the Antichrist was alive in the world, but still very young. Perhaps the local bishop is waiting for his manifestation to verify her amazing messages.

Catholics in continental United States are more likely to know something about Mary’s approved Apparitions in Betania and Cuapa than San Nicolas. After all, the bottom of South America is 5000-7000 miles away, depending on where you live. But Kibeho in Africa and Akita in Japan are much farther, so distance can’t be the only factor. What’s the problem? The answer is the language barrier. What! Thousands of people in the United States speak Spanish. Yes, in certain areas. I studied Spanish when I attended high school in Kansas, but in the 1970s I had to vacation with my family a thousand miles away in the southwestern United States before I met someone who spoke Spanish. In Argentina, I am sure there are many educated people who have learned English in school, but they might have to travel a very great distance before they might meet someone who speaks it. I couldn’t hold on to my Spanish because if you don’t use a language it fades away from memory rather quickly.

There is not one single book currently in print, in English, on the Apparitions in San Nicolas. Maybe there are books in German or Swahili or Japanese, but I doubt it. There are 7 million square miles in South America, much of it rough terrain, and most of the countries in some level of economic hardship. It’s a serious challenge for the Catholics down there to publish the messages in Spanish and Portuguese. Nevertheless, most of the bishops of Argentina are on record for taking part in celebrations at the large sanctuary that was built in San Nicolas at Mary’s request through Gladys. Vatican envoys have been there many times. Couldn’t some prelate get the word out to the rest of the world? If Mary’s messages are “to the world,” doesn’t the world need to know?

Well, not if the messages aren’t to one’s taste, not if they aren’t politically correct, not if they are somewhat old-fashioned because they identify certain things as sin when the modern world wants to acclaim people’s freedom to do whatever they like. We are gathered here this morning to speak about what Mary is doing and saying in the province of Buenos Aires, and to upload some resources to the internet, at least for the English-speaking world, because we’ve been committed to do this systematically for Mary’s Apparitions “to the world.” But research on this particular Apparition was so difficult and challenging, that I feel all the more motivated to untangle and relay to you the truth. I have to thank Google for their automatic translation software which allowed me to navigate many Spanish websites.

So, are the Apparitions in San Nicolas approved or not approved? As of May 2016, all the messages up to that month are fully approved. Let’s repeat that. Yes, the Apparitions at San Nicolas, Argentina are officially approved up until May of 2016. Mary has spoken thousands of times to this lady since 1983, and She is still appearing now in 2017, often several times a day. It’s already thirty-four years. The messages are short, but they fill several volumes.

The city of San Nicolas, a diocesan see, has been through several bishops during Mary’s Apparitions to Gladys, and some of them have been ambiguous in their statements and actions, while others have been passionately in favor of the Apparitions. In September 2016, the former bishop turned seventy-five and was obliged to retire. The newest bishop greatly disturbed the local people by declaring that he wasn’t going to release to the public any more messages. Back in 1990 something similar happened. The messages until that date were officially approved, but subsequent messages were not released by the new bishop until he died or was transferred and another bishop took his place. It is a fact that none of us has a right to a single word of admonition or guidance from the Mother of Jesus, but it is a matter of consternation when a visionary has been extensively investigated, proved as worthy of credence, and everyone knows that at each Apparition Mary usually concludes her words to Gladys with “make this known.” For this reason it’s understandable that Catholics suffer when certain persons in authority seem to be inhibiting the flow of grace from on high.

Since the messages are “to the world,” does the place of delivery really matter? When a local prelate isn’t receptive, can’t heaven instruct the visionaries to please put their house up for sale and move to a friendlier diocese? No, it doesn’t work that way because, although the messages are ultimately “to the world,” they are not generic. They are also “to that particular place in the world.” In her opening Apparition to the world back in 1830, Mary spoke at length to the young Sr. Catherine, of the politics going on in the Communes of Paris. At Pontmain this sweet Mother comforted those devout and fervent Catholics who were anxious about their sons because Prussian soldiers were very near their village. At Knock our Lady stood with the Irish that summer in which the farmers had witnessed another failed potato crop so they were facing another winter of famine. At Green Bay, Wisconsin, Mary admonished the pioneers who were working so hard for the material things in life that they weren’t taking time to instruct their children about heaven and hell. When Mary appeared at Fatima She assured the people of Portugal that they would be spared involvement in World War II if they prayed the Rosary. At Amsterdam Ida saw Mary standing on a globe, with her feet planted on Holland and Germany. Mary expressed her anxiety for these countries which seemed at the time to be firm in the Faith, but in the years ahead would radically drift away. At Cuapa She told the Nicaraguans (engaged in civil war) that they would have no peace if they didn’t make peace. In Rwanda She warned the tribes to forgive their grudges or it would escalate into a genocide. Yes, each place had broader messages for the world, and each place would serve as an object-lesson if the world would take the time to look. But Mary never sees the people of the locality as objects to be used. She is a mother, who understands our particular challenges, our temptations, our crosses. She takes each local situation quite seriously.

The 140,000 people living in San Nicolas de los Arroyos didn’t see it coming in 1983, but a dramatic, unprecedented, economic crisis would hit San Nicolas in the early 1990s. Its official title was the City of Steel but the steel factories would lay off thousands of employees. I don’t know the particulars. Was it greed or the rising price of fuel or was it the price of raw metal? I remember hearing years ago, when I was Turn Sister in Carmel, that the price of steel jumped 800% in one year because China was prospering and so many Chinese were buying cars. Whatever the cause of the employment disaster that stopped income for thousands of families, Mary was there well in advance of this. Perhaps it could have been averted if her calls to conversion had been heeded more deeply. But judging from the immediate welcome of the Apparitions with faith and enthusiasm, and from Gladys herself who accepted to bear the pain and wounds of the stigmata every Friday for years to come, I’m more inclined to think that God sent Mary ahead of the unemployment crisis because God did not want to avert it. Rather God wanted the people to be formed by Mary and prepared to embrace this cross with patience and humility so as to offer their sufferings for the conversion of the world.

So who is Gladys the gladiator? Gladys Herminia Quiroga DeMotta was born on July 1, 1937. In 1983 she was 46 years old and mother of two daughters who would bear her five granddaughters in due time. Her husband, Ricardo, was a crane operator at one of the steel factories. Four or five years later in 1989 he would take an early retirement. They lived in a low-roofed house in the working class area. Gladys had only four years of elementary school, from age seven to eleven. She wore glasses from childhood and reading was always difficult for her. Never in her life had she ever written a letter to anyone. She loved her family and kept the house well, even though her health was never good. Gladys was known as an average Christian, solid, realistic and optimistic, but definitely not very pious and certainly not possessing a theological knowledge of her Catholic Faith. However, in 1976, she had to undergo surgery and hospitalization. She confided her recovery to Mary and promised, in thanksgiving, to go to Mary’s sanctuary of Lujan for five years and perform the penance of walking on her knees from the entrance to the main altar.

Tradition holds that a settler ordered the terracotta image of the Immaculate Conception to be made back in 1630, because he wanted to set up a chapel to reinvigorate the Catholic Faith in his region in Brazil. But when his ship arrived in the port of Buenos Aires, and the travelers stopped to rest, they couldn’t resume their journey because the oxen refused to move. Only after they removed the little crate containing the image of Mary, would the animals pull the cart. The people believed the Virgin wished to remain among them, so they erected a chapel, and eventually a much larger one, in nearby Lujan.

In early September 1983, people began noticing that their rosaries were lighting up. This happened in many homes. It caused quite a sensation. People responded by praying the Rosary either in small groups or individually. On September 24, 1983 Gladys noticed that her own rosary was illuminated. The next day, on Sunday, September 25, Gladys was praying the Rosary when suddenly she saw the Blessed Virgin Mary holding the Child Jesus in her arms. Mother and Child were in an extraordinary light. This Apparition surprised Gladys, but it didn’t frighten her, because Mary was easily recognized in a familiar pose typical of many statues. She was gazing at Gladys with kindness and made a gesture as if to give Gladys her rosary. Gladys, didn’t mention this to anyone. But she felt she should record this remarkable vision so she, who never wrote anything, wrote this down. Later on, when Mary started delivering more and more messages, Gladys displayed the very rare gift of automatic handwriting. She would write rapidly, sometimes with her eyes closed, sometimes without knowing what she was writing. I haven’t come across this in any modern Apparition, however, it isn’t rare in the occult world. Blessed Anne of St. Bartholomew used to watch St. Teresa of Avila writing her books on prayer late at night when the other nuns had gone to bed. Teresa would only dip her pen once into the inkwell and then cover pages very quickly, far more quickly than people can normally write.

The Blessed Virgin returned again several times. Gladys didn’t know what to make of this. On October 12th she went to speak about it to her parish priest Father Carlos Perez, pastor of the city’s cathedral. He listened attentively and took her seriously. He advised her to pray, and comforted her by saying that if they were things of God, it would be for the good of all. But he barely knew this woman and didn’t really know what to make of it either. As the years unfolded and Mary asked for a large sanctuary where the people could come and ask for her intercession, this same Father Carlos Perez would become rector of the new sanctuary. To this day, thirty-four years later, he remains the spiritual director of Gladys, and the Pastoral Advisor of everything related to the ever-growing devotion of the Virgin of the Rosary as Mary will say She wants for her title. Gladys turns 80 years old this year. I presume Fr. Perez is a bit younger. It’s surely been a delicate business to help this woman advance in her spiritual life as Mary asked her for more sufferings, such as the wounds of the stigmata, not to mention the tricky business of dealing with a string of bishops who would show more or less enthusiasm for the people’s devotion to Mary.

When the wounds of the stigmata began to appear, Gladys was examined by numerous medical professionalists. At first, they were not outwardly visible, just an inflammation of the skin, then the feeling of irritation, then piercing pain, then more exterior signs. To paraphrase Dr. Telechea, a cardiologist: “Among the various marks, the most impressive are the stigmata of the wrists. There is this peculiarity: in one wrist there is just one wound but in the other wrist there are two points as if it had been nailed twice. This coincides with the Shroud of Turin. Evidently Jesus was nailed twice in one hand because they missed the right space. The nail has to lodge between certain wrist bones or the weight of the body will tear away. On Thursday a red mark develops; on Friday the wounds bleed; on Saturdays they begin to scab over, and by Monday the skin is back to normal.” If I understand correctly, this usually happens in the Friday of Lent, but sometimes it can begin as early as Christmas. No physician has discovered any medical explanation for the phenomenon.

It’s almost impossible to find pictures of Gladys on the internet. She does not want photos taken of herself. Gladys wants all attention to be focused on God and the Blessed Virgin. The people love her very much and respect her wishes. Gladys never gives interviews to journalists. She shuns the limelight. Most pilgrims don’t know what she looks like and she can mingle in the crowd of worshipers at the shrine without even being noticed. But everyone knows where she lives, only a third of a mile from the great sanctuary. They don’t knock on the door, but slide notes through the mail slot. They know that she spends her time praying for the pilgrims and for the world. Of course, when bishops have resisted publishing Mary’s messages it makes her sad, but she’s never been rebellious or spoken against those who represent authority in the Church. Her behavior has always been humble and exemplary. She especially won the heart and the confidence of Bishop Hector Sabatino Cardelli.

Bishop Fortunato Antonio Rossi, 1977-1983

He was named archbishop and left San Nicolas when the Apparitions to Gladys had barely started

Bishop Domingo Salvador Castagna, 1984-1994

He could hardly deny the extraordinary signs and the enthusiasm of the people. He permitted the messages to be published and the sanctuary to be built, but he would not officially approve the messages. In fact, in 1990 he ceased to give permission for the messages to be published. I have not read all the messages, let alone evaluated them. Did the content become more severe, the warnings more dire? Or did his confreres get to him and make him feel silly for paying attention to private revelations? I have no idea what happened. Happily he too was named archbishop and he left the diocese of San Nicolas.

Bishop Mario Luis Bautista Maulion, 1995-2003

This bishop was not friendly to the Apparitions. I don’t know the details except that the Vatican was very satisfied with the happenings at the shrine and Pope John Paul expressed his approval. Did the pope deliberately name this man as archbishop so that he would leave the diocese of San Nicolas? In any case, the next man chosen by Pope St. John Paul would defend the messages courageously.

Bishop Hector Sabatino Cardelli, 2004-September 21, 2016 (his 75th birthday)

Bishop Cardelli immediately resumed the publication of the messages, giving joy to the people. A new congregation of Sisters began to serve Mary’s sanctuary and the Bishop entrusted the messages to these nuns, who made them available for free on the internet (in Spanish) and evidently got them printed into books also. On Trinity Sunday, May 22, 2016 a few months before his mandatory retirement, Bishop Cardelli formally, officially approved all the messages from 1983 through 2016. In Church law, the local bishop has full and complete jurisdiction as judge over the authenticity of private revelations in his territory. When a bishop issues a negative statement, a succeeding bishop can reopen the case to examine the evidence again. But when a bishop issues a positive statement that decision cannot be revoked by any subsequent bishop.

Dear Brother Bishops:

Having served twelve years as pastor of the flock of San Nicolas and having followed this Marian event with faith and responsibility, I have known it from the beginning and have permitted the devotion to grow in my diocese. I worked in consultation with experts and witnesses being fully aware of my serious duty to monitor or intervene, because this rests primarily with the local ordinary. I judged the facts according to two criteria: positive and negative. I discerned on three criteria in specific, namely: Is the event only a natural occurrence? Can this be work of the enemy? Is it’s origin supernatural? The answers to these questions left me absolutely certain that this phenomenon bears the true and positive fruit that exceed mere human action. On the occasion of the Jubilee of Mercy of the pilgrims from the Diocese, I announce this valid decision for the flock which I guide and accompany. I present the book entitled “The Spiritual School of Santa Maria del Rosario de San Nicolas” which highlights the most important teachings in the messages She gives to us for our commitment to everything She tells us because She is the culmination of revelation. I promulgate this today during the Mass for the pilgrims at the Marian sanctuary and celebrating this jubilee on the seventh anniversary of Mary’s coronation at this sanctuary. As diocesan bishop entitled to this decision, motivated by moral certainty, good intent and hope; fulfilling the requirements suggested by the Holy See; seeking the greater glory of God and of our Church; calling on the name of God Almighty, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, the name of Mary of the Rosary of San Nicolas, and her spouse St. Joseph, I acknowledge the supernatural character of these happy events brought to us from God to his favored daughter (Gladys) through our loving Mother Mary, the spouse of the Holy Spirit to our diocese.

Hector Sabatino Cardelli, Bishop of San Nicolas

A few months later on September 21, 2016 Bishop Cardelli was succeeded by Bishop Hugo Norberto Santiago. I will attempt to quote or paraphrase for you from a Spanish Argentine newspaper article which seems to take its information from the Italian newspaper “La Stampa” which is famous for inside news from the Vatican. This is an article dated March 15, 2017:

The local bishop, Hugo Santiago, has just announced the cessation of the publication of the messages that this seer attributes to Mary. The decision, endorsed by the Vatican, aims to divert attention from private revelations and to focus attention on the message of Jesus. The shrine at San Nicolas will continue to function, the popular religiosity will remain intact. When the diocese of San Nicolas de los Arroyos communicated the new decision, a heated debate broke out (the article refers the reader to a Facebook link five days before March 10, 2017). On Monday March 13th, Bishop Santiago responded with a video posted on the internet.”I consulted Rome on the possibility of ending the dissemination of the messages of Mrs. Gladys DeMotta as referencing the Virgin Mary and the Vatican answered me affirmatively that this was most convenient for the Marian faith in Our Lady of the Rosario de San Nicolas.” In 1983, this woman began to receive the words of the Virgin, revelations which continue to the present. The local bishop at that time, Domingo Salvador Castagna, 1984-1994, after consultation with Pope John Paul II, discerned that these messages were “worthy of faith.” He authorized the construction of a sanctuary. However, in 1990, after consulting theologians and psychologists, he decided to end the publication of further messages of Mrs. Gladys DeMotta as referencing the source as the Virgin. He considered that the collection thus far was sufficient, and to avoid the risk that subsequent messages be misrepresented. For example it could easily happen over time that Gladys might put them forward as coming from the Virgin, rather than her prayerful reflections, so that what had previously been worthy of faith might not be thenceforth. The Bishop went on to say that he will continue to receive and keep her incoming messages in the archives of the bishopric so that, after Mrs. DeMotta and he are no longer on this earth–they can be analyzed by the Church, because the Church cannot canonize anyone in life. He asked that the monthly novena held in the sanctuary would be thenceforth inspired, not by the messages coming to San Nicolas, but solely by the words of the Virgin at the wedding of Cana: “Do whatever He tells you,” as prayers are offered for the intentions of the Pope each month. The people should reflect only on some passage of the Bible. “Mary is not silent; She continues speaking in the Sacred Scriptures and taking us to Jesus.”

The journalist of La Stampa (or is it the Argentine journalist?) make the curious observation:

Throughout the video, Bishop Santiago read from a prepared document. He appeared concerned to adhere, word for word, to this document. So it was very striking that he never attributed any messages of the seer to the Virgin, even involuntarily. He always spoke of them as “words referring to the Virgin.”

You can only imagine how badly this divided the local people about the lid he has dropped on Gladys and the messages that she continues to receive daily from Mary. They know this because Gladys tells the rector of the sanctuary, and people ask him point blank. The sanctuary, popularly called El Campito (the Land, or the Holy Land), is visited by more than 140,000 faithful each month. That is, until an arson set fire to it. I’m quoting an internet article again:

On Monday morning, March 2, the Bishop of San Nicolas de los Arroyos, Monsignor Hugo Santiago, gave a press conference in which he addressed different topics, including the reconstruction of the sanctuary, which was destroyed a month previously by an intentional fire that is under current investigation. They have one person detained and another person might be his accomplice, but the lawyer insists that there is insufficient evidence to hold them accountable.

The article relates how they are still collecting the pieces among the ashes. They recovered fragments of certain pictures and statues. The altar was charred. Virtually every thing wooden burned. I couldn’t figure out from the article whether the famous image of the Virgin of the Rosary survived the flames. The bishops and the priests with him urge the people to forgive the arsons and to be generous in rebuilding. But the economy is in a bad way, not as bad as Venezuela, but certainly bad. What are the chances that the people will rebuild it quickly when they fear that arsons will just set it on fire again? And did someone in the Bishop’s charge do the deed to discourage the so-called foolish superstition of listening to prophetic warnings from heaven?

So the sudden interruption of approval of ongoing messages mirrors what just happened at Medjugorje. Just last week, on May 25, 2017, the Vatican-based Ruini Commission, named for Cardinal Camillo Ruini, released their report. They decided to split the Apparitions into two time periods. They officially approved the first-time period, namely the first seven Apparitions at Medjugorje. Pope Francis said “Good, good, good. The Ruini report is very, very good.” Since Bishop Santiago had consulted the Vatican on the Apparitions at San Nicolas, he was evidently encouraged to do the same thing, to hold back approval of ongoing Apparitions for an indefinite time-period, preferably after all the visionaries are dead and no more messages will be forthcoming.

The long series of Apparitions at Amsterdam have ceased and Ida Peerdeman went to her reward, But the three sites of San Nicolas, Medjugorje and Ohio bear amazing similarities in that all three began in the 1980s and have continued daily until the present. But unlike the others, Ohio has been totally ignored by the American hierarchy as if it simply isn’t happening, as if thousands and thousands of people don’t travel to this humble farm location to witness miraculous phenomenon and to pray. If you are curious check out www.holylove.org. I know a priest in the southern United States and a family in the northern United States who have personally made the journey, and they are totally convinced that what is happening is authentic. I’ve personally followed the messages for years and have never seen the slightest doctrinal error. The sole visionary, Maureen Sweeney reminds me of Gladys. She mingles humbly with the crowd and people don’t even realize that she’s the seer. Maureen suffers, but she doesn’t have the stigmta.

Since there no English translations in print, I scanned in all I can find and will be uploading it to the internet as soon as I can find time to edit it better. In the meantime I will read aloud for you here some samples from the messages. But first I want to comment on the main themes.

The Apparitions began with glowing rosaries. Then Mary always appears to Gladys in a certain way, but Gladys doesn’t think much about it until Mary asks her to find a statue that had been blessed by a Pope and was forgotten in a church. She tells this to her director and within a couple of months Mary tells her to look in the belfry of the city’s cathedral, where it had been left because it had been damaged and not restored. Father Perez, rector of the cathedral and Gladys’ confessor, wanted to find out if the image that was deteriorated in the bell tower, corresponded with the description of Gladys. On Nov. 27, 1983, feast of the Miraculous Medal, he called the visionary and took her to the bell tower. Gladys immediately recognized the image of the Apparitions, but it was missing one hand and the rosary. At that same moment the Blessed Mother appeared to her in front of the image and said to Gladys: “They have forgotten me, but I have emerged. I want my sanctuary to be on the shore of the Parana; stay firm. Glory to the highest Father.”The image was eventually moved from the cathedral to be nearer to a greater public, for the benefit of the Diocese and of all Argentina. Father Perez had the image repaired and put a new rosary in her hand and in the hand the Infant. Constant gatherings of large crowds convened in front of the image of Our Lady of the Rosary.

The statue had been brought from Rome after it was blessed by Leo XIII, the great pope of the Rosary. He issued an encyclical on the Rosary nearly every year of his long pontificate. San Nicolas was originally part of the larger diocese of Rosario, named for the Virgin of the Rosary. But Mary isn’t satisfied with just the Rosary. Over in Nicaragua She is telling Bernardino Martinez that She wants them to pause at each decade of the Rosary and read and meditate on Scripture. And, as in Nicaragua She tells Pachi in Ecuador that the people shouldn’t rush through the Our Fathers and Hail Mary’s but pray the words meaningfully. Here in Argentina, Mary starts dropping scripture references into her messages. Nearly every day She’ll say a few lines and then say Read such and such Book of the Bible, chapter x, verses y and z. Gladys can barely read. She certainly can’t guide people to passages in the Bible. This starts a big craze in Argentina, getting Catholics interested in the Word of God.

The messages, some of them from Jesus, stress Mary’s role in our salvation, as “The Woman Clothed With the Sun”, “The New Eve”, and the “New Ark of the Covenant.” She states that her “New Sanctuary” will be her dwelling place on earth, and defines that this is the time of fulfillment of her role of leading all her children of the world back to her Son. But it’s not so much the physical buildings, but the hearts of the people where She wants God to dwell.

Since I haven’t read the entire collection as many of the messages are still in Spanish, I don’t know if it’s verified in the words of Mary, but the theme of reparation and victimhood for sin is obviously very strong because of Gladys who received the wounds of the stigmata. It’s true that most of the modern visionaries bore sufferings patiently from St. Bernadette and her illnesses to the children of Fatima and their heroic penances to Sr. Agnes at Akita who suffered the cross of being deaf for years. But only three of the modern visionaries bore the stigmata: Barbara at Marienfried, Maria Esperanza at Venezuela and

Melanie of LaSalette. Yet Barbara asked for this to be taken away, Maria Esperanza only suffered on Good Fridays and Melanie was never a public figure so that few people were aware of her hidden sufferings. Gladys DeMotta is a totally unique visionary in this regard. All the local people know about her heroic sufferings and she is a model to everyone, which helped people to bear poverty and unemployment with a good spirit.

“The Bishop could verify all this (…).” On Good Friday she is crucified on the bed (…). She suffers terrible pains (…).” Later she also had a wound with the form of a cross in the chest (…). On Fridays there appear different types of flagellations but in a partial form, not as Christ’s flagellation. Then, her back aches and one sees, for example, that she has like a lash (whipping) (…).” Much pain, much anguish, much sadness (…).”

According to the description of doctors Pellicciotta and Telechea, the thumbs of Gladys are contracted when the wrists are ulcered. The doctors also analyzed the blood of the wounds and their observations determined the nonexistence of artificial dye or other products. The stigmata of the wrists appeared during Advent and Lent; but the blood starts to flow on Good Fridays. Stigmata of the feet only appear on Good Fridays. They begin towards 3pm. According to Sister Marta “Gladys suffers much more by the pain that men cause to the hearts of Jesus and Mary (and that she sees) than by the pains of the stigmata which give her the grace of being united to the sufferings of Jesus in the Cross.” Some years the stigmatization diminishes in grade.

Father Perez explains the sense of these signs and says: “When there are extraordinary graces they do not need to take place indefinitely. God produces them when He wants and also they retire when God wants. At the present moment (…), they gradually tend to be more scattered (…). That is to say that this can last indefinitely or it may be possible that it does not last. That does not affect at all the sense that these events have (…) which are that the Lord, through a participation in the sufferings of the Passion makes us understand the importance that every Christian participate freely, in assuming the part of the Passion of Christ that corresponds to him. Stigmas are a visible exteriorization of this inner content which is the deepest one”.

“The Blessed Virgin Herself proposed me to fast”, And she obediently began with a prolonged fasting that worried her family during the first times and greatly astonished the doctors.

On January 11th, 1989, Gladys received one of the few messages where fasting is mentioned:

My Daughter: Yesterday in Lourdes, today here, always the Mother in search of Her children. Prayer, fasting, penitence and specially conversion, that is what I request from them. The souls will be saved if they go to the Lord, if they open to the Lord. Peace is lacking in many souls; if the soul looks for Peace you will find God. Amen. Amen. Say this to all your brothers.

Dr Pellicciotta reported that “Gladys had been making prolonged fastings of forty days . Her husband was very worried. I weighed her every day. She only took liquids, I think that some fruit juices and nothing else. In forty days of fasting she should have had to lose much weight.”(She only lost one and a half kilos-3 pounds) According to Dr. Telechea “in forty days of fasting, scientifically, a normal person would lose weight and would feel debilitated (…). She only lost one kilo and a half and kept a normal vitality (…). the first years we did a good control of Gladys during the forty days (…) we monitored her weight and blood pressure every day. We have monitored her very closely. Besides these prolonged fastings, Gladys told her doctors that she normally fasts on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays every week. The Blessed Virgin told her to eat only bread without yeast, and liquids with sugar. Gladys does not like that bread, so she only drinks water, tea, maté, coffee and orange juice. She says that when she is fasting she sleeps well and is not hungry. She cooks for her family normally but she looses the sense of smell, which she recovers the day she finishes the fast. That day she recovers the smell, feels hungry again and eats normally.

On December 6th, 1983, the Blessed Virgin clarified the meaning of the fasting:

“Blessed be the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit; through the Most Holy Trinity you will find peace and Eternal Life. Go on fasting; after the third day, you will eat: fasting for you is not penitence but spiritual preparation that the Lord asks you.”(PM 30)

On December 10th 1983 the Blessed Mother tells Gladys:

“My daughter: Go on fasting today; pray this day so that the Lord enlightens men; this life is completely materialist but in heaven it is not so: the Almighty leads your lives today and for ever. Please the Lord by doing what He asks from you. Amen.” (No. PM 35) “Today’s fasting is dedicated to your Father. I shall put words in your mouth. The person who is going to talk with you will listen attentively” (this referred to an interview she had with the new Bishop, Mons. Rossi.

The Strong Prophetic Content of the Messages

Among the messages the Virgin points out that most of humanity has been left to pollute and as a result, the world is under a “warning.” The messages given to Gladys Quiroga DeMotta are among the strongest that have been approved by the official Church. Mary exhorts the faithful to spread the word of judgment, the justice of God.

It is his duty to teach the righteousness of the Almighty, and blessed is he who learns.” Children must be warned, the plague is great. At this moment all humanity hangs in the balance. My children, the person without meaning is dead, although alive, because he does not fear the justice of God, nor fears the fulfillment of his commandments. He wants to ignore the fact that the day of the Lord and his judgment will come. Blessed are those who fear the judgment of God. These are the hours, when prayer and visits to the Blessed Sacrament, should be especially fervent. Humanity is living very dramatic moments.

Gladys says that she viewed the world in two parts, with one part representing those whose souls are being ‘destroyed’, especially through an obsession with wealth.

“A large part of the world is far from God,” the Virgin told Gladys in more than 1,900 messages. They are ahead in all that is materialism, and they do not advance in what is more important, in the knowledge of the Word of God. Daughter, the land is inhabited, but it seems uninhabited A great darkness hangs over her. There is a warning from God to the world Those who remain in the Lord have nothing to fear, but those who deny them are condemned. Two-thirds of the world is lost and the other part must pray and repair so that the Lord will have mercy. My dear daughter, there is darkness and loss all over the world. My children in the great cities of the world cultivate atheism and total indifference to God. The devil wants to have total dominion over the earth. He wants to destroy. The earth is in great danger.

In what can only be called harsh warnings, the Virgin emphasized materialism and pride in all its manifestations.

Do not be too ambitious, because wanting too much can make them forget that the only true ambition they must have is to enter the Kingdom of God. Always try to remember this, for it is the only thing that matters to the Lord. Not everything is corrupt in the world, but a large part is. This great part is the one that must be totally and completely renewed, since they despise God. They are the enemies of God. They are being used by the devil with cunning and very coldly. Break the bonds with the materialistic world in which they live, and unite with the Lord.

Reaffirming messages from elsewhere, the Virgin told Gladys in 1988 that

“the weapon that has the greatest influence against evil is to recite the Rosary.”

And She stressed that for those who pray is not a time of anguish, but “hope, peace and strength.”

The coming of the Lord is imminent, and as the Scripture says, no one knows the day or the hour, but it will be, and certainly by that time the soul of the Christians must be prepared. These are the hours when prayer should be fervent. Do not you know that prayer is a shield against evil? It is not that humanity is abandoned by God, but that God is abandoned by mankind. While there is no more detail about what is meant by a “great plague,” the messages of call to purification are abundant in the Blessed Mother. I say this for all my children: God does not want you to humble yourself before the enemy. He does not want them to be destroyed by him, but to face him. Fear nothing, for the Lord goes before every battle. Do not worry; Be strong because they have the presence of the Almighty. Daughter, the prince of evil pours his poison today with all his strength, because he is worried that his reign is over; its end is near; little is left for him. My daughter, the evil one triumphs now, it is true, but it is a victory that will have a short duration. Hurry up because time is running out.

Jesus also appears to the visionary

On November 17th 1983 He says to Gladys: “glorious days await you. The harvest will be great, you will gather it.” Although most of the messages are of a hopeful and consoling tone, they do not lack a prophetical and eschatological tint.

As a sample let us mention the one of January 8th 1984:

At this moment the humanity is suspended from a thin thread. If that thread breaks many will be the ones that do not have salvation. For that reason i call to reflection. Hurry up because the time is finishing. There will be no place for those who are late in coming. The lord wants that everybody enjoy his kingdom. To those that are far from him, i say: come close, come close; Jesus Christ is within reach of your hand. Proclaim it. Amen.

From Our Lady:

You were called to be bearer of peace so that the urgent call of Jesus Christ is known for the conversion of man. I am worried about the entire world. Remember that only the lord will save you. Proclaim this.

And Our Lady asks Gladys to read Jonah 4:8-9. The Biblical text of Jonas says:

And should not I pity Nineveh, that great city, in which there are more than a hundred and twenty thousand persons who do not know their right hand from their left, and also much cattle?”

Peculiarly that is the population of the city of Saint Nicholas, Argentina!

July 26 #1230

I speak from this city, to all peoples, and you, my daughter, are the one chosen by me to transmit to all your brethren, the hope in Christ Jesus. From my mouth you listen to the pain I feel for those who are far from God: you also know of my Motherly anxiety. I have come to ask from my children, and to give to my children. Amen. Amen.

August 14 #1,239

Ah, my daughter, how foolish man is! How little he understands and even less obeys, the Lord! They are only attached to what is earthly and they forget the promise made by God, about his Kingdom. This is what the Mother says: Do not let the nourishment that I send you escape; only with this will you live. May your brethren meditate. Amen. Amen.
Read: Nahum 1:3. Yahweh is slow to anger and of great might, and Yahweh will by no means clear the guilty. His way is in whirlwind and storm, and the clouds are the dust of his feet.

October 7 #1,272

On this day, I address all my children: offer your prayer to the Mother, contemplating each mystery of the Holy Rosary.

As time goes by, I am accustoming you to prayer, making you love prayer and helping you to discover that prayer is the real way to defend yourselves against the enemy. Pray, then, since I am the:

Mother of prayer, Mother of contemplation, Mother of the defenseless, Mother of the desolate, Mother of those who are lost, Mother of Christians, Mother of the Holy Rosary. May the Lord be praised!

September 15 #285

Beloved children, appreciate the Holy Mass. Every good Christian ought to participate in the Sacred Supper of the Holy Mass every day, or at least once a week.

At that moment my adored Son communicates the Father’s love and eternal salvation. It is then that Christ Jesus offers Himself, in absolute obedience and full trust to God the Father.

You must imitate this great example. I invite you to make it a duty of great love for the Lord to receive Communion.

To those who consecrate themselves:

offer yourselves to the Lord with love. Pray the Holy Rosary with Christian fervor, every day. Improve your life, enriching it spiritually. My children, this is what your Mother asks you. May you be blessed in the obedience to the Lord. Glory be to heaven.

August 23 #1,243

I see Jesus. He says to me:

May Christians not hide from the Shepherd and Savior of souls, lest because of hiding, they be lost.

November 22 #381

Many of my children are clumsy, they do not know how to walk alone. They have impenetrable hearts and, without knowing, they are attempting against their own lives. They have fallen into sin. I tell you, you are in a quagmire. Do not advance any further, you are in danger of death. Turn back, for you have salvation; Christ wants to save you. Praise be to the Lord.

Typical closing praise

Glory be to the Everlasting! Glory be to the Lord! Praise be to Heaven! Glory be to the Savior! Glory to the Most High!

Typical closing instruction

Make known the message of the Mother of God. Propagate it. Make it known. Make My words known in the whole world.

Typical Scripture instruction

Read: book chapter verse

Typical post 1990

Do not adore idols. Adore the Lord! Pray for the little ones, for those defenseless children who, in their innocence can fall into cruel hands, to take away the purity of the soul and the heart

April 3, 2015

I am in ecstasy. I feel that I rise, now I hear the Voice of Jesus, who says to me: My daughter, every whip I was whipped with, was made with strips of leather and spikes on the tips; In every lash, they took pieces of my Flesh. Child, no one on Earth knows my wounds, more than you, nobody knows of my Blood shed like you; No one has seen my Body on the Cross, as you have seen. He shows me a whip and says: I show you this so that men will believe that you see me. You know much about me, my daughter. Today you are being judged by some, but the only one who Judge with Justice, it is me.

Sept 19, 2015

My daughter, men should pray, to be on guard against Satan. They must pray, to resist evil inclinations toward sin; They must pray, so as not to lose the good habits of every Christian. Perfect must be the working and perfect must be the union of the Christian with Christ. Glory to the Most High. You must propagate this.

Dec. 6, 1995

My glance rests upon you, my children, with the tenderness of a heavenly Mother. Live always in my Heart, otherwise you will live in grave danger. Blessed be the Lord. Make it known.

Nov. 18, 1988

Daughter, the night is already upon the world. There are many slaves of the enemy. I say to my children, Do not wait any longer. Reform! for you will not avoid the Justice of God. Let your prayer be intense these days. Glory to the Most High. Let everyone know the word of this Mother.
Read 2 Peter 3:13-17. ( we wait for new heavens and a new earth. . .)

On December 2nd 1984 the Virgin requests Gladys that a medal be coined:

“You must have a medal coined with my image of the advocation of Mary of the Rosary of Saint Nicholas and on the back side, the Holy Trinity with seven stars “We know well this medal, that has had the amplest diffusion: On one side, it has the image of Our Lady of the Rosary of Saint Nicholas, the advocation that expresses its bond with the city of Saint Nicholas. On the other side, there is a triangle, the symbol of the Trinity, surrounded by seven stars, and the Blessed Virgin clarifies, on September 25th 1985 (second anniversary of the first Apparitions): “My Daughter: I tell you the meaning of the seven stars: they represent the seven graces that my Son Jesus Christ will grant to those who wear it on their breast. Praised be the Lord.”

The Scapular

On March 5th 1986, our Blessed Mother requested Gladys that a Scapular be made.

Dear daughter: Please see to it that a Scapular is made. It must be white, since that is the symbol of purity. My image will be light blue and pink. This Scapular will have to be destined to those physically or mentally afflicted and it will be worn by those who really feel the need in their hearts, because with the Scapular goes the promise to pray to Mary of the Rosary. This is an urgent request. Amen. Amen.”

The following is the text of the decree of the Bishop of St. Nicholas:

“Considering that the use of the Scapular, accompanied by a suitable catechesis, will benefit the believers, and as a symbol of the Protection of the Mother of the Lord, as a defense against all evils and as an aid for the physical and spiritual health, it grants approval for the Scapular of Mary of the Rosary, not considering that a solemn imposition is necessary, and that it will be enough that it is blessed by a priest, with the habitual formula.” The Scapular is destined to those who want to receive it, and accept the spiritual and physical benefits, that by the intercession of the Virgin of the Rosary of St. Nicholas, the Lord wants to grant to them; this desire to wear it, will imply the commitment to pray to Mary, listen to the Word of the Son, receive the Sacraments of the Church, and live according to the exigencies of the Christian life”.

The Water of the Sanctuary

Three dreams and one inner locution of Gladys, the visionary, induced to the search of the water of the Sanctuary, which was finally found when, on June 4th 1991, the definitive perforation was begun. The first dream on the existence of the water was on August 3rd 1984. The following is its textual writing:

This morning I woke up from a dream. I saw much people who worked in “El Campito” (the Land of Mary). They were making the foundations for the Sanctuary. They were digging a well in the middle of the foreground, because I had told them that from there it was going to sprout water, in the place where it had been the shrub (the one where the ray of light had fallen down).” This morning, when the Virgin spoke to me, I asked Her what did that dream mean and She said to me: “Many dreams are realities, and this dream will become a reality.” And She smiled.”

More than five years passed when, on November 30th 1989, Gladys had the second dream about the water, which she narrated as follows:

“Again I dreamed about the water of the Sanctuary. This time I saw it around the temple and it ran on channels. There would be a meter of distance between the channels and the Sanctuary. The water was very clear. I saw again the Most Blessed Virgin alone, as the Immaculate, and heard that She said to me: “Great is the blessing on your town: it’s the blessing of God for his children.”

Two days later, while Gladys was talking about the subject of the water, she strongly felt in her interior, as a locution, the Biblical quotation of prophet Ezekiel, 47:1:

Then he (the Lord) brought me back to the door of the temple; and behold, water was issuing from below the threshold of the temple toward the east (for the temple faced the east); and the water was flowing down from below the south end of the threshold of the temple, south of the altar.”

The third dream took place on January 29th 1990, and Gladys related it as follows:

I dreamed that I saw a source with very crystalline water. The Blessed Virgin called it: “Gihon”, thus connecting it to the river in paradise which the Hebrews believed ran beneath Jerusalem. David ordered Solomon to be anointed at the Gihon. Under the direction of Father Perez, a geologist, a priest and two architects supervised various perforations, and on June 4th 1991, at the place where the ray of light had descended water was found at a depth of 150 feet. When first extracting the water, all the Sanctuary was impregnated with a strong scent of roses. The water is distributed to pilgrims who have experienced the healing from a variety of illnesses. Let us conclude with the Virgin, “Glory be to God!”

The Ultimate Guide to Marian Apparitions

by Shelby Mayer | May 30, 2020 | Discovery | 36 comments

argentina marian apparition 2020

How familiar are you with the twenty-six Church-approved Marian Apparitions?

We’ve compiled information on all of the Marian apparitions within the Catholic Church to make this ultimate guide.

Do you want to:

  • Understand what a Marian Apparition is?
  • Learn the process the Church uses to approve them?
  • Grow in your knowledge of the twenty-six Marian apparitions in the Catholic Church?
  • Learn the difference between “bishop-approved” and “Vatican-recognized” apparitions?
  • Successfully help others understand the importance of Marian Apparitions?

If so, you came to the right place!

argentina marian apparition 2020

Marian apparitions are known as appearances of the Blessed Virgin Mary , coming down from heaven to earth. These appearances are often paired with some type of message Our Lady wants to communicate, and depending on the nature of her visit, can be anywhere from one short appearance to several over the course of years. There is always at least one witness to an apparition, and it is not uncommon for the witness to later become a saint or holy figure within the Church.

As one of our authors points out , “These are moments when the Blessed Virgin Mary appears to us here on earth, letting us know that her prayers for us are being offered to God.” For an apparition to be worthy of belief and devotion within the Catholic Church, it must be approved by the bishop of the area where the apparition took place. This approval assures the presence of God and the forces of heaven within the appearance, and protects the community of the faithful from influences that may be contrary to the Faith.

Over the course of Church history , there have been many reports and accusations of Marian apparitions. However, the twenty-six that have been approved as authentic and worthy of belief are spread all across the globe from Japan, to Wisconsin, to Egypt.

The Church is very careful when it comes to approving and recognizing Marian apparitions. In fact, for the benefit of the bishops, Church officials, and the faithful, the Vatican released a set of guidelines to the public on approving apparitions and other revelations . Within the document, the Church lays out three steps in discerning the authenticity of an apparition:

1. Firstly, the question of whether the apparition and revelations given during the appearance is positive or negative is addressed.

Positive apparitions follow general criteria such as:

  • Holding great probability of factual content after thorough investigation
  • Showing honesty of moral values, docility to Church authority, and capacity of returning to a normal regimen of the Faith.

On the contrary, negative apparitions show the following:

  • Errors concerning the nature of the apparition
  • Errors concerning God, Mary, the saints, and/or Church teaching
  • Evidence of the apparition being directly aimed towards gaining some type of profit
  • The presence of grave immoral acts that were committed at the time of the apparition
  • Psychological complications regarding the witness of the apparition.

2. Secondly, if the apparition proves to be of a positive nature, the Church will go forward in allowing some type of public devotion to be celebrated.

3. Lastly, the authorities at hand decide what level of authenticity and supernatural character the apparition displays, keeping in mind the possible offspring of ideas that could come from it.

The document also notes that overall, the duty of approving apparitions first falls on the bishop of the diocese in which the apparition occurred. If the bishop has a hard time discerning the authenticity of the apparitions or revelations for any reason, the investigation can be passed up through Church authority. The Vatican can call for investigations to be had under its authority, however we usually only see this in cases of either urgency or strong contraried opinion. If the bishop approves an apparition, it is worthy of admiration and devotion and the site of the apparition is worthy of pilgrimage.

Having the Vatican recognize the existence of an apparition is an extra bonus to this, solidifying the presence of heavenly intervention. While the Vatican-acknowledged apparitions do tend to be more widely known and celebrated, their presence does not make bishop-approved apparitions any less significant or important.

Marian apparitions are another beautiful way Mary connects us to her Son, Jesus Christ . While on earth, the Virgin Mary’s ministry was completely dedicated to reflecting the love, joy, and peace that comes from following her son, and that ministry doesn’t stop now that she has been assumed into heaven. Many saints have spoken about our Blessed Mother’s ability to guide her children to her son, and Marian apparitions are one of the most intimate ways Mary helps us to find the Lord, meeting them both in heaven.

Nicholas LaBanca talks about this in his article, 5 Messages from Marian Apparitions and Their Meaning , explaining, “Our Lady wants nothing more than to lead us to her son. This is why she is such a powerful intercessor. Let’s reflect on these words of Our Lady, and see how we can incorporate the request she makes in our own lives. Most importantly, let’s continue to pray for the conversion of souls and the entire world.” He goes on to say that “As she is the mother of the whole Church, we see over the course of history how she desires to communicate with her children, always at our Lord’s direction. As Christians, we should strongly consider these messages she has given to us.” Mary, as the caring mother she is, wants nothing more than to guide her children into the arms of the Father and into the safeguard of salvation, and she does this through her appearances to the Church militant on earth.

As her faithful children, we must look to all Church-approved apparitions and revelations as direct calls from Our Lady to go deeper into the Faith, and use her advice to strengthen our relationship with not only her son, but with our brothers and sisters.

argentina marian apparition 2020

When an apparition is recognized by the Vatican and the Holy See, it is only done so after the diocese’s bishop has investigated and approved the apparition. As explained above in the section on how bishops decide to approve certain apparitions, the responsibility of approving any apparition or revelation falls firstly on the diocese’s bishop, and is investigated using the criteria the Vatican published in 1974 .

When the Vatican recognizes an apparition, it does not mean that the apparition is more important than a simply bishop-approved apparition. Rather, it confirms that there was enough evidence to confirm the apparition’s merit, and was easily able to move to the higher Church officials. Regardless, the most well-known apparitions seem to be the ones that are recognized by the Vatican.

1. Our Lady of Guadalupe

argentina marian apparition 2020

Click here for Our Lady’s messages

One of the most well-known apparitions among the faithful and the secular world, Our Lady of Guadalupe, occurred in the sixteenth century to a widower and now saint, St. Juan Diego. She met him on Mount Tepeyacac, instructing him to get the bishop to build a church upon that mountain. To do this, she instructed Juan Diego to go pick a batch of flowers that were nearby, carry them in his tilma (a type of outer garment or cloak typical to that time) and deliver them to the bishop. When Juan Diego got to the bishop and revealed the flowers, the bishop knew a miracle had taken place. Not only had Juan Diego delivered flowers that were out of season, but his cloak was imprinted with a beautiful image of what we know today as Our Lady of Guadalupe. The bishop agreed to build a church in honor of the apparition, and it has become a very popular place of pilgrimage for people across the world.

2. Our Lady of La Salette

argentina marian apparition 2020

Our Lady of La Salette appeared only once, unlike many other Marian apparitions. Taking place in nineteenth-century France, it occurred when two children, Maximin and Melanie, were tending to their sheep. They stumbled upon a woman sitting with her face in her hands, crying. She spoke to the children about her desire for the conversion of sinners, and how displeased her son was with the sins that are committed against him. Her message to the children was to keep the Sabbath day holy by refraining from work and calling them to respect the holy name of Jesus. Pope St. John Paul II reflected on Our Lady on her feast day, saying “LaSalette is a message of hope, for our hope is nourished by the intercession of her who is the Mother of mankind.”

3. Our Lady of the Golden Heart

argentina marian apparition 2020

Our Lady of Beauraing, also known as the Virgin of the Golden Heart, appeared thirty-three times to five children on a playground in the 1930s. She encouraged the children to “pray, pray, pray” for the conversion of sinners, and also desired a chapel to be built at the site, for people to go on pilgrimage. Our Lady spoke of herself as the Immaculate Conception, and on her thirty-third visit to the children, she revealed to them her golden heart. Her feast day is celebrated on the traditional date of the Feast of the Immaculate Heart of Mary.

4. Our Lady of Knock

argentina marian apparition 2020

This apparition is particularly interesting for many reasons. Not only was Mary present, but two other saints as well. In 1879, fifteen people saw an altar with a cross hanging above it. Upon the altar was a Paschal Lamb, and next to the altar was St. John the Evangelist, St. Joseph, and Mary. The apparitions occurred for two hours and the saints did not speak a single word. The fifteen witnesses on sight stayed to pray the Rosary as the apparitions remained. There was even a storm during the apparition, however the area that held Mary, Joseph, St. John, and the altar stayed completely dry.

5. Our Lady of Fatima

argentina marian apparition 2020

Maybe the most well-known of all Marian Apparitions, Our Lady of Fatima appeared to three children, Lucia, Francisco, and Jacinta, in early twentieth-century Portugal. Among many other messages, Our Lady identified herself as Our Lady of the Rosary, urging the children to pray the Rosary frequently, for the conversion of sinners, and for the consecration of Russia to her Immaculate Heart. Many have written about Our Lady of Fatima, and over seventy thousand people were witnesses to her at her last appearance, describing what they saw as the “Dancing of the Sun,” leading to many conversions.

6. Our Lady of Lourdes

argentina marian apparition 2020

Our Lady of Lourdes appeared eighteen times to St. Bernadette in a small grotto in France. She revealed herself as the Immaculate Conception and encouraged St. Bernadette to dedicate prayer and penance to the conversion of sinners. Over the course of the apparitions, Our Lady taught St. Bernadette a secret prayer that she recited until the day she died, “three wonderful secrets” that have never been revealed, and instructed her to bathe in and drink from the fountain on site. Since there was no fountain present, St. Bernadette dug into the gravel, revealing a pond. The stream has since then become a source of healing for many who visit the grotto.

7. Virgin of the Poor

argentina marian apparition 2020

In a garden behind Mariette Beco’s family home, Mary appeared eight times to Mariette, who was eleven at the time. She identified herself as the Virgin of the Poor and promised to intercede for the poor and suffering. The apparitions happened just fifty miles away from the apparition of Our Lady of Beauraing, leading many to think that Mariette was simply copying the accounts of Beauraing. However, Our Lady continued to appear to her, encouraging her to “pray very much” and to believe in her. The Little Chapel was built on the site shortly after the apparitions.

8. Our Lady of Happy Meetings

argentina marian apparition 2020

Our Lady of Laus, also known as Our Lady of Happy Meetings, first appeared to Benoite when she was seventeen and continued to visit her throughout her life. Over the course of these appearances, Our Lady asked for a house to be built for priests, with the aim of drawing people into greater conversion, especially through the sacrament of penance. The site is heavily populated with tourists each year, attracting 120,000 people on pilgrimage annually. There have also been many healings on the site as well, especially through the instructions Our Lady gave to Benoite, placing oil from a lamp on wounds.

9. Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal

argentina marian apparition 2020

Our Lady appeared to St. Catherine twice in the year 1830. The first time, Catherine was woken up by a “shining child” at her bed and told that Our Lady was waiting for her in the chapel. Catherine went to the chapel and observed at first that it was empty, but then, after hearing what she thought to be the rustling of silk, Mary appeared, and Catherine rushed to her side. The two talked for hours, Mary revealing to her that troubling times were ahead for France and that the Lord wants to bestow a great task unto her. Mary appeared several months later, urging Catherine to keep the apparitions a secret to all except her confessor, and commissioned her to have a medal made, now known as the Miraculous Medal. The medal has since then been made and distributed over a billion times all across the world.

10. Our Lady of Hope

argentina marian apparition 2020

During the Franco-Prussian War, Mary appeared to four children on the playground of a convent school in Pontmain, France. The first child to see her was Eugene, and when he tried to point the attention of the adults around him in the direction of Our Lady, none reported seeing her. However, the other three children around him all reported seeing her, leading a nun nearby to guide everyone in prayer. Our Lady spoke no words to the children, but at her feet there was a banner that read, “But pray my children. God will hear you in a short time. My Son allows Himself to be moved by compassion.” On the same day, it is said that the Prussians halted their advance into France when the Prussian Commander reported that “invisible Madonna barring the way.” Just a few months later, a peace treaty was signed between France and Prussia, and the bishop declared that Mary had truly appeared to the four children.

11. Our Lady, Help of Christians

argentina marian apparition 2020

Our Lady, Help of Christians, proves true to her name, appearing to heal Magdalene Kade in 1866, along with healing close to a dozen others shortly after. Magdalene was bedridden due to many illnesses, and had a friend who would stay and watch over her. One night, around 4 AM, the Virgin Mary appeared to her, and Magdalene, hardly able to speak before seeing Our Lady, cried out in joy, “Look at that shine! Look at that beauty.” Her friends staying with her could not see anything, but Mary, clothed in white and wearing a golden crown, looked at Magdalene and said, “My daughter, now you are healed!” and disappeared. Magdalene was able to immediately jump up and was completely healed.

12. Our Lady of Gietrzwald

argentina marian apparition 2020

Our Lady’s message in Gietrzwald, Poland was very similar to that given at Fatima forty years after. Mary appeared to two girls, Justyna and Barbara, as they were preparing for their First Communion. The girls found her sitting on a throne holding the infant Jesus under a maple tree in front of the church. When the girls asked Our Lady who she was, she responded, “I am the Blessed Virgin Mary of the Immaculate Conception!” and told the girls to recite the Rosary daily. The girls spoke to their parish priest, and as word spread, a movement of praying a daily Rosary spread as well, and the area remains a popular place of pilgrimage.

13. Our Lady of Lezajsk

argentina marian apparition 2020

A humble and faithful woodcutter named Thomas Michalek received two visits from the Virgin Mary in sixteenth-century Poland. The first came when he was in the forest, Mary first being seen as a bright light. Mary asked Thomas to go to the area’s priest and ask for a church to be built. However, Thomas was scared of what had happened and did nothing. Our Lady appeared to him again, asking him to take action. When Thomas went to the area’s priest he was not believed, and it wasn’t until after the death of the parish priest that a chapel was finally built on site.

14. Our Lady of Siluva

argentina marian apparition 2020

The apparition of Our Lady of Siluva led to the conversion of an entire town from Calvinism to the Catholic Faith. On a summer day in 1608, Mary appeared to four young children who were tending a flock of sheep on the outskirts of their village, Siluva. She was standing on a rock, holding a baby, and crying heavily. The town of Siluva had been turned over to the Calvinists in 1532, and gradually the whole village was conformed to Calvinist beliefs. However, the visits of Mary to the children were enough to turn the entire town back to the Catholic Faith, and abolish Calvinist rule in Siluva.

15. Our Lady of Zion

argentina marian apparition 2020

The apparition of Our Lady of Zion has a strong connection to Our Lady of The Miraculous Medal, which took place just twelve years prior. Marie Alphonse, an anti-Catholic Jewish man, started wearing a Miraculous Medal to please his new friend, a baron of the Church. While waiting for the baron one day, he received a vision of the Blessed Virgin. He then converted to the Catholic Faith, joined the priesthood, and started a ministry for the conversion of Jews.

16. Mother of the Word

argentina marian apparition 2020

One of the most recent Marian apparitions, Our Lady of Kibeho or “Mother of the Word” appeared to three children in the early 1980s. She continued to visit the children throughout the decade, and the name she identified herself with, Mother of the Word, is said to be synonymous with that of the title, “Mother of God.” One of the things Our Lady expressed to the children was that whenever she appears to a certain place or to a certain person, she is speaking not only to them, but to the whole world, and that the revelations of apparitions are to be applied to the entire community of the faithful.

Below are the remaining ten Marian apparitions that have yet to be recognized by the Vatican, but have been approved for devotion by the Catholic Church. Remember, just because these apparitions haven’t been recognized by the Holy See, doesn’t mean they’re any less important! Check them out; chances are you haven’t heard of at least half of these amazing appearances.

1. Our Lady of Good Help

argentina marian apparition 2020

Our Lady of Good Help’s appearances to Adele Brise in 1859 is the only officially approved Marian apparition in the United States. Mary appeared to Adele three times over the course of a year, in the farmlands of what is now Champion, Wisconsin. Our Lady identified herself as the “Queen of Heaven,” completing the Marian Mysteries that began one year prior by Our Lady of Lourdes, as Mary revealed herself then to be the “Immaculate Conception.” Additionally, Our Lady of Good Help encouraged Adele to dedicate her life to evangelization using the Catechism . The shrine of Our Lady of Good Help was just recently approved by Bishop Ricken in 2010, and is already a popular pilgrimage site for many Americans.

Click here to see the news article on Our Lady of Good Help’s approval.

2. Our Lady of Good Success

argentina marian apparition 2020

Our Lady of Good Success appeared to the now Venerable Mother Mariana de Jesus Torres in the late sixteenth century. Her words were very prophetic, and she warned Mother Mariana about a decline of faith in the twentieth century, especially among priests and other vocations. Other predictions that have proved true were the local events of Ecuador, as well as the Blessed Pope Pius IX’s declaration of the Marian dogma, the Immaculate Conception.

3. Our Lady of Eternal Aid

argentina marian apparition 2020

Jeanne Courtel, who was born deaf and without the ability to properly speak, was tending to her family’s sheep when she received her first apparition of the Virgin Mary. Upon appearing to her, Mary healed Jeanne of her infirmities and continued to visit her fourteen times after that. In addition to Jeanne’s miraculous healing, further evidence of the apparitions was created when Mary showed Jeanne a hidden spot where an image of Our Lady of Eternal Aid was buried. The statue was left on the site, and immediately the bishop built a chapel there. The statue can now be seen at the chapel, and several other miracles have been reported due to the intercession of Our Lady of Eternal Aid.

4. Madonna of Montagnaga

argentina marian apparition 2020

The Madonna of Montagnaga appeared to a simple shepherdess, Domenica Targa, in Italy during the eighteenth century. Upon being frightened while saying the Rosary with her cattle in a basin, Domenica cried out to Christ and Mary for help, and Mary appeared to her. She was wearing all white and held a rosary in her hand. Our Lady asked Domenica what she was doing, and when she responded that she was praying the Rosary, Our Lady praised her and asked her to travel to the Church of St. Anne on the solemnity of the Ascension, so that she may see her again. Domenica followed Mary’s instructions and was visited by Our Lady four other times in front of countless witnesses, urging them to pray for the conversion of sinners.

5. Our Lady of Sorrows

argentina marian apparition 2020

The most well-recorded apparition of Our Lady of Sorrows came from two women in 1888 as they were going after a group of lost sheep. Fabiana and Serafina were traveling up a neighboring hill when they saw a bright light coming from within a cluster of rocks. After looking closer, they were astounded to find an image of Our Lady of Sorrows. They returned to their village crying, saying that she was a very beautiful woman, fair and young with ratted hair, bleeding out of wounds received from seven swords. As people began to pilgrimage to the site afterward, many reported seeing the Blessed Mother, sometimes as Our Lady of Sorrow, and sometimes as the Pieta.

6. Reconciler of People and Nations

argentina marian apparition 2020

The apparitions of The Reconciler of People and Nations wasn’t too long ago, the last one occurring in 1990. Our Lady appeared thirty-one times to Maria Esperanza, calling herself The Reconciler of People and Nations, and warning of future war and suffering. On one occasion, as many as 108 people reported seeing the Blessed Mother, and many have visited the site, reporting several miracles and signs.

7. Our Lady of Akita

argentina marian apparition 2020

The apparitions of Our Lady of Atika is particularly interesting because, unlike the other apparitions, Sister Agnes heard the Blessed Virgin’s messages through a wooden statue and not a traditional appearance. Sister Agnes had already been experiencing signs of supernatural works before the apparitions, seeing a bright light emerging from the tabernacle at her convent, and receiving the stigmata in 1973. Much like the story of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal, Sister Agnes was led to the statue by what is believed to be her guardian angel, and on three different occasions, the statue spoke to her about praying for the reparation of sins, following her superiors, warning of great chastisement, and the second coming. Along with these messages, countless miracles have been attributed to Our Lady of Akita, such as the healing of Sister Agnes’s hearing, the sisters finding the statue bleeding from a wound in her hand, and the statue crying 101 times over the course of eight years.

8. Our Lady of Cuapa

argentina marian apparition 2020

The apparition of Our Lady of Cuapa was witnessed in the late twentieth century by a Church sacristan and future priest named Bernardo Martinez. Bernardo’s first account of the supernatural appearance was from a statue of Our Lady in the church, which was glowing brightly. Shortly after, the Virgin Mary appeared to him directly, asking him to renew the First Saturday devotions and pray daily Rosaries with biblical citations. Frightened with fear of ridicule, Bernardo ignored the visit from Our Lady and avoided the site in which she appeared. However, Mary appeared to him again and asked him for help, filling his heart with a peace that took away his fear of judgment from others. Our Lady spoke to him about the future of Nicaragua, and when appearing for the last time, she was not seen by the fifty people accompanying Bernardo, due to their hardness of heart. This greatly saddened Our Lady, and she told Bernardo that she would not be appearing at the site anymore, but encouraged him to pray the Rosary, turn from violence, and make peace.

9. Our Lady of the Rosary

argentina marian apparition 2020

What’s interesting about the apparitions of Our Lady of the Rosary is not only that they were given initially to a woman with no formal knowledge of the Bible or theology, but that the apparitions are considered to be ongoing even today. Numerous healings have been attributed to this visit from Our Lady, and Gladys, the woman whom Mary appeared to, received apparitions of Our Lady nearly daily for six years. There have been many discussions with the Holy See about the apparitions and their messages, but several bishops have found no reason to reject the apparitions, and the site has continued to produce positive fruits for the faithful.

This information you present here is very helpful and valuable. Is there a book that you provide that speaks of all the apparitions as you do here? I also seen a book called THE THUNDER OF JUSTICE which appears to mention many apparitions of Mary, any opinion on that writing?

thank you Gerry Leon

It mentions TEN under Bishop Approved, but only lists NINE? “Below are the remaining ten Marian apparitions that have yet to be recognized by the Vatican, but have been approved for devotion by the Catholic Church.” Was one removed?

This article doesn’t seem to be well sited, unless I am missing something. Is there an official website that you could go to to see Vatican rulings on these apparitions? The one website that was cited was miracle hunter.com. Honestly, this website brought me more confusion then clarity.

What about her visiting you in your dreams with a message? are dreams really that or are they the mother trying to come through with her message?

Where is our lady of Częstochowa?

Shelby, you write, “The Church is very careful when it comes to approving and recognizing Marian apparitions.” Not always. Canon Julio Poro devotes much of his three books including, “Garabandal Sin Interés” to showing the weakness of the investigation, and of the Santander bishops’ “official” notes based on the Commission’s investigating work. You continue, “For an apparition to be worthy of belief. . . it must be approved by the bishop of the area where the apparition took place. One does not need to wait for a bishop to rule favorably on an apparition to know that it is worthy of belief. God can do anything He wants, correct? And one thing He has done is to give some people the gift of certainty that Garabandal is of supernatural origin.” One, person who expressed this certainty (before approval) was Santander Bishop del Val Gallo. In May of 2007 Dr. Andrés Tunon told me while visiting with him in front of his home in Garbandal, “While I sat on the bishop’s bed after operating on him, he told me, ‘I Antonio del Val Gallo believe that Garabandal is supernatural, but as Bishop I can’t say that.’” I devote twenty-three pages of Appendix IV of “A Walk to Garabandal A Journey of Happiness and Hope” to listing the popes, cardinals, bishops, priests, doctors and others who have spoken or acted favorably toward Garabandal, all of these before approval. The Garabandal pastor, Fr. Rolando (also dean of the area) expresses his belief. He started adding “Reina de Garabandal” to the litany of Loretto in the village church on Holy Saturday of 2011. My grandmother was a teenager living close to Knock, Ireland at the time of the apparitions and would have expressed her belief. My mother (1897-1992) very early spoke and acted as if Fatima was worthy of admiration and devotion. Are you saying that they should have waited for the bishop’s approval to do so? I wandered into the area of Garabandal and arrived there on July 2, 1969, eight years to the day of a much better known person’s first visit. And since my third visit in 1971 have been telling people about what I saw, heard and felt while talking with the villagers, visionaries and other eye-witnesses. While my mother and grandmother would have told their families and neighbors, I have a much better opportunity aided by slides, photos and video of the ecstatic reaction of the visionaries. I stopped counting after giving some three hundred presentations mostly in the greater San Francisco Bay Area. Others have done much more than I. People like “A Walk to Garabandal A Journey of Happiness and Hope” (2017) because it is different from all the other books on the subject. In 2020 I was invited to participate as the only English speaker joining some sixteen Spaniards and an Argentine in the documentary “Unstoppable Waterfall.” Because telling others about Garabandal is the best means I have of showing my love of neighbors – helping them get to Heaven, I have personally told thousands of people offering my business card of both the above. I am no longer surprised at how many already know about it. You don’t mention “Our Lady of Light” an approved apparition site some five miles to the west over the Pena Sagra Ridge from Garabandal. There should be better sources than Miracle Hunter on apparitions. I have travelled to Garabandal from the U.S. West Coast nineteen times spending about five years total in the area learning about how the people responded to the apparitions. So I would be happy to learn also from you, including of course any errors you see in what I write.

Please repent and read the Word of God. I had read most of these accounts and they cause me sorrow for how lost Catholic Doctrines are. There is only 1 mediator between the Father and man. Some of these accounts are blatantly blasphemy. Only God is Holy, Only God receives worship. With much love for Catholics, I beg you to read the Word of God.

Do not blaspeme the Mother of God. Catholic believe in three levels of reverence to God, Mary, and the Saints. Latria is given to god alone. The worship that only he can demand. Hyperdulia is the veneration given to Mary as His mother, obviously not comparable to the worship given to God. And lastly, Dulia is given is the veneration given to The Saints as having participated/ cooperated so closely with Gods plan for mankind. No other religion bears good fruit or has Saints, i.e. people that live lives of superhuman virtue. No other church is sufficient for salvation. Woe to those who attack and blaspeme Gods Mother or give Her less than Her due. You will face a wrathful Judge on judgement day

Hi Curtis, thank you for caring about the salvation of Catholics. Truly. I think there are many things misunderstood by those outside the church and I would love to help you understand what we believe. We believe that there is one mediator between the Father and man and that is Jesus Christ, but we also believe there is a powerful mediator between man and Jesus and that is his mother. Jesus will do things for his mother that he wouldn’t have done without her asking him. You can read about it in scriptures. He had no intention of helping the bride and groom who ran out of wine. It was only through her insistence that he did. We do not worship her. We honor her. She is the mother of all mankind. And we honor her as instructed by the Father in the fifth commandment: Honor your father and your mother. Jesus also honored her. And when you get to know the Blessed Mother, you will see that she always points you away from her and towards her son, Jesus Christ. She directs everything back to her son. The heart of the Just Judge can be softened by the sweet voice of his Mother. I read scriptures and hear the Word of God at each mass, but I am comforted by the knowledge that I will receive her intercession on my day of judgement. God bless you!

This, like many sites, seems to focus on approved apparitions. No problem. But sites like the National Catholic Register and others advise, “stick to approved apparitions.” My church doesn’t advise me to do that. There is good evidence that the reported apparitions at Garabandal are the most important of all time. This is the reason that Catholic Church authorities have not approved it, and will not do so until the prophecies given there are fulfilled. Church approval does not change the importance of an apparition, correct? I would like to see instructions on how to respond to reported apparitions. I use and highly recommend Fr. Jose, M. Saiz’s five articles, Apariciones y revelaciones privades (Santander, July 1961).

How you can help promote the Fatima message of observing 1st Five Saturday Devotion in United States and in the world?

Beautiful. I love Merry

The first seven messages of Medjugorje were ‘approved’ by the Vatican about 5 years ago, Fr. A second Papal envoy has been appointed and parishes may now sponsor their own pilgrimages!

Hello and thank you for this lovely site. I do believe that Our Lady of Ocatlan has received a papal coronation.

This is an amazing guide! Thank you!!!

I believed in Miracles Jesus and His Mother Mary.

this is h o l y

What is it you hate?

What about Our Lady of Kibeho?

She is listed under Vatican-Approved Marian Apparitions, #16, with the title Mother of the Word (which is another name for this one)

Thank you! I am excited to learn more about Marian apparitions, many I was unfamiliar with. However, what about Garabandal and Medjugorje?

Yes, what about Garabandal? This, like many sites, seems to focus on approved apparitions. There seems to be good evidence that Garabandal is the most important apparition of all time, and this is the reason that Catholic Church authorities have not approved it, and will not do so until the prophecies given there are fulfilled. Church approval does not change the importance of an apparition, correct?

Both ruled false by their juridical bishops, but rebellious laity, to their great shame, have refused to submit to those licit rulings.

You write, “Both [Garabandal and M.] ruled false by their juridical bishops, but rebellious laity, to their great shame, have refused to submit to those licit rulings. I don’t know what sources you use, I suggest “Declaraciones Oficiales de la Jerarquia Sobre Garabandal (Santander 1970).” It has the first seven “official” statements on the subject by four Santander bishops. I’ve had my copies since shortly after publication. I have seen it on-line but do your own translation. In it we can read the only definitively negative judgement on Garabandal – that of Bishop Beitia on Oct.7, 1962. The others are the neutral (not certain if supernatural or not) and in his note of July 1965 Bishop Beitia states that also, rescinding his negative judgement. Be careful about disseminating false information. I will let you explain your “. . . rebellious laity. ..” Even if the bishops had rules them false (they haven’t) my church does not oblige me to agree. Yes, I might be imprudent unless I had good reason to disagree, and of course I am obliged, as always, to tell the truth. My certainty that Garabandal is of supernatural origin is of the same nature as my certainty that God exists, that Jesus founded a church etc. See my recent article on this. Belgian Father Materne Laffineur (RIP 11/28/1970) with whom I spent two afternoons in July 1970, was a Church investigator of the 1932-33 apparitions at Beauraing. He made it known that those who put obstacles in the way of the Garabandal apparitions are likely to spend eternity in Hell. I will leave that judgment to God. But my love for you and your sources, prompts this attempt at correction and to set the record straight. F. Sanchez Ventura explains the Belgian priest’s reasoning on pages 154-5 of his “The Apparitions of Garabandal” (1967 7th U.S. edition). He writes: “More than ninety thousand people are estimated to have stayed at home on the day of the [Fatima] miracle, deaf to the Blessed Virgin’s appeal, due to others who brought to bear on them powers that lay beyond their real attributes and forbade them to believe in ‘visions’. . . Perhaps some of those souls, whose lives were bound to have changed, had they but seen the miracle, are now deprived of God’s presence because they followed that unfortunate piece of advice. What a responsibility for those who were truly to blame.” [The above is my translation. It seems more forceful in the original, “El Interrogante de Garabandal.”] Ventura shows that some have done the same in dissuading people from responding to Garabandal. The two above- mentioned men and I know and rely upon an infallible source, which went further than warning not to put up obstacles. This source makes it known that there will be a severe consequence if we do not make the messages given at Garabandal known. Cardinal Ottaviani told the visionary Jacinta in 1975, “The Vatican has absolutely nothing against Garabandal, but given that they involve prophecies of an eschatological nature of transcendental importance for the whole world, don’t expect us to pronounce on them quickly.” (Ramon Perez to me August 1979.)

How does one go about tracking down which apparitions the church has and has not approved? I can’t find anything on the Vatican website. Must one simply delve into every apparition they see mentioned, and hope someone else has happened across the relevant document from the Vatican?

I have had trouble finding a list like this, as well. I would recommend searching something along the lines of “Unapproved Marian Apparitions,” where at least you can have a list to go off of for more in-depth research on specific ones. Suggestions would be http://www.miraclehunter.com/marian_apparitions/unapproved_apparitions/index.html or similar lists. I cannot speak with knowledge for the location of specific Vatican documents. Good luck searching!

The Vatican has rejected the apparition in Amsterdam under the name Our Lady of All Nations. Please see https://aleteia.org/2020/10/20/vatican-reaffirms-rejection-of-so-called-apparitions-of-our-lady-of-all-nations/

this is wonderful to have an article about this! It’s been difficult for me trying to figure out this info on my own! thank you so much!

Thank you and God bless

What a beautiful article. Thank you. I was raised Catholic and attended catholic schools and College so I thought I knew all about Marian Apparitions. I learned a lot more thanks this article. It would be great to have a book with all this information ( or permission to print) . What a great gift this would make to those converting to Catholicism.

Correction: The visionary Ida is a woman, therefore: “our Lady entrusted her with … “(not him, as written in the article). Everything about the Lady of All Nations’ apparitions in Amsterdam can be found here: https://www.de-vrouwe.info/en/

Corrected. Thank you, Wessen.

Actually the Vatican has not approved the Lady of All Nations apparitions. See https://aleteia.org/2020/10/20/vatican-reaffirms-rejection-of-so-called-apparitions-of-our-lady-of-all-nations/ Originally the first bishop did not approve, as well as the Vatican. The later bishop approved yet the Vatican did not change its non-approval.

What about the Virgin of Revelation in Rome, 1940s?

That was approved and swiftly. Then buried and not spoken of.

A Marian apparition has been approved in Argentina - and it's a big deal

argentina marian apparition 2020

What began with glowing rosaries and the rediscovery of a statue of the Virgin Mary in Argentina has now been approved by the local bishop as a series of apparitions that are “of supernational origin” and worthy of belief.

And the designation is deeply significant, recognizing the messages of Our Lady of the Rosary of San Nicolas, which exhort peace and give dire warnings, one miracle researcher says.

Bishop Hector Cardelli of San Nicolas in Argentina’s Buenos Aires province made the announcement May 22 at the conclusion of a Mass during the well-attended pilgrimage to the Shrine of Our Lady of the Rosary of San Nicolas.

The bishop has investigated the contents of the apparitions through 1990.

“In my twelfth year of pastoring San Nicolas and, having followed with faith and responsibility the Marian events that I have known about since the very beginning, I have reached the decision to recognize them for my diocese,” Bishop Hector said.

“I recognize the supernatural nature of the happy events with which God through his beloved daughter, Jesus through his Most Holy Mother, the Holy Spirit through his beloved spouse, has desired to lovingly manifest himself in our diocese.”

Michael O’Neil, a miracle researcher and author who runs the website MiracleHunter.com, told CNA that the approval is significant. It means that the messages from the apparitions are not only approved for the faithful to read, he explained: the bishop is saying the events were in fact actual miraculous apparitions.

“That puts it on par with Lourdes, Fatima and Guadalupe,” O’Neil said.

The apparitions began after some rosaries in homes throughout San Nicolas de los Arroyos in Buenos Aires Province began to glow without any explanation.

A wife and mother named Gladys Quiroga de Motta saw these glowing rosaries and began to pray to the Virgin Mary. The Virgin appeared to her on Sept. 25, carrying the infant Jesus and wearing a blue gown and veil. Her figure glowed with light.

With only a fourth-grade education, Gladys had no great knowledge of the Bible or theology. She is a mother of two daughters and a grandmother.

At various times, the Virgin Mary apparition referred the woman to several Bible verses. One month after the first appearance, the apparition gave Gladys a white rosary and said, “Receive this Rosary from my hands and keep it forever and ever. You are obedient; I am happy because of it. Rejoice, for God is with you.”

The Virgin Mary asked Gladys to go look for a statue that had been blessed by a Pope and was forgotten away in a church. She found the statue on Nov. 27, 1983. It was in the belfry of the diocesan cathedral.

The statue in question was of the Mother of God holding the Child Jesus. It had been brought from Rome after it was blessed by Pope Leo XIII. Following the Virgin’s instructions, it was found in the bell tower of the church. The statue resembled the apparition.

Gladys also received 68 visits and messages from Jesus.

According to reports, Gladys shared the apparitions’ messages from the beginning. She was always at the disposal of the church authorities. Gladys now lives a life of great devotion, always keeping a low profile. She reportedly received the stigmata on her wrists, feet, side and shoulder.

There have been several documented healings related to the apparitions, including the healing of a boy with a brain tumor.

Gladys has shared about 1,800 messages from the Virgin Mary, O’Neil said. Many focus on topics like peace, repentance, returning to the sacraments, and drawing people closer to Christ. But there are also messages in an apocalyptic theme, predicting great turmoil for humanity ahead.

“So that’s the tricky part with all of this,” O’Neil said. “It’s not as simple as some of the other apparitions that just draw people closer to Christ… there are some dire warnings as well.”

Father René Laurentin, an expert on Marian apparitions, recounted the apparitions’ messages in his book, “An Appeal from Mary in Argentina.”

At one point, Mary said, “Many hearts do not accept my invitation to prayer and to conversion. That is why the work of the devil is growing and expanding.”

The warnings said that mankind is “in the process of falling in to a progressive self-destruction” and the Virgin Mary represents hope. “It is up to you to set your eyes and your heart on God,” she said.

“I want to cure my children from this illness which is materialism; an illness which makes many suffer. I want to help them discover Christ, and I want to make it known to them that Christ prevails over everything,” Mary said in the apparition. She stressed the importance of prayer, especially the rosary.

The apparition of Jesus told Gladys, “If this generation will not listen to my mother, it will perish. I ask everyone to listen to her. Man’s conversion is necessary.”

“Today I warn the world, for the world is not aware: souls are in danger. Many are lost,” Jesus said in a 1987 apparition. “Few will find salvation unless they accept me as their Savior. My mother must be accepted. My mother must be heard in the totality of her messages. The world must discover the richness she brings to Christians.”

“The children of sin will grow up in sin if their unbelief increases. I want a renewal of the spirit, a detachment from death, and an attachment to life. I have chosen the heart of my mother, so that what I ask will be achieved. Souls will come to me through the means of her Immaculate Heart.”

The diocese’s successive local bishops have discussed the apparitions several times. Bishop Domingo Salvador Castagna ordered the construction of a shrine as the Virgin had requested. Construction began in 1987 and the shrine was consecrated in 1990. That year, he approved the publication and dissemination of the messages of Our Lady of the Rosary in San Nicolas.

Every year, a massive pilgrimage to the shrine takes place on May 22.

O’Neil said it is unique that the bishops have approved the apparition messages from 1983-1990, even though the apparition is continuing today.

“So we have an apparition where we have a living visionary, who’s approved as authentic by the bishops,” he said. “Usually they wait until the messages end or the visionary dies, but in this particular case they decided to go ahead with the approval.”

Bishop Cardelli explained the process that led him to make his latest decision. He consulted experts and witnesses and was conscious of his duty to monitor or intervene in such apparition claims.

He said that he judged the events according to two criteria: “Positive and negative, and in both cases there were not, nor are there errors.” He said that he made his discernment using three specific criteria: “Were the events of natural origin? Could it be a work of the Enemy? Are they of supernatural origin?”

“The answers to these questions gave me the certainty that the fruits are real and positive and go beyond mere human action,” the bishop stated.

O’Neill said that the process for approving apparitions evaluates their messages to ensure there is nothing to contradict Scripture, tradition or the faith and morals of the Catholic Church. Apparitions are “private revelation” that do not add to the public revelation of Sacred Scripture. The investigation also evaluates the visionary to confirm that they are of sound mind and moral character.

The declaration that an apparition is “worthy of belief” does not mean the faithful are obliged to believe the apparition or that it happened. O’Neil said that there was no evidence that Pope Francis was involved in evaluating this apparition when he was Archbishop of Buenos Aires.

Bishop Cardelli’s decree states that he recognized the apparition with “moral certitude, good intention and hope” and after fulfilling the Holy See’s suggested requirements for discernment. He said the decree is “seeking the greater glory of God and the good of our Church.”

Accompanying the bishop’s decree is the presentation of the book “The Spiritual School of Our Lady of the Rosary of San Nicolas.” The book says the most important teachings in the Virgin Mary’s messages are that “she offers us for our adherence to everything He tells us, because He is the culmination of revelation.”

“Finally, and as Our Holy Mother has requested, I implore Heaven in the name of the entire diocese, that she be forever the Queen and Lady of San Nicolas de los Arroyos,” the bishop concluded.

Pope sends message at end of Argentina's Marian Year

By Vatican News staff writer

Pope Francis on Tuesday sent a brief video message to the Church in Argentina, which celebrates the end of a year dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary.

“The National Marian Year closes today,” Pope Francis noted. “A year in which, with the restrictions of this time of the pandemic, we have followed many activities in memory and honor of the Virgin, our Mother.”

“I join all the faithful who today celebrate the end of this National Marian Year,” the Pope continued. “I pray for you and ask you to pray for me.”

Our Lady: Mother and disciple

Pope Francis reminded the faithful of the qualities of Our Lady.

“And do not forget that Mary is both Mother and disciple,” Pope Francis said. “She is the Mother of Jesus; she is the one who brought Jesus into the world. And she is a disciple. She is the first to follow Jesus, to do what Jesus says, to obey.”

Imparting his blessing on the faithful, Pope Francis prayed that Mary, Mother and disciple may accompany us in our daily lives.

National Marian Year

Four hundred years ago, an indigenous Argentine discovered a statue of Our Lady in a rock niche on the side of a slope in a remote area.

The image of Our Lady bears the skin tone of the local population, and has since led to a widespread renewed devotion to the Virgen del Valle (Our Lady of the Valley), patroness of the Catamarca region where the image was discovered.

To commemorate the 400 th anniversary of the finding of the statue, the Bishops of Argentina declared a National Marian year from 8 December 2019 to 8 December 2020. The year 2020 also marks the 500 th anniversary of the first Mass offered on Argentine soil.

As part of the events marking the anniversary, 400 small grottos are being constructed in honor of Our Lady.

Buenos Aires, Argentina, Jun 4, 2016 / 05:11 am (CNA).-

Marian Apparition - Argentina

And the designation is deeply significant, recognizing the messages of Our Lady of the Rosary of San Nicolas, which exhort peace and give dire warnings, one miracle researcher says.

Bishop Hector Cardelli of San Nicolas in Argentina’s Buenos Aires province made the announcement May 22 at the conclusion of a Mass during the well-attended pilgrimage to the Shrine of Our Lady of the Rosary of San Nicolas.

The bishop has investigated the contents of the apparitions through 1990.

“(I)n my twelfth year of pastoring San Nicolas and, having followed with faith and responsibility the Marian events that I have known about since the very beginning, I have reached the decision to recognize them for my diocese,” Bishop Hector said.

Mary foretold COVID-19 pandemic, alleged visionary claims

TREVIGNANO ROMANO, Italy (CNS) — An Italian woman who claims to regularly experience supernatural visions said Mary told her in September 2019 that a new disease would soon emerge from China.

“Pray for China, because new diseases will come from there, all ready to infect the air by unknown bacteria,” wrote Gisella Cardia in a message she alleges came from Mary.

On the third of every month, hundreds of Italians flock to Trevignano Romano, a small town 30 miles from Rome, to pray the rosary with Cardia. The gathering takes place in an open field atop a cliff overlooking Lake Bracciano. A blue cross and large, encased statue of Mary are the focal points of an array of lawn chairs and benches to accommodate pilgrims.

During the rosary Aug. 3, shortly after 3 o’clock in the afternoon, Cardia knelt and looked skyward. She briefly wrote in a notebook and, at the conclusion of the rosary, shared with the crowd the message she claims to have received in ecstasy.

Some pilgrims took photos and videos of the sun, which they said was moving and pulsating.

Cardia says she receives messages not only on the third of the month, but regularly throughout each day. Hundreds of the supposed messages, which Cardia claims she had been receiving directly from Mary or Jesus since April 2016, are  published  on the website of the Association of Our Lady of Trevignano Romano.

The 121-word message that Cardia says refers to the coronavirus was dated Sept. 28, 2019. Catholic  News  Service was unable to verify that the message was actually posted on that date.

Mary spoke in September about an “unknown bacteria,” or, as Cardia now says, a “‘virus that would arrive from China’ — after a few months it arrived. It’s never long before what (Mary) says comes to pass.”

Many of Cardia’s messages underline the imminence of the End Times and predict earthquakes, pestilences and wars. She says that the messages are intended to heighten awareness of the reality of evil and sin and to call for the conversion of sinners, primarily through the recitation of the rosary.

Capuchin Father Flavio Ubodi, author of “I Will Dry Your Tears,” a compendium of the messages to Cardia, identifies same-sex marriage and abortion among the present-day evils for which humanity must repent.

“The messages are always asking for conversion and prayer; they are not different from those of Fatima or Lourdes or other places,” Cardia told CNS.

Judging the credibility of an apparition is the task of the local bishop, according to norms  published  by the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith.

(See a related story:  Church uses caution with claims of Marian apparitions )

Since Trevignano Romano is located within the Diocese of Civita Castellana, the job of determining the credibility of the apparitions to Cardia falls to Bishop Romano Rossi.

“The Holy Roman Inquisition hasn’t been set in motion yet,” Bishop Rossi, laughing, told CNS July 31.

Bishop Romano Rossi of Civita Castellana speaks to a reporter July 31, 2020, outside a church in Anguillara Sabazia, Italy. The bishop said that though he has not yet set up a formal commission to evaluate the credibility of the apparitions to Gisella Cardia, he is following the alleged supernatural messages and evaluating both their content and spirit. (CNS photo/Robert Duncan)

“I’m not going to make myself the Torquemada of the situation,” he said, referring to Tomas de Torquemada, the Spanish Inquisition’s first chief inquisitor. “We need time. If it comes from men, it will end; if it comes from God, it will grow. We’ll see.”

“Obviously, I’m in touch with my superiors in Rome about these things,” he added.

Gaining the church’s approval can take a long time; visionaries and witnesses must be questioned, and the fruits of the apparitions — such as conversions, miracles and healings — must be examined. The church may even wait more than 100 years before judging an apparition as being “worthy of belief.”

According to the norms, the local bishop should set up a commission of experts, including theologians, canonists, psychologists and doctors, to help him determine the facts, the mental, moral and spiritual wholesomeness and seriousness of the visionary, and whether the message and testimony are free from theological and doctrinal error.

“Conformity to dogma is not simply about not saying heresy,” Bishop Rossi said. “The heart of doctrinal conformity is the proclamation of grace, the proclamation of mercy, the new creation.”

“I am studying the spirit of the messages,” Bishop Rossi said, adding that he is looking for “the proclamation of grace and not of judgment.”

The bishop also said that while he was pleased to let the pilgrims use a church for their recitation of the rosary, he would be happier if more of the pilgrims came to Sunday Mass. “It would be a completion — not just saying, ‘We are a group that requests a meeting place,’ but ‘We are children of God who want to sit at the table with our other brothers and sisters.'”

Cardia says her life has been transformed since the apparitions began in 2016. She no longer works but stays at home 24 hours a day, in part because her claims have been rejected by the local townspeople.

“The locals are against me,” Cardia told CNS. “I feel sorry for them.”

Mornings are for housework, but in the afternoon, Cardia receives guests who come for spiritual guidance and hope for a personal message from Mary delivered through the alleged visionary.

The Association of Our Lady of Trevignano Romano is run by Cardia’s husband, Gianni, who has believed in the veracity of his wife’s visions from the beginning.

The association accepts donations for the maintenance of the field it owns and where the apparitions allegedly occur. During the coronavirus lockdown, a large gate and fence were added to supplement a video surveillance system, which Cardia said is necessary to prevent vandalism. The field is open regularly, however, for anyone who would like to visit and pray.

On Aug. 3, Cardia and her husband unveiled an artist’s rendering of a large sanctuary structure she said Mary would like to be built on the field, along with a promise that a source of miraculous healing water would be revealed later, for which a well would be needed.

The projects, however, are on hold because of local building restrictions.

Michele Fiore said he has been coming to Trevignano Romano from southern Rome for years both for the deep experience of prayer and because the apocalyptic themes of the messages help him make sense of current events in the world.

“If (Mary) were not with us,” Fiore said, “I would feel really not only abandoned but really scared because of what is happening now.”

A woman who identified herself as a hermit named Sister Patrizia said she learned of the apparitions to Cardia while suffering an illness in her Tuscan hermitage.

“I discovered that truly in these latter times the Mother of God comes to us personally,” she said Aug. 3 in Trevignano Romano. “The Mother of God and the Lord speak and prepare us for extraordinary events.”

Cardia said Mary has revealed to her that the COVID-19 pandemic will flare up strongly in the fall, that the current low rates of infection in Italy are a “momentary illusion” and that “everything will come back worse than before; it’s just a pause.”

Asked about that prediction, Bishop Rossi said: “One would have a 50% chance of guessing correctly.”

Marian Apparitions Approved in Argentina

web-our-lady-madonna-mary-statue-back-worradirek-shutterstock_226051258.jpg

Last month on May 22 Bishop Hector Cardelli of San Nicolás de los Arroyos in Argentina declared the Marian apparitions received by Gladys Quiroga de Motta to be of “supernatural origin” and “worthy of belief.”

Bishop Cardelli explained his decision, saying, “(I)n my twelfth year of pastoring San Nicolas and, having followed with faith and responsibility the Marian events that I have known about since the very beginning, I have reached the decision to recognize them for my diocese… I recognize the supernatural nature of the happy events with which God through his beloved daughter, Jesus through his Most Holy Mother, the Holy Spirit through his beloved spouse, has desired to lovingly manifest himself in our diocese.”

His public proclamation comes after a thorough investigation into the visions of Our Lady that occurred during the 1980s. The uneducated mother reportedly received 1,800 messages from Our Lady, including 68 from Jesus Himself. Past bishops have been favorable towards the visions, including Bishop Castagna who granted an “Imprimatur” or approval of the publication of her messages.

Approval of these apparitions by a local bishop is the correct procedure for local apparitions. A Vatican document that was drafted in 1978 states the steps needed to confirm a private revelation.

“When Ecclesiastical Authority is informed of a presumed apparition or revelation, it will be its responsibility:

a) first, to judge the fact according to positive and negative criteria (cf.  infra , no. I);

b) then, if this examination results in a favorable conclusion, to permit some public manifestation of cult or of devotion, overseeing this with great prudence (equivalent to the formula, “for now, nothing stands in the way”) ( pro nunc nihil obstare ).

c) finally, in light of time passed and of experience, with special regard to the fecundity of spiritual fruit generated from this new devotion, to express a judgment regarding the authenticity and supernatural character if the case so merits.”

Only the Apostolic See can override a local Ordinary’s decision. It would take something grave and not “motivated by suspect reasons” to reverse a decision. At this point it does not look like Bishop Cardelli’s statement will be challenged, as the messages are in conformity with Catholic doctrine and there are no worries about the mental state of the visionary.

Numerous miracles have been attributed to Our Lady in connection to these apparitions, including glowing rosaries and permanent healings. One miraculous story relates how Our Lady asked Gladys to find a statue that was blessed by the pope in the local cathedral. It was found in the bell tower and the statue closely resembled the Lady who appeared to Gladys. According to protocol, each miracle was reviewed to ensure that it was authentic.

Additionally, a shrine was built in response to the visions and was consecrated by the local bishop in 1990. Pilgrims have been flocking there ever since and the sanctuary dedicated to the Blessed Mother has strengthened the faith of many.

What is unique about the approval is that the visionary, Gladys, is still living. She keeps to herself and “reportedly received the stigmata on her wrists, feet, side and shoulder.”

In general the messages echo the words of previous Marian apparitions, calling all people to repentance. However, both Our Lady and Jesus gave words of warning. For example, Jesus said, “If this generation will not listen to my mother, it will perish. I ask everyone to listen to her. Man’s conversion is necessary… Today I warn the world, for the world is not aware: souls are in danger. Many are lost, few will find salvation unless they accept me as their Savior. My mother must be accepted. My mother must be heard in the totality of her messages. The world must discover the richness she brings to Christians.”

Our Lady’s message in these new apparitions is not much different than what she said at the Wedding Feast at Cana, “Do whatever He tells you” (John 2:5). As always, Mary points to Jesus and asks the world to repent and believe in the Gospel.

History of the Apparitions to Friar Elías del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús

argentina marian apparition 2020

(Account transmitted by the visionary in 2013)

The Virgin Mary

The whole process of the Apparitions of the Virgin Mary that we live began when I was around five or seven years old in the humble patio of my house, located in the department of Canelones, in Uruguay.

This was a period in which my family was living intense processes of learning. When I was a boy, My mother had taught me some prayers, as the Our Father and the Hail Mary. At that time, I asked the Virgin for inner help by means of prayer so that She would give us Her peace and Her light for the situation that was unfolding on the family level.

It was when I was between five and seven years old, that for the first time the Lady, brighter than Light, appeared during a winter night upon a tree, a willow, which was in the patio of my house. I was returning from playing with friends from the neighborhood and when I entered the patio something inside of me made me stop in front of this tree and there, with clarity, as if my eyes had opened beyond the physical, I saw a Lady dressed in a white tunic and a white mantle. She was placed with Her feet upon the tree in a delicate way, She had Her hands in a praying position, carrying a rosary between Her hands, Her face was soft, bright and with a delicate smile on Her face, which transmitted peace through a deep silence.

In the weeks that followed after the first apparition, I remember that everything in the surrounding family situation had changed. All returned to normality and peace. It was the moment in which I started to pray more and to unite myself in this way to the Virgin Mary. I never made any comment to anyone about this apparition. This fact was revealed only to Mother Shimani many years later.

After a few years, the presence of Mary, the Divine Mother, gradually approached again to accompany me during the time of secondary school. When I was around 15 years old, the presence of the Virgin Mary came back into my life, but this time with more force. Mary, the Divine Mother, presented Herself again in adolescence. At that time, I was a member of a group that prayed the Holy Rosary and that was consecrated to Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary of Fatima.

argentina marian apparition 2020

During the moments of prayer, Our Lady began to appear again,  and I would see Her while the whole group was praying. She would come, pray with us and then disappear when the group prayer finished. During this cycle, I was accompanied by that brother, very devoted to Our Lady, who instructed me until I could take the First Communion and who helped me to know love for the Virgin Mary. During the gatherings of weekly prayer that I had with the group, the Lady appeared while the entire group contemplated the mysteries of the Holy Rosary.

In this way, those silent apparitions took place, which manifested inside of the room where the group gathered to pray. The Virgin, whenever She appeared, had an appearance that was very similar to that of Our Lady of Fatima. Whenever She appeared for a few minutes, She was always moving the beads of the rosary, which She sustained with Her delicate hands.

She would appear inside of the praying room, which was the home of some of the sisters, who had built a little crystal chapel in honor of Our Lady. But out of fear that all this was an illusion of my consciousness, I never shared it with anyone. The apparitions continued week after week in silence. Our Lady would accompany us in the prayer but She never said a single word.

It was after some time that another inner sign came into my life from Our Lady, the One who was brighter than light. In that way, I used to describe Her because this was the first impression that I experienced when I was a boy. She shone more than light. That is how it remained registered in my consciousness.

The prayer group entrusted me with the task to take the image of the Virgin Mary in my arms from house to house, week after week so that everyone could receive the blessing of Our Lady of Fatima.

After having taken the First Communion, I entered the neighborhood Parrish Community and there, in a simple way, I began to serve as an altar boy during the celebration of the Holy Mass, and I also used to perform a service in the bell tower. Ar this moment another sign came from Mary, the Divine Mother.

Through the prayer group, I was led to enter a sector of the Parrish Community that was dedicated to deepening into the Marian message and in prayer, a Christian group that is known as the “Legion of Mary”.  In the Legion of Mary, made up of volunteer devotees of Our Lady, we used to have meetings to program prayer meetings with people or groups of people, as well as tasks of service and charity for the neediest neighborhood community. But the fundamental thing was that the Legion of Mary tried to maintain a spirit of ardent devotion of love and service for Mary, the Celestial Mother.

This Legion of Mary shared its service united to another part of the Christian Community that was an association called “Saint Vincent of Paul”, which used to offer service and charity to the poor amongst the poorest, donating clothes and non-perishable food to those who needed them. It was at this moment that the experience of service to others began for me.

After going through some learning, as all teenagers do, which took me a few years, another inner sign came from Mary, the Divine Mother.

This sign came accompanied by an invitation to be part of a new path that would lead me closer to an inner encounter with Christ, a path traveled by a small group of the Christian Community called the Neocatechumenal Way. In the company of a priest, that group celebrated in a more private way the Holy Mass and the same group had the task of deepening into the study of the Old and the New Testament by means of short lectures that were shared within the Liturgy of the Mass through which we tried to understand the different points of view about the reading of the Bible.

In this way the priest introduced us to the study and an understanding of the message that Christ left to humanity. It was then, at that moment, that I had for the first time a more conscious work with the sacrament of confession. It was the first experience that I had of being able to recognize that we should forgive ourselves and redeem ourselves before Christ, seeing our faults with clarity, without feeling any guilt, but rather opening the consciousness a little bit more for the learnings and tests of life.

After graduating in the basic studies and having initiated a life of a more conscious collaboration within the family, I began to seek for a more real answer about the process of the apparitions of the Virgin. Why was this happening to me? For what purpose? I could already understand that only I could see Her and I wanted to know for what purpose.

I remember that through another sister of the spiritual path I was led to meet an inner master: Mother Shimani. Thus, by the end of the year of 2006, I was taken to the arms of another mother who by then, without being conscious of it, was to whom the Virgin had entrusted the company and instruction of Friar Elias for the times that were to come. It was she who brought me to live a profound communion with Christ and even more with the Virgin Mary. It was from this meeting with Mother Shimani that my path began towards the great transformation and that was the moment when the understanding came to me about who we really are and what it is that the Celestial Father wants for each one of us.

From this moment on began the task that Mary, the Divine Mother, would request us to carry out, a path that has brought us up to here, to the year 2013.

Mother Shimani always accompanied my inner meetings with the Virgin and, little by little, she noticed the level of reality and truth that these apparitions had. The first time that Mother Shimani attended me personally, the Divine Mother appeared and, for the first time, Mother Shimani asked me to always have a notebook and a pencil to write down all that I heard, saw and the circumstances in which these manifestations unfolded. It was in this way that, each time we were together, we prayed and the Divine Mother would present Herself and give us precise instructions about what we should do. Thus it all began.

From then on, the company of Mary, the Divine Mother, became more frequent in our lives. Soon it was no longer the two of us anymore, but rather a small group of work that Mother Shimani instructed began to participate in the apparitions that up until then had been very much private. Prayer became fundamental in our lives, it was converted into the basis for this work that we were carrying out.

She was the one who showed me that there was a place in Uruguay, in the department of Paysandú, that is known as Aurora, where I had to go. Mother Shimani had already been working there for many years, in a special place where intensive works of prayer were done in the Grotto of Padre Pio.

Aurora is a place where God has placed His Heart and His Love, opening the doors of Heaven so that all who would arrive there could discover the source from where inner life is reborn in each one of us, that which we call inner healing. So then, obediently, I started to go with Mother Shimani to Aurora, where innumerable events occurred. There we used to stay in an inn that informally is called Santa Maria (Holy Mary), as its owner is very devoted to the Divine Mother.

During that whole year of 2007, we frequented this inn, in whose backyard there was a small olive grove, with around thirty trees, where Heaven and Earth unite themselves in perfect harmony. In this place, we used to pray intensively and we received the instructions of the Divine Mother. It was in this inn where in the month of July of 2007 we received the indication that we should prepare ourselves for Her to come from Heaven to Earth as She had done other times, in Lourdes as well as in Fatima and in Guadalupe. She would appear with all of Her consciousness to begin the universal task for the end of this time. This day was August 8, 2007.

She mentioned a group of seven brothers and sisters including myself, Mother Shimani, and also two sisters who today are a part of the monastery and a brother who today lives with his family in Montevideo, with whom we all maintain a fraternal union. The two other brothers chose a life that would take them through other learnings.

In this place of the olive trees, in each apparition, She gradually led us to know inner devotion and to awaken our faith concerning each one of the requests that the Divine Mother, brighter than Light, would make to us in each Apparition. The whole area of Aurora, in Paysandú, Uruguay, was silently permeated by the love of Our Divine Mother, and thus She began to weave, like a mantle, with Her humble hands, new paths in our hearts.

What most touched us internally as a group was the clarity of Her apparition, of Her Voice and of Her message at the moment of the meetings in the olive grove and also in other spaces inside of the area of Aurora. For all of the apparitions that happened in the year of 2007, the group was in a state of intense physical, mental and spiritual preparation by means of fasting and prayer so that we could feel the inner confirmation in the face of the events in which we were participating.

Until our arrival in the Community of Figueira, the apparitions of the Divine Mother were kept private in order for us to be able to have consciousness and discernment about all this movement that, through the requests of Our Lady, was quickly unfolding.

In the following months after August 2007, Mary the Virgin instructed us about some processes that were going to be carried forward and especially about the moment of getting to know José Trigueirinho, founder and member of the Community of Figueira, in Minas Gerais, Brazil.

Obeying the request of the Virgin Mary, Mother Shimani traveled to the Community of Figueira with the intention of getting to know Trigueirinho and to talk with him about our experiences in Aurora.

To our surprise, she was received with total openness in Brazil and, by the end of 2007, we and two other brothers and sisters who had participated in the Apparition of the Divine Mother moved to the Community of Figueira to have an experience there for a while. We did not know for how long it would be but we were very happy because all that the Divine Mother had told us was being fulfilled, step by step.

During the year of 2008, we lived in the Community of Figueira, and Our Lady began to appear privately to a small working group which included Trigueirinho and other brothers and sisters from Figueira. During this time the Divine Mother confirmed the request that we should return to Uruguay, now with a larger group, integrated by brothers and sisters from Figueira, to construct a Center of Healing and Prayer in the area of Aurora, a place that would become Her home in the near future. Today, Casa Redención (The House of Redemption) is a reality for all, where the Marian Center of Aurora is manifested, as Our Lady has named it.

During the period in which we were living in Figueira, the Divine Mother and other masters that accompanied the Divine Mother during the apparitions, such as Saint Francis of Assisi and Saint Clare, Saint Pio of Pietrelcina and Saint Teresa of Jesus, asked us to take one more step in our process of consecration to the Plan of God to Earth and, under rigorous guidelines transmitted by them, we began a monastic life. There we received the first indications for the formation of a Monastic Ecumenical Christian Order that would be the base of the work with Our Lord Christ Jesus and the Blessed Virgin Mary.

The entire prayer group that participated in these apparitions was invited by the Divine Mother to enter the Order, which the Hierarchy named the Grace Mercy Order. Sixteen brothers and sisters entered. Today, four years later, it has more than a hundred consecrated members manifesting monasteries in Brazil, Uruguay and Argentina.

Beginning of the Public Apparitions

On the morning of August 18, 2011, I was in Casa Redención, Paysandú, Uruguay, when Our Lady appeared and asked Friar Elías and Mother Shimani to approach the tree of the Apparitions in a field of orange trees.

During this morning the Divine Mother asked us to return to this same place for thirteen days in a row and at this same hour of the sunrise. These thirteen days were the most important ones of our lives because Our Lady called openly for the collaborators of the Light-Communities and other brothers and sisters, in general, to participate together with us in the apparitions.

During these days, in one of the apparitions of the Divine Mother, She asked us to have a painter represent, in oil paintings, the thirteen days of the apparitions, as Our Mother would then reveal to us signs that they should remain registered forever. During these thirteen days, She communicated to us the face with which She had been revealing Herself to us. She told us: “I Am Mary, Mother of the Divine Conception of the Trinity”.

This was an event that changed the inner life of all, as it was the moment in which the Divine Mother opened the definitive door of Heaven for all in this time.

The month of September came and we were in the Community of Figueira, in the State of Minas Gerais, Brazil. On one of the days of September, Our Mother appeared again and asked us to go up to the Hill of Apparitions, previously known as Crystal Hill, situated in one of the areas of Figueira.

In this place, Mary, the Divine Mother, appeared for seventeen days in a row and sometimes twice a day in order to transmit Her message to the world. These seventeen days also remained engraved in our consciousnesses because Our Lady poured Her Graces upon all of us.

From then on the apparitions began to be public, that is, for whoever wanted to be present in the encounter with Our Lady. After these seventeen days of apparitions, the Divine Mother told us that She was going to appear on every 12th and 13th of each month in Casa Redención (The House of Redemption), in Uruguay, and every 25th and 26th of each month in the Community of Figueira, in Carmo da Cachoeira, Minas Gerais, Brazil, for an indefinite time.

In the month of November, we traveled to Medjugorje, in Bosnia-Herzegovina, to make a spiritual retreat of prayer.  In Bosnia-Herzegovina, Our Lady has been appearing to six visionaries since the year 1981.

Our arrival in Merdugorje at the request of the Virgin was for us to recognize the dimension of Her Marian movement in the world and to understand that which She wanted to do.

Also at Her request, we have visited Lourdes, France, and Fatima, Portugal, with the same objective.

In the morning of November 15, 2011, around 9 a.m. while the group that had traveled was in prayer in a location at the base of the hill of apparitions of Medjugorje, Our Lady appeared and transmitted to us that from that day on, with immense Grace for all of humanity, She would give us a message for each day for a while.

From then, up until today, countless things have happened. The Divine Mother has filled us with Graces and we have surrendered our lives to Her task and to that of Her Son.

The Virgin Mary has become the epicenter of love and devotion of our lives, the safe path that takes us to Her Son, the Christ. She invites us to be permanently in Her Heart and in the Heart of Her Son.

Christ Jesus

I remember that when I was a boy Jesus left within me a very strong seal of His Presence, which has accompanied me always. The seal was reactivated in this time when He began His work with me.

When I was little, about seven years old, during a stay in the house of my maternal grandmother, who was then very ill, I had a brief but unforgettable experience with the Sacred Heart. She was bedridden and I only approached her in silence. Her devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus was very strong and sincere. On one of those days, she asked me to put near her bed a picture of Jesus to which she had been praying for her whole life. This picture was placed at the head of her bed.

On one of those days, I entered the bedroom and when I entered through the doorway I encountered a large image of the Sacred Heart that had a written caption at the bottom that said: “Look at Me and I will be with you”.

This image remained engraved in my consciousness and accompanied me for a long time. When I saw Christ Jesus for the first time in this current cycle, I instantly recognized Him. I felt the peace that had been transmitted by the picture that I had contemplated when I was a boy and that had left that seal within my consciousness.

In the month of April of 2012, at the Marian Center of Aurora, during the Holy Week, through an inner voice, the Master Christ Jesus requested that, as a group, we prepare ourselves to celebrate a special meeting with Him during seven days in a row, at three p.m.

Therefore we prepared ourselves as He had announced to us that we were going to spiritually participate in the seven days of the Passion that His Consciousness lived in the depths of His Sacred Heart.

He indicated that Friar Elias and Mother Shimani should retreat to the prayer room of the Monastery of the Assumption and of the Holy Spirit to pray while the rest of the members of the Monastery supported the work from somewhere else.

We prayed continuously for an hour to wait for Him. Little by little, a sign from Heaven began to manifest in a form of a vision, and a bright light appeared and shone the sacred garments of the Master. Afterward appeared His bare Feet and then His Hands, radiating light, and finally, His Face lit up with love.

He told us: “My dear ones, I come to reveal to you the seven days of the Passion that My Heart lived…”.

Thus, day by day, during that week, we were being participants in instructions that the Master Christ Jesus proclaimed during each Apparition. He asked us to transmit His Words after the seventh day in a study that Mother Shimani would give called “Seven days with the Master Jesus of Nazareth”.

During the end of December 2012, while the monthly Apparitions of the Divine Mother were taking place at the Marian Center of Aurora, Uruguay, I remember that in a private prayer Our Lord Jesus appeared to me, as in other times, in an unexpected way.

In three different moments and days, before the beginning of 2013, He approached, requesting that I prepare myself to soon receive Him. At first, I did not understand the call well until, on January 5, 2013, Christ Jesus finally appeared and announced His call forcefully, clearly and with precision.

During the ecumenical communion of January 5, 2013, in Casa Redención (The House of Redemption), the Sacred and Glorified Heart of Jesus appeared to transmit, from this day on, through daily Apparitions, His Message of return to the world.

The history of the daily Apparitions of Master Jesus began from the date previously mentioned and continues until today. Every day at three p.m., the hour of the Divine Mercy, He transmits a daily message of instruction for the world, called “Daily messages of Christ Jesus”.

At three p.m. every day, Jesus especially requested that Friar Elias pray a hundred and fifty beads of the Chaplet of the Divine Mercy, to wait for His Sacred visit from Heaven, and He also indicated to us that during this exercise of prayer two brothers or sisters from the Light- Communities or from the Monasteries be present to receive Him.

It has been this way, day by day, throughout these months of 2013.

On some special days, appointed by Him, Master Jesus has transmitted His Message to all through public Apparitions, such as the ones that have happened in the Community of Casa Redención (the House of Redemption) in Uruguay and in the Community of Figueira in Brazil.

In the following, we will describe the experience that we lived on January 5, 2013, when this daily task with Our Lord began.

During the Prayer, before finishing the Orandium of the Passion and Transfiguration of Jesus, He was already present.

He appeared with a group of twelve angels. Each one of them had in their hands a chalice that was offered to all of us. The angels wore luminous white tunics, forming a half Moon behind the Master. They had short golden hair.

While this image manifested itself to us we felt the presence of Christ, but at this moment we still could not see Him. Soon, when we sang the last part of the song "Christ the Redeemer" and of the song "Christ Returns", He made Himself visible.

He appeared in the same way that the Divine Mother appears. He descended from above as a light, and when He came closer to us He manifested Himself, and we could see Him clearly.

And when He appeared, He drew, with His right hand, as a blessing, the sign of the cross, and He said:

Praised be the Lord!

He wore a white tunic, His hair came down to His shoulders, as in the image of the Merciful Christ. He wore a golden mantle and He was barefoot. Upon His face, He had a beautiful and soft smile, and His eyes, of light sky-blue color, shone. Upon His Chest, we could clearly see His Sacred Heart, and around It there was a circle formed by twelve six-pointed stars. His arms were outstretched to the side of His body, a little bit open, with His palms facing us, and from them, there was light emanating. From His heart came two rays, that were of a turquoise sky-blue color, like a crystal.

Behind Him, there were several open Heavens and His Feet were upon clouds. He said that He was showing us the face of His Return, the Sacred and Glorified Heart of Jesus.

Then He remained for quite some time in silence, observing us, contemplating us. It seemed that our essences were transparent before His eyes. He let us understand that He could read all of our feelings at the same time, that all was in evidence before Him.

At this moment, we did not know how the task He had asked us to do was going to be carried out. He was present and we were only observing Him, we did not know what He would say, until He started to talk and transmit a message, in which He said that from January 5, 2013, onward, we were going to receive His message daily, for one year, until January 5, 2014.

A Marian apparition has been approved in Argentina – and it's a big deal

Rejoice, for God is with you.” The Virgin Mary asked Gladys to go look for a statue that had been blessed by a Pope and was forgotten away in a church. “It’s not as simple as some of the other apparitions that just draw people closer to Christ… there are some dire warnings as well.” Father René Laurentin, an expert on Marian apparitions, recounted the apparitions’ messages in his book, “An Appeal from Mary in Argentina.” At one point, Mary said, “Many hearts do not accept my invitation to prayer and to conversion. That is why the work of the devil is growing and expanding.” The warnings said that mankind is “in the process of falling in to a progressive self-destruction” and the Virgin Mary represents hope. Man’s conversion is necessary.” “Today I warn the world, for the world is not aware: souls are in danger. Many are lost,” Jesus said in a 1987 apparition. “Few will find salvation unless they accept me as their Savior. My mother must be accepted. My mother must be heard in the totality of her messages. The world must discover the richness she brings to Christians.” “The children of sin will grow up in sin if their unbelief increases.

“Usually they wait until the messages end or the visionary dies, but in this particular case they decided to go ahead with the approval.” Bishop Cardelli explained the process that led him to make his latest decision. Are they of supernatural origin?” “The answers to these questions gave me the certainty that the fruits are real and positive and go beyond mere human action,” the bishop stated. He said the decree is “seeking the greater glory of God and the good of our Church.” Accompanying the bishop’s decree is the presentation of the book “The Spiritual School of Our Lady of the Rosary of San Nicolas.” The book says the most important teachings in the Virgin Mary’s messages are that “she offers us for our adherence to everything He tells us, because He is the culmination of revelation.” “Finally, and as Our Holy Mother has requested, I implore Heaven in the name of the entire diocese, that she be forever the Queen and Lady of San Nicolas de los Arroyos,” the bishop concluded. Beware of So-Called ‘Church Approved’ Coronavirus Prevention

argentina marian apparition 2020

Claims of apparition endorsement aside, such oils have been used for centuries in witchcraft for “protection.”

By Susan Brinkmann

Alleged revelations from Our Lady to a Costa Rican woman that call for the use of essential oils to prevent infection by the coronavirus have gone viral on the internet. What should Catholics make of revelations such as these?

The “seer,” named Luz de Maria de Bonilla, allegedly received a message from Our Lady on June 3, 2016, which gave instructions about the use of an essential oil blend which she called the Oil of the Good Samaritan, to be used as a preventive measure against infectious outbreaks. She said the vision also recommended that people ingest a raw clove of garlic every morning or to use oil of oregano because “these two are excellent antibiotics.”

On Jan. 28, 2020, once again Our Lady is alleged to have told the seer: “Great pestilences, plagues generated by unknown viruses are advancing upon humanity. Use the oil of the Good Samaritan as protection, faced with a case of a highly contagious disease where you live — the quantity of the head of a pin on the earlobes will suffice. If the number of those infected increases, you should put it on both sides of your neck and on the wrists of both hands…”

The oils contained in the Good Samaritan oil are cinnamon, cloves, rosemary, lemon and eucalyptus. This is the same recipe as a popular essential oil blend known as “Thieves Oil” which is associated with the legend of four thieves who robbed the bodies of victims of the Bubonic plague but managed to escape infection while using these ingredients. Such oils have been used for centuries in witchcraft for “protection” and are touted by essential oil distributors who claim they improves the immune system and protect people from infections such as the flu and viruses.

Adding credence to the alleged messages is an imprimatur given by a bishop named Msgr. Juan Abelardo Mata Guavara, bishop of Esteli, Nicaragua, who approved the messages received by this seer which occurred from 2009-2017. There is no indication that Msgr. Mata — or any other Church authority — approved the 2020 message recommending these alternatives for use against COVID-19.

Even though the Church has rendered no decision as to the supernatural nature of the revelations, the messages have gone viral on the internet, with many Catholics hyping the oils as being a “Church approved” method of protecting themselves against the coronavirus.

As convincing as it all may sound, these revelations are raising eyebrows because they appear to contradict Church teaching found in the Ethical and Religious Directives for Healthcare Services. Based upon Pope John Paul II’s encyclical letter On the Value and Inviolability of Human Life (Evangelium Vitae), the Directives state: “A person has a moral obligation to use ordinary or proportionate means of preserving his or her life.” This is particularly true in the case of life-threatening or communicable diseases.

As Kevin Rickert, Ph.D., associate professor of philosophy at St. Mary’s University of Minnesota, told us, “the crux of this issue is the distinction between ordinary and extraordinary care” and explains these distinctions as they regard alternatives in his article, “Alternative Medicine and the Duty to Employ Ordinary Means.”

Ordinary means are those treatments that are commonly considered ordinary for the preservation of human life such as food, shelter, avoidance of unnecessary bodily danger and the use of accepted medical interventions when needed.

Alternative medicine, such as essential oils, is typically defined as treatments that have not been scientifically tested or have not met the standards of what would be considered accepted medical interventions. This is why Our Lady’s alleged recommendation to use essential oils to prevent contagion is suspect.

Ongoing research into the use of essential oils for health care has found some products to be useful for general well-being, but even industry insiders admit that there is no scientific evidence to support their use in the way Our Lady allegedly prescribed.

Speaking on behalf of Dr. Russel Osguthorpe, an infectious disease physician and chief medical officer for essential oil supplier doTERRA, spokesman Kevin Wilson told Salon in March 2020: “doTERRA recognizes essential oils have profound health and wellness benefits, but we do not claim that our products prevent, treat or cure illnesses or diseases, including COVID-19.”

If this is the case, why would Our Lady instruct us to use something that is neither scientifically proven nor in accord with local public health policy to protect ourselves during a serious public health emergency? Why would she give messages that do not include at least a recommendation to obey local health policy or to seek sound medical advice?

Experts such as Michael O’Neill, author of ‘Virgin, Mother, Queen’ and creator of MiracleHunter.com, have doubts that Our Lady gave these instructions.

“While St. Bernadette was pointed to the waters of Lourdes by Our Lady, typically Mary doesn’t recommend natural remedies or flout medical advice,” O’Neill said. “This appears to be a non-standard request of Mary in an apparition and therefore casts some doubts on the validity of these apparitions.”

As for the imprimatur, O’Neill explains that an imprimatur does not mean that a supernatural event occurred. It merely states that the messages are free of doctrinal error. Such a statement is usually given by the ordinary of a place where an alleged Marian apparition is taking place. Because the Costa Rican-born Luz de Maria currently lives in Argentina, it is unclear why an imprimatur was given by a bishop from Nicaragua. Attempts to seek clarification from Bishop Mata and Argentinian church authorities are ongoing.

“Getting wrapped up in any unapproved apparition can cause great challenges to one’s faith and it is important to remember that the centrality of our faith should be found in the words and works of Jesus Christ in the Gospels, not in alleged apparitions,” O’Neill advises. “If the faithful find that the messages help them draw closer to Christ, the messages can certainly provide a great spiritual benefit but likely not secret potions for warding off viruses.”

This advice is common sense to most Catholics, so why are these revelations making so many inroads into the Catholic population?

It could be due to a movement among some Catholics to regard “natural” health care means as better because they are “gifts from God.” However, as Dr. Rickert warns, this notion is “a trick” because “everything that exists comes from God,” including science.

Another possible reason for the embrace of alternative methods to prevent COVID-19 could be the natural anxiety caused by the pandemic.

“Even for religious people, divine ‘revelations’ promising healing through essential oils or other formulas may seem to open up ‘magic solutions’ and a way for us to ‘stay in control,’ rather than confronting our fears and entering into a deeper spiritual acceptance of the Divine Plan, a plan that may include passing through the valley of death,” says Father Tadeusz Pacholczyk, Ph.D., Director of Education at the National Catholic Bioethics Center.

“With respect to COVID-19, we need to rely on properly conducted research studies, rather than claims of visionaries, as we seek to develop drugs or treatments that will offer protective or therapeutic benefits. God intends for us to use science and medicine to push back disease, but we must always temper our push for survival with a sobriety about the finality, inevitability and unpredictability of death. The prospect of the ‘Thief in the Night’ should command more of our attention than any ‘Thieves Oil.’”
