Ghost story for kids: Yost the ghost
That night Yost, the ghost, went out for the first time to walk the corridors of the castle. Host had no experience, he was a novice ghost. He had inherited that dilapidated castle from his uncle Lecter, the specter who is mean, obscene and like to demean. Thank goodness it was it was still clean!
Yost, on the other hand, was a very arrogant ghost. But his uncle Lecter, the specter, had left him no decent clothes in the closet. So he wore a simple white sheet.
He was very restless! It was his first night on the job! Yost, the ghost, held a candle in his hand and dragged an iron ball attached to the ankle by a shackle. His bones sounded like a rattle!
Suddenly, he went pale. Pale under the sheet. At the end of the gallery was a little girl. How nerve racking! He was going to give his first scare and he wanted it to be perfect. Yost backed behind the corner. He tied his sheet, polished his ball and shackle, gargled and trained his voice a little.
“DO, RE, MI, FA, SOL, LA, SI, DOOOO”
When he was ready, he took a deep breath and began to walk down the gallery, ululating, raising his arms, dragging his chains, making a face like a bad ghost (although you couldn’t see him because he was under the sheet).
The girl saw him approaching, but didn’t budge a hair on his jerkin. It was clear that Yost, the ghost, didn’t scare her one bit. . Yost was strained, pained, drained…. And ashamed! He blew his boogers with the beak of the sheet. Pearl, the girl, looked at him with disdain.
“You wouldn’t scare even a mouse! Get out of here, newbie! I said get out of here new! -said the arrogant girl”
Yost, the ghost, couldn’t take it anymore. As a novice ghost he was very overwhelmed, so he burst into tears. He cried so hard and so loud that, within minutes, his sheet was floating in a puddle on the floor.
Pearl, the girl, picked up the sheet and gave it to the laundry maid. Yost was dipped in burning hot water, filled with soap, scrubbed on the washboard and rinsed with ice water. As if that wasn’t enough, they twisted him to wring him out. What a beating! Then they hung him from a rope in the sun, between a pair of polo shirts and panties. What a disgrace!
The next day, the maid picked up Yost, the ghost, from the rope. She starched him, perfumed him and ironed him. Not a wrinkle was left on him – who knew he was 1,200 years old!
Yost, the ghost walked the castle’s corridors again that night. He went up to the battlements, down to the dungeons, discovered secret passages and hidden spiral staircases. He felt beautiful, lustrous, pompous… so much so that he thought he no longer fit in that ruined castle. So, he hung a sign from the lift gate, a notice that read: “Ghost needed.”
And so, without any baggage, he moved into the luxurious palace where his friend Fatima, the anima, lived. Who, by the way, told him to stay with her forever because he was very, very, handsome.
Ghost story to read… and monsters, vampires, dragons…
Surely your little one will like this ghost story for kids . If so, this is great news: we have many more children’s stories to read and listen to on our blog . There you will find stories of witches, monsters, dragons, vampires, zombies…. Stories, all of them, terrifyingly funny.
Can you imagine if it was the witch of Hansel and Gretel who told how the story really happened? What if the monster who lives inside the closet was terrified because he believes that a child lives outside the closet? You might be surprised to learn the story of a princess who acts as bait for her beloved dragon to feed on brave knights? Numerous stories in which we change the point of view to make your child smile and that teach that things are not always as we have been taught they are. We hope you enjoy it!
Eight Podcasts for Kids Craving Scary Stories | Kidcasts

Chills and thrills for young listeners.

What makes a satisfying scary story, and why are podcasts an ideal format? Podcasts let imaginations run wild, with intense music and stirring sound effects ratcheting up the fright factor. You can listen while walking through a cemetery or somewhere grim and ghastly and be completely immersed.
Audio is also a superb medium to learn how to tell a scary story by tuning into narrators’ inflections, pauses, and distinct character voices. Listening digitally allows you to stop and start the story until you have it down. Once you’ve rehearsed, why not share one of these tales in your own backyard or at a park under the stars? It’s is a stellar way to practice performance skills, whether the tale is about a haunted house, sea monsters, dark fairytales, or other creepy things featured on our playlist.

Girl Tales “The Princess and the Musicians of Maple Street” Ages 8-12— Girl Tales ’s executive producer/host Rebecca Cunningham and her diverse team create episodes that are a twist on feminist fairy tales for a new generation. In this particular tale blazer, protagonists Kitty, Birdie, and Turtle are preparing for the battle of the bands and need a rehearsal space. They start practicing in an abandoned mansion, but soon realize that the space is haunted. Things get slightly spooky when Cunningham challenges listeners to make their own spooky voice; otherwise, it's a gentle tale. One kid interviewer, Abby, takes the reins and interviews story author Amy Gijsbers van Wijk about the gratifying tale.
Grimm, Grimmer, Grimmest “ The Glass Coffin” Ages 8-12—Adam Gidwitz is best known for “The Tale of Dark and Grimm” series and his Newbery Honor book The Inquisitor’s Tale . Gidwitz also narrates this eerie fairytale podcast series, based on “Dark and Grimm”; his master storytelling style translates well to this realm. This episode is a spinoff of a Rumpelstiltskin-like fairytale. The genius of this podcast is that it also includes audio clips of Gidwitz interacting with classroom kids listening to Gidwitz tell the stories, and Gidwitz asks for their thoughts as the tale moves forward. The podcast isn’t too scary overall, though on the scale of Grimm, Grimmer, and Grimmest, this particular episode is Grimmest. At one point, Gidwitz suggests listeners “turn down the volume and count to five” if they need a break, a good strategy for grade-school listeners. Perfect for fans of adventurous storytelling with a dark twist.
Unspookable “ Episode 24: Kraken” Ages 8 Up— Unspookable stories center on creepy monsters and mysterious objects, favorite reading topics for kids, and the lore surrounding them in pop culture and global cultural history. Some of the best parts of the episodes are when kids share their thoughts, making it particularly appealing to young listeners. This episode is about the Kraken sea monster, frequently compared to a giant squid, and sometimes thought to be as big as a ship or an island. It explores references from Norwegian history from fishermen and sailors, the novel 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea , superhero comics, and more. While discussing what the Kraken might look like, and what is known and unknown about it… since there’s much to be explored still when it comes to the Earth’s seas.
The Creeping Hour “Meet the Creeps” Ages 10-14—Apparently, listening to too many creepy stories can turn you into a creep—at least according to NPR’s fiction podcast The Creeping Hour, from WGBH and director Elie Lichtschein. It’s a well-written scripted audio drama with an anthology of episodes. In this first one, listeners hear about a slew of kids whose only thing in common is that they like to tell scary stories. That’s how they turned into monsters. The sound effects and music are modern and attention-grabbing, and the voice-acting polished. Recommended for older grade schoolers and middle schoolers; the stories can be a bit spine-tingling with perplexing conclusions.
Book Power for Kids “The Whispering Skull” Ages 11 Up—This podcast squad knows how to pick books with real kid appeal. Why? Because many of them are children. Book Power for Kids stars family members Chaska, Leilani, and Mirabel Power, with their dad, Brennen. The character voices in their book reviews add high-spirited merriment for listeners. In this episode, the squad picked the book The Whispering Skull by Jonathan Stroud, the second title in the “Lockwood and Co.” series, about ghost hunters in London. The family reviews the book, with the kids providing a summary and offering analysis, and then reads from it together. It’s a brilliant example of book reviews in podcast format and a good place to find a mix of recommended reads.
Snap Judgment Presents: Spooked “ Sharp Tooth Boy ” Ages 13 Up— Snap Judgment podcast host Glynn Washington serves up another successful podcast that “features true-life supernatural stories, told firsthand by people who can barely believe it happened themselves.” Washington sets the mood for each story in intriguing ways; These intimate tales brim with interesting personal details that make them feel very close to home. In this episode about a ghost boy with long, bloody teeth, the suspenseful storytelling and unexpected twists keeps you wondering what’s going to happen next. Fortunately, it ends on an upbeat note after much it turns your stomach into knots. The devil presents in the episode at minute 25:00 until minute 26:00.
Lore “Episode 143: Inside Information” Ages 14 Up—The award-winning Lore has been around for many years and has won plenty of recognition from the media. This episode about “true-life scary stories” focuses on ghost stories from folklore and the inspiration behind literary characters such as Charles Dickens's Ebenezer Scrooge and Homer’s Odysseus. Aaron Mahnke, host of the well-researched nonfiction podcast, knows how to select fascinating stories. Excellent listening for fans of history, especially those drawn to evergreen ominous tales. Lore has its own Amazon Prime series.
Mabel “Episode One: The Letters” Ages 16 Up—If you're looking for a unique, eclectic take on how to tell scary stories, this is it! In the introductory episode and those that follow, it’s a one-way conversation between a healthcare worker leaving messages on the voicemail of her client’s estranged granddaughter. Tension builds as the worker divulges more and more about her situation and why she is not sure where to turn. With acting and writing by duo Becca De La Rosa and Mabel Martin, there are 40 episodes, so there’s plenty to entertain. Note: Later episodes include language some may find objectionable and mention some violence.

There is a general belief that books give a wider room for imaginations - even wider than the room that watching a movie affords you, and truthfully so. These tales, when listened to in the dark, will leave you with much to imagine - an arm covered in goose bumps and the back of your neck with all the hackles on their ends. The curtains you see might not be curtains. The mirrors, too, might become home to many faces and the old man by the road might not be what you think he is. Welcome to the home of scary and macabre tales.

Home » Articles » 10 Scary and Not-So-Scary Kids Audiobooks for Halloween

Some people love to be scared at Halloween. I was never one of them. While for my friends, October means breaking out frightening stories of ghosts and ghouls, I prefer my Halloween listens to be cozy and maybe slightly spooky, but definitely on the tamer side of terrifying.
Here are some atmospheric stories perfect for chilly fall nights to get kids in the mood for Halloween—without being too scary.

A TEENY TINY HALLOWEEN by Lauren L. Wohl, read by Elisabeth Rodgers Ages 4-6
Listeners will settle in for a Halloween-focused story that is fun and not too frightening. Narrator Elisabeth Rodgers quietly yet firmly emphasizes the words “teeny tiny,” while gentle music and sound effects of rustling leaves evoke the autumn night. What will the teeny tiny woman find under the huge pile of leaves? Halloween surprises await!

LOS GATOS BLACK ON HALLOWEEN by Marisa Montes, read by Maria Conchita Alonso Ages 4-6
The spirit of the Halloween season is evoked in this fun and evocative audio rendition by Maria Conchita Alonso. Background sounds of yowling cats and groaning monsters will inspire kids’ imaginations, and an array of Spanish words fills the story.

IVY AND BEAN AND THE GHOST THAT HAD TO GO by Annie Barrows, Read by Cassandra Morris Ages 6+
With her youthful tones, Cassandra Morris captures the voices of second-graders Ivy and Bean, who believe they have discovered a ghost in the girls’ bathroom at school. Morris’s narration delivers all the humor and drama of the girls’ scheme to expel the ghost with their imaginative exorcism.

BUNNICULA by James Howe and Deborah Howe, read by Victor Garber Ages 6+
When vegetables turn up drained of their juices and the new pet bunny is observed sleeping all day and prowling outside his cage at night, Chester the cat suspects the rabbit of being a vampire. Chester’s attempts to prove his suspicions end in uproariously funny stories. Victor Garber is exceptional as he gives each human and animal character a distinct voice and identity.

THE GHOST IN THE MIRROR by John Bellairs, Read by George Guidall Ages 8+
From the author of The House with the Clock in its Walls , this mystery takes listeners 200 years back in time as the witch Mrs. Zimmerman and Rose Rita encounter hexes, black and white magic, ghosts, and sorcery of all kinds. Guidall depicts the delightful heroines as effectively as the frightening evil characters. This charming and beloved Gothic ghost story will appeal to the whole family.

GOOSEBUMPS HORRORLAND: Revenge of the Living Dummy by R.L. Stine, read by Alissa Hunnicutt Ages 10+
Fans of the Goosebumps movies will want to listen to the HorrorLand audiobook series, but while they are silly and fun like the movies, younger listeners may find them a bit scary. The series depicts a group of kids who enter a terrifying theme park called HorrorLand. There, the children must learn to stand together, forging unlikely allies, if they’re to make it out alive. The narrators in each episode deliver convincing accounts of children caught in the spookiest situations, and appropriate sound effects and music ratchet up the experience.

THE JUMBIES by Tracey Baptiste, read by Robin Miles Ages 10+
When a beautiful woman named Severine bewitches Corinne’s father, and evil creatures attack her village, 11-year-old Corinne and her friends try to help. Through friendship, loyalty, and bravery, Corinne discovers she has a special power. Elements from traditional Haitian folk tales give this evil witch story a multicultural twist, and narrator Robin Miles is at home voicing characters from the diverse cultural backgrounds. See also the sequel Rise of the Jumbies.

THE GRAVEYARD BOOK by Neil Gaiman, read by Derek Jacobi, Robert Madge, Clare Corbett, Miriam Margolyes, Andrew Scott, Julian Rhind-Tutt, Emilia Fox, Reece Shearsmith, Lenny Henry, Neil Gaiman, and an Ensemble Cast Ages 10+
This macabre Newbery Medal winner tells the story of Bod, a young boy who is raised in a cemetery by ghosts after his parents are murdered. A brilliant ensemble cast transports listeners to the eerie world of Bod and his graveyard family.

SMALL SPACES by Katherine Arden, Read by Renee Dorian Ages 10+
It is a sunny October day when Ollie steals a book from a hysterical woman trying to destroy it. As Ollie reads of a long-ago devil’s bargain, she realizes it is the true history of the farm where her class is on a field trip. On the way home, the school bus breaks down, and the creepy driver advises: “Best get moving. At nightfall they’ll come for the rest of you.” Dorian gives the driver a gruff monotone that makes him even more terrifying in this atmospheric horror story where scarecrows come to life, and the “smiling man” devil lurks in the center of a corn maze.

HOODOO by Ronald L. Smith, read by Ron Butler Ages 10+
At age 12, Hoodoo is the only one of his family in rural Alabama who can’t cast even a simple spell. But when a creepy Stranger comes to town, Hoodoo begins to feel his first thrill of occult power. The chilling supernatural plot will appeal to readers who like the scarier elements of Harry Potter. Narrator Ron Butler conveys the naïve playfulness of 12-year-old Hoodoo, but is also frighteningly believable as the deep-voiced Stranger. Spine-tingling and comical by turns, Ronald L. Smith’s atmospheric winner of a 2016 Coretta Scott King Award is terrific family listening.
Pumpkin painting by Sonja Cole’s daughter.
