YachtMedia…

YachtMedia is the trading name for the Yachting Public Relations enterprise run by Peter Franklin.

YachtMedia writes for a number of international yachting publications, and produces publicity materials for selected clients.

With over 50 years in the nautical business and 30 years writing and editing marine content, YachtMedia’s senior partner Peter Franklin, has a wealth of experience and a comprehensive range of contacts. As well as being connected with all branches of the specialised yachting media, he has regular contact with the various disciplines that drive the industry, from superyacht captains, to engineers, yacht builders, surveyors, naval architects, designers and sail makers etc.

We are passionate campaigners for the future health of the world’s oceans and waterways. As such our content provision for the past seven years has focused exclusively on environmental sustainability in the marine world. During this time we helped to organise online and offline content (blogs / sustainability panel discussions / forums) for METSTRADE, the world’s largest Marine Equipment Trade show.

This is a focus that we plan to continue with into the future, whilst actively supporting some of the most dedicated not-for-profit organisations who are striving to ‘make the difference’ for the future survival of the planet. To name but a few: Plastic Soup Foundation, Blue Marine Foundation, Mission Blue, Save the Med, Clean Boating, Cleanwave (both Mallorca based), Sea Shepherd, Sailors for the Sea, Clean Marinas…etc etc.

Career Highlights:

Previously Managing Editor of The Islander, the longest running English language yachting publication in the Mediterranean. Peter Franklin produced 85 issues of the magazine over a period of seven years.

Before that as Regional Editor of Communitor the corporate magazine for Unitor Ships Service, Peter provided technical and social content over a fifteen year period from wherever he was based; Firstly in the UK, then USA, Singapore and Rotterdam. Unitor was a 100 year old company and the largest technical ship supplier in the world, when it was successfully taken over by the Norwegian Wilhelmsen Shipping Group in 2005.

Qualification as a shipwright / boat-builder and later as a marine coatings inspector, together with an assignment to Lloyds Register of Shipping to help establish a ground breaking corrosion protection scheme, gave Peter a thorough technical background before he launched into nautical journalism.

Always living and working near the sea, Peter has been able to pursue his motor boating hobby over many years, owning several boats up to 12 metres and chartering in The Caribbean and Australia. He has also gained an RYA Powerboat Instructors (level 2) certificate and holds an RYA/MCA commercially endorsed advanced powerboat license. In 2002 he received the special honour to be recognised as a certified Freeman of the River Thames.

During his time in Palma de Mallorca Peter was skipper of the official photo/chase boat for the Palma Superyacht Cup and the Oyster Mediterranean regatta over a period of several years. He also helped form the EU Working Group of the Balearic Islands Nautical Business Association (AENIB) for which he acted as secretary and press officer for five years.

With this combination of practical nautical industry experience and professional journalism, Peter is able to write on a wide range of marine and yachting topics with precise understanding of, and empathy with the subject matter.

My portfolio of over 100 articles on the subject of marine sustainability can be found here.

Peter, thanks for the ‘like’ on my latest View From the Mallorca Pier. I’ve had a look at your Yachtmedia website and it’s excellent. I’m delighted you’re now well set up and up and running. Best wishes & please keep in touch

Hello Hugh, thanks for the words of encouragement. I must say I find the WordPress application excellent, it really suits my purpose with my new set up. I’ve been commissioned by Practical Boat Owner, and IBI News for a few articles (both part of IPC Media) and have a few other jobs keeping me ticking over. I have made a note to order your new book, it looks great. But I dare not do it until I have finished wading through ‘The Swarm’ by Frank Schatzing. Its a hefty 900 pager, and I’m quite enjoying it, but don’t seem to get enough time to get to the end! I gave up trying to read books on the iPad, it just didn’t gel with me. So I will order a proper version of your novel, and will continue to be a Luddite for as long as they keep printing books! All the best, Peter.

The son of Asia's richest man is getting married in the culmination of a monthslong, star-studded, multi-event mega wedding this weekend, with the main event kicking off Friday. Anant Ambani, the son of Resilience Industries Chairman Mukesh Ambani, and longtime girlfriend Radhika Merchant have an epic guest list that includes John Cena, Kim Kardashian, Mark Zuckerberg, Bollywood stars, famous cricket players, politicians and a who's who from around the globe.

The wedding festivities kicked off in March with events attended by Zuckerberg and his wife, Priscilla Chan, Ivanka Trump and her husband, Jared Kushner and Bill Gates.

Rihanna famously performed at the March party, a three-day event that included 1,200 guests, according to Reuters.  The bride and groom also served dinner to 51,000 villagers in Jamnagar.

The Photographs That Made Trump an Incarnation of Defiance

In video footage, everything was pandemonium. It was still images that defined the attack and its aftermath.

  • Share full article

Donald Trump, a line of bright blood across his face, raises his fist toward a crowd as four people in dark suits usher him off a stage.

By Jason Farago

If we had seen the attack on former President Donald J. Trump only through television footage, it would have appeared shocking, but also chaotic and muddled. The candidate dives to the rostrum after an assassin’s bullet grazes his ear. Secret Service agents jump in. He gets back on his feet, gestures to the crowd and is rushed out to cheers.

The still images of the assassination attempt — by Doug Mills of The New York Times , and by photographers from The Associated Press and Reuters — tell another story. Blood running from Mr. Trump’s ear to his lips testifies to how close the former president had come to death. His raised fist offers a highly legible refusal to capitulate. To the television cameras, everything was pandemonium. In the lens of the still camera, the horror of the attack was translated into embodiments of authority, defiance and near martyrdom.

I understand the tendency to hunt for visual analogies when extraordinary events like this take place. The American flag billowing behind Mr. Trump’s bloodied face in some of the photos may superficially recall a Romantic tradition of bloodied national heroes, real or allegorical. A reverse image bot without much horse power could easily match them to Eugène Delacroix’s “Liberty Leading the People” (1830), in which a woman embodying France raises a flag in her right arm, or John Singleton Copley’s “Death of Major Peirson” (1782—84), a history painting of a victorious general dying beneath the British flag. The triangular formation of Secret Service agents seems to have put quite a few people in mind of the photo of the flag being raised at Iwo Jima.

People like these visual analogues because they offer a pedigree to news imagery. They promise to assign distinction to outliers in our perpetual image stream, and to inscribe the past in the present. But as a moral matter, I have always bridled against the temptation to treat images of suffering ( two people are dead, and Mr. Trump and two others are injured ) as objects of aesthetic judgment. And analogies like these underestimate a larger change in how we encounter images today, where even the most “iconic” picture is something mutable and unfixed.

The video footage captured the chaos in real time: Mr. Trump on the ground for a full minute, not rising until the Secret Service shouts “We’re clear, we’re clear.” (As agents try to hustle Mr. Trump away, a microphone catches him asking about getting his shoes; an agent advises him to hold something to his bleeding head.) Then he stops, pausing to raise and pump his fist — once considered a left-wing gesture, a symbol of Communist resistance or Black Power. At the distance of the television cameras, the fist functioned like the thumbs-up sign that injured football players flash for live television, a made-for-TV expression of survival.

But to the still camera, the fist had a more warlike aspect, suggesting fearlessness and indomitability. The photos say “I am safe; I am strong,” but more powerfully they say “I know I must look like I am safe; I know I must look like I am strong.”

The force of the photographs, in other words, rests not in what they depict politically but what they convey about political depiction, which Mr. Trump seems to understand better than any other political figure of his day. After two weeks when the incumbent president has been in the spotlight for his appearance of frailty , Mr. Trump had the instinct, amid mortal danger, to consider how everything would look.

Images traveled slowly when Presidents Lincoln and Garfield were shot in the 19th century, when it fell to illustrators to depict, or confect, what happened to the assassinated head of state. When Presidents Ford and Reagan faced attempts on their lives in the 20th century, sending images via wire still required cumbersome portable transmitters. Now the digital camera is its own broadcast medium, and each image it produces can become an unmoored vector of advocacy, opposition, propaganda and lulz.

Mr. Trump’s bloodied face and raised fist may appear on the cover of Time , but the magazine’s circulation is dwarfed by the shares and reposts that have already propelled these images worldwide. On my smartphone, the news photographs quickly became memes in shockingly bad taste (the bloodied ear becoming, for example, a reaction to hearing the new Katy Perry album) even before the originals had reached the television screen. The image of authority also invites its own parody; that is the secret of its strength.

The 45th (and would-be 47th) president’s deepest admirers have often portrayed him as a superman. In memes and merchandise he has posed as an all-conquering hero, far removed from the reality of the debate stage or the defendant’s box . By Sunday afternoon Mr. Trump’s campaign had blasted out a fund-raising email featuring a retouched version of one of these new vitalist icons — the color altered to grayscale, and with added noise to suggest an older photograph. A historic image? There is no history anymore, only the perpetual present of content, which Mr. Trump understands even amid gunfire.

An earlier version of a picture caption with this article misstated the site of the assassination of President James Garfield. He was shot in Washington and later died in Long Branch, N.J.; he was not assassinated in Long Branch.

Our Coverage of the Trump Rally Shooting

The Investigation : F.B.I. officials told Congress that the 20-year-old gunman who tried to kill Donald Trump used his cellphone and other devices to search for images of Trump and President Biden .

Security Blind Spots : Even as investigators continue to examine what happened at the Trump rally, it is already clear that there were multiple missed opportunities to stop the gunman  before the situation turned deadly.

The Gunman : In interviews, former classmates of the suspect described him as intelligent but solitary , someone who tried to avoid teasing by fellow students.

Secret Service Director : Kimberly Cheatle returned in 2022 to lead the agency she had served for nearly 30 years. Now, the assassination attempt on Trump has thrown her tenure into uncertainty .

Fears of What’s Next : Among voters, there is growing anxiety that America’s political divide is nearly beyond repair, and the shooting only made things worse .

Gear Test: Shore2Sea Dry Bag

Shore2Sea

Looking for a top-quality, affordable and beautifully designed dry bag that will actually keep everything DRY? Here’s a tried and tested solution – Shore2Sea’s unique range of bright and sturdy dry bags…

  • Durable and Strong
  • Affordable (£22-£38)
  • Unique, bright design

About Shore2Sea

The founder, Clementina, set out on a mission in 2022 to produce eye-catching, fun to use, top-quality dry bags and, with her background in pattern design and textiles (and love for the sea) she has achieved just that. Clementina and her family use these dry bags for any and all marine activities – they’re tried and tested, made with a full understanding of the needs of sailors, paddle boarders, swimmers (and more), and inspired by the ocean.

The bag I tested had a capacity of 15 litres, affording me the luxury of taking everything I could possibly need on my salty, and often soaking, adventures. Shore2Sea’s range includes 5L, 15L and 20L dry bags , made from strong and durable PVC, and are available now for £22-£38 . They also offer a 28L eco tow float with double chambers, which also comes as a rucksack. Happily, these are made from recycled plastic bottles.

The Shore2Sea Designs

I’ve been using dry bags for years, but when I first came across Shore2Sea dry bag, at the RYA Dinghy and Watersports Show back in February, I was immediately drawn in by the beautifully bright designs and sturdy material. Their unique range of lobsters, wellies, puffins, and other seaside inspired patterns made it a difficult choice… thankfully the Shore2Sea founder, Clementina, was there to help. I headed home with a yellow lobster bag, making plans to get out on the water as soon as possible.

Shore2Sea dry bag

Not only could I now take whatever I wanted with me on my marine adventures, the design of the Shore2Sea dry bag, while being cheerful and sweet, was perfect for keeping safe out on the water. The yellow lobster design in particular, is recognisable and eye grabbing for when visibility is low, making it a kind of safety beacon, and unmissable if it ends up in the water, with or without you. Not to mention, it’s likely holding your water, snacks, keys, warm layers, and phone, safe and dry in case you get into trouble… or want to take a photo of a friendly seal.

Putting the Shore2Sea Dry Bag to the Test

I have been testing the 15L dry bag by Shore2Sea for the last 5 months, during which time it’s come with me dinghy sailing, out on the paddle board, and on many occasions walking down to the beach, on both sunny and (typically British) rainy days. It’s sat in the sun, fallen in the water (with me), and has been tethered to the mast of a Laser on particularly windy and capsizing days.

paddle boarding

After 5 months of various seaside and boaty activities, the material feels waxy-new, and the adjustable straps remain reassuringly comfortable. With these roll-top dry bags the seal at the top always seems the first to show signs of wear and tear, but my Shore2Sea bag still rolls and seals perfectly, with no suggestion of wearing in the creases of the roll. I’m impressed.

capacity

What Fits in My Shore2Sea Dry Bag

  • Towel / light dryrobe
  • Wallet & keys
  • Sailing / swimming shoes
  • Suncream
  • Warm jumper
  • Any emergency bits (epipen, waterproof plasters etc)

Shore2Sea have just released a new batch of designs… and you can now also grab a pair of padded rucksack straps (£6) for your longer adventures. For more info and to view their dry bag range visit the Shore2Sea website .

Most Democrats want Biden to drop out, but overall race is static, poll finds

More than half of Democrats say Biden should end his candidacy. Overall, 2 in 3 adults say the president should step aside, including more than 7 in 10 independents.

Most Democrats nationwide say that President Biden should end his reelection campaign based on his performance in the presidential debate two weeks ago, according to a Washington Post-ABC News-Ipsos poll .

The poll results contradict Biden’s claim that only party elites want him to step aside. He has said that positive interactions with supporters on the campaign trail have helped persuade him to stay in the race after a debate in which he trailed off and occasionally appeared confused. But the poll finds that 56 percent of Democrats say that he should end his candidacy, while 42 percent say he should continue to seek reelection. Overall, 2 in 3 adults say the president should step aside, including more than 7 in 10 independents.

The poll finds Biden and former president Donald Trump in a dead heat in the contest for the popular vote, with both candidates receiving 46 percent support among registered voters. Those numbers are nearly identical to the results of an ABC-Ipsos poll in April.

That finding is at odds with some other recent public polls. Across eight other post-debate national polls tracked by The Post, Trump leads by 3.5 percentage points on average, compared with a one-point Trump edge in those same polls before the debate. Biden led Trump by between nine and 11 points in averages of public polls at this point in the campaign four years ago. He ended up winning by 4.5 points.

The president and his campaign team have spent the week seeking to enlist support from important Democratic Party constituencies, including the Congressional Black Caucus, labor leaders and key progressive legislators, but with limited success. By early Wednesday evening, 13 Democrats in the House and Senate had called for Biden to drop out, though one, Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-N.Y.), has since softened his position.

Also on Wednesday, former House speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) urged Biden to make a decision about whether to drop out of the presidential race, a sign that she and other Democrats don’t believe that Biden’s statements insisting he will stay in have settled the issue.

The poll shows the degree to which Democrats across the country were alarmed by what they saw in the debate. Many Democrats fear that, if Biden continues his candidacy, Trump could have an easier path to victory and that Republicans could end up holding majorities in both the House and Senate, Sen. Michael Bennet (D-Colo.) said during an interview on CNN on Tuesday night.

The survey finds little change in Biden’s job approval, with 57 percent disapproving, identical to the percentage in an April ABC-Ipsos poll. Among Democrats, 75 percent approve of Biden’s performance while 22 percent disapprove, also little changed in the past few months. Americans’ views of Trump and his performance as president has also changed little since before the debate, with 43 percent approving and 52 percent disapproving.

Yet last month’s debate, which most Americans say they watched or followed news about, appears to have heightened concerns about Biden’s age and fitness for office. The share of Americans saying Biden is more mentally sharp than Trump dropped from 23 percent in April to 14 percent this month. The share saying Biden is in better physical health than Trump dropped from 20 percent to 13 percent.

Trump did not make large gains on these questions; instead, growing numbers say neither candidate has the sharpness or physical health needed for the presidency. Most Americans say both Biden and Trump are too old to serve another term as president, rising from 53 percent in April to 58 percent now. The share saying only Biden is too old is unchanged at 28 percent, along with the 2 percent who say only Trump is too old.

In total, 85 percent say Biden is too old while 60 percent say Trump is too old. In April, 81 percent said Biden was too old and 55 percent said Trump was too old.

Still, the new poll does not show movement in the voters’ intentions since the debate. In April, registered voters split 46 percent for Biden and 45 percent for Trump, with both now at 46 percent. Each candidate’s strength is among his party, with 92 percent of Democratic voters saying they’d vote for Biden in a two-way race and 93 percent of Republicans saying they’d support Trump. Among self-identified independents, the two are virtually tied, with Trump at 42 percent and Biden at 40 percent.

When third-party candidates are included, the margin between Biden and Trump does not shift significantly, with 42 percent supporting Biden and 43 percent supporting Trump. Another 9 percent of registered voters support Robert F. Kennedy Jr. , 2 percent for Cornel West and 2 percent for Jill Stein .

Democrats have not come to a consensus about who should replace Biden if he steps aside, though Vice President Harris has far more support than other potential candidates.

In response to an open-ended question, 29 percent of Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents volunteered Harris, while 7 percent mentioned California Gov. Gavin Newsom, 4 percent named Michelle Obama and 3 percent apiece named Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer. Half did not name a specific individual as an alternative to Biden.

In a separate question, 70 percent of Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents say they would be “satisfied” if Harris replaced Biden as the party’s presidential nominee. That rises to 85 percent among Black Democrats, but large majorities of Democrats across demographic groups also say they’d be satisfied with Harris.

Harris faces more headwinds from the broader electorate, with 53 percent of Americans overall saying they’d be dissatisfied with Harris replacing Biden as the Democratic nominee, including 58 percent of political independents. Two-thirds of Black Americans (67 percent) would be satisfied with Harris replacing Biden, compared with 51 percent of Hispanic Americans and 38 percent of Whites.

But in a separate ballot test, the poll finds Harris receiving 49 percent to Trump’s 47 percent among registered voters. But that two-point difference is not statistically significant. There are also not large differences between Harris’s coalition and Biden’s, with almost all demographic groups statistically even on both Biden and Harris. One exception are voters who “disapprove somewhat” of Biden’s performance: 60 percent support Harris against Trump, compared with 50 percent who support Biden.

The Post-ABC-Ipsos poll finds a sharp racial divide within Biden’s party over his candidacy, with 63 percent of Black Democrats saying Biden should continue while 59 percent of Hispanic Democrats and 64 percent of White Democrats say Biden should step aside based on his debate performance. Democrats older than 50 are roughly divided over whether Biden’s should continue, while 6 in 10 younger Democrats say he should step aside.

There is no ideological divide among Democrats about whether Biden should quit the race or remain as a candidate, with 55 percent of liberal Democrats wanting Biden to drop out along with 57 percent of moderate and conservative Democrats saying the same.

In a rousing campaign rally the day after the debate, Biden said “I might not walk as easily or talk as smoothly as I used to,” but “what I do know is how to tell the truth.” He criticized Trump for lying and making repeated false claims during the debate.

Perceptions of honesty stand out as a clear advantage for Biden against Trump, with 39 percent of Americans saying Biden is more honest and trustworthy than Trump. Twenty-two percent say Trump is more honest and trustworthy than Biden and 39 percent who say neither is honest.

The Post-ABC-Ipsos poll finds Biden holds smaller advantages over Trump on which candidate “represents your personal values” and whether he will “protect American democracy.”

Yet Americans split almost evenly on which candidate “understands the problems of people like you,” with 34 percent saying Biden is more empathetic, 32 percent saying Trump is and 34 percent saying neither is. Four years ago, a Post-ABC telephone poll found Biden with a 17 percentage-point advantage on a similar question.

The poll finds the CNN debate in Atlanta was a political debacle for Biden but not a triumph for Trump. Just 7 percent of Americans say Biden won the debate, while 46 percent say Trump won and 45 percent say neither prevailed or that it was a tie. Half of Americans say the debate made them think “less favorably” of Biden while less than one-quarter say this about Trump.

Half of all adults (50 percent) say that, based on his performance at the debate, Trump should step aside while 47 percent say he should remain in the race. But the big difference between Biden and Trump is that almost 9 in 10 Republicans continue to favor Trump continuing to run and a much larger majority of independents say Biden should get out than say the same about the former president.

The Washington Post-ABC News-Ipsos poll was conducted July 5-9 among 2,431 U.S. adults through the Ipsos KnowledgePanel , a survey panel recruited through random sampling of households across the country. Overall results have a margin of sampling error of plus or minus two percentage points; the error margin is 3.5 points among the sample of 825 self-identified Democrats and three points among the sample of 1,255 Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents.

Yacht Crew Packing List

Wondering what to pack in your suitcase when embarking on your yachting adventure to find a job?! ⁣ When I first left Australia in search of a job on yachts, I had zero winter clothes 🤦🏻‍♀️ thinking I would get a job on a boat and be chasing summers around the world.

…What I didn’t realise is yachts can be doing shipyards in the European winters, your “off” time will most likely not be in the summer and you pretty much live in air conditioning onboard. *Brrrrr

To help make it easier for you, I’ve made a GO-TO Yacht Crew Travel Packing list which you can download below. From the staples to the extras you may want to consider. From how many bikinis you actually wear, to seamless underwear (girls) and how to half your toiletries.

Other items to consider: • Do not pack a hard suitcase, space is SO limited onboard. You must buy a soft top suitcase. My go-to is from Eastpak and has lasted so many years through so many boats and travel adventures, it folds flat and is easily stored away • Noise cancelling headphones (In my eyes very necessary onboard… from drowning out anchor noises to noisy roommates) I have a pair of Bose Noise cancelling headphones which have lasted for nearly 6 years • ⁣Photos from home 🤍 • Hard copies of all your yachting certificates (must not forget these… also save a scanned version to a USB or send it to your email so can email them quickly to recruit agencies and captains)
