Shelling kills civilians in Ukraine’s northeast as fears grow of a second Russian takeover

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Russian forces struck a cafe in a key front-line area in northeastern Ukraine Saturday, killing two civilians and wounding a third, regional officials said.

The shelling near the city of Kupiansk came as U.K. officials said that Russia may try to retake the area, which was captured by Kyiv in a lightning counteroffensive last September after more than six months of Russian occupation. Fierce fighting there earlier this month prompted mandatory evacuations and fears of a second Russian takeover.

Russian shells on Saturday morning struck the cafe in Podoly, an eastern suburb of Kupiansk, regional Gov. Oleh Syniehubov said in a Telegram post. He added that rescue teams were working at the site.

U.K. military intelligence on Saturday assessed that Russia may “increase the intensity of its offensive efforts” around Kupiansk and nearby Lyman in an attempt to take pressure off its forces near Bakhmut and in the Zaporizhzhia region, where a Ukrainian counteroffensive has reportedly made gradual gains.

Igor Konashenkov, a spokesman for the Russian defense ministry, said in a regular briefing Saturday that Moscow’s forces had “improved their position along the front line” in the Kupiansk area and repelled five Ukrainian assaults over the previous day. He did not give further details regarding any troop movements.

Earlier this month, Ukrainian authorities ordered a mandatory evacuation of nearly 12,000 civilians from 37 towns and villages around Kupiansk, citing a concerted effort by Russian troops to punch through the front line.

After the Russian occupiers left Kupiansk last year, Ukrainian authorities said they found torture chambers and mass graves in the region.

Ukrainian officials have so far reported limited advances in Kyiv’s large-scale counteroffensive launched in early June, including in the southern Zaporizhzhia region and on the outskirts of Bakhmut, the eastern city that became the site of the war’s longest and bloodiest battle before falling to Moscow in May.

A Washington-based think tank said late Friday that Ukrainian forces were pushing forward in Zaporizhzhia after advancing into the village of Robotyne earlier this week. The Institute for the Study of War in its latest assessment cited pro-Kremlin military bloggers expressing concern over a lack of reinforcements and troop locations in the area, while the Ukrainian General Staff that same day claimed unspecified further successes south and southeast of Robotyne.

Also on Saturday, a new drone attack on Moscow forced an early morning temporary shutdown of all three major airports serving the city, Russian state media reported. Officials blamed Ukraine for what appeared to be the latest of near-daily strikes on the Russian capital and the surrounding region.

Kyiv has since early this year sought to take the 18-month-war into the heart of Russia, also saying recently that it was behind strikes on Russian military assets far behind the front lines.

Russia’s defense ministry and Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin said that a drone was shot down over the Istra district of the Moscow region, some 50 kilometers (30 miles) west of Red Square. Sobyanin said in a Telegram post that there were no immediate reports of any casualties or damage.

According to Russia’s state Tass agency, the Sheremetevo, Domodedovo and Vnukovo airports all suspended flights for over an hour early Saturday.

Russian Telegram channels on Saturday posted videos, some of them apparently from home security cameras, of what they claimed was Russian air defense downing the drone. One video shows a car parked outside what appears to be a suburban home, its alarm beginning to blare seconds after two loud blasts sound in the distance.

Russia’s defense ministry that same day blamed Ukraine for the attack. As of Saturday morning, Ukrainian authorities had not said whether Kyiv had any involvement.

Russia and Ukraine traded multiple drone attacks earlier this week, with Kyiv apparently targeting Moscow and the Kremlin’s forces launching another bombardment of Ukrainian grain storage depots in what have recently become signature tactics.

Also this week, Kyiv claimed it had destroyed a key Russian S-400 surface-to-air missile defense system in occupied Crimea. Ukrainian media also claimed that Ukrainian saboteurs coordinated by Kyiv’s military intelligence services carried out a pair of recent drone attacks that destroyed and damaged bomber aircraft at air bases deep inside Russia.

Later on Saturday, Russia’s defense ministry said in a separate statement that another drone was brought down as it approached the Russian city of Belgorod, some 45 kilometers (27 miles) from the Ukrainian border. It did not mention any casualties or damage.

Belgorod regional Gov. Vyacheslav Gladkov accused Ukrainian forces of shelling a border village using cluster munitions, wounding six civilians. Gladkov did not provide visual evidence for the use of the controversial and widely banned weapons, which contain dozens of small bomblets that scatter shrapnel over a wide area.

Kyiv last month began receiving cluster bombs from the U.S., but has pledged to use them only to dislodge groups of enemy soldiers. Ukrainian officials have regularly accused Moscow of firing cluster munitions at residential areas, while Russian regional authorities have reported Ukrainian cross-border attacks in which civilians were hurt.

Ukraine’s air force, meanwhile, reported early on Saturday that two Iranian-made “Shahed” drones fired by Russian troops were shot down during the night over the country’s northeast.

In Ukraine’s front-line Kherson region in the south, local Gov. Oleksandr Prokudin reported that an 83-year-old woman died in a hospital after suffering burn wounds as Russian forces overnight shelled the riverside village of Olhivka. Also on Saturday, the Kherson regional administration reported that Russian shelling damaged a hospital in the province’s namesake capital, blowing out doors and windows but causing no casualties.

A New York Times news report recently declared an “epidemic” of ghost gun usage, referring to untraceable firearms made with parts bought online or made by 3D printers.

In California, the problem is especially pronounced.

Between 25 to 50% of all the firearms recovered at crime scenes in Los Angeles, Oakland, San Diego and San Francisco in the past 18 months have been ghost guns, the Times reports.

But the Times also reports that ghost guns are “especially prevalent in coastal blue states with strict firearm laws.”

No kidding.

Gun laws only work on people who are willing to obey laws, which violent criminals by definition are not.

Similarly, the more you try to regulate away certain products, the more you push those products into the black market. While the Biden Administration has sought to curtail access to ghost guns, it is definitionally difficult to do so.

“While the rules would create a set of legal roadblocks, law enforcement officials say the extralegal pipeline for parts is sure to adapt and thrive,” the Times reports, noting there is already a “huge surfeit of supplies in circulation, enough to supply dealers who sell pre-assembled guns” for years to come.

The government can pass more laws, and perhaps they’ll reduce some incidents on the margins, but guns won’t be going away, certainly not with hundreds of millions in circulation,  the Second Amendment in place and now the wide availability of ghost guns.

The growing ease of producing one’s own weapons makes it even more important for government to focus less on merely making it less convenient for law-abiding gun owners to own guns and more on addressing the root causes of gun violence.

Dudley man who sold ghost guns to FBI informant sentenced to 7+ years in prison

WORCESTER – A Dudley man was sentenced to 92 months in prison and three years of supervised release for illegal gun sale charges.

The sentencing by the federal court in Worcester on Friday comes after Zachary Zella, 30, pleaded guilty in December to engaging in and conspiring to engage in the business of dealing and manufacturing firearms without a license in December, according to a statement by the office of U.S. Attorney for the District of Massachusetts Rachael S. Rollins.

The charges stem from allegations that Zella sold an FBI informant four 9mm ghost gun pistols – one of which contained a Gamo laser sight – and ammunition between March and May 2022.

Guns without a visible serial number, or homemade guns, are typically referred to as ghost guns by authorities.

In an affidavit seeking search warrants related to the case, FBI Task Force Officer Michael C. Alvarado outlined three separate gun purchases made by the informant.

During the first sale, Alvarado wrote that the man selling the gun emerged from the woods near the power lines wearing "a black ski mask and dark-colored trench coat," and "a 1911-style handgun." This firearm contained an extended magazine and red-dot sight, he wrote.

Zella, who communicated with the informant via text message, used code words, referring to guns as gaming consoles and ammunition as games or food, according to the affidavit.

Alvarado sought the search warrants days later.

Zella was arrested and charged in June 2022 alongside Mickie Simmons of Brookfield, also charged in the case.

Simmons, 31, was indicted in November on charges of conspiracy to deal firearms without a license, dealing firearms without a license and being a felon in possession of ammunition.

Authorities allege that during a later search of Simmons’ residence, at least five ghost guns, 15 ghost-gun kits, numerous rounds of ammunition, components of assault rifles, several other firearms and more than $25,000 in cash were seized.

Alvarado said both men have felony records that would preclude them from possessing or selling guns or ammunition.

“Ghost guns pose a real and imminent threat to public safety in our communities,” stated Rollins. “Each of these illegal ghost guns could have been used in a violent crime, shooting or murder. Each bullet represents a potential shooting or homicide victim. Keeping illegal firearms off our streets and out of the hands of prohibited individuals is critical to addressing and eliminating gun violence.

Syracuse, N.Y. — A 27-year-old man has been arrested after Syracuse police said they found he had a ghost gun, over 100 grams of fentanyl and roughly 628 doses of cocaine.

Police officers were on patrol in the 100 block of Congress Avenue on Saturday when they spotted a man riding a bike violating several traffic laws, according to a Syracuse police Facebook post on Friday.

Two officers attempted to stop the man - later identified as Delvin Gonzalez - but he refused and tried to run away, police said.

Officers chased Gonzalez onto a porch. Police said he reached toward his waistband.

An officer tased Gonzalez, who then pulled out a gun and dropped it, police said.

After arresting Gonzalez, officers found a 9 mm P80 ghost gun with a light and laser attachment that was loaded with eight rounds. A ghost gun is a gun that is untraceable and usually made privately from parts of other guns.

They also found $339, over 104 grams of fentanyl and over 62 grams of cocaine, police said.

Gonzalez was charged with three counts of criminal possession of a controlled substance, possession of a firearm, resisting arrest and menacing a police officer. The violations he was ticketed for were no headlight on a bicycle and riding a bicycle on the sidewalk.

He was taken to Upstate University Hospital due to a leg injury.

He’s being held in the Justice Center jail on no bail.

What an AR game should be

As soon as I opened the app I could already tell it looked promising. I started the game and it told me to point my phone at a surface to place the portal, and it was the quickest placement of and AR item that I’ve ever experienced. Other games take forever to notice where a surface is, but this game only took a few seconds, and I applaud the developers for that. Then I started the game. It was easy at first, and then the difficulty started ramping up. The game always had something to keep my on my toes, whether it be a swarm of ghosts to fight at once, or a boss that tries to sneak up behind you. The gun mechanics work great, and so far I haven’t had a single instance where a shot should have missed but didn’t. The enemies are unique throughout every wave that I’ve played so far, and every wave left a feeling of accomplishment. The game has never had any frame rate drops or glitches or anything like that, so that’s awesome. And as a bonus, the pixel-y graphics give the game an amazing arcade feel that not many other pixel art games feel like. This is a fantastic game and I’d recommend it to anyone!

I personally love this game and think it is one of the coolest AR games I have played. The game provides a fun unique gameplay experience that has you frantically blasting and turning around to destroy all of the ghosts and ghouls. The game itself is phenomenal but needs more content to keep it fresh. I would like you to add a arcade mode to see how many levels you can pass before loosing. You should also add a multiplayer game mode where players connect to a server and all have to cooperate to destroy all of the monsters. You should also add power ups to get a leg up on the boses. Finally I would like there to be a weapon shop to get different weapons. The only thing this game is lacking is a difficulty setting that would make the levels harder for experienced players to be challenged. But otherwise this game is phenomenal and keep up the great work!!!

I enjoy this game far from playing Clash Royale or Bowmasters. The style and game mechanics are minimalistic and simple to take in once launching the game. Although I’m on level 4 I can tell this game has some replay ability to come back over and over. I wish there was just different weapons instead of the dual machine guns where you can purchase just to kill the monsters. Don’t put any in app purchases, as well go for in game currency for every monster/boss you kill gain coins. At least something to work your way up to instead of one simple task. Most importantly this game is dope and I’m gonna continue playing this game whenever I need the need to slay some ghost even if I’m waiting in line on a amusement ride or even if I’m in the park. The world is your own levels.

Boris Tkhor, arsitek yang merancang konsep Moscow-City, telah merencanakan menara Rossiya menjadi yang tertinggi di Eropa. Di sana, jendelanya dilengkapi sistem hidraulis khusus. Jendela-jendela ini dibuka sebentar sambil diiringi musik klasik sehingga para tamu dapat mengambil foto Kota Moskow yang menakjubkan.

6. Kaca pecah di Menara Federasi

Tamu-tamu di restoran Sixty yang terletak di puncak Menara Zapad mungkin akan terkejut melihat kaca jendela yang retak. Kalau kita mempertimbangkan jenis kaca ini, rasanya ada sesuatu yang janggal. Kaca itu amat kokoh dan tidak dapat rusak setelah dipasang. Misalnya, selama eksperimen, orang-orang melemparkan segala macam barang berat ke jendela, tetapi kaca itu tidak pecah. Ternyata, unit-unit kaca Zapad yang pecah sudah rusak selama pengiriman . Karena masing-masing bentuknya melengkung supaya kelengkungan menara halus, membuat satu set panel jendela baru dan membawanya ke Rusia dianggap terlalu mahal . Apalagi, para investor mengalami kesulitan keuangan (lagi-lagi akibat krisis keuangan 2008) sehingga Menara Vostok bahkan sempat berdiri tak rampung selama beberapa tahun. Akhirnya, panel jendela yang retak tetap dipasang pada tempatnya.

7. Restoran tertinggi di Eropa

Birds, restoran lain di Moscow-City, terkenal karena lokasinya. Restoran ini dibuka pada akhir 2019 di lantai 84 menara selatan kompleks OKO. Para pengunjung restoran dapat menikmati pemandangan panorama yang menakjubkan pada ketinggian 336 meter. Pada 28 Januari, para ahli Kniga Recordov Rossii (Buku Rekor Rusia) menyatakan Birds sebagai restoran tertinggi di Eropa, sebuah langkah untuk mendaftarkan diri pada Rekor Dunia Guinness.

Ibu kota Rusia tampak sangat menawan jika dilihat dari atas. Inilah tempat-tempat paling keren untuk mengagumi Moskow dari ketinggian.
