Who's Who in the Five Nights at Freddy's Movie Cast?
Get to know Josh Hutcherson and the other stars of the new film, based on the horror video game series.

The jump-scare video game series Five Nights at Freddy’s is getting a feature film adaptation — which means that there needs to be actors who are brave enough to venture into Freddy Fazbear's Pizza, a horrifying, haunted Chuck E. Cheese-esque restaurant inhabited by killer animatronic mascots.
The new movie, directed by Emma Tammi , opens in theaters on October 27, and it will be streaming exclusively on Peacock that same day. It looks to be a worthy addition to spooky-season viewing , but before watching, here’s a quick guide to who’s who in the cast.
Get to Know the Cast of Five Nights at Freddy's
Josh hutcherson as mike schmidt.

Josh Hutcherson stars as Mike Schmidt, a down-on-his-luck security guard who takes a job at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza and finds himself trying to survive the wrath of Freddy Fazbear, Bonnie, Chica, and Foxy — four animatronics who come to life and try to kill anybody still inside after midnight.

Hutcherson is best known for his starring role in The Hunger Games films, where he played Peeta Mellark opposite Jennifer Lawrence. Some of Hutcehrson’s early roles included a motion-capture performance in 2004’s The Polar Express and a voice-acting role in the English dub of 2005’s Howl's Moving Castle. Some of his other pre- Hunger Games roles include RV (2006), Journey to the Center of the Earth (2008), and The Kids Are All Right (2010). He also appeared in the Red Dwan remake and in The Disaster Artist.
More recently, Hutcherson was the lead of the Hulu series Future Man , which ran for three seasons.
Elizabeth Lail as Vanessa

Elizabeth Lail stars opposite Hutcherson as a police officer who, in the games, shows up during one of Mike’s ill-fated night shifts at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza.
Lail is probably best known for her role of Guinevere Beck in the Lifetime-turned-Netflix series You . She has also had main roles in Dead of Summer and Ordinary Joe , as well as recurring roles in Once Upon a Time and Season 1 of the Gossip Girl reboot.
Matthew Lillard as Steve Raglan

The great Matthew Lillard plays Steve Raglan, a seemingly new character, although fans think he’s really playing the video games’ big bad, William Afton.
RELATED: Who Does Matthew Lillard Play In The Five Nights At Freddy’s Movie?
Lillard should be a very familiar face to any genre fan, as he’s known for playing one of the killers, Stu Macher, in the original 1996 Scream . Some of his other roles include Hackers (1995), She's All That (1999), Thirteen Ghosts (2001), Without a Paddle (2004), The Descendants (2011), and the TV shows Twin Peaks: The Return (2017) and NBC’s Good Girls . He also played Shaggy in the live-action Scooby-Doo films in the early 2000s, and voiced the character in animation ever since Casey Kasem retired from the role in 2009.
Mary Stuart Masterson as Aunt Jane
Mary Stuart Masterson plays Aunt Jane, Mike’s aunt from the games. Masterson made her first acting appearance in another movie about killer robots, of a sort, where she played her real-life father Peter Masterson’s daughter in 1975’s The Stepford Wives . Masterson is known for films like At Close Range (1986), Some Kind of Wonderful (1987), Chances Are (1989), I mmediate Family (1989), Fried Green Tomatoes (1991), and Benny & Joon (1993). She was nominated for a Tony Award for her role in the 2003 Broadway revival of Nine .
Piper Rubio as Abby

Abby Schmidt, who in the games is Mike’s younger sister, will be played by Piper Rubio, a child actress with a few credits at the start of her career, including a voice-acting role in an episode of the Apple TV+ kids show Pretzel and the Puppies and a role in Netflix’s Rob Lowe-led series, Unstable .
Kat Conner Sterling as Max
Kat Conner Sterling plays Max, a character who is seemingly new for the film. Her past credits include the 2021 Netflix film A Week Away and a few one-off roles in shows like 9-1-1 and The Resident.
Lucas Grant as Garrett
Lucas Grant plays Garrett, Mike’s younger brother who disappeared a decade before the events of the movie. Grant is a child actor with few credits to his name prior to this. He was in an episode of Pam & Tommy, 9-1-1: Lone Star, and The Patient.

The Cast of Scooby-Doo: The Movie: Where Are They Now?
From Sarah Michelle Gellar and Freddie Prinze Jr. to Isla Fisher, see what the cast of 'Scooby-Doo: The Movie' has been up to since the film's premiere in 2002
Sure, they were dysfunctional, a little competitive and certainly very eccentric, but Scooby-Doo and the Mystery Inc. gang knew how to hunt a ghost, ghoul or conniving criminal down effectively. The beloved cartoon series — which first hit the small screens in 1969 — reached new heights when in 2002, Warner Bros. debuted a film version of the crime-solving gang.
It comes as no surprise that the film was a hit at the box office, raking in $257 million worldwide after being filmed on an $84 million budget, per IMDb .
From Sarah Michelle Gellar and Freddie Prinze Jr. to Isla Fisher , see what the stars of Scooby-Doo: The Movie have been up to since the film dropped so many years ago.
Freddie Prinze Jr. as Fred Jones
Fresh off the success of I Know What You Did Last Summer and its sequel, I Still Know What You Did Last Summer , Freddie Prinze Jr. continued the spooky movie streak by taking on the role of Mystery Inc.'s wannabe main man, Fred Jones.
Though Scooby-Doo: The Movie found much success and became an instant classic, it was more than a film for Prinze Jr., who got to work with his then-fiancée Sarah Michelle Gellar.
The pair first met on the set of I Know What You Did Last Summer in 1997 and though they " really didn't dig each other ," they remained friends before their relationship turned romantic, and they wed in 2002.
The two share two kids together — daughter Charlotte Grace , whom they welcomed in 2009, and son Rocky James , who arrived in 2012.
Sarah Michelle Gellar as Daphne Blake

Before stepping into the stylish detective shoes of Daphne Blake, Sarah Michelle Gellar was no stranger to being in an ensemble cast.
The talented actress had famously starred as the titular character on The WB's Buffy the Vampire Slayer for seven seasons . She also snagged a role in Girl Interrupted alongside Angelina Jolie, Brittany Murphy and Winona Ryder and then, of course, she and Freddie Prinze Jr. had been in I Know What You Did Last Summer and I Still Know What You Did Last Summer with the likes of Jennifer Love Hewitt, Mekhi Phifer, Ryan Phillippe and Brandy.
Matthew Lillard as Shaggy Rogers
Warner Brothers. Courtesy Everett Collection; Stefanie Keenan/Getty
Determined to get the gang back together was the goofy, out-there best pal to Scooby, Shaggy Rogers, who was portrayed by Matthew Lillard .
Like his other co-stars, Lillard was no stranger to making Halloween movies prior to joining the Scooby-Doo cast. The actor famously played Stu Macher in Scream, opposite Neve Campbell and Skeet Ulrich.
He would go on to become a fixture in the Scooby-Doo franchise, voicing Shaggy in several cartoons, including Scooby-Doo! Mask of the Blue Falcon, Scooby-Doo! and the Spooky Scarecrow as well as Scooby-Doo! Haunted Holidays and many more.
Lillard and wife Heather Helm have three children.
Linda Cardellini as Velma Dinkley
Diyah Pera/Warner Bros/Kobal/Shutterstock; Mark Von Holden/Variety via Getty
Getting all the jinkies was Linda Cardellini , who played the brains of the operation, Velma Dinkley.
Though she went on to forge an illustrious career, which included roles in E.R., The Curse of La Llorana , Green Book, Mad Men, Dead to Me and plenty of others, many people will recognize Cardellini for her role as Chutney Windham, whose faulty perm story led Elle Woods to win her first court case in Legally Blonde.
Cardellini and her husband, Steven Rodriguez welcomed their daughter, Lilah-Rose , in February of 2012.
Isla Fisher as Mary Jane
Warner Brothers. Courtesy Everett Collection; Frazer Harrison/Getty
A young Isla Fisher sharpened her acting skills playing Shaggy's love interest, Mary Jane, in the movie.
The powerhouse actress has since launched an enormous career, starring in Definitely Maybe, Now You See Me, Wedding Crashers and the 2009 blockbuster hit, Confessions of a Shopaholic.
It seems Fisher has also found success in her personal life. The Australian native has been married to fellow actor Sacha Baron Cohen since 2010. The two share three kids : daughters Olivia, 16 and Elula, 13 and a son, Montgomery, 8.
Neil Fanning as Scooby
SGranitz/WireImage
Voicing the beloved Great Dane was Australian actor Neil Fanning. And while he lent his vocals to other films and series in the Scooby-Doo franchise, Fanning has kept a relatively low profile. According to IMDb , his last role was in 2016 when he played a roadhouse cop on the Australian TV series, Wanted.
Rowan Atkinson as Mondavarious
Warner Brothers/courtesy Everett Collection; Karwai Tang/WireImage
Rowan Atkinson made his name playing the lovable, albeit accident-prone Mr. Bean. However, he turned a leaf playing Mondavarious, the villain in Scooby-Doo: The Movie.
Since the 2002 film, the English actor has reprised his famous character in various movies, shorts and an animated series.
Miguel A. Núñez Jr. as Voodoo Maestro
Jon Kopaloff/WireImage; Erika Goldring/Getty
Miguel A. Núñez Jr. played eccentric Spooky Island resident, Voodoo Maestro.
Though he's had a steady career, Núñez Jr. is mostly known for playing the lead in Juwanna Mann, which also came out in 2002. He also has credits in Life, Tour of Duty, The Return of the Living Dead and more.

‘Ghosts’ Cast: What the Stars of the CBS Sitcom Look Like in Real Life

A haunting hoot! Ghosts is not the typical sitcom, but the transformations of the actors on the show are just part of the fun.
The CBS series, which premiered in October 2021, follows married couple Sam ( Rose McIver ) and Jay ( Utkarsh Ambudkar ) after they inherit a country estate. The pair plan to convert the historic home into a bed and breakfast, but their situation grows more complicated when Sam suffers a near-death experience in the house and suddenly acquires the ability to see the ghosts who live there .
The personalities of the spirits range from a Viking to a Prohibition-era singer to a flower child. Their knowledge (and costumes!) span centuries since they all died on the property and failed to move on to the afterlife over the years.
Joe Wiseman explained in October 2021 how he and fellow showrunner Joe Port crafted the ghost characters.
“The first thing we did was look at the macro and we thought of American archetypes and what kind of characters were from what period,” Wiseman told Entertainment Tonight at the time. “We sort of landed on the Northeast, where the Hudson Valley is and where the show is located, because we felt like that had American history baked into it.”
One character, in particular, dictated the background of the show’s entire ensemble, as the executive producers were set on including Thorfinn, played by Devan Chandler Long .
“One thing early on that we decided we wanted was a Viking,” Wiseman recalled. “And we just thought that would be a fun character to have. That sort of forced our hand a little bit in terms of location because we did a lot of research for all the characters. We wanted things to be historically accurate as much as possible because it’s just as easy to be accurate and funny as it is to make things up.”
Following “a lot of research about Vikings,” the creative team discovered that some sailed “down the coast from Canada and did exploratory missions inland,” Wiseman said. “So it rang true that one would be in the Hudson Valley.”

The key to the show’s charm was to build a diverse cast of undead characters. “The fact that these people who never would have met in real life from all different kinds of people, from all different kinds of places, but also from different eras who literally weren’t even alive at the same time,” Port told the outlet. “It’s a very interesting world where, even though they’re very different, because they’re forced together, they become friends and learn a lot from each other.”

Ghosts is a single-camera comedy about Samantha and Jay, a cheerful freelance journalist and up-and-coming chef from the city, respectively, who threw both caution and money to the wind when they decide to convert a huge rundown country estate they inherited into a bed & breakfast – only to find it was inhabited by the many spirits of deceased residents who now call it home.
The departed souls are a close-knit, eclectic group that includes a saucy Prohibition-era lounge singer (Pinnock); a pompous 18th-century militiaman (Jones); a ‘60s hippie fond of hallucinogens (Carrasco); an overly upbeat ‘80s scout troop leader (Moriarty); a cod-obsessed Viking explorer from 1009 (Devon Chandler Long); a slick ‘90s finance bro (Grodman); a sarcastic and witty native from the 16th-century (Zaragoza); and a society woman and wife of a 19th-century robber baron who is Samantha’s ancestor (isocky), to name a few.
The opening of the B&B is a source of intrigue, anxiety, and curiosity among the spirits, but they’ll gladly put up with the commotion as long as they can continue to interact with a living inhabitant – Samantha.

Ghosts Recap: The Ghost Trap 2000

Oh dear, sweet, poor Freddie; he knew not what he signed up for. By the end of “Ghost Hunter,” Jay and Sam’s assistant quits — for good, if he has any sense — and before the Arondekars can persuade him to stay, Freddie lists off everything he’s been put through in just a few short weeks working at the B&B. It is extensive and troubling and certainly makes you wonder why he stayed as long as he did. Know your worth, Freddie! My guy was fired due to a misconception that he was a murderer, rehired by way of burrito, dumped thanks to his meddling boss, and then his other boss bought his old car for ghost-related reasons that seem a touch psychotic to the layperson. Yet, despite all this , it is only once Freddie becomes convinced Woodstone is haunted that he decides he’s out of there. Freddie draws the line at ghosts.
Sam and Jay try to play dumb for a little while when Freddie first brings it up, but while laughing off strange humming (Alberta) or pens randomly rolling off tables (Trevor) is doable, they can’t ignore that security footage of computer keys moving by themselves. They let Freddie run with his plans to de-haunt the house since most of his ideas are silly, ineffective ones — the ghosts love sage, haven’t you heard? — but eventually they run into some trouble. Big Trouble. Ghosts possibly getting eviscerated from existence Trouble.
Freddie has special-ordered a Latvian ghost-hunting machine called the Ghost Trap 2000. When the ghosts notice a little sticker on it that says “two and under,” they assume it’s some toy that Freddie got tricked into buying. And yet … when they see that Freddie has set an Oreo on top as bait (Freddie might have a future in ghost hunting, because they all want to sniff it), no one wants to be the first. Pete chickens out, but the moment Thor’s “manhood” is called into question, he can’t help but touch the machine. The bad news is that the Ghost Trap 2000 is legit. Thor gets pulled inside, followed shortly by Flower, who immediately forgets what she just witnessed and touches the machine, too. The bad news turns to Terrible News when Sam inadvertently triggers a four-minute countdown to complete ghost evisceration while trying to turn the machine off. Now, that’s when the ghosts really lose it.
There are a few things going on here in the midst of all the chaos. First of all, after trying to trick Freddie into thinking he’s ridiculous for suggesting ghosts are real, Sam and Jay now need to go to him and ask for his help in figuring out how to turn the thing off. He willingly calls the ghost-trap company, but the whole situation does nothing to quell his feelings that his employers are uncomfortably odd. The man was always either going to have to find out about the ghosts or quit, and Freddie has made it clear he’s not a fan of ghosts. Keeping Freddie around would only further endanger our ghosts, so good-bye to you, sir!
More importantly, we get some good old-fashioned emotional development for several characters. When Jay learns that Sam didn’t ask him what he thought about the ghost trap in the first place, his nose is immediately out of joint. Sam explaining that ghost stuff is usually her own thing only makes him feel worse. He’s the guy standing there in the Atari T-shirt, after all! He loves this stuff and also has extensive knowledge of sci-fi pop culture. He might be helpful. He just wants to be a part of it all. Sam recognizes that her husband wants to be heard and also that he’s probably right — he might have a good perspective on a lot of these ghost problems. So when Jay posits that the whole “two and under” thing could mean that the trap can only hold the energy of two ghosts and that sending a third ghost in there could overwhelm the system, shutting it down and freeing Thor and Flower, Sam wants to go with that plan. The ghosts aren’t thrilled to be risking one more ghost’s, er, “life” “so that Jay feels heard,” but his passionate speech about how even though he doesn’t see or hear the ghosts, he still cares about them and would never want to hurt them is so lovely — it seals the deal. One more ghost needs to go in, and the clock is ticking.
The need for a volunteer willing to risk evisceration gives Pete a chance to redeem himself after chickening out earlier. Throughout the series, he’s been taking baby steps toward not always playing it safe. As he tells the group, he lived his life constantly worrying about something bad happening and that bad thing, by way of an arrow through the neck, still happened. So why not be brave? I mean, Pete has a much longer inspiring speech to give than that, but time is of the essence here; Pete goes into the machine.
Inside the trap this entire time, Thor and Flower have been contemplating the end of their existence. You’d think dying the first time would be the worst thing that could happen, but that was before we were introduced to the Ghost Trap 2000. Even with all of this machismo (Thor readily admits that he bases a lot of his “identity on being large”), Thor has grown much more comfortable with showing his vulnerability over the time we’ve known him. It’s why here, even though he was rejected the first time, Thor can tell Flower that if this is the end, he’s “happy to at least spend final moments with Flower.” It’s so unexpectedly swoony, and Flower’s into it, too. “I like when you say stuff like that,” she tells him, “more so than when you say stuff about dismembering Danish people.” This is the rom-com of my dreams, to be honest. Thor has put himself out there once again, and this time it pays off. When Pete arrives inside the machine, he finds Thor and Flower furiously making out.
Jay’s theory about overloading the machine winds up being correct. The trap overloads and short-circuits, freeing Thor, Flower, and Pete. Seconds later, Freddie arrives to inform them that they could just unplug and replug in the machine to set free any trapped ghosts — information that could’ve been very useful four minutes prior before everyone almost had a complete nervous breakdown. Regardless! Freddie’s hitting the road, and in the end, Jay feels like part of the group, Pete faced his fears and comes out a hero, and Flower feels inspired to do something scary herself: She wants to take Thor up on his offer for a one-on-one date; no third required. Nothing like a harrowing life-or-death-or-other-death situation to bring about some big changes at the Woodstone B&B.
Ghouls Just Want to Have Fun
• We say good-bye to Jessica in this episode, too — but not for Sas’s lack of trying. Freddie actually sells his haunted car at the beginning of the episode, and the ghosts beg Sam and Jay to buy it from the new owner. It’s not long before Sas realizes it’ll be awful for Jessica to have to miss out on the fun ghost stuff going on in the house and Jessica realizes she’ll feel terrible forcing Sas to come out there and sit with her all the time. Plus, she misses the open road (Sam and Jay already have their own car; this would be a “lawn car”). They decide their love is not meant to be, and then Jay has to convince the owner to take the car back. All-in-all, quite sad for ol’ Sas and extremely emasculating for ol’ Jay.
• Nichole Sakura was such a fun and game guest ghost, and I will dearly miss her perfect delivery of lines like “So it’s less good than a dog, my situation.”
• Of course Hetty has an opinion on the types of toys parents give their kids: “What’s wrong with a simple stuffed raven or a good old-fashioned lead rattle, am I right? Parents these days!”
• Isaac explains that the phrase “bite the bullet” came from his era since they “had to literally bite bullets during surgery because [they] lacked anesthesia.” Flower asks him how that worked out for all of them back then and Isaac’s response is, “Sort of depended on how good your barber was.” Now, that’s a good 18th-century-based joke right there.
• That cheeky, perfectly timed cut to the title card at the top of the episode was a hoot.
• I laughed so hard when the entire ghost-trap situation came down to Thor and Flower needed a third to break them free and poor Thor could only remark, “Why does it always come down to this?”
• “You want us to buy a lawn car? Just to sit on the lawn? Who are we, Tony Stark?”

New Frasier Reboot 2023 Cast, Characters & Actors

They’re callin’ again. Paramount+’s Frasier reboot/revival is set to hit streaming imminently, and this time, Dr. Crane has new faces and a new location surrounding him.
Frasier ’s original run in the '90s and early 2000s brought the title character from Boston back to his home city of Seattle, Washington, repositioning him into the orbit of his grouchy father Martin, his fastidious younger brother Niles, and a new cast of unique and memorable characters.
Now, Paramount+ produced a 10-episode revival season of Frasier that sees Dr. Crane come back to his old stomping grounds of Boston.
Many of the original players won’t be present (some will be special guests; David Hyde Pierce declined to return and John Mahoney sadly passed away in 2018), so the Frasier revival’s cast will be composed of newcomers.
Here’s everyone who will show up in Paramount+’s Frasier .
Every Main Actor & Character in Frasier Reboot
Kelsey grammer - dr. frasier crane.

The inimitable Kelsey Grammer stars as Dr. Frasier Crane, marking the first time Grammer will return to the role since Frasier ’s original 2004 series finale (not counting a 2008 ad for Dr. Pepper .)
The actor stated that the main narrative crux for the revival is one of reconnecting and reconciliation between Frasier and his son, Frederick. Other than that, as the show’s trailer clearly indicates, “Frasier’s back! …And he’s basically the same.”
Nicholas Lyndhurst - Alan Cornwall

Only Fools and Horses ’ Nicholas Lyndhurst plays Alan Cornwall, Frasier’s old Harvard chum from across the pond who always seems to have a drink in his hand.
The marketing paints a picture of a man who can cut Fras down to size with a razor-sharp barb, a role for which Niles was routinely on hand during the show’s original network run.
Jack Cutmore-Scott - Frederick “Freddy” Crane

Seen multiple times throughout the original Frasier (plus the tail end of Cheers as a toddler), Dr. Crane’s precocious, at-times rebellious (see: his goth phase in Season 11’s ”High Holidays”) young son Frederick has grown into a strapping Boston firefighter in his 30s for the revival, portrayed by Jack Cutmore-Scott.
Seemingly wanting little to do with his father, Freddy lives in an apartment with a woman named Eve. Things begin to change, though, when Frasier arrives on his doorstep, looking to mend old wounds.
Anders Keith - David Crane

David Crane, brought to life by Anders Keith, was actually seen as an infant in the original series’ series finale, “ Goodnight, Seattle. ” Although his parents, Niles and Daphne, won’t be seen in the new season, their legacy lives on through David.
Jess Salgueiro - Eve

Little is known about Jess Salgueiro’s Eve other than that the character serves as Freddy’s roommate. Frasier describes her as his son’s girlfriend in a promo for the series, but reports indicate this may not be the case.
Toks Olagundoye - Olivia

Olivia, as portrayed by Toks Olagundoye, works as the head of Harvard’s psychology department. Since Frasier is set to return to the world of academia, this time as a professor, Olivia will act as his boss.
Bebe Neuwirth - Dr. Lilith Sternin

Bebe Neuwirth returns for a guest spot in one episode as Frasier’s sometimes frosty ex-wife, Lilith. The two wed midway through Cheers but were divorced by the end of the show. Nonetheless, and often to Frasier’s chagrin, Lilith made several appearances throughout Frasier , popping up once or twice a season.
Although they can be adversarial, deep down, Frasier and Lilith truly care about each other and their son, Frederick.
Peri Gilpin - Roz Doyle

The one and only Roz Doyle returns, with Frasier original cast member Peri Gilpin reprising her role. Roz, as she was first depicted, was someone who always had a man in her life, sometimes several. She gave birth to a daughter, Alice, during the fifth season.
It’s unknown what brings Roz to Boston for her one-episode guest-starring role, but perhaps she just wants to spend some time with her old friend Fras.
Jimmy Dunn - Moose

Little is known regarding comedian Jimmy Dunn’s character Moose, but Dunn did actually grow up in Boston, which is where the show is set.
Kevin Daniels - Tiny

Kevin Daniels, who plays Tiny on the new Frasier , actually had a one-episode appearance on the old Frasier ’s tenth season as a surly barista.
Renee Pezzotta - Smokey

Actress and comedian Renee Pezzotta will play Smokey. Pezzotta can also be seen in a myriad of other popular series such as The Orville and How to Get Away With Murder .
John Bucy - Roger

John Bucy plays Roger, who is likely one of the students in the course that Frasier teaches. Bucy previously had a small role in DC’s Wonder Woman 1984 .
Parvesh Cheena

Parvesh Cheena has played characters in Shining Vale and The Mandalorian , lending his voice to a droid on the latter.
Cheyenne Perez - Saara

Cheyenne Perez, whose previous roles include appearances in And Just Like That… and 9-1-1 , will portray Saara.
The original Frasier is streaming now on Hulu and Amazon Prime Video .

‘Ghosts’ Season 2 Review: CBS Sitcom Illuminates Witty Spirit With Midseason Premiere
The winter premiere of ‘Ghosts’ sophomore season and its 2023 offerings is serving up more than just laughs.
After spooking up a series high of 7 million viewers with its two-part, holiday-themed episode this past December, Ghosts returns on CBS Thursday night for its midseason premiere, and the single-camera comedy continues to prove it’s the gift that keeps on giving. The bubbly, primetime darling has become a kaleidoscope of comedy across the network landscape thanks to its unique characters, sharp dialogue, and wholesome moments . Reinventing itself as a strong series outside its BBC One inspiration of the same name and diverging from its source material most naturally, the richly funny Joe Port and Joe Wiseman -created unicorn continues to demonstrate it’s one of the best sitcoms from the past decade. In celebration of its 2023 return, Collider got a chance to watch and review the first three episodes made available for the press, but don’t worry — no spoilers are ahead.
With writing that feels far stronger than some of its previous offerings this past season, which dealt with minor pacing issues that just didn’t quite feel like its usual compared to its 2021 debut, the next three episodes of 2023 are a welcomed return to its laugh-out-loud, comical spirit with much of that elevated through the directorial charm of Oscar-winning filmmaker Matthew A. Cherry , who directs the first two premiering this January. But while a lot of the comedic effort often rests on the shoulders of the Ghosts writers consistently maintaining their stamina for humorous storytelling and the absurdities their characters find themselves in, its front-facing magnetism relies on the playful ensemble led by Rose McIver and Utkarsh Ambudkar – and they do it ever so effortlessly alongside Brandon Scott Jones , Danielle Pinnock , Sheila Carrasco , Richie Moriarty , Román Zaragoza , Devan Chandler Long , Rebecca Wisocky, and Asher Grodman .

In Thursday’s all-new episode “The Perfect Assistant,” written by Lauren Bridges , fans will get to know one of Woodstone B&B’s newest residents Freddie ( Mike Lane ), whose dream to have his own cozy lodging establishment drives him to apply as assistant for Sam (McIver) and Jay Arondekar (Ambudkar). Of course, despite Freddie being an exemplary assistant for the couple and proving his worth to Jay through a mutual love for Keanu Reeves, he doesn’t come without his own kind of baggage. As Sam and the mansion’s ghosts soon learn his Toyota RAV4 does more than help him deliver aromatic foods in a side gig, the “land ship” is also home to the brunch-loving, mimosa-drinking Jessica ( Nichole Sakura ), a fun and bubbly spirit that has her eye on Sasappis (Zaragoza).
Elsewhere in the episode, Thorfinn (Long) tries to help his son, Bjorn ( Christian Jadah ), who lives two houses down at the Farnsbys and is being bullied by their 1950s housewife, Judy ( Lindsay Broad ). Naturally, Thorfinn with his tough guy ideals doesn’t think it to be as much of a problem as his son is making it out to be and shares some less-than-nice advice in tackling the issue. But when one of the other ghosts decides to step in with their own bullying advice while the big guy is away, things get a little heated when he finds out and feelings get hurt. Not to mention, we learn a lot more about one of the house ghosts and their past. Though the confrontation brings out a tender dialogue between the pair and one that will no doubt have audiences tearing up and at best, even relating, it’s in this twinkling storyline that Ghosts proves its heart is always in a good place with its medley of messages reiterating acceptance.
Since its premiere this past September, Ghosts has delivered a stellar lineup of new guest stars, but Sakura as Jessica is one of the best additions to the show so far. Brimming with personality and spunk, the actress, best known for her role on Superstore , brings an incredible amount of charisma to her character and one that fans are really going to love. Teased in reports earlier this winter , Sakura will be a recurring guest star this season with Lane, which means fans will see their respective characters fleshed out a bit more than characters like, Stephanie (“Attic Girl”). But while Jessica finds herself mingling with the ghosts across these next three episodes, Lane’s Freddie gets to work thanks to Sam and Jay putting their trust in him. In a performance that is just as lovable as Sakura’s, Lane as the bumbling yet endearing helper is a great fit for the series as he plays the nerdy personality riddled with anxiety down to a tee. His ability to fit in through a natural chemistry with McIver and Ambudkar speaks to the talent, but also to Ghosts ’ casting department ensuring every pick for the series brightens its writing and complements its effervescent talent.
With fans digging deep into another new episode next week with “The Family Business,” featuring Lane and Sakura, audiences will get a chance to see Sasappis strike up a romance with Jessica. While we don’t know where this leaves him and Shiki ( Crystle Lightning ) just yet, the sheer fact that he and Jessica have an affinity for aromatic meals like pizza and coffee feels like a match made in heaven (or whatever this is...). The addition of Jessica to Woodstone creates a fun dynamic for audiences in seeing another side of Sasappis that Zaragoza most effortlessly brings a renewed zeal to. Since Season 1, fans have seen a carefree spirit in the Lenape ghost, filled with sarcasm and eye rolls. But with Jessica in the picture now, audiences will see the young actor go all in for an enjoyable, shining performance that is quite rare to see in his on-screen counterpart and picks up beautifully from “The Tree” episode.
Meanwhile, in the episode, Sam is doing her best to meddle in Freddie’s relationship with his girlfriend Beth while wanting to know as much about him as possible. Again, we see her love for Hallmark movies and romance hard at work following the Ghosts Christmas special . But with going so far as to share relationship advice, much to Hetty’s (Wisocky) chagrin of getting too close to “the help,” things go exactly as they would when Sam and her fifth great aunt bump heads. With the official logline from Paramount narrowing into a power struggle between the two family members as Hetty attempts to discipline Sam , the issues that unfold between the two speak deeper to the layers audiences will see peeled back on Hetty.
Fans have been wanting to see more of the Woodstone matriarch’s backstory since the first season, and “The Family Business” will open their eyes to another side of her life and learn just why she’s so uptight most of the time. It is a luminous performance from Wisocky and McIver that just nails their on-screen dynamic so perfectly and explains what their characters each mean to each other in unspoken words. The tender moment that these two share will be one that leaves you in tears and wishing you could hug your mom. But at best, you can hug the TV since the show always feels like it’s hugging you back.
After “Alberta’s Podcast” and “The Christmas Spirit” from Ghosts Season 2, “The Family Business” is among the best so far. Featuring laugh-out-loud moments with hilarious one-liners that will undoubtedly be a favorite among fans and the polar opposite combos we love seeing mingle and share moments together, next week’s episode is a standout thanks to dazzling writing from John Timothy , the acute direction from Cherry and as always, the striking cast. Not to mention, audiences will see Woodstone turn up the dial on their childlike shenanigans, highlighting how Sam and Jay are genuine parents to this spirited bunch .
While talking about the third episode of 2023 would give away too much and spoil the fun, take our word on it that it’s another astoundingly funny addition to the catalog and a real standout. Diving deeper into the mythology of Woodstone’s ghosts and how they interact with objects, the episode is one that will leave fans in shock — and total awe. With Port and Wiseman cleverly injecting Freddie and his car ghost Jessica into the Woodstone B&B this season, it’s safe to say their addition to the series contributes to a larger, more internal arc for the remainder of Ghosts ’ sophomore season – one that will have fans really excited to see finally peeled back. With ideas first sprinkled across Season 1 , Freddie’s endearing charm officially sets things in motion for some of the ghosts thanks to his nerdy ways, and it will be an exciting chapter ahead. Or so we should hope. But it won’t be easy, that’s for sure. It might also be a little scary at first as it keeps fans at the edge of their seat come the start of February.
Through all its appeal and sparkle, Ghosts continues to set the bar for network sitcoms to think bigger in the realm of situational comedy thanks to its refreshing writing packed with entertaining one-liners, an energetic cast, and a strong, joyful sentiment that sits with you long after the episode’s over. Some episodes in the sophomore season might have missed the mark in its usual flavoring and felt a bit rushed, but the series remains a heartwarming and fun, easy-going sitcom that never preaches its messages and continues to be an instant joy gracing primetime — proving that if you’ve got it, haunt it!
Ghosts airs Thursdays at 8:30 p.m. EST on CBS and streams on Paramount+.

Synopsis [ ]
Sam and Jay 's assistant, Freddie , purchases ghost-hunting equipment when suspicious activity leads him to theorize the B&B is haunted. Also, Sasappis risks losing his relationship with Jessica when Freddie sells his car.
A Plot: Freddie , Samantha Arondekar and Jay Arondekar 's new assistant thinks that Woodstone Mansion is haunted. Amongst other things, he caught the keys of his laptop typing by themselves on camera. Sam and Jay pretend they don't believe in ghosts. Freddie orders some items to take care of the ghost problem. They include: sage, which the ghosts enjoy the smell of; a ghost detector, which doesn't appear to work; and the Ghost Trap 2000. He ordered it from a Latvian country which specializes in ghost hunting equipment. The ghosts assume it is a toy for children.
Freddie baits the trap with an Oreo cookie on top of it. The ghosts decide to touch the trap to prove it is fake. Trevor pushes a die off the table and Pete 's number comes up. When Pete chickens out he challenges Thor to touch the machine. When Thorfinn does he gets sucked into the ghost trap. Isaac retrieves Sam and tells her Thor got sucked into the trap. While they are deliberating on what to do, Flower forgets what's going on and touches the machine, getting sucked inside.
Sam and Jay beg Freddie to find out how to release Thor and Flower from the ghost trap. They tell Freddie to press the button on the side of the machine and hold for three seconds. Unfortunately this starts a 5 minute countdown to "evisceration." Freddie tries calling back but it is a twenty minute wait to talk to anyone. Inside the machine Thor and Flower share a tender moment. Jay suggests the machine says "2 and under" because that's the maximum ghost capacity of the machine. He theorizes one more ghost getting trapped inside the machine might overload it, freeing them all. Peter volunteers since his number had come up originally. When he gets pulled into the machine Thor and Flower are making out. But Jay's plan works and the machine overloads, expelling all three ghosts.
After all the excitement, Flower decides she is ready to go on a one-on-one date with Thor. Meanwhile, Freddie quits, listing all the issues he's had so far including the fact he thinks the mansion has ghosts.
B Plot: Freddie sold the RAV4 that Jessica , Sasappis ' girlfriend, was bound to. Sasappis asks Sam to buy back the RAV4 so he can hang out with his girlfriend still. Jay tracks down the guy who bought Freddie's old car, a man named Marco who has a band which opened for another band called "Pungent Stench." Freddie sold the car to him for $1,300; Sam buys the car back for $1,550. Sasappis and Jessica hang out in the car together and they realize her car life is going to be pretty boring parked in the driveway. After the main events of the episode, Sasappis returns to the car to relay the excitement to Jessica and they mutually decide that she's better on the road instead of stuck in the driveway. Jay sells the car back to Marco and Jessica leaves with it.
Sasappis : My relationship's on the line and Jay's pinching pennies.
