The Toyz scare zone is themed after a maniacal toymaker who “is using dark magic to bring evil toys to life, including a porcelain doll, teddy bear, nutcracker, and ballerina.” These toys aren’t friendly, and of course, they’re coming for you.

Universal Orlando Halloween Horror Nights 2023 houses ranked

Tarah Chieffi

Most theme parks are designed for laughs, thrills and family fun. When Halloween Horror Nights takes over Universal Orlando each fall, though, the organizers have an entirely different type of fun in mind — the type that will have you screaming rather than laughing and running away from attractions rather than toward them. That's because the attractions at this event are terrifying haunted houses ... 10 of them, to be exact.

I recently returned from my first visit to Halloween Horror Nights 2023 and had a chance to experience all 10 houses. To help you prepare for your visit, I've ranked the houses from my favorite to least favorite.

Rather than provide a scale of how scary each house is, I instead based my rankings on how excited I am to go through a house again (which I'll be doing in a few short weeks). The houses that topped my list were those that were well designed, told a great story and, of course, provided a decent dose of scares.

Even so, rankings are subjective. My list could be totally different from yours, and that is part of the fun of this event. The production value of every house and the overall transformation of the park is unparalleled in the theme park world. There are no bad houses, and there truly is something for everyone.

Read on to see how my rankings compare to yours ... if you dare.

Check out our highlights from Halloween Horror Nights 2022:

Halloween Horror Nights 2023 haunted house rankings

1. universal monsters: unmasked.

haunted horror nights 2023 houses

Universal essentially created the modern-day horror genre, bringing classic monsters like Dracula, Frankenstein and the Mummy to the big screen in the early to mid-1900s. With such a deep well of dastardly characters to choose from, Universal often features its classic monsters at Halloween Horror Nights.

This year's iteration features the Phantom of the Opera, the Hunchback of Notre Dame, the Invisible Man and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde facing off in Paris. All four characters are causing murderous mayhem above and below the streets of Paris in iconic settings like Paris' opera house and the Paris Catacombs.

There's just something about seeing these grotesque monsters juxtaposed against the beautiful City of Lights — both full of history and lore — that made this house feel almost like a love letter, albeit a very scary one that had me screaming around every turn.

There were some gory scenes and unique scares in this house, but it was also the type of house that you want to do again and again because the story, the set design and seeing classic horror characters were worth the scares.

2. Stranger Things 4

haunted horror nights 2023 houses

The latest season of "Stranger Things" was, in my opinion, the scariest and most unsettling yet. The main characters are now in high school and college, but these are far from your everyday teens. While they are grappling with bullying, relationships and finding their identities, they are also battling literal evil in the form of Vecna, Season Four's primary antagonist.

If you are a fan of the hit science fiction horror series, you will be blown away by how accurately this house recreates memorable scenes from the show. But it wasn't only the physical settings and characters that felt familiar; it was the emotions I felt while watching the show. Yes, there are plenty of scares — many in the form of Vecna himself — but there are also moments that brought me right back to the tears I cried when seeing them on screen for the first time.

This house had a good balance of scares, epic battles between good and evil, and fan service moments. If you aren't a fan of the show, it may land lower on your list, but if you are, you'll walk straight from this house to one of the merch stands to purchase a "Hellfire Club" T-shirt.

3. Bloodmoon: Dark Offerings

haunted horror nights 2023 houses

If I were ranking Halloween Horror Nights houses solely on how scary they were, Bloodmoon: Dark Offerings would have been all the way at the top of this list. I felt unsettled for a good 10 minutes after walking through this house, which I guess is the whole point.

The house is set in a Colonial-style village where most of the town's residents worship the moon. When a blood moon rises over their fall festival, they take it as a sign to kill any nonbelievers and sacrifice them to the blood moon. You are in the unfortunate position of being an unlucky visitor in town while they are gathering body parts for their "harvest."

There is not one moment of levity in this house; it feels truly evil to the point that I wondered if this moon-worshipping cult could be real. The scares in this house come just as much from the murderous villagers jumping out at you as they do from the deeply unsettling feeling that digs deeper into the pit of your stomach with each step.

In other words, when you combine corn stalks, candles, animal skins and a cornucopia of body parts, you get a terrifying haunted house that you won't be able to forget when you exit the house and return to the safety of a theme park.

4. The Darkest Deal

haunted horror nights 2023 houses

This was one of the houses I was most excited about leading up to the event. It is another of Universal's original houses, this one being a play on the trope of selling your soul for fame and fortune. Universal refers to the entity promising this fame and fortune as The Collector, but I think we all know who they are referring to here.

When you enter the house, you meet a down-and-out Mississippi blues musician named Pinestraw Spruce who, at his wit's end, strikes a deal with The Collector. As the musician's star rises, he gets closer and closer to fulfilling his contract and facing an eternity in an underworld even seedier than the clubs he was playing when he sealed his fate with The Collector.

I loved seeing Spruce up on stage singing as he devolved closer and closer to meeting his end. The musical moments added a bit of fun (and, for me, a few dance breaks) as we followed Spruce along his journey. If you don't do gore, you'll appreciate the lack of it in this house, though there are plenty of demons popping out at you to make up for it.

5. Dr. Oddfellow's Twisted Origins

haunted horror nights 2023 houses

In addition to pulling from its own films, along with pop culture movies and TV shows, Halloween Horror Nights has built its own extensive lore with original characters that have appeared in various haunted houses throughout the years. This year, Universal introduced an all-new icon: Dr. Oddfellow.

When you enter this house, you are entering a 1930s-era circus where Dr. Oddfellow has invited guests (that's us) into the big top for a more sinister, late-night show featuring acts that a daytime crowd may find ... displeasing. As it turns out, once you are inside, the "acts" are a series of outrageous murders and Dr. Oddfellow's true motivation is revealed. You can get Dr. Oddfellow's full backstory on the Discover Universal podcast , but he is essentially collecting souls to gain immortality, and you are next on his list.

You don't have to be an expert on Dr. Oddfellow's backstory to rate this house highly, but it does add a deeper level to the house that I appreciated. You'll even notice a few nods to HHN's most infamous icon, Jack the Clown, including a glimpse into his origin story (hence the plural "origins" in the name of the house).

Universal nailed the creepy carnival vibe, with more clowns than you can fit in a clown car, silly-yet-startling sound effects, beastly creatures and, yes, some quite gruesome deaths. I distinctly remember walking through a room with one of those carnival knife-throwing wheels, and the knife-throwing sounds were so realistic I thought I was in danger of being struck.

Dr. Oddfellow is an intriguing addition to HHN's lineup of icons that I expect we will see again in future years.

6. Yeti: Campground Kills

haunted horror nights 2023 houses

Some Halloween Horror Nights houses have a storyline that can be difficult to follow while you are getting the wits scared out of you. Yeti: Campground Kills is not one of those houses. The premise is simple — a 1950s campground has been overrun by yetis, and because it's a haunted house, these yetis have a tendency toward violence.

There are yetis waiting around every twist and turn, but those aren't the only scares in this house. The residents of the campground are "dying" to get out and sometimes quite loudly. There are also some gags that elicited a laugh and a scream from me simultaneously, something I didn't know was possible until now.

As you can imagine, being mauled by yetis is quite gory, and you can expect a lot of blood and guts from this house. But the yetis are pretty cool to look at, even if they are terrorizing innocent campers.

7. Dueling Dragons: Choose Thy Fate

haunted horror nights 2023 houses

If you visited Universal Orlando's Islands of Adventure theme park between 1999 and 2010, you probably remember a roller coaster called Dueling Dragons. Riding on this dragon-themed dueling coaster, you could choose between one of two tracks — blue for Blizzrock, the ice dragon, or red for Pyrock, the fire dragon.

Dueling Dragons: Choose Thy Fate follows a similar storyline to the ride. Blizzrock and Pyrock are dark wizards who were turned into dragons after trying to steal Merlyn's spell book. The two dragons are locked in a battle of fire and ice ... and you are caught in their crosshairs.

The house is visually stunning, with a massive castle as the backdrop, spellbinding fire and ice effects, and chilling depictions of Blizzrock and Pyrock. This house has almost no gore, which is a nice change of pace if you are doing all 10 houses in one night. While beautiful, it also wasn't very scary, which pushed it lower on my list.

Near the end of the house, you really do get to "choose thy fate" and decide whether you want to follow Blizzrock or Pyrock into battle with Merlyn. Will Merlyn prevail, or will he be defeated by the evil warlocks? The choice is yours.

8. The Last of Us

haunted horror nights 2023 houses

Since its release in 2013, "The Last of Us" video game has been critically acclaimed for its in-depth, emotional storytelling and outstanding game-playing experience. The game now has a sequel and inspired a hit TV series on HBO.

The house is based on the first installment of the video game, following main characters Joel and Ellie as they navigate a post-apocalyptic world overrun by "the infected," humans who have been infected with the fungus-based Cordyceps infection. As you step into their world, you, too, are being stalked by the infected in all their forms — from runners to clickers to stalkers.

I haven't played the game, but I recently watched the series and was blown away by how accurately Universal recreated the infected. They looked even more grotesque and sounded even more disturbing than they did in the show, and they were certainly scary when they came lunging toward you. That being said, there wasn't much about this house that excited me other than seeing the infected live(ish) and in person.

I did go through this house with two friends who are super fans of the game, and it was higher up on both of their lists, likely due to the deeper connection they made with the characters and story by being so fully immersed in the game.

9. The Exorcist: Believer

haunted horror nights 2023 houses

The Exorcist: Believer house is based on the newest film from Blumhouse, the same production company behind hit horror films like "Us," "The Black Phone" and "Get Out." The story is a continuation of the original 1973 "Exorcist" film, following two young girls who went missing and returned with a new friend in tow (and by "friend," I mean a demonic entity).

I had low expectations for this house because the movie doesn't release until Oct. 6, 2023. Part of the fun of haunted houses based on films and TV shows is revisiting familiar characters and settings. With no opportunity to see the film and familiarize myself with the story beforehand, I had my doubts about how much I would enjoy this one. It turns out I was right.

The two girls — and the evil within them — were terrifying, and it's never a good day when you bear witness to an exorcism. With no context, however, I felt like I spent most of my time in the house trying to understand the storyline. I will give this house this year's award for "worst smell," which, rather than describing, I will keep a mystery for you to solve after you visit.

10. Chucky: Ultimate Kill Count

haunted horror nights 2023 houses

Like many millennials, I was far too young to be watching horror movies the first time I was exposed to "Child's Play" (by my after-school babysitter, no less). The serial killer doll has since spawned many sequels and a TV series. Chucky: Ultimate Kill Count celebrates all of Chucky's many, many kills and was designed with an intriguing meta angle.

The first half of the house is meant to be a typical haunted house, but in the second half, the "real" Chucky is disappointed that nobody actually dies and decides to kill everyone who comes through the haunted house.

I was excited by the idea of this house, but the whole thing was so chaotic it was impossible to keep up with the storyline. I will give this house major points for gore and the sheer body count, but with so many things happening at once — including scenes from the Chucky series playing on TV screens — I was so overstimulated that I couldn't even process being scared.

Bottom line

Sound like a scary good time? It really is. For every scream, there are a dozen more laughs shared with the friends who survived the houses. And, luckily, there are a lot of other things to do during Halloween Horror Nights if you need a break from screaming your head off.

haunted horror nights 2023 houses

There are five outdoor scare zones that aren't quite as scary as the houses, delicious food themed to the haunted houses and a monster-themed night club called the Dead Coconut Club (located outside the park gates at Universal's CityWalk). Plus, some of the park's most popular rides stay open during the event.

Universal Orlando’s 2023 Halloween Horror Nights Houses, Ranked

The 32nd year of Universal Orlando's Halloween Horror Nights has ten houses of terror, incredible properties, and even yetis.

The Big Picture

  • Universal Orlando's Halloween Horror Nights celebrates its 32nd year with a record-breaking 48 nights of terror, featuring 10 houses and five scare zones.
  • The event pays homage to Universal's past and explores popular horror properties like Stranger Things and The Last of Us, offering a diverse range of frights for all guests.
  • Standout houses include The Exorcist: Believer, which combines storytelling and classic scares, and The Last of Us, a remarkable recreation of the game with incredible attention to detail.

This year, Universal Orlando will be celebrating its 32nd year of Halloween Horror Nights, which will run for a record-breaking 48 select nights through November 4. HHN has ten houses this year to explore, from original properties full of references to HHN's past to beloved properties like Stranger Things and The Last of Us . If that's not enough, this year also includes five scare zones, live shows, themed food and beverages, an overarching story that ties everything together, Death Eaters, and even David S. Pumpkins.

Universal has become the gold standard for Halloween-themed events in the theme park world, and after a third of a century of celebrations, Universal Orlando is once again proving why Halloween Horror Nights is an event worth going to. With ten different houses to check out this year, Halloween Horror Nights delves into the past of Universal itself, previous Horror Nights and the lore within, and explores some of the best existing horror properties today.

With so many scares and houses to dive into, let's rank this year's 10 houses at Universal Orlando's Halloween Horror Nights.

10. Dueling Dragons: Choose Thy Fate

Dueling Dragons (later known as Dragon Challenge), was a dueling two-track roller coaster. It was an opening-day ride at Islands of Adventure and ran from 1999-2017. The coaster—which was eventually replaced by Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure—had riders choosing between two different tracks, in what at the time was the only fully inverted dueling coaster in the world.

Universal keeps the spirit of this coaster alive for Dueling Dragons: Choose They Fate, in which visitors are stuck in a battle between two warlocks—one representing fire, the other, ice—who have been turned into dragons. Dueling Dragons has a lot going for it: massive dragons loom overhead, and the various fire and ice monsters that jump out at you have some of the most spectacular costume and makeup designs at this year’s HHN. However, the promise of different endings is a bit disappointing, as there’s not quite enough to differentiate the two paths enough to make visitors want to go through this multiple times. But the concept is a fascinating idea that we will hopefully see more of in the future, and fingers crossed Universal continues to keep their old rides alive in this matter.

9. The Darkest Deal

We’ve all heard the stories of musicians selling their souls for success, but The Darkest Deal does a fantastic job of bringing this to life in haunted house fashion. Guests follow blues musician Pinestraw Spruce, who trades his soul to The Collector for fame, and naturally, we get caught up in the redistribution of souls as well.

Throughout the maze, we see a series of performances by Pinestraw Spruce, from the beginning of his deal to the point where The Collector is pulling the strings. The Darkest Deal excels at telling a narrative story amongst the scares, and puts us in the shoes of Pinestraw Spruce, leading to a conclusion that sends us straight to hell. The blues-age musicians might not be the scariest monsters, but the evolution of Spruce and The Collector’s story is a fascinating way to tell this story.

8. Dr. Oddfellow’s Twisted Origins

This year’s HHN focuses on the character of Dr. Oddfellow, as his story weaves through the various scare zones and original houses. But Oddfellow’s presence is most apparent in Dr. Oddfellow’s Twisted Origins, where—as the name implies—we learn the beginnings of this evil ringmaster.

While Dr. Oddfellow’s Twisted Origins focuses on the icon’s horrifying circus, this house makes a tried-and-true haunted house concept feel fresh again. Twisted Origins often relies on bursts of surprising air, and frequent misdirection, making the guest think the scare is coming from one direction, then blindsiding them when they’re least expecting it, in a way that is quite effective. Considering how large Dr. Oddfellow’s grasp hangs over Halloween Horror Nights, Dr. Oddfellow’s Twisted Origins feels like an essential starting place for the haunts of HHN.

7. Universal Monsters: Unmasked

Of course, Halloween Horror Nights has to bring out the Universal Monsters, and Universal Monsters: Unmasked contains a curious collection of creatures, including The Invisible Man , The Phantom of the Opera, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Monster Unmasked goes into the Paris Catacombs, with sets that are remarkable, and with so many monsters represented here, this understandably feels like one of the longer mazes at HHN.

Unmasked does an excellent job of updating these monsters (some of whose Universal films were almost a century ago) into a more horrific scenario. One monster twists the spine out of a still-alive victim’s back, while Phantom of the Opera has been slicing the faces off people to make a new mask—and pinning some of these scraps of flesh onto the wall. While the lineup of monsters might not seem quite as threatening as maybe a Wolf Man or Dracula might, Universal Monsters: Unmasked smartly manages to pay homage to their legendary characters while bringing them into the modern day in a way that is quite unsettling.

6. Bloodmoon: Dark Offerings

While it might not have as strong of a narrative as some of the other original HHN houses, Bloodmoon: Dark Offerings makes up for it with some disturbing imagery and unnerving rooms. Focused on a colonial cult that murders those who don’t worship the Bloodmoon, right from the beginning, Dark Offerings is full of sacrifices and rituals that will make you want to convert to their beliefs, lest you become a human cornucopia.

With the constant chanting and praising, the red tint to every room, and the creepy worshippers, Dark Offerings is uncomfortable right from the get-go. Near the end, visitors have to walk through a chapel of sorts, and the churchgoers—who may or may not be real—makes for a horrific climax to this house. Bloodmoon: Dark Offerings has less of a direct story to it than other houses, but who needs a story when the house is this chilling?

5. YETI: Campground Kills

A sequel to YETI: Terror of the Yukon from a few years ago, YETI: Campground Kills brings a family of yeti to terrorize a ground of campers in the 1950s. This is another Universal original house that is impressive in its scale, taking guests indoors and outdoors, as we see campers torn apart by the yeti family, leaving blood, limbs, and marshmallows in their wake.

The yeti costumes are undeniably stunning, and both monsters and scared campers get surprisingly close to visitors. While this certainly isn’t one of the more terrifying houses, it’s the vibe of YETI: Campground Kills that puts it so high on this list. Campground Kills—for lack of a better term— is campy; so over-the-top and silly in its concept that it’s hard not to laugh and scream in equal measure.

4. Chucky: Ultimate Kill Count

Of all this year’s HHN houses, Chucky: Ultimate Kill Count has the most brilliant concept. Universal was working on their own Chucky house, and when the real Chucky found out that they weren’t killing actual visitors, he decided to take over, possess the dolls in the attraction, and rectify this murder-less house.

The structure of Ultimate Kill Count itself is a hilarious idea, as it begins as the mediocre Universal house, complete with a fake ending before an actor dressed like Chucky starts yelling at guests that the real Chucky is actually here and killing people. Part of the fun of Ultimate Kill Count is seeing scared actors dying in horrible ways, all from wounds inflicted by a Chucky doll. For a brand that often falls into meta humor, Chucky: Ultimate Kill Count finds the perfect way to keep this spirit alive in this house.

3. Stranger Things 4

This year marks the third time Universal has done a Stranger Things house, and Stranger Things 4 proves that they’ve absolutely nailed how to fit an entire season’s arc into one house. Stranger Things 4 covers all the major points of the latest season, beginning with Eddie Munson trying to wake up a Vecna-captured Chrissy, to the battles between Henry Creel and Eleven, deep into the Upside Down.

Universal has done an exceptional job bringing this season to life, complete with “Running Up That Hill” needle drops, hideous Demogorgons, and some of the best acting in any house. Stranger Things 4 is recreating some of the most dramatic and iconic moments of Season 4, and the performers playing the multiple Eddies, Elevens, and others do these scenes justice—often putting the guest right in between memorable encounters. For those who love Stranger Things , this year’s house is worth doing twice, just to capture all the fantastic details that make this come to life.

2. The Last of Us

Probably this year’s most hyped house is The Last of Us, which is surprisingly based on the game and not the recent hit HBO show. The Last of Us takes visitors through the expansive Pittsburgh section of the first game, from Joel and Ellie crashing in a gas station after being attacked by humans, through the sewers, and finally through the suburbs. This is a massive section of the game to recreate, but Universal—working alongside Naughty Dog—has managed to make this come to life with perfection.

As someone who adores The Last of Us , this house is a remarkable location to explore. The care and consideration that has gone into the details here are nothing short of incredible, as eagle-eyed guests can find secret passages Ellie has crawled through, Joel’s backpack, several workstations for upgrading weapons, and even a fully-written out Ish letter for fans of the game and other brilliant additions to the sewer section. The inclusion of actors playing Joel and Ellie, and new dialogue recorded by Troy Baker and Ashley Johnson makes the guest truly feel like the third person in Joel and Ellie’s journey. The Last of Us might not be as scary as the other houses, but for fans of the game or show, this is an unbelievable experience.

1. The Exorcist: Believer

While all the houses at this year’s Halloween Horror Nights are phenomenal in their own ways, The Exorcist: Believer is this year’s best house by combining the storytelling that Universal is so great at with these houses, and the classic scares you’d expect from a haunted house. This melding feels like everything Universal does right at Halloween Horror Nights—all for a film that hasn’t even come out yet.

Universal bills The Exorcist: Believer as a living trailer for the upcoming movie, where two 12-year-old girls are taken over by sinister spirits. Much of what makes The Exorcist: Believer such an effective house is the tricks you’d expect from a haunted house. The constant aural attack of screams, begging demonic voices, and the subtle use of Mike Oldfield ’s “Tubular Bells” make this a disconcerting walkthrough from the first moments you walk in. The Exorcist: Believer also feels claustrophobic in a way that other HHN houses don’t, as you walk too close to the demonic girls, often walking right next to them in haunting scenes from the upcoming movie. But Believer also knows how to use stillness to make the guest uneasy. Some of the most disconcerting rooms are where nothing is even happening, like when you walk through an oddly quiet bazaar, or see the iconic Exorcist stairs and just wait for something to come.

All 10 of Universal’s Halloween Horror Nights houses are worth checking out, but The Exorcist: Believer is a testament to everything Universal does so well at this event, from great theming, big scares, and the ability to tell an entire narrative through a haunted house.

Scaredy cats stay home! Forget Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party and Boo to You; today, we’re talking about Disney’s freaky cousin down I-4! Halloween Horror Nights 32 is officially in full swing at Universal Orlando, and the fog is continuing to roll in as guests line up for house after house full of terror and good times. The annual haunted celebration highlights the darker side of Halloween, featuring real scares and menacing entertainment in the form of scare zones and haunted houses, many of which are based on extremely popular horror franchises like Chucky ,  Stranger Things , and  The Last of Us .

Although we’ve already provided our readers with an accurate breakdown of each house in the 2023 edition of Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Orlando , we understand that if you’re only visiting once, you may not be able to get to each one without that terrifyingly expensive express pass. So, in an effort to help you have a murderously good time, we’re ranking the best and worst houses of the 2023 HHN season so you know where to run to first!

10: Dueling Dragons: Choose Thy Fate

Remember Universal Orlando before the  Wizarding World of Harry Potter ? There was one popular attraction that was set in the back of Islands of Adventure, where Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure now stands. Yes, we’re talking about Dueling Dragons, the hanging coaster that saw you choose between two dragons, Fire and Ice, and face off in dueling rail systems. Although the popular roller coaster is long gone, Universal paid homage to the fan-favorite this year, incorporating the theming into one of their HHN houses. Dueling Dragons: Choose Thy Fate is a fun addition to Halloween Horror Nights, with immaculately decorated rooms and the choice to choose Fire or Ice; it is lacking heavily in the scare department, earning it last honors on this list.

9: Dr. Oddfellow’s Twisted Offerings

Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Orlando always has a sinister mascot, and this year’s is Dr. Oddfellow. The main scareactor of HHN has had years of lore leading up to his debut at Halloween Horror Nights , and his twisted carnival-style house is definitely a fan-pleaser. However, despite it being amazing to look at, it too lacks in the scare department. Although it furthers the story and lore of Dr. Oddfellow, it’s your typical clowns and murderous carnival-based haunted house. However, a caveat if you’ll allow, Dr. Oddfellow does look quite menacing and creepy. His overall presence is concerning and foreboding, keeping Dr. Oddfellowe’s Twisted Offerings from falling into last place on this list.

8: Bloodmoon: Dark Offerings

Nothing goes better with Halloween than fall festivals and blood moons, and that’s what you’re going to get with this 2023 edition of Halloween Horror Nights. Bloodmoon: Dark Offerings is exactly what it sounds like: demonic worship gone bad. Set in a Colonial-era village where a cult is currently worshipping the blood moon, things go sideways when guests find themselves right in the middle of a real horror scene. Complete with a trip to the pub and a murder scene in a bedroom, Bloodmoon: Dark Offerings is indeed-well-dark. It does offer a few scares here and there, but the overall theming and plot are just unsettling. Although fans seem to be warming up to the haunted house, it still sits at number eight on our list.

7: The Darkest Deal

We may be a little biased here, so let’s get that out of the way, but as a house not based on a popular property, The Darkest Deal was impressive. Loosely focused on the tale of real-life musician Robert Johnson , this house explores a deal with the devil made by the blues musician in the delta of Mississippi. Ultimately, the real-life Robert Johnson would meet and early death at the age of 27 due to poisoning, but the house does a fantastic job of displaying the deal he reportedly made with Satan himself, giving the musician the ability to play the blues as no one else had ever heard. Of course, there’s always a price to pay, and guests to The Darkest Deal will find themselves in hell alongside Johnson after Lucifer comes collecting.

6: Universal Monsters: Unmasked

The fan-favorite monsters of Universal are back this year, featuring  Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde ,  The Invisible Man ,  The Hunchback of Notre Dame , and  The Phantom of the Opera . The twisted take on Universal Monsters: Unmasked finds guests braving the haunted house face-to-face with some of the goriest villains in cinema. Making your way through the catacombs of Paris, guests are met with awesome sets and scareactors who really went above and beyond during our visit to the haunted house. The combination of superb set design, familiar monsters, and a fantastic story, starting off in the rain above the catacombs, is perfection. The only reason Universal Monsters: Unmasked is not higher on the list is because the opening scene is so well done; the others fall short.

5: The Exorcist: Believer

This was probably the scariest house we visited during Halloween Horror Nights. It’s a strong contender for “house of the year.” Telling the story of two young girls who become possessed after they go missing in the woods, the creeps and scares are definitely waiting for you in this house. Featuring amazing set designs combined with NPC-like scareactors, this house is one of the few that left us uneasy as we exited. Although the story is similar in nature to what fans of the original Exorcist film remember, it is a completely different take but highlights many of the same features that frightened viewers so many years ago. Although scary and very well done, The Exorcist: Believer doesn’t crack our top five, not because it’s bad but because there are just better haunted houses at HHN this year.

4: YETI: Campground Kills

This isn’t your Expedition Everest Yeti we’re talking about today. Instead, YETI: Campground Kills is a trek through the woods while trying to escape a savage, bloodthirsty beast who wants to do more than accidentally show up in your vacation photos. This haunted house featured some of the best sets out of all of the 2023 HHN offerings. As well, the massive size of the Yeti featured within the haunted house is scary enough. Speaking of scares, if you’re looking for jump scares, this is the house for you! Although some may place it lower on their list, we felt like the fact that there’s so much lore out there regarding Bigfoot and the possibility of its existence just added that to the overall feel of the house. YETI: Campground Kills continues on a long run of Yeti-themed houses for HHN, and fans love this year’s edition.

3: Chucky: Ultimate Kill Count

Who doesn’t love insane, murdering dolls who are possessed by serial killers? You don’t? Well, then maybe skip Chucky: Ultimate Kill Count this year. Based on the highly popular slasher/ horror franchise featuring everyone’s favorite “Good Guy Doll,” Chucky makes his HHN debut in bloody disgusting fashion this year. Another early contender for “house of the year,” Chucky: Ultimate Kill Count, explores all of the ways Chucky has “dispatched” his victims. Although many don’t find Chucky to be scary at all, you’ll have a dreadfully good time checking out his haunted house no matter what. The designs are amazing, featuring many iconic scenes from his movies and television show. Horror fans will appreciate the work that went into bringing the animatronic Chucky to life right in front of their eyes if they can get out alive.

2: The Last of Us: Part 1

Just missing the top spot for best house at HHN 2023, The Last of Us: Part 1 is a zombie apocalypse dream come true. Based heavily on the first video game (not the series), the scenery and soundbites in this Halloween Horror Nights addition are perfect. There are plenty of scares to be had, and the amazing sights and sounds of clickers and infected alike cause chaos around every corner. Scenes are meticulously designed to replicate famous areas from the original game, all accompanied by audio straight from the franchise. It’s amazing; there’s simply no other word for it. Although the wait time is very long for this one, it’s worth every second you’ll stand in line once you find Joel and Ellie battling their way to meet The Fireflies in an attempt to save the remaining humans left on earth from ultimate extinction.

1: Stranger Things Season 4

This probably comes as no surprise to those who’ve already visited Universal Orlando for HHN 32.  Stranger Things , the popular Netflix series, features a group of kids from Hawkins, Indiana, who find themselves in the middle of the Upside Down and have returned to Halloween Horror Nights. Vecna, Eleven, Mike, Lucas, Dustin, and Max have brought the extremely popular season 4 walkthrough to Orlando, and it’s a sight to behold. The sets are perfect, the casting is perfect, the scene choices are perfect, trust us- it’s just perfect. There are jump scares, epic scenes featuring Metallica, and an easy-to-follow story as you’re transported alongside the courageous teens on their latest venture into a world of monsters. The house is, without a doubt, the prime experience at Halloween Horror Nights, demanding a lofty budget to build, and it shows. Much like The Last of Us , this house is in high demand, with wait times equaling a couple of hours on busy nights, but it is a must-do, even if you don’t know  Stranger Things  that well.

popcorn bucket NEW Universal Halloween Horror Nights Frequent Fear Pass

So, there you have it! Of course our list isn’t final and each house may appeal to different people based on what they like and don’t like. However, in terms of judging the houses based on scares, set designs, and demand, we’re okay with this being our “unofficial,” but somehow official ranking for HHN 32. As the spooky season continues on, we’ll revisit our list as we venture back to Halloween Horror Nights throughout the fall. HHN at Universal Orlando runs through November 4th on select nights. Tickets can be purchased through Universal online.

Halloween Horror Nights arrive at Universal Orlando, Universal Studios Hollywood

haunted horror nights 2023 houses

Spooky season is officially here.

Universal Orlando Resort kicked off its longest-ever Halloween Horror Nights last Friday, and Universal Studios Hollywood 's HHN opened this week.

Both events share a lot in common, including five intellectual property house themes, but each coast does HHN a little differently, with experiences unique to their location and year.

"The great thing about Horror Nights and what separates this event from any other haunted event is the level of immersion we give the moment you walk through that gate," Mike Aiello, Universal Orlando Resort's senior director of Entertainment Creative Development, told USA TODAY. "This event shifts and changes every single year. We never do the same event twice, so that experience is going to be unique to this year and will be completely different next year."

Here's what longtime fans and newcomers should know about Halloween Horror Nights 2023.

What are the themes for Halloween Horror Nights 2023?

Guests can visit five intellectual property haunted houses in Florida and California. IP houses are popular because they bring to life characters whom fans are used to only seeing on screen and possibly in their nightmares .

▶ Chucky: Ultimate Kill Count is Chucky's first solo house. It's inspired by the killer doll’s namesake film series and USA & SYFY show. “A true sadistic killer, Chucky has been mired in the agony of disrespect he feels from his peers at not being taken seriously,” according to Universal. “Thus begins his quest to turn his haunted house into a living slaughterhouse by killing every person who enters.”

▶ The Exorcist: Believer is inspired by the upcoming film with the same title by Universal Pictures and Blumhouse and Morgan Creek Entertainment. “Guests will be transported to a bustling street market in Haiti, where an innocent purchase of a strange folk doll with three eyes leads to the opening of a demonic portal, the awakening of sinister spirits and the subsequent disappearance of two 12-year-old girls in the U.S,” according to Universal. When the girls reappear, “it soon becomes clear that only an exorcism can save them – and everyone who comes in contact with them, including unwitting guests, is suddenly at risk of losing their souls.”

▶ The Last of Us "will propel guests into a world of carnage and mayhem as they follow in the footsteps of (its namesake video) game’s protagonists, Joel and Ellie, who endure a brutal journey in a world overtaken by a fungal virus that turns humans into various forms of a new threat known as the Infected,” Universal Studios previously revealed.

▶ Stranger Things returns with a new house inspired by Season 4 of the hit Netflix show. "Guests will find themselves on the front line of Vecna's deadly attacks on the citizens of Hawkins while traveling through iconic scenes, including the notorious Hawkins Lab, the enigmatic  Creel House  and Vecna's chilling mind lair," Universal announced in July.

▶ Universal Monsters: Unmasked takes guests deep into the Catacombs of Paris, where they’ll face iconic foes from Universal’s cinematic library: The Phantom of the Opera, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and The Invisible Man Dr. Jack Griffin. Universal said “these desperate and dangerous fiends have become filled with a rage toward guests navigating the twisted tunnels of their underground labyrinth home."

Hollywood vs. Orlando: What's the difference between Universal Studios parks?

What else is there at Universal Studios Hollywood?

In addition to the five IP themes shared with Orlando, Universal Studios Hollywood has an Evil Dead Rise house inspired by this year's film of the same name and New Line Cinema's "Evil Dead" franchise.

The Southern California park also created two original haunted houses:

▶ Monstruos: The Monsters of Latin America is an entirely new house featuring "the most terrifying ghosts and creatures from Latin American folklore," according to the park.

▶ Holidayz in Hell takes "visitors on a petrifying trip through a series of psychotic seasonal celebrations," the park announced. There was also a Holidayz in Hell house in 2019 , but this will be different.

There are three new scare zones:

▶  Ghostz welcomes guests with "a horde of blood-soaked, chainsaw-wielding ghosts," according to the park.

▶  Toyz brings evil toys to life through a wicked toymaker's dark magic.

▶  El Terror de las Momias is an extension of the Monstruos: The Monsters of Latin America haunted house, featuring "an ancient army of unearthed mummies," according to the park.

Additionally, the popular Terror Tram returns with a new twist. Terror Tram... The Exterminatorz immerses guests in "an insect uprising led by the devious Larry Larva whose goal is to exterminate humans from the Earth," the park said of the experience set in Universal's famous backlot . "Horror fans will also walk along the Jupiter’s Claim set from "Nope"where they will encounter The Tethered from "Us"in an epic crossover from two of director Jordan Peele’s blockbusters."

Hollywood's event also features a new live show, The Purge: Dangerous Waters , which will include "adrenaline-filled action sequences, stunts, spectacular lighting and laser effects, high fall fire burns and massive explosions" in the WaterWorld venue.

Blumhouse fans will also want to check out a new experience in the DreamWorks Theatre called Blumhouse: Behind the Screams. HHN guests can see authentic props and costumes from the production house's myriad horror films and a frightening surprise.

And once again, Death Eaters descend upon the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, looking for others to join them in following Voldemort.

What's unique to HHN at Universal Orlando?

Universal Orlando has five original haunted houses unique to its location, bringing its total house count to 10. Here’s how they’re described:

▶ Dr. Oddfellow: Twisted Origins : “In the 1930s Dust Bowl era, guests won’t be able to resist going inside Dr. Oddfellow’s menacing menagerie of twisted oddities where they’ll encounter grotesquely distorted animals and freakish fiends …The price to enter this creepy caravan is steep as souls feed his immortal power.”

▶ Dueling Dragons: Choose Thy Fate : “The great wizard Merlyn has been transformed into the Enchanted Oak, leaving a power vacuum. When two powerful warlocks invade his castle to steal his spell book, they are turned into dragons of fire and ice. Now guests are caught in the middle of their battle and are forced to choose a path and a victor.” Guests will get to choose a path at the end of the house to see who wins.

▶ YETI: Campground Kills : “In a 1950s campground, a group of towering, terrifying yetis are running rampant, ripping apart campers, rangers and anyone else who gets in their way … Guests must flee through the campground into cabins, a bait shack and even the outhouse in hopes of making it to the ranger tower before it’s too late.”

▶ The Darkest Deal : “In the Mississippi Delta, blues musician Pinestraw Spruce meets at a crossroads with a diabolical entity known as The Collector to make a deal: his soul for musical glory. Guests will witness his big break performing for a crowd before The Collector drags him to Hades with the other musicians who learned the terrible price of fame.”

▶ Bloodmoon: Dark Offerings : “Colonial-era villagers begin to worship the moon obsessively. When the blood moon rises at their fall festival, they take it as a sign that they must hunt down any non-followers within their village. Guests will need to try not to become part of the sacrifice as they gather body parts to form a grisly offering.”

The Florida resort also features five different scare zones connected to Dr. Oddfellow.

"This is the first time in a long time that we've have a narrative that binds all of our scare zones together, and it's something we're really excited by," Aiello said. "We have an icon this year in Dr. Oddfellow. He is the character that's kind of brought this event into existence this year. And guests will meet him as soon as they come in through the front gate."

▶ Dr. Oddfellow’s Collection of Horror : “Dr. Oddfellow will lure guests into Halloween Horror Nights with a promise of immortality. As he lifts the veil on all the horrors to come, they’ll soon realize they may not even survive the night.”

▶ Dark Zodiac : “Dr. Oddfellow has entered a dark dimension to harness the power of the Zodiac and live forever. He twists the signs into malevolent beings who foretell one’s doom. As his star rises, yours falls.”

▶ Jungle of Doom: Expedition Horror : “In the 1920s, Dr. Oddfellow ventured deep into the darkest jungle, performing horrific experiments on nature. Now his monstrous creatures are running amok and on the hunt.”

▶ Vamp ’69: Summer of Blood : “At a 60s music fest in a small New York town, guests will jam to popular bands with fellow concert-goers until Dr. Oddfellow unleashes vicious vampires on the audience.”

▶ Shipyard 32: Horrors Unhinged : “Enter a 1940s San Francisco shipping yard full of mysterious crates and cages bearing Dr. Oddfellow’s symbol. Beware, his nightmarish oddities have now escaped spreading fear and chaos in their wake.”

Universal Orlando's popular Nightmare Fuel show is back with a new story: Nightmare Fuel Revenge Dream . The racy, live shows are known for pounding music, dazzling pyrotechnic and aerial performances, and provocative costumes and dancing.

Guests will also want to watch for pop-up appearances by Death Eaters in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter - Diagon Alley, M3GAN dancers and David S. Pumpkins of " Saturday Night Live " fame.

Which is the scariest house at this year's Halloween Horror Nights? We survived HHN32 to find out!

Universal Orlando Resort Halloween Horror Nights HHN32

Each fall the dark and twisted Halloween Horror Nights takes over Universal Studios Florida.

At this ticketed event, fans of All Hallow's Eve are immersed in the giddy horror as the park becomes home to 10 haunted houses and 5 ghoulish scare zones, all filled with delightfully wicked treats to eat.

This year you will find yourself chased by chainsaw wielding scare actors, come face to face with a hoard of Megans or take in a show that sees you head into the world of ghoulish nightmares.

HHN32 features an all new icon named Dr. Oddfellow and runs for a record-breaking 48 nights this spooky season as the event celebrates its 32nd event.

HHN32 contains big names we all know and love like Naughty Dog's The Last of Us and Stranger Things season 4. It even has some home-grown stories like the return of Duelling Dragons and Dr. Oddfellow's Twisted Origins

Universal Orlando Resort kindly invited WhatCulture to take an R.I.P Tour of all the houses that feature at HHN32. In one night we got to experience everything that HHN has to offer with a group of brave, horror loving individuals.

When ranking each house we've tried to stay as neutral as possible, judging each on the story, scares and overall design.

We've attempted to keep this review of the houses as spoiler free as possible.

10. Chucky: Ultimate Kill Count

Universal Orlando Resort Halloween Horror Nights HHN32

Chucky: Ultimate Kill Count had some great moments with Chucky dolls, especially the very first Chucky that greeted you as you entered the house.

If you are fan of Chucky you will definitely enjoy all the different kills from the new television show and the movies. It was nice that although it centred around the tv series, the classic movies were not completely forgotten or ignored.

Compared to the other houses of the night, Chucky: Ultimate Kill Count felt like it lacked a bit of something. It wasn't as scary as some of the other houses and didn't have the same elaborate sets. We struggled to hear what all the different Chuckys on the screens throughout the house were saying.

Universal Orlando Resort Halloween Horror Nights HHN32

It's likely that multiple visits to Chucky: Ultimate Kill Count will improve its rankings, but in a one off visit that many guests might experience, other mazes will envelop you into the story better

As a fan of Chucky it feels sad to place this at the bottom of the list, but the other houses at HHN32 were overall better than this one.

Jen Gallie hasn't written a bio just yet, but if they had... it would appear here.

Everything to Know About Universal Studios' Halloween Horror Nights 2023

Including all the themes of the houses.

  • Universal Studios is starting to release information about its 2023 Halloween Horror Nights, and the first two announced haunted houses will be based on The Last of Us and Stranger Things .
  • Halloween Horror Nights will take place in September and October in both Orlando, Florida and Los Angeles, California.
  • Tickets are already on sale for the event.

Stranger Things fans can try to escape "Vecna's Curse."

It's time to break out the old Hellfire Club t-shirt and get ready for a trip to Hawkins, Indiana — or at least the upside-down version of it.

According to a press release from Universal Studios, the Stranger Things -themed haunted house will have fans re-living the evil Vecna's assaults on the town. Guests will have to travel to places like the infamous Creel House, the nefarious Hawkins Lab and even Vecna's all-red Mind Lair. "Along the way, guests will confront their deepest fears and come face to face with otherworldly creatures like demobats and even Vecna himself," it says. Here's hoping you have your Kate Bush all cued up on your Walkman.

The Last of Us -themed haunted house brings guests into the world of Joel and Ellie.

the poster for the universal studio halloween horror nights features an image of joel and ellie from the game

The Last of Us was the first haunted house theme announced for this year's Halloween festivities, and Universal says in a press release that visitors will be entering "a world of carnage and mayhem" as they navigate a labyrinth full of Runners, Stalkers, Clickers and Hunters.

This version of The Last of Us seems more inspired by the video game than the television show. Fans of the show who haven't played the PlayStation version certainly won't feel left out though, since the show hews so closely to the game: Both focus on the relationship between Joel and Ellie as they try to navigate a post-zombie-infected world. But Naughty Dog, the video game studio behind The Last of Us , is developing the park attraction in celebration of the game's 10th anniversary. The attraction will also include iconic video game locations, like The Hotel Grand. “As a massive fan – and frequent attendee – of Halloween Horror Nights, we are honored to have The Last of Us included in this year’s lineup," Naughty Dog co-president Neil Druckmann said in a statement. "It has been an incredible thrill for us at Naughty Dog to collaborate with Universal, bringing the world of the game to life, focusing on even the tiniest details that our fans know so well."

Chucky makes a return.

Last year, Universal announced there would be a Chucky-themed attraction based on the hit Syfy show — and they're as good as their word. While he's been seen around Universal in years past, the horror icon will star in a haunted house — Called "Chucky: Ultimate Kill Count" — for the first time. "Chucky has been mired in the agony of disrespect he feels from his peers at not being taken seriously," Universal said in a press release. "Thus begins his quest to turn his haunted house into a living slaughterhouse by killing every person who enters."

Other haunts have been announced, including haunted houses based on The Exorcist: Believer and the classic Universal Monsters.

That second one is a no-brainer (no zombie puns intended), seeing as the Universal Monsters are expected to be a focus of Universal's upcoming Epic Universe theme park . In "Universal: Monsters Unmasked," guests will head down to catacombs where they might run across classic haunts, including The Phantom of the Opera, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and The Invisible Man. Guns N' Roses guitarist Slash is providing an original soundtrack to the labyrinth.

But if you're looking for a newer scare, there will be another house themed to the new Exorcist movie, The Exorcist: Believer. There, park guests will run afoul of two possessed 12-year-old girls, and their own souls will be in danger.

Tickets are already on sale.

The haunted houses will be available at both Universal Studios Hollywood and Universal Orlando Resort . What's more, tickets are already on sale for the event. Halloween Horror Nights runs select nights from September 1 – October 31 in Florida and from September 7 – October 31 in California. Ticket prices start at $74 – $79 dollars, but then you have the options to buy add-ons like early admission, express passes, special tours and even vacation packages, depending on the park.

Is protection from being infected by the dreaded Cordyceps "zombie fungus" included? No — that's all on you, so you better practice your evasive maneuvers before you go.

The Exorcist: Believer

Inspired by Universal Pictures’ terrifying new horror film from Blumhouse and Morgan Creek Entertainment (in theaters Friday, October 13), “The Exorcist: Believer” haunted house will unleash an entirely new level of terror to Halloween Horror Nights. In this new chapter, guests will be transported to a bustling street market in Haiti, where an innocent purchase of a strange folk doll with three eyes leads to the opening of a demonic portal, the awakening of sinister spirits and the subsequent disappearance of two 12-year-old girls in the U.S. The girls are found three days later with no memory of what happened to them. After the girls begin to exhibit unsettling behavior, it soon becomes clear that only an exorcism can save them – and everyone who comes in contact with them, including unwitting guests, is suddenly at risk of losing their souls.

Chucky: Ultimate Kill Count

Inspired by the hit USA & SYFY series and cult classic films, “Chucky: Ultimate Kill Count” casts this killer doll as the star of his very own haunted house for the first time. A true sadistic killer, Chucky has been mired in the agony of disrespect he feels from his peers at not being taken seriously. Thus begins his quest to turn his haunted house into a living slaughterhouse by killing every person who enters.

Universal Monsters: Unmasked

Lurking sixty feet beneath the bustling streets of the City of Lights, the dank Catacombs of Paris house a much darker secret. . . The all-new haunted house “Universal Monsters: Unmasked” takes guests down into the infamous burial grounds where every corner and crevice overflows with millions of skeletal remains and even more sinister secrets. Deep within the Catacombs, Universal’s most notorious creatures – The Phantom of the Opera, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Dr. Jekyll and his deranged alternate personality Mr. Hyde, and Dr. Jack Griffin, aka The Invisible Man – also lie in wait as they bide their time and seek vengeance against guests after the opening of the Catacombs to public visitation. These desperate and dangerous fiends have become filled with a rage toward guests navigating the twisted tunnels of their underground labyrinth home. It is here, in the darkness, where they hunt these trespassers and where the sounds of guests’ screams will go unheard.

Ranking ALL the Houses of Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Orlando

haunted horror nights 2023 houses

Halloween Horror Nights has officially kicked off in Universal Orlando!

haunted horror nights 2023 houses

This year’s event runs from September 1st to November 4th and we’ve already seen the announcements for  all the haunted houses ,  eats, and more entertainment coming to the event . Now, we have our ranking of every house at this year’s event.

**Warning: If you want to avoid graphic images, or remain unspoiled about what is featured in the houses, you may want to stop reading now!**

Before we break down all of the houses, our team wants to emphasize that we don’t think there are ANY bad houses this year ! In fact, we think each one is worth experiencing , which is not something we’ve said for MANY years. Now without further ado, let’s get into it!

10. Dr. Oddfellow’s Twisted Origins

NOW WAIT, before you get mad at us, we’re NOT saying this is a bad house! We loved this house because we love Dr. Oddfellow and having a house dedicated to his history and the event itself is so creative .

haunted horror nights 2023 houses

If you don’t like clowns, DO NOT go in this house , because they’re everywhere. There’s definitely plenty of scares with the killer circus vibe , and we loved the cool effects as well.

haunted horror nights 2023 houses

If you’re a fan of HHN and have been going for years, this house is a MUST-DO, because it follows the story of Dr. Oddfellow AND Jack The Clown .

9. The Last of Us

We really loved how well this house did putting you in the world of Joel and Ellie, especially because the original actors from the video game recorded new lines for the house!

haunted horror nights 2023 houses

However, the house relies a lot on strobe lighting that didn’t feel as well-designed as it did in other houses . It was also much more jumpscare-reliant than anything else, so there weren’t many memorable scenes.

haunted horror nights 2023 houses

The set also doesn’t feel as impressive as it could , so it actually was our least favorite house, BUT it gets put in the number 9 spot because of its IP and doing The Last of Us justice.

8. Bloodmoon: Dark Offerings

The plot of this house is that the kill cult is working on an effigy of bodies that you can see developing as you go through the house. It’s definitely the goriest of them all , but the story wasn’t our favorite .

haunted horror nights 2023 houses

It was also really heavy on the disturbing sights that may make more squeamish attendees have to look away.

haunted horror nights 2023 houses

However, the set of this house is AMAZING. The designer was the same person who did the Dead Man’s Pier: Winter’s Wake haunted house a few years back, and it’s clear in the design choices. We think it’s worth going through just to see the set.

7. The Darkest Deal

We really enjoyed the concept of this house because it’s almost literally the devil went down to Georgia . Plus, we think the design of the devil character is so creative — he starts as a smarmy southern man, slowly transitions into a devil throughout the house, and then you see him in his final form at the end.

haunted horror nights 2023 houses

While the set of this house isn’t as impressive, we really enjoyed the special effects. Near the end of the house, be sure to watch the onstage musician closely — you can literally SEE his soul being stolen out of his chest!

haunted horror nights 2023 houses

This one is very dark, which means it feels spooky and scary instead of just visually creepy sights and jumpscares.

6. The Exorcist: Believer

Our friends were a little disappointed that the story of this house follows the new film coming out soon instead of the original, but it serves as a living trailer, so it can help you decide if you want to go see the film.

haunted horror nights 2023 houses

However, it’s VERY terrifying . The actors playing the two possessed girls do a phenomenal job because they show up everywhere, and their makeup and behaviors are beyond scary.

haunted horror nights 2023 houses

The house also has a literal smell of rot to it (points for immersive theming), and we noticed this one had lower waits most of the night, likely due to the extra scary premise . We think it’s very well done!

5. Universal Monsters: Unmasked

We really loved this house — especially how cool the set is at the start of the house — you start out in the streets of Paris and end up in the catacombs.

haunted horror nights 2023 houses

We really love the classic horror feel to this one and think that’s what makes it feel so different from other houses. We also really enjoyed the jumpscares and extra elements added to the monsters’ stories.

haunted horror nights 2023 houses

Like, the phantom started stealing other people’s faces to wear as his own. See what we mean? Classic, creepy horror!

4. Stranger Things

This was, understandably, very popular due to the success of the show. This also means that if you’ve seen the show, you’re much less likely to be scared because you know what’s coming, and you get to see your favorite characters .

haunted horror nights 2023 houses

The house tells the story of Season 4 VERY well , and there are plenty of jumpscares to get you.

haunted horror nights 2023 houses

However, some of the Halloween Horror Nights veterans we were with said they thought the scale of this one is lacking a bit in comparison to Stranger Things houses in years past . But if you’re a Stranger Things fan, we definitely recommend it to see your favorite characters, and if you’re not, then you won’t know what to expect!

3. YETI: Campground Kills

This was so surprisingly fun ! This is a sillier house for sure, as the story is that a family of yetis (including a baby yeti) have attacked a campground.

haunted horror nights 2023 houses

This house had a lot of scary gags , like a snake in a toilet, because really, who isn’t scared of that?

haunted horror nights 2023 houses

Plus, we think the yetis themselves are really cool and well-designed. Plus, HHN fans can keep an eye out for the HHN Bear !

2. Chucky: Ultimate Kill Count

We thought this house was the perfect combination of recognizable IP, cool effects, exciting sets, silliness, and tons of scares !

haunted horror nights 2023 houses

We honestly weren’t expecting this one to be as scary as it was , and we think it’s even on par with the scariness level of The Exorcist House! The scares are so well planned to really surprise you, so it’s hard to know what’s coming.

haunted horror nights 2023 houses

This also feels like one of the longest houses , which just enhances the experience. But the humor of it being Chucky really does help make this a very well-rounded experience.

1. Dueling Dragons: Choose Thy Fate

And in the number one spot is Dueling Dragons! This is a HUGE win for Universal fans  because Dueling Dragons was the beloved coaster in Merlin’s Woods when Islands of Adventure first opened and was taken out before Harry Potter World was built.

haunted horror nights 2023 houses

The story is brought to life thanks to two warlocks, fire and ice, as they fight in an incredible castle set. You really do choose your fate in this house as well, because there are FOUR different endings ! You choose fire or ice at the beginning and can get a good or bad ending on both sides.

haunted horror nights 2023 houses

This one is less scary than others but has spectacular sets that deserve to be doted on . Our group raved about it all night, even those who were adverse to the scares of HHN, and we heard others saying the same throughout the night.

Now you can officially start mapping out your plan for your visit. Here’s a list of all the haunted houses:

A. Bloodmoon: Dark Offerings B. The Exorcist: Believer C. Stranger Things D. Dueling Dragons: Choose Thy Fate E. YETI: Campground Kills F. Chucky: Ultimate Kill Count G. Dr. Oddfellow’s Twisted Origins H. The Darkest Deal I. The Last of Us J. Universal Monsters: Unmasked

haunted horror nights 2023 houses

Get ready for a spine-chilling experience at Halloween Horror Nights 2023! We’ve ranked the 10 haunted houses from slightly spooky to absolutely terrifying. Don’t miss our top pick!

From The Last of Us to Dueling Dragons: A Sneak Peek into the Haunted Houses

As the days get shorter and the air gets cooler, the lure of Halloween  Horror Nights at Universal Orlando is impossible to ignore. Now in its 32nd year, the event is reaching new heights of fright. Universal has rolled out a roster of both original and franchise-based haunted houses, including high-profile IPs like Stranger Things, The Last of Us, and The Exorcist.

Beyond the haunted houses, the atmosphere is amped up with five Scare Zones, all under the sinister control of this year’s mastermind, Dr. Oddfellow. Let’s not forget the show-stopping live performances and sinfully delicious themed foods. All these elements combine to create a frightfully fun evening, running on select nights until November 4.

The IP Corner: Popular Franchises Take the Stage

If you’re a fan of terrifying tales, the roster this year is like a dream—albeit a nightmare. The Exorcist: Believer and Chucky: Ultimate Kill Count join the ranks, along with a returning favorite—Stranger Things, which takes a leaf from its upcoming fourth season. Then there’s The Last of Us, offering nostalgia and homage but missing that spine-chilling factor.

An Homage to Originality: Dr. Oddfellow Steals the Show

Dr. Oddfellow isn’t just another face in the crowd; he’s the soul of Halloween Horror Nights this year. Resurfacing after decades, he’s setting the Scare Zones ablaze with his eerie quest for immortality, inviting you to partake—though beware, his offerings might just cost you your soul.

Must-Visit Haunted Houses According to Horror Aficionados

10. dueling dragons: choose thy fate.

Universal has always known how to give nods to nostalgia, and this house based on the Dueling Dragons roller coaster is no exception. It’s less of a horror story and more of an epic medieval drama.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Halloween Horror Nights (@horrornightsorl)

9. The Last of Us

Despite its iconic status in the  gaming world , this house may not give you the creeps. But if you’re a fan of the franchise, the impeccable design and sound effects will sweep you off your feet.

8. Chucky: Ultimate Kill Count

This house perfectly recreates scenes from the Child’s Play franchise, delivering a genuine blast of nostalgia, but it falls short of being consistently terrifying.

Stepping into the World of Monsters and Myths

7. universal monsters: unmasked.

Experience classic horror icons like Dracula and the Invisible Man reimagined for a modern audience. The Paris setting adds a new layer of charm to this house.

6. Stranger Things 4

Elevated by the recent season’s darker tone, this house delivers more chills than previous Stranger Things houses at Halloween Horror Nights.

5. YETI: Campground Kills

Don’t be deceived by the humorous marketing—this house is eerily lifelike, featuring genius use of silhouettes and ambient screams.

The Ultimate Terrifying Experiences

4. dr. oddfellow’s twisted origins.

Delving into the world of carnivals, this house offers an unsettling atmosphere where Dr. Oddfellow lurks around every corner, ready to trade your soul for something far more sinister.

3. The Darkest Deal

A unique blend of music and horror, this house surprises visitors with its thematic depth and unnerving aura.

2. Bloodmoon: Dark Offerings

Drawing inspiration from Colonial-era history and dark witchcraft, this house offers a relentless series of scares that leave you deeply unsettled.

1. The Exorcist: Believer

Prepare for an unprecedented level of horror. This haunted house based on the upcoming Exorcist sequel takes the top spot for its intense scares and the unsettling feeling it leaves in your bones.

Don’t let this Halloween pass without a visit to Halloween Horror Nights 32 at Universal Orlando. Grab your tickets and optional add-ons now at universalorlando.com/hhn.

Universal Studios Orlando Halloween Horror Nights 2023 Review

From “best monster mash-up” to “best blood and gore,” handing out superlatives to the haunts and mazes of the 32nd annual graveyard smash.

Universal Studios Orlando Halloween Horror Nights 2023 Review - IGN Image

With All Hallows' Eve just a couple weeks away, spooky season is officially here. Of course, the scares started creeping up the calendar much sooner at Universal Orlando Resort, where the park's annual Halloween Horror Nights event has been raising goosebumps and chilling spines since September 1. That month-plus of frights has mostly come courtesy of the celebration's 10, elaborate haunted houses, including an especially terrifying take on acclaimed PlayStation game The Last of Us .

But while Joel and Ellie's inclusion on this year's roster has fueled its fair share of nightmares, HHN's other walk-through attractions also deserve your screams. As any horror enthusiast worth their weight in spilled entrails knows, however, those cries of terror can be triggered by any number of very specific elements – from the monster lurking beneath your bed to the clown peering through your window. With that in mind, we braved this year's slate of mazes and broke them down by distinct categories catering to fright fans of all stripes. Read on, if you dare.

Universal Orlando's Halloween Horror Nights 2023 Gallery

haunted horror nights 2023 houses

Best Storytelling: The Darkest Deal

If you like your scares supported by absorbing storytelling, you'll want to sign up for The Darkest Deal, the rare haunted house that prioritizes narrative progression and character development as much as nightmare-conjuring encounters. Guests follow the career path of Pinestraw Spruce, a fledgling Mississippi Delta musician who finally finds success after making the titular pact with the menacing “Collector.”

While Spruce's journey introduces its share of frightening foes, the assortment of hellspawn and other unsavory characters never overshadows the story. From the opening scene – where we see Spruce accepting the terms of the doomed deal – to the moment we witness his soul being sucked from his body, The Darkest Deal spins one of the event's most comprehensive, compelling tales.

Most Meta Approach: Chucky Ultimate Kill Count

haunted horror nights 2023 houses

Universal Creative could’ve easily crafted a Chucky attraction based on the possessed plaything's popular Syfy series, scared the pants off park patrons, and called it a day. But the twisted minds behind this year's event had a decidedly more disturbing idea: What if the “real” Chucky – furious to discover no one's actually meeting a grisly end in his haunted house – crashed the party to guarantee a high corpse count?

This refreshingly self-aware approach sees the terrifying toy possessing the house's 250 Chucky dolls, spurring his red-headed army to carry out a seemingly endless variety of creative, gore-soaked kills. The clever concept even finds some of the attraction's live performers reacting in utter terror to Chucky taking matters into his own, murderous hands. A fun finishing touch sees survivors passing beneath a digital counter tallying the night's deaths.

Most Inspired Concept: Dueling Dragons: Choose Thy Fate

haunted horror nights 2023 houses

Given a passing glance, this maze might seem like a better fit for a Renaissance fair than Universal's annual fright fest. (Not to be confused with Six Flags’ annual Fright Fest.) But don't let the medieval castle setting and Merlin's whimsical greeting fool you, as Universal Creative has brilliantly re-imagined one of the resort's retired roller coasters – Islands of Adventure's Dueling Dragons – into a house that blends high fantasy with hair-raising horror.

The inspired result is an experience that retains the ride's original tale of rival warlocks battling it out before being turned into fire- and ice-spewing dragons, while complementing the established yarn with plenty of fresh, terrifying touches. These include a cast of jump scare-inducing creatures – many enhanced by pulse-spiking effects representing the warlocks' respective elemental powers – as well as an impressive appearance from the titular beasts. Toss in multiple endings – a cool callback to the coaster's dual tracks – and we can't wait to see which bygone attraction gets the haunted house treatment next.

What's your favorite haunted house or maze at Halloween Horror Nights 2023?

Most fan-pleasing adaptation: the last of us.

haunted horror nights 2023 houses

If you've never experienced PlayStation hit The Last of Us , or watched the acclaimed HBO series it recently spawned, this house will feel like familiar zombie-apocalypse fare. That said, if you're already acquainted with Joel and Ellie's journey – particularly the pair's harrowing trek through Hunter-occupied Pittsburgh – you're in for one of the evening's best attractions.

An incredibly authentic adaptation with skyrocketing production values to spare, this Infected-filled house is a heart-stopping romp that essentially puts brave guests inside the world of the game. On top of recreating iconic scenes and unleashing a relentless lineup of fungally-altered favorites – from Stalkers and Clickers to Runners and Bloaters – the house packs enough fan-pleasing shoutouts, nods, and Easter eggs to fill a FEDRA quarantine zone.

Best Monster Mash-up: Universal Monsters: Unmasked

You needn't navigate more than a handful of the night’s mazes to encounter enough ghouls, ghosts, creatures, and creeps to fuel a lifetime of nightmares. While you'll meet everything from colonial-era cultists to creepy carnival folk, few of the featured foes will prey on your fragile nerves like the Universal Classic Monsters.

Luring unsuspecting guests into a creature-quadruple-feature of sorts, Universal Monsters: Unmasked pits patrons against the Phantom of the Opera, the Hunchback of Notre Dame, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and the Invisible Man. Supported by stunning makeup, costumes, and sets – including the atmospheric, lantern-illuminated streets of Paris – the attraction trades the classic versions of these movie monsters for gory, graphic reinterpretations that wouldn't look out of place in a viscera-splattered slasher flick.

Most Unexpected Connected Universe: Dr. Oddfellow's Twisted Origins

haunted horror nights 2023 houses

Film and television aren't the only mediums cashing in on the connected-universe craze, as HHN's Dr. Oddfellow's Twisted Origins could give Marvel a run for its multiverse. While this maze initially looks like another gruesome circus packed with creepy clowns and scary carnies, the bloody big top is actually a decades-in-the-making deep dive into one of the event's original creations.

Established as one of HHN's “icons” 20-plus years ago, Dr. Oddfellow returns to take center stage, stealing souls and scaring guests with an especially twisted assortment of circus acts – the bullwhip-wielding dude in the pink tutu and animal mask still haunts us. But more than breathing fresh life – and death – into the “killer clown” trope, this one digs into the origins of the ringmaster/fake physician, as well as his most famous victim, Jack the Clown. Those brave enough to further explore Oddfellow's story can visit the park's five open-air “scare zones,” all of which are also tied to the disturbing doc.

Best Blood and Gore: Bloodmoon: Dark Offerings

If it's good old fashioned graphic violence you crave, Bloodmoon: Dark Offerings has your back – and maybe your ritually sacrificed spine, too. Featuring enough severed heads, lopped limbs, and exposed innards to turn the stomach of a slaughterhouse worker, this one is definitely not shy about flaunting its fake blood budget.

But it's not all about gory shock value either, as this richly detailed house effectively transports visitors to a colonial-era community populated by lunar-obsessed cultists. Even as these robed, chanting fanatics hunt us non-believers with their blades, it's hard not to appreciate the haunting beauty of the set design, as well as its ability to immerse visitors in its unsettling alternate history. That said, it'll probably be the towering, sacrificial totem made of body parts that'll stick with you long after you exit (escape?).

Best TV-inspired Haunted House: Stranger Things 4

haunted horror nights 2023 houses

Over 32 years, Halloween Horror Nights has adapted countless genre films and TV series, accurately retelling their stories via impressive sets, cool effects, and talented live actors. This year's Stranger Things' house retains this authentic approach and attention to detail, but adopts more of a “greatest hits” position in recreating the series' recent batch of Vecna-haunted episodes.

For fans, this means being placed in the middle – quite literally – of some of the season's most iconic moments and memorable encounters. Walking right between Eleven and Henry Creel, while the former blasts the latter into the Upside Down, is a highlight, as is any scene reacquainting us with fan-favorite Hellfire Club leader Eddie Munson. Whether you're seeking a season 4 recap or just can't get enough of Kate Bush's “Running Up Tthat Hill,” this one delivers like a piping hot Surfer Boy pizza.

Best Blend of Humor and Horror: Yeti: Campground Kills

If you prefer your horror with a helping of dark humor, Yeti: Campground Kills should occupy the top spot on your HHN itinerary. Set in a '50s-era National Park, this maze finds a crew of not-so-happy campers besieged by a family of the hairy, mythical beasts.

The towering creatures rack up quite the kill count, leaving more than a few bloody, detached limbs in their wake. But while the many mutilated corpses will send a chill down your spine, the colorful, B movie-inspired cast and story will stretch a smile across your face. From the pissed-off woman with apparent plans to fend off the intruders with a frying pan to the outdoor retirement party that had the unfortunate luck of being scheduled during the Yeti apocalypse, the morbid humor often steals the spotlight from the rampaging monsters.

Best Film Adaptation: The Exorcist: Believer

haunted horror nights 2023 houses

Billing this attraction as a movie adaptation is cheating a bit since the film it’s based on hadn’t yet been released when the house first welcomed guests. That said, this scream-eliciting take on the 50-years-later sequel to The Exorcist works brilliantly as a real-life, immersion-ratcheting teaser that’ll immediately put the recently released movie on your radar.

Beginning with a tense setup surrounding a pair of missing teenage girls, the maze quickly goes from unsettling to utterly terrifying when the story jumps ahead. While the teens are apparently found, they return home… different. More specifically, they've been possessed by a demonic entity that transforms them into two of the most blood-curdling kids this side of The Shining's Grady twins. Toss in a chilling exorcism scene that only seems to anger the possessed pair, and this house is better – and scarier – than its source material.

Is Halloween Horror Nights Appropriate for Kids? What to Know About the PG-13 Event at Universal Orlando

PEOPLE dives into the annual Halloween event, speaking with a park official, a mental health expert and a mom whose son started attending at 8 years old

Halloween Horror Nights has been chilling spooky-thrill lovers for more than three decades, but one essential question still plagues park goers: Is the event appropriate for kids?

Having kicked off in 1991 — first as Universal Studios Fright Nights — Halloween Horror Nights (or HHN) contains many scary elements that are generally considered more appropriate for an adult crowd. There are haunted houses representing a variety of original-concept horrors and creatures from well-known intellectual properties — this year, that includes The Exorcist: Believer , Chucky: Ultimate Kill Count , returning favorite  Stranger Thing s and the  Last of Us video game.

There are also Scare Zones that feature lots of fake blood, sinister set pieces and roaming "scareactors," who entertain guests in costumes and grotesque makeup.

It's a total transformation from the park's family friendly daytime offerings and has left many fans wondering at what age kids should attend.

PEOPLE spoke with Lora Sauls, Universal Orlando Resort's Senior Manager of the Creative Development Group and Show Direction; Jennifer Whitfield, a licensed mental-health counselor and registered play therapist; and Jessica Correa, an Orlando mom with a horror-loving tween, for their best insights about all the tricks and treats.

Never miss a story — sign up for  PEOPLE's free daily newsletter  to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from juicy celebrity news to compelling human-interest stories.

"I will say, first off, that our event is labeled PG-13," says Sauls, reflecting the official language on the HHN website that reads, "WARNING: Event may be too intense for young children and is not recommended for children under the age of 13."

Sauls tells PEOPLE that rather than giving a one-size-fits-all recommendation for HHN, which also takes place at Universal Studios Hollywood in California, “I think it [just depends] on the kid,”

"The event overall is also really loud," she adds of another potential sensitivity for young visitors.

The haunted houses range in level of scariness, she notes.

There are "bloody and aggressive haunted houses" to be mindful of, but one that fits a "fantasy" genre this year is Dueling Dragons: Choose Thy Fate , based on the "iconic" roller coaster (which has since closed) at Universal's Islands of Adventure theme park.

A different type of house is Blood Moon: Dark Offerings , which Sauls says is "probably not one for the kids." As she explains of the maze's synopsis, "It is a colonial kill cult, and they're just killing everyone that doesn't believe in what they believe in, and they're making a human sacrifice kind of totem to the blood moon."

"There's definitely a mix, but ultimately our haunted houses are built to scare. So I'd just be cautious. We are out to scare people. That's why we call them scareactors," she says.

PEOPLE also chatted with Orlando-based mom Jessica Correa about her experience with a child who's a fan of the event. Her son Michael, who turns 13 later this month, has been attending HHN since he was 8 and has already gone more than 10 times this year.

Asked how she knew Michael was ready to experience it, Correa says he requested to go after being "fine with" movies like The Shining , so she agreed — with the stipulation that "if he likes it, we'll hang out in the Scare Zones. If not, we can leave."

"He just ate up the Scare Zones, and the scareactors did the same," she recalls. "They just loved interacting with him, so it was fun."

As for which house Michael considers the scariest this year? The Darkest Deal , whose storyline synopsis reads, "Blues musician Pinestraw Spruce will have to face the music after meeting with The Collector and trading his soul for musical glory." (Least scary for the soon-to-be teenager? Dueling Dragons: Choose Thy Fate. )

"My best advice is to take noise-canceling headphones or earplugs, because it's so loud in the houses," Correa says. "My son wore these bright-green headphones for three years, and then last year he moved to the earplugs. But that's my biggest advice, probably, to kind of dim down the stimulation that you're getting in the house."

Jennifer Whitfield , a licensed mental-health counselor and registered play therapist based in the Orlando area, tells PEOPLE that a parent's decision about whether to take their child to HHN "just comes down to knowing your kid," from what types of things regularly spook them to whether they get startled easily in general.

Whitfield suggests "checking in" with HHN-bound kids regularly, even if they previously said they wanted to attend — just to make sure that's still the case as their visit date approaches, as "they may have changed their mind" and not want to cause a fuss by voicing that fact.

If your child is " prone to anxiety already" HHN is "probably not the best place to go," she says.

Parents should keep an eye out after kids attend too. "It could be days or a week or two later, and you might start seeing these fears. Maybe they're not wanting to go to bed. It could be fears about something completely different — nothing even related to monsters or ghosts, but that reaction can come back in a different way," Whitfield says.

Whitfield says she has an 8-year-old daughter, and having been to HHN herself before, she knows it would be "too scary" for her own child.

Addressing parents who do choose to take their children, she adds, "Does that mean you're a bad parent or you're ruining your kid? Of course not. You just have to know your child."

Correa has some advice she'd give parents who go and get a little bit more than they bargained for in terms of their kids being too scared for the houses and Scare Zones, but not enough to want to leave the park altogether.

"Since some of the rides are open, ride the rides. And then there's the food — obviously they're leveling up every year with that, so try some spooky food," she suggests.

Another standout part of the event is the HHN Tribute Store , a walk-through that's part shop and part museum, featuring merchandise from HHNs past and present. This area is free from jump scares.

As for the Scare Zones, which are present throughout different areas of the park, Correa tells PEOPLE, "A lot of times, you can walk on the sidewalk," rather than down the pedestrian street, which is something a lot of people do "so they can see what's going on" but have less of a chance of being approached by a scareactor.

Going to Halloween Horror Nights for the last five years was like exposure therapy. Now, I love the jump scares.

  • Universal's Halloween Horror Nights is my favorite theme-park event, but it used to terrify me.
  • I've overcome my fears about the haunted houses and jump scares and enjoy the event.
  • Seth Gillihan, a clinical psychologist, said going year after year is a form of "exposure therapy."

Morning Brew Logo

I'm a theme-park journalist who's been covering happenings everywhere from California's Disneyland to Missouri's Silver Dollar City for over a decade, but for several years there was one event that was a hard "no" for me: Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Orlando.

Halloween Horror Nights takes place at Universal Studios parks in Florida, California, Japan, and Singapore each year and is beloved by fans of all things spooky across the globe. At my closest Halloween Horror Nights in Orlando , Florida, there are 10 terrifying haunted houses and five scare zones, where actors roam the streets providing plenty of jump scares.

I remember seven years ago when I moved from Maryland to Florida and first heard about Halloween Horror Nights — displays of tickets for the event at my local Publix gave me nightmares. But now, it's hands-down my favorite theme-park event of the year.

The first time I visited Halloween Horror Nights was a scream-filled blur

The first time I visited the park for this iconic event in September 2019, I remember posing for a photo with a scary clown from the film "Killer Klowns from Outer Space" and being afraid to even approach the character despite knowing he was literally an actor in a suit. I timidly walked up to the clown and took a photo far away from him, terrified look on my face and heart racing.

While I made it through several haunted houses and scare zones that night, my photo with Slim the Clown was the only image I snapped the entire night. I went through each house in a panic, screaming with my face buried in my husband's back. I don't remember much about it, but I remember being proud that I faced my fear.

It turned out I was putting myself through exposure therapy without knowing it

Now that it's become my favorite theme-park event of the year, I'm convinced that I trained myself out of being scared by being brave enough to go that first time. Seth Gillihan , a licensed psychologist and the author of " Retrain Your Brain : Cognitive Behavioral Therapy in 7 Weeks" who specializes in cognitive-behavioral therapy, agrees, and said that this was the beginning of my Halloween Horror Nights exposure therapy.

"If you do something that's scary, but not actually dangerous, and you do it over and over, eventually it stops being so scary," he said. "You do it gradually and progressively. We want to break down what you're afraid of doing into little steps."

As I continued attending Halloween Horror Nights, I felt braver each year

A few years and a few Halloween Horror Nights later, I found myself face-to-face with another clown, Jack, a terrifying original Universal character who has, in many ways, become a face of the event. During a photo opportunity with Jack, I had trouble determining if he was a mannequin or a character who would jump scare me, but I posed for the photo like a pro, only feeling mildly terrified — he was a mannequin, for the record.

That year, I made it through all 10 haunted houses and, while I still screamed into my husband's back the entire time, I felt myself taking more time to appreciate the horror-film-quality scenes inside each house. Because Universal is all about the movies, each haunted house feels like you're on a film set, and it's impossible for even a scaredy cat to ignore that level of artistry and storytelling.

Today, I look forward to attending Halloween Horror Nights, jump scares and all

Gillihan said the key to conquering something like the fear of Halloween Horror Nights is consistency, so going back year after year was the right move. "Just doing a one-off thing, it's brave, but it's not really therapy," he said. "The real change comes with the repetition, when your brain really learns that the fear that you have is not necessary and it can turn off that fear response."

I've attended for the past five years — including in 2020, when Universal only put up a few haunted houses and had the actors behind plexiglass due to the pandemic. Each year has become more exciting for me — and less scary. I'm still afraid in the sense that a good jump scare makes me scream or grab my husband for safety, but I know now that it's all just fun.

I've taught my brain to reinterpret how I feel about Halloween Horror Nights

Today, the event is something I look forward to all year long. In fact, I've become so obsessed with it that I spend time before I go watching the horror movies the haunted houses are based on and listening to podcasts about the history of the Halloween Horror Nights — there are lots of them, believe it or not — so I fully understand what's going on in each haunted house. In the great words of Aerosmith, "I don't want to miss a thing" where this event is concerned.

Gillihan said it's likely that by going so often, I've learned that Halloween Horror Nights is not actually dangerous, and that feeling a rush of adrenaline is something I can enjoy because I do not actually have anything to fear. "You might still feel the fear, but you've reinterpreted what fear means," Gillihan said of my newfound love for the event. "Some people enjoy the sensation of being scared when they know that the fear is something that's not actually dangerous. They come to tolerate and even seek that feeling of fear because it's no longer seen as danger, it's seen as something your body does or a response your brain has."

Basically, I've conquered my fear of fear. When I went to Halloween Horror Nights' opening weekend this year, I felt like it was way less scary. I still enjoyed screaming over jump scares and chaotic scenes, but I knew that I was in control.

In fact, I enjoyed it so much I went back again three weeks later and still felt the exact same way. It's an absolute adrenaline rush to feel afraid inside haunted houses and walk through scare zones. I walked out of the gates at the end of the night with a huge smile on my face and a night filled with fun-but-scary memories under my belt.

Stream It Or Skip It: ‘Monster Inside’ on Hulu, a Trip Inside an Extreme Haunted House and the Twisted Psyche That Built It

Monster Inside: America’s Most Extreme Haunted House is a Hulu documentary about the phenomenon of extreme haunts – haunted-house attractions designed to make participants feel as if they’re inside a real-life horror show – and one man who takes the concept too far.

MONSTER INSIDE: AMERICA’S MOST EXTREME HAUNTED HOUSE : STREAM IT OR SKIP IT?

The Gist: With the continued popularity of spooky-season haunted houses and big-budget attractions like Universal’s Haunted Horror Nights, there’s a natural appetite for more extreme experiences that go beyond the realm of movie-world boogeyman popping out from shadowy corners for a good jump-scare. The audience for these “extreme haunts” can be horror fans looking for a stronger fix or people with PTSD seeking a safely administered hit of adrenaline; whatever their motivations, Russ McKamey has become a self-styled impresario of this niche. His McKamey Manor has boasted a thousands-long waiting list, a 40-page waiver that still may not be legal, a $20,000 prize for anyone able to complete its marathon-length physical and psychological tortures, and potential viral internet fame even if you don’t. Monster Inside: America’s Most Extreme Haunted House speaks extensively to several McKamey Manor participants who talk about the genuine danger this cultish project poses.

What Movies Will It Remind You Of?: Though it’s a documentary, Monster Inside clearly wants to evoke classic horror films as a way of getting its viewers on the wavelength of people who might like to see how they fare inside of one (there are extremely brief clips from Texas Chain Saw Massacre , It , and others). The handheld camera work, shooting grainy footage of people in maximum discomfort, brings to mind both found-footage horror and Saw -style torture pictures. But you soon learn that McKamey is more of an internet-enabled cult leader (with the sadly predictable army of online defenders) than a classic horror villain, and the documentary has true-crime overtones. (You may have seen either Dark Tourist on Netflix or Haunters: The Art Of The Scare at some point over the years, both of which tackle the McKamey Manor controversy in their own ways.)

Performance Worth Watching: Those who speak out against McKamey on camera are obviously the most empathetic figures on screen, but it’s McKamey himself, often shown in selfie close-ups via his own footage, looking like a malevolent version of character actor Noah Emmerich, who’s the memorable figure here, in large part because his specific motivations and psychology remain a mystery (even as his power-trip intentions become clearer).

Memorable Dialogue: “One of the things I did was I started giving away body parts. I gave my kidney away. I was signed up to give a piece of my liver away. I also signed up for the bone-marrow transplant list. I was going to give away as much as I could,” says Brandon, an Iraq War vet discussing the PTSD and survivor’s guilt that led him to seek out extreme haunts.

Sex and Skin: It’s implied that the desire to participate in these experiences has a potential component of kink to it; late-movie footage from a more ethical “extreme haunt” (one that actually pays attention to safe words and the like) includes a masked topless woman.

Our Take: The story of Monster Inside is compelling, but also elusive. It sets up McKamey Manor as both an escalation of immersive horror experiences and an ultra-extreme version of a homemade (and unregulated) backyard haunted house – a bizarre but potent mix that goes a long way toward explaining why it attracts so much attention despite a litany of safety issues. But while the documentary’s participants express themselves clearly when explaining why they signed up for the McKamey challenge and how they wound up feeling genuinely scarred by it, the documentary itself doesn’t always provide similar clarity on the details. Despite a seeming wealth of footage (McKamey himself seems to shoot every individual multi-hour “tour”), the film remains fuzzy on plenty of naturally occurring questions: What was the process of gaining entry to McKamey Manor like, physically and practically? Why does so much of the “tour” footage seem to take place in a yard or a cellar, rather than the elaborate haunted house McKamey is later seen dismantling? Where does all this footage end up? McKamey doesn’t charge his participants money, but does he monetize the online videos in some way? Do participants ever complain that the haunt veers so far away from horror, given that much of it plays more like extreme survival challenges?

Even simpler matters like timeline – when did McKamey’s Manor start in its original location, how long did it last before being forced to move, and so on – are left vague, suggesting that the filmmakers either couldn’t find a way to weave more information into the narrative, or were more interested in first-person accounts than in background research. When the movie shows a more ethical version of an extreme haunt towards its end, presumably to illustrate that these kinds of experiences can be pursued without the power games and carelessness exhibited by McKamey, it doesn’t even bother to explain what this safer iteration of horror role-play actually is or where it can be found. (It almost seems staged, but the movie insists upfront that it contains no re-enactments.) The intent may have been to let the voices of McKamey’s victims drive the story, and indeed, the movie is most interesting when they explain the psychological torture they were subjected to. But with so much left unclear, the filmmakers also place an undue burden on their subjects, and leave their viewers fascinated while also wandering in the dark.

Our Call: For anyone still considering a trip to McKamey Manor – which, amazingly, still seems to be in some form of operation today – this is a must-see, as a warning and also a reassurance that these kinds of extreme thrills can be provided elsewhere, by people who are probably not sociopaths. But viewers looking for a clearly laid-out and thought-provoking documentary might still SKIP IT.

haunted horror nights 2023 houses

Looking for a truly terrifying experience this Halloween? McKamey Manor in Summertown touts itself as a haunted house like no other.

If you are ready to live a horror film, you may be ready for McKamey Manor . The horror experience is only for those 21 years and older, and that is just the base of maybe being able to head into this frightful experience. There's also a screening process to be able to participate.

McKamey Manor is touted as a horror experience like no other and is not for the faint of heart...or anyone with a heart condition.

Do you have what it takes to just even get to the Manor ?

What is McKamey Manor?

McKamey Manor takes a person into a real-life horror film.

Originally based in California, Russ McKamey moved his shop of horrors to Summertown in 2017 and has come up with new ways to scare those who dare enter and also gain some criticism over the years.

From witches to bloody battles: Haunted spots in Tennessee perfect for ghost hunting

In previous interviews , McKamey called his extreme haunt "a game" and a "survival horror boot camp experience" that can last more than 10 hours at places around Summertown, Tennessee, and Huntsville, Alabama.

McKamey also offers up a nice prize for those that "beat the manor". If anyone has the tenacity to persevere and make it through the whole event could win a $20,000 prize. But no one has made it yet.

Where is McKamey Manor?

McKamey Manor is located in Summerton, Tennessee, just about an hour south of Nashville.

What does it take to participate in McKamey Manor?

Want to participate in McKamey Manor? There are a couple of things you have to do before you can even get in the door.

  •  You must be 21 and above, or 18-20 with parental approval.
  • Complete a "sports physical" and have a doctor's letter stating you are physically and mentally cleared.
  • Pass a background check provided by MM.
  • Be screened via Facepook face time or phone.
  • Have proof of medical insurance.
  • Sign a detailed 40-page waiver.
  • Pass a portable drug test on the day of the show.

People who pass an initial screening and complete an on-site 40-page waiver must then endure a night-time series of what McKamey calls "epic stunts." Events can include having your eyes covered with duct tape, being submerged in water, buried in mud or being hypnotized.

Is McKamey Manor safe?

Don't forget about that hefty waiver you have to sign.

McKamey stated the manor's safe but can be dangerous.

YouTube videos taken of participants show them being covered in mud, dealing with heights, water and a whole mess of other critters and don't forget about the psychological aspect of participating ins something like this.

Hulu documentary on McKamey Manor: Monster Inside: America's Most Extreme Haunted House

McKamey's perchance for extreme horror has even caught the eye of Hulu .

On Oct. 12, the streaming service will air a documentary on McKamey Manor and the mastermind behind the extreme haunted house called Monster Inside: America's Most Extreme Haunted House .

The documentary's synopsis states the documentary follows McKamey and his horror ways, but it also looks at allegations of being a "manipulative abuser" by three people.

9 When To Buy An HHN Ticket

In short, the sooner visitors purchase their tickets, the better, as the tickets continue to increase in price as the month of October progresses and Halloween draws nearer.

Guests can buy HHN tickets on the Universal Studios website .

The park sometimes offers an after-11 PM Universal Express ticket for $79 (Although this is not guaranteed).

8 The Best Time To Go To Halloween Horror Nights

Contrary to popular belief, the best time to visit HHN is early to mid-October. It's also best to avoid the opening night as everyone wants to be the first to experience the attraction, resulting in a chaotic and rushed experience.

The Best Days To Go (Least Expensive)

  • Sunday nights.
  • Wednesday nights.
  • Thursday nights.

7 This Is What To Expect At Halloween Horror Nights

Halloween-goers are greeted with mystery, mazes, marvels, the most extreme haunted houses for 2023 , and more at HHN. There are special areas, each dedicated to giving visitors the fright of their lives. The scares are unexpected and chaotic and strive to spike adrenalin levels to the max.

Things People Entering The Mazes Will Experience:

  • Scary sounds, special effects, wailing, screaming, cackling, and generally weird sounds.
  • There's plenty of fake blood... Everywhere.
  • Real people will jump, sneak up to, and shadow participants trying to get through each maze.

6 This Is What To Bring To HHN

Some may have been to haunted horror events in the past or celebrated Halloween around the world at not-so-spooky destinations , but nothing quite compares to the intensity of HHN. That being said, there's a reason why it's still so popular every year.

A Few Things To Think About Bringing To HHN

  • Earplugs as the theme park gets very loud.
  • Comfortable walking shoes as there is a lot of walking between mazes.
  • The tagline of Halloween Horror Nights is “Never Go Alone.” So, bring a friend along.

5 This Is What Not To Bring To HHN

Always bear in mind that whatever is brought in has to be carried. And question: "Is it worth being snatched by a skeleton because of loose jackets, oversized puffers, and bags"?

A Few Things To Consider Leaving At Home:

  • Oversized bags/backpacks.
  • Water bottles and snacks as there are food and beverage stalls throughout the park (Who doesn't want to try ruby candied apples and blood-spurting cupcakes?).
  • Fear (the scaremongers will feed off it and make the experience even scarier). All jokes aside, going to HHN is a bucket list experience that never disappoints.

Carry a fanny pack or cross-body bag that is small and easy to maneuver.

4 Are Costumes Permitted At HHN?

Unfortunately, dressing up as a character is SO out of character for HHN. Park visitors are not allowed to change their physical appearance in any way. They are also not allowed to bring props and wear face-altering makeup.

Why Aren't Guests Allowed To Wear Costumes?

  • To help distinguish between the actors and the players.
  • To create a barrier that makes guests feel like the victim (which they are) as it makes the experience more authentic.

Medical masks are allowed, but any masks covering the entire face or masks that change a person's physical appearance are not allowed. HHN turns those who don't adhere to these rules away at the gates.

3 What Are The 2023 Haunted Houses At Halloween Horror Nights?

The HHN haunted houses have always been inspired by cinematic masterpieces, frightfully-real literary works of fiction by the most gruesome horror writers, and even modern-day events.

Each house has a theme and is decorated in an elaborate fashion that makes guests feel as though they've stepped right into the upside-down of Stranger Things . Or walked onto the set of The Last of Us. (No one has spotted Pedro in there just yet, though...)

The Houses Of 2023:

  • The Exorcist: Believer.
  • Universal Monsters: Unmasked.
  • Chucky: Ultimate Kill Count.
  • Monstruos: The Monsters of Latin America.
  • The Last of Us.
  • Stranger Things 4.
  • Holidayz in Hell.
  • Terror Tram…The Exterminatorz.

2 Are There Live Entertainment Areas?

Halloween Horror Nights are accompanied by two specific live entertainment areas that are based off two iconic horror films. It doesn't get scarier than these live entertainment areas that aim to keep hearts pumping, nerves jumping, and people running. They feature stunts, fire displays, massive explosions, behind-the-scenes tours, and light shows.

Halloween Horror Night's 2 Entertainment Areas:

  • The Purge: Dangerous Waters is taking over the Waterworld Stunt Arena and is based on The Purge movies.
  • Blumhouse: Behind the Screams takes inspiration from Blumhouse, Five Nights at Freddy’s, The Exorcist, M3GAN, and The Black Phone .

1 What Are The HHN Scare Zones?

The HHN scare zones were created as an additional bone-chilling experience, making it more unique than other destinations for Halloween lovers on the West Coast . Guests enter the scare zones and are scared by park actors who take the word "fear" and show guests exactly what it means. The scare zones aren't for everyone, but they're a HHN tradition... And the perfect end to a thrilling experience.

The scare zones feature chainsaw-wielding ghosts, creepy children, and blood-soaked hordes, just to name a few.

The 3 HHN Scare Zones:

  • El Terror de las Momias

Halloween Horror Nights keeps people guessing, questioning, and fearing what's real and what's fake to the point where they're so deep in a maze of constructed realities that they believe they're in a horror film themselves. Nights have never felt more haunted than at HNN.
