Katherine "Katie" Harwood is a fictional character in the 2002 film Ghost Ship where an innocent young girl goes on a sea voyage of a lifetime, only to be caught up in a living nightmare aboard the ill-fated ocean liner. In the film, Katie is the supporting deuteragonist to the main character (Maureen Epps) and stands in stark contrast to the completely evil and demonic antagonist (Jack Ferriman). In many regards, Katie is just as much of a heroine as Maureen Epps for enduring unfathomable suffering and risking the wrath of Jack Ferriman through her unyielding efforts to save the souls and lives of others on the ship. Katie is an iconic representation of childhood from an earlier era, at a time when life was simpler, and childhood more innocent. [2] [3]

Synopsis [ edit | edit source ]

In May of 1962, an endearing Katie waves goodbye to her grandparents in Europe and journeys solo aboard the exquisite Antonia Graza on an exclusive cruise to rejoin her family in New York City. Since Katie is the only child onboard, she receives special care and attention. In describing her voyage Katie states, ”The whole ship was my playground. I was the only child onboard, but the ship’s purser and captain took special care of me. I felt so safe and happy with them.” [4]

However, after the Antonia Graza rescues a lone survivor and cargo from a sinking ship, Katie’s exciting journey suddenly takes a horrendous turn for the worse. Unbeknownst to Katie and her shipmates, the single survivor (Jack Ferriman) is literally a demonic henchman for Satan set on destroying lives and collecting souls. Ferriman informs select members of the crew about the millions in gold recovered from his sinking ship, and influences them to launch an elaborate plot to seize control of the Graza and the gold, by killing everyone onboard. Although several crewmembers and passengers try to save her life from the murderous conspirators, Katie is eventually caught and tragically hanged to death, with her body concealed behind the partitioning door of her cabin. [5]

Instead of ascending to her rightful place in heaven, Katie’s spirit is trapped on the ship by demonic forces along with the entire compliment of murdered passengers and crew. However, since Katie is still a young child, her soul is completely innocent and therefore beyond the influence and control of the demonic Ferriman. Over the next 40 years, the evil Ferriman along with the help of the wicked “marked” souls, try to use the ship as a trap to destroy unsuspecting lives, and collect a quota of souls for hell. Despite being the only flicker of good on the ship, Katie bravely opposes Ferriman and the evil spirits, and attempts to warn and save the lives of anyone who has the misfortune of being lured aboard the condemned vessel. Concerning these things, Katie says, “He can’t control me like he does the others and because of this Jack hates me most of all – Always terrorizing me and frightening me away when I try to warn those who come here.” [6]

When Maureen Epps and her ship salving crew are lured aboard the Graza by Ferriman, Katie attempts to warn them about the dangerous ship. Katie has very perceptive eyes, and finds Epps to be more open to the truth than her cohorts. Katie tries to leave Epps messages and clues, and even appears to her on several occasions. When Katie senses that Ferriman has sabotaged the salvage crew’s tugboat, she boldly tries to warn the crew, but is forcibly carried away by Ferriman. Epps witnesses Katie’s warning and sets off in search for the mysterious girl.

Epps locates Katie’s cabin and comes face to face with her remains and her spirit. Katie allows Epps to have her cherished heart-shaped locket, and then proceeds to speak directly about the ship being a demonic trap. However, before Katie can finish explaining, she is overheard by an invisible Ferriman and lets out a frightened scream as he removes her from the cabin. Undeterred, Katie returns and tries to help Epps and her remaining crewmembers escape. Endowed with supernatural power from above, Katie transports Epps back to May 21, 1962 through her memories and reveals to her the horrifying events that led to everyone’s death, including her own. Furthermore, Katie reveals the true identity of Jack Ferriman and his goal to use the ship as a conduit to collect souls for Satan. [7]

After experiencing Katie’s heartbreaking vision, Epps decides to risk almost certain death by destroying the cursed ship with explosives. However, Katie helps Epps escape the rapidly sinking vessel, while emancipated souls rise from the ship. Katie stays faithfully by Epps and gives her a grateful smile as her spirit ascends toward heaven. [8]

Religious & Symbolic Implications [ edit | edit source ]

At its core, the story is deeply religious and the plot hinges on the concept of a young girl trying to save the lives (and ultimately souls) of others from demonic forces. [9]

Metaphorical Murals [ edit | edit source ]

The religious implications and Christian symbolism surrounding Katie’s story are rich. [10] Although only lightly touched on in the final version of the film, the most obvious religious connections come through the Gustave Dore inspired murals displayed throughout the ship. The murals are depictions based on Dante Alighieri’s Divine Comedy and The Inferno. The metaphorical murals hint at the struggle between Katie and Ferriman over the lives and souls on the ship. [11] Lead actress Julianna Margulies says, “Katie is like Virgil in Dante’s Inferno. Margulies explains that Katie is like a “little guide” trying to lead others through hell and then safely onto the other side. [12] As in the mural, Ferriman is literally a “ferry man” using a boat in the attempt to ferry souls to hell and eternal damnation. Conversely, Katie opposes Ferriman by trying to protect and warn all unsuspecting visitors and sharing the truth about the demonic ship.

Marked Souls [ edit | edit source ]

An additional concept presented in the plot are the “marked” souls. Like the murals in the story, the souls of the sinful and the “lost” [13] are marked with a hooked-shaped indention on their hand. Katie says the mark is “a sign of their sins” and that they are bound to the will of Satan and his demons, in addition to eventually sharing in their same flaming judgment. [14] However, not all the murals are somber. The depiction of angels defeating the demons and casting them down foreshadows the eventual defeat of Ferriman and ultimately all evil. [15]

The Dove and Locket [ edit | edit source ]

Another subtle, but implicit Christian symbolism is Katie’s heart-shaped locket with the image of a raised dove in flight. [16] In Christian tradition, this type of dove can symbolize innocence, purity, faith, hope, God’s peace, God’s presence through the Holy Spirit and God’s guidance and deliverance. [17] The dove also indicated God’s bestowal of fortitude necessary to bear suffering and death [18] . In this sense, the remains of the dead dove on the bridge of the ship, foreshadows Katie’s death, but at the same time indicates that there could still be hope. When Epps puts on Katie’s locket, it implies that Epps now has a renewed heart, or possibly even salvation as stated in Bible scripture. In this manner, the locket could also represent that Epps’ soul is not "marked". [19]

Parallel of an Innocent and Sacrificial Life [ edit | edit source ]

A striking parallel could also be drawn between Katie and Jesus Christ. In the bible, Christ lives a completely innocent life, but is hung on a cross to sacrificially die for the sins of all humanity. [20] Christ tastes the sting of death and hell in order to offer salvation to all who will put their faith in Him. [21] Similarly, innocent Katie is hung by a rope behind a dividing door, but through her death she is able to lead others to "salvation" and safety. Because of her young age and innocent death, Katie is the only voice of hope for all the suppressed souls held captive on the demonic ship. Katie also endures small tastes of hell from Ferriman in her efforts to save others. However, Katie’s love and compassion for the lives of others is greater than her fear and pain, and in similarity to Christ, Katie rises victoriously to heaven in the end. [22]

Forty Years and the Promised Land [ edit | edit source ]

40 years is a significant reoccurring number in the Christian faith. [23] The Israelites endured 40 years of great trial and testing in the wilderness before they were able to enter their promised land of rest. In Christian tradition, the earthly life is often compared to a time of trial in the wilderness and the Promised Land a metaphor for heaven. [24] Correspondingly, Katie has endured the “wilderness” and trials of the ship for 40 years, but as the result of Epps’ help she is inevitably freed to enter the “promised land” of heaven.

Concept of Free Will [ edit | edit source ]

Free will is both discussed and demonstrated in the story. [25] Ultimately, the crew members that die are led to destruction by their own sins and their selfish desire for greed, lust and power. Epps is spared the fate of her shipmates through listening to Katie’s warnings and humbly responding to the truth. [26]

Elevated Status of Children [ edit | edit source ]

In the Christian bible God often uses the most humble and unlikely people to work through [27] – Out of hundreds on the ship, Katie is the meekest, humblest and most unlikely to do anything significant, yet every soul on the ship ends up depending on her. [28]

Katie is also reminiscent of Christ elevating the status of children when he gave them special attention and profoundly declared that unless one humbles them self and has the faith of a little child, they will not enter the kingdom of heaven. This is further illustrated when Christ took a lowly child and placed him in the midst of his followers and stated that only those with childlike faith will be the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. [29] This concept is demonstrated by Epps' willingness to humble herself to Katie's level. [30]

The role of children in Christian scripture – Comparisons could be made between Katie and several unpretentious bible characters such as the lowly shepherd boy David who defeated the warrior Goliath and became king. Outwardly both young Katie and David appear to be nothing more that mere children, however, inwardly they possess vast unforeseen potential and a tremendous strength of character. [31] [32]

In the film, as with Christian soteriology there are two clear eternal destinations which souls go to after death; ether heaven or hell. A heart of child-like faith will put one on the path to heaven, but a sinful life eventually leads to destruction. [33]

The Destructiveness of Sinful Choices [ edit | edit source ]

One of the morals of the story is the corrupting dangers of pursuing riches. This theme also fits aptly within the religious concepts of the film. [34] Sinful greed, lust, debauchery and selfish desire can influence ordinarily good people to do horribly evil things (1Timothy 6:9-10). [35] The choices made by the characters in the story illustrate this principle.

“Be sure your sins will find you out” – As the story goes, sinful activities have consequences and will eventually have to be accounted for, and the ultimate payment for sin in the end is both physical and spiritual death (Romans 6:20-23). [36] [37]

“Greater love has no one than this – To lay one’s life down for their friends.” Katie and Epps are both willing put themselves at risk to save lives. Through the process of trying to help others both Epps and Katie experience help for themselves. [38]

“Those who seek to save their life will lose it, but those who are willing to loose their life will save it.” [39] In this sense Epps' life is saved, because she places the needs of others first. Katie also inherits eternal life in heaven by risking herself to help others.

The concept of purgatory (Whalen p. 1034-1039) [40] is also mentioned when Katie states that the ship had become like a “prison” where souls are trapped among the living between heaven and hell. [41]

Additional Symbolism [ edit | edit source ]

Life as a voyage on a ship [ edit | edit source ].

Life itself is comparable to a voyage on ship...illustrating that our lives are like a ship that is bound for one of two possible destinations. [42] In the context of Ghost Ship, the voyage ends in destruction (death and hell) unless we get off. In this sense, Katie pleads with us to get off, but that involves humbly changing our ways and giving up the allure and pursuit of vain things such as wealth and power. [43]

Symbols of Changing Times [ edit | edit source ]

The once elegant and decaying ship is a symbol of changing times. [44] In a similar manner, Katie can be viewed as a symbolic representation of childhood from a more innocent era. Just as the ship decays to ruin from its glorious 1950’s splendor, Katie’s deteriorating childhood possessions and even Katie herself, are evocative symbols of changing times and eroding childhood innocence. [45]

Dichotomy and Contrasts [ edit | edit source ]

Katie is in some ways a complicated paradox: She has been deeply hurt and traumatized by all she has experienced, but by the same token, she is still very much an innocent child – Even after 40 years of resilient growth as a character. Katie exhibits a wide array of emotions from timid youthful innocence and joy, to extreme terror, sadness, loneliness, and solemn distress. [46]

Even under tremendously trying circumstances Katie demonstrates an incredible inner strength of character without compromising the sweet kind-hearted "girly" girl she really is. The fact that Katie remains true to herself in spite of all the evil and suffering she experienced transcends their eroding influence and distinguishes her from the other characters. [47]

Ferriman [ edit | edit source ]

Ferriman is representative of Satan and the crafty deceptiveness of evil in destroying people’s lives. Katie and Ferriman are at completely opposite ends of the Christian spectrum – The demonic Ferriman is totally depraved and evil while Katie is sweet and innocent. Katie is motivated by love and compassion, Ferriman is motivated by hate and rage. [48] [49]

Epps [ edit | edit source ]

Although Katie and Epps are two completely dissimilar characters from different eras, they still grow quite close. Epps is "a woman working in a man's world" [50] and appears somewhat tough and masculine on the exterior like a tomboy. Although not specifically stated, the story indicates that Epps is likely from a broken home. On the other hand, Katie comes from a close, traditional nuclear family. In contrast to Epps, Katie is more of a typical "girly" girl and is slightly timid, but possess a stout inner fortitude despite her diminutive and delicate appearance. [51]

Francesca [ edit | edit source ]

The sultry Francesca lives the more representative life of a performing artist. Unlike Epps who feels the need to downplay her femininity, Francesca leans toward the other extreme and attempts to flaunt her femininity to her own advantage, even to the point of her own exploitation. Conversely, Katie is still a virtuous and modest young girl, who has yet to be tainted by any corrupting influences of the world. [52]

Captain Murphy [ edit | edit source ]

Captain Murphy appears to be a strong imposing ship captain on the outside, however, when confronted with trials and tribulations, his perceived strength is shown to be superficial. This is evident by his emotional breakdown where he shuts off emotionally and withdraws to himself while attempting to drown his problems in alcohol. In contrast, Katie appears to be very delicate in both physical appearance and personality. However, despite her dainty appearance, Katie proves her true strength and fortitude from within through dealing with her pain and problems directly. [53]

Light vs. darkness, good vs. evil, childhood innocence vs. wickedness, tragedy vs. triumph, simpler more wholesome times, vs. the complexity and loss of innocence of today. [54]

On the surface, Katie’s story is an emotional tale of heartache and tragedy – Something that no young person should ever have to endure. However, Katie’s story is also essential to the plot. [55] Through helping each other and being willing to put themselves at risk, Katie and Epps together achieve a triumph out of the tragedy and deliver a major blow to Ferriman and the forces of evil. Although the struggle over the souls of people will continue, this victory of the human spirit gives hope even in the face of terrible suffering, evil and even death. [56]

“Katie is really a very sweet girl. She's completely innocent…“ says Emily Jane Browning, who obviously became completely immersed in her character. “…She's been hoping someone would come onto the ship to be her friend, so when Epps arrives she's very excited – they develop a real friendship." [57]

”Emily did an amazing job,” Director Steve Beck enthuses. “She gave Katie a real complexity…she's not just a little girl caught up in a ghost story…” Both Browning and Beck also added that underneath all her heartfelt emotions, Katie longs for vindication and justice. [58]

The deeply symbolic and metaphorical aspects surrounding Katie’s story along with the close relationships she develops with others lends support to the notion that the film was originally intended to be more than just another Hollywood “slasher” horror. This is further substantiated by Katie’s tearful and heartfelt story – Emotionally poignant and touching drama not usually found in a horror picture. [59]

Ghost Ship Ending, Explained

A Steve Beck (‘Thirteen Ghosts’) directorial venture, the 2002 film ‘Ghost Ship,’ is an interesting combination of horror and ocean adventure . Released in the pre-‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ world, the film can be very well credited for establishing the subgenre. Upon its release, it received mixed reviews from the critics, with a few praising the film’s visual style and urgency in the storyline. It tells the tale of a salvage crew, led by Sean Murphy (Gabriel Byrne), who learns about a drifting ocean liner from a weather service pilot named Jack Ferriman. After they get on board the ship, they all begin experiencing supernatural events, leading them to believe that the ship is haunted. SPOILERS AHEAD!

Ghost Ship Plot Synopsis

The film opens in 1962 onboard the ocean liner SS Antonia Graza. A lounge singer named Francesca (Francesca Rettondini) performs ‘Senza Fine’ while the crew and the passengers dance with each other. Katie (Emily Browning), a young girl traveling to New York to be with her family, begins dancing with the captain himself. Someone triggers a thin wire cord to break and pull across the dance floor at an incredible speed, severing limbs and other body parts of all who are present, except for Katie. She survives because she isn’t tall enough.

In the present time, Murphy and his crew are extremely competent at their job. The moment they step on to the Graza, odd and bizarre things start happening around them. The film’s cast also includes Ron Eldard as Dodge, Desmond Harrington as Jack Ferriman, Isaiah Washington as Greer, Alex Dimitriades as Santos, Karl Urban as Munder, and Julianna Margulies as Maureen Epps. Their initial plan is to tow the seemingly deserted ocean-liner and deliver it to a scrapyard, where it can be taken apart for profit. Munder nearly dies when the floor underneath him gives in but is saved by Maureen. This is when she first sees Katie.

She and Ferriman find nine wooden boxes, each of which contains twenty-eight 100-oz gold bars. The crew decides to leave the ship and take just the gold with them. But as they are about to leave, some malevolent force causes a huge explosion in the salvager’s tugboat, the Arctic Warrior, completely destroying it and killing Santos. The crew realizes that they now have no choice but to repair the ocean liner. As their stay on the eponymous ship is prolonged, Murphy and others start having supernatural experiences.

Ghost Ship Ending

Among the remaining salvagers, Greer is killed first. Francesca’s ghost appears before him. He tries to stay faithful to his fiancée but fails. She lures him to an empty elevator shaft. As he lunges to grab hold of her, he goes through her ghostly form and falls down the shaft and is impaled on the steel wires at the bottom. Troubled by Santos’ death, Murphy starts drinking in the captain’s cabin. The captain’s ghost appears before him and tells him what transpired on his ship.

They had rescued a single person from the sinking cruise ship the Lorelei, along with the gold. He then proceeds to give a photo of the survivor. As Murphy goes to inform Maureen and others, he begins hallucinating about Santos. When Maureen arrives there, he attacks her, believing her to be Santos. He is then subdued by Ferriman. They, with the help of Munder and Dodge, place Murphy in an empty fish tank.

Who Is Jack Ferriman?

It is Katie who ultimately reveals the complete truth to Maureen. She helps her find Greer’s body and tells her what happened on the ship. The sole survivor from the Lorelei manipulated a section of Graza’s crew to kill the rest of the crew, as well as the passengers. Their leader then gunned down his own men, and in turn, was shot by Francesca. It is then revealed that Jack Ferriman was behind all this. After he killed Francesca with telekinesis, he branded her with a unique hooked-shaped mark, which helps him control the souls.

Katie, being an innocent child at the time of her death, couldn’t be marked and has more independence and agency. Maureen runs to find Murphy but discovers the tank flooded and him dead. She finds Dodge and tries to explain that Ferriman came after them, so they can repair the ship for him, but Ferriman shows up there as well. She tells them to stay together as she goes to search for Munder and gives Dodge the shotgun, indicating that he should keep an eye on Ferriman. Munder dies by being sucked into the ship’s gear.

When Ferriman tries to mock Dodge for his unspoken feelings for Maureen, Dodge shoots him. He later approaches Maureen while she is placing explosives all over the ship. He informs her that he has killed Ferriman and says that they should use the gold to start a life together. Seeing right through the ruse, Maureen asks him why he hasn’t enquired about Munder. Dodge transforms into Ferriman and reveals that Dodge is dead, and he knows that Munder is as well. Interestingly, his surname gives a clue to what he truly is.

As he explains to Maureen, after a lifetime of sin, he became a salvager of souls. He has a quota to fill and uses Graza to gather the souls. This is why he needed Maureen and others’ help. After they had fixed the ship, he could have continued harvesting souls. He and Maureen struggle before she detonates the explosives, seemingly destroying the demonic being. She then swims away from the sinking Graza with Katie’s help. Katie and others are finally free to advance to the afterlife.

How Is Ferriman Still Alive?

Maureen is picked up by a passing cruise ship. After she gets back to the land and wheeled into an ambulance, she spots some crew members taking the crates of gold onboard the cruise ship and Ferriman accompanying them. As she screams in horror, the film ends. It has already been established in the film that Ferriman is an immortal being. A gunshot from Dodge didn’t kill him, and evidently, neither did the explosion. His superiors, or “the management” as he calls them, likely have sent him back to Earth to harvest more souls for them.

You'll Barely Recognize Katie From Ghost Ship Today

The 2002 movie "Ghost Ship" has mostly passed from human memory, except for one sequence. The film's opening, which explains how the titular ship got its ghosts, remains a beloved set piece among horror aficionados. One night during a transpacific voyage, a piano wire comes loose on the SS Antonia Graza. It whips through the ship, bisecting an entire dance floor of passengers, as well as the captain. Only the petite child Katie is left standing, because she is shorter than the wire which cleaved everyone else in twain. Bloody Disgusting ranked the opening of "Ghost Ship" among its Top 13 Kills in Horror Movie History, and Coming Soon labeled it one of the greatest openings in horror history.

The rest of the movie is, frankly, kind of anticlimactic. Nothing can beat the intensity of that opening. A salvage crew discovers the SS Antonia Graza in the Bering Sea, and find that it's full of gold. The crew is manipulated by the souls trapped on the ship (Katie included), and are lured to their deaths. Deaths that lack the oomph of the opening sequence. But little Katie's career has flourished since she was finally freed from that ghost ship. Emily Browning has worked steadily since "Ghost Ship ," even finding time to still play the dead.

Emily Browning's unfortunate big break

After her performance in "Ghost Ship ," Emily Browning starred in the big screen adaptation of "Lemony Snicket's a Series of Unfortunate Events." Browning played Violet Baudelaire, eldest Baudelaire child and amateur inventor. After their parents are killed in a mysterious fire, the Baudelaires flit from foster home to foster home. They are pursued by the villainous Count Olaf, played by Jim Carrey under a metric ton of facial prosthesis. The film also stars Meryl Streep, Liam Aiken, Jude Law, Billy Connolly, and Catherine O'Hara.

"A Series of Unfortunate Events" was mostly well received, with Roger Ebert hoping an even better sequel would appear. None ever came, but Browning kept working. After "Lemony Snicket ," she starred in "The Uninvited ," an adaptation of the South Korean horror classic "A Tale of Two Sisters ." She also starred in Zack Snyder's "Sucker Punch" as Baby Doll. Browning leads the gals of "Sucker Punch" as they explore dreams and get lobotomies, or whatever actually happens in that movie.

Back from the dead on American Gods

Though Browning hasn't appeared in a feature film since 2017 , she has been back at her old gig of playing dead folks on "American Gods ." She plays Laura Moon on the show, the late wife of lead demigod Shadow Moon (Ricky Whittle). Laura starts the show off dead, killed in a car crash right before her husband's release from prison. But in a world where ancient gods walk among us, death isn't exactly final. 

"American Gods" was canceled after 3 seasons, but not before Laura died yet again . Ironically, this was done to give the character more development. Neil Gaiman, who wrote the book the Starz series was based on, explained to Screen Rant why Laura had to die again. "One of the things that we wanted to do with her in season three was kill her, and kill her again, right at the beginning. And this time, kill her and let her grow," he said. "We get to follow Laura Moon into the afterlife of Laura Moon this time. She was offered a trip into the afterlife in season one, and she turned it down. This time, she's accepting it." 

Laura's journey may have ended with the show's cancelation, but rumors of a wrap-up movie are still circulating. Maybe she'll come back from the dead one last time. 

Katie Harwood

Katherine "Katie" Harwood is a fictitious character in the 2002 film Ghost Ship where an innocent young girl goes on a sea voyage of a lifetime, only to be caught up in a living nightmare aboard the ill-fated ocean liner. In the film, Katie is the supporting deuteragonist to the main character, (Maureen Epps) and stands in stark contrast to the completely evil and demonic antagonist, (Jack Ferriman). In May 1962, dozens of wealthy passengers are dancing in the ballroom and upon the deck of the Italian ocean liner, Antonia Graza , while an Italian woman, Francesca, sings "Senza Fine". On the deck, a young girl, Katie Harwood, is sitting alone, until the ship's captain offers to dance with her. Elsewhere, Archies hand presses a lever that unravels a thin wire cord from a spool. The spool snaps and the wire slices across the dance floor, bisecting the dancers. Katie is spared due to her height.

The massacre at the Antonia Graza

Forty years later, a boat salvage crew: Captain Sean Murphy, Maureen Epps, Greer, Dodge, Munder and Santos are celebrating a success at a bar when Jack Ferriman, a Canadian weather service pilot, approaches them and says he spotted a vessel running adrift in the Bering Sea. Because the ship is in international waters, it can be claimed by whoever brings it to port. The crew sets out on the Arctic Warrior , an ocean salvage tugboat. They discover the ship is the Antonia Graza , which was believed to be lost at sea. When they prepare to tow it, they discover it contains a large quantity of gold. Strange things begin to happen. Epps claims to have seen a little girl on the stairwell, Dodge finds a digital watch on the bridge and Greer claims to have woman singing and seducing him throughout the ship. Epps and Ferriman discover the corpses of another salvage crew. They decide to leave the ship but take the gold, but an invisible force opens a gas valve in the engine room and the Arctic Warrior explodes as the engine is started, killing Santos and leaving the others stranded. They attempt to repair the Antonia Graza and sail it back to land. Greer encounters Francesca, the singer he heard, who seduces him and then leads him off a precipice to his death. Captain Murphy, after entering the captain's cabin, finds the ghost of the Antonia Graza's Captain, who explains that they recovered the gold from a sinking cruiseship, Lorelei , along with a sole survivor. He shows Murphy a picture of the survivor, who he recognizes. He rushes to tell the rest of the crew, but a supernatural force causes him to see everyone he meets as the burned ghost of Santos, causing the crew to think he has gone mad and lock him in the drained fish tank.

Epps meets Katie, who reveals what happened on the Graza ; the sole survivor of the Lorelei convinced the crew of the Graza to murder the passengers in order to claim the gold for themselves. One of the ship's officers turned on the rest of the crew and killed them all only to be killed himself by Francesca. Another man then joined Francesca in an embrace and walked away as a large hook swung into her face, killing her. The man is revealed as Jack Ferriman, who is actually a demonic spirit who masterminded the massacre.

Epps then rushes to Murphy, only to find him drowned in the now-flooded fish tank. Although devastated, she deduces that Ferriman lured the salvage team to the Graza to repair the sinking ship, and that the best way to fight him is to sink it. Epps rushes to the bridge to tell Dodge they must leave but Ferriman shows up before she can mention him. When Epps sets off to find Munder, Ferriman starts questioning Dodge about his feelings for her. Dodge grows suspicious and unnerved, leading him to shoot Ferriman, who appears dead but looks up when Dodge leaves. Down below, Munder is crushed between two gears while fixing a blocked pump. After seeing his remains, Epps sets explosives, just as Dodge shows up saying they should take the gold and run. Epps refuses, then suspiciously questions Dodge, who laughs and morphs into the demonic Ferriman (revealing the former's fate). Ferriman describes himself as a salvager of souls; a job he says he earned by a lifetime of sin. He explains that since Katie was a child and never committed a true sin, he cannot control her as he does the evil ghosts. So long as the Antonia Graza remains afloat he can use it as a trap and keep "management" satisfied. Epps detonates the explosives and sinks the Graza . Katie helps Epps escape the sinking ship. She is left in the debris as the souls trapped on the ship ascend to heaven.

Drifting on the open sea, Epps is found by a cruise ship and returned to land. As she is loaded into an ambulance, she sees the battered crates of gold being loaded onto the cruise ship, followed by Ferriman. He glares at Epps and carries on; she cries out as the ambulance doors close.

The film first appeared in January 2002, as a spec script called Chimera by Mark Hanlon. Originally, the film, as written, was a relatively bloodless psychological thriller as opposed to a more blatantly supernaturally-themed film. Most notably, much of the film's gore is absent from the screenplay. The film would have focused on four salvage crew members who end up stranded aboard the ghost vessel they are scuttling (the titular Chimera ); over the course of one night, each member - whether it be from panic, cabin fever, or supernatural forces - goes insane and plots to kill the other three members of the crew.

In the above-mentioned script, Murphy is the "main killer" and the ship sinks as it runs on the rocks. Murphy and Epps survive till the end but while the ship is sinking Murphy runs to take gold ingots. The weight and also the lost time bring death to Murphy. Like in the final version, Katie helps Epps to escape. Over time, the script underwent rewrites, and the psychological aspects of the script were all jettisoned in favor of making the film a slasher. It has been suggested that "The cast signed on based on this (original) draft ... and were sadly disappointed to find the script had been radically changed by Joel Silver and associates when they arrived to begin shooting."

With a reported budget of $20 million, the film opened to #3 at the box office with only a little more than $11,503,423 in ticket sales as Jackass: The Movie dominated the cinema releases. The film grossed $30,113,491 in North America and had an international gross of $38,236,393, earning a total of $68,349,884.

Critical response [ ]

The film received mainly negative reviews on its theatrical release. Review aggregate website, Rotten Tomatoes, rates the film at 14% based on 124 reviews. The consensus states that "With a plot as creaky as the boat, Ghost Ship fails to deliver the scares". Similarly, Metacritic gives the film a score of 28/100 based on 25 reviews and rates the film as "generally unfavorable".

Roger Ebert stated "It's better than you expect but not as good as you hope." Website Bloody Disgusting listed Ghost Ship 's opening massacre as #13 in their list of "The Top 13 Kills in Horror Movie History". The film has since garnered somewhat of a cult following, with many fans especially praising the soundtrack and the flashback scene which depicts how the original crew killed the passengers.

Ghost Ship ‘s opening scene portrays how most passengers in the titular ship died when a wire jerked across the ship’s dance floor and bisected all passengers and crew present at the venue. Katie was the only one who survived the incident because she was shorter than the wire’s height. Throughout Ghost Ship , Epps is the only one who pays close attention to Katie’s hints before realizing she wants them to escape before it is too late. Epps almost loses her entire crew and barely manages to leave its premises. However, in the nick of time, she breaks free from Ferriman’s wrath with Katie’s assistance and escapes.

Where Does Katie Go After Helping Save Epps In Ghost Ship

In Ghost Ship ‘s ending scene, Epps realizes Ferriman lured them to the ship because he wanted them to repair it and save it from sinking. Therefore, before departing the ship, she plants explosives on its deck, hoping that destroying the ship would finally free its trapped souls. As expected, when the explosives detonate, all the innocent souls caged to the ship ascend to heaven. Katie, too, fulfills her purpose of saving someone from Ferriman and floats up to heaven in Ghost Ship ‘s closing scene, finally getting the eternal peace she deserves.

There are two films with the same name, but they are markedly different. This page is about the 2002 film directed by Steve Beck.

In May 1962, hundreds of wealthy passengers enjoy dancing in the luxurious ballroom of an Italian ocean liner, the Antonia Graza , while a beautiful Italian singer (Francesca Rettondini) performs "Senza Fine." Out of the bow of the ship, a smaller gathering of guest dance on a raised platform, when a hand presses a lever that winds up a thin wire cord from a spool. Suddenly, the spool snaps and the wire slices across the dance floor like a blade, bisecting every dancer on the floor . Things fall apart and only little Katie ( Emily Browning ) � who is dancing with the Captain � are left standing, thanks to her small stature and to the captain leaning protectively over her. She looks up at the Captain's face, which splits open at mouth level as the top of his head falls off . Katie screams at the unbelievably horrific scene as the ship disappears never to be seen again.

In the present day, a salvage crew � Captain Sean Murphy ( Gabriel Byrne ), Maureen Epps ( Julianna Margulies ), Greer ( Isaiah Washington ), Dodge ( Ron Eldard ), Munder ( Karl Urban ) and Santos (Alex Dimitriades) � is celebrating a recent success at a bar, when Jack Ferriman ( Desmond Harrington ), a Canadian weather service pilot, approaches them and says he has spotted a mysterious vessel running adrift in the Bering Sea. Because the ship is in international waters, it can be claimed by whoever is able to bring it to a port. The crew soon set out on the Arctic Warrior , their ocean salvage tugboat. While exploring the abandoned ship, they discover that it is the long-lost Antonia Graza . When they board the ship and prepare to tow it to shore, strange things begin to happen. Epps claims to have seen a little girl on the stairwell. Greer claims to have heard the singing of an unseen songstress throughout the ship. Epps and Ferriman discover the corpses of another salvage crew . They decide to leave the ship but take the large quantity of gold that they find on board . Katie tries to warn the crew that the Arctic Warrior has been sabotaged, but the tug explodes as the engine is started, killing Santos and leaving the rest stranded on the ship.

And then things start to go from bad to worse .

This movie contains examples of:

• Anachronism Stew : The traitorous crew members of the Graza use CZ 75 handguns when they massacre the ship's passengers in the flashback. However, the CZ 75 wasn't made until 1975, a full 13 years after the Graza 's disappearance.
• Anachronistic Clue : Dodge finds a digital watch on board the Antonia Graza , which has been lost since since 1962, which tells the salvage crew that they are not the first people to have been on board since the ship disappeared.
• Artistic License � History : After returning to the Arctic Warrior after an initial inspection of the Antonia Graza , Murphy explains the story of a ghost ship called the Mary Celeste , stating that during the Civil War (1861-1865) the Mary Celeste had set sail from Charleston to London with a hold full of cotton, but was later found two months later of the coast of Tripoli by fishermen, who found the ship devoid of life, and the last log entry dated fifty-nine days earlier, yet the ship had managed to sail 4500 miles across the ocean, past the Rock of Gibraltar and into the Mediterranean Sea at full sail without anyone at the helm. In reality, while the Mary Celeste is indeed known as a ghost ship, the details of Murphy's story are inaccurate: the ship had set sail from New York for Genoa on the 7th of November 1872, carrying a cargo of alcohol, and was later found, at partial sail, not full, by the crew of the Dei Gratia was about 400 miles east of the Azores Islands on the 5th of December that same year, when crew members spotted a ship adrift in the choppy seas. The last log entry was dated to the 25th November- ten days before the ship's discovery, revealing that the ship had drifted 400 miles without anyone on board as all of the ship's inhabitants, along with the lifeboat, were missing.
• Batman Gambit : Ferriman's plan hinges on people falling for their greed to complete his mission to collect souls. His plan goes awry when one of his would-be victims chooses instead to risk her life to destroy the ship once and for all over the promise of getting rich off the gold.
• Big Bad : Ferriman is responsible for all the previous deaths on the Graza , the murder of subsequent salvage crews, and is working for Hell to collect souls.
• Big "NO!" : The movie ends with this being Epps' final word when she sees that Ferriman is alive and well, and starting his plan all over again.
• Bilingual Bonus : "Senza Fine" means "Endless", which is a perfect description of Ferriman's plan.
• Bittersweet Ending : Sure, Epps may have saved all the souls onboard the Graza and survived, but Ferriman still exists - and the souls of the Arctic Warrior crew, her friends, are still under his control, carrying another load of unmarked gold bars onto the cruise ship that rescued her before her eyes just before the credits roll. Here We Go Again!
• Blood Is Squicker in Water : When Munder is killed and his body sucked into the pumps that are pumping out the ship, the water in the clear hose turns pink.
• The Chanteuse : Francesca is the typical sultry lounge singer, but on a luxury Italian cruise ship. She participates in the massacre on the ship and uses her wiles to seduce men to their deaths, and as a ghost is serving the primary villain to lure more men to their deaths.
• The Corrupter : It's Ferriman 's job to bring out the absolute worst in people, because if they commit enough sins they'll effectively damn their souls, which he can then harvest and take to Hell. He manipulates part of Antonia Graza 's crew into murdering everyone else on board so they can get their hands on all the gold he brought with him. He tries the same routine on the present-day salvage crews, but it's only Epps who takes a definite stand against his material offers at the end.
• The dance scene at the opening. That entire crowd all killed by one wire slicing through them all?! OUCH!!!
• Munder is shredded into a cloud of blood underwater after getting caught between rotating gears.
• Death by Materialism : The entire plot revolves around this as Ferriman attempts to get the cast to try and make off with the gold on the ship so that he can kill them and drag their souls to hell. He's also done it with multiple other ships and salvage crews before now.
• Death of a Child : Katie survives the razor wire murder scene, but only because she is short enough that the wire goes over her head. She is later murdered and, based on the lascivious expression of one of her killers, implied to be raped anyway by two insane crew members.
• Decoy Protagonist : Captain Murphy , who dies without any impact on the story whatsoever, whereas Epps has the more important role.
• Demon of Human Origin : Ferriman reveals himself to be one of Hell's agents, a "salvage expert" responsible for collecting new souls to bring back home and keep The Management happy. Specifically, he notes that he was given the job for a lifetime of sin, indicating that he was once human.
• Diagonal Cut : Happens in the prologue. When the cables tear through Antonia Graza's deckside party, dismembering everyone on the dance floor, most cuts are horizontal as the victims are standing. The captain, who was dancing with Katie, bent down in an odd pose to protect her and, after a few seconds of delay to look around at the carnage, she watches the cut form across his head.
• Dramatic Drop : Murphy drops the glass of whisky he is holding when his reflection in the mirror briefly changes to that of the captain of the Antonia Graza .
• Dwindling Party : In typical slasher fashion, the cast is killed off one by one.
• Evil All Along : Ferriman poses as a meek weather service pilot to lure the crew of the Arctic Warrior to the derelict liner. He proves himself useful throughout the film and even seemingly saves Epps from an insane Murphy, but it's all an act. He's actually working for Hell and started the massacre on the Graza . It's implied he's done this many times over with previous salvage crews and explorers, with the relatively fresh bodies in the laundry room being from a previous crew he led into the trap.
• He explains that while the souls of those who gave in to greed, lust, or other deadly sins are "marked" and thus under his control, the souls of the innocent victims like Katie and the Captain are merely trapped, and are still themselves. He finds this annoying.
• Exactly What I Aimed At : When Epps points the speargun at Jack Ferriman , he laughs and asks what she intends to do, kill him? She fires and he realises too late that she is actually aiming at the detonator to set off the C-4 she planted .
• Face of an Angel, Mind of a Demon : Jack Ferriman has a very meek, boyish appearance and comes across as shy and non-threatening. In reality he is a demonic, shapeshifting entity responsible for the gruesome deaths that took place on the ship.
• The Ferryman : The Ferryman turns out to be the Big Bad , using the disguise of a human named Jack Ferriman . He describes himself as a "salvage expert", only he collects souls to ferry them to hell, and takes a remarkably sadistic and bloodthirsty approach in doing so.
• Final Girl : Epps lasts the longest of any good character, and is eventually the only survivor.
• After the Arctic Warrior explodes with Santos on board, Dodge gets into a scuffle with Ferriman and accuses him of causing his mate's death because Ferriman got them there in the first place. He has no idea how right he is.
• The huge painting on the Graza depicting Charon, the Ferryman of the dead.
• Ghost Ship : A salvage crew discovers a long-lost 1962 passenger ship floating lifeless in a remote region of the Bering Sea, and soon notices that its long-dead inhabitants may still be on board.
• Glamour : The ghost of Francesca uses her sultry lounge singer appearance to seduce Greer in order to kill him. After he's disposed of, she immediately shifts back into the rotten corpse she has become.
• God Job : The villain reveals he was given his job of collecting souls because he lived a lifetime of sin.
• Gold Fever : The gold bars are used by Ferriman to drive ship crews to murder people out of greed, thereby damning themselves to Hell.
• Gratuitous Italian : Not surprising, since the film takes place (mostly) on an Italian cruise ship. However, much of the Italian you'll see or hear note  like the singer's accent; now that's truly awful! (This is because Francesca Rettondini, who is Italian, was lip-syncing to a non-Italian singer. It's anyone's guess as to why she didn't just do the song herself.) is just plain wrong... Google Translate, anyone?
• Greater-Scope Villain : Ferriman implies he is working for Satan, or at least Hell. He says he needs to find enough souls to make "management" happy, and he needs the current salvage crew to fix the Graza for him to accomplish that mission.
• The Great Repair : After their tug the Arctic Warrior is sunk, the surviving members of the salvage crew decide that their best hope for survival is to patch the hole in the Antonia Graza 's hull, pump out the water, free the rudder, and try to keep the ship from running aground on the rocks until rescue arrives.
• Greed : Ferriman uses this sin to lead the people on the Antonia Graza to their demise. The crew of the Graza salvaged the gold from the Lorelei and took Ferriman onboard, and he then drove them insane with desire, causing them to murder the passengers first and then turn on each other. He uses the same prospect of gold and riches on the salvage crews he lures there, and even tries to tempt Epps at the end with other material trappings.
• Green-Eyed Monster : It's made quite clear that the gold bars are stolen loot from somewhere by their lack of markings, but the salvagers don't care, just declaring "hey, we're in international waters, so finders, keepers!". The crew of the Graza were so hungry for it that they murdered everyone else onboard to obtain it .
• Ground by Gears : Munder is crushed to death under the ship's gears while scuba diving in the flooded engine room.
• Half the People They Used to Be : Every single person, except for Katie, in the opening scene. The only reason she survives is because she's short enough that the high-tension cable goes over her head instead of through her body as it cuts across the deck.
• Heaven : Where the ghosts of the ship's innocent ("unmarked") victims finally supposedly go after Epps frees them from Ferriman. This possibly doesn't include the "marked" souls of the murderers; although they were manipulated, they still willfully participated in horrific acts of slaughter.
• Hell : Ferriman works for the establishment after a lifetime of sin. He's planning on sinking Antonia Graza once his quota is filled, sending all of the trapped/damned souls there when he does.
• He Knows Too Much : Ferriman was already planning to kill all of the crew anyways, but Murphy discovering a picture of him dated in 1962 from the Graza�s captain�s ghost, who informs him that Ferriman was the only survivor on the Lorelei and the one who led them to the gold makes him realize what is really going on, so Ferriman gets rid of him immediately by making Murphy appear to be insane to the crew and then drowning him afterwards so he can�t tell them .
• Here We Go Again! : Epps eventually succeeds in sinking the Graza , all the souls are released and Ferriman is destroyed, and she's rescued from the ocean by a passing cruise ship. Then in the last scene she sees an unharmed Ferriman walk by, taking the gold chests onto another ship and starting the cycle anew.
• In a DVD special feature, when her backstory and motivation for taking part in the massacre are revealed, her death is foreshadowed with the line I'll admit, I'm hooked...
• Imminent Danger Clue : A pendulum clock is ticking when the crew enter the ship. A dusty but still powered digital wristwatch (on a ship that went missing in 1962) is found on the bridge of Antonia Graza.
• Jacob Marley Apparel : The ghosts, particularly Katie and Francesca, are shown dressed in the same clothes they died in.
• Incorruptible Pure Pureness : Katie is unaffected by the evil's creeping influence over all the other victims of the curse as she died innocent and always will be (despite some dark hints in regard to the manner of her murder).
• Kill the Cutie : Poor Katie met the same fate as everyone else.
• Funny enough, the Scare Chord isn't in the film proper, but we still get Mood Whiplash as the score suddenly cuts to Mudvayne 's "Not Falling".
• Lazy Bum : Dodge and Munder are constantly playing "rock, paper, scissors" to get the other guy to do the job at hand.
• Logo Joke : They use the 1948-1967 Warner logo to tie in with its grisly 1962 prologue scene. Village Roadshow and Dark Castle Entertainment don't have period-appropriate logos though, so they had to settle for a sepia tone instead.
• Lust : Francesca uses her allure to drive men to murder for her, or unwittingly kill themselves trying to have sex with her when she's dead .
• Manipulative Bastard : When Ferriman is exposed as his true self, his mastery of personal manipulation becomes evident. His routine is to pretend to be a harmless guy leading greedy people to a potentially lucrative salvage operation and then a lot of gold, then manipulating them into killing themselves one by one so their souls become corrupted and he can take them to Hell. Even if he can't corrupt someone, he will still have them murdered, since their soul will be trapped on the ship and still count toward his "quota." After he's done he lures another crew there, rinse, repeat.
• Meaningful Name : Ferriman, who is an infernal accountant collecting enough souls so he can ferry them to Hell and please his masters.
• Mood Whiplash : When Epps explores Katie's cabin. They even play some soothing music in the background as Epps looks through all the typical little girl items, like her toys, her doll, her drawings. She's lulled by the innocence of it all, until she opens the closet and finds Katie's mummified body, hanged.
• Ms. Fanservice : Francesca wears a formfitting, strapless red dress when singing for the passengers. She�s also shown topless while enticing Greer, and nude from the back before she tricks Greer into falling into the elevator shaft .
• Mythical Motifs : Francesca's ghost evokes sirens; she's a supernatural woman who lures sailors to their doom by singing .
• Only Sane Man : After Santos is killed and they're stranded on the Graza , Greer is the only one to really show concern that the ship might be haunted, and that they should forget the gold, forget salvaging the ship, and get off immediately. However, Greer himself is subsequently lured to his death by Francesca. He didn't fall for greed or wrath, so Ferriman and Francesca got him with lust instead.
• Our Demons Are Different : Ferriman is a wicked former human who became a servant of Hell because of his sins. He collects souls for his infernal masters, calling himself a "salvager". He doesn't make deals, and instead tries to tempt people into committing crimes out of the mortal sin of Greed to damn their own souls, which he can then take "home" when he fills his quota. If they don't fall for Greed, he will attempt to get them with Wrath, Lust, or Pride. Failing that, innocent souls will still be trapped on the ship if they die onboard, so he can still take them to Hell even though they haven't been damned. He can shapeshift, recover from gunshot wounds, and mark the ghosts of the damned who fell to one of the mortal sins to become his servants in death.
• Our Ghosts Are Different : They're the trapped souls of dead people on a Ghost Ship . They're intangible and can project visions (true and false) to living people. They're not all malevolent, as their morality is largely informed by their personalities in life. Some actually try to help the living, while others try to kill them because they've been marked by one of Hell's accountants. It's explained that only those damned by a mortal sin can be marked.
• Peek-a-Boo Corpse : The heroine opens a closet door to find the hanged, desiccated corpse of Katie, the young ghost girl. Mind, Katie was revealing what had happened on the ship (mass murder in a variety of gruesome and cruel ways).
• Pride : The ghost crowd gets Greer to drop his guard by applauding him in the middle of the restored, pristine lounge room as if he were the man of the night. Murphy's acquaintance with a mutual ship captain also plays with this subtly.
• Punch-Clock Villain : Zig-zagged with Ferriman who claims that he is merely killing the people since "It's his job" but then he mentions getting the job due to a lifetime of sin . I'm a salvager. Just like you. You collect ships, I collect souls. And when I fill my quota, I send a boatload home. This will make management happy. You see, it's a job. Given to me after a lifetime of sin. So if I lose this ship, management won't be happy.
• Razor Floss : A support wire is used for just the first part of the mass murder in the opening scene.
• Really 700 Years Old : Ferriman hasn't aged one iota since his massacre onboard the Antonia Graza in 1962, as well as the one he did aboard the Lorelei prior to that. It's likely that the Lorelei wasn't his first gig and Lord knows how long he's been collecting souls for Hell.
• Recycled In Space : Kind of inverted here. More like Recycled FROM Space; it's Event Horizon ON A BOAT!
• The Reveal : Two are revealed in succession in the vision that Katie shows Epps of the horrors that occurred on the ship. A small part of the crew murdered everyone else onboard to get the gold bars, and Ferriman instigated all of it and killed Francesca after she had killed the last crewman; he hasn't aged a day since the 1960s, and lured Epps' crew to the Graza as well.
• Rock�Paper�Scissors : Dodge and Munder play this whenever there�s a task that neither of them want to do. Dodge always wins.
• Sarcastic Confession : The major reveal in the film is innocuously foreshadowed pretty early on, but this only becomes clear in hindsight. Epps: Have you told anyone else about this? Ferriman : Not a living soul.
• Seven Deadly Sins : A recurring theme. The villain explains he was given his job to collect souls for Hell because he lived a very sinful life, and he tries to trick people into committing sins to doom their souls. He seems most fond of greed, given his modus operandi, but if that doesn't work he'll try to get them with wrath, lust, or pride.
• Katie's fate very much resembles that of Sejanus' daughter Junilla in I, Claudius .
• Shown Their Work : The movie opens with the passengers aboard the Antonia Graza dressed to the nines and dancing on the deck and in the ballroom. Decades ago in the time period the film starts in, it used to be a real tradition to hold dances, also known as a �Captain's Ball�, to celebrate the end of a trans-Atlantic journey.
• Slashed Throat : As Katie Harwood is being forcibly dragged back to her cabin, she witnesses someone get his throat slit with a straight razor by one of the crazed crew members.
• Spotting the Thread : Epps catches on that Ferriman has killed and impersonated her last remaining crewmate when he doesn't ask her what happened to the second-to-last one, who's been killed in the interim. He drops the act and admits he already knows because he killed the other one too.
• Tampering with Food and Drink : There's a flashback comprised of a montage of images of what occurred on the Antonia Graza during the massacre. During this there's a scene in the kitchen showing that the conspirators have murdered the ship's cooks and are putting rat poison in the food. We then see passengers eating the food and one person vomits as a result.
• Too Dumb to Live : Greer knows he is on a ghost ship where some of his mates have already died. After drowning his sorrows with a drink, he decides to shut off his brain and try to make out with the seductive female ghost. He falls straight through her intangible body into an elevator shaft.
• Unstoppable Rage : The crew of the Graza indulge in this to insane degrees, turning the ship into a slaughterhouse by murdering the passengers and the rest of the crew en masse in sadistically cruel ways.
• The Vamp : Not only was Francesca involved in the mass murder, but she also seduced one of the crooks into killing his comrades before offing him herself. Unfortunately for her, her feminine wiles don't work on supernatural beings , but even after death she's still just as much a vamp as she was in life, tempting Greer and leading him to his doom. Inverted when Francesca's backstory reveals that said supernatural being actually seduced her into playing her role in the scheme. Benvenuto a bordo note  Welcome on board
• Vehicle Title : Ghost Ship
• Villainous Glutton : Dodge and Munder, two of the guys from the Arctic Warrior , start mowing down on old cans of rice they find in the kitchens of the Graza . They're soon rewarded when they realize it's been infested with maggots invoked .
• Wham Shot : The close-up of the mysterious instigator of the Antonia Graza massacre after he kills Francesca, revealing the demon to be the supposedly meek and heroic Ferriman, who originally led the protagonists to the ship .
• Would Hurt a Child : The two murderous crewmen and by extension, Ferriman, during the mass murder montage on the Graza have no qualms with killing Katie, a scared young girl.
• You Are Already Dead : A thin wire rips through everyone on the dance-floor of the ship, instantly cutting them all in half; and yet they remain standing perfectly upright... and slowly all fall apart (when in actuality they'd obviously fall immediately).
• You Remind Me of X : When they first officially meet, Katie tells Epps that she reminds her of her mother.
• Your Soul Is Mine! : Ferriman 's entire mission revolves around collecting enough souls so that he can send the entire boatload home, acquiring several hundred souls by the end before they're all freed.

DUBAI, Oct 11 (Reuters) - Israel calls last week's devastating attack by Hamas its 9/11 moment. The secretive mastermind behind the assault, Palestinian militant Mohammed Deif, calls it Al Aqsa Flood.

The phrase Israel's most wanted man used in an audio tape broadcast as Hamas fired thousands of rockets out of the Gaza Strip on Saturday signalled the attack was payback for Israeli raids at Jerusalem's Al Aqsa mosque.

It was in May 2021, after a raid on Islam's third holiest site that enraged the Arab and Muslim world, when Deif began planning the operation that has killed 1,200 people in Israel and wounded more than 2,700, a source close to Hamas said.

"It was triggered by scenes and footage of Israel storming Al Aqsa mosque during Ramadan, beating worshippers, attacking them, dragging elderly and young men out of the mosque," the source in Gaza said. "All this fuelled and ignited the anger."

In the lead up to the 2021 fighting, Israeli police put up barriers at a walled Old City gate. They said it was to maintain order but Palestinians said the barriers restricted their freedom to assemble during the holy month. Fuelling the tensions were Palestinian fears they would be evicted from nearby homes.

That storming of the mosque compound, long a flashpoint for violence over matters of sovereignty and religion in Jerusalem, helped set off 11 days of fighting between Israel and Hamas .

More than two years on, Saturday's assault, the worst breach in Israeli defences since the 1973 Arab-Israeli conflict, pushed Israel to declare war and launch retaliatory airstrikes on Gaza that have killed 1,055 people and wounded more than 5,000.

Israel has vowed swift punishment for Saturday's Hamas attack which left corpses strewn around a music festival and a kibbutz community . Scores of Israelis and others have been taken to Gaza as hostages , some paraded through the streets.

Israel said on Wednesday it had killed at least 1,000 Palestinian gunmen who infiltrated from Gaza.

A survivor of seven Israeli assassination attempts, the most recent in 2021, Deif rarely speaks and never appears in public. So when Hamas's TV channel announced he was about to speak on Saturday, Palestinians knew something significant was afoot.

"Today the rage of Al Aqsa, the rage of our people and nation is exploding. Our mujahedeen (fighters), today is your day to make this criminal understand that his time has ended," Deif said in the recording.

There are only three images of Deif: one in his 20s, another of him masked, and an image of his shadow, which was used when the audio tape was broadcast.

The whereabouts of Deif are unknown, though he is most likely in Gaza in the maze of tunnels under the enclave. An Israeli security source said Deif was directly involved in the planning and operational aspects of the attack.

Palestinian sources said one of the homes Israeli airstrikes hit in Gaza belonged to Deif's father. Deif's brother and two other family members were killed, according to the sources.

TWO BRAINS, ONE MASTERMIND

The source close to Hamas said the decision to prepare the attack was taken jointly by Deif, who commands Hamas's Al Qassam Brigades, along with Yehya Sinwar, the leader of Hamas in Gaza, but it was clear who was the architect.

"There are two brains, but there is one mastermind," the source said, adding that information about the operation was known only to a handful of Hamas leaders.

Secrecy was such that Iran, Israel's sworn foe and an important source of finance, training and weaponry for Hamas, knew only in general terms that the movement was planning a major operation and did not know the timing or the details, a regional source familiar with the group's thinking said.

The source said that while Tehran was aware a major operation was being prepared, it was not discussed in any joint operation rooms involving Hamas, the Palestinian leadership, Iranian-backed Lebanese militants Hezbollah, and Iran.

"It was a very tight circle," the source said.

Iran's top authority Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said on Tuesday Tehran was not involved in the attack on Israel. Washington has said while Tehran was complicit, it had no intelligence or evidence that points to Iran's direct participation in the attacks.

The plan as conceived by Deif involved a prolonged effort at deception. Israel was led to believe that Hamas, an ally of Israel's sworn foe Iran, was not interested in launching a conflict and was focusing instead on economic development in Gaza, where the movement is the governing power.

But while Israel began providing economic incentives to Gazan workers, the group's fighters were being trained and drilled, often in plain sight of the Israeli military, a source close to Hamas said.

"We have prepared for this battle for two years," said Ali Baraka, the head of external relations for Hamas.

Speaking in a calm voice, Deif said in his recording that Hamas had repeatedly warned Israel to stop its crimes against Palestinians, to release prisoners, whom he said were abused and tortured, and to halt its expropriation of Palestinian land.

"Every day the occupation storm our villages, towns and cities in the West Bank and raid houses, kill, injure, destroy and detain. At the same time, it confiscates thousands of acres of our land, uproots our people from their houses to build settlements while its criminal siege continues on Gaza."

'IN THE SHADOWS'

For well over a year, there has been turmoil in the West Bank, an area about 100 km (60 miles) long and 50 km wide that has been at the heart of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict since it was seized by Israel in 1967.

Deif said Hamas had urged the international community to put an end to the "crimes of the occupation", but Israel had stepped up its provocation. He also said Hamas had in the past asked Israel for a humanitarian deal to release Palestinian prisoners, but this was rejected.

"In light of the orgy of occupation and its denial of international laws and resolutions, and in light of American and western support and international silence, we've decided to put an end to all this," he said.

Born as Mohammad Masri in 1965 in the Khan Yunis Refugee Camp set up after the 1948 Arab-Israeli War, the militant leader became known as Mohammed Deif after joining Hamas during the first Intifada, or Palestinian uprising, which began in 1987.

Hamas's 1988 founding charter called for Israel's destruction, and the group is branded a terrorist organisation by Israel, the United States, the European Union, Canada, Egypt and Japan.

Although Hamas leaders have at times offered a long-term truce, or Hudna in Arabic, in return for a viable state on all the Palestinian territory occupied by Israel in 1967, Israel regards this as a ruse.

Deif was arrested by Israel in 1989 and spent about 16 months in detention, a Hamas source said.

He earned a degree in science from the Islamic University in Gaza, where he studied physics, chemistry and biology. He displayed an affinity for the arts, heading the university's entertainment committee and performing on stage in comedies.

Rising in Hamas ranks, Deif developed the group's network of tunnels and its bomb-making expertise. He has topped Israel's most wanted list for decades, held personally responsible for the deaths of dozens of Israelis in suicide bombings.

For Deif, staying in the shadow has been a matter of life or death. Hamas sources said he lost an eye and sustained serious injuries in one leg in one of Israel's assassination attempts.

His wife, 7-month-old son, and 3-year-old daughter were killed by an Israeli air strike in 2014.

His survival while running Hamas's armed wing has earned him the status of a Palestinian folk hero. In videos he is masked, or just a shadow of him is seen. He doesn't use modern digital technology such as smart phones, the source close to Hamas said.

"He is elusive. He is the man in the shadows."
