Indian Army Chief to attend inaugural UN conference on peacekeeping
United nations: indian army chief general dalbir singh suhag will attend an inaugural un conference on peacekeeping operations here later this week that will bring together the defence chiefs of un member states.un secretary general.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon will open the first 'Chiefs of Defence Conference' organised by the Departments of Peacekeeping Operations and Field Support on March 27.
India, the largest contributor of troops to UN peacekeeping operations, will be represented by Gen Suhag.
While Pakistan's Army Chief General Raheel Sharif was originally scheduled to participate in the conference, sources here told PTI that he would not be attending the meet and will be represented by one of his corps commanders.
India has contributed more than 180,000 peacekeepers in 44 UN peacekeeping missions so far and has lost 158 of its soldiers in these missions, the highest by any country, serving in the line of duty.
The day-long conference will focus on UN peacekeeping operations in the current political, strategic and operational environment as well as on the future of UN peacekeeping.
Discussions would also focus on challenges and opportunities for mission support in peacekeeping operations and performance challenges in the current security environment.
The defense chiefs will hold discussions with Under Secretary General for Peacekeeping Operations Herve Ladsous and Under Secretary General for Field Support Atul Khare.
Khare, a senior Indian diplomat, was in January appointed by the UN Chief as head of the UN Department of Field Support (DFS), an appointment that made him one of the highest ranking Indian officials in the UN system.
Several senior UN peacekeeping officials, including Military Adviser for Peacekeeping Operations Lt Gen Maqsood Ahmed of Pakistan, will also attend the conference.

Disappoints big time.
The action sequences are grippy but the politics of the film lacks any conviction or layering whatsoever. Everything and anything was happening with lack of properly research and developed content. Kabir Khan is on a roll!
The subject of the film being extremely sensitive, it must have taken oodles of courage to make a film based on it. Kabir Khan does deserve a wolf-whistle for the same. Not a Must Watch
Kabir Khan had managed to make a decent watch out of Ek Tha Tiger but with Phantom, I do not feel the same. What could have been a much wittier and slick action flick turns out to be a poorly plotted secret mission with an even unimpressive agent. (more)

"Action without over acting" - This stand out from the recent action film which only talks about hitting a container, Truck or 15 stunt choreographers in a single stunt. Phantom can be watched once for Saif's acting and the slightly better second half.Otherwise nothing much to say.A big fall from Bajrangi Bhaijaan for Kabir Khan(in terms of engaging screenplay).Do not go with high expectations, you will be disappointed. ( more )

Phantom – The untold story of unsung heroes
Motion Picture – Phantom Language – Hindi Date of Release – Aug 2015 Adaptation – Based on S.Hussain Zaidi’s novel – Mumbai Avengers Director – Kabir Khan Cast – Saif Ali Khan & Katrina Kaif

The 2015 movie – Phantom is a tribute to the unsung heroes who neither get a medal for their dare devilry nor is their identity known to the world. Even the Indian ministry doesn’t pay heed to their heroism. Who these heroes really are? They don’t have uniforms like the Indian soldiers or city cops. They don’t have any ranks or badges. These heroes are the undercover spies, agents or informers who work for nation but never get any reward from their own country.
Phantom is one such story of a disgraced military officer named Daniyal Khan who is court martialled from army for his wrong decisions during an action at war front. Leading an anonymous life, Daniyal Khan has no hopes to return back to action. A secret mission by RAW brings Daniyal Khan from anonymity to action. Daniyal accepts this mission only on the condition that after completion of this secret mission, he will be given his honour back in his regiment. Assigned with a deadly mission to eliminate the conspirators, Daniyal Khan joins hands with his team mate Nawaz Mistry to track down all the four conspirators responsible for striking terror. To hunt down the conspirators, Daniyal assumes a false identity and eliminates each conspirator without leaving only clue. The first two conspirators are eliminated by Daniyal through a strategy where the victim’s death is pronounced as natural. But during this action, Daniyal Khan is chased by agents of neighboring countries who suspect him as the mastermind behind these actions. What follows later is Daniyal’s dare devilry mission to track the remaining two conspirators and eliminate them before he is tracked down by the enemies. Daniyal succeeds in hunting down the ruthless consipirators but pays a price for his actions by giving his life for sake of nation.
Based on S.Hussain Zaidi’s novel – Mumbai Avengers, the 2015 movie – Phantom may be a work of fiction but has slice of reality to it. Phantom is a dark story of the unsung Indian agents who put their life at stake to safeguard our nation from terror attacks. Phantom is a high octane thriller which is made in the lines of movies like Zero Dark Thirty, The Lone Survivor, Munich & Black Hawk Down. A high applause to director Kabir Khan for making this brilliant patriotic thriller and showcasing the risky lives of Indian spies. Saif Ali Khan shines as Daniyal Khan in this motion picture and makes his role believable with a mind blowing performance. The highest point of this movie is the emotional climax which is sure to bring patriotic goose bumps. The role of Saif Ali Khan in Phantom seems to be inspired by real life spy Ravindra Kaushik whose code name was ‘Tiger’. Ravindra Kaushik was betrayed and was later imprisoned. He died as an unsung hero for India. Sadly his story was never known to country men in full detail. Even the 2012 movie – Ek Tha Tiger was loosely based on Ravindra Kaushik. Phantom is based on real life heroes and incidents and is sure to entertain you with its inspiring patriotic story line.
The only weak part of this movie is that it doesn’t follow the storyline as per the book. The book had six protagonists as spies while the movie has only one hero handling this mission. If you expect patriotic dialogues from this movie, then you will be disappointed. The movies focuses more on execution than on dramatic dialogues we saw in 80’s and 90’s movies like Kranti. Only Saif Ali Khan is the saving grace in the movie. The movie needed at least two heroes to bring more action and excitement to the storyline. Despite these flaws, Phantom is worth watching for its own style of presentation which reminds you of movies like Munich, Zero Dark Thirty and Green Zone.
Once you have watched Phantom, do check out these movies – D-Day, Baby, Holiday, Hurt Locker, The Lone Survivor, Munich, Black Hawk Down, Saving Private Ryan and Zero Dark Thirty which have themes of patriotism to it.

A nice entertaining review…well-written and a nice comparison with the book…though I am not a fan of ‘Phantom’, this review was indeed nice and light to read…

Bollywood has witnessed many a 'novel' idea of adapting a book into a movie. There have been many testimonies to the same in the form of novel-turned-movies. This week's release PHANTOM too is an adaptation of journalist-turned-author S.Hussain Zaidi's best seller 'Mumbai Avengers'. The film mirrors the prickly issue of cross-border terrorism, which has affected India for decades now. Will PHANTOM prove to be a Box-Office goldmine or will it spell disaster at the ticket windows, let's analyze. PHANTOM starts off with the visuals of the 26/11 Mumbai attack. This is immediately followed by a high octane car chase sequence between Daniyal Khan (Saif Ali Khan) and an unknown man in Chicago (US) who bangs his car and tries to drive away. Daniyal finally gets hold of him but accidentally kicks him off the bridge into the river below. This, then, leads to an array of flashback events, which establishes the connection between Daniyal Khan's past to his present day life. The flashback states that, after being dismissed from the Indian army, Daniyal goes into a hibernation of sorts, living an isolated and secluded life of his own. In the meanwhile, when India's RAW (Research and Analysis Wing) learns about Pakistan based terrorist group Lashkar's yet another plan of attacking India, they plan a secret operation, off the books, to take down all the accused and masterminds behind Mumbai attacks. After much research they decided on hiring Daniyal Khan for this job. The RAW officials believe that Khan is like 'Phantom', he has no records and is completely off the radar. As a part of the mission, he meets up with the beautiful and talented Nawaz (Katrina Kaif) in UK where she works as a 'Security Consultant'. The duo however gel well after Daniyal's first two missions in UK and US. Thereafter this duo's journey traverses from Beirut, Syria and finally Pakistan. Even though Daniyal Khan's mission happens to be a 'top secret' and 'highly confidential' one, the Pakistani officials sniff out his plan before Daniyal Khan reaches his ultimate goal of killing Hariz Saeed (Shahnawaz Pradhan), the mastermind behind the 26/11 attacks. Does Daniyal Khan become successful in his life threatening mission, why does Nawaz help him in his mission, are Pakistani authorities able to catch hold of Daniyal Khan, is what the rest of the story is all about. With BAJRANGI BHAIJAAN proving to be one of all time blockbusters, it becomes absolutely needless to say that all eyes are on director Kabir Khan and his latest film PHANTOM, with expectations flying sky-high. Kabir Khan, who is not a newcomer to this political genre (KABUL EXPRESS, NEW YORK, EK THA TIGER) has attempted to keep the flag flying high with PHANTOM. In this film, besides being the film's director and script writer (alongwith Kausar Munir), Kabir also doubles up as screenplay writer (alongwith Parveez Shaikh). Even though the film is an edge-of-the-seat thriller, the film does not have any 'typical' Bollywood masala. PHANTOM is not an anti-Pakistan film, but, it is anti terrorism. One cannot but deny the fact that PHANTOM does have a few traces of EK THA TIGER, but it flies high on its own merit. While Kabir Khan becomes extremely successful in establishing the film's story in the interesting and suspense filled first half, the second half seems slightly stretched. Though the film doesn't have the typical Bollywood song-dance routine or humour, it runs high on patriotism. It plays on the anger and condemnation that every Indian has over the attacks of 26/11 on Mumbai. The film offers a hypothetical solution to the terror menace and about bringing these terrorists responsible for Mumbai attacks to justice. The film, whose strength is its gripping pace, ends high on emotions and patriotism. PHANTOM, without a doubt, a very well made film by Kabir Khan. The film is very real and international, both, in its look as well as content. The film's protagonist Saif Ali Khan is decent and is convincing in the role of Daniyal Khan. His performance in PHANTOM is bound to surpass his (similar) performance in AGENT VINOD. His performance is very focussed, clinical and precise, as the role demands. Katrina Kaif, on the other hand, offers able support to Saif Ali Khan's character in the film. This film sees her performing realistic action scenes, unlike her handful of previous 'action' films. The other actors like Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub, Sabyasachi Chakrabarty, Rajesh Tailang and others offer their able support to the film. The film does not have any mainstream songs (Pritam Chakraborty), except for the hummable ' Afghan Jalebi '. On the other hand, it is the film's background score (Julius Packiam) that helps immensely in making the film emerge a complete winner. The film's cinematography (Aseem Mishra) is outstanding. The film's editing (Aarif Sheikh) is good. The flip side of the film is that its screenplay (Kabir Khan, Parveez Shaikh) could have been a bit tighter. The action sequences (Peter Pedrero) in the film are very well executed. On the whole, PHANTOM is a good action film which runs high on patriotism and will appeal to every Indian worldover. Highly Recommended.

‘tiger nageswara rao’ review: ravi teja’s film drowns due to overlong script, director vamsee’s ‘tiger nageswara rao’, starring ravi teja, is a film based on the true events of the notorious thief nageswara rao. the film’s interesting ideas are bogged down by its pacing, says our review..
Listen to Story

- 'Tiger Nageswara Rao' released in theatres on October 20.
- The film is directed by Vamsee.
- Ravi Teja plays the titular role in the film.
Release Date: 20 Oct, 2023
This week, four films from Tamil, Telugu, and Kannada graced the cinemas just ahead of the Dussehra holidays. Ravi Teja’s ‘Tiger Nageswara Rao’ is the last of the four films, which managed to pique the interest of the people with its trailer and storyline. The film is based on the real-life story of the infamous thief, Nageswara Rao.
Nageswara Rao (Ravi Teja) was born in Stuartpuram, a place notorious for sheltering thieves who resorted to theft to feed themselves. As a Guntur police officer (Murali Sharma) gets summoned to Delhi by India’s Intelligence Bureau chief Raghavendra Rajput (Anupam Kher), we get to know the crimes committed by the efficient Nageswara Rao. The PM’s office gets a call from Tiger Nageswara Rao about a theft he is going to commit. And boldly carries it out despite tight security.
As the story progresses, the bureau chief travels to Stuartpuram to learn about the life of Tiger Nageswara Rao and his motives. The second half shows the other side of Tiger Nageswara Rao and the cause he fought for.
Director Vamsee’s ‘Tiger Nageswara Rao’ had all the potential to be converted into a solid story about one of the most wanted thieves. It had a proper introduction, solid conflicts and a massy ending as well. While the film tries to chronicle the life of Nageswara Rao, it also falters in many aspects. The interesting story is bogged down by its pacing, lack of inventiveness and subpar VFX.
In the first half, we get to see Tiger Nageswara Rao as an anti-hero, who ogles at women, commits crimes and bashes up anyone who crosses paths. We get to see him through the eyes of police officer Vishwanath Sastry (Murali Sharma). The camera angles, especially when it captures the women of Tiger Nageswara Rao, don’t move beyond their bosoms. This choice is questionable and comes across as outrightly creepy when the hero actively engages in such behavior.
It is in the second half that we see the ‘real side’ of Nageswara Rao, which is narrated by Nassar, who is introduced as the Dronocharya of the thieves. He shows the empathetic side of Nageswara Rao and how he becomes the messiah of the masses. However, the film is too long with a three-hour runtime. The love portions are drab and hence you lose interest by the time you are halfway into the film.
Ravi Teja, as the titular character, single-handedly tried to lift the film with his performance. Nupur Sanon and Gayatri Bharadwaj are sexualised on screen. Jisshu Sengupta as CI Mouli looks deadly, but fails to put up a noteworthy performance.
‘Tiger Nageswara Rao’ needed more punch to keep the audience glued to their seats throughout the film. Had the team concentrated on the film’s pacing, it could have achieved the desired impact. 2 out of 5 stars for ‘Tiger Nageswara Rao’. Phantom Still - H 2015
When a group of 10 well-trained Pakistani terrorists effectively brought India to a standstill with a series of attacks at the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel and other high-profile targets in Mumbai Nov. 26, 2008, the country was left reeling. India’s precarious relations with its rival were damaged to the point that many Indians still crave revenge today.
Kabir Khan is not the first filmmaker to tackle the subject of the so-called “26/11” attacks ( Ram Gopal Varma tried it in 2013), but this film is the most successful to date. Although the film has predictably been banned in Pakistan, the well-paced action title is earning popular acclaim and will likely attract robust business at the box office in India and overseas for Disney India, a company formed when Disney acquired the major local producer/distributor UTV in 2012.

As Indian director Khan notes during the closing credits of the film, 166 people were killed during the 26/11 massacre, yet seven years later, the perpetrators have faded into the shadows and still walk free. Phantom — based on Hussain S. Zaidi’ s novel Mumbai Avengers — poses an alternative scenario, in which a smart Indian spy and his comely sidekick take down the top operators in Pakistan’s reviled Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorist organization in 2015 with one brutal strike after another. The result is a dark, if satisfying, film starring Saif Ali Khan and Katrina Kaif , and Kabir Khan’s characters in Phantom deliberately insist that it’s Pakistani terrorists who need to pay, not the Pakistani people.
Kabir Khan is a former documentarian and journalist whose cinematic obsession with Indo-Pakistani relations has fueled two of his feature films — Ek Tha Tiger and Bhajrangi Bhaijaan — both of which attained blockbuster status thanks to the pairing of Kaif with megastar Salman Khan .

Here, he casts Saif Ali Khan as Daniyal Khan, a disgraced soldier-turned-agent of India’s foreign intelligence organization, the Research and Analysis Wing or RAW, who goes undercover in exotic locales to assassinate the terror leaders and just maybe redeem himself in the eyes of the stern military father who has disowned him.
Director Khan, DP Aseem Mishra and editor Aarif Sheikh team up well for several gripping action scenes that show Daniyal’s expertise in delivering lethal results amid chaos: Daniyal struggles with a cheap plastic remote control in an attempt to detonate a bomb hidden in a microphone at a fundamentalist political rally; he kills another terrorist about to upload his photo from a war zone in Syria; and he neutralizes one chain-smoking bad guy with a well-timed gas stove bomb in a London flat. The filmmakers also generate excitement with a car chase in Chicago that opens the film, and another car chase at a remote checkpoint on the border with Afghanistan.
Saif Ali Khan is well cast as the brainy spy Daniyal , handy with weapons and a trained hand-to-hand killer. Khan is believable as a capable operative with a genuine affection for family and country, but Kaif , better in light roles than in hard-hitting action films like this, is wooden and overwhelmed here. The film’s supporting actors are uniformly excellent, especially Sohaila Kapur as a sympathetic Lakshar-e-Taiba nurse and Mohammad Zeeshan Ayyub as an Indian intelligence official moved by Daniyal’s sacrifice.

Watch: “Phantom” Starring Honey Lee, Park So Dam, And More Confirms Release Date + Teases Action-Packed Story In Daunting New Trailer And Poster
Honey Lee and Park So Dam ’s upcoming film “ Phantom ” has unveiled numerous new teasers and confirmed its release date!
Directed by Lee Hae Young, “Phantom” is set in 1933 during the Japanese colonization of Korea. The film draws out the intense story of various suspects who have been locked up in a secluded hotel as potential “phantom” spies planted by anti-Japanese organizations in the Japanese Government-General of Korea. As they try to prove themselves innocent and escape, they come to face the real phantom’s unstoppable operation.
The film stars Honey Lee, Park So Dam, Sol Kyung Gu , Park Hae Soo , and Seo Hyun Woo , who are all featured on the newly released poster. Their character transformations capture the essence of the Japanese colonial period in 1933 and previews the haunting hotel that sits at the edge of a cliff.
This hotel is a trap aimed to catch phantoms and spies of anti-Japanese organizations and is intentionally placed on a cliffside where there is no escape. This haunting and deceiving place will be the start of the story about those who must be caught, those who must prove their innocence to live, and real phantoms who must not be caught.

Sol Kyung Gu stars as Junji Murayama, a Japanese police officer whose expression on the poster is a mix between suspicion and caution, while Honey Lee stars as Park Cha Kyung, who is in charge of communication records and cryptograms for the Government-General. Park So Dam plays the fashionable Yuriko, the secretary of the Government-General political affairs chief, despite being Korean. Park Hae Soo portrays captain Kaito Dakahara, and Seo Hyun Woo plays chief Chung, who has sharp deciphering skills.
The film also released additional stills of Honey Lee, Park So Dam, and Park Hae Soo, with the former actress saying of her character, “Cha Kyung is a character who harbors a deep, unfathomable sadness. She is a character who deeply suppressed her emotions, rather than opening up and resolving them. Out of all the characters I’ve played, I believe Cha Kyung is the person who is the most open-minded with the highest caliber. That’s how wide the range of acting was that I could do and I thought that was a different kind of fun.”

Park So Dam added of Yuriko, “Since she’s an unpredictable character with a lot of variables, I thought about just how differently I could portray her in a variety of ways.” Director Lee Hae Young, who previously worked with the actress on “The Silenced,” commented, “Even if I give her the smallest tip, she always puts it into play and is a player who’s prepared to showcase her perfect skills. I felt trust from the first moment I saw her and she’s someone who makes sure this trust does not waver or break at any moment.”

For his role as Kaito, Park Hae Soo is said to have memorized his lines, which are entirely in Japanese, in just two weeks, as well as the Japanese lines of his co-stars. The director shared, “When I first saw Park Hae Soo, it was the image of Kaito I had imagined in my head while writing the script. If I’m to describe my satisfaction with the Kaito that Park Hae Soo acted as, it’s 100 percent.”
Park Hae Soo commented, “From the day I was cast, I practiced everyday for five to six hours. I did think a lot about [conveying] lines that need to occupy space in a foreign language, and I did my best.”

The new trailer gives a glimpse of the tense game of suspicion these characters have to play in order to survive. Kaito gathers all the suspects and announces his suspicions about one of them being a phantom spy for an anti-Japanese organization that has deeply infiltrated the Joseon Government-General. He gives them one last chance to save themselves as he asks, “Who is the phantom you know?”
In order to live, he gives them all two choices: either prove yourself innocent, or report someone else.
Catch the action-packed trailer below!
“Phantom” hits theaters early next year on January 18.
