Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol (Ultra HD 4K Blu-ray)

mission impossible ghost protocol 4k blu ray

Review by: Matt Brighton

Plot: What’s it about?

Who’d have thought, in 1996, that the Mission: Impossible franchise would still be going strong? Actually, let’s take a leap back three more decades and ask that same question? I’m pretty sure the answer to both is a resounding “No.” But, here we are, 2012 and the end of the world looming and lo and behold we’ve got a fourth Mission: Impossible film and wouldn’t you know it – it’s widely considered to be the best of the franchise. Who said that things don’t improve with age? Our lead actor, the indelible Mr. Tom Cruise, has had some highs and lows since the first couple of films – most notably his “couch jumping” and his profession of love for Katie Holmes on Oprah’s show (circa 2005) and the cast has changed – again. Still, we have to ask ourselves what it is about these films that keeps drawing us back in. Is it that unmistakable theme music, courtesy of Lalo Schifrin? The impossible odds that the IMF team faces? Or is it that we simply like to be entertained? Whatever the reason, our mission – should we choose to accept it, lies ahead.

In this fourth installment we find Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) in the midst of one of the IMF’s missions. As much as we’d like to think that things always work out for Hunt and his team, that’s just not the case. An agent (Josh Holloway) is gunned down, things go awry and wouldn’t you know that the Kremlin itself is partially destroyed. The IMF is held accountable for this wrongdoing and has now been cut off from any and all government support. It’s up to Hunt and his band of merry men (and woman) to find out who’s responsible for the bombing of the Kremlin, but restore the name of the IMF and make it out of everything, well, alive. And on the surface, that’s it. A lot easier than trying to figure out the first movie, wasn’t it? Of course there are plenty of action sequences, an amazing scene in which Cruise scales the Burj Khalifa (aka “The Tallest Building in the World”) and disguises galore. Let’s face it, if you’ve seen any or all of the previous films then this is one that you simply can’t miss.

As previously mentioned, the cast (apart from Cruise) is all new. We find Simon Pegg fully comfortable in his comic relief role, Jeremy Renner delivering another strong performance and the lovely Paula Patton in the role of the vixen. I won’t say that some familiar faces don’t appear, but by and large this quartet is what makes the movie run. The most recent director is Brad Bird. Yes, that one. For those that don’t know, Bird came from the world of animation and has directed such favorites as The Iron Giant , The Incredibles and Ratatouille . Nevertheless, whatever Bird’s roots it appears as if he’s transitioned to the role of “live-action” director quite nicely. Whatever your personal feelings for Tom Cruise or the Mission: Impossible franchise in general it can’t be denied that this latest installment is as entertaining as they come.

Video: How does it look?

I vent about the audio below, but there’s no denying that the 2.40:1 HEVC 4K image really does look, for lack of a better term, perfect. Colors pop, blacks are black and contrast is right on the mark. Would you expect any less? Me neither. I think the bar has been set so high with some of these new (and old) releases, that anything less is unacceptable. The detail is amazing, we can see the ever-growing wrinkles in Cruise’s forehead, the scruff in his five o’clock shadow and all the little bells and whistles in the gadgets that the IMF team has in stock. It’s a top notch transfer and one that won’t disappoint.

Audio: How does it sound?

Ok, I was willing to give the first Mission: Impossible a pass on (lack of) Atmos soundtrack due to its age. And I was even willing to do the same with the second (2000). The third was a pretty big disappointment, but with this installment -there really is no excuse. This movie was released in 2011 and there simply is no reason that this disc shouldn’t have a Dolby Atmos mix. But all my whining can’t and won’t do anything, so with that said…Dialogue is clear and clean, the discrete sound effects add a layer of tension and excitement to the mix and there are plenty of “in your face” moments that make this one of the most ambitious mixes. Put it this way, my wife (who watched this with me) turned around on multiple occasions when a surround channel was engaged. If that’s not the mix doing its job, I don’t know what is. Still, to know that it could (and should) have sounded better is a real disappointment.

Supplements: What are the extras?

This Ultra HD version takes the previously-released two-disc version (for a time, only available at Best Buy) and ports over all of those features. As expected, nothing new has been added.

  • Mission Accepted – Suiting Up in Prague  – If you’re looking for a good, all-around EPK then this is it. We get some comments from Bird, who has been “gifted” with a lot of creative liberties as well as Cruise and J.J. Abrams who chime in from the producers’ point of view. The shooting locales are covered as are some of the challenges with filming a movie of this stature. It’s a good piece.
  • Mission Accepted – Heating Up in Dubai  – Another all encompassing piece that focuses on the main locale – Dubai. Some of the challenges shooting there as well as some of the authentic stunts and so forth.
  • Mission Accepted – Vancouver Fisticuffs  – Basically the same as above, only the focus is on Vancouver (a popular shooting location that easily doubles for Los Angeles).
  • Impossible Missions – The Russian Prison  – We get some information on the scene as well as some information on Brad Bird and his work in the live-action arena.
  • Impossible Missions – Shooting in IMAX  – Basically a crash course in shooting for a large format venue and some of the challenges involved in doing so.
  • Impossible Missions – Art Department – If you’ve ever wanted to see Prague become Russia, look how the magic of movies made it happen!
  • Impossible Missions – A Roll of Film  – This was pretty interesting (to me, at least) as we see the process of what happens to the film after the shot.
  • Impossible Missions – Life Masks  – Those masks have to come from somewhere, right? Here’s how they do it.
  • Impossible Missions – Stepping Into the Storm – The sandstorm sequence is broken down here.
  • Impossible Missions – The Sandstorm  – A more in-depth look at the sandstorm that was partially filmed in Vancouver and Dubai.
  • Impossible Missions – Dubai Car Crash  – A very thorough look at the car crash that examines all of the angles and even with all the planning, we see how some things can still go wrong.
  • Impossible Missions – Lens on the Burj  – I’d imagine there are a lot of things that can go wrong when filming on the world’s tallest building. Here’s a look at some of the challenges.
  • Impossible Missions – Props  – Pretty much that – a look at many of the props used in the film.
  • Impossible Missions – Composer  – A look at the work of Composer Michael Giacchino.
  • Hendricks Practices His Speech
  • Mission on the Train
  • Confusion in the Van
  • Benji Almost Caught in the Kremlin
  • Hendricks and Leonid in the Hangar
  • Arrival at the Burj
  • Ethan and Jane in the Jet
  • Wistrom and Chips. With Optional Brad Bird commentary.
  • Theatrical Trailers

The Bottom Line

Half a dozen years passed between Mission: Impossible III and Ghost Protocol (aka “ Mission: Impossible IV “) and it’s safe to say that it was worth the wait. Director Brad Bird, well-known for his work in the world of animation, proved that he had what it took to get the job done in the live-action realm.  This acted as a pseudo “reboot” for the franchise much in the same way that Fast and Furious (2009) did for that one. While it’s once again disappointing that there are no new supplements included or a new audio mix, the uptick in video quality makes this one an integral part of your 4K Mission: Impossible collection.

Mission: Impossible - 6-Movie Collection - 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray

Defying all expectations, the Mission: Impossible series miraculously continues to grow in both visual spectacle and engaging storytelling, as each new installment somehow manages to be better than its predecessor, partly thanks to the evolution and growth of the franchise's central hero, Ethan Hunt. Fans can now enjoy all six films as if for the first time on 4K Ultra HD, featuring excellent Dolby Vision HDR presentations, outstanding high-resolution audio but the same set of supplements as the Blu-rays. Overall, the 13-disc UHD package is Recommended and makes for a great addition to the library.

mission impossible ghost protocol 4k blu ray

Both the Fast & Furious and Mission: Impossible films have defied expectations over the years, as each new installment only seems to improve upon its predecessor. But whereas the Furious entries can function as standalone popcorn actioners hellbent at marveling moviegoers with insane vehicular mayhem, the Impossible franchise is a smartly-crafted interconnected series that grows and advances with its central hero, Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise). While also astounding audiences with plenty of stunning visual spectacle and astonishing feats of daredevilry, every new sequel expands on the character's mythos, showing that he and his allies live in a larger universe that affects his personality and decisions. Action sequences are a direct result of his choices, the outcome of a decisiveness that has potentially been influenced by the events of the movies which have preceded it. And it's with this in mind that makes the Mission: Impossible series so entertaining, watching a talented, astute and otherwise sensible individual afflicted by years of sacrifice, conscious of the impact his choices have had on his personal life, as well as the world around him.

Video Review

mission impossible ghost protocol 4k blu ray

Disavowed IMF agents fight the state-of-the-art espionage world of Ultra HD with mostly excellent and highly-satisfying HEVC H.265 encode in Dolby Vision HDR. As would be expected, the last three entries of the franchise look the best and the first two are arguably the weakest. But overall, with improved contrast, brightness and a wider color gamut, all six movies have never looked better than in these 4K presentations.

Audio Review

mission impossible ghost protocol 4k blu ray

Accompanying the new and improved video, the franchise is also joined by a range of excellent and reference-quality audio presentations. A few years ago when the original trilogy first hit Blu-ray, the three films arrived with legacy Dolby Digital audio, but for Ultra HD, they have been upgraded to lossless 5.1 Dolby TrueHD. The last three feature the same soundtracks also enjoyed on their BD counterparts. More specifically, Ghost Protocol comes with a 7.1 Dolby TrueHD track, while Rogue Nation and Fallout are equipped with Dolby Atmos soundtracks.

Special Features

mission impossible ghost protocol 4k blu ray

All the same assortment of supplements are ported over from previous home video releases. The commentary tracks are shared with the UHD discs, and the rest of the special features can be found on the accompanying Blu-rays. You can read more about the bonuses in the individual links above.

Final Thoughts

mission impossible ghost protocol 4k blu ray

With the last three entries, the Mission: Impossible series has defied all expectations, as each new installment somehow progresses for the better both in visual spectacle and engaging storytelling. Much of the enjoyment comes from watching the franchise's central hero, Ethan Hunt, grow and evolve over the years with each new adventure taking its toll on his personality and informing his decision-making. Fans can now enjoy all six films as if for the first time on 4K Ultra HD, featuring excellent Dolby Vision HDR presentations that appreciably improve on their HD SDR counterparts and are accompanied by outstanding high-resolution audio soundtracks. Although the same set of supplements are ported over, the overall UHD package is Recommended and makes for a great addition to the library.

Story Review Storyline: Our Reviewer's Take

mission impossible ghost protocol 4k blu ray

The fourth installment in the 'Mission: Impossible' franchise finds secret agent Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) and his team framed for a Kremlin terrorist bombing. Disavowed by their country and with no IMF agency support, Ethan and his team (Jeremy Renner, Simon Pegg, and Paula Patton) must find the real terrorists before the next attack in order to save the world and clear their names. But in the spy world, all double agents have secrets, and Ethan might not be able to fully trust the only people who can possibly save him.

'Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol' is a fun, energetic movie (perhaps the series' best, but that will an individual preference). It begins with a smart script by Josh Appelbaum and André Nemec, who have decided to ground the film emotionally in Ethan's reaction to the loss of his wife. Another smart move is the idea of restricting access to all the hightech gadgets. They're still here, but seem to break more often and things we expect (like the masks) don't work at all, leaving our heroes to face greater obstacles than in previous installments. Ethan and team feel (a little) less like superheroes and more like real people. Further, Tom Cruise's performance proves he's still got his dramatic and action chops. The trio of Pegg, Patton, and Renner are also well drawn, each suffering from a thematic loss in line with Ethan Hunt.

I enjoyed the film so much, I only have a couple minor complaints. Some might argue film franchises are better when they continue one long story, while others might say they should be standalone. For me, because I hadn't seen ' M:I3 ' in a while, I couldn't quite remember all the emotional details previously set up in the other film. I wish, like reading sequel books, a little more time had been given to reminding us about the world. This may sound at odds with my compliments above, so let me be clear: the movie works well, but if you haven't seen the third film (at all or in some time), you might find yourself slightly distracted wondering what the characters are talking about. For the most emotionally fulfilling experience, perhaps it's best to watch 'M:I3' and 'Ghost Protocol' back to back.

For my last nitpick: while the film's CGI is generally impressive (and probably used a lot more than I realize), sandstorms and a few of the explosions still look a little cartoonish.

Overall, 'Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol' is a smartly written, expertly directed, edge of your seat action thriller I can't wait to watch again and again. Consider my tickets purchased for 'M:I5' and whatever Brad Bird makes next.

The Blu-ray: Vital Disc Stats

We are reviewing the Best Buy Exclusive three disc Blu-ray + DVD + Digital Copy edition of 'Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol'. The first disc is a Blu-ray exclusively housing the feature film. Disc two is another Blu-ray for the high definition special features. Disc three is a DVD of the feature film. There are no forced trailers on either Blu-ray, and they do not appear to be Region-locked (though this is untested). Lastly, this film's portable copies are available via UltraViolet as well as Digital Copy (which works with iTunes). The UV copy will stream to any of your devices, and is HD (and should work with Walmart's VUDU service either now or sometime next month); the Digital Copy is SD.

Video Review

'Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol' debuts on Blu-ray with a near-reference, stunning AVC MPEG-4 encode framed in a 2.35:1 aspect ratio.

This film looks great. Everything you love about high definition is on this disc. Inky black levels for night and underground scenes. Primary colors pop off the screen, especially in the India sequences. Skin tones are even (though perhaps a bit flushed) despite changes in the film's color palate to match various locations. Detail and resolution are superb, especially the 30 minutes of IMAX-filmed scenes, which attain a dimensionality akin to 3D. However, popping back and forth can be a little jarring, as the 35mm elements aren't quite as sharp. Film grain is subtle, but adds a nice texture to the experience. And, thankfully, there doesn't seem to be any edge enhancement or digital noise reduction on hand.

In terms are flaws or complaints, I have two. The first is an actual (minor) problem, and is the reason why this is a 4.5 star video rating. The second is more of a personal question, and does not affect the score.

In terms of flaws, while the only thing on the first disc is the film and its soundtracks, I did find one compression issue: banding. I noticed it in the scenes where we get to the team's Dubai hideout. Being smoky, darkly lit, and filled with about 800 variations on the color brown, I noticed a couple subtle, blocky bands in the background walls and stairs. Not the end of the world, really, and pretty hard to find, but there if you look closely.

My other nitpick is the 2.35:1 aspect ratio. I'm sure those of you with constant height projection systems are thrilled with Mr. Bird's decision to crop the film for its entirety. However, I saw the film theatrically at an IMAX theatre and, much like 'The Dark Knight' and 'Tron: Legacy' , would have enjoyed the various IMAX sequences expanded to a 16:9 aspect ratio (though admittedly, still not the full IMAX framing). The Burj sequence was terrifying thanks to the vertigo-inducing tall IMAX framing, and perhaps that would have translated here. However, I fully respect Mr. Bird's choice and, as I said before, this has no bearing on the score.

Audio Review

Simply put, this 7.1 Dolby TrueHD soundtrack is pure demo material.

With the exception of the lackluster (in terms of surround sound) Paramount 100 Years logo theme music, this track literally opens with a bang and thrusts all listeners into the 'Mission: Impossible' universe. Sure, we expect the big stuff like car chases and explosions to rock our world, but this exemplary track is one of the most lifelike I've ever heard. Echoes of squeaking metal doors, claustrophobic sewers environments, the blowing wind swinging hundreds of feet in the air outside the Burj Dubai, the rippling shockwave of an impending explosion. It's all richly detail and absorbing.

When writing reviews, I often replay the film in the background. As I was typing this paragraph, I forgot about a certain ambush / car crash sequence and just startled myself as my entire living room swirled into action. Please note this isn't a pound-you-over-the-head track that is only loud and aggressive. It's subtle in how certain details appear discretely in all eight channels (again, lifelike). Dialog is always clear. LFE doesn't simply roar, it supports every door closing, gun shot and, as I said before, shockwave. If you're an audio fan who gets an inordinate amount of joy out of hearing your 7.1 system pushed in every direction over the entire dynamic range of sound, you'll love-love-love this track. 7.1 just got even better.

Overall, I couldn't find a single complaint. This is a must-listen disc and auditory perfection.

Special Features

Paramount Pictures Home Entertainment has assembled a very nice collection of special features, consisting of two in-depth documentaries that are a cut above the standard EPK "look how great we are" stuff, eight deleted scenes, and two theatrical trailers. Sadly, there are no picture-in-picture features or audio commentaries with the filmmakers.

  • Mission Accepted (HD, 48 mins) - A terrific making-of featurette, which can be watched as on documentary or in its three separate parts: "Suiting Up In Prague", "Heating Up In Dubai", and "Vancouver Fisticuffs". Director Brad Bird takes you on location to show you how he came up with his vision for the 'Mission:Impossible' universe. It's also pretty fun to see how much of the film is real, and how much is CGI-augmented. Producer J.J. Abrahams and Producer-Star Tom Cruise also make appearances.
  • Impossible Missions (HD, 51 mins) - Another lengthy documentary that can be split up into: "The Russian Prison", "Shooting in IMAX", "Art Department", "A Roll of Film", "Life Masks", "Stepping Into The Storm", "The Sandstorm", "Dubai Car Crash", "Lens on the Burj", "Props", and "Composer". A nice, in-depth selection of short featurettes about the film's stunts and various departments. This is like a mini-filmschool for anyone who aspires to make movies.
  • Deleted Scenes (HD, 15 mins) - There are eight deleted, or alternate, scenes to watch with or without Audio Commentary by Director Brad Bird.
  • Trailers (HD, 5 mins) - two full length trailers.

Bottom Line

Final thoughts.

Thanks to a character-driven screenplay, and Brad Bird's thrilling live action filmmaking debut, 'Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol' injects new energy and life into an aging series. It's exciting, suspense and (rare these days) visual coherence fuel the action, and you actually care about the people. As a Blu-ray, it features top flight video and a killer, reference quality 7.1 Dolby TrueHD soundtrack. The high definition special features are well produced, and a cut above pat-on-the-back EPKs.

If you enjoyed 'Ghost Protocol' theatrically and have been anticipating this Blu-ray release, pre-order it now. Hell, there's a button on this page where you can do just that. If you're new to the franchise or haven't seen 'Ghost Protocol', this is a great place to start. As I said above, you might want to watch part three first to get the most out of it, but 'Ghost Protocol' still works as a standalone thriller. If you love audio demos, this is your new must-have disc for 2012.

Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol 4K UHD Review

Funny how some movies end up accidentally prophetical. Here’s an action flick from 2011 with a deep-rooted fear of nukes, critical of American intelligence agencies, leery of Russian influences, and concerned with nuclear trades in the middle east. All that’s needed is a news chyron scrolling along the bottom.

Ghost Protocol goes for the all-out approach, a forceful collection of Hollywood craftsmanship, action ingenuity, and elaborate stunts. People shoot at each other, punch each other, crash into each other, and torture each other. People don’t like each other in this movie.

This is a lighter Mission: Impossible . Simon Pegg gains a bigger role and Jeremy Renner digs for laughs. One-liners pull Ghost Protocol more in-line with contemporary blockbusters. It’s for the best too. Ghost Protocol tempts audiences with plausibility. A bit of air letting helps.

As with each movie in the series, Ghost Protocol concerns a hunt for an object. In this case, a briefcase. There’s better scripting here though. That briefcase emboldens the plot rather than circle around outside of it.

It’s all impressive and staging is no less so

Less of a carry-on, that briefcase contains nuclear launch codes, playing in an American cinematic casualness toward nuclear extinction. Ghost Protocol’s villain talks up radioactive annihilation as a solution to Earth’s problems, a direct baddie with little moral ambulation. Such a man cannot exist for long in reality though, at least according to Ghost Protocol’s laissez-faire approach. There’s always an Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) to save the country – and the world.

To save Earth, Hunt clings to the Burj in Saudia Arabia, fights through a sandstorm, infiltrates lavish parties, and brawls with someone on the active elevators of a high-class car port. It’s all impressive and staging is no less so. Director Brad Bird proves as capable in live action as he was in animation with The Iron Giant .

Bonus points, too, for this fourth entry. Ghost Protocol finally gives a woman something to do in a Mission: Impossible . After spending three movies treating women as meager goals for men to save, Paula Patton engages in a fun hotel room brawl and plays a key role in a climactic shoot-out.

Unavoidably, there’s a sameness at the heart of Mission: Impossible . It’s a series now built less on the bulk of spy theatrics than it is suicidal stuntwork. Ghost Protocol has a lot of that. That’s the sum of its success.

mission impossible ghost protocol 4k blu ray

Paramount pushes Ghost Protocol to UHD in a static presentation. Brad Bird filmed a number of scenes for IMAX displays, but the ratio here is locked to 2.35:1. That’s a bit of a downer.

More of a downer is the destructive contrast. Frequently clipping, it robs Ghost Protocol of fidelity. Highlights don’t glisten with the help of Dolby Vision so much as they eradicate texture. At times, it’s ghastly, giving the “Ghost” of the title new meaning.

That’s all true of black levels too, a problem for Mission: Impossible in 4K as whole. Crush is dominant. Look at Jeremy Renner’s first appearance, where his suit blends into the seat behind him. That’s common.

Filmed with both 35 and 65mm stocks, there’s slight difference between the two. Notable is, of course, the grain structure. It’s near non-existent with the 65mm IMAX material. However, that does come with a small cost: a mild edginess that indicates a touch of digital sharpening. A few anomalies aside, 35mm stays consistently precise with excellent reproduction. That Paramount’s encode holds even under the weight of a sandstorm says a lot.

Until the third act, Ghost Protocol utilizes two basic palettes, the traditional orange and blues. Flesh tones steer a bit wonky (another consistency of these 4K Mission: Impossibles ). Otherwise, deep color provides light density. Once into India, reds and turquoises begin to sprout. It’s gorgeous. Seeing the city at night rivals the Shanghai scenery of Mission: Impossible III ; that goes for both color and HDR intensity.

Vivid use of a TrueHD 7.1 soundstage keeps Ghost Protocol consistently active. Immediate gunfire begins popping from the center rears, while the Kremlin’s near destruction shreds the LFE and layers a great debris field. Superlative range produces thick low-end and punchy highs, all with the expected clarity and heavy dynamics.

As with the previous Blu-ray, the Dubai sandstorm is a delight. Wind spreads throughout the soundstage as various debris pans about. Appreciating downtime, ambiance plays a role too, keeping the rears active as the IMF team plans a move from inside a train car safe house. And again, the Dubai sequence gains tension from the wind as Cruise hangs from the Burj.

Paramount leaves the film to its own devices on the UHD and Blu-ray. That leaves a third disc to push bonus features, split into two sections for roughly two hours of content. Mission Accepted contains three behind-the-scenes featurettes focused on specific locations and stunts, including that perilous Burj stunt. Footage of Cruise being playful while suspended by two wires is awesome.

Impossible Missions are 11 pieces with less specific purposes. Shooting on IMAX, choosing a composer, effects in the sandstorm, props, and the prison shoot are included, among others. For these and the Accepted clips, the same holds true: they’re wonderfully produced. Although quite high on the praise for Cruise (some might say ego-stroking), they feel natural, honest, and open to the audience. It’s more than face time interviews.

Director Brad Bird details the eight deleted scenes via an optional commentary, the last bonus section aside from trailers. It’s a shame that Bird doesn’t get to chat over the main feature though.

Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol finally has fun with this series, alleviating some unavoidable sameness while coordinating with future fears.
