Critic Reviews for Ghost Rider

Audience reviews for ghost rider.

Yes this is dumb and yes everyone involved knows it but I can't shake the feeling that the movie is just a little too smug about being self aware.

movie ghost rider 2007

Please God make it stop. This has to be in the Top 5 of the worst comic book movies ever. Nicholas Cage is horrible, the script is terrible, and the action is just boring. Only good thing are the CGI effects for the Ghost Rider. Don't. Just don't watch this. Even if there is the threat of titty twisters... Still not worth it.

Choc full of wannabe Western-isms and expected cheese, Ghost Rider is a foray into not-a-whole-lot. Ghost Rider strikes me as the sort of comic that didn't need a whole lot of chopping to translate well to the big screen, unfortunately, director Mark Steven Johnson neglected all that, and went for a full on self-made, effects-drive flop. Don't get me wrong, I know I bitch about "effects-driven" a lot, but sometimes it works fine, it's just that Ghost Rider has absolutely no staying power, there's really nothing to it that would make me recommend it to a friend. I think another major problem is that it aims for 'quirk" and ends up with "cheese". Too dark and long to be considered a silly, fun, little guilty pleasure, but too self-concious and non-sensical to be realistic. What's supposed to be The Devil's Bounty Hunter, riding the world to bring the guilty to justice, ends up being more of a Mad Max wannabe riding a badass motorbike notching up his cliche-meter and pouring the CG-budget down the drain, while bringing as many motifs up as he can. Though much of the film was quite weak, watching the demons (trenchcoat wearin' mo-fo's above) getting taken out one by one, somewhat akin to, oh, as for example a comic book, was entertaining enough to hold my attention. And Wes Bentley (P2, Jonah Hex) as Blackheart was, at the very least a "cool" character to bring to the film. Not exactly a masterpiece, but its very few up points did keep me interested enough to hold out for the sequel, Spirit of Vengeance, which supposedly comes out on the 17th of February 2012, starring another favourite of mine, Cirian Hines. 38% -Gimly

This demonic Marvel adaptation is visually groundbreaking, no doubt, but is not an easy ride. Ghost Rider's exaggerated tone and dialogue and hell-driven sequences provides many speed bumps on this less-than-anticipated ride. 3/5

Johnny Blaze (Nicolas Cage) was only a teenaged stunt biker when he sold his soul to the devil (Peter Fonda). Years later, Johnny is a world renowned daredevil by day, but at night, he becomes the Ghost Rider of Marvel Comics legend. The devil's bounty hunter, he is charged with finding evil souls on earth and bringing them to hell. But when a twist of fate brings Johnny's long-lost love (Eva Mendes) back into his life, Johnny realizes he just might have a second chance at happiness - if he can beat the devil and win back his soul. To do so he'll have to defeat Blackheart (Wes Bentley), the devil's nemesis and wayward son, whose plot to take over his father's realm will bring hell on earth--unless Ghost Rider can stop him.

Rotten Tomatoes® Score

One of the drawcards of having Disney+ at your fingertips...

Even the special effects are pitiable.

This strange amalgamation of Texas Ranger lore, NASCAR bravado, and the-Devil-and-Daniel-Webster trickery keeps the campy fun revving just enough that you can't completely hate it.

This movie is stupid in the best possible way. I cheered all the way through - my shrieks of glee echoing off the walls.

Don't worry your little head with the niceties of plot; they don't matter much.

Best lines? "Is this thing ever gonna end?" "Not even close." "I shore wish this thang coulda turned out different."

Ignore the cheesy dialogue, the cardboard cut-out villains and the atrociously OTT acting and just enjoy a good old-fashioned tale of heroes and villains the way the comic-books used to tell 'em.

It all seems so wearyingly old fashioned: teenage delinquents on motorbikes, creaky incarnations of Satan, a rock'n'roll take on dangerous cool.

Cage needs to produce something special next to make up for crimes against cinema.

Synopsis [ ]

Years ago, motorcycle stuntman Johnny Blaze (Nicolas Cage) sold his soul to save the life of a loved one. Now, he transforms into a fiery, avenging agent of justice at night wherever evil roams. As the only one who can walk in both worlds, Johnny is charged by Mephistopheles (Donal Logue) himself to destroy Blackheart (Wes Bentley), a demon that wants to overthrow Mephistopheles and create a worse hell than the one that currently exists.

Johnny Blaze, a motorcycle stunt performer, makes a deal with the devil to cure his dying father of cancer. When he dies anyway, the devil known as Mephisto claims his soul. Because of this, Johnny is unable to run off with his girlfriend, Roxanne Simpson.

Years later, Johnny Blaze is a big-time performer who pulls off outrageous bike stunts, and, due to his inability to die, he perfects each one without injury. Just before his biggest stunt, he meets Roxanne again, who is now a reporter. After the stunt, he asks Roxanne out on a date. She agrees but is stood up by Johnny.

Later on, Mephisto calls upon Johnny and instructs him to retrieve the Contract of a Thousand Souls to him from his son, Blackheart, on a deal that he would return his soul. Thus, he gives him the power of a demon and he transforms into the Ghost Rider. He quickly finds Blackheart but is abruptly crushed by a truck, who the driver Ghost Rider quickly kills. As he rides off on his flaming motorcycle in search of Blackheart, he comes across a woman being threatened at knifepoint by a hooded mugger.

Ghost Rider stops him with his Penance Stare, which confronts the mugger with the murderous crimes he had committed and reverts the pain he has brought to himself, stealing his soul and effectively killing him. Ghost Rider then blacks out and wakes up at a graveyard, where he meets a man known as the Caretaker. He tells of Blackheart's history as Johnny learns that he and his minions were once angels cast out of Heaven. He finds Roxanne again in the midst of the destruction the Ghost Rider had caused the night before and they meet again at his apartment to talk over their date incident.

Johnny then reveals to Roxanne that he is the Ghost Rider, and that is why they can never be together. Roxanne, unsurprisingly, doesn't believe him, and they leave on bad terms. Police later arrest Johnny as they have discovered that he was the one terrorizing the town. They throw him in jail where he is confronted by several evil criminals who then begin to attack him. He becomes the Ghost Rider, steals one of their spiked leather jackets, and escapes. He then comes across another evil spirit by the name of Abigor, who was sent by Blackheart. After a quick battle, the police find him again and he drives up a building to escape them.

Roxanne sees the Ghost Rider in the action, now realizing Johnny was telling the truth, and he rides off. She goes to his apartment, where Blackheart is waiting, and he holds Roxanne hostage to set a trap for Johnny. He then tells him the Caretaker was holding the Contract the whole time and instructs him to collect it and bring it to him. When Johnny finds the Caretaker, they both agree to take down Blackheart, revealing that he is in fact, Carter Slade and was another demon called the Phantom Rider.

Together, they Carter and Johnny both ride off to find Blackheart, but Carter is unable to help him since he could only transform one more time. Blackheart, who is still holding Roxanne hostage, obtains the contract and absorbs a thousand souls.

But Ghost Rider uses his penance stare to steal the souls away from Blackheart and he consequently dies. When Roxanne is saved, Mephisto arrives to collect the Contract and offers Johnny is soul back. He denies, declaring he would own the curse and be the Spirit of Vengence. He leaves Roxanne and they depart ways as Johnny rides off into his destiny.

Cage steals two hours of the audience’s life by starring in a ridiculous action fantasy. I watched it late at night and simply fell asleep a couple of times. Every Nicolas Cage Comic Book Adaptation, Ranked

Posted: July 27, 2023 | Last updated: July 27, 2023

Nicolas Cage is one of the most impressive and prolific figures in Hollywood history. So, when a man has made as many movies as Cage (i.e. a lot of movies), there's bound to be a comic book adaptation or two. Or, in Cage's case, eight. And, given his mainstream resurgence with Renfield (which gained attention but not dollars), it stands to reason the actor could star in even more down the line.

His comic book adaptations released thus far weren't all made with equal care (even if Cage, true to form, consistently gives his all) and they certainly didn't receive universally positive marks from critics and audience members, but even the low points have their fans. These are the comics adaptations starring Nicolas Cage. Should they all be watched? Probably not, unless one is a Cage completist, but some of these films manage to rank among the best of the actor's entire filmography.

Jiu Jitsu (2020)

Based on a little-known 2017 comic book of the same name, the genre blending Jiu Jitsu is an easy "win" for worst Nicolas Cage comic book movie. That said, at least it features performances from Frank Grillo, Rick Yune, and Tony Jaa.

The plot is pretty much in line with Cage's direct-to-video and direct-to-streaming era. Specifically, it follows a group of ancient warriors charged with the task of staving off an alien invasion. In other words, it's the type of film that needed a substantial budget, and it didn't have one.

Ghost Rider (2007)

Cage went on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and rattled off his five favorite films of which he's been a part. Neither Ghost Rider film was one of them. It's actually pretty easy to see what Mark Steven Johnson was going for with the first Ghost Rider . After all, he'd just done attempted to do the same with Daredevil . That said, when the strategy is to mimic the best traits of more effective films e.g. X-Men and Spider-Man , a case of diminished returns is the best case scenario.

The worst case scenario is the utterly soulless Ghost Rider , which has exactly one cool shot (the Rider descending a massive building on his flaming motorcycle) and nothing else. Even Cage seems bored out of his mind, blatantly recognizing the 2007 film as the lazy cash grab it is, not his big leading man superhero project (which, really, it was). Ghost Rider 's problems are innumerable, but the most surprising problem is Cage himself. Not because his performance is of poor quality, but because he's miscast as Johnny Blaze, at least in terms of what the first film was going for. In the second? Not so much a miscast.

Astro Boy (2009)

Given how poorly 2009's Astro Boy did in theaters, it's not all that surprising the once-floated live action movie never came to fruition. The film failed to even recoup its modest $65 million budget (not high for an animated film featuring names like Freddie Highmore, Kristen Bell, Bill Nighy, Samuel L. ackson, Nathan Lane, Eugene Levy, Charlize Theron, and Cage).

In fact, the film even led to the shutdown of Imagi Animation Studios. But that's not to say the film is even of objectively poor quality; It isn't, it just falls more in line with being predictable and forgettable. But the moments between Cage's creator/father Dr. Tenma and his creation/son Astro (Highmore) are tender and come across as organic. At the very least, Astro Boy makes a good companion piece on double feature night with something like Monsters vs. Aliens , G-Force (also starring Cage), or 2014's sublime Big Hero 6 .

Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance (2011)

Is Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance a good film? Absolutely not, it's just about as broken as the first one. But, at least it has an R rating, which is an absolute necessity for the character . It also lets Cage be Cage, as if the filmmakers ( Gamer 's Neveldine and Taylor) knew that he was an asset, whereas Johnson did not.

Even still, Cage seems to know he's in a bad movie, as when he's not screaming directly into the camera he's sullenly moaning in the direction of some sand or a rock. Even still, there are things that work about the film. For one, Idris Elba is in it in fits and starts. Two, Johnny Whitworth and Ciarán Hinds make infinitely better villains than the original film's slumming-it-and-knowing-it Peter Fonda or Wes Bentley of Yellowstone fame. But, mostly, it's just good that the film goes for an R rating instead of the truncated mess that was the original film. Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance was the way to do things the first time out of the gate, particularly in terms of modest budgeting and embrace of the absurd. Had the franchise started out with Spirit of Vengeance , it stands to reason there'd be four or five similarly-budgeted Ghost Rider movies for audiences to binge. They may even star Cage, but with or without him, it stands to further reason the fourth and fifth installments would be going directly to Redbox kiosks.

Teen Titans Go! To the Movies (2018)

Before Nicolas Cage was starring as a fictional version of himself in The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent , he was poking a bit of fun at one of his past's greatest missed opportunities in Teen Titans Go! To the Movies . Specifically, the aforementioned Kevin Smith-penned, Tim Burton-directed Superman Lives .

That said, in Teen Titans Go! To the Movies he's not exactly fighting a giant mechanical Wild Wild West -style spider (as was intended for that canceled film's climax), or even clashing with Jimmy Kimmel's Batman. It's more of a cameo where he spouts paternal advice to the young Titans. Save for one it's the smallest role Cage has had in a superhero film, but that's not to say he doesn't make an impression.

The Flash (2023)

The Flash is going to go down in cinema history as noteworthy, but certainly not in the way anyone involved had intended. Not only is the film one of the decade's biggest flops or one of the biggest superhero movie flops , it's one of the biggest box office bombs, period.

As a film, though, it's more average than disastrous. Almost as if it's out of its own time (which, given the delays, it very much is). Even the fact that Michael Keaton came back as Batman feels more like a "Who cares?" than a "Finally!" When the overarching franchise is already dead, even fans of it are bound to shrug when an installment comes out after it's already been announced the whole IP is starting basically from scratch. Even had the problematic Ezra Miller not fronted the film, it would have come across as unnecessary, and it seems no amount of fan wish fulfillment can save a project released too late. So, in the end, The Flash has to settle for being the diametric opposite of Spider-Man: No Way Home .

Kick-Ass (2010)

If it weren't for one other, Matthew Vaughn's ( Kingsman: The Secret Service and its two weak follow-ups) Kick-Ass would be Cage's best film based on a pre-existing superhero IP, hands down. Everything about the film runs like clockwork, and it's allowed to do so not just via Vaughn's airtight direction but also from the tone, the intelligent script, and the perfectly-cast group of stars.

On the latter front, the biggest of the film's gets was undoubtedly Chloë Grace Mortez, whose foul-mouthed butt-kicker Hit-Girl became a cult favorite overnight (for those not already familiar with the source material). Then there's Aaron Taylor-Johnson, playing a far different (and far less competent) "super" hero than his Kraven the Hunter . And Christopher Mintz-Plasse, shedding his McLovin skin to play a character far more cruel but equally put-upon: Red Mist. Yet, the most interesting dynamic of the film isn't the friendship turned sour dynamic between Kick-Ass and Red Mist, but rather the outlandish father-daughter dynamic of Hit-Girl and the suitably named Big Daddy. And, as could be expected of Cage in a role where he's training his 12-year-old daughter to shoot guns, fire off bazookas, and slit throats, the actor has an absolute field day.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018)

It's no small feat for 2018's Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse to have been called quite possibly the best installment of its franchise released up to that point (the same of which could be said about 2023's Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse ). Among its many achievements is the best use of Cage in years.

Cage portrays one of the many variants to Miles Morales and Peter Parkers Spider-Men, called Spider-Man Noir (who is getting a live-action Amazon series ). Outside of Hailee Steinfeld's Spider-Woman, John Mulaney's Spider-Ham, and, of course, Shameik Moore's Miles Morales, Cage's Spider-Man Noir is the best Spidey of the film. It's hard for that not to be the case when it's so glaringly obvious that Cage is having the absolute time of his life in the role.

Marvel Reveals The New Ghost Rider's Secret Identity & MCU Fans Should Pay Attention

the Hood as Ghost Rider

Marvel Comics' newest Ghost Rider is one of the last villains readers would ever guess: the supervillain Parker Robbins, aka the Hood, who first appeared in 2002's "Hood" #1.

The Hood begins his journey as a petty criminal who acquires a mystical cloak that gives him a wide array of magic powers. Naturally, he uses his newfound abilities to commit more crimes and quickly rises through the ranks of major evildoers. He's taken on the Avengers and sparred with supernatural entities. Now, he will become the new Spirit of Vengeance in the upcoming "Ghost Rider: Final Vengeance" storyline.

Meanwhile, the Hood will make his debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe on the upcoming  "Ironheart" series on Disney+ , where he'll be played by Anthony Ramos. The six-episode show appears to be setting up a battle of technology and science versus magic, with Sacha Baron Cohen rumored to play Mephisto. It's even possible that the Hood's magical cloak will be powered by the Prince of Devils instead of Dormammu, as in the comics.

The Hood is gaining a great power

As seen in artist Danny Kim's Hood Ghost Rider design sheet, even when consumed by vengeance, the Hood maintains his magical red cloak, which adds an exciting pop of color to his new ensemble. Although he isn't given  Ghost Rider's Hellfire Chain , he of course takes on the trademark skull (although it's given a dark twist).

In "Ghost Rider: Final Vengeance," the Spirit of Vengeance leaves Johnny Blaze for the Hood after the latter makes a deal with the devil to rise even further as a villain. "This is what happens when the Spirit of Vengeance is stripped from Johnny Blaze and grafted on to [sic] a character who has no moral compass," writer Benjamin Percy told  Marvel . "An epic crime saga—flavored with horror—awaits readers in GHOST RIDER: FINAL VENGEANCE."

Giving the Hood such a powerful, demonic upgrade is an unexpected curveball that will undoubtedly put the rest of the Marvel Universe on notice. It's also great timing since having the villain star in his own miniseries as one of the most iconic supernatural entities is a perfect way to hype him up before he arrives in the MCU.

The Marvel Super Villain Taking Over as Ghost Rider Revealed

The hood debuts as the new ghost rider in benjamin percy and danny kim's 'ghost rider: final vengeance,' on sale in march.

Over the years, the Spirit of Vengeance has burned its way through various hosts, and this March, it’ll abandon Johnny Blaze for a new rider in GHOST RIDER: FINAL VENGEANCE !

An evolution of Benjamin Percy ’s acclaimed GHOST RIDER run, this new series will see an iconic super villain unleash hellfire as the new Ghost Rider—the criminal mastermind known as the Hood ! Armed with a demonic cloak and dark mystical abilities, Parker Robbins’ undying lust for more power and fortune has made one of the Marvel Universe’s dangerous threats.

Now with the Spirit of Vengeance claiming what’s left of his soul, there’s no stopping his bloody takeover of the criminal underworld. By the time Johnny Blaze is able to claw his way back from the abyss to reclaim the Spirit of Vengeance , it’ll be far too late!

Joining Percy will be artist Danny Kim , who delivered a terrifying showdown between Ghost Rider and the Hood in last year’s GHOST RIDER ANNUAL #1 . The rising star has designed a brand-new look for the Hood/Ghost Rider that is sure to strike fear into reader’s hearts!

"Some villains you know all too well. Doctor Doom . Thanos . Mephisto . But I find it especially fun to bring the lesser known baddies out of the shadows and give them a shot at a starring role. That's what I did with Omega Red during X LIVES OF WOLVERINE/X DEATHS OF WOLVERINE —and that's what I'm doing now with Ghost Rider," Percy explained.

"The Hood wants a taste of the big-time. And he's made a deal with the devil to help him on his way," he continued. "This is what happens when the Spirit of Vengeance is stripped from Johnny Blaze and grafted on to a character who has no moral compass. An epic crime saga—flavored with horror—awaits readers in GHOST RIDER: FINAL VENGEANCE."
