This album is amazing. It infuses that traditional heavy metal style with that sort of power metal lyrics and vocal style too. The guitar work is fantastic and all the solos are smooth and fluid. The vocals tho, are just phenomenal. Would recommend this to any metal fan, old and new. thepimpishere

Review: Phantom Spell – Immortal’s Requiem
Published by doug on september 7, 2022 september 7, 2022.

Style: Heavy Metal, Progressive Metal, Hard Rock Recommended for fans of: Iron Maiden, Rainbow, Hällas, Witchcraft Review by: Doug Country: UK Release date: 19 August, 2022
The realm of “heavy metal” is replete – perhaps even oversaturated – with subgenres, each label conveying subtle distinctions of tone and style. Phantom Spell is a new solo project of singer and guitarist Kyle McNeill and, apparently, part of the “New Wave of Traditional Heavy Metal,” a wave which is only moderately new (Wikipedia informs me it began in the faraway times of the mid-2000s) but certainly is traditional. This genre tag is Familiar Ground for McNeill as it also describes his main project Seven Sisters , but with Phantom Spell he pivots to include elements of progressive and prog-adjacent groups such as Iron Maiden , Rainbow , or Blue Öyster Cult . The product has a clean, traditional heavy metal sound with a few dashes of progressive spice throughout and a driving energy you can’t ignore.
Unsurprisingly, this album masterminded by a guitarist features some excellent guitar playing. Once the intro track wraps up, “Dawn of Mind” leaps out of the gate with an immediate taste of what you can expect out of Immortal’s Requiem . McNeill plays with a distinct contrast between the deeper and more heavily distorted tone of the backing rhythm guitars and the higher and cleaner leading melody lines with minimal distortion (be they solos or riffs carrying the melody in between vocal sections). This is not an unusual sound for practitioners of traditional heavy metal, but in McNeill’s hands it sounds epic and energetic: the opening bars of “Dawn of Mind” never fail to get me immediately hyped to listen to the rest of the album.
In between these epic moments, Immortal’s Requiem settles into a softer and more mysterious tone where the vocals typically take the forefront – and my excitement wanes a little. The guitar work still holds strong – even if it’s less in-your-face exciting – and McNeill is certainly a competent vocalist, echoing the Eric Blooms and Ronnie James Dios of yesteryear; that said, his voice doesn’t instill nearly the same energy as his guitar melodies and feels slightly strained and hollow when he reaches for high notes (an example would be the one minute mark of “Seven Sided Mirror”). The setback in energy doesn’t ruin my enjoyment of the album by any stretch, and maybe the contrast in tone is necessary in order for the peak moments to feel so lofty, but I find myself listening far more for the guitar breaks and solos than for everything in between.
I would be remiss if I didn’t praise the closing track, “Blood Becomes Sand.” In contrast to everything I just said, this song makes excellent use of the softer moments, vocals and all, to build atmosphere and ramp up to the eventual climax. It’s an excellent song that combines the best of the traditional heavy metal sound with the depth and complexity that long, progressive song structures offer. Although all of Immortal’s Requiem crafts an immersive atmosphere, “Blood Becomes Sand” perfects the feelings of mysticism and internal fears and uncertainty that serve as the album’s themes and leaves the listener satisfied but still wishing for more to consume.
Immortal’s Requiem drips with all the metal nostalgia implied by the monochrome and cross-hatched cover artwork. The music itself is a well-crafted love letter to heavy metal of old and a worthy exploration by McNeill into the wider depths of progressive music. Although the intoxicating energy of the lead guitar can’t be maintained all throughout, the softer moments add contrast to even better highlight the breakout highs, and together the contrasting moments weave a musical spell that I’m content to let entrap me.
Recommended tracks: Dawn of Mind, Blood Becomes Sand You may also like: Seven Sisters, Divine Intervention , Lightning Born Final verdict: 7/10

Immortal’s Requiem is the impressive debut full-length opus from UK progressive rock project Phantom Spell, the brainchild of one Kyle McNeill, who is also the frontman of London-based heavy metal band Seven Sisters.
This is a heart-warming affair dripping with a quintessentially British air and evoking images of majestic castle walls and secret coves as we are led into the weakening mind of a wizard. I love albums where you can’t fully pin-point its influences but become at one with its scent, like flicking through the pages of a heavily yellowed old book of spells and esoteric mystery.
Brim-full of charm and mesmeric passion, Immortal’s Requiem soothes the soul in its ability to re-imagine those Styx and Kansas records your dad used to harp on about! Sweet melodies abound throughout this calm, measured and extremely melodic record, but there are also those more jarringly complex connotations too with the bewildering brilliance of, say, ‘Seven Sided Mirror’ which has streaks of Blue Öyster Cult.
There’s so much to explore here as McNeill nods towards Thin Lizzy, Saga, Magnum et al, exploring the depths of hard rock to create a passionate but extremely comforting and rewarding opus that even steps towards New Wave Of British Heavy Metal at times, and will surely appeal to the traditional doom crowd too, even though it never goes that far.
The wistful ‘Dawn Of Mind’ features wildness within its contours yet remains calm and collected, while ‘Black Spire Curse’ is an intricate, multi-layered 70s prog coolness awash with nostalgia and a spatial grandiosity yet without ever becoming too self-indulgent. In fact, Immortal’s Requiem is one of the most pleasing examples of retro rock I’ve heard for a long time, and yet it’s so absorbing and meditative as ‘Up The Tower’ bristles with Brit rock aplomb and ‘Blood Becomes Sand’ calmly washes over the body yet with a degree of melancholy.
Vocally, McNeill has a soothing tone, more so with the lower tones, especially on the aforementioned ‘Blood Becomes Sand’ which unravels beautifully and boasts, dare I say it, an almost Oasis-trudge in patches while leaning towards what is now an expected 70s majesty.
All I can really say with an album like this is to listen to it and peel back its layers to uncover a wealth of artistry that drifts in all manner of directions, from classic Iron Maiden and Dio, to Uriah Heep and Journey, via J.R.R. Tolkien and those old Fighting Fantasy role-playing books I keep going back to. Throw the dice, turn the page… and begin.

Phantom spell – immortal’s requiem.

Genre: Prog heavy/rock Country: U.K. Label: Wizard Tower Records Year: 2022
Kyle McNeill is the mastermind behind Phantom Spell. The frontman of outerspace warlords, Seven Sisters, decided to go for a new solo project to expand his horizons. Having established his command of songcraft over several albums with the UK’s twin-guitar renegades, McNeill has decided to add a second string to his bow. After releasing “Keep On Running” single in July 2021 the stage is set for Phantom Spell’s debut album. 32 minutes of inspiring prog mentality compositions sound more than promising. Through “Immortal’s Requiem”, the band presents a spellbinding sonic journey. A journey in which fractured thoughts of a deteriorating clairvoyant are given form as cascading guitar harmonies and weaving moletronic passages. Songs like “Dawn of Mind” and “Seven Sided Mirror” effortlessly navigate shifting sonic textures with purpose and unabashed curiosity. Akin to the theatrical majesty of those dear Kansas and Yes gatefolds tucked away in record collections worldwide. “Up The Tower” comes with electrified rhythms of clear the heady smog of spell-craft and make way for a direct message. The album’s only instrumental track, “Black Spire Curse” showcases McNeill’s aforementioned guitar work perfectly. “Blood Becomes Sand” slow us down a bit making us more emotional. Lots of harmonies on vocals and heavier sorrowful riffs. Pleasant surprise is as well Rory Gallagher’s “Moonchild” cover with old school keys and a more prog approach. There were times that I was distracted from listening, I guess as a total I may have found some repeated parts, but after all its a solo project and that’s Kyle presenting something that differs to anything he had done already. A really interesting aspect of Kyles’ mindset and psychological observation throughout the plague years. Along with the baroque tones listening to the whole experiment feels like you ‘re going through a catharsis procedure after all.
