What the new Rolls-Royce Ghost will cost you in Australia

It's priced at $628,000 (plus on-road costs) in basic form and more than a million if you work the options list hard. Here's what you get for your outlay.

Although the new Ghost's appearance is broadly similar to the outgoing model, it looks markedly different – the panels are larger and there are crisp lines pressed into the metal.   James Lipman

The first example of the all-new Rolls-Royce Ghost has arrived in Australia, but local customers will have to wait until early next year for their cars.

The Ghost is a left-hand drive display car, airfreighted here to attract interest in a car priced at $628,000 (plus on-road costs) in basic form and more than a million if you work the options list hard.

Among the innovations are a Planar Suspension System, doors that can be opened as well as closed electrically, and a level of quietness the chief engineer claims couldn’t be improved on even with a fully electric drivetrain.

As well as the crisp lines in the metal, there are beautifully integrated chrome highlights and spectacular lighting, including small downlights in the famous grille.  

Jon Simms, engineering lead on the new Ghost, says an abundance of sound-proofing secreted in purpose-designed body cavities and a program to literally tune the components to the one frequency resulted in the Ghost being too quiet. His team had to dial some sounds back into it to avoid an “almost disorientating feel”, he says.

The important thing for a “Roll-Royce experience” , he tells us, is to create a low sound level that changes little when, say, you overtake a large truck at high speed. “If you pass a truck you will notice an increase in noise but actually that increase should be very subtle, so what we’ve really tried to do is get seats, airconditioning compressors, air suspension compressors, everything within the car running at the same resonant frequency. Then, in terms of inputs from outside the car, we’ve tried to make sure that nothing jumps out at you. It’s really a very fine balancing game to get that blend of serenity.”

Although the newcomer is broadly similar in appearance to the outgoing model (built from 2009 until earlier this year), it looks markedly different in the metal. The panels are larger, meaning fewer shut-lines (or panel gaps). One enormous unbroken panel takes in the windscreen pillars, the entire roof and the rear pillars and then sweeps back to the tail-lights. There are crisp lines pressed into the metal, beautifully integrated chrome highlights and spectacular lighting, including small downlights in the famous grille.

The sound system is breathtakingly good; the optional Bespoke Audio option takes advantage of chambers in the car’s lower body structure to turn the chassis into a giant subwoofer.  

The display car is the long-wheelbase derivative, with an extra 170mm of rear passenger room, taking the overall length to 5716mm. Extra cost options fitted included a cabinet for a whisky decanter and glasses, a champagne fridge with crystal flutes nestled in its lid, the Starlight Headliner (which lights up the ceiling like a night sky) and a complementary (though far from complimentary) illuminated fascia, which includes a star display on the passenger side of the dash.

Simms says the door opening and closing system had to be carefully managed to comply with various laws. The forward opening “coach doors” at the rear could previously be closed at the touch of a button. Now they can be electrically opened as well. “What happens is you pull [the interior] handle once, you allow it to return to the centre, with the idea being that then the client is able to check for any obstacles or any risks. Then you simply pull on the handle and, as long as you hold it, the door will continue to power. The moment you release it the door brake will engage.”

The doors can be closed from outside with finger pressure before they automatically lock tight into their jambs. Simms calls it a zero gravity effect. “There are no additional buttons, there’s nothing special you have to press. The client just goes to the car, operates the door and then is delighted when they find it actually assists them.”

The sound system is breathtakingly good; this car had the optional Bespoke Audio, which takes advantage of chambers in the car’s lower body structure to turn the chassis into a giant subwoofer.

An optional extra is an illuminated fascia, which includes a star display on the passenger side of the dash.  

The engine is a further development of the familiar 6.75-litre twin-turbo V12, now delivering a maximum of 420kW and 850Nm to an all-wheel drive, all-wheel steering set-up. It is enough to push the weighty Ghost (2490kg) to 100km/h in 4.8 seconds. The top speed is limited at 250km/h.

The long-wheelbase is priced at $740,000 plus options and on-roads. The version we examined, fitted with many but far from all the options, was quoted as $980K, drive away.

The car’s windscreen-mounted stereo cameras scan the road ahead and prepare the suspension for whatever is coming up.

The previous Ghost sat on a BMW 760Li platform. It now shares the “Architecture of Luxury” with the Phantom and Cullinan models . This is a unique Rolls-Royce platform, although people like Simms won’t use the term platform . They insist it is a modular aluminium space frame architecture.

Simms says the combination of the new Planar suspension, which uses an additional upper wishbone and damper on each front wheel, takes the “magic carpet ride quality” a notch higher. “As you get an impact into the suspension from the road wheel, the wishbone travels up and some of that force is taken out by it moving the wishbone on the upper wishbone. Basically it’s a very simple solution and there’s less energy transferred into the body [and] into something that the client would feel.”

This simple mechanical solution is backed up with plenty of electronics and software . For example, the car’s windscreen-mounted stereo cameras scan the road ahead and prepare the suspension for whatever is coming up.

The standard Ghost is 5546mm long and just under two metres wide, although improvements in interior room are minimal, mainly because of the soundproofing cavities, particularly around the C-pillar areas.

Simms admits the Architecture of Luxury does not include a specific space for batteries, although he says it would lend itself to future powertrain derivatives because it is completely modular.

Was he worried an illuminated grille might look a little too Disneyland? Simms says yes, and there was plenty of experimenting to find out how it could be done subtly. In the end, engineers etched the rear of the radiator vanes and recessed the LED lights so that the famous Pantheon grille didn’t become a mass of reflections.

Rear-folding picnic tables, a cabinet for a whisky decanter, a champagne fridge and a ceiling that lights up like a night sky are optional.  

A criticism of the previous car was the use of chrome-finished plastic on some of the interior controls that one might have expected to be made from metal. The justification was weight saving. This time around, Simms says everything that looks like metal is metal. “The designers really pushed from day one this idea of the purity of materials. With the open-pore wood veneers you can literally run your hand over them, feel the construction, you can feel the metal parts, the leather is just uninterrupted, no unmerited seam lines. It’s what we’ve really striven for on Ghost.”

What's new for 2024.

Rolls-Royce has been focusing on its first electric vehicle, the Spectre , so the Ghost carries over to 2024 without any significant changes to its design, features list, or powertrain.

Pricing and Which One to Buy

The Ghost is the entry-level Rolls, but what an entry. The list of standard and optional equipment is mesmerizing and long, and Rolls-Royce offers a seemingly endless list of additional features and customizations. The only question is how much you're willing to spend.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

The Ghost is powered by a 563-hp 6.7-liter V-12 that is shared with the Cullinan SUV ; Black Badge models get a boost in power to 592 hp. An eight-speed automatic handles shifting duties, and all-wheel drive is standard. According to Rolls-Royce, the Ghost is capable of hitting 60 mph in just 4.6 seconds, and we're looking forward to verifying that claim at our test track. Rolls-Royce also boasts that the Ghost offers sharp handling, pointing to its all-wheel-steering system and 50/50 weight distribution as evidence that driving satisfaction played a significant role in the car's development. The Ghost provides a peerless ride thanks to its standard adaptive suspension, which employs a road-scanning camera to help the vehicle anticipate and compensate for potholes. Of course.

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

The EPA estimates that the Ghost will return 12 mpg in the city and 19 mpg on the highway. Once we get a chance, we'll put the Ghost through our 75-mph highway fuel-economy test and update this story with the results. For more information about the Ghost's fuel economy, visit the EPA's website .

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

Like the cabin of any Rolls-Royce, the new Ghost’s is opulent, with every surface, knob, switch, and lever crafted from quality materials. Think thick carpet, finely grained leather, real wood and metal accents, and even an available headliner with tiny integrated LEDs to simulate a starlit sky. An illuminated dashboard inlay glows when the driver turns on the Ghost, adding to the starry-night ambiance. Rear-seat passengers are treated to such luxuries as massaging seats, an entertainment system, and acres of legroom. It's nothing less than expected for a car in the same class as the Bentley Flying Spur and the Mercedes-Benz Maybach S-class.

Infotainment and Connectivity

Along with providing a Wi-Fi hotspot, the Ghost features a large infotainment touchscreen with in-dash navigation. Both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto interfaces are included. A dual-screen rear-seat entertainment system allows passengers to adjust the radio, input destinations into the nav, and more. Rolls-Royce also supplies an 18-speaker Bespoke stereo system with 1300 watts of power and magnesium-ceramic speaker cones.

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

Rolls-Royce offers a host of driver-assistance features as standard on the Ghost, including adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist. Rolls-Royce has been making cars since the early 20th century , and during that time the company has built some of the most luxurious, prestigious, and expensive cars in the world. The Rolls Royce Ghost, which was first released in 2010, is one of their latest models to date. The Ghost is powered by a 6.7-liter V12 engine that produces 563 hp and 627 lb-ft of torque. Its top speed is 155 mph, and can reach 0-60 mph in just 4.6 seconds which is impressive for a sedan. SAVOUR A TRANSIENT SKY

Upon closing the doors and starting the engine, the stars in the Starlight Headliner simultaneously darken and a gleaming circle of fibre-optic lights appear, representing the totality of a solar eclipse and the bright ring that surrounds the lunar silhouette. The celestial scene lasts for precisely seven minutes and 31 seconds — the longest possible duration of a total solar eclipse. Once this time has lapsed, the headliner’s full constellation of stars is restored.

WITNESS RADIANCE

A show of brilliance, the illuminated fascia is laser-etched with dazzling stars symbolising the timeline of a total eclipse. The size and position of each star was delicately adjusted by a single designer, ensuring a mesmeric effect.

The Diamond Ring effect occurs when a solitary bead of sunlight appears around the Moon immediately before and after a total solar eclipse. The Bespoke collection clock, adorned with a brilliant-cut 0.5-carat diamond, evokes this celestial point of light. The timepiece is finished with etchings on the dark aluminium surround, exposing a bright halo of metal beneath.

CHASE AN IMMERSIVE SUNSET

During the darkest moment of a total eclipse, a mesmerising sight transpires — a twilight sky becomes visible in all directions, creating the illusion of a 360-degree sunset. This wondrous vision is mirrored across the bi-coloured seats. Artisans achieved the gradient by tinting Mandarin leather black, then applying 200,000 intricate perforations to reveal the fiery colour beneath.

A hand-painted Coachline depicts the gradual transition from sunlight to darkness as the Moon crosses the Sun’s burning path. The motif is set against a background of Lyrical Copper — a dark exterior colour enriched with powdered copper pigment. In light, the pigment reveals a dramatic iridescence, capturing the ethereal light cast by an eclipse.

RELISH RARITY

Illuminated technical fibre Treadplates denote the number of motor cars within the Private Collection. Limited to just 25 models, the collection is as rare as an eclipse itself.

Rolls-Royce Ghost Black Badge Ékleipsis Private Collection is an eclipse on wheels

• Rolls-Royce Black Badge Ghost Ékleipsis Private Collection

Demand for Rolls-Royce's Black Badge models has been high, so the brand is going further down this dimly-lit avenue with a limited-edition version of the Ghost called Ékleipsis Private Collection. The sedan features several specific astrology-inspired styling cues inside and out.

As its name implies, the Ékleipsis is a tribute to the eclipse (the one that you see in the sky, not the one built by Mitsubishi ). It's based on the Ghost Black Badge, but it's finished in a special color called Lyrical Copper that captures "the mysterious, ethereal light cast by a total solar eclipse," according to Rolls-Royce's design team. Mandarin exterior accents on the body and the brake calipers add a touch of contrast to the look, and the thin line that stretches from the front part of the fenders to the rear part of the quarter panels is applied entirely by hand.

Inside, the Ékleipsis features Rolls-Royce's signature Starlight headliner with a special animation that mimics an eclipse. When the doors close and the engine starts, the stars in the headliner darken and a specific sequence plays to replicate a full solar eclipse. We'll save you the trouble of counting them: The circle that appears consists of 940 "stars" while the background includes an additional 192 "stars." This lasts for seven minutes and 31 seconds, the longest duration of a total solar eclipse, and the standard Starlight headliner returns at the end.

Fine-tuning this feature was easier said than done. Rolls-Royce spent a year on it, and it built three complete prototypes to perfect it.

Rolls-Royce didn't stop there. The dashboard gains an analog clock whose bezel incorporates a brilliant-cut 0.5-carat diamond. Surprisingly, this is the first time that the company has integrated a gemstone into the clock's bezel. The passengers sit on two-tone leather-upholstered seats with over 200,000 perforations, and the list of standard features includes umbrellas with Mandarin piping as well as a car cover .

Production of the Rolls-Royce Black Badge Ghost Ékleipsis Private Collection is limited to 25 units globally. Pricing information hasn't been announced, but it's of little interest to us because the model was sold-out before its public unveiling. Besides, if you need to ask ...
