Most Haunted Places in Galveston, TX

Galveston has a very colorful, not to mention dramatic history. The island once served as a central point for commerce in Texas before it was decimated by a Hurricane in 1900. A large number of buildings were completely wiped out and the island never fully recovered from the disaster.

It is this massive loss that seems to have triggered many of the most well-known incidences of paranormal activity in Galveston, although there are a handful of newer tales too.

Join us in digging a little deeper into the history behind some of the most haunted places in Galveston, TX:

9. Moody Mansion

An image of the haunted Moody Mansion, Galveston TX

Stories of specific hauntings in Moody Mansion are few and far between, but there are more than a few tales of mysterious goings-on throughout the years.

Disembodied footsteps and other strange, unidentifiable noises have been reported throughout the house.

Perhaps the most notable phenomenon in Moody Mansion is the surprisingly common photographic anomalies. Pictures taken on the grounds of Moody Mansion have frequently been shown to have mysterious, blurred “guests” popping up in them. Sometimes it’s little more than a shadow in a place that ought not to have a shadow, while in others it can be something a little more defined.

8. Stewart's Mansion

Stewart's Mansion

Stewart’s Mansion was once part of Stewart Ranch which was gifted to the State of Texas in 1969 and became what is now known as Galveston Island State Park.

The mansion was not part of the gift, but it is known to be one of the most haunted properties in Galveston with several different entities tied to the property.

Many of these are linked to the location of the mansion and its significant role in Galveston history.

For example, just beyond the gates, there is a historical marker for ‘Lafitte’s Grove’ indicating the location of Jean Lafitte’s headquarters during the Battle of Three Trees between Lafitte and the Karankawa Indians in 1821.

Caretakers at Stewart’s Mansion have reported seeing apparitions of Native Americans and Pirates in the area and also hearing the sounds of cannons, muskets, cries, and screams which sound like an echo of the battle itself.

There are also reports of disembodied growls and barks often accompanied by the smell of wet dog which has been attributed to a legend regarding a pack of 12 black dogs belonging to Pirate King Jean Laffite.

Apparently, a voodoo queen performed a ritual over the pups as they were born transforming them into supernatural ‘hellhounds’ with flaming red eyes!

The voodoo queen herself has also been seen around Stewart’s Mansion dressed in dirty clothes and wearing a necklace of bones.

There have also been reports of shadow figures darting between the trees around the property. This truly is one of the most haunted places in Galveston.

7. Seawall Walmart

If there is one place that you probably did not expect to find on a list of Galveston’s most haunted locations then it is probably the local branch of Walmart.

However, the Seawall Walmart is built on the land that was once occupied by St Mary’s Orphanage and employees say that many of the children are still around!

Toys often move around the store when there are no customers around and entire pallets of toy inventory have gone missing only to reappear later.

There are also frequent reports of children laughing or crying and a couple of employees have even seen apparitions of the children.

6. The Bishop's Palace

The Bishop's Palace

The Bishop’s Palace was finished in 1893 and it is one of the few original buildings on Galveston which survived the hurricane of 1900.

According to the locals, the original owner Walter Gresham is highly protective of the property and still haunts the building.

He is most often spotted during, or just before freak weather events. Those who have seen him have described him as being in an agitated state as he paces backward and forwards across the front porch.

He seems concerned that even though Bishop’s Palace managed to survive in 1900 it might not be so lucky the next time!

5. Ashton Villa Mansion

Ashton Villa Mansion

High on the list of Texas haunted houses , Ashton Villa Mansion was built between 1861 and 1865 by wealthy Texan businessman James Brown who was keen to show people just how well off he was!

The 3 story mansion is fit for royalty and was likely the first home in Texas to be constructed in all brick.

The house was put to use as a hospital during the Civil War and spent time under the control of both the Union and the Confederates at one time or another.

These days, the property is considered to be one of the most haunted places in Galveston.

Among the reports of paranormal activity, there are sightings of a beautiful blonde woman wearing a turquoise colored evening gown and holding an ornate fan. This is believed to be an apparition of James Brown’s eldest daughter Miss Bettie Brown.

Other paranormal activity around the house includes ceiling fans turning on, the alarm going off for no reason and phantom piano music.

The piano music is attributed to Bettie’s younger sister Tilly Brown. Staff have also reported seeing civil war era soldiers around the property from time to time.

4. Van Alstyne House

Van Alstyne House

Van Alstyne House was built in 1891 and it is nicknamed ‘The Gingerbread House’ because of its distinctive appearance.

For many years the building housed an antique store, but the owners eventually had to abandon it because of an onslaught of paranormal activity.

Just some of the activity that they reported over the years included the alarms going off in the night for no apparent reason, tables being completely flipped over, a toy truck rolling towards a visiting police officer and a disembodied voice threatening a visitor that he was going to die if he did not leave immediately!

3. Maison Rouge

Maison Rouge

In his day, the pirate king Jean Lafitte is said to have ruled Galveston with an iron fist and apparently, he buried the treasure somewhere on the island.

This is why you will find the area where Maison Rouge once stood completely fenced off. There were too many treasure hunters coming to dig up the property in search of his loot!

The foundations that are visible there are not, in fact, those belonging to Maison Rouge, but rather a house known as 12 Gables which was built there much later by Captain Hendricks.

Over the years there have been many reports of unexplained noises coming from the ruins. These range from the sound of men arguing with one another to the sounds of some kind of party. Whenever witnesses get close the noise stops abruptly.

There have also been reports of some strange light anomalies and little balls of bright blue, red, white and yellow floating around the ruins of Maison Rouge.

These seem to linger in the air before moving quickly across the yard and up what would have been the front stairs of the house!

There have even been reports of a shadow figure moving between the ruins. This certainly is one of the most haunted buildings in Galveston!

2. The Hotel Galvez STAY HERE

The Hotel Galvez

The Hotel Galvez is apparently the oldest hotel on the island and it just so happens to be one of the most haunted places in Galveston too.

In particular, room number 505 is a hotbed of paranormal activity and very few guests have managed to last the entire night in the room due to the uneasy feeling they experience.

People tend to feel very uncomfortable in the room and they have described smelling the unexplained scent of gardenias in the room as well.

There are said to be a number of different spirits haunting the hotel including one known as ‘the lovelorn lady’.

She is apparently the ghost of a bride to be named Audra who was staying at the Hotel Galvez while her intended was off at sea. She liked to take the elevator up to the 8 th floor where she could climb out onto one of the turrets on the roof and watch for her love’s ship returning.

One night following a terrible storm, Audra heard that his ship had been lost and promptly hung herself in room 501. Ironically, her fiancé arrived home safe only to learn of her death.

She is now said to haunt the room in which she died. Guests have had doors slam, lights malfunction and seen strange lights in the room.

Audra is by no means the only ghost haunting this hotel, there are also many reports of the apparition of a nun called Sister Katherine who haunts the west wing of the hotel, a little girl in a period dress who plays in the lobby and a male spirit who harasses ladies in the first-floor bathroom!

1. The Tremont House Hotel BOOK A ROOM

The Tremont House Hotel

The Tremont House Hotel is one of two Tremont brand hotels on the island of Galveston. It was opened in 1872 and welcomed many celebrity guests including several US presidents, Buffalo Bill Cody, and Anna Pavlova among others.

It served as a shelter for hundreds of people during the great hurricane of 1900. However, it was closed in 1928 and quickly fell into disrepair leading to its demolition.

A new Tremont House now stands in its place and it boasts 119 rooms taking up one and a half blocks! It also boasts a number of spirits who call the Tremont home.

One of the most commonly spotted ghosts here is a Civil War soldier who usually haunts the first-floor lobby, bar, dining room and office. He marches back and forth as though standing guard.

There is also said to be another male spirit in the hotel who goes by the name of The Lucky Man or just ‘Sam’.

He is apparently a salesman who walks with a limp who was murdered as he slept after winning big gambling that night. He is blamed for most of the paranormal occurrences on the fourth floor.

Other spirits said to be in the hotel include a little boy named Jimmy, a ghost who loves to scatter guests clothing around and a number of storm victims!

Galveston's original haunted mansion watched over by gregarious ghost

Posted: October 20, 2023 | Last updated: October 20, 2023

Besides the Hotel Galvez , Ashton Villa usually takes pride of place on the roll call of Galveston’s most haunted structures. In fact, the Italianate Broadway mansion is among the island’s most historic buildings, period. Any ghostly activity might be gilding the lily, as it were, but does help brighten the story of a place that otherwise has more than its fair share of karmic baggage.

Notable for its cast-iron galleries, the three-story house was built in 1859 by James M. Brown, a New York transplant who by then owned the largest hardware concern west of the Mississippi River. Of his five children, daughters Rebecca (“Bettie”) and Mathilda (“Tillie”) are said to linger on the property, each looking after the property in her own unique way.

The younger of the two, Tillie married at nineteen to a man who turned out out be a violent, abusive alcoholic. Following her father’s death in 1895, she moved back into the house and frequently entertained her companions by playing the piano. For years, passersby have reported hearing Tillie’s ghostly recitals while out for an evening stroll along Broadway or 24th Street.

It’s Bettie, however, who has allegedly become Ashton Villa’s most passionate steward. In life, the hardware heiress was a talented artist and outspoken personality who was often literally the talk of the town, frequently spotted tooling around the island in the family automobile absent any male company. She also took care of her own by helping Tillie obtain a divorce, almost unheard of in late 19th-century Texas.

“She kind of ran her own life,” said local historian Kathleen Shanahan Maca, author of the 2016 book “Ghosts of Galveston.” She was ahead of her time as far as operating as a single female on her own with no chaperones. She would have been a real hoot to know in person.”

After being heavily damaged by Hurricane Ike, Ashton Villa — now owned by Galveston Historical Foundation — was closed to public tours, though it remains available for weddings, recitals, and other private events. In its days as a house museum, staff reported seeing a woman matching Bettie’s description on the main staircase or in the second-floor hallway, somewhere she could keep an eye on her possessions — an activity she has apparently continued to this day.

“The docents would run around and tidy things before a tour group would come in,” Maca said. “They would straighten the bedding on Miss Bettie's bed, and when they would come up the stairs with the tour, it would look like there had been somebody sitting there; there would be a dent on the bed as if somebody had sat down.

“I was actually there the other day for an event and I ran upstairs,” she added. “Sure enough, you just can't keep that bedspread straightened because she's just sitting there.”

Indirectly, Ashton Villa has also had an much greater effect on Galveston’s ghost trade than many realize. It was here, Spooky Galveston ’s Gin Keel told Chron recently, that Dash Beardsley once spied Bettie in an upstairs window. His curiosity piqued, he began digging into the island’s haunted past and soon thereafter founded  Ghost Tours of Galveston — pioneering a tourist activity which Keel and others now fear may have become too popular for its own good .

After more than a quarter-century of leading ghost tours down the Strand in his signature trenchcoat, Beardsley has now retired, selling his company to Keel earlier this year. But if he hadn’t seen Bettie peeking out of an Ashton Villa window all those years ago, who knows how things might have turned out?

Finally, the mansion also played a leading role in a much different chapter of Galveston’s history. Not long after the all-brick structure was finished — not by Brown himself, a former brickmason, but by slaves —the owner gave the house to the Confederate army for use as its headquarters during the Civil War, at least until Union troops temporarily took over the island following the first Battle of Galveston in late 1862. It was also used as a field hospital during that time, Maca notes in her book.

The Confederates wrested control again months later, and held the island until the war ended. On June 19, 1865, Ashton Villa’s second-floor balcony became one of the locations from which Union army commander Gen. Gordon Granger read aloud General Order No. 3, informing the enslaved peoples of Texas of their freedom — a day now enshrined as Juneteenth.

Thus a building which once symbolized Confederate oppression became the opposite, noted writer Sean Joyner in a June 2021 essay for the architectural site Archinect. (GHF’s ongoing Juneteenth exhibition, “…And Still We Rise,” is located in the mansion’s former carriage house.)

“The once oppressive symbol of enslavement, in a moment, became the center stage that hosted the proclamation of the reversal of that enslavement,” he wrote, “and has since come to symbolize the liberation of all enslaved people.”

How guest reviews work

Each review score is between 1 and 10. To get the overall score, we add up all the review scores and divide that total by the number of review scores we received. Guests can also give separate subscores in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value, and free WiFi. Guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently – there’s no direct link between them.

You can review an accommodation that you booked through our platform if you stayed there, or if you got to the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, contact our Customer Service team.

We have people and automated systems that specialize in detecting fake reviews submitted to our platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.

Anyone who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team so that our fraud team can investigate.

Ideally, we'd publish every review we get, positive and negative. However, we won’t display any reviews that include or refer to (among other things):

  • Politically sensitive comments
  • Promotional content
  • Illegal activities
  • Personal or sensitive info (e.g. emails, phone numbers, credit card info)
  • Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
  • Spam and fake content
  • Animal cruelty
  • Impersonation (i.e. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
  • Any violation of our review guidelines.

To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out. We may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old, or if the accommodation has a change of ownership.

An accommodation can reply to a review.

When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (e.g. language, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). You can sort and/or filter them by time of year, review score, and more.

Sometimes we show external review scores from other well-known travel websites, but make it clear when we do this.

All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.

Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and other similar details.

Galveston Experiences for History & Military Buffs

Steeped in American and Texas history, Galveston Island offers veterans and history buffs alike a chance to discover remnants of its military significance.

From Texas’s own fight for independence to the wars of the 20th and 21st centuries, the contributions of the men and women from Galveston County to the great state of Texas and the country cannot be understated.

Check out the Galveston Naval Museum at Seawolf Park for a quick brush-up on naval history. Here, you can take a self-guided tour through the USS Cavalla Submarine & USS Stewart Destroyer Escort .

The USS Cavalla Gato-class fleet submarine was commissioned in February 1944 by the Electric Boat Company and is known for sinking Shokaku, a 30,000-ton aircraft carrier and Pearl Harbor veteran.

Alongside the USS Cavalla at Seawolf Park lies the USS Stewart, one of only two surviving destroyer escorts in the country. You’ll have a chance to examine Stewart’s artillery and even peer through grates with views into the engine room.

Coming with a large group? Sleepover packages are available that allow you to bunk in the same quarters as sailors from over 75 years ago. To learn more about the Galveston Naval Museum, click here .

selma boat

Steel shortages during World War I led the United States to build experimental concrete ships, the largest of which was the SS Selma. Today, the ship is partially submerged in Galveston Bay. Built in Mobile, Alabama, the ship was launched the same day Germany signed the Treaty of Versailles, officially ending World War I. As a result, the 7,500-ton ship never served during the war but instead was placed into service as an oil tanker in the Gulf of Mexico.

If exploring the ship channel by boat, pack a fishing pole as it is a very popular fishing spot. The S.S. SELMA is visible from Seawolf Park so be sure to add it to your must-see list while exploring the park’s other marine treasures.

Night view of Battleship USS Texas Dry dock in Galveston TX

On August 31, 2022, Battleship Texas made her way from San Jacinto to Galveston to undergo extensive repairs. For the next year, the 110-year-old USS Texas Battleship will be drydocked in Galveston, giving island visitors a rare opportunity to marvel at her glory. Here are some of the best ways to catch a glimpse of the USS Texas during your visit to Galveston Island.

Take the Juneteenth Freedom Walk

The freedom walk tour is offered year-round and transports visitors back to June 19, 1865. Re-trace the steps of General Gordon Granger, union soldiers and the U.S.-colored troops as they spread the news of freedom to enslaved African Americans two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed.

The walk is available as a self-guided tour , online virtual tour or with the download of an app ( Android or Apple ). The immersive app experience comes with virtual reality videos that go in-depth into the history of each location.

San Luis Resort and Fort Crockett Park

In Galveston, even the island’s luxury resorts have interesting stories to tell. The San Luis Resort owes its breathtaking view of the Gulf of Mexico to the military bunker on which it is built. The resort’s foundation was built on top of Fort Crockett, a former government reservation originally built as a defense installation to protect the city and harbor of Galveston.

Fort Crockett’s four batteries are still visible today, one of them is home to a public park located on Seawall Boulevard across from the San Luis Resort. An interesting quick stop, bring your camera and plan on spending about 15 minutes taking in the view!

Military Monuments

Etched into the zeitgeist forever is the phrase, “Everything’s Bigger in Texas.” Texans (especially Galvestonians) are famously proud of their state’s and nation’s military history. Galveston has a plethora of places to honor the fallen ranging from large extravagant monuments to subtle nods to military heroes.

san luis resort galveston haunted

A 74 feet tall monument was the first to honor the heroes of the Texas Revolution towers in the middle of Broadway Avenue—a major thoroughfare on the island. The Texas Heroes Monument features four columns depicting patriotism, courage, honor and devotion adorned with a 22 feet tall statue called “Lady Victory” perched on top, with her outstretched arm pointing in the direction of the Battle of San Jacinto.

The monument was unveiled on San Jacinto Day back in 1900 and was commissioned by Galveston philanthropist Henry Rosenberg. A great place to view the monument is across the street at the southeast corner of 25th Street and Broadway at the Texas Heroes Monument Square.

Located in the median of Broadway Avenue and 23rd in Galveston, Texas—this monument honors all World War II veterans and somberly displays the names of Galveston County service members who “Gave All” in defense of their country. This is an easy spot to drive by on the way to the Historic Downtown District of Galveston.

A Korean War memorial installed at One Moody Plaza features a monument of a lone soldier carrying an M1 Garand rifle and black polished granite panels memorializing the names of 52 men from Galveston who served and died during the Korean War. The monument is walkable from the Historic Downtown District.

The Vietnam Memorial for Deceased Veterans of Galveston County, Texas at Moody Gardens contains twenty-five black marble pylons with each face containing the name, rank, service, date of birth and date of death in Vietnam. The pylons are planted into the ground like the sands of Galveston Island and the Gulf of Mexico along with the Texas, American, and Missing in Action Flags.

Notable Postoffice Street Memorials

While exploring downtown, be sure to stop by Post Office Street. Memorialized on the corner near where he once played Taps every evening, is a bronze statue of Marine Corps veteran Guy Taylor. Taylor served in the Korean War and was credited with saving the lives of two fellow service members in battle. He passed away in 2017 but a statue stands in his honor. Some nights at sunset if you’re lucky you will hear someone pick up the bugle and carry on the tradition in Taylor’s honor.

san luis resort galveston haunted

Also located on the corner of 21st and Post Office Street is a sidewalk mural that depicts different branches of service. The mural features 8-foot-by-8-foot stripes honoring the U.S. Army, U.S. Navy, U.S. Marine Corps, U.S. Air Force and U.S. Coast Guard.

Connect with other Veterans

Galveston’s connection to military history goes beyond historical sites, it is also home to many veterans and veteran’s organizations that open their doors to more than just prior and active service members. Stop by the American Legion or Veterans of Foreign Wars after your day of touring Galveston’s military history for food, drinks and camaraderie. The VFW hosts legendary Tuesday burger nights and Friday steak nights. Both the VFW and the American Legion boast some of the cheapest drinks on the island.
