song about ghost truck driver

Trucker Urban Legends and Superstitions

Anyone who has met a truck driver knows they are storytellers, and how could they not when they've spent so much time out in the world? It is only common sense that there are a few stories that have been passed on from driver to driver and have become famous within the community. Some are spooky, others are stories of caution, here are the most Common Trucker Urban Legends and Superstitions.

Common Trucker Superstitions

Truckers all vary in amount of superstitions, but these are the most popular.

  • Hold your breath when passing a cemetery. If you breathe in spirits, they can possess you.
  • Lift your feet when driving over a railroad. It's said that you can never find love if you don't.
  • Trucks must be a female, just like sailors and their boats to keep them safe.
  • Don't drive with a $50 bill. Joe Weatherly, NASCAR driver on his last drive crashed and died, and when he was pulled out of the car, there were 2 $50 bills in his wallet.
  • Don't cross a highway when looking for a place to stop; bad luck will come.
  • Don't drive in the left lane, you'll be the first one to meet a driver on the other side of the road.
  • When you reach a destination, pat the dash and thank your truck for a job well-done and she'll keep running.
  • When going through a yellow light, hit the roof for good luck.
  • Hold your breath when going through a tunnel, crossing a state line, or passing a cemetery for good luck.
  • Lucky charms ; many drivers have something hanging from their rearview mirrors.
  • Never haul empty ; many flatbed truckers will tie down child's toys to their trailers because hauling empty is bad luck.

Urban Legends

The Devil's Highway

Route 666: The Devil's Highway

This mostly abandoned stretch of road spans nearly 200 miles and it has earned its name as ‘The Devil’s Highway’. The name originates from when the highway was established back in 1926. It was the 6th branch of Route 66, and runs from Monticello, Utah and ends in Gallup, New Mexico. A multitude of unexplained phenomenon has occurred throughout the history of this road, ranging from the paranormal to disappearances and deaths. Statistically, the accidents and fatalities on Route666 are abnormally high and many believed that once you travelled on this road, you were cursed.  In 2003, due to many complaints of the connotation with ‘The Mark of the Beast’ the highway was renamed to highway491. During the time it was referred to as Route 666 , each and every single accident and death was reflected as a situation that occurred because of the evil that was rumored to reside on and around this stretch of road.

A widely known story of the unexplained phenomenon that occurs on this highway is that of the Black Sedan, nicknamed Satan's Sedan. According to the story, once the sun goes down, a pair of headlights will shine behind the driver. The car gains speed and reaches the driver and remains dangerously close to them. Some witnesses said they pulled over to let them pass, while others have seen it speeding past them. Other stories that have been reported numerous times are The Hounds of Hell , an Evil Spirit of the Semi Truck, the Pale Spirit, and Skin Walkers .

Other instances that are said to have happened along this stretch is mysterious disappearances and time loss. A few reports have claimed that some drivers who travel this road have disappeared and then reappeared several hours or even days later. Others have reported that their journey down the road takes longer than expected, while others have simply vanished without a trace. None of the witnesses recall the events that have happened over their disappearances, leaving many wondering what truly happened.

The Vanishing Hitchhiker

Throughout history there has been many similar reports of passengers disappearing in cars without explanation, but it wasn't until 1979 that one story gained international attention. On a late October evening in 1979, resident of Dunstable (United Kingdom) Roy Fulton stopped on the side of the road to offer a ride to a young man. The young man hopped inside Fulton's truck, but didn't say anything. Fulton asked where he wanted to go and he just pointed down the road. So they drive down the road in silence for some time until Fulton decided to offer the young man a cigarette. When he bent down to retrieve the cigarette, the boy vanished and left the driver shaken. He pulled off to the side and checked all over his truck, but the young man couldn't be found. This story "was [proved] to be one of the most chilling and convincing paranormal encounters of modern times". ‍

song about ghost truck driver

Phantom 309

This story is a true story rather than an urban legend. Phantom 309 became popularized when Red Sovine released the song of the same name in 1967. The song is about a ghost truck driver named 'Big Joe', who picks up a hitchhiker, gives him a dime for some coffee on him, and drops him off at a local diner down the road. The hitchhiker goes inside and tells the waitress that Big Joe sent him, where everyone goes silent. They tell the hitchhiker of the story of how Big Joe sacrificed himself to save a school bus full of children. It isn't well known though that the song is based off of an actual event.

On January 29, 1963, a trucker named John William 'Pete' Trudelle was driving a tanker to the Chelsea River Bulk Petroleum Facility north of Boston. He turned around now having 4,600 gallons of gasoline and heading to Keene, New Hampshire. He went on Route 1, but the Route 1 and Route 129 intersection is notorious for being dangerous. He went up a hill which was under a bridge, but down the road further there is a dip that is hidden from oncoming drivers. At this dip, there was a car parked waiting for a school bus to pick up children. Trudelle wouldn't be able to stop, so instead of crashing and possibly killing the children and driver, Trudelle crashed the tanker into the bridge. He was unable to escape the cap before the 4,600 gallons of gas exploded. The children and the driver of the school bus were able to escape and get to safety. Trudelle made the hard decision to sacrifice himself in order to save others.

The legend of Phantom 309 is based off of Trudelle and his sacrifice. There is a memorial of the event and Trudelle in the Iowa 80 Trucking Museum .

Other Urban Legends

The black dog.

There are many reports of black dogs on the sides of highways across the U.S. It is said that black dogs appear as a warning to drivers. If a driver is starting to doze off while driving, a black dog will appear on the side of the road. Some stories say the dog disappears and others say they just stand on the side of the road. The legend goes it that a driver was driving down the road with his dog but he dozed off and ended up in a fatal crash. Now the dog haunts weary drivers and alerts them that danger is to come.

‍ This story’s origin in unknown, but it starts with a young woman stopping at a gas station at night where she runs inside for something. She gets in her car and pulls back onto the highway. A truck driver that was also at the gas station follows her. As she’s driving, she notices that the driver keeps flashing his high beams at her. This continues for quite some time and the woman grows worried that she’s being followed. Finally having enough, the woman pulls off at another gas station and runs inside to tell somebody. The trucker had followed her as well and follows her inside. Worried, she demands to know what the man wants. That’s when the driver says, ‘There’s a killer in your backseat. Every time he raised his weapon up, I flashed my lights and he would crouch back down’. That’s when the woman looks into the backseat of her car and sees a man lying in wait. This story is more of a wives' tale, and shows that there are good Samaritan drivers on the road as well.

‍ Cemeteries give most people the creeps, and for good reason. A common superstition around cemeteries is to hold your breath when passing and not standing on headstones. This story however talks about a driver who pulls off to the side of the road for a night’s sleep. The driver went through a small town and on the outskirts, he passed by a cemetery. He finds a spot and goes to sleep without problem, but is awoken at 3 a.m. by a loud bang. The trucker looks around, but nothing is inside the truck. Then another bang hits the driver side door. The driver looks out the window and sees nothing. Suddenly the whole truck starts to shake violently. The shaking subsides, and the driver thinks he’s in the clear until he hears the doors unlock. The passenger door opens and he hears something climb in. The cab lights turn on and when the driver looks in front of the seat, nobody’s there.

There are many stories that drivers have told. Anything from the paranormal to the extraterrestrial, drivers have seen and been through a lot, and shared their experiences.

truck driving songs

Are you ready for a road trip?

Even if you’re all packed up and your jacked up truck is in top shape, you’re never quite ready for the road without some great music to keep you company.

Some of the most iconic songs written in the 20th century were tributes to the road. Many such songs can get a chuckle out of the listener, too. Here are 7 funny truck driving songs to round off the perfect road trip playlist.

1. Willie Nelson – On the Road Again

Put this song at the top of your playlist. Why not? It’s the perfect, upbeat ode to the road.

With its twangy guitars and its simple, addictive melody, this song is the perfect tune to drive off to. “On the Road Again” seems like an old-timey work of art. But it was actually written in the late 1970s and released by Willie Nelson in 1980. The song was featured as a soundtrack in Nelson’s film entitled Honeysuckle Rose.

In the movie, Nelson played an aging musician, and the song told his love of being on tour. This track was in the top 10 of Nelson’s all-time country hits, and it reached the 20th spot on the Billboard Hot 100. It was also successfully covered by other country veterans.

2. Ronnie Milsep – Prisoner Of the Highway

Another truck driving song that’s sure to bring a smile to your face is “Prisoner Of the Highway.” Whether your a professional trucker or just on the road for fun, you’ll want to roll those windows down, blast the tune and zoom down the highway with a grin on your face.

With a catchy chorus and references to the trucker’s mindset, this old tune can help you celebrate the wonders of the road. This version of the song features a funky 80’s beat.

It’s a cross between a country tune and a pop hit of the synth decade. The original version was recorded by Ronnie Milsep, and it featured a sound that more closely resembles classic country.

3. Del Reeves – Looking At The World Through A Windshield

If your love for the road is genuine, this old tune by Del Reeves is a great addition to your road trip playlist. ”

“Looking At The World Through A Windshield” earned its place as a classic country tune, judging by the many artists who covered it.

The song tells of a little boy who follows in his father’s footsteps as a trucker. It’s fast-paced country twang is reminiscent of songs by the likes of Johnny Cash. The lyrics will put you right in the center of a trucker’s lifestyle as you drive along.

4. Grateful Dead – Truckin

If you’re an eclectic music listener, you’ll love the somewhat obscure trucking song by the Grateful Dead. You don’t have to be a total Deadhead to enjoy this rockabilly tune.

Though this song is not “funny” per se, it’s one of those truck driving songs whose swinging tempo and go-with-the-flow chorus can make you crack a smile. Released at the dawn of the 70’s, “Truckin'” pays homage to the pastime of driving and the vehicle itself.

Whether you’re upgrading your truck with this product or some other one, or you’re well on your way across the country, this track will fit right into your trucking soundtrack.

5. C.W. McCall – Convoy

The fact that “Convoy” is attributed to and sung by a fictional character from a movie should be enough to peak your interest and provoke a chuckle. But in case it doesn’t, listen to the song itself and see if it’s not a sure hit for your custom playlist.

The idea for this song is rooted in protest . In the 1970s the federal regulations on gasoline and the road weren’t friendly to the trucking industry.

Hence, the song “Convoy,” (as well as the film with the same title) told a story of truckers banding together and driving in a line against the unfavorable regulations.

Very few protest songs evoke a feel-good mood in its listeners. Still, the song’s display of comradery among truckers combined with the cryptic trucking vernacular is enough to make a general audience laugh.

6. Weird Al Yankovic – Driving A Truck With My High Heels On

For a real belly laugh, add this song to your road trip playlist. “Driving A Truck With My High Heels On” is the funniest of all the truck driving songs listed here. It’s a great bit of deadpan satire.

You can’t help but laugh out loud when you hear Weird Al’s deep, macho-cowboy baritone booming to a classic country beat while singing about high heels, manicures, mascara, and crotchless panties.

The idea behind the song is to give the impression that the manly man driving the eighteen-wheeler enjoys the trappings of a feminine existence. In any case, Weird Al is consistent with his awesome quality of satire, and this song lives up to the hype.

7. Red Sovine – Six Days On The Road

How do you feel when you’re almost finished with your road trip?

You’re probably exhausted and itching to come home, but your love for the road is still strong. If so, “Six Days On The Road” captures this sentiment perfectly.

Over an uptempo country sound, Red Sovine sings the story of an old trucker driving an even older truck. He can’t wait to come home to his wife, his bed, and hopefully a homecooked meal. His reference to speeding along the road police-be-damned is hilarious.

If you’ve been on the road for a while, this tune will make perfect sense to you, though your truck is probably nowhere near the worse for wear like the one driven by the narrator. Tack this tune to the end of your playlist for something to crack up about during the home stretch.

Top 30 Trucking Songs – Best Tunes For the Open Road

Updated February 24th, 2022

song about ghost truck driver

Great trucking songs, just like wine served with a great meal, can make your driving experience far much better and memorable.

Maybe you could be hauling a heavy load through the worst weather conditions you’ve seen in months.

Icy roads and foggy weather makes everything just seems bleak.

TOP 30 TRUCK DRIVING SONGS

But as soon as you hear that favourite truck driving song, it’s almost like the music is talking telling you not to back down!

Or maybe it could be one of those days you just feel good after drinking a cup of coffee with your windows rolled down while you sing at the top of your lungs.

Seriously, listening to music while driving your truck can keep you awake and alert on the road.

We polled truck drivers and came up with a list of the top 30 truck driving songs professional drivers can relate to on the road.

They all talk about everything you’ve probably experienced as a truck driver:

  • from a heartbreak
  • to making new friends in different states
  • to your truck breaking down in the middle of nowhere
  • to taking 40 acres to turn that rig around!

Let’s get down to it.

Freightliner Cabover

Top 10 Albums – Truck Driving Songs

Before we get into the songs, we have to check out some of the trucker albums available.

Actually, they’re very few and rare to find.

However, some artists have dedicated entire album songs to truck drivers. On the other hand, some albums are available as a collection of songs recorded by different artists that cover truck driving themes.

Keep in mind that most of the top 30 truck driving songs we’ve included in this article are available in the albums we’ve mentioned.

The White Knight – Cledus Haggard and the Citizen Band

song about ghost truck driver

After the success of the “White Knight” in the Billboard country charts, the group behind it decided to make a full album to capitalize on the CB craze.

Heck, they even made a song titled “CB Lingo Dictionary” for the album. Other songs in the album include:

  • Kentucky Moonrunner
  • Who We Got in the End
  • Jaw Jacking

The cool thing is, most of the songs on the album are written from the perspective of different narrators who are talking on the CB radio .

Truckers Jukebox

song about ghost truck driver

This is an album with a collection of classic trucking songs from back in the days.

It features trucking songs like

  • Truck Driving Man
  • Moving On Roll On (Eighteen Wheeler)
  • Roll On Big Mama
  • East Bound and Down
  • I’m a Truck
  • and Looking at the World Through a Windshield

plus, many more classics.

Road Music: 23 Truckin Hits

song about ghost truck driver

This is a collection album with a playlist of some of the best 23 trucking hits of the 1960s and 70s.

From the greats like Dave Dudley, Red Sovine to Jerry Reed.

The album is available in both Audio CD or cassette. (Is there REALLY such thing as a cassette player nowadays?)

Truck Drivin’ Son-Of-A-Gun: Dave Dudley

song about ghost truck driver

Dave Dudley was one of the greatest country trucker singers of all time.

What makes this album special is that it’s very difficult to find the songs Dave recorded when he was signed to Mercury Records in the 1960s and 70s.

Some of those songs in this album include:

  • T rucker’s Prayer
  • There Ain’t No Easy Run
  • Keep on Trucking
  • Two Six Packs Away
  • One More Mile
  • and Listen Betty I’m Singing Your Song .
  • Of course, we can’t forget Truck Driving Son of a Gun !

Smokey & The Bandit, Soundtrack I And II

song about ghost truck driver

If you are a fan of the trucker movie, Smokie & The Bandit, this album includes all the soundtracks featured in the film.

Of course, some of the classic trucker hits in this collection include Texas Bound and Flying and East Bound and Down .

For the rest of the songs in the album, you can bet you won’t find them elsewhere.

Trucker Classics: Dave Dudley

song about ghost truck driver

This is another Dave Dudley collection with different songs than the ones featured in Truck Driving Son of a Gun album.

To put it into perspective, some of the songs in the track listing include

  • Freightliner Fever
  • Me and Ol’ CB
  • How Fast Them Trucks Can Go
  • Girl on the Billboard
  • and Six Days on the Road.

The Road Hammers

song about ghost truck driver

For the folks unfamiliar with The Road Hammers, they’re a Canadian country rock music group that is inspired by the 1960s and 70s truckers’ popular songs.

In trying to keep up that spirit alive, they released an album with remakes of the old classic trucker songs.

Besides the most popular song of the album ( I’m a road hammer ), the remakes include Keep on Trucking, Nashville Bound, Willin, Eastbound and Down and Girl on the Billboard.

Brothers of The Highway: Tony Justice

song about ghost truck driver

Named after his popular hit song, Brothers of the Highway , is one of the modern albums released in the past decade that features truck driving songs.

Sure, we wouldn’t call it a classic album like the ones released by Dave Dudley and Cledus Haggard back in the 60s and 70s .

But it’s worth a listen if you want something recent.

Some of the notable songs in the playlist include Highway Junkie, Trucker’s Last Letter, We Drive Trucks, and Hauling Ass.

Red Sovine – 20 All-Time Greatest Hits

song about ghost truck driver

Besides Dade Dudley, Red Sovine was another Country singer back in the 60s and 70s who made songs for truck drivers.

Technically, all the songs in this album are not trucker songs, but it includes some of the old classics like Teddy Bear, Phantom 309, Giddy Up Go, and Little Joe.

Strictly Trucking

song about ghost truck driver

As the name suggests, this is a strictly trucking collection album with some of the best classics like

  • Give Me 40 Acres
  • I’m a Truck
  • There is a Big Wheel
  • 6 Days on the Road
  • King of the Road,
  • and Truck Driving Outlaw.

1982 R Model Mack

Classic Trucking Songs

1. 18 wheels and a dozen roses: kathy mattea .

Back in the late 80s and early 90s during the golden era of country music, this song was in almost every truck driver’s playlist; it was the number 1 song in the country charts back in 1988.

Written and performed by Kathy Mattea, it talks about a truck driver who is looking forward to retirement and spending the rest of his days with a loved one.

This is a classic trucking song that can be played not just on the road but also in a memorial service for a departed truck driver.

2. On the Road Again: Willie Nelson

In the South Park episode “Kenny Dies”, a truck driver sings along to this song before he encounters a deer on the road.

Arguably, “On the Road Again” is one of Willie Nelson’s most popular songs, considering that it topped the charts in the 80’s and even won him a Grammy award.

3. Eastbound and Down: Jerry Reed

“Eastbound and Down” song was the anthem song by one of the best truck driving movies of all time; “Smokey and the Bandit”.

If you watched the movie as a kid and grew up to be a truck driver, this song brings backs an old school nostalgic feeling to the good old days.

Custom Peterbilt 359 Rig

4. Driving My Life Away: Eddie Rabbitt

Back in 1980, this song peaked at number 1 on the Billboard Country charts.

Eddie Rabbitt talks about some of the things that truck drivers can relate to on this song.

You know, like driving on a rainy night while the midnight headlights are blinding you?

5. Kansas City: Wilbert Harrison

Here is a cool thing about this song; it has over 300 versions.

However, the most popular remains the version recorded by Wilbert Harrison.

Even for a song written in the 1950s, “Kansas City” remains a classic truck driving song.

6. Truck Driving Man: Buck Owen

Just like the previous song, there are so many versions of this song, albeit the most popular versions are the ones recorded by Buck Owen and Boxcar Willie.

The beat and tempo of the 2 songs are different but the lyrics are the same. Hence it begs the question; which is the best version?

Old Needlenose Kenworth Green Custom Sleeper Berth

7. Movin On: Merle Haggard

Moving on was the single off Merle Haggard’s album, “Keep Moving On”.

Most people don’t know this (but old school truckers do), but it was inspired by NBC TV show (Movin’ On) about two truck drivers traveling across America and helping out friends in different states.

8. I’ve Been Everywhere: Johnny Cash

If you’re a truck driver who has been in almost every city and town in North America, this song relates to your experience.

The one thing that bugs most conspiracy theorists though; why did Johnny Cash say “I’m a killer” in the song? Well, don’t read too much into the poetry, it’s never that serious.

9. Six Days on the Road: Dave Dudley

This song was originally written by Earl Green and made popular by Dave Dudley when it reached number 2 on the Billboard Country songs.

Sawyer Brown later recorded his version in 1997, but let’s be honest, the one done by Dave Dudley was the best and original version.

1980 W900A Kenworth

10. Convoy: C. W. McCall

“Convoy” is a favourite trucker classic that tells a story about a trucker rebellion from the East Coast to the West Coast,.

They talk on a CB radio using slang you probably wouldn’t understand if you weren’t a truck driver.

The song was written during the 1973 oil crisis, so that explains its rebellious tune. Now that’s a big 10-4!

11. King of the Road: Roger Miller

It was Roger Miller that phrased the quote, “I’m a man of means by no means” in this song.

What makes this song special is that the lyrics are open to different interpretations and it doesn’t get old even more than 50 years after its release.

12. Mama Hated Diesels: Commander Cody and his Lost Planet Airmen

Disclaimer; this is a sad trucker song with a Greek tragic ending.

The narrator’s mother hates diesel trucks, but in a twist of fate, the son (narrator) grows up to become a truck driver.

A few years later, the narrator attends his mother’s funeral where he learns the truth.

Who cut the onions goddamn it?

Older Model Peterbilt Custom Large Sleeper Berth

13. Phantom 309: Red Sovine

Red Sovine tells us an interesting story in this song, but rather than sing, he speaks.

The persona (a hitchhiker) comes across a truck driver at a crossroad who is riding a truck named “Phantom 309”.

Well, to avoid spoilers, let’s just say the ending will probably give you chills.

14. Teddy Bear: Red Sovine

This is another sad song by Red Rovine about a young paraplegic boy (teddy bear) whose father, a truck driver, was killed in a road accident.

The little boy uses a CB radio to communicate with other truckers who later visit the boy to give him a ride.

Interestingly, the song is based on a true story.

15. Give Me 40 Acres: The Willis Brothers

If you ever tried to back up a big 53 feet tractor-trailer and got stuck in a tight spot, that is exactly what the Willis Brothers are talking about in the song, although in a humorous way. You know, when you need 40 acres to get turned around?

And if you get too frustrated trying to back up, you will probably need 40 sticks of dynamite to blow up the damn thing!

Older Model Kenworth W900 White Striped Custom B ig Sleeper

16. Roll-On (18 Wheeler): Alabama

This story tells the story of a truck driver trying to provide for his family.

It was the lead single off Alabama’s album with the same name (Roll On). After it was released in 1984, it went on to claim the number one spot in Country songs charts across the USA and Canada.

17. Prisoner of The Highway: Ronnie Milsap

For most truck drivers, driving a truck across the country is more than just a job but a way of life.

You can’t really explain it but when you’re away from the road for too long, you feel like you’re missing something.

Ronnie Milsap expresses those sentiments in this song, hence the “prisoner of the highway” phrase.

Like they say “once a truck driver, always a truck driver”.

18. Willin’: Little Feat

If you’ve been a truck driver long enough, you’ve probably done some of the things that Little Feat is talking about in this song.

You know, things like driving in the snow, cruising in the highway late at night, or using back roads to miss the scales.

1980 Kenworth W900A

19. Roll On Big Mamma: Joe Stampley

There is something special about driving a big rig; from the jake brake sound to the air horns and the engine sound when cruising on the highway, it’s almost like it’s singing.

Like Joe Stampley sings on Big Mama “ the diesel smoke with every stroke sings a song with a heavy note ”.

20.The White Knight: Cledus Maggard & The Citizen’s Band

Here is a song to crack you up especially if you’re a truck veteran who was around during the CB radio craze.

The narrator is going beyond the speed limit and gets a heads up on the CB radio about an incoming picture taker (police with a radar).

You see, back in the days, truckers used to collaborate on the CB radio and sometimes speed pass the highway patrol at the same time so they wouldn’t get a ticket.

If you follow the story on this song, it all goes south from that point.

Modern (Newer) Trucking Songs

21. last of the cowboys: tony justice .

Even though Last of the Cowboys is not a classic yet, it’s a modern country song that pays tribute to truckers.

A cool fact about the singer is that he’s also a truck driver and one of the few modern-day artists that make songs for truckers.

22. The Worst Truck Driver: Jack Grace Band

Most people don’t know about this song, but it’s a cautionary tale of a truck driver who doesn’t care, and should probably be locked up.

The good thing about the song, it sounds like it was written back in the 60s or 70s but it’s modern.

Don’t take it too seriously though, it’s just a comic song.

23. Brothers of the Highway: Tony Justice

For some truck drivers, you make friends with fellow truckers along the way and it develops into a brotherhood.

Sometimes when you’re in a situation, it’s a truck driver just like you who pulls up to help you out.

This song is a dedication to those brothers of the highway.

Peterbilt Black 379 Big Sleeper Berth Truck

24. This Is How We Roll: Florida Georgia Line

Released by Florida Georgia Line in 2014, this song climbed to the top of the country songs charts and became a big hit.

Sure, it doesn’t tell stories like the old classic trucking songs but it’s more of a party hit to bump in your truck.

25. Chicken Lights and Chrome: Jesse Watson

Legend has it, back in the 1920s when trucks were too slow, people used to climb at the back and steal chicken in dark alleys.

To curb that behavior, truckers put up lanterns on their cargo to deter any potential thieves, hence the name “chicken lights”.

Anyway, this song isn’t that old, but it’s one of the most popular modern truck songs released in the past decade.

26. Asphalt Cowboy: Jason Aldean

This song is written from the perspective of a truck driver who misses his wife back home.

The narrator doesn’t want to leave the side of his lover but he’s needed elsewhere to deliver a load.

This could be the perfect song to dedicate to your wife if you’re a trucker.

1987 Peterbilt 359 Numbered Truck

27. I’m A Road Hammer: The Road Hammers

This is a country-rock song that was released way back in 2005 and it became the band’s biggest song.

The rhyme scheme, catchy chorus, and the baseline will probably make you want to pedal to the metal. Just hope you don’t get pulled over by a bear!

28. Keep On Truckin: The Road Hammers

The same guys that recorded “I’m a Road Hammer” did this song.

However, the subject is a little bit different; it’s a motivational song for truckers not to quit when things get tough.

29. Trucking Song: Pure Grain

This trucking song is what we call a blend of old school rock, southern soul, and country music.

If you’re a new truck driver , you could probably learn something from this song; you don’t need to double-clutch , just float the gears .

30. Highway Junkie: Randy Travis

If you can relate, the narrator of the song is talking about how he needs to hit the road with an 18 wheeler to get over a heartbreak.

Apparently, coffee and cigarettes don’t help much, but those big wheels and rubber will do the trick.

Famous Songs Written About Truck Driving

Trucking isn’t for the faint of heart. With regular long hours spent driving and interacting with sometimes ungrateful customers, it’s no surprise that artists over the years have churned out songs dedicated to helping truck drivers gain recognition and tell their personal stories of time spent on the road. Some of the most popular tunes tell stories of longing and highlight the difficulties of being so far away from their families. Others bemoan the neverending stretch of highway before them or tell stories of tragic experiences.

Truck driving songs really entered the scene back in the 1950s, although it was in the 1960s when the sub-genre of trucking songs really started making a name for itself. Let’s take a look at some of the most popular trucking songs over the years.

“East Bound and Down” by Jerry Reed

Revered by many as the best song ever written about truck driving, This Jerry Reed song was originally recorded for the popular movie “Smokey and the Bandit.” Since then, the song has grown in popularity. In 1977, it was on the Billboard charts for 16 weeks, climbing as high as the number 2 spot. Over the years it’s been rerecorded many times and was featured on the TV show “Archer.”

“Phantom 309” by Red Sovine

This Red Sovine tune is haunting in that it tells the story of a hitchhiker being picked up by trucker Big Joe and his rig, the Phantom 309. Driving through the night, the trucker drops the hitchhiker off near a rest stop at dawn to buy coffee. While filling his coffee cup, the hitchhiker is informed that Big Joe passed away years before in an accident while trying to avoid crashing into a school bus.

“Truck Driving Man” by Terry Fell

Originally released in 1954, this fast-paced tune features heavy use of the harmonica, and was one of the very first trucking songs.

“White Line Fever” by Merle Haggard

Another tragic tune, this song tells the story of a trucker who sees his death drawing near but can’t quit because he’s never known any life other than one following the white lines of the highway.

“Roll On (Eighteen Wheeler)” by Alabama

Another popular song among truck drivers, this number 1 single by Alabama tells the story of a truck driver returning home to his family. However, on the journey home, a blizzard strikes, causing his truck to jackknife. Instead of taking a tragic turn, the song ends with the trucker calling his family to let them know he’ll be home soon.

What is Hamas, and why did it attack Israel now?

song about ghost truck driver

An earlier version of this article incorrectly described Hamas’s aim as the creation of a Palestinian state along the borders that existed before the 1967 war. Hamas does not recognize the existence of Israel and is committed to replacing it through armed struggle with a Palestinian state stretching from the Mediterranean Sea to the Jordan River. In addition, an earlier version of this article inaccurately characterized Qatar's relationship with Hamas. Qatar works with Hamas to provide humanitarian assistance to civilians in the Gaza Strip, but it does not directly support the group. The article has been corrected.

Israel declared war against Hamas on Sunday, following a surprise attack by the Palestinian militant group based in Gaza that included the taking of civilian hostages at a music festival, where at least 260 bodies have been recovered. Israeli security forces, caught off guard, have pounded the Gaza Strip with retaliatory strikes, and U.S. officials said they expect Israel to soon launch a ground incursion into the enclave as violence escalates in the conflict-ridden region.

Israel is searching for more than 100 hostages, including Americans, believed to have been taken to Gaza by Hamas. President Biden labeled the actions of Hamas as “beyond the pale” in a speech Wednesday.

Since winning legislative elections in 2006, Hamas has repeatedly attacked Israel with rockets and mortars, emerging as a defiant adversary. Israel has retaliated with its superior firepower and a punishing blockade, restricting imports and the movement of civilians in a strategy of collective punishment. The blockade and recurring Israeli strikes have contributed to Gaza’s poor infrastructure and living conditions. Israel declared a full siege of the enclave on Monday, with Defense Minister Yoav Gallant promising “no electricity, no food, no fuel” and calling Hamas militants “savages.”

The Gaza Strip and its history, explained

Here’s what to know about Hamas and the latest violence .

Israel-Gaza war

Israel ordered the entire population of the northern Gaza Strip to evacuate, as Hamas called for a worldwide “day of rage” to take place Friday.

Hostages: Video evidence suggests that Hamas took at least 64 captives into Gaza. Among those abducted from their homes or seized from a music festival are a mother, her two young daughters , a restaurant manager and a DJ. Here’s what we know about the hostages taken from Israel .

Israeli-Palestinian conflict: Here is a timeline of the decades-old conflict and what to know about the more recent violence in Israel and Gaza . The Hamas -controlled Gaza Strip has a complicated history , and its rulers have long been at odds with the Palestinian Authority , the U.S.-backed government in the West Bank.

Americans killed: 27 American citizens have been killed, and 14 are unaccounted for, U.S. officials said Thursday. Here’s what we know about how the United States is getting involved in the Israel-Gaza war and how other foreign nationals were affected .
