The Cast of Netflix's The Haunting of Bly Manor Are Ready for More Seasons

"The stories are boundless."

preview for The Haunting of Bly Manor Trailer

Our editors handpick the products that we feature. We may earn commission from the links on this page.

  • Both are created by Mike Flanagan, and feature a similar cast, including Victoria Pedretti and Henry Thomas.
  • Here's what we know about a third season, and why one seems likely.

Netflix is home to two of our favorite haunted house shows —and more could be on the way. First came The Haunting of Hill House , Mike Flanagan's radical re-envisioning of Shirley Jackson's book of the same name. The Haunting of Bly Manor , out October 9, works with Henry James' famous works of horror, most notably A Turn of the Screw .

Given this pattern, will there be a third installment in Flanagan's Haunting series? If the cast has any say in the matter, the answer is a resounding yes. Much like Ryan Murphy's horror anthology American Horror Story , the Haunting series features the same actors playing new characters—and "the regulars" are open to returning.

"The stories are boundless," Henry Thomas, who appears in both series, tells OprahMag.com. "Though Haunting of Hill House and Bly Manor are both horror genre, they deal with so much more than your average horror genre piece. We're dealing with big themes."

While Bly Manor and Hill House both feature ghosts (lots of 'em, in fact), the shows are as concerned with exploring what ghosts represent as creating jump scares. Take Bly Manor 's tagline, "Dead doesn't mean gone." In another horror work, this sentence would be purely foreboding. Within the context of Bly , though, it raises the notion of connecting with loved ones after death.

However, there's not much of a chance that the third "season" of The Haunting of Hill House will come out next October, due to coronavirus-related delays. Here's what we know about the future of Netflix's Haunting series.

The Haunting of... series has not been renewed. Yet.

But we're hopeful. The Haunting of Hill House was a downright phenomenon in 2018, with the "Bent Neck Lady" showing up in our memes and our collective nightmares. The Haunting of Bly Manor is drumming up similar anticipation among viewers.

Should audiences exhibit demand, then we're confident about season 3. Further, the series lends itself to future seasons. Flanagan is riffing off of classic works of horror literature. There's far more where Shirley Jackson and Henry James came from.

the haunting of hill house

Don't plan on it coming out next October, though.

There was a two-year gap between The Haunting of Hill House and The Haunting of Bly Manor , and we might have to wait even longer for future Haunting installments. While Flanagan has begun production on another series (more on that, later), there have been widespread production delays due to the coronavirus pandemic.

What spooky mansion will the third season of Haunting focus on? We have ideas.

Haunted houses never get old—and literature proves it. There are countless famous books about houses in which human and ghostly inhabitants coincide. We can suggest a few.

  • The Good House by Tananarive Due begins when a woman inherits her ancestor's house, and is haunted by an ancient spirit.
  • In The House Next Door by Anne Rivers Siddons, a couple becomes convinced the house next door to them is haunted.
  • Stephen King called Hell House by Richard Matheson one of the scariest haunted house books ever written.
  • Or, if Flanagan wants to play with the idea of haunting more than actual ghosts, he can turn to Rebecca by Daphne DuMaurier.

The setting of Bly Manor could give a clue about the next season, too.

Flora's wedding takes place in a historic hotel in California. Based on the exchange of scary stories in the first episode, the hotel used to be a convent. The ghost of a nun roams the hallways. Perhaps it will be the inspiration for season 3 of the Haunting series. Flanagan hasn't attempted nuns yet.

If season 3 happens, it will feature the same cast, more or less.

This much is for sure: The next season will feature at least a few of the regular cast members. Victoria Pedretti, Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Henry Thomas, Carla Gugino, and Katie Siegel have appeared in both seasons—and we have a feeling they'd return for the next one.

The cast of Bly Manor and Hill House don't play favorites between the shows. When asked to decide whether Hill House or Bly Manor is scarier, Jackson-Cohen is torn. "They feel equally haunted. I don't know how much I'd want to live in either," he says. Pedretti, on her end, would rather live in Bly. "Hill House is really not a properly operating house. At least in Bly the lights work," she says.

For now, watch out for Flanagan's next horror series on Netflix.

Haunting may not be around the corner—but another Flanagan project is. Production on Flanagan's next Netflix horror series , Midnight Mass , began in August. Midnight Mass will feature two Haunting regulars–Henry Thomas and Kate Siegel, who happens to be Flanagan's wife.

Midnight Mass is related to another one of Flanagan's works. In Hush , Flanagan's 2016 movie, a masked killer stalks author Maddie Young (Kate Siegel) in her remote home. Young is the author of a book called—you guessed it— Midnight Mass. The book also shows up in the Netflix movie Gerald's Game , which Flanagan directed. Looks like Netflix is becoming the new site of the Mike Flanagan horror universe, and we can't wait to be scared.

10 best animated haunted house movies to watch before netflix's the house.

From Coraline and Hotel Transylvania to Scooby-Doo and more, find the most memorable animated haunted house movies to see before Netflix's The House.

Premiering on January 14, 2022, the Netflix original miniseries The House is a three-part animated horror-comedy that plays to the sensibilities of the older and younger crowd alike. The stop-motion anthology series follows three distinct stories set in one creepy haunted house, calling to mind some of the most memorable animated horror films of its ilk. Mainly, creepy cartoonish things going bump in the night in one relatively confined indoor location.

RELATED: 10 Best Anime Like Netflix's Squid Game

Animated horror fans who've yet to see The House or those awaiting the fate of a potential season 2 would be wise to prepare by checking out the coolest and spookiest animated haunted house movies.

Coraline - Stream On Roku

An absolute paragon of stop-motion animation, the Oscar-nominated  Coraline takes the artistic plaudits that Henry Selick achieved in The Nightmare Before Christmas to a whole new level of excellence. Dakota Fanning stars as Coraline , a lonely and eccentric young girl whisked away into an otherworldly dimension through portals in her strange childhood home.

Aside from the dazzling animation, the movie captures the childlike imagination of Coraline like very few other films, allowing viewers to identify with and relate to Coraline as she encounters one freakish creature after another.

Monster House - Stream On Netflix

Produced by Hollywood legends Steven Spielberg and Robert Zemeckis, Monster House is a pricey computer-animated feature that horror fans of every age ought to tour. The plot concerns a trio of young friends who discover that a freaky neighborhood abode is a living entity with terrifying motives.

RELATED: The 10 Best Robert Zemeckis Movies, Ranked (According To IMDb)

Beyond the state-of-the-art motion-capture animation and genuine thrills and chills for a younger audience, the story is ultimately an uplifting tale of teenage friendship that everyone can glean valuable life lessons from. Moreover, the movie has tons of cool easter eggs relating to Stephen King's books and movies, which gives it a self-reflexive authority that adds to the fun.

ParaNorman - Stream On Netflix

One of the best character-driven haunted house animations, ParaNorman is a terrific tale about a misjudged young boy who comes into his own with newfound confidence. When a strange curse plagues his town of Blithe Hollow, Norman must use his ability to speak to the dead to quell a monstrous onslaught of zombies, witches, ghosts, ghouls. This includes protecting his home and his family's legacy.

Like any great children's film, the stop-motion animated horror movie teaches invaluable life lessons about self-acceptance, overcoming fears, and sacrificing for the greater good. While the story extends to Norman's neighborhood, the scene in which he visits the haunted Penderghast house is a pitch-perfect example of tension, suspense, horror, and comedy.

The Wolf House - Stream On AMC+

The little-known Spanish/German-language film The Wolf House may be the most terrifying animated house movie ever made . The story concerns Maria, a young woman who escapes a German colony and seeks refuge in a mysterious Chilean home. Once there, unspeakable evil ensues.

The avant-garde project took five years to complete, with the painstaking effort visible onscreen through a whirlwind of visual creativity. Surreal and nightmarish as can be, the mixed style of animation is almost identical to that of The House but is far scarier than most horror material geared toward children.

Monsters University - Stream On Disney+

Less of a residential abode than an official college campus, for all intents and purposes, Monsters University is akin to a haunted house movie. The misadventures of Mike and Sully are explored as they come of age in a prequel to Monsters Inc . , providing some of the most impressive 3D animated artwork in some time.

RELATED: The 9 Best Pixar Families, Ranked

A grand metaphor for being different, the movie is a rousing reminder for children to accept who they are no matter what others think. With hilarious jokes to appeal to parents and good messaging for the kids, the haunted dorm room scenes are up there with the best of them.

Scooby-Doo Meets The Boo Brothers - Stream On Boomerang

While there have been many worthy haunted houses that Scooby-Doo has frequented over the years, his time on a cursed plantation house in Scooby-Doo Meets the Boo Brothers is one of the better examples. A huge part of the appeal is the trio of ghostbusting spirits Scoob and the gang hires to quell the vengeful spirit of Shaggy's deceased uncle.

In addition to paying homage to Ghostbusters  and other amusing horror movie references , the mysterious mansion itself is an eldritch maze of terror littered with bears, apes, headless horsemen, and a Skull Ghost that is sure to raise the hair of young horror fans everywhere.

Hotel Transylvania - Stream On Fubo

Semantics aside, Hotel Transylvania is essentially one large haunted house franchise in which the world's most infamous horror villains play hotelier hosts to the so-called normal people. Dracula, Frankenstein's Monster, the Mummy, and other classic Universal monsters get to prove how misunderstood they've been in the world for generations.

The franchise does such a good job of subverting stereotypes, bucking convention, and completely reimagines the harrowing horror villains as deeply flawed and fully-rounded characters with just as many petty problems as everyday human beings.

Frankenweenie - Stream On Disney+

From the uniquely inspired mind of visionary Tim Burton, Frankenweenie transcends the haunted house subgenre to become a profoundly moving tale of friendship. Yet the inciting resurrection of Victor's reanimated pet pooch Sparky takes place in a makeshift laboratory in his attic. Before exploring the neighborhood, the claustrophobic tension and suspense inside Victor's house are second to none.

Adapted from his own 1984 short film of the same name, Burton has a preternatural understanding of what it's like to be an outsider and uses the age-old Frankenstein template to convey a sense of alienation and isolation.

The Addams Family - Stream On Hulu

Adapted from the beloved 1960s sitcom , The Addams Family  computer-animated movie released in 2019 incorporates a lot of campy, kitschy haunted house tropes that are quite amusing for older and younger crowds alike. The moody atmosphere of the Addams abode atop a mountain surrounded by foggy marshland is quite an unsettling sight to behold.

Between the moldering interiors of the decrepit manse, secret tunnels beneath the foundation, hidden surveillance cameras, and more, the movie celebrates the eerie eccentricities of the family rather than castigate them as terrifying, which is the basis of the morbid humor.

The Haunted House: The Secret Of The Cave - N/A To Stream

The first cinematic adaptation of  Shinbi Apartment series, The Haunted House: The Secret of the Cave is a terrific Korean animated feature somewhat similar to Scooby-Doo . The story involves Shinbi, a 102-year-old goblin living in an apartment, and the secret cave it discovers along with two young protagonists.

The cave transports the trio to 1996 where they encounter the same apartment Shinbi inhabits in the present, leading to a harrowing backstory of an ancient village accursed with evil. While The Haunted House series can be streamed on Netflix, the film version is a bit harder to find. However, it's worth the search.

'The Haunting of ...': Haunted House Stories We Want Mike Flanagan to Tackle Next

With Shirley Jackson and Henry James' works already covered, could it be time for Edgar Allan Poe?

Mike Flanagan may have single-handedly* reinvented TV horror with the one-two punch of his Netflix anthology series, The Haunting of Hill House and The Haunting of Bly Manor . (*Including, of course, Flanagan's talented cast and crew, and the long-standing works the contemporary retellings are based on.) In both the 2018 series and 2020's own follow-up tale, Flanagan's angle opted to put twists and turns on horror tropes while fully steeping his stories in the genre itself. Are there jump scares, phobias, and supernatural spooksters from the unimaginable beyond? Yes, of course. But the real horror in The Haunting of episodes is in the very real psychological terror that haunts every one of us and the evils we do to each other.

Flanagan understood as much. That's why he chose the works of Shirley Jackson and Henry James for his Haunting of anthology series. First reimagining Jackson's own 1959 gothic horror novel "The Haunting of Hill House" for the titular series, then adapting multiple Henry James' works like "The Turn of the Screw," "Owen Wingrave," "The Jolly Corner," "Sir Edmund Orme," "The Romance of Certain Old Clothes," and "The Beast in the Jungle", Flanagan seems to have found his groove in making old horror new again. So one wonders, with two The Haunting of titles under his belt and enjoying critical and viewership success, what's next?

That's our question, anyway. We can't wait to watch the next haunted house story from the mind of Flanagan, but also can't help to wonder what source material he'll draw upon next. We're so enthusiastic, in fact, that we've done some of the heavy lifting in the meantime. What follows is our suggestions for Season 3 of the fantastic horror anthology series, The Haunting of ...

The Many Disturbing Works of Edgar Allan Poe

So far, The Haunting of stories have mainly focused on a malevolent force embodied by an overlarge house, a cast of psychologically damaged characters wondering if they are in fact going crazy, and a compelling mystery tying those two aspects together. Poe basically made his career on those very same tenets. What better collection of oddities to pull from for Season 3 of The Haunting of series?

Honestly, the more difficult question here is which of Poe's many stories do you focus on? Or which ones to you include at the expense of the many, many others? Well, to that end, we've put together the short stories that focus mainly on mysterious circumstances taking place in an infamous abode. These range from immense elaborate estates meant for the upper echelon of society, to asylums and morgues, to the rather mundane dwelling in which cold, calculated murders take place. Here are our favorites.

The Masque of the Red Death

Boy, 2020, am I right? What a time to revisit this classic Poe piece in which the 1%ers -- notably royal lords and ladies -- sequester themselves in a castellated abbey to avoid the common rabble and the plague known as the Red Death. Far from observing social distancing measures, the well-to-do invitees of Prince Prospero engage in a lavish party, throwing all other caution to the wind as they think themselves safe behind closed doors. The problem is that even the most isolated estate with the stoutest of doors can't keep death at bay.

This story could serve as a wonderful anchor piece for Flanagan should he choose to go a bit on-the-nose with social commentary, but it's also a rather colorful one for the production design team to have a literal ball with. And even if it's not the only story told in The Haunting of , it'd make for a great root tale complemented by the others on this list.

The Fall of the House of Usher & The Haunted Palace

This is honestly the first haunted house that came to mind when thinking of a third season of The Haunting of . When first seeing the title country house situated near a mountain lake, the unnamed remarks upon the sizable crack extending from the house's roof all the way down through its foundation and into the grounds toward the lake itself. That's a powerful visual note and a fantastic metaphor to play with as the show goes on. It's the Usher siblings and their ill-fated demise in the fracturing house that form the core mystery here, one that's hinted at and interrupted by "The Mad Trist", a fairy tale of sorts and "The Haunted Palace", a musical poem also written by Poe. These additional bits of fiction give Flanagan plenty more fantasy fodder and room to play, much like the origin story of Bly Manor provided for a full episode outside of the current timeline.

The Premature Burial, The Black Cat, and The Cask of Amontillado

When it comes to Poe's go-to phobias, being buried alive pops up more often than not. These three short stories, along with a plot point in The Fall of the House of Usher, center on the horrifying prospect of being buried before shuffling off that mortal coil. These stories in particular span the range of the macabre from a mere unhealthy obsession with the fear of death and being buried alive, to animal torture and murder, to outright premeditated murder of fellow human beings. Regardless of how these stories would be handled in The Haunting of, the fear of being buried alive is an intimate one that is broadly relatable but rarely displayed in modern horror these days. Flanagan's next haunted house could hold more than just secrets and mysteries in its depths.

Another "buried alive" story from Poe, this one strikes more romantic and personal chords than the above-mentioned titles. It also ups the creepiness factor by a few factors. One of Poe's other central themes is that of an unexplained and incurable illness afflicting a main character, and in the case of "Berenice", it's the title character who suffers this misfortune.

Berenice is the once-beautiful cousin to the obsessive, amnesiac Egaeus, but she herself suffers from an unnamed degenerative disease and bouts of catalepsy. As both of the characters' maladies progress throughout the story, things end rather grisly, both with a premature burial of the former, and a grave-robbing, teeth-collecting ::shudder:: incident committed by the latter. It's about as creepy as Poe gets, and Flanagan could sure tweak the story to suit his needs.

The Oval Portrait

Portrait play a big role in The Haunting of series, so why not bring a companion piece to the fellow 19th century work "The Portrait of Dorian Gray" into the mix? This short story of Poe's, one of his shortest, once again deals with nearsighted obsession; a fascination with fading, transient beauty; and a supernatural force that transcends human frailty and weakness. More interestingly, it starts out with the unnamed narrator seeking refuge in an abandoned building, a theme that's repeated on occasion in Poe's work. That could make for a curious kernel of an idea for how disparate and unrelated characters come to inhabit the same haunted house in Season 3. As for "The Oval Portrait," it's a quick tale to tell, but a creepy one to experience, and a perfect fit for The Haunting of...

The System of Doctor Tarr and Professor Fether

About as close to dark humor as Poe gets, this short story has a Shyamalan-worthy twist near the end. Having the benefit of some 150 years of fiction and, yeah, you might see it coming, but the "inmates are running the asylum" idea would make for a fun bit of storytelling for Flanagan & Co.

The Pit and the Pendulum

While I don't expect Flanagan's next The Haunting of ... to include torture victims of the Spanish Inquisition, this story features perhaps Poe's most famous psychologically scarring setup. A prisoner is confined in a totally dark pit, using only their own clothing and wits to suss out the nature of their predicament. Having barely dodged certain death multiple times, they eventually find themselves strapped to a wooden frame with a razor-sharp blade suspended above them, swinging back and forth on a slowly descending pendulum. It's tailormade for suspense and makes your skin crawl at the same time. I don't know how Flanagan would work such a SAW -worthy aspect into The Haunting of , but featuring a similar device in the subterranean crypt of the haunted house would certainly up the intensity a bit.

The Tell-Tale Heart

Back to the buried alive motif, this story is perhaps the best instance of the phobia mixed with the Flanagan-friendly idea of psychological torment derived from guilt. Poe focuses more on the emotional side of murder -- both the events leading up to it and the resulting effects from it -- than the reason for the murder itself, but explanations of the irrational behavior of human beings was never really his strong suit. Besides, you spend enough time being watched by a "vulture-eyed" old man and see how long your sanity holds out.

Murders in the Rue Morgue

One of Poe's acclaimed detective stories, this classic tale includes a seemingly impossible double murder and conflicting witness testimonies. It also includes an absolutely ridiculous solution that no one in their right mind could have seen coming, which is why Poe was the perfect person to write it. Could Flanagan fold in the insane and unpredictable events of "Murders in the Rue Morgue" into Season 3 of The Haunting of... ? We doubt it, but we live to be surprised!

There's plenty of Poe to work with, but if Flanagan wants to go for something a little less obvious, we've put these suggestions out into the collective unconscious for good measure.

Wilkie Collins’ 'The Woman in White'

Contemporary to Poe and Henry James comes Wilkie Collins 's 1859 novel, The Woman in White , widely regarded as one of the first mystery novels and an early forerunner of the sensation sub-genre of literary novels. It may be a little less on the supernatural side, but what it lacks in spooky scares it more than makes up for in psychological torment.

Check out the synopsis (via Amazon ):

The Woman in White  famously opens with Walter Hartright's eerie encounter on a moonlit London road. Engaged as a drawing master to the beautiful Laura Fairlie, Walter is drawn into the sinister intrigues of Sir Percival Glyde and his "charming" friend Count Fosco, who has a taste for white mice, vanilla bonbons and poison. Pursuing questions of identity and insanity along the paths and corridors of English country houses and the madhouse,  The Woman in White  is the first and most influential of the Victorian genre that combined Gothic horror with psychological realism.

'Hell House' by Richard Matheson

For a more contemporary take on haunted houses, we turn to acclaimed horror writer

Richard Matheson and the 1971 novel "Hell House." Though the story's roots are undeniably grown from the other entries in this list, Matheson's angle of spiritualism versus science is a rich one from which to mine content. And if it scared Stephen King , it should scare just about everyone else.

Here's the synopsis (via Amazon ):

Rolf Rudolph Deutsch is going die. But when Deutsch, a wealthy magazine and newpaper publisher, starts thinking seriously about his impending death, he offers to pay a physicist and two mediums, one physical and one mental, $100,000 each to establish the facts of life after death. Dr. Lionel Barrett, the physicist, accompanied by the mediums, travel to the Belasco House in Maine, which has been abandoned and sealed since 1949 after a decade of drug addiction, alcoholism, and debauchery. For one night, Barrett and his colleagues investigate the Belasco House and learn exactly why the townfolks refer to it as the Hell House.

The Haunting of Starship 'Event Horizon'

Okay, this one obviously pushes the boundaries and sensibilities of Flanagan's The Haunting of... by quite a few (million) miles, but how fun would it be see a haunted house story ::echoey voice:: in spaaaaace ? One of the best examples of that idea is the 1997 Paul W.S. Anderson sci-fi flick Event Horizon . Don't write this one off; it's a wild, psychologically tormented ride through every individual crew member's worst nightmares and guiltiest secrets, all of which come to bear in a perceived reality thanks to the sentient ship's trip into an alternate hellish dimension. Yeah, it's wild stuff, and we'd love to see more of it!

Here's the synopsis:

When the Event Horizon, a spacecraft that vanished years earlier, suddenly reappears, a team is dispatched to investigate the ship. Accompanied by the Event Horizon's creator, William Weir (Sam Neill), the crew of the Lewis and Clark, led by Capt. Miller (Laurence Fishburne), begins to explore the seemingly abandoned vessel. However, it soon becomes evident that something sinister resides in its corridors, and that the horrors that befell the Event Horizon's previous journey are still present.

'House of Leaves' by Mark Z. Danielewski

"You said it was a horror story, but it's actually a love story." That paraphrasing can be used to describe either Flanagan's existing The Haunting of... series or the work of Mark Z. Danielewski in his debut novel "House of Leaves." This non-traditional novel has a  lot going on between the many,  many pages, but at its core is a house that appears much larger on the inside than seems possible by its exterior. That's barely scratching the surface of this many-layered tale, which is what makes it perfect for someone like Flanagan and an anthology like The Haunting of...

Years ago, when House of Leaves was first being passed around, it was nothing more than a badly bundled heap of paper, parts of which would occasionally surface on the Internet. No one could have anticipated the small but devoted following this terrifying story would soon command. Starting with an odd assortment of marginalized youth -- musicians, tattoo artists, programmers, strippers, environmentalists, and adrenaline junkies -- the book eventually made its way into the hands of older generations, who not only found themselves in those strangely arranged pages but also discovered a way back into the lives of their estranged children. Now, for the first time, this astonishing novel is made available in book form, complete with the original colored words, vertical footnotes, and newly added second and third appendices. The story remains unchanged, focusing on a young family that moves into a small home on Ash Tree Lane where they discover something is terribly wrong: their house is bigger on the inside than it is on the outside. Of course, neither Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist Will Navidson nor his companion Karen Green was prepared to face the consequences of that impossibility, until the day their two little children wandered off and their voices eerily began to return another story -- of creature darkness, of an ever-growing abyss behind a closet door, and of that unholy growl which soon enough would tear through their walls and consume all their dreams.

V. C. Andrews' 'Flowers in the Attic'

Buckle up for this one because ... yikes. If you're not already familiar with V.C. Andrews ' controversial work "Flowers in the Attic," it suffices for now to say that the 1979 gothic novel was but the first in the long-running series of stories following the Dollanganger Family. But boy does this first book pack in a lot of storytelling, so much so in fact that it's easy to say, "Yup, that's enough for me," after only reading the first novel. That first book may just be enough for Flanagan & Co. as well, though the option to continue the story certainly exists.

At the top of the stairs there are four secrets hidden—blond, innocent, and fighting for their lives… They were a perfect and beautiful family—until a heartbreaking tragedy shattered their happiness. Now, for the sake of an inheritance that will ensure their future, the children must be hidden away out of sight, as if they never existed. They are kept in the attic of their grandmother’s labyrinthine mansion, isolated and alone. As the visits from their seemingly unconcerned mother slowly dwindle, the four children grow ever closer and depend upon one another to survive both this cramped world and their cruel grandmother. A suspenseful and thrilling tale of family, greed, murder, and forbidden love, Flowers in the Attic is the unputdownable first novel of the epic Dollanganger family saga.

R.L Stine's 'Welcome to Dead House'

Things got a little serious with that last entry so let's lighten it up somewhat with one of my childhood favorites: R.L. Stine 's "Welcome to Dead House", the first in the best-selling Goosebumps series. Is the kid-focused story about a home for wayward, blood-drinking zombies a bit too tropey and childish for the likes of Flanagan? Maybe. The Haunting Continues: The Mysterious Events at the Haunted House

In the small town of Oakwood, there lies a house that has been the subject of countless rumors and ghost stories for decades. Locals refer to it as the “Haunted House,” a place where supernatural occurrences are said to be a regular part of daily life. Over the years, many brave souls have ventured into the house, hoping to uncover the truth behind the eerie happenings. In this article, we will delve into the latest events that have unfolded at the infamous Haunted House.

The Haunted House has a long and dark history, dating back to the early 1900s. It was originally owned by the Johnson family, who mysteriously disappeared one fateful night. Since then, the house has changed hands multiple times, with each new owner experiencing unexplainable phenomena. From strange noises in the dead of night to objects moving on their own, the Haunted House has become a hotbed of paranormal activity.

The latest owner of the Haunted House, Sarah Thompson, purchased the property with the hope of debunking the supernatural claims surrounding it. Sarah, a renowned paranormal investigator, believed that there must be a logical explanation for the strange occurrences. Little did she know that her journey into the Haunted House would be far from ordinary.

Upon moving into the house, Sarah immediately noticed a chilling atmosphere that seemed to permeate every room. She set up her equipment, including cameras, audio recorders, and electromagnetic field detectors, in an attempt to capture any evidence of paranormal activity. It didn’t take long for her to realize that she was not alone in the house.

The first night in the Haunted House was relatively quiet, with only a few minor incidents. Sarah heard faint whispers and footsteps echoing through the hallways, but nothing too out of the ordinary. However, as the days went by, the activity escalated, leaving Sarah questioning her initial skepticism.

One of the most notable incidents occurred during Sarah’s second week in the house. She was conducting an EVP (Electronic Voice Phenomenon) session in the master bedroom when she captured a chilling voice on her recorder. The voice, barely audible, seemed to be saying, “Get out… before it’s too late.” This unnerved Sarah, but it also fueled her determination to uncover the truth.

As Sarah delved deeper into her investigation, she discovered a hidden room in the basement of the Haunted House. The room, which had been sealed off for years, contained a collection of old photographs and journals belonging to the Johnson family. Sarah spent hours pouring over the documents, trying to piece together the puzzle of what happened to the family all those years ago.

According to the journals, the Johnsons had been plagued by supernatural occurrences similar to those experienced by subsequent owners of the house. They described seeing apparitions, hearing disembodied voices, and feeling an overwhelming sense of dread. The final entry in the journal was dated the night of their disappearance, and it simply read, “They’re here… we can’t escape.”

Armed with this newfound information, Sarah reached out to local historians and paranormal experts to help her unravel the mystery of the Haunted House. Together, they uncovered a dark secret that had been buried for decades. It turned out that the house was built on an ancient burial ground, and the spirits of those buried there were restless and seeking revenge.

The team of investigators decided to conduct a séance in the Haunted House, hoping to communicate with the spirits and find a way to bring them peace. As they gathered in the dimly lit living room, they channeled their energy and opened themselves up to the supernatural realm. What happened next was beyond anything they could have imagined.

The spirits, finally given a voice, revealed the tragic events that had unfolded in the house over the years. They spoke of their anger and resentment towards the living, blaming them for disturbing their eternal rest. The investigators listened intently, offering apologies and promising to find a way to rectify the situation.

In the months that followed, the team worked tirelessly to find a solution to the haunting. They consulted with spiritual healers, performed cleansing rituals, and even considered exorcism as a last resort. Slowly but surely, the activity in the Haunted House began to subside.

Today, the Haunted House stands as a testament to the power of the supernatural and the resilience of the human spirit. While the events that took place within its walls will forever be shrouded in mystery, the house serves as a reminder that there are forces beyond our comprehension. It also serves as a cautionary tale for those who dare to venture into the unknown, reminding us that some secrets are better left undisturbed.

As for Sarah Thompson, she has since moved on from the Haunted House, forever changed by her experiences. She continues to investigate the paranormal, sharing her knowledge and insights with others who seek answers to the unexplained. The Haunted House may no longer be her focus, but its legacy lives on, captivating the imaginations of those who hear its chilling tale.

The house on King Road: A look at the Moscow home where four U of I students were killed

Idaho Statesman logo

Sally Krutzig and Kevin Fixler, Idaho Statesman

Back of Moscow house

( Idaho Statesman ) — At 1122 King Road in Moscow sits a gray six-bedroom, three-bathroom house that continues to be the source of significant national attention.

Known as a student rental, the home’s most recent tenants were a group of six University of Idaho undergraduates who signed a 12-month lease that began on June 5, according to the property management firm that oversees the home.

Three of the student renters would not live to see the end of their lease.

The tenants were Madison Mogen, Kaylee Goncalves, Xana Kernodle, Bethany Funke and Dylan Mortensen, as well as an unnamed sixth person on the lease.

In the early morning hours of Sunday, Nov. 13, Mogen, Goncalves, Kernodle and Kernodle’s boyfriend, Ethan Chapin, were stabbed to death in the house. Police found two bodies on the second floor and two bodies on the third floor, but have not released which victims were discovered where.

Mortensen and Funke were on the first floor of the home and went unharmed. Police have said they were not involved in the killings.

Nearly six weeks have passed, and law enforcement still has not named a suspect in the quadruple homicide.

The Idaho Statesman used photos from rental listings and documents submitted by former owners to the city of Moscow to explore the layout of the King Road house. Depictions of the floors are approximations created by the Statesman based on that information.

Just north of the home is the university’s new Greek Row , where many fraternity and sorority activities take place. That proximity meant the area was particularly popular among those involved in U of I Greek life.

About 1,600 students are members of the school’s fraternities and sororities. That total represents 23% of the roughly 7,000 undergraduate students enrolled in fall 2022 at the Moscow campus, according to university spokespeople.

Goncalves was a member of the Alpha Phi sorority, while Mogen and Kernodle were members of Pi Beta Phi. Funke is a member of Pi Phi as well, and identified Mogen as her “big sister” in a letter she wrote that was read at a Dec. 2 memorial . Mortensen also appears in multiple photos reviewed by the Statesman, including with Funke, on the sorority’s Facebook page, wearing clothing with Pi Phi insignia.

Many renters in the area around King Road were overflow from the nearby fraternities and sororities, said Merida McClanahan, supervisor at Team Idaho Real Estate & Property Management.

“ we have a lot of university students as our tenants and we’ve got quite a few of the properties down there on King Road,” McClanahan told the Statesman in a phone interview. “It’s a tight-knit community. They’re on the back side of campus right across the street from Greek Row, and those kids cycle in and out.”

The listed owner of the King Road property didn’t return email and phone messages from the Statesman.

1205 07 Moscow House statesman

David Janssen, 32, a former U of I graduate student who said he’s a five-year tenant of an apartment complex adjacent to the rental home, confirmed that fraternity and sorority members appear to dominate the tightly packed neighborhood.

The surrounding Greek life environment contributed to what those familiar with the neighborhood, including Janssen, described in interviews with the Statesman as a loud party culture in the conjoined dead-end streets of King and Queen roads.

“This has always been a party place since I’ve lived here — always,” said Sean Hundley, 34, a nearly lifelong Moscow resident, and maintenance person for the adjacent apartment complex.

The tenants of the King Road house had received three noise complaints for loud music since August, according to a Statesman review of Moscow police reports. Two came on the same night in early September from separate neighbors in two single-family homes, each about a quarter-mile away, on the street located above the valley where the King Road house sits.

Goncalves received a warning from police for the first noise complaint in August. Mogen and Kernodle each received law enforcement warnings from the two complaints in September, according to the police reports.

In recently released Moscow police body-cam footage posted on YouTube , officers were shown trying to track down a resident of the home after the first of the September noise complaints.

“I guarantee you they’re associated with a sorority,” Moscow Police Sgt. Dustin Blaker said in the footage, to a male student who didn’t live at the home. “As many of them are living here, it’s an off-campus sorority house.”

Three floors of Moscow house

The King Road home’s six bedrooms had at one time been rented as separate apartments, according to McClanahan, with the property management firm.

“Primarily for the last 12 years, it has been rented as one unit as a single-family home,” McClanahan said.

The house originally had two floors, but an owner requested to add the lowest floor in 2000, according to Moscow city permits. Built into a hillside, the house has one exterior door on each floor.

The home is 3,120 square feet, according to Zillow . The Latah County Assessor’s Office assessed its value at $343,848 in August.

The first floor

first floor moscow house

All of the tenants except the sixth unnamed person on the lease, who police said had moved out before the start of the school year, were home at the time of the Nov. 13 attack. The five housemates, along with Chapin, were all back at the King Road house by 1:56 a.m., police said. Call records made by Mogen and Goncalves indicated the attack happened sometime after they placed a phone call at 2:52 a.m., according to The New York Times.

The roommates on the first floor, Mortensen and Funke, likely were asleep until later that morning, according to police.

Attempts by the Statesman to reach Funke and Mortensen have been unsuccessful.

At 11:58 a.m., a 911 call was made from inside the house on one of the surviving roommates’ cellphones, according to police. The roommates summoned friends to the house because they believed one of the victims on the second floor had passed out and was not waking up. Multiple people spoke with the 911 dispatcher before officers arrived, police said.

Authorities have declined to release the 911 recording, citing an ongoing investigation.

On social media, many have expressed disbelief that Mortensen and Funke would not have woken up during the killings. However, former first-floor tenant Ryan Augusta told Fox News that he typically “heard nothing” from the second and third floors when he lived there in 2019. Reached by the Statesman, Augusta said he stood by his prior statement.

City records and photos from online rental listings indicate the first floor has two bedrooms that open into a shared hallway. The hallway also leads to a bathroom and a stairway that goes to the second floor.

A door between the bedrooms opens to the property’s driveway.

The second floor

second floor moscow house

The second floor of the home includes a living room, two bedrooms, a bathroom and a kitchen. This floor can be accessed from the outside through a sliding glass door between the porch and the kitchen.

This floor has two separate staircases, one that leads to the first floor and one to the third floor.

Kernodle lived on the second floor, her mother, Cara Northington, said in an interview this month with NewsNation . Chapin’s mother, Stacy Chapin, previously confirmed to the Statesman that her son spent the night at his girlfriend’s house.

The third floor of the home includes a bathroom and two bedrooms — one of which has a balcony with a sliding glass door. This floor can be accessed only by the staircase from the second floor.

Goncalves’ father, Steve Goncalves, said his daughter and Mogen lived on the third floor, according to Fox News. He said he believes that the two women, close friends since childhood, both slept in Mogen’s room the night of the killings.

Two items — a pair of pink boots frequently worn by Mogen in social media photos and a decorative letter M— could be seen in the window of bedroom E following the homicides. Goncalves posted social media videos from bedroom F.

Goncalves had a dog named Murphy who was home at the time of the attack, police said. Officers found the dog in a room where the crimes were not committed, but do not know where he was at the time of the killings, according to a news release. Police found no evidence on the dog, they said.

When haunted houses aren’t just about the dead

For millennial women in these 2023 novels, economic woes create a generational conflict that haunts the real estate they can’t afford.

Books for millennials with housing woes.

If you line up the most popular horror novels of 2023, you’ll see a lot of houses. Houses on covers, the word “house” in titles: “The Spite House,” “Fever House,” “The Night House.” On the fronts of books, these demonic domiciles shapeshift from schoolhouses to vacation rentals to English manors.

Haunted houses are often a proxy for domestic unrest and family secrets — think of Jack Torrance’s alcoholic raging and the dead woman in Room 237 — but fears and troubles change, and every generation’s issues are embodied anew. This latest wave of haunted real estate tales could be chalked up to quarantine, when scores of writers were doomed to languish in their homes. But there’s something else afoot in a few of these stories, and it has to do with women: mothers and daughters, and the conflict of generations between them.

In Grady Hendrix’s “How to Sell a Haunted House,” leading lady Louise Joyner returns to her childhood home after both of her parents die suddenly. The staunchly pragmatic Louise was often at odds with her kooky mom, who jazzed up her life of full-time childrearing by starting a Christian puppet ministry. Their shared propensities for secrecy and denial lay fertile ground for spookiness, though Louise — attacked by her mother’s taxidermy squirrels the day after her parents’ funeral — convinces herself that the ambush must have been an actual squirrel infestation.

Sam Montgomery, the heroine of “A House with Good Bones,” by T. Kingfisher, is likewise keen to rationalize her own weird experiences in her mother’s house, which used to be owned by her grandmother. Gran Mae, whose weapon of choice was Southern gentility, has been dead for almost 20 years, so Sam is surprised when her foulmouthed, free-spirit mom suddenly emulates her. “I don’t believe in ghosts,” Sam narrates. “And if they do exist, they show up in old Gothic manors and crumbling farmhouses, not cookie-cutter tract housing in the middle of a subdivision.”

Margaret Hartman definitely believes in ghosts. Her old Victorian is full of them, but it’s her dream house, so she’s not leaving. Carissa Orlando’s “The September House” is the only novel in this trio told from the mother’s perspective rather than her daughter’s, but Margaret is constantly at odds with her hard-headed only child, Katherine. Katherine insists on visiting the house in September, its most active month, putting Margaret in a bit of a pickle. She’s been hiding the haunts from Katherine, along with the fact that her husband, Hal, has been missing for weeks.

While family secrets and rationalist naysaying are hallmarks of most haunted house narratives, it’s notable that, in these books, these dynamics exist between modern mothers and daughters. Just as the property and family histories passed down in each novel are not as benign as they seem, so too are each generation’s expectations of women. These fictional daughters are all millennials, aged between 29 and 39, whose mothers became mothers in the wake of second-wave feminism, which propelled women out of the house and into the workplace.

But as any young woman these days knows, having both a rich home life and professional fulfillment — “having it all,” or at least having a house — has become something of a holy grail, thanks to inflation and wage stagnation.

And perhaps as a result, Louise, Sam, and Katherine are all successful career women, but their home lives are sparse. Louise works in tech design and is a single mom; Katherine is a single finance executive. Sam, also single, is an entomologist specializing in archeological digs. Her work is scattershot, the academic pay underwhelming. She lives with multiple roommates in Tucson.

Louise chooses to have a baby alone. Sam doesn’t want kids, and isn’t sure she wants a husband. All of them have a lot of family baggage to unpack if they want to pursue healthy relationships; and given how domestic life went for their mothers, they have few models of emotional success to emulate. (After all, their moms’ houses are haunted for a reason.)

When Betty Friedan published “The Feminine Mystique” in 1963, she certainly couldn’t have foreseen the economic woes — the inflation rates and the slow crawl of minimum wage — that have kept a new generation of young women from attaining the kind of fulfillment promised by second-wave feminism. Yet the expectations of an older generation still hang heavy over millennials, who feel the pressure both to marry and achieve the kind of financial success that allows one to buy a home — indeed, to start a home or relationship at all. No wonder such a generation refers to their dogs as their children and obsesses over homesteaders on Instagram.

It’s this struggle between generational realities that is the true haunt of horror novels like “The September House,” “A House with Good Bones,” and “How to Sell a Haunted House.” Poltergeists make for dramatic set dressing, to be sure, but the underlying battle is between mothers and their millennial daughters, whose disparate access to domestic bliss further tautens these tales of supernatural drama. The past is past, they say; there’s no mother model to save you. Time to put on your big girl rosary and exorcize those demons.
