“ On the eve of the announcement of the North American Joint Security Agreement, Nicaraguan rebels decide to turn Mexico City into a modern battlefield by selling some stolen surveillance hardware to some Mexican forces. To make matters worse, the US President has disappeared in this attempted coup. As a member of the elite Ghost Recon squad, it is your job to lead your futuristic warriors in to the heart of the battle against insurmountable odds and come back in one piece. - Description ”

Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter , or GRAW , is a tactical shooter video game published by Ubisoft Entertainment on March 9, 2006. In the game the player takes control of a team of Ghosts while neutralizing hostile forces and completing mission objectives.

Being a tactical shooter, GRAW places emphasis on taking cover in order to stay alive along with strategic co-ordination to successfully complete missions. The game allows new strategic situations to be planned and performed using original features. One feature is the Integrated Warfighter System . The system is based on the Future Force Warrior program, which is a program made by the United States military that consists of training soldiers with weapons and armor that will be used in the future. One thing that would not be included in the real life military was the XM8 Rifle which in 2005, was cancelled while still in its testing phase.

Advanced Warfighter is highly unusual because there are three versions of the game, one for PS2 and Xbox, one for PC, and one for Xbox 360 and there are minor differences in the storyline and missions.

The gameplay puts emphasis on making the player do all of the fighting while AI teammates come along and offer minor help. Unlike in previous Ghost Recon games, the player only controls the squad leader, but the player can issue commands to AI-controlled teammates to maneuver them indirectly.

Combat in GRAW is much more forgiving than previous Ghost Recon games because the player can often survive several bullets before dying, instead of dying after only a few hits. However, the player cannot restore health in the middle of a mission, and a single headshot or burst from an assault rifle will kill the player, so the game still relies more on tactical combat than normal arcade-style shooting.

PS2/Xbox version

The PS2/Xbox version of GRAW is a first-person shooter. This version has fewer features than the Xbox 360 or PC versions. The player has only one AI-controlled teammate, and there is no tactical map or cross-comm shooting system to issue special orders or to highlight enemy positions. Mitchell never speaks in this version. This version of the game is often criticized negatively.

Xbox 360 version

Unlike all other versions of GRAW , the Xbox 360 version is a third-person shooter, using an over the shoulder perspective . This version features a unique covering system which allows the player to duck behind objects and perform tactical maneuvers such as popping up from cover and shooting. In this version the player is followed by three AI-controlled teammates. While the player can issue commands to the entire squad they cannot issue orders to an individual teammate.

The Xbox 360 version features a tactical Cross Com system. This system allows the player to command both their squad and other allied units such as UAV drones and helicopters. The Cross Com can be used in conjunction with the Intel Map, which is a tactical map showing the entire playing area to issue commands. The Cross Com system also highlights the enemy positions spotted by the player or a member of the player's squad.

The PC version of GRAW is in first-person. This version allows the player to issue commands to individual teammates, in an effort to appeal to the fans of the original Ghost Recon series. This version requires the player to use squad tactics to achieve success. This version also features larger levels than the console versions, with the enemy AI more likely to use ambush tactics, as a result the player must be more aware.

Like the Xbox 360 version the PC version features a Cross Com system that allows the player to issue commands to friendly units, as well as to lay down attack routes and battle plans on a real-time tactical map. The Cross Com system also highlights enemy soldiers spotted by friendly units. Unlike the Xbox 360 version the Cross Com only highlights enemies within the squad's line of sight.

Inventory (PC)

Before a mission the player is allowed to choose the weapons for the ghost team. A ghost may carry a primary weapon, a secondary weapon, and extra ammo or a heat-seeking RPG. Every Ghost has a maximum weight that they can carry. The more equipment a Ghost is carrying, the faster he gets fatigued when sprinting. Some of the weapons may be modified and the player can add various things to them such as laser sights, grenade launchers, silencers, and front grips. Every modification has its advantages and disadvantages. The red dot sight increases accuracy by replacing the standard iron sights, but adds some weight. Grenade launchers reduce accuracy and are heavy, but give the option of launching grenades. Silencers decrease the sound of the weapon firing and the muzzle flash at the expense of accuracy, and range. Front grips increase stability at the expense of accuracy. Players can also take ammunition from the weapons of dead enemies or allies if their weapon is of the same caliber, but are not allowed to pick up the weapons themselves. The weapons used by the Ghosts are various assortments of rifles, submachine guns, pistols and explosives, some of which are supposedly going to enter military service in the future where the game takes place.

The plot takes after the events of Ghost Recon 2: Summit Strike . Players take control of Captain Scott Mitchell as he commands the Ghosts in an attempt to protect the United States and Mexican presidents, recover stolen U.S military technology, and battle Mexican rebels . The story unfolds entirely in a realistic and detailed modeling of Mexico City, one of the world's largest cities. It is this size that allows GRAW to provide multiple location like in the previous Ghost Recon games, ranging from heavily industrialized areas to local parks and landmarks to office districts.

The game takes place over the course of three days in 2013, beginning in Mexico City. A US spy plane carrying Guardrail IX , a device capable of disrupting wireless communications, is shot down over Nicaragua . Intelligence discovers a plot to transfer the device to rebels in Mexico City, and the Ghosts are sent in to retrieve it. One of the rebels is identified as Colonel Carlos Ontiveros , son of Mexican General Ontiveros , and a student of Bud , Mitchell's friend and a UH-60 Blackhawk pilot. The mission is aborted when a coup d'état begins in Mexico City and the Ghosts are ordered to Mexico City immediately, where a summit involving the leaders of the United States: President James Ballantine , Canada: Canadian Prime Minister (unnamed), and Mexico: President Ruiz-Pena , who are signing the North American Joint Security Agreement (NAJSA). The summit is attacked by Mexican revolutionaries, who kill the Canadian Prime Minister, and force the Presidents of the US and Mexico into hiding. Mitchell is sent to safely extract both leaders.

Ballantine is safely evacuated to Air Force One but is unable to take off due to the danger of being shot down. President Ruiz-Pena is evacuated to the US Embassy in Mexico City where a bomb nearly destroys the embassy, and the Ghosts fend off a massive onslaught long enough for help to arrive. The Mexican President agrees to allow US forces to fight the rebels and restore order. Mitchell is tasked with destroying artillery to open the road for an assault on Chapultapec, where 50 M1A2 Abrams tanks given to the Mexican government as part of NAJSA lie idle. He is later ordered to rescue the American tankers who had been training the Mexicans in how to use them and "borrow" a few tanks.

The rebels use Guardrail IX to monitor US communications and the rebel special forces called the Aquila 7 ambush the Ghosts protecting the President. Mitchell is ordered to rescue him. President Ballantine's rescue is successful, but the Nuclear Football is stolen by the rebels and with the Guardrail IX, the rebels are able to control US ICBMs, which cause China and Russia to ready their own.

Mitchell is ordered to retrieve the Guardrail IX and the Football, but he only succeeds in disabling the Guardrail IX. He is then ordered to return to clear several blockades in Mexico City to allow US tanks to pass. While being extracted, Major General Martin's Black Hawk Helicopter is shot down and Mitchell is ordered to defend him until he can be extracted. US forces then begin a final push towards Zocalo Plaza where General Ontiveros is held up inside the Palacio National.

Mitchell is ordered to destroy the last pieces of the Guardrail IX before sneaking into the palace. General Ontiveros is there and was captured while attempting to flee, but Carlos manages to escape and hijacks Bud's Black Hawk, shooting him in the head and then shoves him off and puts on his helmet, angering Mitchell, who sees this happen on his Cross Com. Carlos flies to the wrecked US embassy and begins transferring the codes for the US nuclear arsenal. Mitchell and his team raid the embassy, recover the football, and finally track down and kill Carlos.

A retired U.S. Army general, James Monroe , who was opposed to the U.S.-Mexican treaty is discovered to be the traitor within the U.S. government that had been assisting the Ontiveros' in their activities.

Missions list

Coop maps (xbox360), multiplayer (xbox360).

There are 15 available game types in Xbox multiplayer that test your mettle as an advanced warfighter. All your skills, honed by playing the single-player campaign, are put to the test in these contests for survival. All game types can be played on the available maps, which often drastically change your strategy and approach to an arena. The sniper perch you used to gun down traffic in Sharpshooter on a particular map may be too far away from the central action in teambased Strike Command on the same battlefield.

  • Bounty Hunter : Players have infinite spawns, so carnage is high. Players are assigned a "target" opponent at the beginning of the match and receive bonus points for consecutive kills. If the player is shot, there point accruement start over after respawning. Player with most points when time is up wins.
  • Seek and Destroy : When a player achieves the first kill, that player becomes the target. If another player manages to shoot the target, they become the target. Points are only awarded for shooting the target, not for eliminating other players. The target can earn points by shooting players. Players have unlimited respawns.
  • Last Man Standing : Players cannot respawn in this heated match. The last player to survive the firefight wins.
  • Sharpshooter : This traditional deathmatch-style game ends with the first player to achieve 10 kills. There are no bonus points for consecutive kills.
  • Thief : Players must shoot each other. The player with the highest score becomes the “thief,” and is hunted by the other players. Players receive two points for killing the thief and one point for shooting other players. Each player has only five respawns.
  • Firefight : The enemy density on the map is considered medium, with some pockets of safety between various hot zones. Each player must check their aggressions, because they are limited to three respawns. Once you have been eliminated for the fourth time, you are relegated to the role of spectator. Hosts can customize this match type to grant respawns and alter the number of enemies present in the match.
  • Domination : There are five zones to be captured and points are continuously awarded as long as a team holds a territory. The team with the most points when time expires wins. There are unlimited respawns, and helicopters do not factor into gameplay.
  • Hamburger Hill : Teams contest a central zone in the map. The longer a team occupies the zone, the more points they receive. The team that occupies the zone benefits from additional support from a helicopter that flies above the map and attacks the team not currently in control of the zone. Players have infinite respawns and the team with the most points at the end of the match wins.
  • Siege : The team’s base is selected as the territory to control. Teams must find the base and control it while the other team attacks. There are infinite respawns and no helicopter support. The team with the most points when time is up is declared the winner.
  • Capture the Flag : Players try to steal the opposing team’s flag and return it to their base while defending their own flag from encroachers. Players benefit from infinite respawns. The match ends when the first team reaches 10 points.
  • Recover : There is a single flag in the center of the map, which both teams must fight over. Points are awarded when the flag is taken back to the team base. Players have infinite respawns and the game ends when the first team reaches 10 points.
  • Search and Rescue : There are multiple unarmed officers located in the map that must be escorted back to each team’s base. Teams earn points for every second an officer survives in their custody. The team with the most points when time runs out wins.
  • Escort : Players must seek out an armed officer. The armed officer shoots at all other players while in custody. The longer you hold on to the officer, the more points you receive. The first player to reach 50 points wins.
  • Flag Carry : Players make a mad dash for a single flag in the center of the map. Points are accrued as long as you hold the flag, but if you are shot, you drop the flag. The player with the most points when time is up wins.
  • Recon : Firefights are not advised, as they raise alarm and attract reinforcements. Since players cannot respawn after being killed, stealth is priority one. Hosts can customize this match type to grant respawns, alter the number of enemies present in the match, alter the number of zones that players must recon, and whether or not being detected by enemies ends the match in failure.

Grenadier

Multiplayer maps (Xbox360)

Multiplayer (pc), domination mode.

The goal of the game is to capture all the zones on the map - or hold the most zones when the match time is up. Your enemy's base zone can not be captured. Zones not held by either team are neutral. You capture a zone by outnumbering the enemy forces in that zone. This progress goes faster the more teammates you have there.

A zone can only be captured if it is connected directly or indirectly to your team s base zone. These connections are called supply chains, and appear automatically between all zones held by a team. Although you can't capture it, an enemy zone can be neutralized even if you don't hold an adjacent zone. This way you can cut your enemies supply chains to strangle their frontline forces.

The ownership monitor - underneath the minimap - shows all due battle data:

  • Friendly zones are blue
  • Enemy zones are red
  • Neutral zones are grey

If you stand in a zone that is held by your team and is connected to a supply chain, you can enter the equipment screen to change gear. You buy equipment with the tactical points earned during the game.

Whenever you die you are taken to the status screen, where you wait to respawn. From here you can enter the equipment screen.

Product description

Ubisoft's award-winning shooter that was founded on the PC returns with Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2, designed specifically for the PC gamer by GRIN. Building on the foundation of Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter, the sequel is a near-future warfare masterpiece. Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2 for the PC screams tactics, and you'll need to bring your best to bear if you are going to get the Ghosts past their latest challenge... It's 2014, and the soldier of the future returns to encounter a new and more imminent threat along the recently completed wall on the U.S./Mexico border. The Ghosts are more powerful with an upgraded Integrated Warfighter System (IWS), but will have only 72 hours to assess the threat and stop the rebels from reaching U.S. soil. With a border that's 1,900 miles long and an enemy that doesn't play by the rules, this is a job for the U.S. military's most elite fighting unit. This is a job for the Ghosts.

Key features:

  • Vastly Improved Multiplayer - Huge variety of modes from classic team deathmatch to the exclusive recon vs. assault.
  • Top-Notch Tactical Gameplay - PC-exclusive tactical maps and non-linear missions in both indoor and outdoor environments.
  • More Options Mean More Strategies - Your team is more customizable and has grown with the addition of a communications specialist. New team play options abound including the 'bubble system,' which rewards players for more cohesive teamwork.
  • All-New Battlegrounds - For the first time ever, the Ghosts will defend U.S. soil from a cross-border attack, taking the fight to all-new locations. The Ghosts will battle enemies in mountain terrains, barren deserts, and even protect their home turf in El Paso, Texas. Each environment presents its own benefits and challenges and will call for fresh tactical approaches.
  • More Technology and Firepower - All systems have been upgraded to give players more power and control on the battlefield, including an improved Cross-Com. Cross-Com 2.0 will go full screen with the click of a button, enabling you to deliver more precise and deadly attacks.
  • Overhauled Graphics and AI: - Battle your way through a highly realistic near-future warfare experience against a much smarter enemy. They'll try to flank your position or gain strategic vantage points in order to take you down. But don't worry - your team has your back. Their AI has been upgraded as well. They'll feed you more of the information you need with descriptive commands like 'enemy spotted behind red truck ahead.'

Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter Single-Player Preview - Fighting the Future

The fate of the Mexican government--and Western political stability--is in the hands of the Ghosts in the first Tom Clancy game to hit the Xbox 360. Our exclusive preview has all the details.

By Brad Shoemaker on February 13, 2006 at 6:22PM PST

Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon series has been undergoing a steady gameplay evolution since the first ultra-tactical entry hit the PC in 2001. The 2004 sequel focused more squarely on flashy, run-and-gun action with bigger explosions and a third-person perspective more suitable for the console crowd, though it retained the realistic trappings of the original game. After strategizing our way through the first several missions of the Xbox 360 version of Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter, the third game in the series, it looks like Raleigh, North Carolina-based Red Storm has continued to refine the series' trademark tactical military gameplay while adding in the most explosive action the series has seen yet, not to mention a host of futuristic, high-tech toys and some of the nicest visuals we've seen on the 360 to date. (And if you don't believe us, why don't you watch some brand-new high-def gameplay movies for yourself?)

Advanced Warfighter's fast-moving plot makes you hit the ground running almost as soon as the game begins. Your first mission has you moving solo into the dense urban jungle of Mexico City to investigate the whereabouts of a fellow operative who is himself gathering intel on some shady characters' nefarious doings. But things take a turn for the dramatic when insurgents stage a coup d'état in the midst of a multinational political conference taking place in the center of the city. Since you and a number of your fellow Ghosts are already on the ground, the parameters of your mission suddenly become a lot heavier, as you're tasked with rescuing the American and Mexican presidents and quelling the uprising. No big deal, though. All in a day's work for the Ghosts, right?

The core gameplay here isn't fundamentally different from that of the first game way back when, though the controls and third-person perspective will be most familiar to veterans of the second game on the Xbox (and its expansion, Summit Strike). Calm down, purists--you can still use first-person for maximum realism. Of course, you'll have a wide assortment of advanced assault rifles and antiarmor weaponry at your disposal, so you'll have access to various levels of zoom, grenade launchers, and other fun stuff depending on your loadout.

Advanced Warfighter has incorporated some new action-oriented elements that make the gameplay even more fast-paced than before. For instance, when running you can now perform a sort of base slide into the crouching position, which is useful for moving toward cover at high speed and then quickly getting down behind the barrier safely. You can also back up against any flat surface, Solid Snake-style, and then peer around corners or up over low walls to take a quick shot before jumping back to safety. These little enhancements have so far made the game feel much more immediate and satisfying than past Ghost Recons, though the tactical nature of the series still seems well in place. Just because you can go running around like an action hero doesn't mean you'll win that way, in other words.

The cross-com's advantages almost make the game seem too easy--until you realize how heavily the odds are stacked against you.

The most noticeable addition to Advanced Warfighter is the extremely busy heads-up display, which lights up like a Christmas tree when the action gets hot. You'll be fed an immense amount of combat and tactical data in real time throughout a mission, and this constant stream of info is enabled by the cross-com, a high-tech monocle that overlays targets with highlights and distance indicators, delivers a picture-in-picture video of your allies' perspectives, and more.

The cross-com almost makes the game feel too easy, until you realize the action gets so intense that you have to rely on its features just to survive. For instance, once you ID an enemy soldier, he'll be marked with a red outline that will even show up when he's behind cover. Friendly units will similarly be highlighted in green, and your own teammates will have a blue outline, along with floating arrows that point to their exact locations. Throw in a night-vision-style view enhancement that cuts through obstructions like smoke in order to highlight pertinent threats, and you've got a formidable advantage against the terrorists trying to bring down the Mexican government.

Your cross-com-enabled data flow will make it easier to give orders not only to your own up-close teammates, but even to remote units stationed all over the map of a given mission. In some missions you'll have access to a cypher, a flying camera-equipped drone that can send back video and spot sensitive targets. For example, you'll use this cypher in the first mission to pinpoint the location of a comrade who's pinned down by enemy fire, and it's easy to switch to a 3D tactical map of the mission to tell the drone exactly where to go. You can also use the cross-com to cycle through your friendly units, from your squad to the cypher to the occasional armored vehicle, and issue commands such as "advance" or "fall back" using a streamlined, unified interface.

Your wealth of tools and combat information makes in-mission strategizing essential.

Sounds like you've got an unfair advantage against the bad guys, huh? Hardly. In fact, it seems like you'll need all this gear to achieve victory, considering we've run into severely capable artificial intelligence in a number of instances. We've noticed foes laying down suppressing fire on us, then falling back to more protected cover when the opportunity became available. In another particularly notable instance, we attempted to run from behind a wall and across a gap to take cover behind a parked car. Using the slide maneuver we managed to make it to this ostensibly safe position, but no sooner had we crouched down by the passenger door than the enemy across the street took us out with a headshot right through the car's window. That was a humbling experience, to say the least.

From what we've played so far, the flow of each mission will be fast-paced and fluid. You won't go into any mission with a clear set of orders; rather, you'll have some sense of how the tumultuous situation in Mexico City is progressing, and you'll receive further intel as you move from place to place, getting new orders directly from the top brass overseeing the operation. So far, we've had to pinpoint and then rescue a trapped ally; escort the Mexican president to a waiting APC; defend a bombed-out position from waves of incoming enemies; gun down dozens of rooftop assailants from the door of an attack helicopter; and repel an ambush of foot soldiers and armored vehicles--and that's just in the first few missions.

Remember those mocked-up screenshots and videos of what Advanced Warfighter would probably look like that came out around May last year? We were skeptical last year that the final product would live up to that high standard, but based on the late-in-development build we've been playing, it looks like Red Storm has gotten pretty darn close to the mark. The character models sport a level of geometric detail like you'd expect from an Xbox 360 game, and we've noticed lots of nice little touches to the animation, such as the way your character's hand goes up to his headset when audio comes in from the brass.

Needless to say, this is one of the best-looking 360 games to date.

While the environments aren't quite as finely detailed as the characters, there are so many surface and post-processing effects going on--things like reflective and specular maps and high-contrast sunlight--that it's hard to care. And besides, the maps are far broader and more expansive than before. Even the use of prevailing colors is nicely rendered; the first mission, which takes place near dusk, casts a deep orange hue on the environment, while the second mission, which is set during the next day, is much brighter and more well-lit. But again, these things are much better seen than described, so check it out for yourself.

Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter has presented quite a compelling combat experience so far on the Xbox 360. This is the most accessible game yet in the series--the core action feels more satisfying than before, and the game does a good job of ramping you up to using the fairly complex set of controls--but the tactical, highly dangerous nature of the realistic military gameplay is still here in force. And that's all just in the single-player campaign--there's also the online multiplayer mode, which we detailed in earnest last month. At the moment, Advanced Warfighter is looking like the most compelling game to hit the Xbox 360 since the system's launch last November. Stay tuned for more on the game in advance of its early-March release date.

10 Soviet buildings inspired by Le Corbusier

In October the world began celebrating the 130th birthday anniversary of Le Corbusier (1887-1965), arguably the most important and influential architect of the 20th century. In his time, this great urban planner determined a significant part of the future of world architecture. His followers worked throughout the world, developing the famous Five Points of Architecture: the necessary presence of supporting columns, a flat roof, horizontal windows, a plain façade and a freely-designed ground plan.

The USSR, which hosted the architect three times, implemented only one of his building designs – the Tsentrosoyuz (Central Union) Building. However, the ideas of the Frenchman with Swiss origins were widely popular among Soviet modernist architects. Russia Beyond remembers their most vivid constructions in the Soviet Union.

1. Narkomfin Building in Moscow

This is the most famous monument of Soviet Constructivism in the capital. The communal house designed by architects Moisei Ginzburg and Ignaty Milinis was built between 1928 and 1930 for employees of the People’s Finance Commissariat (Ministry). The construction was overseen by Finance Commissar Nikolai Milyutin, for whom the first penthouse in the world was erected on the building’s roof. Architects called the project a building of a transitional type, since it symbolized the transition from the traditional way of life to a new, socialized existence. Three kinds of apartments or “living cubicles” were planned for the residential block. On the bottom level there were the two-tiered, three-room apartments with a surface area of 60 sq. m. with a kitchen and a toilet (cubicle K), which were used for traditional family habitation. Above were experimental cubicles for two people — dual, two-tiered apartments (2F) with a surface area of almost 30 sq. m. Most of the cubicles in the building have a small surface area of 15 sq. m. (F), and are designed for only one person. A separate communal block was built for the residents of these cubicles. It contained essential household services such as a laundry room, a cafeteria and a library.

2. Communal House on Gogol Boulevard in Moscow

The Demonstrative Construction complex for construction workers also combined features of the old and new ways of life, the so-called “machines for living.” The building was designed by the architects who had conceived the Narkomfin Building in the same period. The complex consists of two residential buildings intended for both individual and family habitation and a two-story communal block for socialization.

3. Communal House of the Textile Institute

In 1929 emerging architect Ivan Nikolaev planned the Communal House of the Textile Institute in accordance with Le Corbusier’s ideas. Two thousand people were supposed to live and study in this building following a very rigid order. The building has the shape of the letter H. Six-meter-square cabins served as bedrooms, plus there were student shower rooms, a cafeteria and finally a study area. At the end of the 1960s the building’s interior was partially restructured and given over to the Institute of Steel and Alloys as a dormitory.

4. Tsentrosoyuz Building in Moscow

Myasnitskaya street. The Tsentrosoyuz Building or Centrosoyuz Building constructed in 1933 by Le Corbusier and Nikolay Kolli.

Le Corbusier’s only structure in the USSR was finished in 1936, when modernist architecture was accused of formalism and became unfashionable. The plan for the building that was being constructed for the Central Union of Consumer Cooperatives was chosen in an open competition, in which not only the best Soviet architects but also the stars of European architecture participated, including Peter Behrens, Max Taut, London’s Vernet & Tate Studio and Le Corbusier himself. The co-authors were his cousin Pierre Jeanneret and Soviet architect Nikolai Kolli, who had worked for two years in Le Corbusier’s studio in Paris. He was the one who supervised the construction process.

The complex was built in accordance with Le Corbusier’s five rules. Ramps instead of stairs became the project’s most prominent feature. They were set up throughout the structure. Furthermore, the first open space offices were installed in the building. When completed, it was the largest office administrative building in Europe.

5. Chekist Town in Yekaterinburg

The Chekist Town.

The Chekist Town.

The complex was built between 1929 and 1936 according to a design by architects Ivan Antonov, Benjamin Sokolov and Arseny Tumbasov as a small dormitory for young state security employees. The complex consists of 14 buildings of various height. Besides the residential building, service buildings, a kindergarten, a clinic and a cafeteria, there is also the 11-story Iset Hotel, a palace of culture and an administrative building. The plan was based on the idea of the communal house. During the Soviet years the complex functioned as a “town within a town.” It was surrounded by control points and entry and exit into the town was allowed only with a special pass.

6. Gosprom in Kharkov (Ukraine)

The House of Governmental Industry.

The House of Governmental Industry.

This was one of the USSR’s first skyscrapers and it was perhaps the only example of a high-rise constructivist building in the country. The House of Governmental Industry was built between 1925 and 1928. Project development was in the hands of a group of architects who were among the first to apply Le Corbusier’s principles to an administrative building (in general, the Swiss-French architect planned private villas and multi-apartment buildings). The building is included in UNESCO’s preliminary list of monuments.

7. Engineer Building of the Ministry of Roads in Tbilisi (Georgia)

The building of Ministry of Roads.

This is another example of a free interpretation of Le Corbusier’s ideas by Soviet architects. The building, constructed in 1975, basically symbolizes a branching out road network. Its body consists of five horizontal two-story blocks that are supported by three vertical rods attached to a cliff. In 2007 the structure was recognized as a national architectural monument.

8. Friendship Resort in Yalta

The Friendship holiday hotel in Yalta on the Black Sea coast.

This is the most unusual example of modernist architecture. It was designed by architects Igor Vasilevsky and Yuri Stefanchuk in 1985. Since the structure had to stand on uneven terrain – a mountainside – its creators devised a particular construction, which people nicknamed “the UFO.” The building’s concrete bodys in the form of a ring with an 80-meter diameter is supported by three towers that contain an elevator, stairs and utilities. An innovative solution was the use of heat from the Black Sea for the heating, air conditioning system and hot water supplies for the buildings.

9. Vyborg Library

Alvar Aalto Library in Vyborg.

This showpiece construction, designed by modernist architect Alvar Aalto, was constructed between 1927 and 1935, when Vyborg (850 km northwest of Moscow) was part of Finland. The large rectangular building made of white concrete with free layouts, continuous glazing and (Aalto’s trademark) funnel-shaped windows in the ceiling is an example of the international style, one of whose followers was Le Corbusier. In 2013 the library was reopened after a 12-year restoration project and is now considered one of the city’s symbols.

A museum on the sacred mountain of Sulaiman-Too in the city of Osh.

This is one of the most remarkable structures of Soviet modernism. Constructed in 1978, it was carved into the side of Sulayman Mountain. Although externally this building hardly resembles Le Corbusier’s typical structures, the principles according to which it was built are representative of the modernist view. The structure mimics the adjacent cliff: the entrance in the form of a concrete arch with continuous glazing and longitudinal beams blends with the mountainous relief. Behind the gate stands a two-story cavernous complex that houses the exhibits.
