Positive Customer Review: "One of the most memorable parts for me was the launch. I went with my wife, and Benetti had a Roman Catholic priest bless the yacht. It was very beautiful with all the Italian music and then the British national anthem, and it was all very unexpected. I thought I was just going to be putting the boat in the water, but in fact it turned into a very emotional day!" - Owner of a Benetti called motor yacht 11:11

Luxury Yacht Rental in Africa

Luxury yacht charter guide to africa.

Sailing, Savannahs, and Safaris – your sojourn to Africa is sure to be ancient, wild, and brimming with modern buzz. From the bohemian edges and meandering mint tea afternoons of the North to the adventure playgrounds and glitzy stays of the South, the evocative history and culture of the East, and the gorillas, skeletal deserts, distant tribes, and wildlife fantasies etched across the center, Africa is endless enchantment. With a wealth of landscapes to choose from, you can sail the Spice Islands, watch for big cats in the bush, and drift away down the winding waterways of Botswana’s Okavango Delta. The continent keeps giving.

Reasons to Charter a Yacht to Africa

Safari style.

Nowhere in the world offers a wealth of wildlife quite like Africa. Home to an army of animals both big and small, you can expect incredible up close and personal encounters with an array of creatures. From angry hippos crashing about in the shallows to elephant families out for a stroll, sleepy big cats and their cubs tumbling in the sun, a thousand kinds of birds and exotic horned antelopes, the shutter on your camera is sure to never stop. Early morning and sunset game drives are a must, but so are the rarer excursions of gorillas in the mist and desert dreams.

Ancient Footprints

The home of earth’s first civilization, Africa is the continent where human life first bloomed into being. From majestic mountains to dusty roads, ancient settlements, and endless empires, there is so much history woven into the seams of this staggering continent. A tapestry of tribal communities can still be found across the North, South, East, West and Central Africa. From the Himba people of Angola to Morocco’s nomadic people, there’s jewelry, masks, dances, songs, and sublime architecture catching it all.

Natural Splendor

The storybook version of Africa is all wild swaying grasses and scores of zebras, but beyond the expected, there’s a whole host of incredible landscapes to fall in love with. Zanzibar is sheer beach bliss with its sugar white sands and clear blue seas. Morocco’s coastline contains barefoot surf vibes, and South Africa is splashed with chic beach breaks and tangled vineyards. Africa boasts yawning deltas, gauzy tropical islands, rising snow-capped peaks, and endless shades of sparkling green.

Where to Visit in Africa

Central africa.

Namibia’s orange dunes and skeletal trees, Gabon’s rare cultural traditions, and Equatorial Guineas glorious rainforest cloaked shores – Central Africa has a one of a kind vibe that remains unmatched across the whole of the colorful continent. Along with incredibly impressive geography there’s buzzing city scenes and local encounters, not to mention whales and elephants tucked into every corner.

North Africa

Marrakech needs little introduction with its maze-like medina, magical market scenes, exotic rugs and beautifully cool tiled riads. The other big North African city is Cairo with its pyramids and pharaoh history. North Africa is a place of fables; bringing scenes of camels crossing deserts, slow boats down the Nile, and Red Sea corners carved with glorious coral, a yacht charter to this side of Africa weaves together sultry desert dreams and a bright bohemian coastline that has tempted artists, writers, queens and courtesans for centuries.

East Africa

From Tanzania and its tapestry of animals and tribes to Zanzibar with its near horizontal beach scene, East Africa is the poster child of an evocative and varied African escape. Few places boast this beach to bush style that invites spice and sailing around the shores of Stone Town before slipping off to the Savannahs for luxury game lodge stays and early morning drives. From Mozambique with its dreamy dhow sails to Pemba Island with its world-class diving sites, this is the art of sailing done right.

When to Charter a Yacht to Africa

Central Africa serves up the best temperatures between July and October for those seeking wildlife wonders and sailing comfort. North Africa stays soft and warm for most of the year, but the western spring and autumn can be pleasant times to explore. East Africa will have the most reliable sailing conditions between June and October.

Africa I - Yacht for Charter

From €200,000 EUR

  • Builder Benetti SpA
  • Length 47m (154ft)
  • Year 2010 / 2019

AFRICA I boasts a twin kids’ cabin, an abundance of water toys and is wheelchair accessible, making her ideal for family charters.

And with a top speed of 24 knots, this luxury superyacht won’t test anyone’s patience while cruising between anchorages.

Interior Design & Engineering

Built by Benetti in 2010, the 47-metre AFRICA I motor yacht cruises quietly at 12 knots and is equipped with a modern stabilisation system to ensure onboard comfort.

Her Francois Zuretti interiors were refreshed in 2019, and as a result, they now have a modern, inviting feel that’s complemented by lots of natural light, funky furnishings and vibrant colours.

Your AFRICA I yacht charter can accommodate 12 guests across six cabins. The master suite on the main deck boasts its own private terrace, while the VIP cabin on the upper deck offers impressive views. The rest of the cabins lie on the lower deck, comprising two doubles and two twins, one of which is designed specifically for children.

Yacht Facilities & Entertainment

The sun deck of the AFRICA I yacht has plenty of space for you to roll out the mat and start the day with morning yoga or a quick workout. Loosen up your muscles with a dip in the Jacuzzi, then take it easy while you recline on the sun loungers.

The main salon is open-plan and feels even more spacious thanks to the combination of large windows and a reflective marble ceiling. At meal times, you can choose between the alfresco table on the main deck aft, the upper deck table or the formal dining room in the main salon.

The upper lounge is perfectly suited for family movie nights. You can curl up on the L-shaped sofa and delve into the film library to choose the perfect film to pop on the cinema screen as you tuck into your favourite snacks.

Toys and Crew

A crew of 10 will deliver an unbeatable AFRICA I yacht charter. They’ll pop you in the Scorpion 7.5-metre chase tender if you want to head ashore or whizz around the bay and help you to make the most of the overflowing toy collection.

Head to the swim platform of the AFRICA I yacht while you wait for them to set up the Seabobs and Sea-Doo waverunners, or fling yourself down the huge water slide if you just can’t wait to get in the ocean. If you’d prefer to sit back with a cocktail and watch the kids splash around on the waves, there’s plenty of space on the fold-down swim platform to set up a table and chairs.

At Yachting.Rent, we believe that some destinations beckon with more than just scenic allure; they resonate with stories, cultures, and an innate spirit of adventure. South Africa, a land where two mighty oceans meet, epitomizes such a call, and here’s why it stands out as a premier sailing destination.

South Africa’s coastline, stretching over 2,500 kilometers, is a mesmerizing blend of diverse landscapes. From the rugged cliffs of the Cape Peninsula to the subtropical shores of KwaZulu-Natal, each nautical mile promises a distinct experience. Sailors are treated to the sight of the iconic Table Mountain rising majestically over Cape Town, only to be later enchanted by the serene beaches of Jeffrey’s Bay, a surfer’s paradise. The Garden Route, with its secluded lagoons and verdant forests, is a testament to nature’s grandeur, offering breathtaking anchorages that few places on Earth can rival.

But the allure of South Africa isn’t limited to its natural wonders. This is a land steeped in history and rich in cultural diversity. As you navigate its shores, you’re not just sailing past landscapes, but timelines—echoes of ancient Khoisan heritage, tales of maritime explorers, and legacies of vibrant communities like the Cape Malays. Ports like Durban offer a fusion of African, European, and Indian influences, making every dock a gateway to culinary delights and cultural exploration.

Yet, what truly elevates South Africa as a sailing haven is its marine biodiversity. The confluence of the cold Benguela Current and the warm Agulhas Current creates a unique marine ecosystem. Dolphins, seals, penguins, and a myriad of seabirds accompany sailors on their voyages. And, in certain seasons, the majestic sight of Southern Right Whales breaching near the boat is nothing short of magic.

Yachting.Rent recognizes the essence of South Africa—the pulse that makes it more than just a destination. It’s an experience, a journey into the heart of a land that celebrates its contrasts. From exhilarating sailing conditions that challenge the seasoned sailor to tranquil bays perfect for the leisure seeker, South Africa has it all. Let us guide you to its wonders, where every sail unfurls a new story.

What Choose

Sailing boat or Catamaran, what to sail in South Africa

South Africa, with its expansive coastline marked by diverse landscapes and dynamic marine conditions, raises a perennial question for mariners: Should you opt for a sailing boat or a catamaran? At Yachting.Rent, we’re here to guide you through this decision, ensuring your South African sailing experience is not only memorable but tailored to your every desire.

The traditional sailing boat, with its deep connection to the maritime world, offers an undeniably authentic sailing experience. Its design, marked by a single hull, allows for closer encounters with South Africa’s coastal wonders. Imagine cutting through the waters with the iconic backdrop of Table Mountain, or navigating the intricate bays of the Garden Route with precision. The sailing boat’s intimate and responsive nature ensures sailors truly feel each wave and gust, perfect for those who cherish a visceral bond with the ocean.

However, the catamaran presents a compelling case for those venturing into South African waters. With its twin hulls, stability is the hallmark. This design ensures a smoother journey, especially when faced with the region’s diverse maritime conditions, from the chilly embrace of the Benguela Current to the warmer caresses of the Agulhas Current. The expansive deck of a catamaran becomes a floating platform for sunbathing, stargazing, or simply relishing panoramic views, be it the bustling harbor of Cape Town or the serene seascapes of KwaZulu-Natal. With its roomier interiors and shallower draft, catamarans also offer unparalleled access to secluded beaches and coves, making them ideal for families or groups seeking both comfort and adventure.

Whichever vessel you lean towards, Yachting.Rent is committed to ensuring your journey is characterized by luxury, safety, and expert guidance. Our fleet, whether sailing boats or catamarans, is maintained to the highest standards. And with our seasoned crew’s knowledge of South Africa’s maritime intricacies, your voyage promises to be as seamless as it is exhilarating.

So, as you stand on the cusp of your South African sailing adventure, let Yachting.Rent guide your choice. Be it the classic allure of a sailing boat or the contemporary charm of a catamaran, South Africa’s waters await your exploration, and the tales of your voyage are waiting to be written.

Eight passengers stranded on African island after Norwegian cruise ship left without them

A dream cruise vacation has turned into a nightmare for eight passengers left stranded on the African island of São Tomé and Príncipe after their ship left without them because they were late to return from a private tour.

The tourists — six from the U.S. and two from Australia — were aboard the Norwegian Dawn, a Norwegian cruise line ship , which departed from Cape Town, South Africa, on March 20 for a 21-day voyage up the coast of Africa set to end in Barcelona, Spain, on April 10.

But on Wednesday, the group of eight tourists was late to return to the ship by more than an hour for the all-aboard time of 3 p.m. from a private excursion on the island, which was not organized by the cruise line.

Jay and Jill Campbell of South Carolina were part of the group that was left behind.

They said that their tour’s operator notified the cruise captain that they were going to be late to rejoin the ship and that the local Coast Guard tried to get them on the vessel but that they weren’t allowed to board.

As a result, the couple and the rest of the group have been stranded for days on the island off Nigeria, grappling with language, currency issues and complicated travel to catch up with the ship.

“The lovely people of São Tomé were very gracious, very hospitable. They had reached out as much as they could to help us find hotels,” Jay Campbell said on NBC's "TODAY" show Tuesday morning.

“We were able to get to a tour agency there to arrange flights to the next port of call. ... Very difficult process — you’re dealing with multiple languages, language barriers, you’re dealing with different currencies ... finding someone that even has dollars ... trying to get an agent to understand where we need to get to.

"It’s one of those ‘You can’t get there from here,’" he added.

A Norwegian spokesperson called the incident a “very unfortunate situation” and said, “Guests are responsible for ensuring they return to the ship at the published time.”

The cruise line said that after the guests failed to return, their passports were delivered to local port agents, in line with protocol. The company said it was working with local authorities to understand “the requirements and visas needed for the guests to reboard the ship at the next available port of call.”

On Monday, the guests had made arrangements to rejoin the ship in Banjul, Gambia, but the ship was unable to safely dock there because of “adverse weather conditions” and “tidal restrictions,” Norwegian said. The guests were then contacted and provided with information to rejoin the ship at Dakar, Senegal, on Tuesday.

Jill Campbell said they traveled through seven countries in 48 hours to arrive in Senegal on Monday night.

But the couple was reconsidering whether they even wanted to return to the cruise.

"We are considering whether or not we are going to board the ship. It is in dock here in Senegal," she said. "We believe there was a basic duty of care that they had forgotten about, so it does concern us."

"After what we witnessed, we truly believe that although there’s a set of rules or policies that the ship may have followed, they followed those rules too rigidly. I believe that they really forgot that they are people working in the hospitality industry and really the safety and well-being of the customers should be their first priority," she added.

Ultimately, the eight passengers did rejoin the cruise before 8:30 a.m. ET Tuesday in Dakar, Senegal, Norwegian told NBC News in an e-mail Tuesday evening, after this story originally published.

Norwegian said the passengers were responsible for making their own travel arrangements to rejoin the ship.

"Despite the series of unfortunate events outside of our control, we will be reimbursing these eight guests for their travel costs from Banjur, Gambia to Dakar, Senegal," a cruise line spokesperson said in a statement. "We remain in communication with the guests and are providing additional information as it becomes available."

A silver lining of the catastrophe was that the Campbells were able to connect with another Norwegian Dawn passenger — Julia Lenkoff, 80 — who was also left on the island, but for a medical reason.

Lenkoff was on a different day tour Wednesday. She had "medically disembarked" from the cruise to seek local treatment on that day, Norwegian said.

Norwegian said that its care team tried to call Lenkoff several times and was unable to reach her and that it worked with its port agent in São Tomé and Príncipe for updates on her health.

The Campbells met Lenkoff and were able to put her in contact with her family in California, who flew her home — a move Lenkoff's daughter said "saved her life."

"She's a world traveler. She travels all the time. So this was going to be one of her bucket list trips, because she's been to 120 countries so far, and she wanted to get to 130," her daughter, Lana Lenkoff Geis, said in an interview that aired Tuesday on "TODAY."

Norwegian said Lenkoff was escorted on a flight to Lisbon, Portugal, then put in the care of airport staff members to continue her journey back to the U.S., where she has safely returned.

Norwegian Cruise captain refused to let eight passengers who were late reboard ship

Passengers, who have since rejoined vessel, missed scheduled departure time from São Tomé and scrambled to reunite with ship

Eight cruise passengers had to scramble to reunite with their cruise ship after being left behind in São Tomé and Príncipe.

The passengers, including a pregnant woman and a paraplegic traveller, missed their scheduled departure time from the island of São Tomé in the Gulf of Guinea, about 250km off the coast of Gabon, after disembarking the Norwegian Dawn to take a local tour.

Another passenger in her 80s was reportedly late to the ship because she was receiving emergency medical treatment on the island.

The vessel, operated by Norwegian Cruise Lines, arrived in São Tome on Wednesday morning having departed Cape Town for the three-week cruise to Barcelona on 20 March.

The group’s private day excursions on the island ran overtime and, despite the efforts of the local coast guard, which motored the group to the ship before it set sail that afternoon, the captain would not allow the late guests to board.

Jill and Jay Campbell, from Garden City in South Carolina, described attempting to board the vessel after arriving late.

“We have never had an experience like this before,” Jill Campbell told ABC4 News .

“The harbour master tried to call the ship, the captain refused the call. We sent emails to NCL, the NCL customer service emergency number. They said, ‘Well, the only way for us to get in touch with the ship is to send them emails, they’re not responding to our emails,’” Jay Campbell added.

“The captain could have made an easy decision to turn one of the tender boats back, pick us up, safely load us, and then go on the way.”

The travellers’ passports were returned to them via port authorities. The group, which reportedly includes two Australians, had to leave their medication, bank cards and other belongings on board. The Campbells said they were the only members of the group with a Visa card and had paid more than $5,000 in their attempts to reach the ship.

They aimed to reboard the Norwegian Dawn in the Gambia the following Sunday but low tides prevented the ship from making the scheduled stop. The group reportedly travelled through six countries and eventually met the ship in Dakar, Senegal, the final west African port call of its journey, according to the cruise line.

“What we looked at was some type of van transportation for eight people, the quadriplegic woman included,” Jay Campbell told ABC15 . He described having to take a ferry to get into Senegal, and then a four-hour drive.

Australians Doug and Violeta Sanders were among the stranded passengers.

“It’s been the worst experience of our lives to be abandoned like that in a strange country, can’t speak the language,” Violeta Sanders told Seven’s Sunrise program.

“We have no money, our credit cards aren’t accepted.”

The 21-day cruise is due to end in Barcelona on 10 April.

A spokesperson for Norwegian Cruise Lines said it was a “very unfortunate situation” and that it was the passenger’s responsibility to be back on board the ship no later than one hour before the ship’s scheduled departure time.

A Sydney travel lawyer, Anthony Cordato, said passengers needed to heed ships’ tight schedules.

“Terms and conditions would make returning to the ship on time essential,” he said.

“From a consumer’s perspective, it’s harsh but from a ship’s perspective, are you going to hold up the cruise for an hour or two because they were slow to get on board? Are you going to inconvenience 1,000 passengers for the sake of four?”

The cruise company said all eight guests had rejoined the ship.

In a statement, a spokesperson said: “On the afternoon of March 27, 2024, while the ship was in São Tomé and Príncipe, an African island nation, eight guests who were on the island on a private tour not organized through us missed the last tender back to the vessel, therefore not meeting the all aboard time of 3pm local time. While this is a very unfortunate situation, guests are responsible for ensuring they return to the ship at the published time, which is communicated broadly over the ship’s intercom, in the daily print communication and posted just before exiting the vessel.

“When the guests did not return to the vessel at the all aboard time, their passports were delivered to the local port agents to retrieve when they returned to the port, as per the regular protocol. Our team has been working closely with the local authorities to understand the requirements and necessary visas needed for the guests to rejoin the ship at the next available port of call. Given that these guests were on a private tour and did not return to the ship at the communicated all aboard time, they are responsible for any necessary travel arrangements to rejoin the ship at the next available port of call, per our protocol.

“While the eight guests made arrangements to rejoin the ship in Banjul, Gambia on April 1, 2024, unfortunately the ship was unable to safely dock in the destination due to adverse weather conditions, as well as tidal restrictions that require specific timing for safe passage. While we share in our guests’ disappointment, this modification was made with great consideration for their safety and that of our crew, which is our top priority. We contacted these eight guests regarding this itinerary adjustment and provided them with authorization to rejoin the ship at Dakar, Senegal on April 2, 2024.

“Despite the series of unfortunate events outside of our control, we will be reimbursing these eight guests for their travel costs from Banjur, Gambia to Dakar, Senegal. As of this morning, all eight guests have rejoined the ship.”

  • Nine Norwegian Cruise Line passengers were reportedly left behind on the African island of São Tomé and Príncipe on March 27
  • The group was on a guided excursion that got delayed, leading them to miss the ship’s "all aboard" call
  • A statement from Norwegian Cruise Lines noted that all guests are responsible for returning to the docked ship at the designated call time
  • Eight people were able to catch up to the ship on Tuesday morning after reportedly traversing seven countries.
  • One, who had fallen ill before the incident, has safely returned to the U.S.

Multiple passengers were stranded on an island in Africa after their Norwegian Cruise Line ship reportedly left them behind. After several days of uncertainty and a trek across seven countries, they're now back on board the vessel.

On Wednesday, March 27, South Carolina couple Jill and Jay Campbell were enjoying a guided tour on the island of São Tomé and Príncipe located off the continent's western coast, ABC15 News reported at the time. The pair was with six other American and Australian passengers when they realized they wouldn’t make it back to the ship on time due to their tour taking longer than planned.

Though the tour operator contacted the cruise ship’s captain to inform them of the delay, the captain refused to let them back on the still-anchored ship when they arrived at the port because it was after the "all aboard" call, per the outlet.

The São Tomé and Príncipe Coast Guard allegedly then took them by boat directly to the ship where the captain again did not permit them to board.

The group later encountered another stranded passenger, an 80-year-old woman, who was hospitalized on the island after a cruise line tour, the outlet stated. The woman reportedly experienced memory and vision loss due to a medical emergency.

In addition to the ill passenger, the group also includes one person who is pregnant, one with a heart condition and four elderly travelers.

The majority of the group left their medications and credit cards on the ship except for the Campbells, who have reportedly paid over $5,000 for food, accommodations, and other necessities for their fellow passengers.

On Sunday, the U.S. Embassy in Angola allegedly arranged for the group to fly to the West African country of Gambia, the ship's next planned port of call, so they could reboard.

Google Maps

Unfortunately, the group discovered the cruise ship wasn’t docked at the port in Gambia as planned because it had to spend another day at sea due to low tides. ABC News 4 reports the passengers spent fifteen hours traveling through six countries to make it to the port on Sunday.

“We have to cross the ferry to get into Senegal,” Campbell told the outlet on Monday, marking their seventh country. “We just learned from the gentleman that the ferry hadn’t been working, but he said no problem, if the ferry is not working we will get another little boat and then pick up a car on the other side. And then once we get on the other side of Senegal, it’s another four-hour drive.”

In a statement to PEOPLE, Norwegian Cruise Line said, “On the afternoon of March 27, 2024, while the ship was in São Tomé and Príncipe, an African island nation, eight guests who were on the island on a private tour not organized through us missed the last tender back to the vessel, therefore not meeting the all aboard time of 3 p.m. local time."

The statement continued, “While this is a very unfortunate situation, guests are responsible for ensuring they return to the ship at the published time, which is communicated broadly over the ship’s intercom, in the daily print communication and posted just before exiting the vessel.”

The cruise line added that guests are “responsible for any necessary travel arrangements” to meet the ship at the next port and that they had each of their passports “delivered to the local port agents to retrieve” when they missed their all aboard call.

The group was finally able to catch up to the vessel. They reached Dakar, Senegal, its next port, on Monday night, PEOPLE confirmed.

After what they'd been through, Jill told NBC News in a story published on Tuesday, "We are considering whether or not we are going to board the ship. We believe there was a basic duty of care that they had forgotten about, so it does concern us." While she allowed that Norwegian technically followed protocol, she says, "I believe that they really forgot that they are people working in the hospitality industry and really the safety and well-being of the customers should be their first priority."

On Tuesday morning, the eight passengers, less the person who had fallen ill and later safely returned home to the United States, chose to board the cruise. Norwegian confirmed the news to PEOPLE in a statement.

"Despite the series of unfortunate events outside of our control, we will be reimbursing these eight guests for their travel costs from Banjur, Gambia to Dakar, Senegal. We remain in communication with the guests and are providing additional information as it becomes available,"

The Norwegian Dawn departed from Cape Town, South Africa, on March 20 for a 21-day trip that will end in Barcelona on April 10.

How these cruise passengers missed boarding, got stranded in Africa

Both Americans and Australians were left at port after an excursion ran long.

After what seemed like a dream trip, several American travelers were left stranded at port in West Africa mid-cruise while traveling from Cape Town, South Africa, to Barcelona, Spain.

Jay and Jill Campbell told ABC News Myrtle Beach affiliate WPDE that they were in the first week of a three week voyage aboard Norwegian Cruise Lines when they stopped just off the coast of West Africa.

The couple and others opted to tour the nearby island of São Tomé and Príncipe on the afternoon of March 27, and when the excursion ran late, they said they brought it to the guides' attention.

"We were like, 'our time is getting short,'" Jay Campbell recalled, at which point he said the guide let them know, "'No problem we can get you back in an hour.'"

Upon their return, the passengers said cruise officials refused to let them aboard the ship, even as the local Coast Guard had ferried the group to the anchored vessel.

"The harbormaster tried to call the ship. The captain refused the call. We sent emails to NCL the customer service emergency number," Jay Campbell said. "They said the only way for us to get in touch with the ship is via email. They're not responding to our emails."

The Campbells say they were left stranded along with four other Americans and two Australians -- of whom one is a paraplegic, one has a heart condition and one is pregnant. Some did not have credit cards or medication that was left on board.

Cruise expert Stewart Chiron, known as The Cruise Guy, told ABC News that "the bottom line was, they were hours late, the ship was ready to go."

"More than likely that the anchor was already up, and the ship was already possibly moving," he said.

He continued, "Any operation at that point to get these passengers back on the ship would have caused tremendous delays, and safety would have been a major concern."

In a statement to ABC News, a spokesperson for Norwegian Cruise Lines said, "On the afternoon of March 27, 2024, while the ship was in São Tomé and Príncipe, an African island nation, eight guests who were on the island on a private tour not organized through us missed the last tender back to the vessel, therefore not meeting the all aboard time of 3 p.m. local time."

"Our team has been working closely with the local authorities to understand the requirements and necessary visas needed for the guests to rejoin the ship at the next available port of call," they said.

The Campbells said that their eight person group spent 15 hours traveling through six countries in an attempt to rejoin the Norwegian Dawn ship in Banjul, Gambia, on April 1. However, the ship couldn't dock due to low tide, so they are now trying to get to Senegal where the ship is meant to dock on Tuesday.

The Norwegian spokesperson said, "Unfortunately the ship was unable to safely dock in the destination due to adverse weather conditions, as well as tidal restrictions that require specific timing for safe passage. The cruise line contacted the guests "regarding this itinerary adjustment and provided them with authorization to rejoin the ship at Dakar, Senegal on April 2, 2024."

In light of the "series of unfortunate events outside of our control," the spokesperson said Norwegian Cruise Lines "will be reimbursing these eight guests for their travel costs from Banjur, Gambia to Dakar, Senegal" and are still in communication with the guests to provide additional information as it becomes available.

In a separate, unrelated situation that took place coincidentally on the same day of the voyage, the spokesperson said, "An 80-year-old woman was medically disembarked after being evaluated by our onboard medical team, who thought it best that she receive further assessment and treatment as needed from a local hospital."

"In instances such as these, as the guest was released from the hospital and in a coherent state, our protocol is to contact the guest directly, as we would not have the authority to share any medical details with anyone else without their expressed consent," the spokesperson added, saying they worked with the port agent to receive updates.

"The guest has since been escorted on a flight to Lisbon, Portugal, and then put in the care of airport staff to continue her journey to the United States, where she has now made a safe return," they said.

Guide to Southern Africa

A beautifully bronzed collage of African delights

Africa conjures up images of vast open plains, wildlife encounters and iconic scenery and Southern Africa does not disappoint. The sheer expanse of the African continent is otherworldly, bringing together rugged coastlines, rich golden sands, sheltered forests and mountain ranges which are guaranteed to open the mind and enlighten the soul. Revel in the pebbly shorelines, sunlit beaches and magnificent island retreats of this gorgeously bronzed continent.

Embraced by the Indian Ocean to the southeast, Southern Africa provides some of the most extraordinary cruising grounds where visitors can marvel at the stunning islands, intriguing nations and abundant collection of unparalleled sights. This remarkable continent boasts a melting pot of cultures and elusive wildlife, though aside from Africa’s breathtaking nature it is the people of Africa who capture the hearts of all who travel here, their warmth and hospitality making it difficult not to return time and again for years to come. Extensively regarded as a conspicuous yacht charter destination, Africa is unobtrusively gaining a devoted following attracted by its distinctive way of life, exhilarating activities and natural wonders.

Cruise the Mozambique Channel and explore one of Africa’s little known jewels. Located on Africa’s south eastern coast, visit Mozambique, where the shorelines are fringed by untouched islands, dazzling white sands and swaying palm trees which contrast beautifully against the magnificent colonial buildings. Although largely undiscovered by tourism, Mozambique offers unique opportunities to admire an otherworldly culture. Admire the brightly clad women wearing capulanas and gaze on as skilled craftsmen construct dhows and fishermen make their catches with hand woven nets. Sample the delicious grilled seafood and make the most of the fantastic diving opportunities. East of Mozambique, cruise along the Mozambique Channel to Madagascar Island, a dream location for lovers of nature and wildlife. An astounding ninety percent of the island’s animal species and plants have evolved here and nowhere else making for a truly one of a kind vacation with sights and wonders to be admired only here. The diverse landscapes of Madagascar are so remote that a luxury yacht charter is the ultimate way to explore this sensational island, with national parks, snorkelling and wildlife watching to keep you busy.

To the southernmost tip, South Africa marks the end of this sun drenched continent. Discover the Cape Peninsula and explore small seaside towns before meandering amongst the beautiful winelands where you can sample some of the oldest and finest vintages in South Africa. Table Mountain is an unmissable highlight and sits majestically overlooking the bustling city. For the intrepid charter guests, why not take on the immensely rewarding challenge of a mountain hike, where spectacular views of the Atlantic and Indian Ocean can be admired.

Southern Africa is home to some of the most iridescent cities in the world. With unparalleled sights, welcoming locals and elusive endangered wildlife, it is impossible to fight against the magnetism of this superlative region.

Cruise ship was right to ditch the late passengers in africa, travel writer says.

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

Eight people have accused Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) of abandoning them on a tiny island in Africa after a private tour ran late and the group missed the embarkation cut-off time.

Four of the group are elderly and another is pregnant, and though the ship was still at anchor, they were denied boarding.

The ship, the Norwegian Dawn, set sail without them — and it was right to do so.

Once, I was late to check in for a flight. I jumped out of the taxi, sprinted to the counter (which is no mean feat when you’re hauling luggage) and arrived at the desk sweating bullets, prepared to get on my knees and grovel if it meant I’d be allowed through.

I began to tell my sob story to the lady at the desk, heart hammering and lungs gasping for air, when she politely interrupted and shook her head.

Norwegian CRUISELINE

In the nicest way possible, she said this: “Stiff bickies.” (OK, yes, I’ve paraphrased.)

Sure, the plane was still at the airport, no more than a few hundred meters from where I was standing. However, the luggage had already been loaded, the manifest had already been finalized, and the other passengers were already boarding.

There was no way they were going to let me board, nor should they have.

You see, I had been on a whale-watching tour about two-and-a-half hours south of the airport — hey, it was my last day, I wanted to make it count.

I planned it to perfection, except for one detail: We spotted a playful pod right at the very end, so the captain offered to give us some bonus time to enjoy the view.

With one eye on the magnificent mammals and the other on my watch, I held on to a flicker of hope that I might make it.

I jumped on the bus back to town, flagged down a cab and asked the driver to hurry. I launched out of the car like a 100m sprinter launches out of starting blocks and ran into the terminal.

Alas, my proverbial ship had sailed.

Was it a bummer? Absolutely. But imagine delaying the other 158 or so passengers scheduled to depart on the Boeing 737, asking the crew to extend their shifts, or holding the plane and disrupting airport traffic … all so little old me could drop off my bags, scurry through security, and find my gate.

Imagine the awkwardness if I stepped onto that plane. What do you say? “Sorry, guys, my bad, lol.”

Keep up with The Post's coverage of the Norwegian Cruise debacle

  • Eight Norwegian Cruise passengers, including a pregnant woman and an elderly man with a heart condition, were stranded on an African island without money and vital medications after the vessel left port without them.
  • A spokesperson for the cruise line claimed the passengers were left on the island “on their own or with a private tour” and missed the “all-aboard time” by over an hour, according to the company.
  • Americans Jill Campbell and her husband, Jay Campbell, said they are unsure whether they even want to resume the 20-day voyage after Norwegian Cruise Lines forgot about its “basic duty of care.”
  • The eight passengers raced through seven different countries over a span of 48 hours to make it to Senegal, where the ship docked Tuesday morning,
  • Doug and Violeta Sanders, a stranded Australian couple, have spoken out about their ordeal , saying it was “the worst experience of our lives.”
  • Julie Lenkoff, 80,  suffered a stroke during an excursion on the cruise — and was left “alone” and “helpless” to find her way back to the US, according to her family.

Check out The Post’s tips on what to do if you’re left stranded like the Norwegian Cruise passengers

That doesn’t even scratch the surface of a cruise ship’s operations. Norwegian Dawn can accommodate 3,372 people — 2,340 passengers and 1,032 crew — and this group of eight expected it to wait?

A ship’s departure time isn’t exactly a mystery.

I sailed on Norwegian Dawn in February and the departure time was published in NCL’s Freestyle Daily newsletter the night before and announced over the loudspeaker multiple times in the morning.

It was also posted on signs at the doors where guests disembark.

The golden rule is clear: Make sure you’re back on time, or the ship may sail without you.

So what do you do if you’re left behind?

Generally there are two options: Either catch up with the ship at a later port or head home.

If you’re lucky, you’ll have brought your essentials with you — your passport, phone, credit card and medication — because all of your belongings will stay on board until the end.

Please don’t get me wrong, of course I’m sympathetic to the distress of those who were left in a foreign country without the safety of the ship.

It would be scary and stressful to figure out next steps, especially for the members of the group with higher needs, and disappointing to miss out on their vacation.

However, the unfortunate reality is that ships can’t always wait.

Private tours are a whole separate issue, because while the ship will wait for official tours — those which have been organized by the cruise ship operator — to return, all bets are off for passengers taking their shore excursions into their own hands.

Unofficial tours can be slightly cheaper than those on the ship’s itinerary, with slightly more availability, so they can be attractive. However, while operators will do their best to stick to scheduled times, all bets are off once you board that bus and leave the port.

Think of it like booking multiple legs of a trip with different airlines. They’re not in the same network, they don’t owe each other anything, and they can’t guarantee that you’ll make your connection. Say the bus breaks down. Maybe someone wanders off and takes ages to return.

Perhaps the group lingers over a delicious lunch. Someone might need to stop at an ATM or a bathroom. You could get stuck in traffic. Or maybe your tour will be like mine and you’ll see something incredible that simply makes you want to pause.

And so, eight passengers were left in São Tomé and Príncipe , Africa’s second-smallest country.

“While this is a very unfortunate situation, guests are responsible for ensuring they return to the ship at the published time,” NCL said in a statement, adding that it is communicating with the guests about their next steps. It’s harsh but fair, especially since the other 3,364 (or so) people on board got it right.

Kirrily Schwarz recently sailed on Norwegian Dawn as a guest of Norwegian Cruise Line.

29 migrants rescued off small boat in trouble in the Mediterranean Sea south of Crete

  • Copy Link copied

ATHENS, Greece (AP) — A group of 29 migrants was rescued Tuesday off a crippled boat in the Mediterranean Sea south of Crete, Greek authorities said, on an increasingly busy migration route from North Africa to Europe.

A coast guard statement said the boat was located about 23.5 nautical miles (27 miles, 43 kilometers) south of Gavdos, a small island off Crete’s southern coast, by a passing merchant ship after passengers made a distress call.

The migrants were being ferried to southern Crete. No information was immediately available on their health, nationality or port of embarkation.

Southern Crete and Gavdos, 27 nautical miles off the island, have seen a substantial increase in migrant arrivals this year. Most leave from the eastern Libyan port of Tobruk, having paid smuggling gangs up to $5,000 each.

According to United Nations data, more than 1,200 people have reached the area this year, out of a total of about 9,600 who arrived in Greece by sea.

On Sunday, another 74 people were rescued off a boat south of Gavdos, which is about 29 square kilometers (11 square miles) in size and has just a few dozen residents in the winter. Two of the people on the vessel were later arrested on suspicion of belonging to a migrant-smuggling gang.
