With 57 kilometres of ocean beaches, a coastal inland waterways network measuring 260 kilometres, World Heritage rainforests, international-standard sporting facilities, a thriving arts scene and an exciting annual events schedule, there’s plenty for visitors to see and experience in our waterways city.

Add to this a world-class supplier network and marine precincts backed by a skilled workforce which caters to the needs of superyachts, their guests and crews.

Queensland

The Queensland Government has recently committed A$2.8 million towards the development of a superyacht berth at the Southport Yacht Club, proposed further superyacht facilities be developed on the Gold Coast under the Queensland Government’s Master Plan for The Spit and invested more than A$10 million in dredging facilities and works to improve access to the Coomera Marine Industry Precinct.

We recognise that it’s sometimes difficult to navigate your way through multiple websites to find what you need to know about specific destinations. To help you out, we’ve developed this guide to provide you with all the essential information you’ll need to plan your visit to the Gold Coast.

We’re excited about what the future holds. So whether you’re a repeat visitor, or you’re coming to see us for the first time, we look forward to having you drop anchor on the Gold Coast.

For international vessels entering the Gold Coast

Superyachts 50m and over in length require a pilot. Superyacht general size limitations are published in the Southport Port Procedures Manual and are based upon under keel clearance (UKC), length and area of operation. Oversized superyachts will be considered by Maritime Safety Queensland (MSQ) on a case-by-case basis, utilising a risk-based process. You are encouraged to contact MSQ during the early stages of planning the visit of an oversize vessel.

Where is the Gold Coast?

The Gold Coast is strategically located on the edge of the Asia-Pacific rim, with access to two international airports. It has a customs clearance port two nautical miles from the Seaway and boasts a 250-hectare marine precinct, which hosts world-class manufacturers and internationally renowned brands.

Stretching along 57 kilometres of coastline, it’s home to over half a million people, beautiful surfing beaches, subtropical rainforest, spectacular waterways and breathtaking scenery.

Temperatures range between an average of 21 degrees Celsius in winter to 29 degrees Celsius in summer.

Important information for international vessels

Superyachts, passengers and crew entering Australia for commercial or recreational visits are subject to customs, immigration and biosecurity controls when entering and/ or departing Australia. The Southport Yacht Club on the Gold Coast has been appointed as a Port of Entry by the Australian Government and they can help you with obtaining the clearances you’ll need for your stay.

You can contact Southport Yacht Club on +61 7 5591 8577 or on VHF Channel 74 Operating hours: Monday to Saturday: 8am–4pm, Sunday: 8am–2pm Email: [email protected] You’ll also need to file a yacht report at least 96 hours before entering Australia to let us know you’re coming.

Gold Coast Marinas Map

To encourage superyacht visits there’ve also been some recent changes to Commonwealth laws regarding superyachts and taxation arrangements. The Special Recreational Vessels Act 2019 (SRV Act) is intended to allow ‘special recreational vessels’ (superyachts) to visit Australia for up to 12 months and conduct commercial activities without being regarded as imported under customs legislation.

The SRV Act achieves this by establishing a condition for qualifying special recreational vessels to ‘opt in’ to the coastal trading licence scheme established by the Coastal Trading (Revitalising Australian Shipping) Act 2012 (Coastal Trading Act). The Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Communications administers both the SRV Act and the Coastal Trading Act.

superyachts-in-australia

Any vessel that obtains a coastal trading licence through the new condition established by the SRV Act will be subject to the Australian Border Force’s (ABF) existing arrangements for vessels operating under coastal trading licences.

Vessels that enter and operate in Australia in accordance with the SRV Act will be considered international commercial vessels rather than recreational vessels. The SRV Act does not change existing reporting and permissions for international commercial vessels operating in Australian waters under the coastal trading licence scheme. For more information, visit the Australian Customs Notice here .

How to navigate the Gold Coast

The Gold Coast Seaway is your gateway to our city’s beautiful marine network and our attractions and services. — For vessels visiting the Gold Coast, there are some general operating limitations:

A minimum under keel clearance (UKC) of 1.0 metre is required to be maintained in the Gold Coast Seaway Entrance. A minimum UKC of 0.5 metres is required in all other areas. There are also varying requirements for vessels using different channels within the Gold Coast Broadwater, including pilotage arrangements.

australia superyacht gold coast

A maximum of 65 metres length overall (LOA) has been set by Maritime Safety Queensland for vessels entering and exiting the Seaway and making their way to the Southport marina precinct via the South Channel. Vessels transiting to the Coomera marina precinct are limited to 60 metres LOA.

Oversized vessels will be considered by Maritime Safety Queensland on a case-by-case basis utilising a risk-based process for each movement. Additional requirements may include, but are not limited to, daylight, support craft escort and weather conditions. You are encouraged to contact MSQ during the early stages of planning the visit of an oversize vessel. Maritime Safety Queensland (MSQ) manages scheduling and provision of pilotage services on the Gold Coast. MSQ has an office on the Gold Coast and they’ll work with you to ensure your vessel and crew can arrive and stay safety. Further information is available on the MSQ website including the Southport Port Procedures Manual which provides further detail on movement requirements. Master/Agents are required to notify MSQ of arrival 48 hours prior but are encouraged to do so as early as possible. You can contact MSQ on +61 7 5585 1810 (during business hours) or email [email protected]

More FAQ's

Our boats are berthed at Marina Mirage. Please see the ‘contact us’ page on our website for further details and a map. Marina Mirage is about 10 mins from Surfers and 15 mins from Broadbeach.

Where can I park?

There is plentiful free parking at Marina Mirage/Mariners Cove which you are permitted to use.  Please check signage at time of parking and if parking overnight consider street parking to avoid towing.

What about other transport options?

There are lots of ways to get to the boat! The most popular (and cost effective/convenient) is often via Maxi Taxis.

I am short on time can you please help me out with catering/drinks?

Yes, we also offer catering and drinks service for your convenience. Please request our full catering list as advance bookings are required. We offer a range of catering options from grazing boards, to canapes and private chefs.

(Catering and drinks service options may be affected by Government restrictions due to Covid, please check at the time of your charter what the current restrictions are)

Do you have Eskies on board?

Yes we have Fridges & Eskies and we also provide ice.

Where can we go on our charter?

We mainly operate in the calm, protected waters of the Gold Coast Broadwater. Where to go very much depends on what you would like to do and how long your boat charter is for so please feel free to discuss this with our team. In a 3 hour charter during the day our guests usually love a swim stop at Wavebreak Island where you can enjoy the range of island activities on board. Your skipper is knowledgeable in the local area and will make recommendations based on the conditions on the day.  If you don’t wish to swim in a 3 hour charter you instead opt to sail further north along the inside of South Stradbroke Island and see the millionaires mansions at Sovereign Islands.

In the evening we will generally sail north to watch the sunset and return to the southern part of the Broadwater to enjoy the city lights after dark which are just beautiful.

Will I get seasick?

We mainly operate in the calm, protected waters of the Gold Coast Broadwater. If we go offshore (into the open ocean) there is a possibility of large waves.

Are your charters suitable for guests with limited mobility?

We have welcomed several guests on board with limited mobility. However we do realise that each individual is different in terms of ability and what they are comfortable with. Please take a look at the 360 tours on the ‘ Our Boats ‘ page for an ideal of getting around the boats and do bear in mind a big step up (or carry) is required to board the boats at the marina. Our friendly team will be happy to discuss further to ensure you and your guests are comfortable prior to making a booking.

The Gold Coast is approximately 66 kilometres south of the state capital, Brisbane, on the east coast of Australia and is famous for it’s sandy beaches, laidback lifestyle, inland waterways and great surfing spots. It is also home to theme parks such as Seaworld, Wet’n’Wild and Dreamworld.

Summer temperatures are on average 28 degrees Celsius and winter temperatures are on average 21 degrees Celsius.

A feature of the Gold Coast is the Waterfront homes and canal living. Most canal frontage homes have pontoons and the ability to dock pirate boats.  The canals were built in the 1950’s and today there are over 860 kilometres of navigable tidal waterways… nine times more than the city of Venice!

Some of the key spots are:

  • Wave Break Island – Wavebreak Island protects the Gold Coast Broadwater shores from large waves entering the Broadwater during heavy seas and storms.  Wave island is man-made and was constructed in 1986. island, constructed in 1986 as part of the Gold Coast Seaway project.  Great spot for swimming.
  • Sanctuary Cove – Built in the late 1980’s Sanctuary Cove was a sanctuary for the rich and famous.. See how the other half lives as you cruise past the Waterfront Mansions of Sovereign islands.
  • Jumpinpin Channel – Known locally as The Pin, the channel lies between North and South Stradbroke island and is renowned for fishing with catches of Bream, Tailor,  Flathead, Whiting and Trevally.
  • Scottish Prince Wreck – An historic shipwreck approximately 800 metres from shore.   The wreck is a haven for marine life with schools of yellowtail scad, silver batfish and bream often swarming in the area.

What Else Does the Gold Coast have to offer?

Surfers Paradise If you’re looking for a place that’s constantly buzzing with energy, then Surfers Paradise is definitely the spot for you. With endless nightlife options and exciting events happening throughout the year, this beach town is definitely one of a kind. Come experience all that Surfers has to offer – you won’t be disappointed!

Broad Beach Looking for some waves during your stay in Gold Coast? Look no further than Broad Beach – with its gentle surf and beautiful beaches, Broadie is perfect for surfing beginners and experienced board riders alike. Come check out the scene at one of the many beachside cafes, or take a walk through the lush parks that line the coast.

Burleigh Heads- was the birthplace of the modern professional surfing competition with the first man-on man competition held here and is renowned throughout the surfing world for its unique waves. The Burleigh headland is home to the 27 hectare Burleigh Headland National Park. The National Park is a great vantage point for Whale watching and has several popular hiking and walking trails.  The park is also popular for bird watching where you can often see white-bellied sea-eagles riding the ridge drafts.

Beaches – the Gold Coast is home to some of the best and most consistent waves in Australia and boasts 70 kilometres of beach and four break points. The most famous is undoubtedly Surfers Paradise beach, hailed as one of Australia’s most pristine beaches because of it’s three kilometre strip of golden sand. The beach attracts surfers, swimmers and joggers from around the world.

An inexhaustible source of adventure, Australia is the quintessential superyacht destination. Overflowing with iconic destinations that bask in the country’s infectious laid-back style, it is no wonder Australia is an enduring favourite for sport, adventure and natural wonders.

With an eclectic mix of unique experiences, there are memories to be made in Australia that simply cannot be found anywhere else. Escape to a country that in one moment will leave you in awe at its untouched natural beauty, and the next throw you into the very heart of the some of the world’s most exhilarating events. Beaches are more than a spectacular blend of sand and sea in this colourful country; they’re a lifestyle and inhabit every piece of Australia’s coastal character, from the boho fashion of the locals to the delicious seafood cuisine served in waterfront restaurants.

Australia boasts an all-year-round cruising calendar, outstanding tourism experiences and world-renowned refit and maintenance facilities that welcome the global superyacht fleet. For those willing to indulge their inner hedonist, Australia is the ultimate superyacht playground.

Unique experiences, all-year-round

Summer and Winter cruising seasons afford Australia an irresistible outdoor spirit that lasts 365 days a year – rather fortunate given the abundance of experiences that await…

A country surrounded by water, Australia is a superyacht haven. Ranging from unspoilt, secluded stretches of glowing white sands to towel-strewn golden paradises and rough surfing havens, beach-lovers will never be disappointed here. Diversity reigns supreme in this huge island nation, where a cruising itinerary can encompass an amazing range of sights not found anywhere else in the world.

From the stunning coral reefs of Queensland, to the spectacular waterways of New South Wales and the crocodile-filled waterholes of the Northern Territory, Australia is a truly unique yachting experience. The kaleidoscopic colours of the Great Barrier Reef are the pinnacle of any diver’s fantasy. From Port Douglas down to Bundaberg stretches 300,000 square kilometres of coral cays, brimming with marine treasures and exquisite sea life. There is simply no better destination for water-based activities.

Not all of the adventure is concentrated at sea. Step inland and discover Australia’s diverse flora and fauna, along with a rich Aboriginal culture. Stop off to play with kangaroos, koalas and wombats or sample fine wines at one of Australia’s exemplary vineyards. The rugged beauty of The Kimberley and Tropical North Queensland presents the opportunity to learn something new. Immerse yourself in 50,000-year-old Aboriginal rock art, brush up on your bush tucker skills or get an awe-inspiring perspective of it all from the sky.

For those who can’t stay too long away from the hustle and bustle of a city, world-class marina facilities in Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne can take you right back into the action. Sydney is perfect for a long weekend of luxury comforts, fine dining, and high-end shopping. New Year’s Eve onboard a superyacht with the backdrop of Sydney’s Opera House and Harbour Bridge is certainly one for every owner’s bucket list. Head down to Melbourne, the events capital, for some of the world’s best events. From the Harbour, you are a short tender cruise from the major sporting events held throughout the year, including the Grand Prix, Melbourne Cup and Australian Open. Alternatively, a short walk down the newly renovated dockside will bring you to the Marvel Stadium, where leading artists flock to perform.

Indulge in infinite luxury

No matter where in the country your itinerary may take you, Australia’s highlife is never far away.

Premium superyacht marinas scattered across the islands lead into luxurious five-star resorts, leaving your yacht in good care while you delve into an authentic barefoot island retreat. Ideal for groups carrying a wide demographic, the Whitsunday Islands offer everything from chic beach glamour to high-octane water sports.

Should you wish to venture into Australia’s richly diverse regions, the Luxury Lodges of Australia will welcome you in sumptuous style. A collection of the finest lodges and camps around Australia, Luxury Lodges offers over 250 individual experiences and activities that connect guests to Australia’s most breath-taking locations, unlocking their curiosity and adventure-seeking spirit. The standards of comfort and service in Australia’s high-end heritage sites are parallel to that of a stay onboard one of the finest superyachts. Whether overlooking the Ningaloo Reef on Australia’s West Coast, staying in the world-renowned Barossa Valley wine region in Southern Australia or dining underneath the iconic Ayers Rock in the World Heritage listed Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, the Lodges deliver a truly special experience.

If you prefer not to stray too far from the natural playground of the Great Barrier Reef, Cairns and the Whitsunday Islands offer a selection of high-end luxury resorts. Surrounded by a bewitching blend of sublime landscapes, intriguing marine life and infinitely perfect anchorages, the tropical coast marinas offer something for every superyacht party. Superyacht owners have enthused that being able to explore the coastal towns without the need for a security detail has added a special touch to their Australian exploits.

World-class superyacht facilities

Nowhere else in the world can a superyacht sit so detached and isolated yet still be within a short cruise from premier, state-of-the-art shipyard facilities. Australia has a thriving refit and maintenance industry that has benefitted recently from significant investment to cater to larger vessels, meaning no project is too complex.

All along the East Coast there is an array of shipyards that constantly makes sure the South Pacific superyacht fleet is well serviced and pristine. The capabilities available are not to be understated. In Cairns, the world’s largest Mobile Boat Hoist at BSE Maritime Solutions gives the area significant pulling, and lifting, power. The City can accommodate superyachts of up to 140m in length, while highly experienced agents take great care in providing everything needed for a seamless transition from or to life at sea. Cairns itself provides the perfect setting for a superyacht homeport, situated between the Wet Tropics Rainforest and the Great Barrier Reef, two World Heritage listed natural wonders.

Queensland’s vibrant South East region boasts a similarly impressive offering. The well-established facilities in Brisbane and the Gold Coast have given the green light to significant investments as they prepare for an influx of visiting superyachts. Rivergate Marina & Shipyard has its own prominent international reputation, having completed over 250 superyacht projects since opening in 2006. Rivergate’s positioning on the Brisbane River provides easy access to both the bustling city and the immaculate cruising grounds of Australia and the South Pacific.

The Australia Marine Complex in Henderson, Western Australia is home to Echo Yachts and Silver Yachts, both multi-award-winning superyacht builders with glowing international reputations. The delivery of 84m trimaran White Rabbit by Echo Yachts in 2018 earned worldwide acclaim for reimagining the possibilities of comfort and efficiency onboard a superyacht. Superyacht projects undertaken in Australia not only benefit from the thousands of specialised trades that surround each facility and the historic expertise in aluminium, but also from the significant exchange rate advantage of the Australian Dollar.

New possibilities

With the intimacy of a small island and the might of a first world country, Australia is the South Pacific superyacht hub with a perfect balance to ensure there is never a dull moment. Some of the world’s largest superyachts frequent the sanctuary of Tropical North Queensland’s marinas as a homeport and gateway to the excitement of the South Pacific islands. Hollywood star Will Smith became the first to officially charter a foreign flagged superyacht in Australia following the passage of new legislation in 2019. Since then, interest in superyacht charters has blossomed from the tropical northern areas down to the isolated splendour of Tasmania.

Gold Coast gives berth to a new ambition as world super yacht HQ

The Gold Coast has set its sights on becoming the new “superyacht capital,” opening Australia’s largest superyacht berth at Southport Yacht Club this week to snare a major share of the booming billion-dollar global trend.

The 68-metre Lady Christine superyacht, worth $82 million, that’s been in Queensland for a multi-million dollar facelift at the Gold Coast marine precinct. It’s understood to be being used by George Clooney and Julia Roberts for their latest blockbuster being filmed in Queensland. (Image: supplied)

Gold Coast mayor Tom Tate said the opening of the $9 million berth was the city’s “red-carpet moment for the largest superyachts in the world.”

Tate said the facility was designed to accommodate what was then the biggest superyacht in the world, which was the $45 million superyacht Senses owned by Google co-founder Larry Page.

“This facility is 180m long and when we designed it, I said what is the biggest superyacht there is? If the biggest superyacht can fit there, that means everybody’s welcome,” Tate said.

Senses has since been eclipsed in size and scale by the gargantuan $500 million, 127-metre superyacht called Y721 owned by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos.

Tate said the Gold Coast’s new superyacht berth, co-funded by the State Government which has also contributed funding for high-tech computer simulations to ensure the safety of large vessels on their way to the new superyacht facility, would be a drawcard to bring owners and sailors of the luxury craft to Queensland.

The Covid pandemic has proved a massive boon for the global superyacht industry, with latest Yacht Industry figures showing the global market was estimated to grow from US$7.4 billion in 2020 to US$10.8 billion by 2026.

As well as Queensland being a destination for the luxury craft, Australian buyers have joined those jumping into the multimillion-dollar trend by splashing out on luxury superyachts, often buying sight unseen.

The splurge has meant an increase in the number of superyachts being delivered to buyers in Queensland and along the east coast of up to four times higher than pre-Covid levels.

Jason Roberts, managing director of Brisbane-based Aurora Global Logistics, Australia’s leading international yacht transport and customs brokerage, said that in the past year there had been close to 40 superyachts brought into Australia, compared to around 10 superyachts in a “normal” year.

Roberts said the superyacht arrivals were also a boon for Queensland and Australian ports.

“Every yacht that comes in usually spends 10 per cent of its value every 12 months,” he said.

“So, if you’ve got a $30 million yacht, it’s spending $3 million per year in the local economy.”

Yacht Charters Gold Coast

Five-star fun in the sun on australia’s gold coast, best time to visit.

australia superyacht gold coast

Activities & Experiences

Whether you’re looking for a decadent, luxurious afternoon or a thrill seeking adventure, the Gold Coast has something for you. Invite all your closest friends for a day of exploring, and cap it all off with a gourmet dinner onboard as you’re whisked back to shore.

Before setting sail, consider adding these must-do activities to your schedule:

VISIT THE THEME PARKS

No mention of the Gold Coast would be complete without discussing the theme park options. One of the area's biggest drawcards, families from all over Australia (and the world) travel to Warner Bros Movie World, Sea World, Dreamworld or Wet n’ Wild for a day of heart-pumping fun.

Ride thrilling roller coasters, meet some of your favourite movie characters and spot fun loving dolphins demonstrating natural behaviours. Get in early to beat the queues and don't forget sunscreen!

SEE THE SKYPOINT OBSERVATION DECK

Located in iconic Surfers Paradise, the Q1 building rises 230 metres above sea level, dominating the city skyline. From the top of the building the SkyPoint observation deck provides panoramic views of the stunning Gold Coast. If you’re feeling adventurous, try the SkyPoint Climb. Australia’s highest external climb, this adventure departs from the 77th level of the Q1 building. Participants will be guided to the eagle's nest located 270 metres above the ground below. Enjoy 360° views of the beautiful skyline and toast your success at the 77th floor Bistro+Bar.

DINE AT KIYOMI

Tucked away inside the glittering Star Casino is the mouthwatering Kiyomi japanese restaurant. Visionary Executive Head Chef Chase Kojima has created a delectable menu of authentic Tokyo inspired dishes with a modern twist. Put your trust in the chef by dining on a pre-set menu of small plates including tender Wagyu beef with an eel and kombu jus. Bookings are essential as this is one of the Gold Coast's most talked about establishments.

TAKE TO THE SKIES

If there’s one thing the Gold Coast does best, it’s luxury and excess without apology. What could be more luxurious than taking a private helicopter tour above this golden coastline. We recommend flying to Sirromet Wines, the largest and most awarded wine producer in Queensland.

Have a helicopter drop you right at the cellar door. Customisable tours are also available. If you fly with Gold Coast Helitours, you can even have Michelin star chef Frank Meijer be your pilot for the day as he takes you to a scenic location for a gourmet picnic.

‘Look at my f***ing car’: Road rage brawl

A 15-year old schoolgirl has been hailed a hero for steering a bus carrying 25 students to safety when the driver suffered a heart attack.

The Aquinas College bus crashed on Southport Nerang Road at Ashmore on the Gold Coast about 3.20pm Monday.

Witnesses said the driver “cried out and grabbed his chest,” then became unresponsive.

A quick thinking female student who was sitting in the front seat of the bus grabbed the steering wheel, and guided the bus into traffic lights to avoid other vehicles at a busy intersection.

Queensland Ambulance Service senior operations supervisor John Nolan told The Gold Coast Bulletin the driver lost consciousness for a period of time when the girl came to his aid.

He said her brave actions saved the other 25 students from serious harm as she steered the bus away from other traffic.

“She removed his foot from the accelerator and his hands from the steering wheel and she kept the bus straight as it slowed down,” he said.

“She has brought it to a safe stop on what is a very busy road. And they had just passed a very busy intersection, so it could have been a bad situation.

“It was a very brave and very courageous thing for her to do and she has saved all her fellow school mates from any harm.”

Emergency services rushed to 70-year old bus driver to the Gold Coast University Hospital in a serious condition.

“I did say ‘well done’ to her. She was a little bit flustered and some of the other students were a little emotional,” Mr Nolan said.

The bus took down a traffic light. Picture: Nine Gold Coast News

“Some teachers arrived soon after and walked the students back to school but all those students are safe because of her actions and she should be very proud.”

Aquinas College principal Marcus Richardson praised the action of students and staff who were at the scene.

“Fortunately, no one was hurt, and all students safely returned to the College,” he said.

“As a College, our primary concern remains the safety, wellbeing, and support of students.

“I would like to commend the actions of the students and staff involved today to ensure that all members of our school community remained safe.”

A rideshare giant is set to cut its prices by an average of less than 5 cent in a move that has sparked concerns for driver rights.

This is the moment a woman charged at an influencer’s car and jumped on the windscreen, causing it to smash.

An alleged road rage brawl has erupted between a group of men, with one arming himself with a metal steering lock and another with a shop sign.

Live Moment Police cancel alert after missing Gold Coast children found, man charged

A sign saying 'Welcome to Mt Warren Park' on the edge of a 7-Eleven petrol station driveway

Police launch a criminal investigation after a man allegedly leaves three children alone in a car overnight in Queensland's south-east.

The 27-year-old man, who is known to the children, is in custody charged with child cruelty offences.

What's next?

Police are hoping to speak with the children as part of their investigation into what happened.

A man has been charged after allegedly leaving three young children alone in a car overnight in South-East Queensland.

Police say the children — a three-year-old girl and boys aged five and six — were found at a service station in Mount Warren Park, south of Brisbane, about 7am.

Acting Detecting Superintendent Mark White said the children were reported missing after police were called to a disturbance at a Slacks Creek address about 10pm on Sunday where a 27-year-old man from Paradise Point on the Gold Coast was arrested.

"Subsequently from that disturbance at Slacks Creek ... the issue of the location of the children was raised," Acting Detecting Superintendent Mark White said.

"The information we have is that [the children] have been in [a] vehicle overnight by themselves," he said.

Police will allege the man failed to provide reasonable provision for the supervision and care for three children known to him.

He has been charged with three counts each of cruelty to children under 16 years and leaving a child under 12 unattended.

Mother, police 'very relieved'

The 27-year-old man is due to face Beenleigh Magistrates Court on Tuesday.

"We will be conducting a further criminal investigation as to why those children were in a car by themselves," Detective Acting Superintendent White said.

"You can't leave children unattended, especially children of that age.

"That's going to be the core focus of our investigation going forward."

He said the children's mother was "very, very relieved" they were found safe.

"Having been in the police for as long as I have in this area, you do get really concerned and we're all relieved all three of them are safe because they are very young.

"We've been liaising with her from the time we became aware of this and providing her with as much support as we possibly can."

Investigating officers are still appealing for information about the blue Hyundai hatchback's movements between the Gold Coast and Logan yesterday.

Anyone who saw the vehicle with the Queensland registration 205 SKW between 4:30pm Sunday and 7am on Monday is urged to contact police.

Live Moment

Look back at how ABC readers and other Australians responded to this live moment.

'I really want to thank the community'

Detective Acting Superintendent White says he can't "reiterate enough how grateful we are for the community's assistance".

"To help us in trying to ensure young children are safe and well," he says. "I really want to thank the community because that's our main priority when were looking at young children who are very vulnerable."

This is where we'll leave today's live coverage.

Children 'okay' but undergoing medical assessment, police say

Detective Acting Superintendent White says support is being offered to the mother of the children.

"The main thing now is getting her reunited with her three kids," he says.

He says the children seemed "okay", but they are undergoing medical assessment.

Police say a 27-year-old man is in custody

Detective Acting Superintendent White says a 27-year-old man, known to the children, is in police custody.

"We will be conducting a further criminal investigation as to why those children were in a car overnight by themselves at Mount Warren Park," he says.

The Socceroos were placed in Pot Two for the recent third round draw and were slotted in a formidable looking section, containing perennial qualifiers Japan and Saudi Arabia. How AFC qualifying works How AFC qualifying works

Asia has eight direct slots for the FIFA World Cup 26™, with the top two nations in each of the three third round groups securing qualification . Teams finishing third and fourth will advance to the fourth round, where an additional two places are available while the fifth round will determine the region’s representative at the FIFA Intercontinental Play-off Tournament.

What they said What they said

Long-serving Australia coach Graham Arnold spoke with FIFA earlier this year and confirmed his belief that the team was building towards a new level of achievement.

australia superyacht gold coast

“I think we’re on the edge of doing something special. What really frustrated me after the Asian Cup and knocked me about was that I’m sick to death of the Socceroos being the hard-luck story of just getting beaten by a top nation," he said.

“For example, Argentina at the World Cup and then Mexico when we were up 2-0, England - a 1-0 loss when we could have or should have won - and then losing in the last minute against South Korea in the Asian Cup. I said to the boys that I’m sick of us being the hard-luck story.”

Dustin Martin is '100 per cent' heading to the Gold Coast Suns in 2025, says AFL great: 'It's done'

  •  Dustin Martin will sign with the Suns says David Schwarz
  •  Schwarz says he is '100 per cent' sure of the news
  •  Martin's future has been up in the air this season

Tigers superstar Dustin Martin will leave Richmond to sign with Gold Coast at the end of the 2024 season, according to Demons great David Schwarz.

Martin, 33, recently celebrated his 300th game at Punt Road, but speculation over the two-time Brownlow Medalist's future has been rife amid reports he is considering walking away from footy for good.

Martin has also been linked with a move north, away from the AFL bubble of Melbourne , with reports that a reunion with former Tigers coach Damien Hardwick could be on the cards.

Schwarz is absolutely certain that Martin will join up with the Suns next season.

'I'll give you 100 per cent. And this isn't 97 per cent or 98 per cent,' the footy great told SEN radio.

'100 per cent Dustin Martin will be playing at the Gold Coast next year on a two-year contract.

'You can take it to the bank. Put it in the bank right now and collect the interest. It's done.

'You will see that he will be playing for the Gold Coast next year and I reckon you'll find he plays the majority of home games and travel might not be a big option for him.

'I think what he brings is a bit of star factor and people through the gates and he is a great leader on the training track and on the field.

'Sometimes actions speak louder than words, but when he talks he commands enormous respect and for a young group, it's only benefits that he brings.

'He's got his outside life under control. He's mature. His example is exactly what the Suns need. He brings marketing dollars, he's got a great relationship with the coach, he knows the system and he goes up there in a playing and behind the scenes role.

'It's just a win-win. Richmond gets a nice pick for him and he gets another opportunity and I think everybody wins in this.'

Nine's footy reporter Tom Morris also believes a reunion with Hardwick might eventuate.

'It's absolutely in play and this hasn't changed all year,' said Morris on Tuesday.

'As it sits, it's more the Martin camp pushing it, than Gold Coast chasing him. The Suns are open to the idea, but not yet wedded to it.'

Morris added that Martin would need to accept a seven-figure paycut if he is to move to the Suns, and is convinced that the 33-year-old's time at Punt Road will be over shortly.

'His agent Ralph Carr said he is weighing up his options,' Morris continued.

'I have spoken to multiple people close to Dusty this afternoon who believe his time at Punt Rd is coming to an end and he will either join the Suns or retire.

'That is my strong belief too, that he only has a handful of games left in the yellow and black.'

Martin did not train on Tuesday as he is recovering from a lower back injury sustained during the team's loss to Carlton on Sunday.

The 33-year-old finished with just seven disposals in the 20.11 (131) to 10.10 (70) defeat - the lowest tally of his 301-game career.

'He just seized up,' Tigers coach Adam Yze said.

'He tried to go back out there for one more rotation and he was just battling, so it was just pointless.

'I'm not sure if he's ever been subbed before but against a quality team like Carlton you need 18 fit guys out there.

'So for him to put his hand up and say his back's a bit too sore is a credit to him.'

Exotic species flags differentiate locally introduced species from native species.

Naturalized : Exotic population is self-sustaining, breeding in the wild, persisting for many years, and not maintained through ongoing releases (including vagrants from Naturalized populations). These count in official eBird totals and, where applicable, have been accepted by regional bird records committee(s).

Provisional : Either: 1) member of exotic population that is breeding in the wild, self-propagating, and has persisted for multiple years, but not yet Naturalized; 2) rarity of uncertain provenance, with natural vagrancy or captive provenance both considered plausible. When applicable, eBird generally defers to bird records committees for records formally considered to be of "uncertain provenance". Provisional species count in official eBird totals.

Escapee : Exotic species known or suspected to be escaped or released, including those that have bred but don't yet fulfill the criteria for Provisional. Escapee exotics do not count in official eBird totals.
