With 57 kilometres of ocean beaches, a coastal inland waterways network measuring 260 kilometres, World Heritage rainforests, international-standard sporting facilities, a thriving arts scene and an exciting annual events schedule, there’s plenty for visitors to see and experience in our waterways city.

Add to this a world-class supplier network and marine precincts backed by a skilled workforce which caters to the needs of superyachts, their guests and crews.

The Queensland Government has recently committed A$2.8 million towards the development of a superyacht berth at the Southport Yacht Club, proposed further superyacht facilities be developed on the Gold Coast under the Queensland Government’s Master Plan for The Spit and invested more than A$10 million in dredging facilities and works to improve access to the Coomera Marine Industry Precinct.

We recognise that it’s sometimes difficult to navigate your way through multiple websites to find what you need to know about specific destinations. To help you out, we’ve developed this guide to provide you with all the essential information you’ll need to plan your visit to the Gold Coast.

We’re excited about what the future holds. So whether you’re a repeat visitor, or you’re coming to see us for the first time, we look forward to having you drop anchor on the Gold Coast.

For international vessels entering the Gold Coast

Superyachts 50m and over in length require a pilot. Superyacht general size limitations are published in the Southport Port Procedures Manual and are based upon under keel clearance (UKC), length and area of operation. Oversized superyachts will be considered by Maritime Safety Queensland (MSQ) on a case-by-case basis, utilising a risk-based process. You are encouraged to contact MSQ during the early stages of planning the visit of an oversize vessel.

Important information for international vessels

Superyachts, passengers and crew entering Australia for commercial or recreational visits are subject to customs, immigration and biosecurity controls when entering and/ or departing Australia. The Southport Yacht Club on the Gold Coast has been appointed as a Port of Entry by the Australian Government and they can help you with obtaining the clearances you’ll need for your stay.

You can contact Southport Yacht Club on +61 7 5591 8577 or on VHF Channel 74 Operating hours: Monday to Saturday: 8am–4pm, Sunday: 8am–2pm Email: [email protected] You’ll also need to file a yacht report at least 96 hours before entering Australia to let us know you’re coming.

Gold Coast Marinas Map

To encourage superyacht visits there’ve also been some recent changes to Commonwealth laws regarding superyachts and taxation arrangements. The Special Recreational Vessels Act 2019 (SRV Act) is intended to allow ‘special recreational vessels’ (superyachts) to visit Australia for up to 12 months and conduct commercial activities without being regarded as imported under customs legislation.

The SRV Act achieves this by establishing a condition for qualifying special recreational vessels to ‘opt in’ to the coastal trading licence scheme established by the Coastal Trading (Revitalising Australian Shipping) Act 2012 (Coastal Trading Act). The Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Communications administers both the SRV Act and the Coastal Trading Act.

Any vessel that obtains a coastal trading licence through the new condition established by the SRV Act will be subject to the Australian Border Force’s (ABF) existing arrangements for vessels operating under coastal trading licences.

Vessels that enter and operate in Australia in accordance with the SRV Act will be considered international commercial vessels rather than recreational vessels. The SRV Act does not change existing reporting and permissions for international commercial vessels operating in Australian waters under the coastal trading licence scheme. How to navigate the Gold Coast

The Gold Coast Seaway is your gateway to our city’s beautiful marine network and our attractions and services. — For vessels visiting the Gold Coast, there are some general operating limitations:

A minimum under keel clearance (UKC) of 1.0 metre is required to be maintained in the Gold Coast Seaway Entrance. A minimum UKC of 0.5 metres is required in all other areas. There are also varying requirements for vessels using different channels within the Gold Coast Broadwater, including pilotage arrangements.

australia superyacht gold coast

A maximum of 65 metres length overall (LOA) has been set by Maritime Safety Queensland for vessels entering and exiting the Seaway and making their way to the Southport marina precinct via the South Channel. Vessels transiting to the Coomera marina precinct are limited to 60 metres LOA.

Oversized vessels will be considered by Maritime Safety Queensland on a case-by-case basis utilising a risk-based process for each movement. Additional requirements may include, but are not limited to, daylight, support craft escort and weather conditions. You are encouraged to contact MSQ during the early stages of planning the visit of an oversize vessel. Maritime Safety Queensland (MSQ) manages scheduling and provision of pilotage services on the Gold Coast. MSQ has an office on the Gold Coast and they’ll work with you to ensure your vessel and crew can arrive and stay safety. Further information is available on the MSQ website including the Southport Port Procedures Manual which provides further detail on movement requirements. Master/Agents are required to notify MSQ of arrival 48 hours prior but are encouraged to do so as early as possible. You can contact MSQ on +61 7 5585 1810 (during business hours) or email [email protected]

Gold Coast gives berth to a new ambition as world super yacht HQ

The Gold Coast has set its sights on becoming the new “superyacht capital,” opening Australia’s largest superyacht berth at Southport Yacht Club this week to snare a major share of the booming billion-dollar global trend.

The 68-metre Lady Christine superyacht, worth $82 million, that’s been in Queensland for a multi-million dollar facelift at the Gold Coast marine precinct. It’s understood to be being used by George Clooney and Julia Roberts for their latest blockbuster being filmed in Queensland. (Image: supplied)

Gold Coast mayor Tom Tate said the opening of the $9 million berth was the city’s “red-carpet moment for the largest superyachts in the world.”

Tate said the facility was designed to accommodate what was then the biggest superyacht in the world, which was the $45 million superyacht Senses owned by Google co-founder Larry Page.

“This facility is 180m long and when we designed it, I said what is the biggest superyacht there is? If the biggest superyacht can fit there, that means everybody’s welcome,” Tate said.

Senses has since been eclipsed in size and scale by the gargantuan $500 million, 127-metre superyacht called Y721 owned by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos.

Tate said the Gold Coast’s new superyacht berth, co-funded by the State Government which has also contributed funding for high-tech computer simulations to ensure the safety of large vessels on their way to the new superyacht facility, would be a drawcard to bring owners and sailors of the luxury craft to Queensland.

The Covid pandemic has proved a massive boon for the global superyacht industry, with latest Yacht Industry figures showing the global market was estimated to grow from US$7.4 billion in 2020 to US$10.8 billion by 2026.

As well as Queensland being a destination for the luxury craft, Australian buyers have joined those jumping into the multimillion-dollar trend by splashing out on luxury superyachts, often buying sight unseen.

The splurge has meant an increase in the number of superyachts being delivered to buyers in Queensland and along the east coast of up to four times higher than pre-Covid levels.

Jason Roberts, managing director of Brisbane-based Aurora Global Logistics, Australia’s leading international yacht transport and customs brokerage, said that in the past year there had been close to 40 superyachts brought into Australia, compared to around 10 superyachts in a “normal” year.

Roberts said the superyacht arrivals were also a boon for Queensland and Australian ports.

“Every yacht that comes in usually spends 10 per cent of its value every 12 months,” he said.

“So, if you’ve got a $30 million yacht, it’s spending $3 million per year in the local economy.”

Some of the key spots are:

  • Wave Break Island – Wavebreak Island protects the Gold Coast Broadwater shores from large waves entering the Broadwater during heavy seas and storms.  Wave island is man-made and was constructed in 1986. island, constructed in 1986 as part of the Gold Coast Seaway project.  Great spot for swimming.
  • Sanctuary Cove – Built in the late 1980’s Sanctuary Cove was a sanctuary for the rich and famous.. See how the other half lives as you cruise past the Waterfront Mansions of Sovereign islands.
  • Jumpinpin Channel – Known locally as The Pin, the channel lies between North and South Stradbroke island and is renowned for fishing with catches of Bream, Tailor,  Flathead, Whiting and Trevally.
  • Scottish Prince Wreck – An historic shipwreck approximately 800 metres from shore.   The wreck is a haven for marine life with schools of yellowtail scad, silver batfish and bream often swarming in the area.

What Else Does the Gold Coast have to offer?

Surfers Paradise If you’re looking for a place that’s constantly buzzing with energy, then Surfers Paradise is definitely the spot for you. With endless nightlife options and exciting events happening throughout the year, this beach town is definitely one of a kind. Come experience all that Surfers has to offer – you won’t be disappointed!

Look no further than Broad Beach – with its gentle surf and beautiful beaches, Broadie is perfect for surfing beginners and experienced board riders alike. Come check out the scene at one of the many beachside cafes, or take a walk through the lush parks that line the coast.

Burleigh Heads- was the birthplace of the modern professional surfing competition with the first man-on man competition held here and is renowned throughout the surfing world for its unique waves. The Burleigh headland is home to the 27 hectare Burleigh Headland National Park. The National Park is a great vantage point for Whale watching and has several popular hiking and walking trails.  The park is also popular for bird watching where you can often see white-bellied sea-eagles riding the ridge drafts.

Beaches – the Gold Coast is home to some of the best and most consistent waves in Australia and boasts 70 kilometres of beach and four break points. The most famous is undoubtedly Surfers Paradise beach, hailed as one of Australia’s most pristine beaches because of it’s three kilometre strip of golden sand. The beach attracts surfers, swimmers and joggers from around the world.

The Australian Superyacht Rendezvous is back at GCCM!

Australia and asia pacific region on show to the world of superyachts: australian superyacht rendezvous 2024.

australia superyacht gold coast

Australia and the broader Asia Pacific region’s growing superyacht movement will be celebrated when the fourth edition of Australian Superyacht Rendezvous is staged on 17 and 18 May 2024 at Australia’s most awarded marina, Gold Coast City Marina and Shipyard (GCCM) in Queensland, Australia.

Trenton Gay, CEO of GCCM and organiser of the 2024 made the announcement today at Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show in Florida – the largest in-water boat show in the world – where he is attending with a contingent of Australian representatives and businesses all highly committed to the international promotion of Australia’s unrivalled charter experiences and world-class marine refit and repair services.

“We are delighted to announce the fourth edition of Australia’s leading event for superyacht enthusiasts will be staged over two memorable days in May 2024 to showcase why Australia and the Asia Pacific region is such an ideal choice for global superyachts,” Mr Gay said.

Australian Superyacht Rendezvous will assemble an elite and diverse fleet of around 20 of the finest superyachts for charter or sale currently in Australia along with international and Australian guests with a personal or business interest in what Australia and the Asia Pacific region can offer superyachts.

“Past editions of Australian Superyacht Rendezvous have attracted international guests from Monaco, Hong Kong, Tahiti, New Zealand, Thailand, UK, USA, Canada, Vanuatu, Cook Islands, Indonesia and Singapore and we look forward to welcoming an even bigger contingent of international attendees in 2024,” he said.

“As more superyachts across the globe look to migrate to the southern hemisphere – our ongoing message to the world is that Australia is superyacht ready with pristine cruising grounds and marine refit and repair infrastructure that is second to none in the world.

“Australia offers affordable and high-quality marine skills, expertise and reputation to ensure that superyachts can be safely, securely based, and serviced while accessing cruising grounds across the Asia Pacific region.

“It is also widely anticipated that Australia will welcome an influx of superyachts when it hosts the Olympic Games in Brisbane, Queensland in 2032 so now is an ideal time for superyacht internationals to learn more about Australia as a superyacht host destination.”

There are expected to be more than 6600 superyachts worldwide by 2025 and currently, around 200 are based in Australia (*).

In 2023, globally it is believed there are 1203 new superyacht project builds underway (**) according to Boat International’s 2023 Global Order Book.

Superyacht Australia have forecast that by 2025, Australia’s superyacht industry will be valued at $4.346 billion and support 33,186 marine jobs, the highest concentration of which will be in Queensland (***).

Yacht Charters Gold Coast

Five-star fun in the sun on australia’s gold coast, best time to visit.

australia superyacht gold coast

Activities & Experiences

Whether you’re looking for a decadent, luxurious afternoon or a thrill seeking adventure, the Gold Coast has something for you. Invite all your closest friends for a day of exploring, and cap it all off with a gourmet dinner onboard as you’re whisked back to shore.

Before setting sail, consider adding these must-do activities to your schedule:

No mention of the Gold Coast would be complete without discussing the theme park options. One of the area's biggest drawcards, families from all over Australia (and the world) travel to Warner Bros Movie World, Sea World, Dreamworld or Wet n’ Wild for a day of heart-pumping fun.

Ride thrilling roller coasters, meet some of your favourite movie characters and spot fun loving dolphins demonstrating natural behaviours. Get in early to beat the queues and don't forget sunscreen!

Located in iconic Surfers Paradise, the Q1 building rises 230 metres above sea level, dominating the city skyline. From the top of the building the SkyPoint observation deck provides panoramic views of the stunning Gold Coast. If you’re feeling adventurous, try the SkyPoint Climb. Australia’s highest external climb, this adventure departs from the 77th level of the Q1 building. Participants will be guided to the eagle's nest located 270 metres above the ground below. Enjoy 360° views of the beautiful skyline and toast your success at the 77th floor Bistro+Bar.

Tucked away inside the glittering Star Casino is the mouthwatering Kiyomi japanese restaurant. Visionary Executive Head Chef Chase Kojima has created a delectable menu of authentic Tokyo inspired dishes with a modern twist. Put your trust in the chef by dining on a pre-set menu of small plates including tender Wagyu beef with an eel and kombu jus. Bookings are essential as this is one of the Gold Coast's most talked about establishments.

If there’s one thing the Gold Coast does best, it’s luxury and excess without apology. What could be more luxurious than taking a private helicopter tour above this golden coastline. We recommend flying to Sirromet Wines, the largest and most awarded wine producer in Queensland.

Have a helicopter drop you right at the cellar door. Customisable tours are also available. If you fly with Gold Coast Helitours, you can even have Michelin star chef Frank Meijer be your pilot for the day as he takes you to a scenic location for a gourmet picnic.

They're Australia's most popular coastal cities but data shows a liveability decline may be turning people away

An aerial image showing a waterway, the Gold Coast skyline and the ocean behind on a clear, sunny day.

They are home to subtropical beaches that city slickers dream of, but for some the coastal city lifestyle might not be as fun as it looks.

A trend is emerging showing that "internal migrants" are moving away from the Gold and Sunshine coasts, according to the latest Regional Movers Index.

While the movements might be relatively small so far, Regional Australia Institute's CEO Liz Ritchie said it was a trend and a "livability factor" was having an impact.

The quarterly report found the Gold Coast and Noosa on the Sunshine Coast lost residents to other regional areas more than any other regional city, with outflows of -3.7 per cent and -2.5 per cent respectively.

Busy afternoon traffic on the M1 Pacific Motorway heading southbound out of Brisbane.

Both cities are still the most attractive locations for those moving out of Australian capital cities overall, but Ms Ritchie said capital city migrants could arrive to find painful traffic , busy hospitals , and increasingly out of reach housing .

"The dream is not always what they presume the dream might be," Ms Ritchie said.

"They're then looking to move beyond those locations into further afield regional locations."

Greater Geelong, Moorabool west of Melbourne, and Queensland's Fraser Coast rounded out the top five most popular regional areas for internal migration.

Chrystal blue waters and swimmers.

Sydney loses residents to the regions

For the purposes of the Regional Australia Institute's research, the Gold and Sunshine coasts are still considered regional.

But the two tourist havens, a short drive from Brisbane, are among the biggest cities in the country.

Woman in a dark suit with short hair

The analysis also found Sydney continued to shed the most residents, responsible for 67 per cent of capital city outflows to regional areas across Australia in the year to March.

But the issues that city dwellers often tried to escape from were increasingly prevalent in larger regional cities.

"I know, for those who live on the Gold Coast, congestion and population growth has created some growing pains," Ms Ritchie said.

"People's migration and mobility patterns will always be driven by how their life looks and feels."

Millennials, born between 1981 and 1995, were the most likely demographic to move to regional locations.

"If they're taking that opportunity to move to those locations and find the quality of life — due to congestion and housing supply constraints — isn't what they expected, I think they're going to make that next move [regionally]," Ms Ritchie said.

"That's an important consideration."

The Regional Australia Institute was unable to provide actual figures on how many people had moved because the report was based on Commonwealth Bank customer data.

The organisation said the figures were statistically significant because they were based on relocations amongst its 16 million customers.

'We can't close the gates'

As growing pains are felt in regional cities, politicians have acknowledged there is an issue.

Queensland Premier Steven Miles said growing pains on the Gold Coast were "unprecedented".

"That surge in population, that's not just affecting our hospital service, it's affecting the traffic as well as our housing system. So we need to address all of those things," he said on the Gold Coast this week.

At a local level, Gold Coast planning chair Mark Hammel said existing residents needed to understand that their neighbourhoods would change, and that was key to managing growth.

"I think the main challenges are … community acceptance of it," he said.

He said Gold Coast population growth appeared to be ahead of projections and he expected the city would reach a population of more than a million by the early 2040s.

"If you want your kids and grandkids to be able to live on the Gold Coast in the future, we need to have a really strong conversation about where they're going to live, what those dwellings look like, and how we fit those people in," Cr Hammel said.

This echoed a NSW Productivity Commission report which found that Sydney was at risk of being "the city without grandchildren" .

Cr Hammel said alongside additional infrastructure like libraries, parks and roads, changes throughout the city could include more units, secondary dwellings and subdivisions.

"You know, we can't put the full sign up, we can't close the gates off of the Gold Coast," he said.

Inside Zara and Mike Tindall’s luxe Aussie getaway

I n the sun-drenched haven of Australia's Gold Coast, Zara and Mike Tindall  find their slice of paradise, a place they've openly cherished over the years and where they attend the Magic Millions.

Zara said this year coming to the Magic Millions was like ”coming back home.” ”It really is like a family and it’s been hard not being here for two years,” she added.

This glittering beachside town, renowned for its luxurious allure and celebrity draw, holds a special spot in their hearts, not just for its scenic beauty but for the vibrant life it offers.

The Gold Coast, a place where celebrities like Margot Robbie, who was born closeby, and others such as Julia Roberts, George Clooney, Rebel Wilson, and Jude Law have been seen soaking up the local charm and luxury, offers a peek into its star-studded appeal. But where do these luminaries stay, dine, and unwind?

One of the crown jewels of accommodation here is The Langham Gold Coast. Known for its opulence and exclusive atmosphere, it has hosted a range of celebrities from Rebel Wilson to Harry Styles and Sir Elton John.

It's particularly famous for its Chairman’s Ocean Suite, a sprawling 340 square meter haven of luxury with a double-decker coffee table and a bathroom so lavish, that it includes a spa with underwater disco lights and, unexpectedly, a sofa.

The suite not only offers breathtaking beach views but also pampers with high-end details like quality materials and state-of-the-art stereo systems.

The Chaun spa at The Langham is also a stand-out. Offering the perfect place for stressed out celebrities to unwind and pamper, treatments are guided by the principles of Chinese medicine.

Where to eat

For gastronomic experiences, celebrities often visit Tang, the Chinese restaurant at The Langham, known for its exquisite nine-course degustation menus paired perfectly with fine wines. The ambience and culinary delights make it a must-visit for anyone wanting to taste the high life.

Margot Robbie's personal favourite, Tarte Beach House in Currumbin, offers a relaxed yet refined dining experience.

Drawing inspiration from the Hamptons, it provides a picturesque setting by Currumbin Creek, where dishes like the chicken sandwich with miso mayo and crispy chicken skin are local legends.

For a taste of yacht life without ever leaving shore, La Luna sets the scene with a decor inspired by Mykonos and Saint-Tropez. Here, luxury meets leisure right by the water with king-size daybeds and a poolside menu that boasts everything from oysters to wagyu beef burgers.

Rick Shores, another celebrity haunt, stands out not only for its stunning Burleigh Beach views but also for its incredible Asian fusion menu that captivates with dishes like Rick’s famous Moreton Bay bug rolls and juicy king prawn yellow curry. It's a place where the likes of Jude Law come to savor mouth-watering creations while enjoying the beachfront vibe.

When it comes to entertainment, the Gold Coast’s HOTA, home of the arts, is a cultural hub that draws in the likes of Rebel and Margot with its diverse offerings from concerts to art exhibitions. Here, one can dine in hatted restaurant Palette where Marco Pierre White was a guest chef, enjoying an exquisite fine dining experience that complements the artistic surroundings.

For those seeking a more personalised adventure, Duffy’s offers private boat tours with a skipper to guide guests through the Gold Coast’s waterways, providing stunning views of the coastline and glimpses of luxury homes like Jackie Chan’s villa.

Another unique experience is at Wildflowers, a luxury gin maker’s haven where visitors can immerse themselves in the craft of gin making, from learning its history to distilling their own unique blend under expert guidance.

The Gold Coast, with its blend of natural beauty, upscale leisure, and celebrity-approved spots, continues to be a magnetic destination for those in the know, making it a perfect getaway for not just the Tindalls but anyone looking to experience life at its most glamorous.

AFL great Lance “Buddy” Franklin and wife Jesinta are officially putting plans in place for the next phase of their lives after putting their Gold Coast mansion on the market.

Boasting seven bedrooms and eight bathrooms, the mansion was the most viewed property on when it hit the market and was snapped up by the Franklins six days after it was listed.

Franklin, 37, retired from the AFL late in the 2023 season after suffering a calf injury, departing the game as an all-time great, playing 354 games and kicking 1066 goals for Hawthorn and the Swans.

Wife Jesinta, a model and fashion influencer, spoke recently about the couple and their two young children enjoying the change of pace after leaving Sydney.

The next step appears to be moving to a farm once they have sold Villa Casa.

“We love it. We absolutely love it. We’re actually thinking of selling up and buying a farm now, so yeah, we’ll see how we go,” Jesinta said on Channel 7’s The Morning Show .

“But that could be the next thing we’re talking about the next time I’m here. Potentially (we could sell the dream home). I mean, yes.

“We just love the idea of being on land, growing our own food, having horses, a couple of Highland cows, we’d love that. It could be something interesting.”

Jesinta has published social media posts of the stunning house, including a New Year’s Eve celebration.

While Buddy has been largely out of the public eye, apart from a farewell at the MCG in late April when the Swans faced the Hawks, Jesinta said the family still keeps an eye on the footy.

“We’re getting so much quality time together and we always make sure that we watch the Swannies and the Hawks games,” Jesinta said.

“There’s those two games we carve out the time out for and watch them.

“So we still feel like we’re a little bit a part of it, but it’s nice not to be stressed out by it or have the pressure of winning or losing.”

Jesinta, who was crowned Miss Universe Australia and finishing second runner up in the Miss Universe pageant, married Franklin in 2016.

While Jesinta’s career then somewhat took a back seat as Buddy played out his career as an all-time great, the roles have shifted in recent times.

“Look, we’re still working on picking up our dirty laundry and learning to put them in the basket,” Jesinta said.

“But no, other than that it’s so nice to have him around. It’s so nice to have that extra support at home as well.

“For so long I was the support system to him because footy always came first and there was just not a lot of room in his schedule to move.

“Now it’s really nice to have that reciprocated so I can do a little bit more with my career and he can be at home with the kids.”

Buddy won two premierships and lost one with Hawthorn, playing in three more losing grand finals for the Swans and ending his career as an eight-time All-Australian.

The couple had previously sold a luxury pad in Sydney’s eastern suburbs for $5 million to complete their move to the Gold Coast.

Alastair Clarkson made a couple of big reveals as he publicly addressed his foul language on the bench in Tasmania and the reasons for it.

Collingwood already has one of the longest injury lists in the AFL and a Norm Smith medallist sent a scare through the club on Thursday.

After a serious spike in free kicks after a rules adjustment, the AFL has been praised for clearing things up with clubs.
