During World War II and the Korean War, Burger produced vessels for the army and navy. Burger was the first yacht builder to build an all-welded aluminum yacht, the Virgina, in 1956. Today, each new yacht is reflective of Burger’s heritage and of the personality and cruising requirements of her owner.

The Burger Boat Company was founded in 1863 by Henry B. Burger on the shores of Lake Michigan, and the company has a longstanding boat building heritage. Now internationally recognised as one of the finest custom boat builders in the world, they are known for their variety of vessels, constructed in aluminum and/or steel, which meet the highest of expectations.

History of Burger Yachts

The history of the Burger Boat Company begins with Henry Burger who, having moved with his family from Germany to the USA when he was a child, began as an apprentice shipbuilder at the Wolf & Davidson Shipyard in Milwaukee at the age of 18.

Henry Burger was 24 when he founded the Burger shipyard, intending to produce small 20 – 30 foot Mackinaw boats for local commercial fishermen. In 1870, during the heyday of wooden sailing ships, Henry and Mr. Greene-Rand consolidated their Manitowoc shipyards to form the Greene-Rand, Burger Shipyard – building, among many others, the sailing schooners CITY OF MANITOWOC and J.I. CASE, and this partnership continued until Mr. Rand’s death in 1885.

In 1886, Henry took his nephew, George B. Burger, into partnership forming the Burger and Burger Shipyard. In 1887, envisioning the decline of new wooden sailing ships, they purchased the only dry dock in Manitowoc to begin a ship repair business.

This combination of new construction and ship repair was the formula that made Burger prosperous during the 1890’s when many other shipyards struggled. Between 1870 and the turn of the century, the Burger brand name appeared on almost 100 new vessels including steamers, tugs, scows, schooners and barges.

In 1902, Henry B. & George B. Burger, after almost 40 years in business, sold their shipyard to the Manitowoc Dry Dock Company and Henry Burger retired. Ten years earlier, in 1892, Henry’s nephew, Henry B. Burger Jr., formed a company in his own name, the Henry B. Burger Shipyard, just across the river from his uncle. It is on this site that the current Burger Boat Company has evolved.

While continuing to build small sailing and fishing vessels, Henry ‘Junior’ quickly recognized the potential advantages of the newly developed gasoline engine and the yard’s first motor launch, the 85′ cruiser, VERNON JR., was delivered in 1901. Within ten years, the company was building multiple 80, 90 and 100-foot wooden cruisers and had established a reputation for building the finest custom motor yachts.

Henry junior died in 1914, leaving the company to his wife and four children, who assumed ownership and management of the shipyard and, in 1915, they incorporated as Burger Boat Company.

Throughout the first and second World Wars the Burger Boat Company built many vessels for the US army and navy. With the advent of peace in 1945, Burger devoted its efforts to producing pleasure yachts. Luxury cruisers and auxiliaries were built and a line of custom and semi-custom yachts was introduced in 1949.

The heyday of flush decks, cruisers, houseboats, raised and semi-raised pilothouse motor yachts continued through the sixties, seventies and into the eighties. During this period, Burger worked with notable naval architects such as Sparkman & Stephens, J.B. Hargrave, C. Raymond Hunt, and Donald O’Keeffe.

In October 1986, due to the declining health of Henry E. Burger, the family sold the company to John McMillian, a then current customer building an 86-foot yacht.

Burger continued to prosper and for the period between 1985 and 1990, 47% of all the registered motor yachts over 80 feet built in the U.S. were built by Burger Boat Company.

In April 1989 McMillian sold Burger to United Shipbuilders of America, a newly created subsidiary of Tacoma Boat Building Company. Unfortunately, the unexpected loss of several large naval contracts, along with the newly instituted luxury tax, caused the already-struggling Tacoma Boat Building Company to abruptly suspend operations and in November 1990, the closing of Burger was ordered.

On February 5th 1993, 26 months after the closure, the Burger brand was reborn when Chicago entrepreneurs and businessmen David Ross and Jim Ruffolo purchased the assets of Burger Boat Company and reopened the shipyard.

The first yacht under the new management was the 91-foot Raised Pilothouse Motor Yacht WINDRUSH. This eagerly anticipated yacht was so highly acclaimed at the 1994 Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, that it was directly responsible for Burger Boat Company receiving three additional yacht construction contracts.

Since its reopening, Burger has experienced tremendous growth. Along with this success and expansion, the Burger University was initiated in 2006 to provide new and ongoing training in all trades and departments.

David Ross retired in 2007 and the then co-President, James (Jim) Ruffolo, took over as sole President/CEO.

Burger are dedicated to maintaining their industry leading position and put client satisfaction ahead of all else.

Notable superyacht builds from the Burger shipyard’s modern-day operation include the 142-foot (43.3m) SEA OWL, designed by Andrew Winch and launched in 2009, and the retro-styled 151-foot (46m) SYCARA IV, which was designed by Ken Freivokh.

SEA OWL was a full-custom build and the owner’s requirements were for a master stateroom on the main deck with a private study, a main salon and dining area that were open plan, and multiple exterior deck areas with space to dine, lounge and socialise.

The largest Burger-built superyacht to date is the 153-foot (46.6m) INGOT. INGOT was launched in 2008 and has both an aluminum hull and superstructure. The Burger Boat Company was responsible for her exterior design, and they collaborated with Vripack for the interior. INGOT is a mechanical masterpiece, with each system fully accessible for maintenance and providing her owner with exceptional reliability. INGOT is an ocean-going, long-range superyacht. Fully classified to the requirements of the American Bureau of Shipping and built in compliance with the Maritime Coastal Agency LY2 code, INGOT can be seen in ports around the globe.

German immigrant Henry B. Burger established the company that bears his name in 1863 and the firm quickly achieved success by manufacturing wooden Mackinaw fishing boats for the Wisconsin fishing industry. Within a decade the company had begun building commercial schooners, and by the end of the century were making the largest passenger steamships in the Great Lakes region. Early adopters of technological innovations such as gasoline engines, electric arc welding and steel hulls, Burger quickly flourished as a premier builder of the pleasure yachts that still form the backbone of the company to this day. A by-line in the construction of ships for the U.S. Army and Navy during World War II, and the introduction of America’s first all-welded aluminum hulls in 1956 kept Burger ahead of the market for decades, but tougher times arrived in the 1980s as major customers including the U.S. Navy switched to other suppliers.

Yet Burger Yachts emerged stronger and more resilient as a result of these difficulties when in 1993 the firm was acquired by Chicago entrepreneurs David Ross and Jim Ruffolo. The pair of innovative operators revitalised Burger’s operations, transforming their shipyard into a state-of-the-art complex of more than 70,000 square feet that focuses on the custom pleasure yacht market. The 2006 opening of Burger University, a training school for nautical skills and innovation, was another milestone in the company’s history, and ensured that the firm maintains access to the next generation of yacht builders and designers. The company has since manufactured 34 bespoke luxury yachts of the highest quality for both private and commercial clients and has won awards including the 2006 Yachts International “Trophy for Best Custom Yacht Between 40m and 50m” award for their acclaimed MIRGAB V model.

Today Burger Yachts grows from strength to strength under the shrewd leadership of President Jim Ruffolo, who assumed full control of the company after the retirement of David Ross in 2007. The firm has achieved international acclaim for its range of classic yachts, and have debuted their vessels at yacht shows in Fort Lauderdale, Monaco and elsewhere; delivered yachts to clients on both sides of the Atlantic; and collaborated with design companies such as Vripack in the Netherlands, De Basto Designs of Miami, Florida, and Andrew Winch of the U.K.

Yachts coming from the Burger shipyards, often described as “classic contemporary”, recapture the grace, charm and authenticity of the golden age of yachting, boasting the most stylish and elegant finishes redolent of yachts from the 1920s and 1950s. Traditional accents, restrained luxury and opulent amenities are all to be expected aboard a Burger vessel, which are furnished in the most sophisticated manner. Guests can lounge in staterooms panelled with Honduran mahogany or Italian travertine, gaze out of panoramic windows framed with Macassar ebony and Paduak molding, and sunbathe on spacious deck spaces featuring etched glass balustrades. Interior spaces are softened with teak and maple flooring, while stainless steel fixtures and doors highlighted with polished jewels add a glamorous touch. One of the two 98 footers (30M), named CHICAGO’S LEADING LADY is the first steel vessel they’ve built, since launching BRODIE VI. A special, ‘Chicago’s First Lady Cruises’ build, she shows similar to the traditional Presidential Yacht, Sequoia with it’s mahogany panels and brass details—a 349 passenger, USCG certified type K vessel.

Burger’s new projects on the horizon range from a 214 foot tri-deck to a popular 112 Raised Pi-lothouse Motoryacht. Step aboard and I’ll show you around! Enter aboard into her expansive main salon and dining area, where you’re stewardess can make you a drink. This space is ideal for any entertaining or relaxing that’s on the menu. Continue on, to take a peek at her full beam main deck owner’s stateroom with his and hers en suite baths and lots of closet space. You’ll en-joy the welcoming feel her main entry foyer provides as well. Step into her comfortably chic guest staterooms. Four in total and all with en suite baths. Looking for an optional guest configu-ration, then you would steer towards the alternative that provides you with a VIP and two guest staterooms or even a gym.

The galley is spacious and provides efficiency for any master chef to whip up a meal that would rival the finest restaurant. Come with me now to her spacious pilot house and have a seat on her settee, where you can munch on some snacks at her table and join in on the Captain’s cruising action. Now for some outside fun, follow me from the pilot house to her generously sized, open sundeck where you’ll have your choice to either sunbathe, catch up on your favorite novel in the shade or take in the ever changing views accompanied by your favorite hors d’oeuvres. Step down forward into the crew area to visualize where your six crew members will feel well taken care of in their lounge and galley area. For those with lots of goodies to bring on each trip, you’ll appreciate the generous storage Burger thought of in advance including a hidden store room you can access at the aft end of the sundeck.

YACHTS A LUCK (ex. Corinne) - was proudly launched on November 21st, 1987....  Built in Wisconsin by Burger Boat Company She is a fine example of a highly customized 80 foot aluminum raised pilothouse cruiser. The interior of YACHTS A LUCK is matched teak with a custom stain finish. The interior design and decorating was accomplished by her original building family.  The main lounge is highlighted by an all teak bar on the port side and entertainments center on the starboard side, each being L-shaped with matching L-shaped teak overhead. Special lighting gives this room a very enjoyable, relaxed atmosphere for entertaining.  The aft stairwell has a handcrafted satin finished stainless steel balustrade with teak handrail, inlaid with stainless steel banding.  A powder room is located in the forward port corner of the lounge with interior finish of bronze plexi-view mirror with teak trim.  There is a formal dining room, also finished in teak. A built-in buffet located forward with mirrored doors houses individual lined compartments for china, silverware and glassware.  To the starboard side of the dining room is a custom built fold-out teak serving table.  The pilothouse is finished in custom stained teak. Flooring in this area is natural teak with maple splining. The observation seat is leather covered.  There is also a removable rest at the wheel stand.  Electronics and Navigation Equipment are abundant and sure to impress any yachtsman. The flying bridge features wraparound seating and two helmsman chairs.  There is a small bar with sink, refrigerator / ice maker, single unit grille, bottle and glass storage.  Navigation equipment includes full engine instrumentation and controls and repeat pilot house electronics enabling operation of the yacht from the bridge.  She is powered by a pair of Detroit Diesel Allison 12V92TA Diesel engines. Electrical power is supplied by (2) 35kw Northern Lights generators. Other equipment includes Naiad stabilizers, Aqua Air Conditioning, halon fire protection system, village marine desalinator, Microphor head system, TIE phone system, Kahlenberg air horns, Ideal windlasses, Nautical Structures yacht crane.  There is an Astro Pure water purifier on board, hot water heaters and washer and dryers located in the aft quarters... The galley is very tastefully done in light color laminate. All countertops are Corian. Galley equipment includes a Hi/Lo microwave cooking center, dishwasher, food center, side by side refrigerator / freezer, instant hot water dispenser. The Master Stateroom with (2) full baths and (2) guest staterooms each with private bath are located aft. The staterooms are in custom high gloss finishes and custom furnishings.  All aft baths have mirrored walls and overheads. The crew quarters - finished with custom wall fabric and teak trim are located forward and will accommodate a crew of three. There is a full bath with enclosed shower; also a combination galley / dinette area.  YACHTS A LUCK is truly a very distinguished BURGER YACHT with a rich history that any true Yachtsman will appreciate.  Currently berthed inside a heated storage building -  located in Holland, Michigan she can be seen by appointment.

About Burger Yachts

In the midst of the American Civil War, Henry Burger made the decision to move from Milwaukee, Wisconsin to Manitowoc, Wisconsin on the shore of Lake Michigan. There he founded the H. Burger Shipyard, making small fishing vessels for local fishermen. As his reputation grew, so did his business, and he became a well-respected boat builder throughout the Great Lakes region.

The late 1880s brought a decline in purchases of wooden sailing vessels. During this time Henry Burger brought on his nephew, George Burger, and they purchased the sole dry dock located in Manitowoc, Wisconsin to open a ship repair business.

In 1902, Henry and George Burger sold their business to the Manitowoc Dry Dock Company. That company eventually evolved into the world’s foremost crane manufacturer. However, this would not be the end of the Burger name in boating. In 1892, Henry Burger Jr. had opened his own shipyard and this would continue the Burger tradition, becoming the Burger Boat Company still operating today.

Burger built boats for both the WWI and WWII war efforts. After each war, it continued to build custom yachts. Throughout the 1950s and 1960s Burger built an expertise in crafting aluminum yachts. Lighter and faster than comparable wood or steel yachts, Burger yachts began winning races, further increasing their reputation. In 1989, Burger was sold to United Shipbuilders of America, a subsidiary of the Tacoma Boat Building Company. By the end of 1990, the Tacoma Boat Building Company was in financial trouble and was forced to close its doors.

Luckily, two businessmen David Ross and Jim Ruffolo were able to purchase the assets of Burger Boat Company, subsequently reopening the shipyard. Thus the long history of the Burger Boat Company continues to this day.
