Which Catamaran Cruise Should I Choose?

Whichever catamaran cruise you choose, you’ll have the time of your life! Their differences have to do mainly with whether you choose a Semi-Private (Shared) or a Private Cruise, the food and drinks offered on board the boats, the passenger capacity, the vessel’s size, and the point of departure.

  • - Semi-Private (Shared) or Private Cruise : If your plan is to spend some enjoyable moments as part of a group and share their energy, then a Semi-Private Catamaran Cruise would be the perfect match! For those wishing to add some privacy to their cruise, or who want to organize a special celebration on board, the best choice would be a Private Cruise for only them and their loved ones!
  • - Food : Buffet or BBQ meal, some of them include filet of fish, while others chicken filet or pork.
  • - Drinks : On all of the cruises you will be offered unlimited local wine and soft drinks, while some of them include beers, and others, cocktails.
  • - Passenger capacity : Fewer passengers means more comfort, but more passengers means more fun and a chance to meet new people - the choice is yours!
  • - Luxury catamarans are larger and more deluxe and thus offer more comfort.
  • - Departure port : If you stay in Oia or Imerovigli, it will be preferable to book a catamaran cruise that departs from Ammoudi port, as the travel distance with the operator’s pick-up vehicle is shorter. For people staying in the southern part of the island, the most convenient option would be a cruise departing from Vlychada port since it is the nearest port to that location.

There you are, out on the water when a strange craft approaches.  Is it a sailboat? It sure looks like one until it turns to face you.  That’s when you notice this boat doesn’t have just one hull. It has two hulls and it’s called a catamaran.

Catamarans are unique, and highly stable watercraft.  We’ll explore all the ins and outs of sailing the waters in one of these weird, and awesome multi-hulled craft.  Join me as we explore the wild world of sailing catamarans.

A small sailing catamaran sits on a beach.

A History Of The Catamaran

It is believed that the first people to use a catamaran design were those living in Australasia.

A map showing the region where the catamaran originated.

The succession of boat design in this region was actually very interesting.  The beginning of boats in the area was simple, albeit conventional rafts. These were fashioned from logs strewn together with plant fiber lashings such as those formed using bamboo fiber.

Catamaran Evolution

An info graphic showing the progression of the evolution of the catamaran.

The conventional raft gave way to a minimal raft.  This design was basically a conventional raft with two cross beams added in the form of logs.  These would be eventually hollowed out to improve buoyancy.

The next step in the evolution of boats in the Australasian region was the double canoe.  This proved to be the first real catamarans.

After some time, the form evolved further into the asymmetrical double canoe design.  In this design, one canoe was large and the other attached canoe was smaller.

The asymmetrical design quickly evolved into the single-outrigger boat like the one shown in the photo below.

A monohull canoe with an attached exterior outrigger is shown in this file photo.

The final stage of the evolution of the catamaran in the region was to gain a second outrigger.  This in effect created the trimaran with the single central hull and dual outriggers.

Eye Witness Accounts Of Catamarans

In 1697, William Dampier wrote of witnessing a type of seafaring vessel off the coast of Coromandel.  He noted how the locals called the type of boat a catamaran. He also noted that it had multiple hulls (logs) and that they were small vessels that the person operating would have to hang partway into the water, straddling the hull (log).

The name catamaran came from the Tamil.  And yet, it was easily applied by the European visitors to the two hulled sailing vessels that sped across the water in the region.

Although Dampier may have described the catamaran in the 1690s, the type of boat was actually used as early as the 5th century by the Tamil Chola dynasty.  They used boats to move their troops from one island to another. Using this design of boat allowed them to travel heavy, travel quickly and was partially responsible for the conquering of neighboring Burma, Malaysia, and Indonesia.

Building A Boat – Basics Of Catamaran Construction

A boat is usually thought of as being a single-hulled vessel that travels along the surface of the water.  It can have multiple types, shapes, and designs of the hull. However, it is often only thought of as having a single hull.  But, what if it had two hulls? Would that be like taking two separate boats, and making a raft over both of them? In essence, that is exactly what a catamaran is:  two boats made into one.

Advantages Of Multiple Hulls

  • More stability than a monohull
  • Wide supporting base allows for larger sails than monohull craft of the same length
  • Hull does not require the deep-running keel of a standard monohull sailboat
  • Less hull drag in the water than a monohull
  • Less power required to drive a catamaran forward than a monohull boat

Disadvantages Of Multiple Hulls

  • Due to multiple hulls, construction is more expensive than a monohull design
  • Catamaran speed relies on lightweight materials to make a lightweight craft.  This also drives up the cost of construction.
  • Extra engineering requirements for multi-hull craft also increase the cost of construction.

Conclusion?  Well, it looks to me like everything about catamarans points towards superiority over monohulls in nearly every way.  But, you get what you pay for. I think the same thing likely applies to cars too. For instance, I have a performance car that cost me about 10k more than the equivalent non-sports car within the same class.

Yet to drive the vehicle, it performs so much better than the normal version of the car, it really speaks volumes to the difference between a common vehicle, and a performance one.

Speaking of performance vehicles, let’s take a look now at the different kinds and uses of a catamaran.

Catamaran Types

Commercial catamarans – ferries.

Catamarans are often used as a ferry to transport people and vehicles across bodies of water as shown in this photo.

One of the most common uses for a catamaran is the commercial use of the vehicle design when it comes to ferries.  This is likely due to the wide, flat deck possibilities of a catamaran versus a monohulled boat. Not only that, but the catamaran is also a much more stable bodied vessel.  This again makes it a superior design for transporting larger land vessels like trucks and so forth. They can easily drive on the ferry without fear of the ferry tipping over.

Some ferries are designed for taking vehicles, like the one you might find in the city of Toronto.  Where it transports cars from the mainland to Toronto Island. Others are designed specifically with the sole purpose of transporting people. I took a look at one such ferry that operates in Germany.  Take a look at the following case study.

Commercial Use Case Study – The Ferry

The FRS Helgoline is a ferry catamaran operating out of Flensburg, Germany, close to the Danish border.

Top-rated boat seats on Amazon

According to the ferry company’s website, the ferry runs using four main engines which are run to a capacity of 12,182 hp combined.  This blasts this ferry at a speed of 35 knots or 65 km/hour. This is equivalent to 40 miles per hour. That’s pretty good considering the size and weight of the ship body this catamaran can carry.

Speaking of capacity, the ship can carry 680 passengers. At 56.4 meters long (185 feet) by 14 meters wide (45.9 feet), that’s a decent passenger capacity.

Catamaran Passenger Capacity Versus Monohull Boat Passenger Capacity

The general rule for calculating passenger capacity for a boat is as follows.

Length x Width / 15 = Passenger Capacity

Therefore, the FRS Helgoline should have a calculated capacity calculated as follows.

185 x 45.9 / 15 = 566

But it actually has a capacity of 680 which is a 20% increase in capacity over a standard monohull.

For comparison, let’s look at a superyacht.  A 48.5m (159 feet) long by 10.7m (35 feet) beam (width of the boat) Palmer Johnson Supersport 48 (valued at about $28.5 million dollars) should have a capacity calculated as follows.

159 x 35 / 15 = 371

In short, 26 feet of difference in length equates to 309 fewer passengers.  It is almost half of the capacity of the catamaran at 26 feet longer length.

A super yacht sits like a golden blade floating in the water.

Commercial Catamarans – Service Vehicles

In port in Australia, a service catamaran sits docked in this photo.

Although Catamarans are typically used as ferries due to their stability and ability to carry wide loads on their flat decks, there are many different service catamarans out there as well.  From a support vessel to a crew transfer or search and rescue, catamarans are a solid and stable platform to build a ship on.

This is the Ardea which is a 20 meter (65.6 feet) catamaran to be used for crew transport and as a support ship.  This ship was built by the Echo Marine Group and delivered to Western Australia in early 2019. This particular vessel is in the service of the Cape Preston Sino Iron Project.

Catamarans are used all around the world, for a variety of tasks, not just ferries or support craft.

Commercial Catamarans – Cruise Lines

A large red and white catamaran cruise ship sits idle in the waters in front of a bustling metropolis in this photo.

Now these are the catamarans we all want to be aboard, aren’t they?  Due to the wide stance, these ships can feature massive halls and wide-open interior areas.  These ships are stable, and some would say even more stable and safer than monohull design ships.

There are many cruise ship catamarans in use today around the world.  Some of the more ‘famous’ catamaran cruises are those which investigate the Galapagos Islands.  There are several high-end, small fleet, cruise lines operating to the Galapagos which utilize catamaran design vessels as their primary ship type.

These ships can be extremely comfortable and stable and often offer some reprieve to those who may otherwise feel seasick. It won’t stop the feeling, but the more stable the hull, the less the boat rocks around.

Military Catamarans

The USNS Spearhead races forward along the water in this file photo.

Catamarans make excellent military transport vessels.  They are stable and the potential to have a large, flat and wide deck for transporting land craft, troops or acting as a landing pad for vertical take-off aerial craft.  The stability of the two hulls makes the vessel an excellent candidate for military use, and thus it is used for said purpose.

A photo of the rear of the USNS Spearhead - a military catamaran.

As you can clearly see in the image of the USNS Spearhead, the rear of the vessel has a moveable ramp that can be used for loading and unloading land vehicles.  The interior bay of the craft is visible in the image as well, a large area for storage of vehicles, supplies and more. The crane arm on the back of the ship also shows how it is a versatile craft, set up to act as an excellent support craft with a helicopter landing pad and ample storage and freight capacity.

Recreational Catamarans

Siting on a beach, a small catamaran sail is set against the wind swept clouds and blue sky.

Catamaran Personal WatercraftThe wind is in your hair, the warm spray from the hull cutting over the edge of each wave as you skip over the water.  That is life, let me tell you. Personal watercraft have come a long way over the years and the small one, two, three and four-person catamarans have come a long way as well.

This image shows a homemade catamaran.

Depending on the options, you can get a small one or two-person catamaran for as little as $1500 new.  That might be an inflatable though. There are some very nice, rigid hull designed catamarans for 1-4 people that range from $3500 to $15000.  And these are basically open, personal watercraft like that shown in the image below.

Using a small catamaran can be quite challenging to learn at first.  Sailing is not for the faint of heart. It requires skill, technique, knowledge of the wind and sea, and a bit of hard work.  But it can be fun, rewarding and a great way to catch some sun and fresh air out on the water. It’s a relatively GREEN sport as well.   Given the use of sails over gas-powered motors that is.

‘Sailing Cats’ – Sailing Catamarans – Yacht & Luxury Class

This photo shows a luxury sailing catamaran yacht.

Here’s where we get into the dreamy boats of the rich and famous.  I priced out a small 43’ luxury Leopard 40 sailing catamaran. Even before I added any extras at all, the base price was $399,000 USD.  I imagine if I added a few of the multiple extras available, and some tax, freight and that sort of thing, I’m easily in half a million dollars.  And that’s the smallest base model.

Top-rated boat covers on Amazon

There are all kinds of luxury catamaran shipbuilders across the world.  From Asia to Europe and The Americas, it seems any major boating country has at least one company building luxury catamarans.  It’s weird that you don’t see more of them on the water though, don’t you think?

Being sailing vessels, these luxury cats require some training in sailing before you get behind the wheel.  And considering the price point, I would definitely want to be at least a semi-decent sailor with some good few years experience under my belt before I would comfortable at the helm of a half-million-dollar sailing cat.  It’s all relative I suppose. I imagine a billionaire might bat an eye at the prospect of wrecking a half-million-dollar boat. But to me, and most of you reading this, that’s likely a lot of money.

‘Power Cats’ – Powered Catamarans

A powered catamaran is shown in this file photo.

The powered catamaran is one of my favorite boats.  They have sort of a muscle car appearance with the wide and often tall front end of the boats.  I find it to be reminiscent of a large air intake on the front hood of a rally race car like the Subaru WRX, for instance.  These boats are fast, they are stable and handle very well. Catamarans are often considered the boat of choice for long sea voyages due to their stability.

A powered catamaran will definitely cost more than a powered monohull boat of the same length.  Why? Well, the powered catamaran has one crucial downside. That is, it needs two engines. One for each of the two hulls.  Otherwise, it’s off balance for propulsion. These two engines or motors have to be in sync with each other or again, the propulsion will be off-balance.  Because they have two motors, they have double the maintenance when it comes to maintaining the propulsion system.

More components also means a greater chance of things breaking down.  In essence, it doubles the chances of the ship having a motor break down. The saving grace is that should one motor break, they have a backup, even if it does mean very unbalanced propulsion.  In contrast, a monohull vessel of the same length may only have half the chance of motor failure due to only having one motor, but if that one motor breaks, then what? Call for help, that’s what.  A cat would have a struggling chance to get itself back to port. A monohull would be dead in the water unless it was carrying spare parts or another motor onboard somewhere.

Catamaran Frequently Asked Questions

What is a catamaran cruise.

catamarano get your guide

A catamaran cruise is simply a cruise on a dual hull design boat.  Often used for river cruises, the catamaran which is used as cruise ships are often considerably smaller than their giant monohulled counterparts.

What is the purpose of a catamaran?

A catamaran is a design for a boat that utilizes two hulls.  Due to the flat, platform-like-potential for the deck of the boat, the catamaran is often purposed with transporting materials, vehicles, and people.  For instance, catamarans are quite often used as ferries.

Is catamaran safe?

Catamaran are very safe water craft.   The design of riding on two hulls separated by a gap in between, in essence is like giving a car a double-wide wheel base.  The wider the stance, the more stable the craft, from side to side anyway. And if the length of the boat is proportional to the width, then it becomes an extremely stable craft.  That is why catamarans are often considered the best to be used for long voyages. Yes, catamaran are safe.

What is the difference between a catamaran and a sailboat?

A traditional sailboat is a deep, monohull vessel that has at least one mast extending high into the air above the deck to hold sails.  A catamaran refers to the design of a dual-hull boat and really has nothing to do with sails. Although, catamaran do make excellent sailing boats as well, they are quite capable of acting as power boats and do not require sails if they have the correct amount of powered motors to propel them.  Sailboats, although also able to be powered if a motor is provided, are traditionally monohull and wind-powered exclusively.

Do catamarans have small interiors?

The size of an interior cabin on a boat is typically proportional to the size of the boat itself.  If a catamaran has above-deck cabins, they will likely be able to be of a larger design than those you would find on deck of a monohull boat.  This is because a catamaran has a much wider footprint than a monohull boat of the same length. This extra width would allow for larger on deck cabins.

How much does a catamaran cost?

A personal watercraft (1-2 person) inflatable catamaran will run you anywhere from $1500-$12000 USD, depending on the quality and features.  The rigid hull catamarans of the same size start at about $4500 USD.

Top-rated boat lights on Amazon

A small cabin cruiser type of catamaran will typically start at about $60000 for a small base model and the price just goes up and up depending on size and features.

For Instance, a 40’, 3 cabin with 1 washroom cat will cost you about $500,000 USD for the base model.  They are considerably more expensive that a monohull of the same length. However, the trade-off is greater stability and a smoother, more comfortable ride.

Is a catamaran more work to maintain?

Technically yes.  Due to having two hulls and if powered, two motors and likely also water jets, this means you have double the oil changes of a boat that would have a single motor.  Once you get past the basic engine and hull maintenance, a catamaran is not that much more work than a monohull ship of the same length.

The trouble with catamarans in terms of maintenance, is that once they reach a certain length, the width becomes more than a standard lane on the road.  That being said, if you ever need to transport the boat via land, it can be quite the challenge. Especially if you need to pay to have a police escort for an extra-wide trailer.  And special licensing might be involved as well.

What is the difference between a catamaran and a trimaran?

A trimaran is shown in this photo.

A catamaran is a dual hull boat.  In other words, it has two hulls. A trimaran has three hulls.

Is a catamaran considered a yacht?

According to Oxford dictionary, a yacht is a medium-sized sailboat equipped for cruising or racing.  A catamaran, on the other hand, is a boat with two hulls. Therefore, a catamaran can most certainly also be a yacht.  And likewise, if a yacht has two hulls, then it is a catamaran as well.

Can you get seasick on a catamaran?

Seasickness occurs when a person feels nauseous from the swaying motion of a rocking ship.  These feelings may be lessened on a catamaran, due to their extra stability. However, a catamaran may be slightly more stable than a monohull of the same length, but it is still a boat.  And it will still make someone who experiences seasickness continue to feel the ill effects.

Are catamarans more stable in rough seas?

Catamarans are known to be more stable than monohull ships of the same length.  This is why catamarans are often the ship type of choice for long sea voyages due to their stability.

Why do catamarans capsize?

Catamarans are not known for capsizing.  The larger vessels that is anyway. But, it does happen from time to time.  Catamarans are known for their stability, so typically if a capsize event should occur, it is typical for them to be extreme circumstances.

Top-rated canoe accessories on Amazon

Personal watercraft catamarans are a different story though.  These are in fact known for tipping over. Not because they are less stable than their monohull counterparts of the same length.  But instead, because they are able to go considerably faster than monohull personal watercraft of the same length (not including powered craft though).  This is due to the sailing cats being able to have a larger sail than a small monohull sailboat of the same length.

Due to the extra sail, they are able to travel faster than monohull sailboats of the same length.  This allows them to whip around on the water and at higher speeds, whipping your cat about quick can easily send it over sideways. Extra speed means fast turns carry momentum in the direction of travel and that extra speed equates to tipping over if turned too fast.  To sum up, they capsize due to user error or extreme events.

Which is safer, a catamaran or a monohull?

Due to the extra stability of having a wider footprint than a monohull, a catamaran of the same length is the safer vessel.

Are catamarans safer than sailboats?

The same rule applies to stability versus the length of the hull.  A cat will always be the more stable length for length. However, due to their ability to go much faster than a monohull sailboat, this kind of cancels out some of the added safety due to stability.  With that in mind, they may just be about the same but there is one generalization we can make when comparing the safety of catamarans vs sailboats: At the same speed, and of equal length, sailing or power catamaran will be safer than a monohull sailboat.

How fast can catamarans go?

The speed a catamaran can go is entirely dependent upon the hull design, weight of the vessel, the strength of propulsion (be it wind or powered) and so on.  The general rule is that in terms of sailing cats vs monohull sailboats, a cat of equal length can typically go faster than a sailboat.

In terms of powered cats vs powerboats, a powered catamaran will typically require less energy to move forward than a monohull of the same sort of hull design (but monohull of course) and thus a cat should, in theory, be able to go faster than a monohull when both are using propulsion that is equal in power.

GetYourGuide Review [2024]: When to Use & When to Avoid It

* This article contains affiliate links, which help run this site at no extra cost to you.

TL:DR: After using GetYourGuide, we recommend it if you’re looking for reliable walking tours, guided hikes, and cultural experiences. Here are a few key takeaways from our GetYourGuide review:

  • It’s a legitimate and reliable site for easily booking tours worldwide from your computer or the mobile app.
  • There is a huge variety of tours available in popular destinations, especially Europe. It can help you do everything from making macaroons in Paris, to snorkeling with sea turtles in the Pacific Ocean, or touring Alcatraz in San Francisco.
  • Pricing is competitive but extra fees can sometimes apply—as with anything, read the entire tour description.
  • Customer service provides flexibility with the 24 hour cancellation policy and assistance as needed.

Tours can make or break your vacation. I know it does for me. That’s why it’s essential to know if the guided tour you’re going on is good.

GetYourGuide is one of my go-to tour booking sites because of its easy booking process and reliability.

GetYourGuide works with local guides to give you the best experience possible without taking advantage of the community you’re visiting.

I’ve often used GetYourGuide in places like Europe and the United States. I did my travel planning quickly because of the many tours and activities available.

Read my GetYourGuide review and add another tool to your toolbox when planning the vacation of a lifetime.

A pair of hands typing on a keyboard in front of a computer monitor displaying the GetYourGuide website homepage.

Table of Contents

What is GetYourGuide?

A screenshot of the GetYourGuide website 'about' page, which displays. a photo of a woman kayaking.

GetYourGuide is an online tour operator that organizes activities with local travel companies.

You can purchase everything from skip-the-line tickets to a private tour to guided hikes.

GetYourGuide began when a handful of classmates started the website in 2009. They were determined to change the travel game forever.

The idea originated from a trip that Johannes and Tao–two of the founders–took to Beijing.

Johannes arrived a day early, and Tao wasn’t there to show him around.

The two friends recognized a universal issue: Travelers arrive at new dream destinations but don’t know where to begin.

I like GetYourGuide because their website makes it easier for me to start planning a trip.

By searching through their database, I can find everything from unique tours to the top tours and activities worldwide.

How Does GetYourGuide Work?

A screenshot of the 'Cultural Experiences' page on the GetYourGuide website.

Search Desired Location

Most travelers use Get Your Guide to search for guides at their predetermined destination.

In this case, it’s easy to type in the desired location at the top of the Get Your Guide web page.

Several tours pop up after searching for the destination.

Tours with the highest reviews rank highest. From here, I use the filter options that Get Your Guide offers.

If I can’t find a tour from the main search, I select filters like:

  • For first-time visitors
  • Landmarks & monuments
  • Entry tickets
  • Family-friendly activities
  • Culture & History
  • Guided tours
  • Viewing points

I often find opportunities I hadn’t thought of, like sandboarding or kayaking through caves.

Choose Your Ideal Tour

Choosing the ideal tour can be difficult, especially with so many options. Keep in mind that the Best-Seller certificate indicates the highest quality tours.

Read the tour description thoroughly, as that’ll give you a clear understanding of what the tour offers.

After finding the perfect tour, fill out the information like name, email, and credit card details.

I could pay for my tour with PayPal, Google Pay, Apple Pay, or a credit card. And there aren’t any hidden fees or booking fees when you book tickets on GetYourGuide.

Once the payment is complete, you’ll receive a confirmation email with all the details for your tour.

That’s it! Booking your own guided tour is that easy.

Pro tip: Visit the promo code webpage and enter your email to receive a one-time GetYourGuide promo code. The code gives 10% off on some tours.

Meet Your Tour Guide at the Specified Location

After purchasing my tour, I received an email stating the meeting point to join the tour company.

Sometimes, the tour operators ask for the local address of your hotel, Airbnb, or hostel.

When I visited Rainbow Mountain in Peru, we sent them our local address and photos of our passports.

Some tour guides offer to pick you up, and others specify a meeting place (or multiple meeting points).

Booking tours through GetYourGuide is simple, but sometimes, the local agency is unclear about the meeting point.

I suggest contacting the tour provider if you’re unsure about the meeting point.

GetYourGuide Review: My Experience With Using GetYourGuide

A hand holds an iPhone, looking at the GetYourGuide app, with a soft-focus living room in the background.

Public and Private Tours

Most activities through GetYourGuide are public, but there are some private tours.

I prefer booking a private tour when I know I want to be in a small group.

For me, activities in nature–like guided hikes–are more peaceful in smaller groups.

I use the filters to narrow my search to private tours by clicking See More Categories, then Private Tours.

Using the filters on the Get Your Guide website cuts my results in half, sometimes more. From there, it’s easier to find tickets.

Day Trips and Multi-day Trips

Most of the tours I find through Get Your Guide are day trips. Still, there are tons of shorter or longer experiences.

While researching Peru, I used the Duration filter to see 12 pages of cooking classes, sunset excursions, and viewpoint tickets.

The shorter guided experiences help enrich long days. While planning a day trip, I’ll check out the city tours and popular activities.

Get Your Guide also offers multi-day trips, like the Salkantay Trek in Peru. I wanted to do this hike, but it was a significant investment.

While I’m sure that booking multi-day trips through Get Your Guide is fine, my travel companions and I still felt more comfortable booking extensive tours with local companies in town.

Plus, I’ve learned that I can usually save money by booking locally because of the currency exchange.

Self-Guided Tours

GetYourGuide also offers self-guided tours that you can download onto your phone and listen to at any time.

These tours come in audio and visual form. I haven’t purchased any of the self-guided tours yet, but I’ve noticed a few things.

On the GetYourGuide website, I suggest searching for “audio tour [location name]” instead of “self-guided tour.” They’re listed as “Other Experience,” which meant I had to click on the tours to check that they were in fact, audio or visual tours.

I actually found it just as productive to Google phrases like “GetYourGuide audio tour Italy.”

It’s also inconvenient to download the tours since they aren’t all housed on the official GetYourGuide app. The tours are created by different agencies that have their own apps.

You’ll download the app ahead of time and then receive a link to access the tour. Most tours can be refunded as long as they’re “returned” ahead of time and not activated.

Despite being clunky, I did find a lot of unique tours. My favorites were the Paris History of Crime Tour and a complete package of US National Park tours .

Transportation through GetYourGuide

Not all travel booking sites offer transportation services. Get Your Guide works with local drivers to pick you up from your accommodation and take you to the airport.

Airport shuttles are available with a one-way or round-trip ticket.

I first started looking into transportation services through the GetYourGuide website because I’m planning a trip to Mendoza, Argentina.

Booking a ride this way is surprisingly convenient and cheap, even for budget travelers.

Tickets to Attractions through GetYourGuide

Get Your Guide is the perfect platform to use for European sightseeing.

For example, Florence is one of the most popular places in the world to travel to and one of my favorite cities.

Florence is chock-full of sightseeing, and it’s easy to book tours through Get Your Guide.

Just like filtering for specific durations, I filter based on my interests.

The homepage of Get Your Guide has four main categories: Sports, Culture, Food, and Nature.

You can manually select more specific activities by typing them into the search bar or choosing the “Filters” button once you decide on a travel destination.

I love these features because booking an architecture-focused day trip to Pisa one day and a walking tour of Siena the next was easy.

The advantage of touring with a local provider is that they know the ins and outs of their city.

GetYourGuide App

I love booking tickets directly on the app when on a long bus ride or in the car.

When I find tours and activities, I can save them to my wishlist.

Then, I’ll book tours on the guide app or my computer once I return to my Airbnb .

I stay logged into my GetYourGuide account on the website and the app. This way, my wishlist is available on my phone and computer.

Finding the same tour and tour operators on either device is a matter of clicks.

Plus, anytime I have a travel-related conversation, it’s easy to open my phone and bring up some of my top bucket list activities.

DOWNLOAD THE GETYOURGUIDE APP HERE:

Skip the Line Tickets

Sometimes, I’m not feeling a tour, but there’s still a sight I need to see. Skip-the-line tickets are the perfect way to see a popular attraction without waiting long.

The line to see Michelangelo’s David is horrible, but buying my entrance ticket beforehand means more time to explore the city. . . and more time to enjoy wine in the evening.

Unfortunately, sometimes there’s a booking fee for these sorts of tickets.

But sometimes it’s worth the extra booking fees to receive the ticket before others.

Price Guarantee

GetYourGuide offers a price guarantee , which ensures you won’t pay more on their official site than you would through other tour companies.

One time, I booked a tour in Italy and found the same activity for cheaper elsewhere. I contacted Get Your Guide, and they paid the difference!

Before you do this, make sure each tour includes the same things. It pays to compare prices!

A view of the shoulder of a man whose hands are typing on a keyboard in front of a computer monitor displaying the GetYourGuide website homepage with experiences for San Francisco.

Easy to Use

More than anything else, I love the easy interface of GetYourGuid’s website and app. They take what can be a confusing process and make it simple.

GetYourGuide makes finding activities that everyone will enjoy simple, and I can buy tickets within seconds.

Other travel booking sites don’t always make this process easy. I respect GetYourGuide for prioritizing that.

Great Cancellation Policy

I may be jumping ahead here, but it must be said. GetYourGuide has a worry-free cancellation policy .

I’ll go into more detail later, but the most crucial feature is free cancellation within 24 hours of the tours and activities.

Large Selection of Tours in Popular Destinations

If GetYourGuide didn’t have a large selection of tours, we might not have had this conversation.

But there are many different tours in places like North America, Europe, and Australia.

It’s also nice knowing that local companies are getting paid, too, and it’s not bad for the local economy.

Other travelers will agree that it’s fun daydreaming about travel by looking up tours with a local company.

A computer monitor sits on a white desk, displaying the GetYourGuide website homepage with experiences for San Francisco.

Very Few Tours in Some Parts of the World

It’s a bummer that GetYourGuide doesn’t have as many tours in South America and Central America.

I love the rugged travel style of these places, but sometimes I want to do a couple of tours before setting out on the less-trodden path.

GetYourGuide offers tours to trendy places like Machu Picchu. It skips some of the less flashy destinations, like tours around a town or small hikes.

One of my favorite Central American countries, Guatemala, has very few tours to choose from. I was there for two months and never opened the app.

Not Many Nature Tours

Now, this is changing for the better, but I want more adventure activities to choose between.

Sometimes, when I go to a new city, I want to see what the suburbs are like and what adventures await outside the city limits.

Simple tours of little-known locations aren’t as popular because many tourists visit to see the big attractions.

GetYourGuide Cancellation & Exchange Policy

A view of the shoulder of a man whose hands are typing on a keyboard in front of a computer monitor displaying the GetYourGuide website homepage.

Things come up that we have no control over. That’s why booking tours with a good cancellation policy is essential.

GetYourGuide offers free cancellation for their own tours and activities within 24 hours.

An issue arose while traveling through Europe, so I canceled one of our GetYourGuide tours. I received a full refund, no questions asked!

Be sure to read the fine print of every tour that you book. There could be different rules for each activity.

The cancelation process itself is easy. You go to the Help Center and follow the instructions for Cancellation. The form asks for your booking reference and pin.

There’s less risk when you buy tours that you can cancel so easily.

FAQs About GetYourGuide

A hand points to a spot on a globe sitting on a white desk in front of a computer monitor displaying the GetYourGuide website homepage

Is GetYourGuide legit?

GetYourGuide is legit and a great way to find some of the best activities worldwide!

Countries that don’t have many GetYourGuide options might seem less legit because of the lack of GetYourGuide reviews. I suggest finding activities with many good reviews.

Who is GetYourGuide owned by?

Four former classmates in Switzerland started and own GetYourGuide. Those four are Tao Tao, Martin Sieber, Johannes Reck & Tobias Rein.

Their goal was to create a platform where everyone could find the best activities worldwide, all in one place. Safe to say they achieved this.

Is GetYourGuide the same as Viator?

GetYourGuide is the same concept as Viator , but two different groups of people own them. TripAdvisor , the popular online travel forum company, owns Viator.

Which is better, Viator or GetYourGuide?

Viator and GetYourGuide are fantastic sites that help thousands of travelers find things to do in a specific destination. With that said, both of these are better for different areas.

Viator is better in the United States, while GetYourGuide has many activities in Canada/Europe.

What does “Certified by GetYourGuide” mean?

Choosing an activity with the golden “Certified by GetYourGuide” on the page means it’s a proven quality activity. When I book a tour with this, I have no worries.

If I have to choose between a tour with or without the golden certificate, I always choose the one with it.

The last thing I want to worry about on vacation is whether or not I booked a good tour.

Which countries should I use GetYourGuide in?

GetYourGuide is a good service for booking your tour in the most popular destinations worldwide.

I’ve had good luck with GetYourGuide in Europe, Canada, Dubai, Australia, and even many countries in Southeast Asia!

There are some spots you should keep your expectations low for.

Latin America is a part of the world that doesn’t have many activities available. Even so, I found quality activities with local guides in places like Cusco and Medellin.

Conclusion: So, is GetYourGuide worth it?

A hand holds an iPhone, looking at the GetYourGuide app, with a soft-focus living room in the background.

I always use GetYourGuide when researching things to do in a new location. This site is valuable and worth your time.

I think it’s the most reliable 3rd party tour site today. I love how they work with locals and aren’t trying to detract from the country’s economy.

If you’re going to Europe this summer, check out the GetYourGuide hotel pickup and all the necessary information for the best day.

I wish Latin American countries had more GetYourGuide opportunities, but I know that time is coming.

My experience with their guides, website, and customer service has been top-notch. Of course, though, just like every other company, you can find GetYourGuide complaints.

Planning the perfect trip is hard. GetYourGuide has opportunities for all of my fellow travelers. From multi-day activities to workshops/classes, GetYourGuide has it all.

Whenever I start my research for my next vacation, I go to GetYourGuide–and I think you should, too!

Get Your Guide Review: Is It Actually Worth Using?

People exploring a narrow street in a colorful city in beautiful, sunny Italy

I love trip planning . Reading about a destination, learning its history, and discovering all the cool things to see and do (and eat) is one of the many things I like about traveling.

When I first started backpacking, planning a budget trip was a challenge because you could only really rely on out-of-date guide books or questionable online forums.

These days, however, it’s never been easier to fill out an itinerary. Researching activities, reading reviews and booking excursions can be done months in advance from the comfort of home or as a last-minute decision if you like to travel spontaneously.

One of the websites I use a lot when I travel is GetYourGuide .

GetYourGuide is a marketplace for tours, activities, and excursions. It has everything from skip-the-line museum tickets and walking tours to winery tours and adventure activities — and everything in-between. That includes major “must-see” sights as well as off-the-beaten-path activities too.

Here’s everything you need to know about GYG to help you plan your next trip, have fun, and save money!

Table of Contents

What Kind of Activities Does GetYourGuide Offer?

My experience using get your guide, so, is gyg worth using.

GetYourGuide has a ton of activities in destinations all around the world, but they usually break down into a few different categories:

Tickets – GYG sells tickets to museums, galleries, theme parks, and everything in between. These are often skip-the-line tickets, which are super helpful if you’re visiting a busy attraction.

Public tours – This is what most activities are, including walking tours, guided hikes, whale watching excursions, vineyard trips, etc. You pay a fee and join a small group of fellow travelers.

Private tours – From private walking tours to private guided hikes, if you have a larger budget (or are traveling with a small group), you can find all kinds of guides here that offer more exclusive activities.

Day trips – If you’re staying in a large city, you’ll find countless day trips (and even multi-day trips) further afield. These can be to national parks, wineries, beaches, and more. They usually include transportation to and from your accommodation as well as a meal.

Transportation – Airport transfers, private drivers, and public transportation passes can all be found on GYG.

For most activities, GYG is promoting a local operator. They’re just the middleman helping facilitate your planning. However, they also have their own “Originals” experiences that are created in partnership with a local operator and are only available to book on GYG. Originals experiences include Turning the Lights on at the Vatican Museums , Wine Tasting in the Eiffel Tower , and an exclusive before-hours tour of the Museum of Modern Art in NYC.

My wine bottle on a table during a wine tour with GetYourGuide in Bologna, italy

Like most travel search engines, what’s great about GYG is that everything is in one place. This is especially important for experiences because most big cities have tons of tour operators. That means that if you’re searching just via Google, you’ll probably miss a lot.

So, I like that GYG puts everything in one place for me so I can bounce around and compare activities prices, durations, and more — all from one website/app.

I plan on using GYG on my upcoming trip to Japan as there are a ton of cool activities and tours available, from tea ceremonies in Kyoto to watching sumo training sessions in Tokyo to trying traditional Japanese archery in Hiroshima .

If you’re looking to simplify your travel planning and find cool activities for your next trip, GYG is a great place to start. You can not only find fun excursions and tours but you’ll be able to read reviews and compare prices to see if those activities meet your needs. It’s a simple, easy-to-use website and app that can really add depth to your travels.

And not only do they run their own unique tours and activities but they are a reseller for thousands of others. That means that you’re booking with local companies, ensuring most of the money you spend is staying in the community.

Whether you like to plan your trips in advance or stumble into new activities on the fly, GetYourGuide is a helpful website and app that can ensure you make the most of your time abroad. Foodies, history buffs, nightowls, backpackers, adrenaline junkies — GYG offers unique activities for every travel style and budget, allowing you to dive deeper into your destination, connect with local guides and other travelers, and have more unique experiences.

Book Your Trip: Logistical Tips and Tricks

Book Your Flight Find a cheap flight by using Skyscanner . It’s my favorite search engine because it searches websites and airlines around the globe so you always know no stone is being left unturned.

Book Your Accommodation You can book your hostel with Hostelworld . If you want to stay somewhere other than a hostel, use Booking.com as it consistently returns the cheapest rates for guesthouses and hotels.

Don’t Forget Travel Insurance Travel insurance will protect you against illness, injury, theft, and cancellations. It’s comprehensive protection in case anything goes wrong. I never go on a trip without it as I’ve had to use it many times in the past. My favorite companies that offer the best service and value are:

  • SafetyWing (best for everyone)
  • Insure My Trip (for those 70 and over)
  • Medjet (for additional evacuation coverage)

Want to Travel for Free? Travel credit cards allow you to earn points that can be redeemed for free flights and accommodation — all without any extra spending. Check out my guide to picking the right card and my current favorites to get started and see the latest best deals.

Guide to Catamaran Cruises

A catamaran cruise in cancun is a wonderful way to explore some of nature’s greatest creations..

Guide to Catamaran Cruises

Catamaran cruises are like a private, serene and luxurious version of a cruise. Instead of getting caught up in the hustle and bustle of an oversized ocean liner with restrictive schedules and shared spaces, a catamaran offers an entirely unique sense of freedom and self-direction.

Our Cancun Adventures’ captains love to show our guests an up close and personal version of the sea via our yacht and sailboat charters. While on these personalized tours, you will get to see different parts of nearby islands, snorkel some of the world’s best-loved reefs and enjoy a gourmet lunch.

Learn more about this wonderful way to explore some of nature’s greatest creations and book your private catamaran tour today!

What is a Catamaran?

A catamaran is an oversized sailboat that offers a unique level of comfort due to its structure, which contains two hulls rather than one. This design keeps the boat balanced while navigating the sea, so you can unwind without clinging to your drink over every single wave.

What’s more, catamarans range in size and, with Cancun Adventures, you can choose from the 410 Catamaran Lagoon or the 440 Catamaran Leopard. Depending on which size of catamaran you choose to charter, you will have access to various deck layouts and private spaces where you can suntan, grab drinks from the bar and enjoy an island-inspired meal.

Another advantage of the catamaran is that they have shallow hulls, which means you can anchor practically anywhere and explore beaches and islands that would otherwise be off limits on a boat tour. This makes the catamaran ideal for tourists who want to discover some of the truly spectacular hidden gems throughout the Cancun region.

What is a Catamaran?

Tips for your catamaran tour

  • Pack light Use a soft-sided bag to pack only the essentials when you are boarding a catamaran cruise. A swimsuit, towel, a change of clothes, sunglasses and a hat should be the only things you need when chartering a catamaran trip with Cancun Adventures.
  • Wear sun protection While sailing on a catamaran may feel breezy, the sun’s rays (and its reflection off the water) remains strong. We recommend wearing sun protective clothing. Sunscreen (even the biodegradable kind) contains chemicals and/or oils that can damage the reef sea life and fragile ecosystem.
  • Waterproof belongings As you will be surrounded by the beautiful ocean on your catamaran tour, it is recommended to safeguard your personal belongings. Electronics (phones, etc.) and any essential documents should be placed in waterproof cases or plastic bags.

Avoid! Third party that book via individual companies or operators. I booked a transfer from hotel ‘advertised’ as ticket entry then received confirmation which stated I needed an extra 75 euros per person to enter a theme park which I thought may have been included in the deal…. Only to find in the small print that I needed to pay more! READ THIS PART… the worst part… I tried to cancel 5 minutes after placing the booking only to be told I could not cancel or get a refund as the booking was less than 24 hours away. Ok I get less than 24 hours away but I only paid 5 minutes ago, it’s not as if I’ve used any services yet!!! Avoid avoid avoid! I lost money!!

Use GET YOUR GUIDE for all of your excursion bookings!

We decided to book all of our excursions for our trip to Europe with Get Your Guide.com. I am very glad that we did. All of trips were located easily in one place. The instructions, vouchers, tour info, etc. were all right there when we needed it. Their email reminders arrived in a timely manner to remind us of our upcoming meeting points and times. There prices compared to other companies were equal. We will be sure to use GetYourGuide.com in the future!

Excellent Pompeii tour!

We used Get Your Guide for a tour of Pompeii and it was fantastic! Booking was easy and they provided very detailed instructions on where to meet. Our guide was so knowledgeable with lots of information, stories, and humor. We would have missed out on so much if we’d tried to tour Pompeii on our own. Definitely recommend GYG for this tour.

Getyourguide.com Almaty Kazakhstan is a scam!

I booked the "Almaty: Charyn Canyon, Kolsay, and Kaindy Lakes Day Trip" tour for June 17, 2024, through GetYourGuide.com (1 Adult, English, 16 hours, AED 216.71). Despite calling the number provided on the voucher several times, I received no response. I then contacted support via chat, and the agent, Christina Botoctoy, was unhelpful and kept repeating the same information, making me wait endlessly as they couldn't reach the number on my voucher. This company is a scam. Please beware and avoid booking any tours through GetYourGuide.com

We've used GYG for a few excursions during our 6 week visit to Europe and had no problems at all. I will continue to use this service and recommend them highly.

Change your homestay family

GetYourGuide needs to check into who they have as family homestays in Sapa. I was so looking forward to my homestay and was so disappointed as the family was extremely unfriendly and did not even introduce them selves to me, they mad me feel extremely uncomfortable for my entire stay, with very little being said. I am sure that GetYourGuide could find a much more friendlier family than the one that they have for their Sapa Homestay. You need to look into the families a lot more as I felt this family was only after the money.

Had a great experience using GetYourGuide on a trip to Italy. Booked 6 tours and all of the were very good to fantastic!! We did tours in Florence, Cinque Terre, Lucca, Montepulciano and Sienna and honestly couldn't have been happier. Great communication from them in Cinque Terre telling me when the guide would get there including his picture. All the guides were knowledgeable and friendly. I had to change the number of people on one of the trips before we left, and they took care of it promptly and provided the refund within a day. Would absolutely use this service again!

Great app and made booking our tours really easy. Comes with reminders and directions so you’ve no excuse to get lost or be late. Booked 2 bike tours in different cities and were really happy with both.

Amazing Resource for Great Tours and Tickets

Booking on GetYourGuide is so easy, and if plans change and one needs to cancel, that is also easy! This has become my go-to option when looking for tours and tickets during my stays around Europe! Great value and great guides!

Great experience

It’s got a bit of everything. We started with a stop at a local mountain folk house where they talked us through how they produce some of their local specialities. There was even a taster session and the opportunity to purchase some of their home made goods. We then had a go on the quads and also a camel ride. After some recharging time, they laid on a massive spread. All traditional foods and drink. We had an amazing spot to watch the sunset from and then the evening entertainment began. Local singing and dancing followed by a fire show as a finale. The day was perfectly spread out at a pace that was easily manageable in the 32c heat. They don’t rush the experience as a tickbox exercise. An experience that will not be forgotten for decades to come. It may even be one of the best excursions I’ve been on in a long while.

Reliable and enjoyable

The app worked seamlessly and our guides were always very knowledgeable with great English skills. The guided walking tour was a great introduction to the city and the foodie tour was yummy fun.

Two Day Tour of Petra,Wadi Rum and Dead Sea

We had a wonderful tour of Petra, Wadi Rum and Dead Sea courtesy our guide Mr Qutaibah from Jordan Tours and Travels. He was very professional in conduct and ensured that we had had the best experience. He catered for requests of everyone in the group and ensured that we were comfortable throughout. Thank You Get Your Guide and Mr Qutaibah.

Château de Chambord & Château de Chenonceau

Incredible experience! Best way to see these, Château de Chambord & Château de Chenonceau in central France. The guide was superb; English and Spanish well spoken, interesting stories, and a very kind lady. We had a small group of nine people, and our guide drove us in a great mini van. Well worth the price and highly recommended. Get Your Guide was easy to use on the go. Easy to use

Everything was great except the fact that we didn't know that we had to bus down to Falmouth to board the boat, although Jen, our bus driver was awesome! She made the long bus ride soooo much better. The tour guide was great also!

Containerize an application

For the rest of this guide, you'll be working with a simple todo list manager that runs on Node.js. If you're not familiar with Node.js, don't worry. This guide doesn't require any prior experience with JavaScript.

Prerequisites

  • You have installed the latest version of Docker Desktop .
  • You have installed a Git client .
  • You have an IDE or a text editor to edit files. Docker recommends using Visual Studio Code .

Get the app

Before you can run the application, you need to get the application source code onto your machine.

Clone the getting-started-app repository using the following command:

View the contents of the cloned repository. You should see the following files and sub-directories.

Build the app's image

To build the image, you'll need to use a Dockerfile. A Dockerfile is simply a text-based file with no file extension that contains a script of instructions. Docker uses this script to build a container image.

In the getting-started-app directory, the same location as the package.json file, create a file named Dockerfile . You can use the following commands to create a Dockerfile based on your operating system.

In the terminal, run the following commands.

Make sure you're in the getting-started-app directory. Replace /path/to/getting-started-app with the path to your getting-started-app directory.

Create an empty file named Dockerfile .

In the Windows Command Prompt, run the following commands.

Make sure you're in the getting-started-app directory. Replace \path\to\getting-started-app with the path to your getting-started-app directory.

In PowerShell, run the following commands.

Using a text editor or code editor, add the following contents to the Dockerfile:

Build the image using the following commands:

In the terminal, make sure you're in the getting-started-app directory. Replace /path/to/getting-started-app with the path to your getting-started-app directory.

Build the image.

The docker build command uses the Dockerfile to build a new image. You might have noticed that Docker downloaded a lot of "layers". This is because you instructed the builder that you wanted to start from the node:18-alpine image. But, since you didn't have that on your machine, Docker needed to download the image.

After Docker downloaded the image, the instructions from the Dockerfile copied in your application and used yarn to install your application's dependencies. The CMD directive specifies the default command to run when starting a container from this image.

Finally, the -t flag tags your image. Think of this as a human-readable name for the final image. Since you named the image getting-started , you can refer to that image when you run a container.

The . at the end of the docker build command tells Docker that it should look for the Dockerfile in the current directory.

Start an app container

Now that you have an image, you can run the application in a container using the docker run command.

Run your container using the docker run command and specify the name of the image you just created:

The -d flag (short for --detach ) runs the container in the background. This means that Docker starts your container and returns you to the terminal prompt. You can verify that a container is running by viewing it in Docker Dashboard under Containers , or by running docker ps in the terminal.

The -p flag (short for --publish ) creates a port mapping between the host and the container. The -p flag takes a string value in the format of HOST:CONTAINER , where HOST is the address on the host, and CONTAINER is the port on the container. The command publishes the container's port 3000 to 127.0.0.1:3000 ( localhost:3000 ) on the host. Without the port mapping, you wouldn't be able to access the application from the host.

After a few seconds, open your web browser to http://localhost:3000 . You should see your app.

Add an item or two and see that it works as you expect. You can mark items as complete and remove them. Your frontend is successfully storing items in the backend.

At this point, you have a running todo list manager with a few items.

If you take a quick look at your containers, you should see at least one container running that's using the getting-started image and on port 3000 . To see your containers, you can use the CLI or Docker Desktop's graphical interface.

Run the following docker ps command in a terminal to list your containers.

Output similar to the following should appear.

In Docker Desktop, select the Containers tab to see a list of your containers.

In this section, you learned the basics about creating a Dockerfile to build an image. Once you built an image, you started a container and saw the running app.

Related information:

  • Dockerfile reference
  • docker CLI reference
  • Build with Docker guide

Next, you're going to make a modification to your app and learn how to update your running application with a new image. Along the way, you'll learn a few other useful commands.

YouTube is copying X’s most interesting feature

catamarano get your guide

Happy Emancipation Day! Tech Brief will not publish Thursday as we observe the Juneteenth holiday today, but we’ll be back next Tuesday morning. Send news tips to: [email protected] .

YouTube is copying X’s most interesting feature.

Since Elon Musk bought Twitter in 2022 and turned it into X, he has relaxed the site’s speech rules and laid off many of the people responsible for enforcing them. But he has embraced one content moderation idea that predated his arrival: a feature called Community Notes, formerly Birdwatch, that enlists users to fact-check and add context to potentially misleading posts.

When a user proposes a Community Note, other users are asked to review that note’s helpfulness before it gets published. If there’s wide agreement the note is useful, it will then appear below the post in question for all X users to see. The feature has led to public debunking of posts by users ranging from cryptocurrency scammers to President Biden — and on several occasions, Musk himself.

The idea of Community Notes is now spreading.

This week, Google’s YouTube began testing a similar as-yet-unnamed feature, inviting a group of users to start proposing notes that add context to others’ videos. Examples include “notes that clarify when a song is meant to be a parody, point out when a new version of a product being reviewed is available, or let viewers know when older footage is mistakenly portrayed as a current event,” the company said in a blog post .

What to know about Juneteenth and its historical significance

What to know about Juneteenth and its historical significance

Like X, YouTube said it will use a special type of ranking system, known as a “ bridging-based algorithm ,” to decide which proposed notes deserve promotion. Bridging systems are designed to prioritize ideas that appeal to a broad range of people, rather than just those on one side of an issue.

That feature means a note or fact check must gain approval from users who have previously disagreed with each other to appear on the site. The mechanism has helped Community Notes to avoid being taken over by either the right or the left, although there may still be ways to game it.

For tech companies, letting users do the fact-checking holds a lot of appeal.

It’s cheaper than hiring professional fact-checkers and relatively easy to scale up once the system is in place. Perhaps most important, it gets the company out of the controversial role of arbitrating directly what the truth is.

In YouTube’s case, spokesperson Elena Hernandez said the notes are meant to “build on” other forms of context that the company already adds to some videos, such as information panels that point to reliable sources on controversial topics.

“One of the challenges we’ve faced is how to raise third-party context on a video in a way that is specific, detailed and timely to the video itself, and can be done at scale across the huge variety of content on YouTube,” Hernandez said via email. “We’re testing notes as a feature that can help address this.”

Executives at X say they’re pleased to see YouTube following their lead.

Keith Coleman , X’s vice president of product, helped to spearhead the original Birdwatch project at Twitter before Musk bought it. He said YouTube’s move to test a similar feature is “a testament to the power of the Community Notes approach that gives voice to the people.”

Coleman cited research that found Community Notes reduce the spread of misinformation on X, often prompting the person who wrote the misleading post to delete it . Whereas traditional fact-checking is often “polarizing,” he added, one recent study found that people across the political spectrum rated Community Notes as more trustworthy than a simple misinformation flag.

In October, Musk announced that creators on X who have a post corrected by Community Notes would not be able to earn money from that post. That won’t be the case on YouTube for now, as it plans to experiment with its notes feature before deciding whether to roll it out more widely.

Still, crowdsourced fact-checks are far from a silver bullet for online scams or lies.

The rigorous review process for Community Notes means they often appear on a post only after it has reached a wide audience, blunting their impact. And while X reported that it showed nearly 30,000 notes in the first four months of this year, that probably represents a small fraction of all the misleading posts circulating on the platform. Last fall, an analysis by NewsGuard of 250 widely viewed X posts advancing misinformation about the Israel-Gaza war found that just 32 percent were flagged by Community Notes.

In December, after one of his posts was flagged by Community Notes, Musk claimed that the system was being “ gamed by state actors .”

While Community Notes is a promising feature, it works best as a supplement to conventional fact-checking and content moderation, said Alexios Mantzarlis , director of the Security, Trust and Safety Initiative at Cornell Tech and a former product policy manager at Google. He noted that YouTube has rolled back some misinformation stances ahead of the 2024 U.S. presidential election, as has rival Meta.

“If this is intended to be the sole countermeasure against 2020 election denialism claims” that no longer violate YouTube’s policies, he said, “it feels insufficient.”
