Open Regatta
Charleston Yacht Club hosts an open regatta the third weekend in July every year. The competition is open to all one-design fleets and all are welcome. After two days of sailing, the festivities are concluded with awards. Two club trophies are awarded at this regatta: the George Lockwood Trophy and the Women’s Sailing award.

If you are interested, please contact Ron or me at [email protected] Historically, regatta weekend is one of the busiest weekends of the year. To assist with parking and logistics we are asking members with boat parking spots to please take their boats home for the weekend if possible. This is not mandatory but would be greatly appreciated. During the regatta weekend the ramps will be closed from 10am to 5pm, and only accessible for participants and committee/chase boats. If you wish to put your boat in the water prior to 10am, you will be required to take the trailer offsite as parking spots on club grounds are limited. The Ladies Auxiliary will be kicking regatta week off with the Cocktail Party on Wednesday June 12th. Friday night (the 14 th ), Martin's BBQ will set up and serve a BBQ buffet with all of the fixings, while we listen to Bluegrass as the sun sets over the harbor. The actual Regatta will take place over the weekend, and we will celebrate Father's Day with a brunch provided by the cooking committee on Sunday morning. All-female regatta starts Friday
Two local sailors will try to steer their all-female crews to victory at the second biennial Women’s Championship Regatta hosted June 28-30 by the New York Yacht Club.
Cory Sertl and Hannah Swett both will be representing the host. Sertl also will represent Conanicut Yacht Club. The regatta is sailed on a one-design fleet of Sonars.
The inaugural edition of the women’s championship for the Joan H. Towse Trophy was sailed in June 2022. According to Stuart Streuli, director of communications, “the ultimate grade” for any recurring event is the level of teams returning for the ensuing edition. With eight of the top-10 teams committed, including defending champion Alie Toppa and her College of Charleston crew, the future looks bright.
“There’s nothing like the pure simplicity of fleet racing in one-design boats,” Toppa said. “The enjoyment of tough competition in a 20-boat fleet being run by a top-tier race committee is pretty hard to beat. The Women’s Championship is exactly that for me. Coming back to defend my title felt inevitable.”
During the inaugural event, eight points separated the top-six finishers after 11 races, including Swett in third place (four points back) and Sertl in fourth place (six points back). Like Toppa, Swett will be at the starting line Friday. Her team remains unchanged.
“We had the most fun reconnecting with sailing friends from the past,” Swett said about the ’22 edition. “My whole team is committed again for this year. I think the fleet looks even more competitive, if that’s even possible. We are very excited to go sailing.”
The silver medalist for the last edition, who finished between Toppa and Swett, also is returning with an unchanged crew. Erin Maxwell, a former 470 world champion, will helm the team that was named 11 Less Distractions in 2022, which references the four sailors’ combined number of children.
“Newport is a great venue for racing,” she said. “It was great to see so many competitive sailors at the event last time. Looking at the list for this year’s event, it might be an even stronger group.”
The 2022 championship was the first time the four women had sailed together as a team. Since then, they have sailed together in another regatta and have been building their teamwork.
“Similar to last time, the key will be consistency,” she said. “Having a deep race in the last race was hard to recover from without a throw out, and that cost us winning.”
Other yacht clubs being represented include the Vermilion Boat Club (Ohio), Beverly Yacht Club (Marion, Mass.), Larchmont Yacht Club (New York), Corinthian Yacht Club (Marblehead, Mass.), Noroton Yacht Club (Darien, Conn.), Wianno Yacht Club (Barnstable, Mass.), Newport Harbor Yacht Club (California), Charleston Yacht Club (South Carolina), St. Mary’s College of Maryland, American Yacht Club (Rye, N.Y.), Royal Canadian Yacht Club (Toronto), Royal Hamilton Amateur Dinghy Club (Bermuda) and Stone Horse Yacht Club (Harwich Port, Mass.).
