Australia luxury yacht charter

Boasting the world's greatest natural reef plus dazzling waterfront cities, rainforest framed beaches and tropical waters, the many sides of Australia provide unparalleled cruising possibilities in Oceania. With such vast and diverse cruising grounds, a luxury yacht charter in Australia has something for everyone. Mix bright lights and iconic sights in Sydney with golden beaches, discover final-frontier beauty in the Kimberley, dive into the natural wonders of the Great Barrier Reef or swoon over shifting sands and shallows of the Whitsunday Islands.

Australia yacht season and weather

Located in the Southern Hemisphere, Australia offers warmer temperatures and sunnier days during what would be the cold winter season in higher latitudes.

The Great Barrier Reef and The Whitsundays offer ideal sailing conditions during Australia's winter months, from April to November before the wet season begins from December to March. Temperature highs during this time range from 25 to 30°C. The city of Sydney and surrounding coastlines meanwhile are best visited during the dry season which occurs between the months of November to late January, with temperature highs ranging from 23 to 26°C.

Australia yacht charter itineraries

The majority of Australia charters are taken around the Great Barrier Reef and the Whitsundays where there are many sheltered anchorages for overnighting.

Cairns is a popular jumping off point for Great Barrier Reef charters and Cairns Marlin Marina accommodates yachts up to 140 metres. Crystalbrook Superyacht Marina in Port Douglas has 135 berths that can accommodate yachts up to 50 metres.

For the Whitsundays, Coral Sea Marina near Airlie Beach accommodates yachts up to 80 metres and Hamilton Island Marina has slips for yachts up to 45 metres.

The Great Barrier Reef is the world’s largest coral reef system, comprising more than 3,000 reef chains, coral cays and picturesque islands. Charters are characterised by short hops and a dizzying array of picturesque stops. Set sail from Cairns to the Ribbon Reefs, where tropical fish abound. Scuba dive at Ribbon Reef No.5, nicknamed Andy’s Postcard, and anchor overnight under a jaw-dropping blanket of stars before revelling in more sublime snorkelling and underwater magic at Pixie’s Pinnacle and Cold Hole. Next up, cruise to the bewilderingly beautiful beaches of Lizard Island and the aptly named Blue Lagoon. Around 45 nautical miles south of Lizard Island, sample a little Australian history at Cooktown – the site of Captain Cook’s landing. Your skipper can then cherry pick the best snorkelling spots en route to an idyllic picnic on a private and secluded sandy cay before heading south to the fine dining and five-star spas of exclusive Port Douglas, 30 nautical miles north of your home port of Cairns.

Another exceptional charter ground brimming with easy passages and sublime cruising is the Whitsunday Islands . This spellbinding archipelago boasts more than 70 isles with show-stopping snorkelling and diving, exceptional corals and a dusting of exclusive resorts. Charters often depart from Hamilton Island, where picturesque beaches abound. Cruise 10 nautical miles to the snorkelling paradise of Neck Bay and spend a tranquil night on anchor before making passage to Long Island Sound and the protected waters of Cid Island. Kayak along the mangroves and watch the sun melt into the horizon at Katoomba Bank. Along the west coast of Whitsunday Island, unleash the water toys – this is one of the few areas where jet skis are authorised. Hook Island (10 nautical miles north) offers more incredible diving and snorkeling, with reef fish, turtles, dolphins and manta rays often spotted in the Whitsunday Passage. Don’t miss the Outer Reef, where the dramatic drop-offs are home to turtles, reef sharks and barracuda. Finally, cruise south to the iconic sweeping sands of Whitehaven Beach.

While the Whitsundays and the Great Barrier Reef are justifiably popular for charters, Australia’s other coastlines offer equally exciting cruising options depending on your interests. Sydney Harbour boasts iconic sights, exceptional waterside dining and ample coves. Hermit Bay, the western shore of Shark Island and Athol Bay offer some of the best sunset views overlooking the Sydney skyline. Short coastal hops bring you to the Hawkesbury River, perfect for exploring by tender.

Alternatively, opt for a final frontier explorer adventure and cruise along the wild and awe-inspiring north-west coastline. The Kimberley is three times the size of England and punctuated by plunging gorges, swirling rivers, rainforested lagoons, and more than 2,500 uninhabited islands. There’s enough to keep you busy here for days, weeks or even months, and it’s a true nature lover’s paradise.

Getting to australia.

The main airports in Sydney, Brisbane and Cairns all handle commercial and private aircraft.

For Kimberley, fly direct to Broome from Perth all year round.

In the Whitsundays, Hamilton Island has a small airport, which handles commercial and private aircraft.

Legal requirements

Unless you are an Australian or New Zealand citizen, all travellers to the country will need a Visa. The issuing of a Control Permit is required to cruise Australian waters.

All vessels are required by law to notify the Australian border force prior to arrival and must clearly display the International Pratique Q-flag.

On arrival, yachts must go directly to a recognised port of entry and undergo a biosecurity check before guests or crew can step on shore. Australia has particularly strict rules regarding the importation of animals, foodstuffs and plants.

Foreign flagged vessels coming to Australia that wish to charter do not require importation under the 2019 Special Recreational Vessel Act. Taxation is only payable on the charter cost (10%), not the value of the vessel.

Let us organise your perfect Australia yacht charter itinerary.

Our expert brokers know the cruising grounds intimately, both personally through first-hand experience and in real time through contacts on the ground. Your itinerary will be tailored specifically for you to deliver the holiday you want.

New to charter?

The Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA) is due at the time of the final charter payment. Under MYBA terms, this sum is usually equivalent to 30 per cent of the total charter fee, but may be up to 40 per cent in some cases.

Intended to cover the operating expenses of a charter as explained under Charter Terms, such as fuel, food, drinks, port fees and ad hoc incidentals, the APA will be given to the captain before the start of your charter. The Captain will ensure that the yacht is fully fuelled and provisioned when you step on board. While an up-to-date summary of accounts can be requested at any time during your charter, a full set of accounts will normally be submitted by your captain at the end of the cruise. If, during the charter, the expenditure exceeds the sum already paid, additional cash funds will be required at once.

All outstanding bills from the yacht charter should be settled in cash or by bank transfer before your final disembarkation. Of course, any remaining credit at the end of your charter will be reimbursed to you in full. On request, transfer arrangements to and from the yacht can be made by Burgess or by the yacht’s captain, payment for which will be deducted from your APA.

The land of contrasts, Australia wows with its sheer scale and sublime scenery. One of the best ways to explore this extraordinary country is by luxury charter yacht , so we take a closer look at cruising its spectacular waters.

In this article:

  • Interested in booking a luxury yacht charter?

Luckily for luxury yacht-goers, life in Australia centres away from the harsh interior to its beautiful and spectacularly diverse coast. From world-class cities to awe-inspiring natural wonders, there is so much to discover on a private yacht charter here.

Each season in Australia is suited to cruising a different region, making it a year-round charter destination, and an alternative to the yachting hotspots of the Mediterranean and Caribbean .

To help plan your Australian adventure, we have put together a guide on exploring five of the top cruising areas in Australia by luxury yacht. The only hard part will be deciding where to go.

Stylish and sophisticated, Sydney  is an incredibly handsome city and this is mainly down to its dazzling harbor. With such good looks, Sydney’s waterways are also the reason why the city has flourished in recent years as the heart of Australia’s superyacht industry.

Synonymous with the city are the Sydney Opera House and the Sydney Harbour Bridge, and there is no better way to take in these iconic sights than from the comfort of a luxury yacht on an exclusive day charter, whether celebrating a special occasion or hosting a corporate function.

Day yacht charters are another popular option for those after ringside seats at Sydney’s harbor-side events. The famous New Year’s celebrations are followed by the Australia Day fireworks on 26 th January and Boxing Day welcomes the yachting spectacle of the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race .

Visitors will be unable to resist the charms of the city and, once enticed ashore, there is a wealth of attractions to explore, from museums, art galleries and pretty parks to a vibrant foodie scene, upmarket waterfront bars and designer shopping.

But in contrast to this vibrant, cosmopolitan hub are 150 miles of meandering coastline, offering secluded coves, pristine beaches and national parks. It is well worth extending your stay and exploring the laid-back beach life and idyllic nature reserves within easy reach of inner Sydney.

Locations not to be missed are the sun-kissed shores of Sugarloaf Bay, Manly, Palm Beach and Cronulla Beach. While the natural estuary of Pittwater, the Royal National Park and the Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park are resplendent in wild beauty and an array of outdoor activities.

The best time to visit Sydney and its surrounds on a charter vacation is during the Australian summer, which runs from November to March and, for the ultimate wow factor, embark outside the Sydney Opera House at the Man o’ War steps.

Great Barrier Reef in the Whitsundays, Queensland Australia.

One of the seven natural wonders of the world, the Great Barrier Reef is the largest coral reef on the planet and a regular entry on even the most discerning traveler’s bucket list. Thankfully, a burgeoning charter scene means exploring the natural wonder by luxury yacht is now possible.

The reef runs parallel to the Queensland coastline for 1,400 miles, from Bundaberg in the south to the tip of Cape York in the north, and is comprised of more than 3,000 individual reef systems, coral cays and picturesque islands.

Charter vacations to the Great Barrier Reef are ideal for those wanting to get back to nature and explore the fascinating underwater world of the Coral Sea, as well as bask in the cruising ground’s natural beauty and utter seclusion.

Departing from Cairns Marlin Marina or the Reef Marina at Port Douglas, yacht-goers can reach the inner reef within under an hour and be at the outer reef in time to watch the sunset.

Diving and snorkelling opportunities are, of course, rife with Ribbons Reef, Dynamite Pass, Cod Hole and Heron Bommie among the top sites. To make the most of your experience, ensure your charter yacht is equipped with snorkelling and scuba diving equipment.

As well as more than 1,500 species of fish, the rainbow-coloured reef is also home to sea turtles, reef sharks, rays, dolphins and migrating minke whales. While, deserted islands such as Lizard Island and the Hope Isles, enable you to stretch your legs or unwind on golden sand beaches.

Australia’s winter - between May and September - is the best time to cruise the reef.

Made up of 74 islands, the Whitsundays are the ultimate Aussie paradise. Not only is the scenery postcard-picture perfect, but the warm, turquoise waters offer the best sailing in the Southern Hemisphere and, thus, the archipelago makes for a dreamy luxury yacht charter destination.

Only five of the islands are inhabited and the vast majority are designated national parks. Plus, located off the central Queensland coast, the Whitsundays form part of the Great Barrier Reef, so finding a secluded slice of island paradise is as easy as accessing world-class dive sites.

Charterers can board their luxury yacht from Abel Point Marina at Airlie Beach on the mainland or fly into Hamilton Island – the largest and most developed island of the Whitsundays – and access the archipelago from here.

Regularly topping polls of the world’s best beaches is Whitehaven Beach and this three-mile-long stretch of brilliant white, silica sand is found along the south east coast of Whitsunday Island. For unmissable views, head to Tongue Point and soak up the beauty of Hill Inlet.

Another iconic sight in the Whitsundays is Heart Reef, a stunning composition of coral that, as its name suggests, is naturally formed in the shape of a heart. Located in Hardy Reef, the natural wonder is best experienced from the air by seaplane or helicopter.

Elsewhere, on Hook Island, Narra Inlet, Manta Ray Bay and Maureen’s Cove make for idyllic spots, and the scores of other islands serve as destinations for beach time, bushwalks or simply as a backdrop to a scenic mooring.

Similar to the Great Barrier Reef, the most suitable time to visit the island-chain is from May to September.

Although its charms are more subtle than those of its showy northern sister, Sydney, Melbourne is a city that rewards inquisitive luxury yacht-goers. From its historic arcades to the surrounding coastal areas, there are no end of hidden gems to uncover when cruising in Melbourne.

Arty, scenic and cosmopolitan, Melbourne is the capital of Victoria and sits in the 164-mile-long horseshoe-shaped Philip Bay. From the vantage point of a superyacht, champagne can be sipped while taking in the breath-taking cityscape and glamorous waterfront stretch of Southbank.

Step ashore to explore the tiny alleyways, which conceal award-winning restaurants, trendy cafes, rooftop bars, designer boutiques and colourful street art. Theatres, museums, art galleries, and picturesque parks and gardens likewise thrive in this bohemian city.

As the home of the Australian Football League (AFL), the Australian Open and the Australian Grand Prix, Melbourne has built a reputation as the country’s sporting capital, and day or event charters can, of course, be arranged around these fixtures.

From its historic arcades to the surrounding coastal areas, there are no end of hidden gems to uncover when cruising in Melbourne

A longer vacation to Melbourne allows time to visit the beautiful Mornington Peninsular. Sandy bays and rugged ocean coastlines offer varied landscapes, and activities range from swimming with wild dolphins to venturing to the wineries of the hinterland.

Spot fairy penguins, koalas and Australian fur seals, meanwhile, on Phillip Island, located just 500 metres off the coast, or adventure westwards and experience the splendour of the Great Ocean Road coastline, renowned for the stunning limestone stacks known as the Twelve Apostles.

To see Melbourne and its surrounds at their finest, undertake a yacht charter in the city between the summer months of November and March.

yacht cruising in the Kimberleys, australia

It may be the least explored of Australia’s superyacht destinations, but The Kimberley  is well worth the visit. This is especially true for charterers looking to get off the beaten track as the rugged region is one of the world’s last wilderness frontiers.

Stretching across the entire northeastern corner of Australia, Kimberley is reached via the coastal outback town of Broome. Arrive in style on a helicopter as your yacht awaits set against the dramatic backdrop of the Horizontal Falls.

Commencing a yacht charter from here, charterers will encounter vast stretches of rust-colored cliffs punctuated by plunging waterfalls, powdery white beaches and luscious patches of rainforest.

Nature lovers will love the amazing wildlife inhabiting the region. Crocodiles bathe in mangrove swamps, whales frolic in the turquoise waters, sea turtles nest on the sandy shores, and jabiru, eagles and kingfishers soar overhead.

red rock beach the kimberleys australia

As one of the world’s last wilderness frontiers, Kimberley is perfect for charterers looking to get off the beaten track

Native mammals such as rock wallabies, quolls and possums also call Kimberley home, there are fantastic fishing opportunities at Berkeley River Gorge and the King George, and the sublime wonders of Montgomery Reef demand exploration.

The Kimberley landscape has been used as a canvas by Aboriginal artists over the past 40,000 years. Hundreds of rock art sites are found along the coast, with nearly every bay and island telling a compelling story of the struggle of early explorers, pioneers and pearlers.

The most suitable time to cruise in Kimberley is between May and September.

Australia yacht charter

Australia is blessed with some of the most beautiful yacht charter destinations in the world. Located in the South Pacific, with the Indian Ocean to the west, and the Pacific to the east, Australia is a yacht charter paradise. The Great Barrier Reef offers the Australian northeast coast with endless opportunities for yacht charters. With some of the world's best dive spots, uninhabited islands featuring secluded bays, pristine white sand beaches, and a world of peace, serenity, and tranquility, the world's biggest coral reef system is the most beautiful attraction for yacht charters in Australia.

How much to charter a yacht in Australia?

Every imaginable yacht can be found cruising along the coast and waters of Australia. At different price points, varying amenities, sizes, and purposes, you can find every kind of yacht that suits your needs. A 50-foot sailing yacht with four cabins can cost around $6,500 for a week's rent. An 82-foot catamaran, on the other hand, can cost around $60,000 for a week's rent; while a 119-foot motor yacht with five cabins costs around $110,000 for a week's rent in Australia.

What are the most popular yacht holidays in Australia?

With so many beautiful coastal cities, nearby islands, and over 200 marinas located all over the country, it can be a little daunting to find the best yacht charter holidays in Australia. However, if you want to discover the top sailing destinations, these spots are the Whitsunday Islands, Moreton Bay, and Sydney. The Whitsunday Islands is located in the middle of the Great Barrier Reef, and it's no wonder the group of islands is the most popular yacht charter destination in the country. There are 74 islands in this island group, with only six being inhabited. This means there are 68 islands to explore with no crowds, no structures, and very little development. With pristine white sands, crystal clear waters, a subtropical climate, and the most exotic underwater marine life, the Whitsundays top the bill for the most popular yacht charter destination in Australia.

On Brisbane's doorstep, Moreton Bay is another yacht charter destination that boasts of beauty and allure. Moreton Bay itself is the route of migratory humpback whales in the summer, where you'll also get to see dolphins and much other marine life in its waters. Moreton Island is also a stone's throw away from Brisbane, featuring beaches and wildlife. The North and South Stradbroke Islands are popular spots for locals and visitors, while Fraser Island is a definite must for yacht charters for its famous white-sand dunes and freshwater lakes. Dive enthusiasts will also take pleasure in the abundance of marine life in Moreton Bay, especially the shipwrecks that number to over 100.

The Sydney Harbour and Pittwater Bay are popular yacht charter destinations in the country. Cruising along the Harbour presents yachtsmen with beautiful views of the iconic Sydney Opera House and the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Located to the north of Sydney is Pittwater, offering little swell and reliable winds. There are three national parks inland, which make for a beautiful day excursion. Furthermore, the Hawkesbury River in Pittwater offers spectacular sandstone cliffs, uninhabited islands, and small towns worth discovering.

Where to go on a luxury yacht charter in Australia?

With more than 290 marinas found in Australia, a luxury yacht charter is easy to find. You can find a plethora of superyachts cruising along the Harbour in Sydney's Port Jackson, offering sunset cruises, corporate yacht parties, and even weddings onboard the most luxurious yachts you will ever see. About 2 hours away, Port Stephens features the Soldier's Point Marina, which has been awarded the Marina of the Year Award in 2007 and proclaims itself as a Four Seasons resort. Dubbed as "The Blue Water Paradise," Port Stephens has 19 miles of clean, white, sandy beaches and a bay that offers perfect sailing conditions.

The Gold Coast in Queensland is another yacht charter luxury destination due to its marine boat building industry. The coastal city is the headquarters for many internationally recognized marine brands, making it the first spot in the world to witness the most beautiful and most luxurious vessels to ever cruise on water. Home to nine luxury marinas, The Gold Coast is where you'll find mega yachts cruising on the Bay, and luxury yachts casually cruising on its famous Broadwater.

Airlie Beach, the gateway to the Whitsundays, is another luxury yacht charter destination. Tourists who want to visit the Whitsundays head to Airlie Beach, which is in itself, a beautiful coastal location with stunning beaches and world-class resorts. Australia is home to some of the world's best yachting destinations. With a lifestyle that includes spending time outdoors as a daily activity, a yacht charter in the land Down Under is simply the best way to truly experience this stunning country.

Whitsunday Rent A Yacht

The best place to charter a yacht in Australia

Check availability, if you're dreaming of a yacht charter in australia, you can't surpass the world-class scenery and ideal sailing conditions in queensland's whitsundays..

There are many places around the Australian coast to charter a yacht; however, few match the Whitsunday Islands’ convenience, conditions and beauty.

74 tropical islands make up an archipelago between the Mainland and the outer Great Barrier Reef. The islands are mostly uninhabited, with many offering pristine environments thanks to protection from long-standing National Park status. There are some island resorts, with Hamilton Island being the most accessible to those on a yacht charter.

The Whitsundays are an ideal location and backdrop for sailing, making them Australia’s yachting mecca and leading bareboat destination. If you’re planning a sailing holiday down under, this is the place!

In this post, we’ll touch on yacht charter destinations around Australia, why the Whitsundays are a stand-out sailing destination, and how to decide on and book a yacht charter that suits your crew.

yacht charter australia

What makes the Whitsundays the best place in Australia to charter a yacht?

The whitsundays are safe and protected.

The outer Great Barrier Reef acts as a barrier to large ocean swells. This means the islands are protected, and the waters are relatively calm.

Most anchorages are within 2 hours of each other, so there are plenty of opportunities to escape unfavourable winds and find a protected cove.

Experienced tourism industry

The Island’s proximity to the Mainland makes them easily accessible to holidaymakers, tourism operators and any help that may be needed.

Subtropical climate

Conditions are mild most of the year, and the waters are relatively warm.

Discover the pros and cons of seeing the Whitsundays at different times throughout the year.

There are so many things to do

On top of the scenery and sailing conditions, there are numerous things to do around the islands . Diving, snorkelling, fishing, hiking and lazing by island resort pools can be enjoyed throughout your charter.

No licence is required to charter a yacht in Australia’s Whitsundays

Anyone can enjoy a sailing holiday in the Whitsundays because you don’t need a boat license to hire a yacht in the region.

Bareboat charter companies will train their guests on how to operate their vessels, with the option to add a sail guide for those who need to build their confidence.

An original Australian yacht charter company

Whitsunday Rent a Yacht is the original bareboat charter company in the Whitsundays . We’ve been operating from Shute Harbour since the late 70s, making us one of Australia’s longest-running yacht charter companies.

The two main yacht charter options: Skippered or Bareboat

With a destination decision made, you need to choose the type of sailing holiday you want – a skippered or bareboat charter , and you’ll probably want to find out the costs of a charter too.

Bareboat sailing holidays

Bareboat charters are sailing holidays without a professional crew. You skipper the boat yourself, giving you the freedom and flexibility to set your itinerary.

Pros of a bareboat holiday

  • Freedom to decide where you go and how long you stay
  • Cater for your crew the way you like
  • Plan your holiday to be around the activities you enjoy, eg. relaxing, snorkelling, hiking or sailing.

Cons to a bareboat holiday

  • You need to operate the boat yourselves which can be daunting if you have minimal boating experience.
  • Manoeuvring the boat between locations requires “all hands on deck, meaning you can’t just kick back and let someone else do the driving, anchoring and navigating.

Skippered Sailing holidays

A skippered charter can range from a group sailing trip with other travellers you’ve never met to privately hiring a high-end yacht with a skipper and possibly additional professional crew members.

You can hire a boat usually reserved for bareboat charters and add a sail guide who acts like a skipper but with more of a focus on helping you learn to operate the vessel. Alternatively, some charter boat operators in Airlie Beach provide a fully crewed boat you can hire as a package.

Pros of a skippered charter

  • Skippers provide peace of mind for those looking to relax. Having a skipper will mean you can kick back and relax.
  • If you hire a boat usually reserved for bareboat hire, a skipper/sail guide will show you how to operate the boat, and if you are confident, they can leave you to continue as a bareboat charter.
  • Skippers are locals and will share local knowledge.
  • You can set the itinerary and decide where you want to go, just like on a bareboat yacht charter.

Cons to a skippered charter

  • You need to provide a cabin and food for the skipper.
  • Skippers are an additional cost on top of the yacht hire.

What does a yacht charter in Australia cost?

When determining the cost of a yacht charter, you need to consider the duration, the number of people, the type of boat, and the time of year.

Luxury newer boats will always cost more to hire than older vessels.

Skippered or crewed charters are more expensive than bareboat.

When you look at boat hire prices, remember to add petrol and your food and drinks on top of the boat hire costs. Also, if you wish to stay at an island resort in the Whitsundays, you will need to pay a berthing or mooring fee.

The cheapest way to charter a bareboat

You may have heard that Australian yacht charters are not cheap, but there are ways to make this holiday within reach for the budget-conscious.

  • Charter in the low season (summer in the Whitsundays)
  • Add more people to your crew. A crew of 8-10 ends up being the same, if not cheaper, than a hotel with sea views.
  • Charter a monohull; they are cheaper than catamarans

Don’t just take our word for it. Check out these videos from families who chartered with Whitsunday Rent a Yacht

What Choose

Sailing boat or Catamaran, what to sail in Australia

Embarking on an Australian sailing adventure with Yachting.Rent and unsure whether to choose a sailing boat or a catamaran? Both offer unique experiences, and the choice depends on your sailing ambitions, comfort needs, and personal preferences.

Sailing boats, embraced by traditional sailing enthusiasts, offer a dynamic, exhilarating sailing experience. They’re well-suited to navigate Australia’s expansive coastline, explore hidden coves, and undertake long, adventurous voyages. Sailing boats typically provide better upwind performance and are usually more fuel-efficient.

On the other hand, catamarans, renowned for their stability and spaciousness, provide a steady sailing experience with minimum rolling, making them an excellent choice for families, especially those with children or anyone prone to seasickness. Catamarans feature expansive deck spaces and larger living areas, perfect for relaxing, sunbathing, and socializing. They’re ideal for cruising through the turquoise waters of the Great Barrier Reef, anchoring in shallow bays, and enjoying leisurely exploration around the Whitsunday Islands.

At Yachting.Rent, our fleet encompasses a diverse range of both sailing boats and catamarans, each diligently maintained and equipped with the latest amenities and safety equipment. Our knowledgeable team is ready to assist you in selecting the right vessel for your Australian sailing adventure, ensuring an unforgettable journey. Dive into the beauty of Australian waters with Yachting.Rent, and let’s make your sailing dreams come true.

Yacht Charters Gold Coast

Five-star fun in the sun on australia’s gold coast, best time to visit.

Activities & Experiences

Whether you’re looking for a decadent, luxurious afternoon or a thrill seeking adventure, the Gold Coast has something for you. Invite all your closest friends for a day of exploring, and cap it all off with a gourmet dinner onboard as you’re whisked back to shore.

Before setting sail, consider adding these must-do activities to your schedule:

VISIT THE THEME PARKS

No mention of the Gold Coast would be complete without discussing the theme park options. One of the area's biggest drawcards, families from all over Australia (and the world) travel to Warner Bros Movie World, Sea World, Dreamworld or Wet n’ Wild for a day of heart-pumping fun.

Ride thrilling roller coasters, meet some of your favourite movie characters and spot fun loving dolphins demonstrating natural behaviours. Get in early to beat the queues and don't forget sunscreen!

SEE THE SKYPOINT OBSERVATION DECK

Located in iconic Surfers Paradise, the Q1 building rises 230 metres above sea level, dominating the city skyline. From the top of the building the SkyPoint observation deck provides panoramic views of the stunning Gold Coast. If you’re feeling adventurous, try the SkyPoint Climb. Australia’s highest external climb, this adventure departs from the 77th level of the Q1 building. Participants will be guided to the eagle's nest located 270 metres above the ground below. Enjoy 360° views of the beautiful skyline and toast your success at the 77th floor Bistro+Bar.

DINE AT KIYOMI

Tucked away inside the glittering Star Casino is the mouthwatering Kiyomi japanese restaurant. Visionary Executive Head Chef Chase Kojima has created a delectable menu of authentic Tokyo inspired dishes with a modern twist. Put your trust in the chef by dining on a pre-set menu of small plates including tender Wagyu beef with an eel and kombu jus. Bookings are essential as this is one of the Gold Coast's most talked about establishments.

TAKE TO THE SKIES

If there’s one thing the Gold Coast does best, it’s luxury and excess without apology. What could be more luxurious than taking a private helicopter tour above this golden coastline. We recommend flying to Sirromet Wines, the largest and most awarded wine producer in Queensland.

Have a helicopter drop you right at the cellar door. Customisable tours are also available. If you fly with Gold Coast Helitours, you can even have Michelin star chef Frank Meijer be your pilot for the day as he takes you to a scenic location for a gourmet picnic.

What to expect when booking a yacht charter on the Gold Coast with Ahoy Club

Okay, Broke Backpackers, you’ve convinced me. I’m interested in setting sail on a yacht in Australia. Umm, wait a minute, how do I do that?

We get it, we don’t have a luxury yacht lying around either.

Lucky for you, we’ve got some contacts.

Allow us to introduce you to Sailo.

Sailo is an online platform where you can rent and charter boats of all kinds. It’s been around since 2014 and has been making waves in the boat rental scene ever since.

On Sailo, boat owners can list their own boats for you to rent, either with a captain or bareboat (no captain, just you and your crew). All you do is search for your destination of choice, browse through the available boats and contact the owner if you’re interested! And that’s it! It’s like Airbnb for boats.

You can use filters to narrow the options to the smallest, most budget-friendly options for backpackers or to find the most luxurious party yacht. It’s all there, waiting for you to find it. You can also check out previous customers reviews to make sure the boat your hiring isn’t dodgy.

boatlife-sailo-plug-banner

Umm, did we not mention the world’s largest barrier reef, thriving indigenous sea life, and tropical waters that make the Caribbean look like Putney (no offense, Putney)? Well, allow us to convince you further.

Chartering a yacht is a great way to celebrate something special. Maybe you’ve got a milestone birthday or an anniversary coming up, or maybe you’re just planning the trip of a lifetime after a hard year. Don’t wait for an excuse to live your best life. A yacht charter in Australia, or anywhere in the world for that matter, is an epic, all-inclusive way to make the most of a day on the ocean.

To charter means your hire comes with a captain and crew (and maybe some other fancy features). All the tough work will be done by the crew, so your job, dear friend, is to sit back and enjoy yourself with your nearest and dearest.

If you’re more a hands-on kind of traveller, there are many bareboat options if you’d like to give sailing a go yourself. This means you and your mates are the captain and crew and you do all the organising and navigating yourself. But hold on friends, before you jump aboard a bareboat, remember that you must have a boating license for any boat with an engine over 4.5kw.

While there are bareboat options across Australia, we will be looking at the best yacht charters in the country.

We’ve mentioned already that Australia is not small. It’s also not the cheapest destination to travel to, especially on a yacht. We’re not fools and we know that everyone has different budgets to work with and travel styles to consider.

So, we’ve narrowed down three areas around the country that are great for a yacht charter in Australia, keeping budget and travel preference in mind so there’s something for everyone on our list.

Here’s our list of the nine best yacht charters and tours in Sydney, Queensland and Western Australia.

Sydney Harbour and the coast around the New South Wales capital is a dream for yachting enthusiasts. The harbour is filled with gorgeous, peaceful alcoves and iconic city skylines. It’s definitely one of the best places to visit in Sydney .

And of course, the best place to view those skylines is from your own private yacht in Sydney! Let us show you our favourites.

Best Yacht Charter for Families in Sydney – Moody 54’ Deck Saloon

Moody 54 Deck Saloon

  • 12 passengers
  • Sleeping options available

This Moody 54 foot Deck Saloon is great for a sailing trip if you and your family are in favour of something a bit adventurous. Known as Calypso, she’s crossed the Mediterranean and Atlantic ocean a few times and is no stranger to the waters off the coast of Sydney. You won’t miss out on little luxuries aboard either.

Each of the three guest cabins has access to a bathroom and shower and is fully air-conditioned. If you do opt for an overnight yacht charter, you can comfortably sleep 10 on board.

Maybe something a little more low-key is what you had in mind for your Sydney yacht charter? You better believe it, she can do that too. You’ll love cruising around the harbour on this boat. There’s a big swim platform for dipping in and out of the water, and panoramic views of the water from each of the comfortable lounge areas.

There are also a bunch of safety features on board that offers peace of mind and comfort for everyone, including little ones. Think excellent sun protection and safety rails around the edges. These things are important on a yacht, it can take a while for some people to find their sea-legs!

Over-the-Top Luxurious Yacht Charter in Sydney – Rivera 57’ Yacht

Rivera 57 Yacht

  • 30 passengers
  • Versatile and luxurious

This Rivera 57 foot yacht is not just nice, it’s also super versatile. Whatever adventure you want to create on Sydney Harbour, you can do it on this boat in absolute style.

She can do it all, this one.

The motor yacht has plenty of space to spread out that is suited to all kinds of activities. There are padded sunbeds on the bow of the boat and inside has a living space with open windows to make the most of the waterfront views. Of course, a luxurious yacht charter in Sydney doesn’t come cheap, but up to 30 passengers can enjoy the vibes of yacht life in Sydney harbour on this beauty, and that’s bound to be an experience you remember.

Best Boat Tour in Sydney – Sydney Whale-Watching Cruise

You’ll learn a bunch about Australian marine life from your naturalist guide and a whole lotta info about the biodiversity of the area.

A BBQ lunch or breakfast is included in your experience while you’re in the calm waters of the harbour, and of course, you’ll get epic views of the iconic Sydney Harbour Bridge and Opera House.

There’s always a chance that luck won’t be on your side when you do nature-based tourism. These folk are so confident you’ll see what you came for, they offer guaranteed whale sightings or they will take you out again until you do. They sound like pretty good odds to me!

Best Boat Tour in Perth – Perth River Cruise and Vineyard Experience

We’ve mostly focused on boat and yacht charters in the ocean, but for this recommendation, we suggest you venture inland to the Swan River on a boat cruise. This is an awesome boat tour in Perth if you want to get out on a boat, but are more interested in the activities than the vessel.

The tour is an all-inclusive day-long adventure to the wineries near Perth. You’ll cruise along the Swan River with a knowledgeable guide while stopping at the most excellent wineries in the region. You don’t just get to experience the divine scenery, you’ll also fill your bellies with the best wine and boutique beers in the area. Boat waterfront skyline Australia

  • Go swimming – The beaches down under are the most stunning and pristine in the world. Get your gear off and take a dip! Just make sure to check with your captain whether it’s safe to swim off the yacht first.
  • Get boozy – When you charter a yacht in Australia, or anywhere else for that matter, you don’t need to worry about who will be the designated driver (or “the desso” as the Aussies say). Whether your day on the water is a rowdy one or a chance to unwind, enjoy the opportunity to have a couple of cold ones on deck and take in the fresh sea air.
  • Snorkelling – Australia’s Great Barrier Reef is world-renowned as one of the most spectacular destinations to explore what is under the surface of our ocean. It’s definitely not the only spot with incredible marine life to explore. Bring a snorkel along and marvel at the biodiversity of these parts.
  • Jetski – Sure, cruising on a yacht is a lot of fun, but zooming around on a Jetski takes the fun to another level. Some of the more luxurious yacht charters in Australia include a jetski as a part of the charter package. If yours doesn’t, chat with your captain while you organise your trip, they may have some contacts to organise one for you.
  • Watersports – Ever tried wakeboarding, kneeboarding, waterskiing or tubing? Watersports are up there as the most fun things you can do on a boat. If your vessel of choice has a strong motor, you might be able to do it on your yacht charter.
  • Enjoy the sun – Catch some vitamin D while you’re out on the water. Be sure to protect your skin, we aren’t kidding when we say the sun is strong in Australia. Aussies take their skincare seriously, be sure to wear a hat, sunnies and SPF 50+. Opt for reef-safe sunscreen if you can, if we’re gonna keep enjoying our oceans, we have to protect them!
  • Whale watching – Many kinds of whales, including southern right, dwarf minke, humpback and orcas, make their annual migration along Australia’s coasts during the cooler months. This phenomenon happens on the East, West and Southern coasts of the country roughly between May-November. If your visit lines up with this time, don’t miss the chance to see these magnificent beasts and their young.
  • Watch the sunset . There’s nothing quite like watching the sunset from your own private yacht charter. No matter where you charter a yacht in Australia, you’re in for a show.

You came for the top yacht charters in Australia, and these are our top picks for Sydney, Brisbane, the Goldcoast and Western Australia.

Australia is big – and there are plenty of other epic locations around the giant island where you can hire and charter a yacht.

If you didn’t find what you need here, you can head to Sailo and search specific destinations around the country and browse until you find the perfect vessel to suit you and your adventure. If somewhere else in the world is calling your name, you’ll find boats on Sailo all over our pretty planet.

Maybe a DIY Sailing trip is more up your alley than a yacht charter, and if so, be sure to check out the bareboat yacht rentals available, too. Renting rather than chartering tends to be a whole lot cheaper, and we know you folk like to save cash where you can. If it’s your first time renting a bareboat, check out our guide on life on a boat to learn more about what to expect.

In the meantime, we will be planning our yachting adventure in ‘Straya.

Screen Rant

10 below deck charter guests who will never return to the franchise.

While the charter guests who appear on Below Deck have a great time while filming the show, many aren't invited back for a number of reasons.

  • Some charter guests on Below Deck have caused unnecessary drama and won't likely return due to bad behavior.
  • Captain Glenn Shephard from Below Deck Sailing Yacht faced backlash from Barrie, who called him two-faced.
  • Former guest Dr. Francis Martinis will not return to Below Deck after he was arrested for faking prescriptions.

The Below Deck franchise has featured many charter guests since 2013, many of whom will never return . The Bravo series focuses on expensive charters with wealthy guests who have attitude problems and over-the-top demands. That includes Charter guest Alexis Bellino, who boarded Captain Lee Rosbach’s yacht with her boyfriend at the time, Andy Bohn. She was disrespectful and made everyone uncomfortable with her and Andy's PDA. She even insulted crew members after featuring on the show.

Like Alexis, Delores Flora from Below Deck season 8 was a terrible guest. Not only did she misbehave, but she also got drunk and s wam while intoxicated, which is not only not allowed, it frightened the crew members. Delores got kicked out of the yacht the next day. These guests created unnecessary drama on the boat and will likely never return like a few others from the franchise.

20 Best Reality TV Shows Right Now

8 barrie & tony, below deck sailing yacht.

Barrie and Tony Drewitt Barlow had a decent time in the Below Deck Sailing Yacht seasons 2 and 3. Despite that, they left with a bitter taste because of Captain Glenn Shephard. In 2021, Barrie participated in a podcast, Pita Party: The Podcast , where he claimed that Captain Glenn bothered him while using his phone .

Barrie said, “he (Captain Glenn) was a two-face b*stard,” adding that he just didn’t like his presence.

7 Frank Fay

Below deck mediterranean.

In Below Deck Mediterranean season 7, Charter guest Frank Fay had a thing for second stew Kyle Viljoen. He pursued him on the yacht, but unfortunately, their relationship didn’t last. Frank will likely never return to the series as long as Captain Sandy Yawn allows Kyle to work for her. Even if Kyle quits, Frank wouldn’t want to be in an environment that would remind him of his failed relationship.

6 Erica Rose

Erica Rose appeared on Below Deck Sailing Yacht two seasons in a row. Erica was highly offensive toward the crew member, as well as her husband, Charles Sanders, and to make things worse, she left the crew with a measly tip , leading fans to slam her on social media. Ultimately, Erica had to apologize for her bad attitude but never returned to give the crew the tip they deserved. Nobody on Below Deck Sailing Yacht would ever want to return.

5 Justin Guarini

Justin Guarini’s time on Below Deck Sailing Yacht was not dramatic at all; however, he’ll probably never return to the series. Justin wouldn’t return because he wasn't the primary guest. He joined his friend, Kim, who wanted to enjoy a luxury yacht trip. It was more of a one-and-done deal. Secondly, nobody recognized him at all. Viewers later realized who he was and how he was the runner-up on American Idol season 1. Justin is a theatre artist and has made a name for himself. However, it was embarrassing that so many fans had no clue who he was .

Below Deck: 8 Charter Guests With The Worst Attitudes

4 johnny damon.

Johnny Damon’s time at Below Deck Med was full of explosive moments. Once, he sent the food back, citing that the experience wasn’t “five stars.” On another occasion, his wife, Michelle, created drama by yelling at the owner of another yacht . Overall, the experience was simply terrible on both sides. Crew members didn’t love Johnny and his wife, and the couple didn’t respect the crew members. It is unlikely that Captain Sandy would want to host the couple again as long as she’s in charge.

3 Krystal Murphy

Former charter guest Krystal Murphy boarded Captain Lee’s yacht with her friends. She immediately began showing red flags, drinking, and just being a menace. Krystal fought with her friend, Chelsea, creating unnecessary drama. She even passed out and punched a friend in the face. Former Chief Stew Kate Chastain disliked serving Krystal and called her a “spoiled brat;” she wanted to throw her off the yacht. Nowadays, Krystal has seemingly become a more private person. It doesn’t seem like Krystal would want to be on TV again.

2 Steve Bradley

Below Deck fans should remember Steve Bradley as he made many appearances on the show. In Below Deck season 3, he wanted a foam party and demanded the crew to figure it out and follow his commands, acting like a king. In Below Deck season 6, Steve made more outrageous requests. Apart from being a wild guest, Steve was entitled and acted inappropriately at times . No Below Deck captain would want to host him again as he didn't come off as very likable.

1 Dr. Francis Martinis

Below deck mediterranean & below deck sailing yacht.

Dr. Francis Martinis from Below Deck Med and Below Deck Sailing Yacht has a zero chance of returning. While the former charter guest didn’t have too many issues on the show, his personal life issues will stop him from appearing on Bravo again. According to TMZ , Dr. Francis and his wife, Jessica, were arrested for filling out fake prescriptions in December 2023 . The couple used the names of Below Deck stars and got caught red-handed. The Below Deck franchise would never want to welcome felons, especially when their mugshots are all over the internet.

Below Deck airs Mondays at 9 p.m. EDT on Bravo.

Below Deck is a popular reality TV franchise that focuses on a group of crew members as they work on luxurious yachts and cater to their client's needs. After the original series proved to be a success, Bravo developed a handful of spinoff shows including Below Deck Selling Yacht, Below Deck Adventure, Below Deck Down Under, and Below Deck Mediterranean.

Private jet and yachts seized as three arrested in £76m luxury care homes raid

Three people have been arrested as part of a sting by the Serious Fraud Office into property developer the Carlauren Group.

A private jet and two yachts have been seized, as three people have been arrested, in a £76m raid on a group who ran luxury care homes.

Two sites were raided across St Leonard's, Dorset, and Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, as part of the Serious Fraud Office (SFO) probe, supported by the National Crime Agency (NCA).

The investigation is looking into the UK registered property developer, the Carlauren Group, which collapsed into administration in November 2019.

When it folded, the SFO said that it led to some elderly residents being forced to move out, and left 600 investors out of pocket.

The Carlauren Group bought 23 properties across the UK, often former hotels including the historic Windlestone Hall in Durham, and allegedly claimed to offer annual 10 per cent returns to investors as it sought to turn the buildings into high-end care homes.

The SFO raided two sites today

However, the SFO said only nine of these became operational and some continued as hotels instead of care homes.

Alongside that, the group allegedly purchased a number of supercars, including two Lamborghinis and a McLaren 570GT, a private jet and two yachts.

Nick Ephgrave QPM, director of the Serious Fraud Office, said: "This company's abrupt collapse has created turmoil and enormous anxiety for many, with elderly people forced to vacate their homes and investors left with nothing.

"Today's arrests are a major development in our investigation and a step towards getting the answers so many people need."

The group was said to have had 600 people and companies invest in the scheme through the purchase of rooms that were to be rented out to the elderly.

This was inside luxury facilities that boasted of swimming pools, room service and other amenities.

According to the SFO, the rooms were advertised and sold with a guaranteed annual payout and opportunity to sell the asset back for a profit after 10 years

‘Below Deck’ Sails Into a New Era

With a different captain at the helm and new production elements, the reality show about charter yachts is switching up its style.

A man in a crew member suit stands behind a bar and tends to flowers in a vase.

By Shivani Gonzalez

Starting a new season of “ Below Deck ” can be similar to returning to summer camp as a kid — you know it’s going to be fun and that you’ll be in the same environment, but some of the people will be different and you’re not quite sure what the vibes will be.

This time around, in particular, feels that way because for the first time in the show’s 11-season run, Captain Lee Rosbach is no longer at the helm. It’s a pivotal moment for a franchise that has become one of the most popular entities in the sprawling universe of reality TV since premiering on Bravo in 2013 . The show’s appeal was built on endless romances between various crew members (“boatmances,” as they came to be known), horrible charter guests and some sort of passive-aggressive fight about how many shackles of the anchor chain should be in the water. And there was always Rosbach presiding over the drama as he trudged around the boat, reeling off one liners like “I’m madder than a pissed-on chicken” and “we screwed the pooch so many times we should have a litter of puppies running around.”

At the center of the show now is Kerry Titheradge (the stern yet goofy captain of “Below Deck Adventure” fame), who is managing the Motor Yacht Saint David with the cheeky chief stew Fraser Olender by his side.

With that change in captain, the energy on the boat — both onscreen and off — is different, according to Olender.

“I feel like Kerry this season, as opposed to Lee, has a no B.S. attitude, which I love with him,” Olender said in an interview. “With Kerry, he taught me a lot and sort of forced to me confront issues directly with my team, work them out, as opposed to making executive decisions too soon.”

This shift in management style changes the central conflict — whereas the drama once focused on the captain swiftly kicking out any unpleasant crew member (as we might have seen with Rosbach), the drama now focuses on the whole crew trying to get along (since Titheradge gives people those second chances).

Additionally, Olender noted that the captain’s relationship with the crew can also affect the drama on board.

“Captains absolutely do get involved, whether they know it or not,” Olender said, adding that for the crew, everything is about “trying to impress your captain.”

This phenomenon plays out early in the new season when the lead deckhand, Ben Willoughby, called out a fellow crew member over the radios about not wearing a life vest — something he easily could have done in private. The drama that followed became an interpersonal conflict between the two of them, both with the ultimate goal of impressing Titheradge. (Of course, the two deckhands had kissed on the previous crew night out, which is more in line with the “Below Deck” drama viewers are used to.)

For “Below Deck” showrunners, the changeovers in the cast allowed them to rethink what the show would look like.

From the season premiere, it was immediately apparent that Rosbach’s absence wasn’t the only change this season: The filming is sleeker, the daily, multicourse meals prepared by the chef are given their own glamour shots and the cameras sometimes cut to the perspectives of yachties running around on deck and through the galley.

“Our showrunner, Lauren Simms, is an avid consumer of all different kinds of media,” Noah Samton, a senior vice president of unscripted current production for NBCUniversal, said in an interview. “She pitches us different ideas on how to stylistically evoke different feelings and change the mood a little bit of ‘Below Deck’ without removing what really works.”

Moving through the rest of the season, and potentially through seasons to come, Olender is aiming to bring a cutthroat management style while also bringing affection for his stews, all with his signature British humor.

On Bravo’s side, there are changes in the works for the other “Below Deck” spinoffs — including “Sailing Yacht,” “Mediterranean” and “Down Under” — which collectively, have 26 seasons. Specifically, Samton said that “Down Under” is currently filming and that even though fans should be ready to see new things, the show will stay true to its original concept.

“These are real yachties doing a real job so you have to stay within those confines because the audience isn’t going to want anything that is too produced or fake,” Samton said. “So we have to find ways to reinvent while staying true to the original concept of the show.”

And as Olender said: “I’m sure that every year if I were to work with this franchise again, that I’ll be thrown a collection of total chaotic and disastrous stews — that’s what makes it watchable.”

‘Fancy cars and flashy yachts’: criminals living the high life targeted by Victoria’s unexplained wealth laws

Police minister says those who ‘swan around with ill-gotten gains’ will be pursued in reforms that flip onus of proof

  • Get our morning and afternoon news emails , free app or daily news podcast

Organised crime figures who splash out on yachts, penthouse suites and sex workers will be targeted by the Victorian government, under new laws that will force them to repay any wealth they cannot prove was lawfully acquired.

The state’s attorney general, Jaclyn Symes, and police minister, Anthony Carbines, on Tuesday announced they will introduce the Confiscation Amendment (Unexplained Wealth) Bill to parliament, in an effort to deprive criminals of the “use and enjoyment of their unexplained wealth”.

Symes said the new laws would flip the onus from police and prosecutors – who currently have to prove a direct link between a criminal and their wealth – to the offender.

“The barrier has been is that we’ve had to demonstrate that [wealth] is connected to criminal activity. The onus now will be flipped under this legislation, you will have to demonstrate that you obtained it by legal means,” she said.

“It’s very likely unless they won Tattslotto and they can show their winning ticket. They probably were doing illegal activities to obtain their wealth.”

Victoria’s attorney general Jaclyn Symes announced the reforms on Tuesday.

Carbines said the changes will also capture assets bought in a partner or relative’s name as well as gifts, “consumable wealth and wealth that has been gifted, disposed of or expended”.

“If you want to swan around with ill-gotten gains and wealth that doesn’t belong to you, that you’ve accrued illegally, police will be able to pursue you. They’ll be able to pursue your family and your partners,” he said.

“If organised crime bosses think that they can have the fancy cars, flashy yachts, spend their money on hotels and strippers, if you draw your attention to yourself, Victoria police will be after you.

“They will be able to use these laws to crack out and reclaim the stolen wealth that ill gotten gains, and it’s about continuing to make sure we put the pressure on organised crime.”

The new laws will allow the Director of Public Prosecutions to apply to a court for an order if there are reasonable grounds to suspect that a person’s total wealth exceeds their lawfully acquired wealth by at least $200,000.

If a person can’t satisfy a court that they have lawfully obtained their wealth, a court may order them to pay the state the value of anything they cannot prove was lawfully acquired.

The laws have been modelled on those currently in place in Western Australian, but are also similar to New South Wales’ laws, which were also bolstered in 2023 to allow police to seize and freeze wealth and assets without a specific offence.

The opposition leader, John Pesutto, questioned why it had taken so long for the government to introduce the legislation, though he said he supported the concept in principal.

“Frankly, after 10 years, you have to ask, what is it actually doing to crack down on organised crime?” he said.

An abandoned, burned boat and 2 missing men: South African authorities investigate maritime mystery

CAPE TOWN, South Africa — South African authorities searching for a missing charter boat captain are concerned about possible foul play after they discovered his vessel burned and abandoned on a beach in neighboring Mozambique, but no sign of him or the unknown man who hired him.

The National Sea Rescue Institute raised the alarm over captain John Matambu and his passenger after they didn’t return to Sodwana Bay on South Africa’s northeastern coast on Saturday evening having gone out early that morning.

The charred wreck of Matambu’s speed boat, Magnum Too, was discovered by a search plane on Sunday in the Dobela area of Mozambique, some 170 kilometers (105 miles) up the coast.

“Both men remain missing in unknown circumstances,” the National Sea Rescue Institute said.

Matambu’s cousin told local media that a petrol canister and a medical kit were found near the boat.

The NSRI said some of the circumstances “appear to indicate that foul play may be involved.”

The man who hired Matambu to take him out on the 21-foot (6.4-meter) boat apparently gave false contact details, NSRI spokesperson Craig Lambinon said. The booking was made for a man, his wife and a child, but only the man boarded the boat, Lambinon said.

“Hopes are that this has all been a misunderstanding, and foul play was not involved, but at this stage all possibilities are being examined,” Lambinon told national broadcaster SABC. “The fact that the boat has been found across the border is obviously the difficulty now.”

The NSRI received a report that the boat was spotted at 10 p.m. Saturday night heading north toward Mozambican waters, it said, the last sighting before its charred hull was discovered the following day.

The Police Sea Borderline Control agency and the Police Search and Rescue unit are also involved in the search. Authorities described Matambu as a well-known, experienced and respected boat captain in Sodwana Bay.
