James Bond - Disco Volante, Emilio Largo's hydrofoil yacht

Thunderball, the fourth opus in the James Bond series, is an opportunity to discover a yacht less ordinary than one might think at first glance: Disco Volante!
It is in the Bahamas, in Nassau, that we discover Disco Volante, the personal yacht of Emilio Largo, a billionaire as flamboyant as he is ruthless, anchored off the coast of his superb seaside villa, Palmyra.
Number 2 of the criminal organization Spectre, headed by Ernst Stavro Blofeld, Emilio Largo is the president of a Paris-based charity, the International Center for Assistance to Displaced Persons.
Within Spectre, Emilio Largo is in charge of Extortion and responsible for the NATO Project, which consists in stealing 2 nuclear bombs from the latter, in exchange for £100 million!
At the heart of this scheme is Disco Volante, a yacht whose objective is not to entertain its rich owner for sea trips between the Bahamas and Florida, but to work underhand... to transport the said atomic bombs.
Its entrails conceal a diving lock, housing an underwater transport vehicle, essential to go and store nuclear weapons in an underwater cave, before positioning one off the coast of Miami!
However, the main characteristic of Disco Volante does not lie in this dive chamber, but in its very concept: built in Sicily, at the Rodriquez Cantieri Messina shipyard, Disco Volante is in fact a hydrofoil motoryacht, made up of two detachable parts, the catamaran stern - the 15 m long cocoon - housing the flybridge, which can be clipped onto the forward drive section.
This front part (20.75m long) is in fact a Rodriquez PT20, the very first production hydrofoil boat, built in 1957, and which will be transformed for production needs in Puerto Rico, after an investment of nearly 500,000 dollars.
A pioneer, the Rodriquez PT 20 will be the very first commercial hydrofoil boat to be put into service on a regular service, Messina, Reggio Calabria operated by SNAV (Società Navigazione Alta Velocità ). With its 1350hp V12, its capacity to carry 72 passengers, the Rodriquez PT 20 flew at 37 knots, in the greatest comfort (for 50 knots in the novel and 20 knots in the movie, a fake beard from Largo to Bond, to hide the true nature of his yacht!)

This spectacular yacht is owned by SPECTRE and is used by Emilio Largo, SPECTRE's no 2, as part of his disguise and to transport the stolen atomic bombs. When attacked by US Navy vessels, the yacht parts in two. After separation the cocoon then revealed its secondary function as a weapon platform and armour-plated battlestation. Equipped with an anti-aircraft cannon and machineguns it tried to cover the escape of the hydrofoil.
The PT 20 hydrofoil is the worlds first ever commercial hydrofoil, and went into regular passenger service in 1956. It was first used on the route Messina - Reggio Calabria, and the route was driven by the company Società Aliscafi partly owned by Rodriquez. The type PT 20 stands for "pesa tonnellate 20" - i.e. weighing twenty tonnes. Similar models has been build on license by yards in Japan and Norway.
Rodriquez has build a total of 46 PT 20's in the period 1956 to 1971. The hydrofoilsystem used for the PT 20 is licenced from the Swiss company Supramar.
The boat used in 'Thunderball' is the second hydrofoil build by Rodriquez and its original name is 'Flying Fish'. It was modified by 3M Shipyard in Miami Yard and equipped with a 50 ft cocoon, a katamaran, which could be separated from the hydrofoil. The boat costed $10.000, but the total including the cocoon and modifications was arround $500.000. Several large scale models was build for filming.
For the final blow-up of Disco Volante, experimental rocket fuel was used as main explosives. The explosion was so powerfull that it broke windows in Nassau's Bay Street 30 miles away, and sent the boat skyhigh.
The Three Disco's
For the filming three different boats were used. The hydrofoil 'Flying Fish' got the most screen time. An unidentified boat is only seen in a very very short clip before it is blown up. And the third Disco, a yacht 'Natoya' is seen in distance in short scenes.
It was during extraction of new pictures we suddenly discovered the long sleek yacht posing as 'Disco Volante' in some of the scenes. We call her the 'Third Disco', but in fact her name was 'Nataya'. Unfortunately she does not exist any more, but ended her days as a reef.
She was one of six Cruisemaster yachts build by Defoe Shipyard in 1947/8 and sailed the Great Lakes for about 20 years. Her owner was Harold DuCharme of Grosse Pte. MI. She was sold and sailed to Florida in the 1960's. The Cruisemasters were equipped with four General Motors 6-71N Diesels, mounted 2 in-line on a side. Length: 36m (188'). Beam: 5,64m (18'6").
Searching for the hydrofoil
We have tried to track the current location of the 'Flying Fish' and the cocoon. But our conclusion of all the information we have gathered is the boat has been scrapped somewhere in the 80's. During our search we got a lot of interesting stories and sightings. And we would like to thank you all very much for sharing your information with us. The following is the information we gathered.
The cocoon was used a houseboat in Griffin Mariner, Daina Florida, and was sold in 1974 by Gary W. to Marvin Taylor. Thanks to Gary W. for contacting us. In 1974-76 it was moored on the south side of the Miami River near 36 Street still being used as a houseboat according to Jorge.
The hydrofoil was sold after the filming as stated in an advertise in Miami Herald (see the advertise at the website of International Hydrofoil Society ). An observation in the early 1980's. It was resting for years next to the Chalk's Ocean Airways airbridge facility on Watson island in Miami Florida--between the Miami seaport and South Beach.
A confirmation names Watson Island as the location. 1983: Spottet on blocks at the Port Everglades container storage area in Fort Lauderdale. Condition was very poor, it might be bound for the scrap yard. The International Hydrofoil Society has no trace of her. And neither has Rodriques. A sistership is located somewhere in the Philipines.

I'll get the ball rolling here with an easy one: Never Say Never Again , 1983 (adaptation of Thunderball) the Disco Volante was renamed The Flying Saucer, (its English translation), and owned by Maximillian Largo. In real life, the 282-foot yacht that was used in long shots for the film was known as the Nabila and was built for Saudi wheeler/dealer Adnan Khashoggi. The yacht was later sold to American wheeler/dealer Donald Trump, who renamed it Trump Princess. Later Trump sold it to Prince Alwaleed bin Talal bin Abdul Aziz al Saud, who christened it the Kingdom 5KR. 1980 Benetti FB116
Tomorrow Never Dies 1997 - Media Villain, Elliot Carver was quite ability armed with the "Sea Shadow" In real life, she was revealed to the public in 1993, Sea Shadow (IX-529) is an experimental stealth ship built by Lockheed for the United States Navy to determine how a low radar profile might be achieved. She was housed at the San Diego Naval Station until September 2006, when the vessel was relocated with the HMB-1 to the Suisun Bay Reserve Fleet in Benicia, CA. The vessels are available for donation to a maritime museum. Length: 164 ft (50 m) Beam: 68 ft (21 m) Draft: 15 ft (4.6 m) Displacement: 563 long tons (572 t) Propulsion: Diesel-electric Speed: 28 knots (52 km/h; 32 mph) Sea Shadow has only 12 bunks aboard, one small microwave oven, a refrigerator and table. She was never intended to be mission capable and was never commissioned, although she is listed in the Naval Vessel Register.

That Sea Shadow thing was just beautiful. While googling it, I also came across another X-ship that was looking like a giant tarantula and has two flexible rubber hulls "to contour waves". Wonder if anything "mission-capable" ever came out of those projects.

I can not give an exact date; Trump Princess spent one night on a barge ball in Jacksonville fl approx '89/90. There was a stir on the radio with the StJohns Pilots. Because of her draft a pilot was required. The T P argued it a while on the open radio and lost. While on the Ball, across from the ole Gator Bowl stadium, I circled her a few times on my boat late that night. Every circle around her, more security people came on deck and followed us around. Draft dictates the rule. Not sure of the number; any draft more than 8 feet must have a pilot for Jax/Port - StJohns river. It's a close band of pilots here in Jax. An outsider may never work here. But once in a while you do hear of a boo boo.

Beautiful and unique Gentleman's Yacht, built in 1981 by the Italian shipyard Cantieri di Lavagna and refurbished extensively in 2014 and over 1 ml EUR refit during 2022-2024, the 36m superyacht DISCO VOLANTE is looking for a new owner.
She went through an extensive refit at Codecasa Shipyard in 2014. All external and internal spaces were completely rebuilt.
Last huge refit 2022 - 2024 performed in Castellamare di Stabia shipyard, and it included 25 linear meters of hull wooden planks substitution, new anodes and antifouling, new polish of hull, deck and superstructure, teak sanding and polish, engines, generators, all systems fully serviced, revised and renewed, new water tanks, fresh fabrics, new batteries, new TV fly structure and lift on the fly bridge, continuous improvements, etc.
N. 4 new chaise lounges on fly, new sun umbrellas, new AV system, new navigation system including fly bridge.
Better than new!
All year permanent professional crew on board.
