Hawk Yachts Ranger Expedition Yacht

Hawk Yachts , which builds expedition yachts for comfortable cruising in the most extreme conditions, announced a new 223-foot concept that the company says will be a game changer in both design and cost of ownership.

The new Hawk Ranger has six staterooms, including a large owner’s suite and five guest cabins, with a range of 6,500 nautical miles at 12 knots. Its top speed is 17 knots.

Being able to cross the Atlantic and back again without refueling will be just one of the new Ranger’s standout features. Captain Matthias Bosse, CEO and cofounder, designed the Hawk series for serious expeditions rather than as just another faux tough-guy explorer moored in the Med all summer.

Beyond the distinctive, hawk-like bill at the front of the yacht (designed for penetrating ice fields), the Ranger will have a Polar Class 6 hull to break through 32 inches of ice, a reinforced ice belt along the waterline, a large boiler to keep the yacht warm in cold environments, heated seals on the exterior doors so they will not freeze over, large “expedition” side gates, and other features for journeying into the frozen wilds.

For visiting remote, tropical locations, the Ranger has standard tropical air conditioning, insect and pollen filters integrated into the air intakes, high-temperature engine cooling, and a system for freshwater production so it can stay in the wild for weeks at a time.

These advanced systems for extreme conditions are just one component of the new yacht. Bosse says the company’s business model will “drastically reduce” the costs of ownership because it builds its yachts in other commercial shipyards. The explorer design will also attract charter guests who want to see the world’s most remote destinations.

“From Antarctica to indigenous villages in the Amazon rainforest, our yachts are opening up a world of adventure to discerning people who want unique experiences and utmost luxury,” said Bosse, noting the Hawk Ranger can be used 52 weeks per year, mainly for charter, as opposed to the typical five to six weeks that most owners use their yachts.

“This allows owners to run the yacht as a profitable business,” Bosse added. “The super-rich are no longer content to own trophy vessels that sit in harbor for 45 weeks. We’re seeing a desire to live and breathe experiences that are only accessible to a select few.”

What is the ultimate reason to own a yacht? The freedom to explore the world in total luxury.

Matthias Bosse – Project founder and Master Mariner

Some of the most beautiful and remote locations in the world are out of reach, even for most explorer yachts.

We are designing yachts that we believe are more capable than any yacht ever built, that are able to travel to the most challenging environments on Earth. Yachts that can truly get in and amongst the most spectacular locations in the world in super-yacht levels of comfort.

SUPERYACHTS THAT CAN GO ANYWHERE

Building a yacht which can truly explore means designing it to be capable in the two most extreme environments, the Polar Regions and the Amazon.

The opposite extreme to the Polar Regions is the Amazon River. It presents several challenges, such as hot and silty water, high temperatures and humidity.

A true expedition yacht that can cope with both of these environments can sail almost anywhere in the world.

The Polar Regions are some of the most isolated and magnificent environments on the planet. To really access these regions you have to be able to enter the ice, which is why Hawk yachts are designed to meet Polar Class 6 standards.

Whether entertaining in a marina or relaxing in a secluded location, our yachts are luxurious in every climate.

Our designers have come up with concepts to entertain and delight guests, but ultimately we work alongside the owners to create a bespoke interior.

Wide beams allow for extensive possibilities for interior layouts on board, such as a large spa and open galley.

No expedition is complete without stunning views. Our yachts are designed to allow you to see the world from the ideal vantage point.

Yacht expedition is not about going rough, it's about access to the memorable exclusivity of unspoilt nature in comfort, safety and style.

BUILT FROM THE OCEAN UP

The innovative Hawk Bow shape seamlessly combines beauty and functionality.

The innovative Hawk Bow shape seamlessly combines beauty and functionality. It encloses the forecastle, protecting systems that can get damaged or worn in heavy seas, it is effectively 1.5 decks higher presenting a higher gunwale, and its shape dissipates the energy from waves breaking on it rather than scooping the water as happens with a traditional bow shape.

The hull is designed for smooth and economic sailing in a large range of conditions, with large bilge keels and retractable fin stabilisers for efficient and steady sailing, and an ice friendly shape, so it can push through up to 80cm of ice.

Range and Cruising

With a 12,000nm range, our yachts are designed for long haul expeditions and extensive exploration.

With a 12,000nm range, our yachts are designed for long haul expeditions and extensive exploration. Maintenance friendly and with generous storage facilities, they can be taken to sea for over 3 months. The yachts are designed to maintain safe operation in remote locations with redundant systems where possible, including propulsion and manoeuvring to enable the yachts to continue out of remote areas towards ports where shore-side assistance is more practical.

Ecological Areas

Some of the most beautiful locations on earth are protected by ecological restrictions.

Some of the most beautiful locations on earth are protected by ecological restrictions. We have designed our yachts to travel through these areas with minimal environmental impact. Using the yachts hybrid Diesel-Electric propulsion system, the yachts can sail in a low-impact and efficient mode that uses the generators alone to sail quietly and without vibrations at speeds of up to 12kn. Additionally, on board incinerators for burning waste and sludge, biological sewage treatment, metal shredders for storage, cooled waste storage and sophisticated grey water treatment facilities also minimise the effect of ocean waste.

You need an extraordinary boat to be able to get to places where others cannot go.

50 Years of Family Memories Aboard ‘Blackhawk’

  • By Kristin Baird Rattini
  • Updated: August 27, 2021

123-foot Feadship Blackhawk

Before Arthur Wirtz died in 1983, the owner of the Chicago Blackhawks and founder of the Wirtz Corporation made his final wishes clear to his family: Don’t sell Ivanhoe Farm, the family’s original land grant in Mundelein, Illinois, dating back to 1857. Don’t sell his wife’s 1961 Rolls-Royce. And don’t sell the boat.

The boat is Blackhawk , a 123-foot Feadship launched in 1971. It was Arthur’s pride and joy.

“He literally designed every inch of that boat, including the hull,” says William Rockwell “Rocky” Wirtz, Arthur’s grandson and president of the Wirtz Corporation. Fifty years later, the family has gone to great lengths to keep Blackhawk in pristine condition and preserve it as Arthur concieved it, to provide a comfortable and consistent setting as five generations have made lasting memories on board.

123-foot Feadship Blackhawk

Rocky was a teenager when his grandfather was building Blackhawk . “If you happened to be in his office around 5:30 p.m. or 6 p.m., then you would stay there until 9 p.m. or 10 p.m. because he would clear everything off his desk and take the plans out,” he recalls.

His grandfather was upgrading from a 94-foot sport-fisherman, and Arthur envisioned his Feadship as the ultimate luxury fishing yacht with a cockpit and flybridge, despite the fact that Feadship’s naval architects said it wasn’t possible. “They’d tell him what he couldn’t do, and he’d say, ‘No, I can do it,’” Rocky says.

It wasn’t Arthur but Rocky who had the privilege of taking Blackhawk’s maiden voyage. “I had just graduated from high school,” Rocky says, “and my parents brought all five of us kids over to Europe. We met the boat in Lisbon and sailed around the Mediterranean.”

Arthur and Virginia Wirtz

Departing from Portugal, they visited Cannes, France, and Gibraltar, among other ports of call, before disembarking in Portofino, Italy, where Arthur and his wife, Virginia, arrived for their inaugural sailing. They cruised the Mediterranean before a captain handled the Atlantic crossing, via the Azores and Bermuda. Finally, Blackhawk arrived in South Florida, which has been the boat’s home port ever since.

It takes tremendous time, effort and expense to keep a 50-year-old yacht as close to original as possible. “With a newer boat, once you’re up and running, you’re mostly just provisioning for the next trip,” Capt. Richard Freeberg says. “But we are perpetually going from shipyard mode to guest mode.”

At Bradford Marine in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Freeberg and crew varnish the original teak interiors and fair one section of the hull at a time. When they replaced the cockpit electronics, they hid the new instrumentation behind the original control panel and restored the original woodwork and wheel. When they renovated the galley with a Lang range and two MiraCool refrigerators, the crew tracked down the same delft pattern of hand-painted backsplash kitchen tiles from Royal Tichelaar Makkum that had been installed 50 years earlier.

Rocky Wirtz

“It has to be in mint condition—or not at all,” Rocky says. “With all of the improvements we’ve done over the years, the boat is really in better shape now than the day it was launched.”

The living spaces remain largely as Arthur envisioned them. The Sherle Wagner sea-serpent fixtures he chose are still in the four stateroom heads. The floral works by French artist Michel-Henry he selected still adorn the stateroom walls.

“It’s like walking into my great-grandparents’ living room when you walk on the boat,” says Danny, Rocky’s son, the current CEO of the Chicago Blackhawks and part of the fourth generation on board. “There have been plenty of updates, but it still very much feels like their taste and aesthetic across the board.”

Blackhawk Feadship interior

Over the years, many Wirtz family members and friends have flown to South Florida around Easter and Christmas to cruise there and in the Bahamas. Bill Wirtz, Rocky’s father, used to take charge of the itinerary, which often revolved around excursions in Power Play and Slap Shot, two 21-foot Boston Whaler Outrages built in 1971.

“We would end up on some wild adventure that could involve going through some major storm, getting lost, getting stranded or having the engine go out,” Danny says. “But that was the nature of my grandpa [Bill]; he was as stubborn as he was adventurous. We’d go find a hidden beach and explore a new area. We’d come back sandy, sun-drenched and salty.”

The evening’s entertainment was often predicated on whether the Blackhawks were playing.

“We would move hell and high water to catch the game,” Danny says. “In the late ‘80s and early ‘90s, it was much harder to get satellite access to a hockey game at sea or in the Bahamas, so it was kind of this comical attempt to get the satellite to work. But when you got that game, we loved it. Everyone huddled around. If the game was during dinnertime, I would watch it and then run into the dining room to tell the adults if the score changed.”

123-foot Feadship Blackhawk

Nowadays, Danny is among the adults in the Blackhawk dining room. For his 40th birthday in 2017, he brought his daughters, Juniper and Rosemary, for their first cruise. They were 6 and 7—about same age that Danny was when he first stepped on board.

“They were running all around, checking things out, claiming a room and having the best time with the crew,” he says. “It was great to see their exuberance.

“It’s a tremendous privilege to share this boat with them,” he adds. “It’s such a special thing that is so connected to my childhood. Now they get to experience it their own way.”

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

hawk yacht

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

hawk yacht

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

hawk yacht

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

hawk yacht

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

hawk yacht

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

hawk yacht

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

hawk yacht

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.

VESSEL REVIEW | Sinichka – Electric commuter boats designed for Russia’s Moskva River

hawk yacht

A series of three new electric monohull commuter ferries have already begun operational sailings on the Moskva River in the Russian capital Moscow.

Built by Russian shipyard Emperium, sister vessels Sinichka , Filka , and Presnya – all named after rivers in Moscow – are being operated by the Moscow Department of Transport and Road Infrastructure Development (Moscow Deptrans). They are the first units of a planned fleet of 20 vessels that will serve the capital city and other nearby communities. The new ferry system will be the water transport system to be operated on the Moskva River in 16 years.

Each vessel has a welded aluminium hull, an LOA of 21 metres, a beam of 6.2 metres, a draught of only 1.4 metres, a displacement of 40 tonnes, and capacity for 80 passengers plus two crewmembers. Seating is available for 42 passengers on each ferry, and the main cabins are also fitted with USB charging ports, wifi connectivity, tables, toilets, and space for bicycles and scooters. The cabin layout can be rearranged to allow the operator to adjust the distances between the seats and to install armrests of varying widths.

An open upper deck is also accessible to passengers and is the only area on each ferry where smoking is allowed.

The ferries are all of modular construction with each ferry’s wheelhouse, main cabin, and other structural elements being built as complete, separate components. This enables the ferries to be easily dismantled for transport to anywhere in Russia by rail and then quickly re-assembled within seven days.

The ferries are also ice-capable. Recently completed operational trials on the Moskva showed that the vessels can also easily navigate under mild winter conditions with broken surface ice, though year-round operations are planned for the entire fleet.

The ferries are each fitted with 500kWh lithium iron phosphate battery packs that supply power to two 134kW motors. This configuration can deliver a maximum speed of 11.8 knots, a cruising speed of just under 10 knots, and a range of 150 kilometres.

Emperium said the transfer of rotation of electric motors to the propeller is carried out by direct drive. As a propulsion installation, a pulling rotary propeller-steering column with double screws is used. The installation of double pulling screws, with similar power, allows an operator to increase the efficiency of the propulsion system to deliver a slightly higher speed or to reduce energy consumption. This arrangement also provides the ferries with enhanced manoeuvrability necessary for navigating in close quarters.

The batteries themselves have projected service lives of 10 to 12 years and are fitted with safety features such as built-in fire extinguishers and gas vents. Quick-disconnect features allow the batteries to be easily removed for replacement or maintenance.

Some of our readers have expressed disquiet at our publication of reviews and articles describing new vessels from Russia. We at Baird Maritime can understand and sympathise with those views. However, despite the behaviour of the country’s leaders, we believe that the maritime world needs to learn of the latest developments in vessel design and construction there.

Haitian migrant boat with guns, drugs intercepted in Florida: What we know

hawk yacht

Over two dozen people this past month were discovered by Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officers being smuggled into Florida, according to FWC reports. Included in the group were unaccompanied children and armed smugglers attempting to make their way into Sebastian Inlet on Feb. 29, FWC said in a statement released Friday. Law enforcement officials are continuing to investigate the case in which guns and drugs were also seized from a 42-foot vessel in in Brevard County near the Indian River County line. Gov. Ron DeSantis used it as a prime example for tougher laws.

What did FWC officers discover on migrant boat?

FWC reports said the boat's operator was armed. There were 25 people, including five unaccompanied children, on board the boat entering the country. Officers also found firearms, night vision gear and drugs, the report said. The exact details of the interdiction were not released.

Who is investigating the smuggling operation?

The Brevard County Sheriff’s Office and U.S. Customs and Border Protection are carrying out an investigation into the boat. It was not reported if charges had been filed in the case as of Monday morning.

What did Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis say about armed migrant boat?

DeSantis pointed to the incident as an example for the need to deter illegal immigration in a press conference this past weekend. Two separate laws signed by the governor would crack down on penalties for undocumented immigrants driving without a license and those who are re-entering the country after previously being deported.

“In their boat, in their vessel, they had firearms, they had drugs, they had night vision gear and were boating very recklessly, which would potentially endanger other folks,” DeSantis  told reporters on Friday.

DeSantis said int he press conference that the migrants were deported by the U.S. Coast Guard.

This incident comes two months after DeSantis announced that he is sending approximately 1,000 Florida National Guard troops to Texas to assist in security along the Mexican border.

Last week, DeSantis also announced that he was shoring up immigration security in the Florida Keys, where he deployed "250 additional officers and soldiers and over a dozen air and sea craft to the southern coast of Florida to protect our state."

Planned Outage for Some Cornell Lab Services

Several Cornell Lab of Ornithology services will be unavailable beginning March 19 through 6:00 a.m. U.S. Eastern time on March 21 . This is a one-time disruption while we migrate more than 1.6 billion eBird observations and additional project data to new servers. After the move, our websites will have improved reliability, stability, and room to grow. Thank you for your understanding during this outage.

Don’t worry, your data (checklists, media, Bird Academy courses, Merlin life list, etc.) will be safe during the migration and will be unaffected when we come back online.

Unavailable: The following websites and services will be down during this period:

  • eBird.org , including eBird portals, eBird Alerts, the eBird API, eBird Science, and data downloads
  • Macaulay Library
  • Birds of the World

Partially affected: Several Cornell Lab projects will remain up but services that require a login will be unavailable:

  • Bird Academy login and store will be unavailable. Users will be able to access most course materials if they were logged in to the site before the outage. Snap ID quizzes will not function during the outage.
  • NestWatch and Project FeederWatch login and data entry will be unavailable both on the website and the app. Please record your data on paper and enter it after the outage ends.
  • eBird Mobile app : The Explore and My eBird functions will not work during the outage. You can use the app to create checklists and then submit them after the outage ends. Your eBird data will be safe.
  • Merlin Bird ID app : Sound ID will continue to work, as well as Photo ID, Step-by-Step, and Explore, using your recent locations only. You will not be able to save sightings, refresh your life list, update your location, or log in to your account. These functions will return when the outage ends and your data will be safe.

Unaffected: The following sites will continue to function as normal:

  • Cornell Lab of Ornithology institutional website
  • All About Birds
  • Cornell Lab YouTube channel

What Can I Do During the Outage?

Go out birding.

  • If you already have Merlin Bird ID app installed, you can still use it for some purposes. Though you won’t be able to update your location, save sightings, or refresh your life list, the ID functions will still work with your saved locations, and you can still browse species using Explore Birds
  • If you already have the eBird Mobile app installed on your device, you can start eBird Mobile checklists during the downtime and submit them once eBird is back online. Learn how to Enter Sightings with eBird Mobile
