We used to own a boat! It’s an uncommon make/model, so I’ll leave this page up since it serves as a good introduction to this kind of catamaran. If you want to read about the ins and outs of our #boatlife, here’s a good post to start you off!

Hobbes is a 2001 Fortuna Island Spirit 37. The first owners sailed her from Capetown to Trinidad in 2004, and she was purchased in Trinidad by the 2nd owners in 2005. The 2nd owners sailed her extensively in the Caribbean and the Bahamas for 6 months a year. After that she was purchased by a 3rd set of owners in 2016 – a family of four. They had big plans to sail far and wide, but we found her up for sale in the fall of 2017.

Here are the big things that made us love Hobbes :

• The layout of the cockpit and salon – it’s a big open space, and you hardly see that kind of layout on a boat this small or this old. It’s an easy transition from the cockpit either forward or aft.
• The way she feels so light on the water – as long as we don’t weigh her down too much she should sail well, and it seems like she’s got some decent speed too.
• All the lines are run to the helm, making it easy to single-hand if needed.
• Galley up, as opposed to galley down in one of the hulls.
• She’s got some important extras – we’re happy to see there’s a watermaker aboard, and the dinghy is new. She’s already outfitted with solar panels and a wind generator.
• Oh, and this is probably the most important one: she’s got two hulls. We were dead-set on owning a catamaran, and now we do!

And here are the small features of the Island Spirit that will make such a big difference:

• The davits look sturdy, and pull the dinghy high off the water. The cross bracing keeps the dinghy from swinging – our dinghy does not move!
• There are two trampolines instead of one big one.
• The anchor drops behind the trampolines, as opposed to running across the trampolines. Doesn’t seem like a big thing, but when the chain runs across the trampolines they’re always going to be mud or rust stained.
• There’s an electric winch at the helm. The luxury!
• 17 opening hatches – with screens! Think of the ventilation! Some of the boats we looked at were so stuffy inside, and the stuffy ones tend to be the mildewy ones.
• Freshwater deck wash. As in, fresh water to rinse off when you get done swimming.

This South African cat is one of the best! Outfitted extensively, import duty paid! Recently back from the Bahamas and totally ready to go again!

Current owners have outfitted her well and loved her, and are ready to sell after enjoying several seasons in the Bahamas aboard her. She is extremely clean and well maintained, and very comfortable. She has the feel of a much bigger cat!

Hull Design and Manufacture

Island Spirit 37 Catamaran. Built by Fortuna Catamarans in Cape Town, South Africa, 2001.

• Hulls are monolithic below the waterline (i.e. solid GRP below the waterline and Balsa Core elsewhere).
• 4 double cabins, 2 heads, galley up.
• Several coats of Petit Protect epoxy barrier (2016) coat and SR60 Ablative paint on the hulls, refresh on paint 2018.
• Designed by Phil Southwell.
• Fibreglass hard top bimini made from Corecell foam and GRP.
• 4 separate water tanks.
• Cabin top has a moulded rainwater catching system built-in.

  Galley

• U-shaped galley with large counter space, Corian finish.
• 1 upright fridge with front opening door and small freezer box. Opposite galley
• 1 top opening fridge. In front of Galley.
• Propane stove, 3 burners. 2 aluminium Propane tanks in a self draining locker in the cockpit.

Spars and Rigging

• Sparcraft mast, crossbeam, boom and rigging
• Three reefing points with jammers built into the underside mast end of boom
• Topping lift
• Fully battened mainsail - average condition
• Stack pack, new 2011
• Roller furling genoa, new 2018
• Large asymmetric spinnaker in a sock - good condition
• Small symetric spinnaker in a sock - good condition: used for running dead downwind in stronger breeze
• Storm Jib. Never used

  Anchoring

• 50 lb Rockna anchor with 200 feet of galvanized chain new 2018
• 45 lb CQR anchor with 20 meters of chain and 80 meters of rope rode
• New Windlass motor, 2018

Brief history.

The Island Spirit Catamarans brand was introduced into the United States and the Caribbean charter market in 1998, it instantly became a much sought after catamaran, mainly because of the revolutionary design which offered both optimal space and superior sailing performance.

Over 50 Island Spirits have been built, 35 of which were sold in the United States between 1998 and 2006. To this day Island Spirit Catamarans are still extremely popular in the second hand market.

The Island Spirit 37 was the first model launched in 1998 followed by the Island Spirit 400 in 2001. In 2003 Amanzi Marine redesigned and launched the Island Spirit 401.

The Island Spirits have been awarded Top Ten Sail Magazine awards in 2001, 2003 and 2005. In 2003 the boat was also a nominee for boat of the year.

In 2014 Island Spirit Catamarans moved production to Thailand to provide its customers with the most competitive pricing while maintaining its highest commitment to quality.

The initial model launched in 2014 was the IS380 which is now in use across Asia in Bareboat Charter Companies, by day trip operators and a number of personal cruisers.

In 2017, Island Spirit Catamarans launched the first IS410 with models specifically developed for the bareboat charter operator, the day trip operator and personal cruising. The IS410 to CE Certified Category A.

Island Spirit Catamarans Co Ltd. Thailand:

Island Spirit Catamarans was formed as a joint venture in 2012 originally between:

• a)  Johannes Els (South African) originally from Island Spirit Catamarans in South Africa.  Jannie did the original design with in house designers that are still on staff and brought with him the boat building knowledge and built the factory in Thailand.
• b)  Ronald Patston (American) Owner of Gulf Charters Thailand, background in engineering, sales and marketing and provided financing
• c)  Jack Matz (American) Background in start-ups, company turn arounds, taking companies to the public market and financing.  Provided financing

Unfortunately Johannes Els died of a blot clot on Oct 13th 2013.  Following Jannie’s death Ron Patston moved to the CEO position and is now managing the operation on a day to day basis.  Ongoing funding for the business has been provided by the majority shareholders in the company who are currently Jack Matz and Ron Patston.

Some shares also held by key factory employees.

The company achieved Thai Board of Investment approval in September 2014 providing the ability to import goods tax and duty free for yacht being manufactured for export.  The company is also in the process of getting qualified under TAFTA and can export to Australia duty free under Tariff Code 8903.91.10

Island Spirit Catamarans Vision:

Within Australasia there is a growing market for mid-sized (36’-45’) sailing a power catamarans for recreational purposes.  With the majority of the recreational catamaran manufacturers located in France and South Africa, the cost to manufacture, transport and import catamarans to Australasia set’s a price point that is beyond that of a large portion of the available market.  Our strategy is to design and build production catamarans within Australasia initially for the Australasian market.

We have designed the yachts around state of the art manufacturing techniques featuring vacuum infusion for virtually all portions of the design (the only manufacturer doing so in Thailand) and the use of high technology adhesives.  This provides for the optimum strength and weight properties and a very repeatable process.  The current factory has a capacity of about 6 boats per year at the current staffing levels and can be ramped up to as much as 10 boats per year in the current facility.  We are currently evaluating the build of a new factory near to where we are currently located in Ban Chang Thailand.

CE Certification:

There are as you know numerous aspects to the CE certification and we have just received our final certification.  In going through the CE process we learned a lot more about the design needs in order to meet the CE requirements.   Our CE design consultant is Tim Withrington (from Australia) who has been assisting with the CE process and has been able to obtain CE Category A.

Brand: Fortuna 36 Island Spirit

The Island Spirits have been awarded Top Ten Sail Magazine awards in 2001, 2003 and 2005. Although they are a lesser known boat, they are stout and capable ocean-going catamarans. In fact, every one of these boats built was delivered on their own bottoms to owners all over the world, with 38 crossing the Atlantic for delivery in the USA. They are constructed with solid glass below the waterline and balsa cored decks. Each hull is separated into multiple compartments with a sealed crush compartment fore and aft making them extremely safe. There are just very few catamarans that offer this balance of performance, safety and excellent living accommodations.

To make the Island Spirit 36, Fortuna upgraded the transoms on the Island Spirit 35. They kept extending the transoms leading to the Island Spirit 37. All are based on the same Phil Southwell designed hull.

Originally a South African production yard, Island Spirit now operates out of Thailand. Island Spirit catamarans have been part of the charter market since 1998. The Island Spirt 38 is an ideal charter boat in the small to mid-size range, with each model in charter built and fitted out with all the modern amenities and attributes prevailing at the time of its launch.
