How modern monarchs are keeping the sailing tradition alive

For centuries, yachting has been a beloved pastime of monarchs. As Queen Elizabeth II celebrates her Platinum Jubilee after 70 years on the throne, Keith Dovkants discovers how today’s royals are carrying on this noble tradition.

In a jaunty Breton-style top and with a confident grip on the helm, the Duchess of Cambridge made a favourable impression on a sailing outing in New Zealand a while back. She match raced her husband on America’s Cup yachts around the cans in Auckland Harbour – and won. Twice. It was a light-hearted foray during an official visit in 2014 and many a sailor was cheered to see a front-line royal clearly enjoying herself on a sailboat. The Duchess, who was a keen sailor as a youngster, went on to make another high-profile appearance on a Land Rover BAR America’s Cup catamaran and became patron of the 1851 Trust, a charity dedicated to getting young people into boats and maritime industries. “I hope we can engage and inspire a new generation into sailing,” she said.

Her enthusiasm gives a timely stimulus to the long-standing love affair between European royal families and yachting.

Britain’s royals were once the standard bearers of a tradition that stretches back centuries. The Prince Regent, later George IV, joined the Yacht Club – now the Royal Yacht Squadron – in 1817 and was a keen visitor at the annual Cowes regatta. Edward VII watched the first America’s Cup race as a child in 1851 and had a passion for sailing. As Prince of Wales he owned a succession of cutters, then in 1893 ordered what was to become perhaps the most famous racing yacht of all time – Britannia .

No other boat defines royal yachting like Britannia . She was designed by the maestro GL Watson and built on the River Clyde in Scotland from wooden planking on steel frames. She measured 36.8 metres overall, with a mast that soared 43 metres above the deck. With all sails flying, her canvas spread to 959 square metres. She had a luxurious saloon and four sleeping cabins with a full-size bathroom. Decoration included tapestries and cretonnes. The crew of around 20 men occupied the forecastle, sleeping on folding cots and hammocks.

Britannia was magnificent, the queen of the Big Class, and won again and again. But she famously lost to the newer and bigger Meteor II , also designed by Watson and owned by another royal, Kaiser Willhelm II, Emperor of Germany and King of Prussia. The Kaiser was fiercely competitive, prompting his British uncle to complain: “Sailing used to be a pleasant relaxation for me. Since the Kaiser took command, it is a vexation.” In fact, he put the beloved Britannia up for sale in 1897 but repurchased her in 1899 and cruised her until his death in 1910.

In the hands of Edward’s son, George V, Britannia dominated the Big Class racing circuit again in the 1920s and was still racing in the early 1930s after modifications to sail with the J Class. The King hoped his son and heir, the future Edward VIII, would keep up the family tradition. This was not to be. The new Prince of Wales’s sporting interests lay elsewhere, as history records.

When George V died in January 1936 and no other family member stepped up to take the yacht, Britannia ’s fittings were stripped and sold for charity. The hull was towed south of the Isle of Wight by HMS Winchester and sunk with explosive charges, in accordance with the late king’s will.

Yachting was slow to recover after the Second World War, but in July 1947 Buckingham Palace announced the engagement of Princess Elizabeth to a young navy man who was mad about boats. Members of the Island Sailing Club in Cowes on the Isle of Wight bought a Dragon Class yacht for the couple as a wedding present. The Duke of Edinburgh fell upon the gift with an enthusiasm that gratified not only the ISC, but sailors everywhere. Suddenly, after the dark days of the war, their passion was being shared by one of the most glamorous and charismatic members of the royal family.

The Duke called his new boat Bluebottle . At Cowes he would happily pose for press pictures with the new boat if the photographers would keep out of his way on the water. But this, to his great annoyance, was to change.

He was still a serving naval officer and Princess Elizabeth had royal duties, so time for sailing was short. The future queen made one brief outing on Bluebottle , but mostly the boat was sailed by a sailing master and the Duke. Around this time he struck up a friendship with Uffa Fox, designer of the Flying Fifteen and other famous boats. “Uffa was a genius with a sailing boat,” the Duke later wrote. The people of Cowes presented him with a Flying Fifteen designed by Fox that he named Coweslip . She was kept at Fox’s yard and when the Royal Yacht Britannia became a regular visitor to Cowes Week, the Duke would take a launch from the ship straight to Coweslip ’s mooring.

Then came Bloodhound . Built in 1936, this 19 metre yawl was bought by the Duke and the Queen in 1962 and refitted for cruising and racing. Although the Queen sailed Bloodhound rarely, the yacht was very much part of the royal family’s life. The Duke raced her with Uffa Fox, and when Britannia took the family for their summer cruise around the Western Isles, Bloodhound went too. She was sailed by the Duke during the day with the royal children and their friends. Prince Charles was a keen sailor, but service in the Royal Navy seems to have cured any sea fever, although he did go through a windsurfing phase some years ago.

Even without a boat, the Duke of Edinburgh was a regular visitor to Cowes, notably as guest of the industrialist Owen Aisher on his Yeoman racing yachts during the 1980s and early 1990s.

But Britain’s royals were not the only ones keen on racing. Ex-King Constantine II of Greece commands immense respect. As a 20-year-old prince, he won a gold medal sailing in the Dragon Class at the 1960 Olympics. A regular at Cowes, he would often sail with the Duke of Edinburgh who, after all, is his cousin.

Constantine’s sister, now Queen Sofia of Spain, shared his passion for sailing and was a reserve in the gold medal-winning team. When she met the boat-mad future King of Spain, Juan Carlos, on a cruise around the Greek islands in 1954, they clicked instantly.

King Juan Carlos, who abdicated in favour of his son Felipe in 2014, was a Dragon Class competitor in the 1972 Olympics, although he didn’t win a medal. Juan Carlos and his son, who represented Spain in Solings in the 1992 Olympics, were keen competitors aboard Bribón , their very quick Judel/ Vrolijk TP52, placing second in the Med Cup and winning the Copa Del Rey in 2011. After his abdication, Juan Carlos sold the boat and now helms his classic Six Metre. In fact, during September 2017, at the age of 79, he and his crew aboard the Six Metre Bribón Gallant won the Classic Division for boats built before 1965 at the 6M Worlds in Vancouver, Canada.

Another Dragon aficionado was Constantine’s brother-in-law, Prince Henrik of Denmark, who died in February 2018 aged 83. He was a lifelong sailor and honorary chairman of the Royal Danish Yacht Club for 44 years. He owned six Dragons and sailed his last race aged 78. His son, Crown Prince Frederick, is also a keen sailor and he and his wife Princess Mary boarded the 30 metre super Maxi Wild Oats last December before a Christmas holiday in Tasmania, where the Princess was born. The Hobart-born royal beat her husband 2-1 in a match race back in 2005 after he contested the world Farr 40 championships off Sydney Heads.

Scandi royals adore sailing and none more than King Harald of Norway. A three-time Olympian, the grandfather of six – now aged 81 – still sails his beloved eight metre Sira , which his father King Olav V had built in the 1930s.

“I’ve raced all my life,” King Harald said after a race in Canada two years ago. “You can’t stop playing, you know.” The King taught his children to sail and daughter Princess Martha Louise recalled in a recent biography that her father would undergo a “personality change” as an instructor. “He would… start shouting and shrieking and giving orders, just a completely different Harald,” she said.

His son Crown Prince Haakon and his wife Princess Matte-Marit both sail, but the Prince says he suspects his father may be disappointed he did not pursue the sport with the same passion.

When the Royal Yachting Association celebrated the 50th birthday of its magazine, Princess Anne, its president, wrote a letter of congratulation, calling herself “a fellow sailor”. She certainly is – Anne and her husband, Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence, keep a Rustler 44, Ballochbuie , at Ardfern in Scotland and aim to cruise, sometimes as far as the Hebrides, at least twice a year. The Princess describes her role as “foredeck hand” – the boat has electric winches, in-mast furling and a bow thruster for ease of handling. At 13 metres, Ballochbuie (named after ancient woodland on the Balmoral estate), is a good size for a cruising couple.

On the Côte d Azur, where Britannia and the rest of the Big Class used to race every summer, Pierre Casiraghi , son of Princess Caroline of Monaco, is a highly competitive sailor, with Sydney-Hobart and Fastnet races under his belt. He skippers the Malizia racing team, and when he’s not competing offshore, he sails a high-speed foiling cat. Casiraghi also sponsors Sail for a Cause, a charity that supports humanitarian projects, including medical care for children. His uncle, Prince Albert II, Monaco’s ruler, owns Tuiga , a 23 metre Fife gaff cutter considered among the most beautiful of vintage yachts. Tuiga , sometimes with Prince Albert at the helm, is a regular on the classic regatta circuit, and at home is used to give youngsters sail training at the Yacht Club de Monaco.

Nancy Blackett bound out for Holland

Nancy Blackett, the classic yacht once owned by Arthur Ransome, is to recreate the dramatic voyage described in We Didn’t Mean to Go to Sea.

In the book, four children, finding themseves adrift, sail the Goblin, the fictional boat which Ransome based on Nancy Blackett, across the North Sea to Holland.

Last year, for the first time since Ransome himself sailed there in 1936, Nancy retraced the route of the Goblin, from Pin Mill on the Orwell to Flushing. The crew however consisted entirely of adults.

This year, children will make up half the crew for the voyage.

“The books are a source of inspiration for children to get sailing, and we want to recapture and extend that inspiration aboard Nancy,” explains Bill Wallace-King of Redgrave, Suffolk, skipper for the voyage, and a trustee of the Nancy Blackett Trust, which owns and preserves the historic boat.

“But,” adds Bill, ” we obviously need to do it within the realms of reality and safety, so the crew will consist of two adults and two children.” The junior crew consists of Bill’s daughter Sabina (14) and her friend Susie Martin (15) from South Lopham, Norfolk. Both have been sailing since an early age. Shipping as mate is Ken Randall, who, as the Trust’s sailing secretary co-ordinates members’ sailing on Nancy.

Yacht Club Monaco: Sea Index tool deployed in 15 Côte d’Azur harbours and marinas

TURIN, Italy, June 19, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Fifteen harbours and marinas located in a triangle between Menton, Saint-Tropez and Bonifacio in Corsica, have confirmed that they are keen to apply the SEA Index to their infrastructure. The tool launched in 2020 by the Yacht Club de Monaco as part of the collective ‘Monaco, Capital of Advanced Yachting’ approach, represents a benchmark to assess CO2 emissions of yachts over 25 metres. On the 40th anniversary of his presidency at the helm of Yacht Club de Monaco, HSH Prince Albert II hailed the success of the SEA Index ® , that was recently awarded the CAPENERGIES label as a reliable non-biased tool for owners and stakeholders concerned about the carbon footprint of pleasure boats.

"The SEA Index has become an essential tool. And I would like us now to go even further by measuring other greenhouse gas emissions and noise pollution which is a major concern," said HSH Prince Albert II. With this announcement, it’s clear an extended harbour-marina network is committed to more sustainable organisation and towards the environmental transition of the territory. "This collaboration marks recognition of the work accomplished by the SEA Index since its launch. Our aim is to federate harbours and marinas across the Mediterranean and beyond by creating a network of committed territories,” said Bernard d’Alessandri Yacht Club de Monaco General Secretary.

Deployment of the rating system in 15 harbours and marinas in the Mediterranean basin is an opportunity to respond to growth in yachting notably in the Sud region, which every year attracts over half the world’s fleet of 30+ metre yachts, a figure that has increased six-fold in 35 years. According to a study by Earthcase, instigated by the Regional Tourism Committee, the yachting sector in the Sud region has a big impact on the economy of €1.1 billion and 10,200 jobs, with the technical ecosystem contributing €438 million and 3,600 jobs, and the tourism component €663 million employing 6,600 people. With this certification and its index, these harbours and marinas will be able to allocate berths, particularly in high season, to boats with the least impact. Through this new collaboration the SEA Index plans to ramp up its policy to raise awareness of owners by involving as many stakeholders as possible in the yachting industry.

The Alternative to Huge Cruises? 3 Masts, 28 Sails and Wind Power.

We checked out the 136-passenger Sea Cloud Spirit on a Mediterranean cruise. In this era of gargantuan ships, its elegant clipper design, wooden decks and relatively small size stands out.

king sea yachting

By Ceylan Yeğinsu

From the bridge of the three-masted windjammer, the Sea Cloud Spirit , the captain called out the words we’d all been waiting for.

“Let’s set the sails!” he cried, after turning off the engines, while maneuvering to maintain an optimum angle for his 18 deckhands to climb into the shrouds and unfurl the ship’s 44,132 square feet of sails by hand.

Like acrobats, the crew scurried up the masts to the upper topgallant sails that rose nearly 200 feet above us. The ship’s captain, Vukota Stojanovic, later insisted that none of it was for show. “Whenever there is an opportunity to sail, we sail,” he said.

For the next hour, the crew hauled the ropes until the 28 sails were billowing in the wind, propelling the 452-foot-long ship — the world’s largest passenger sailing vessel on which the sails are raised by hand — toward its first port of call, Portofino, Italy.

At a time when cruise lines are packing their ever-more-gargantuan ships with water parks and basketball courts, the 136-passenger Sea Cloud Spirit, with its old-fashioned clipper design and wooden decks, stands out. It is the newest ship from the Hamburg-based Sea Cloud Cruises , and while it is the company’s biggest, Sea Cloud said it wanted to leave space for passengers to connect to the surrounding elements.

“Wherever you are on the ship, it feels like you are sitting on the water,” said Amelia Dominick, 71, a retired real estate agent from Cologne, Germany, who was on her third cruise onboard the Sea Cloud Spirit.

I had arrived for a four-night “taster sailing” from Nice, France, to the Ligurian region of Italy, designed to entice passengers to sign up for a longer cruise. Here’s what I found.

The ship and cabins

The Spirit has many comforts and luxuries, including a fitness center, library, hair salon and a spa with a Finnish sauna that overlooks the sea. The deck layouts are spacious, with nooks carved out for privacy and relaxation.

Sixty-nine spacious cabins have windows that open onto the sea. My room, a junior suite on the third deck, had two large arched windows, mahogany tables, a balcony and a comfortable couch and armchair. The marble bathroom was lavish, with a gold-plated sink and large jetted bathtub.

The elegant interior design is inspired by the original Sea Cloud, built in 1931 for Marjorie Merriweather Post, the American heiress of the General Foods Corporation, with glossy wooden panels and gold trimmings. The Sea Cloud was the largest private sailing yacht in the world before Post handed it over to the U.S. Navy for use as a weather-reporting vessel during World War II. The four-mast, 64-passenger ship has since been restored to its former glory and will sail across the Aegean and Adriatic this summer.

king sea yachting

The experience felt authentic — even before the sails were set — with a detailed safety drill. On most cruises, the drill entails a safety video and signing in at an assembly point. But here, passengers put on their life jackets and walked through emergency scenarios that included rationing food supplies and fishing from the lifeboat.

Each day, the sails were set, even during heavy rain and wind speeds over 30 knots. Guests wanting to participate in the rigging are usually invited to do so, but the weather conditions made it too risky for this sailing.

“It was amazing to watch the work go into putting the sails up and down and to experience the wind power pulling the ship so fast without the engines,” said Malte Rahnenfuehrer, a 50-year-old psychologist from Zurich, who was traveling with his partner and two children.

A man with dark hair wears navy blue and white clothing as the captain of a large windjammer sailing vessel. He stands on deck, a walkie-talkie-like device in his hand, beneath the ropes and riggings of the vessel's sails.

The captain

It is rare for cruise passengers to see the ship’s captain after the initial welcome drinks or gala dinner. But Capt. Vukota Stojanovic was omnipresent throughout the cruise, from setting sails to lifeguarding to mingling with guests.

Originally from Montenegro, Captain Stojanovic piloted container ships for years. When he was asked to consider helming the original Sea Cloud nearly 10 years ago, he hesitated because he had no experience sailing. Even after he learned the ropes — and there are 340 ropes (known as running rigging) on the vessel — he was unsure. “I grew to love the sailings, the boats, the crew the lifestyle, but I still felt I belonged on container ships,” he said. “It would be a big adjustment, especially because I would have to shave every day,” he joked.

Eventually, he accepted the opportunity and worked tirelessly to learn how to sail and operate the ship. Today, he keeps an “open bridge” policy, allowing passengers to visit the control room, even when he is wrestling with the wind.

“The crew and the passengers are all part of the experience, and I like to meet people and receive their feedback,” Captain Stojanovic said.

Environment

Sea Cloud Cruises aspires to take a “gentle” approach, using wind power to drive its ships wherever possible, even if that means changing course for optimal weather conditions. When sailing is not possible, the Spirit has two diesel-electric engines that run on low-sulfur marine diesel fuel. The company is also working with ports that have shore power capabilities to plug into the local electric power.

Onboard, there is an emphasis on reusable bottles and paper straws, and crew members separate solid waste to be compacted and removed when in port.

Excursions and Activities

We made stops in Portofino, San Remo, Italy, and St.-Tropez, France, anchoring offshore and getting to land by tender — a contrast to the big cruise ships with their loud horns and thick plumes of exhaust spewing from their funnels.

For passengers wanting to take a dip (there is no pool), the crew marked an area in the water with floats and an inflatable slide. The water was frigid, but many passengers took the plunge from the swimming deck. Guests could also take “Zodiac Safaris” around the ship to get views of the vessel from the water.

king sea yachting

Excursions ranged from food and wine tours to e-biking and beach trips. In Portofino, passengers were free to explore the sights independently, including the Castello Brown Fortress and the lighthouse on Punta del Capo rock. There was ample time to eat meals on shore as the ship did not depart until 11 p.m. Over the summer, the Sea Cloud Spirit will sail to Spain, Portugal, France and the Azores, among other destinations. On Nov. 11, she will depart for St. Maarten in the Caribbean for the winter.

Wherever the vessel goes, said Mirell Reyes, president of Sea Cloud Cruise for North America, the company tries to “stay away from the crowds and ports where big cruise ships spit out 6,000 passengers.”

Summer prices, which include food and beverages, range from $3,995 for a four-night sailing in a superior cabin to $9,420 for a veranda suite. Seven-night sailings cost between $6,995 and $16,495.

Inside the flying pyramid yacht that looks like it came from a sci-fi show

Most people can only dream of sailing the world’s oceans in a luxury yacht – but these new plans are so incredible they wouldn’t be out of place in a science fiction TV show.

The idea of a yacht lifting out of the sea and flying through the air would seem impossible to most people.

But one London-based designer is trying to bring the flying yacht into reality.

Nicknamed the ‘flying pyramid’ due to its shape, Tetra’s concept design would use hydrofoil to make it appear as if it is flying above the water.

Hydrofoil designs have multiple hullsand vanes which help the vessel lift off the surface of the water. Only a small part of the ship touches the water, massively reducing drag and offering a smoother and faster ride.

Designer Jonathan Schwinge has taken foiling technology, in use since the 1900s, and brought it into the present with a modern, sci-fi twist.

Tetra (Picture: Jonathan Schwinge/Eyelevel UK)

‘The design is instigated by the re-thinking of the form, superstructure and propulsion of the modern superyacht into a radically simple enclosure and an elevated mode of travel above the water line,’ he told The Sun .

When travelling at low speed, the Tetra would use the three hulls on its underside, but after it takes off, a torpedo-shaped foil will extend down from the hull which will help to lift the yacht out of the water.

Superyacht will reportedly have a speed of 17.2mph during take-off, reaching up to 43.7mph while cruising above the water.

The design would include an auto-pilot ‘fly-by-light’ borrowed from the aviation industry, to help take control during bad weather.

Tetra would be built from carbon fibre and stainless steel, but despite its huge size it would only be able to accommodate 10 people, including the crew.

When docked, the superyacht will be able to unfold three sides of this body to become a ‘sun deck’ – an outdoor lounge area with dining facilities and access to the sea.

The design is still being worked on, and while Tetra’s potential cost hasn’t yet been revealed, it’s sure to be extremely pricy.

But surely, the opportunity to fly across the water like a James Bond supervillian or an extra-terrestrial in a spacecraft would be worth any price tag?

Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez are taking Greece by land, sea and air.

An isle spy tells Page Six that the power couple has been seen on Mykonos, where helicopter pilot Sánchez was spotted taking a whirly-bird for a spin off the duo’s boat, which is filled with “toys,” y’know, like choppers.

Said the fellow traveler: “Jeff was seen coming from the city center in Chora ” — as the tony town is called by locals and in-the-know visitors — “and getting on and off his helicopter onto his smaller support boat.”

Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez

The couple was also photographed strolling through the streets of Mykonos hand-in-hand.

The source further said that, “Lauren has been seen flying a helicopter on and off their support boat, where they keep all their toys . . . helicopters, speed boats and other water toys.”

The source also told us that, “Jeff’s keeping the super big boat they live on, on the other side of the island where there is less wind.”

Jeff Bezos, Lauren Sanchez

The source was referring to the couple’s famous $500 million superyacht , Koru, which they debuted last summer. Building of the mammoth vessel for the Amazon tycoon began in 2018.

Bezos also reportedly owns a “smaller” $75 million yacht, Abeona, which shadows his bigger boat . (One boat blog explained the concept: “In car terms, this is basically the same as buying a Porsche so you can drive to the garage where your Bugatti is parked.”)

The little ol’ support boat can accommodate 45, including 20 crew.

Bezos also owns a fleet of helicopters and private planes plus properties galore, of course.

Also on Mykonos as the summer heats up , we hear, is billionaire Jets owner Woody Johnson, who was spotted at fancy beach club Scorpios, after taking a tender from his own yacht.

Bezos and Sánchez have also been seen in Greece dining on the island of Hydra with Bezos’ son Preston.
