leopard maxi yacht

When London-based yachtsman Mike Slade wanted to build his latest Maxi, Leopard 3, he came to McConaghy.

With the immediate success and proven reliability of other McConaghy-built, canting keel super-maxis such as Alfa Romeo and Wild Oats XI, McConaghy’s experience in constructing specialised hulls, foils, steering systems and composite components enabled us to construct one of the most technologically complex yachts afloat.

McConaghy_Boats_Leopard (2)

Designed by Farr Yacht Design, Leopard 3 is a stylish and technologically advanced sailing yacht. She features a lightweight yet luxury interior by Design Unlimited, comprising a large, comfortable cockpit and extensive deck area, with broad companionway steps in carbon fibre that lead down to a spacious saloon.

The yacht is 30 metres long, 6.8 metres wide, has a 5.5 metre draft, a 4.5 metre fixed bowsprit, one towering 47-metre mast and a keel that cants 40 degrees either side of centreline.

The sleek, powerful carbon fibre/nomex hull provides the platform for exceptional speed and the volume for remarkable accommodations.

The master cabin and two guest doubles are all en suite, and there are also two single Pullman-berth cabins. Separate crew quarters are located aft of the main saloon.

leopard maxi yacht

39 years ago the International Maxi Association was started as a small gathering of maxi yacht owners wishing to bring more co-ordination to their sailing. Since then it has grown both in the size of its membership and its remit, to become an organization with much wider influence and endorsed by World Sailing to organize World Championships and to manage maxi racing globally. The IMA’s overall aim is to encourage greater participation in maxi racing around the world. To this end, the Association has become increasingly involved in all the regattas with significant maxi participation. Another of the IMA’s major responsibilities is to encourage the highest standards of race management, safety and measurement for both inshore and offshore maxi yacht events. For maxi regattas the IMA assists with the standardization of entry and the writing of notice of races and sailing instructions. The Association can also assist with race management and support and endorse events that are held to its high standards. For 2021 as well as all our usual events and our Mediterranean Maxi Inshore and Offshore Championships, we are adding a new regatta run by the Yacht Club Italiano as a season opener in Portofino at the end of April. We are also supporting the famous Transpacific Yacht Race from Los Angeles to Hawaii and the Aegean 600. Our flagship event, the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup, we trust will be able to proceed this September in Porto Cervo in near normal conditions. Here and at Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez we will be joined by the J Class, a class formally affiliated with the IMA, as we await news of their next World Championship. The IMA’s membership remains healthy – a trend we hope will continue. We need maxi owners to support us so that we can support them! We remain extremely grateful for the generous long term and loyal support from our main sponsor Rolex and are pleased to welcome Credit Suisse as a further sponsor. We also thank the marine clothing company Code 0 for kitting out the IMA team in smart new gear. As usual I thank my hard-working and dedicated staff. Throughout the pandemic we have met weekly on Zoom but are greatly looking forward to seeing each other in person, as well as all maxi owner and sailors in the forthcoming season. We wish you an excellent season ahead.

February 2021 Andrew McIrvine IMA Secretary General

Race This 100-Foot, Record-Breaking Superyacht in World-Class Regattas

The leopard 3 wants you to take it for a spin.

leopard maxi yacht

If you have ever thought seriously about yacht racing , super maxi yacht racing must be your ultimate goal. At 100-foot plus, boats in the super maxi class deliver extreme speed on a big platform. Super maxis compete in the best of all regattas . From Porto Curvo Sardinia to Virgin Gorda in the British Virgin Islands, super maxis call the world’s most beautiful ports home. This is big boat sailing and crews of 20 are the minimum.

Super maxi yacht racing is also very expensive. There’s the cost of the yacht itself, the upkeep of sails and mechanical maintenance, not to mention the expense of the crew needed to race. You’re looking at maxi-millions. The ability to write these checks is a form of stamina that many sailors do not possess. At that point, you’ve devoted your entire life to the sport. The Volvo Ocean Race, for example, an around the world event, requires a dedication and level of skill attainable only by a handful of sailors .

You are not going to be in that race.

So how to have a once in a lifetime maxi yacht racing experience? How do you sail in The Lora Piana Superyacht Regatta in Sardinia in the summer or its sister regatta in the blue Caribbean waters off Virgin Gorda in the winter?

The answer is on Leopard 3, a 100-foot, Bruce Farr-designed and McConaghy-built superyacht. She has broken record after record in race after race, including in the The Rolex Maxi Yacht Cup and Les Voiles de St. Tropez. She has also broken trans-Atlantic records. Her list of firsts requires the use of a superlative.

Leopard 3 is owned by Mike Slade, and her captain from the very beginning has been Chris Sherlock. Slade is a veteran racer and Leopard 3 is his latest in a long line of racing yachts. Slade is as charming as the proprietor of any unique experience need be. He has a wide smile and possesses a beguiling exuberance when it comes to his boat.

I was fortunate enough to be invited aboard for a race during the superyacht regatta in Bermuda organized around the America’s Cup in June. It was a thrill I will not forget. Leopard 3 is fast. She can do almost 40 knots downwind. She has two dagger boards and a canting keel that allows her to sail to windward with ease. Her massive sails are top of the line and always in race condition. Sherlock said, “When it comes to gear and maintenance, we spare no expense.” Slade added, “This is home. We only know one way to do this: right.”

The race crew performance was flawless, like a grand ballet in which everyone has rehearsed their roles. The sail change choreography and dagger board utilization went off without a hitch.

We raced against some of the biggest and best maxi racers like Highland Fling and Visione .

Yet, perhaps the most amazing feature of Leopard 3 is that she is for charter. You can take her out for a spin at any one of a dozen regattas, or if you prefer, for a fast sail with your friends. Like the lord of a large manor, Slade welcomes the revenue that is required to keep his enterprise going. “We have a very successful charter program,” he explained. “We can provide a once in a lifetime experience for someone that wants to see what a maxi yacht racer feels like. We love having guests onboard, we have had nothing but great experiences.” Those who charter Leopard 3 are usually either corporate team-building clients or just a group of good friends who have always wanted to race.

If you want to take over the whole boat, Slade can stay ashore and Captain Sherlock will be your host. Leopard 3 is like other racers and cruisers. She has a modular interior: The furniture can be removed for race mode and put back for comfortable fast cruising.

Cloud 10 Racing of Newport, R.I. produces custom regatta experiences and offers a similar solution. With a network of yachts similar in scope to Leopard 3, you can book a charter through them for some of the world’s most exciting regattas. Tony Rey, the principal at Cloud 10, said, “The Leopard 3 model is the gold standard of the ultimate regatta experience. They really do it right. Additionally, there are multiple options out there to fit nearly any budget based on desired venue and crew size. We work with the client to provide a unique, ultimate regatta package. The racing will be fast and fun, and the shore-side activities memorable!”

For sure, a regatta on Leopard 3 is a bucket list experience, but if you have ever wanted to race yachts at this level there are other ways — just do it.

Jonathan Russo has been a sailing enthusiast for 30 years. He sails his Sabre 38 “Sachem” and an Etchell’s from the Shelter Island Yacht Club. He has written about sailing and racing for Soundings, Scuttlebut and The Shelter Island Reporter.

Written by Mike Smith

ICAP Leopard, the 100ft super-maxi racing yacht owned by Helical Bar PLC chief executive Mike Slade, has ended her transatlantic record attempt . After a fantastic start, the ICAP Leopard racing yacht found herself in a windless high pressure at 02:00 UTC on Saturday 420 nm from the finish. With the record looking less and less achievable, Skipper and Boat Captain Chris Sherlock took the decision to abandon the attempt.

The ICAP Leopard Supermaxi Yacht On Her Transatlantic Attempt

Having started on Saturday 29th May in New York, sailing yacht ICAP Leopard has had to contend with variable conditions from the start. The crew worked hard in the first few hours to position themselves correctly to pick up a weather front with enough breeze to get them up to record speed. Having achieved this, the crew were then able to keep the boat going fast through a cold and wet few days mid-Atlantic. With a record attempt of this nature the weather has to be consistently good for the entire voyage, which is hard to predict 9 or 10 days in advance. On this occasion a high pressure system on the approach to the UK blocked ICAP Leopard’s path and ended any hope of breaking the record.

ICAP Leopard Yacht Owner, Mike Slade, commented: ”We have a great yacht which has now proven itself over the last three years to be physically fast enough and powerful enough to easily churn out 500+ miles day after day and could have broken this record. However, on this occasion it materialised that the weather was not on our side and after a fantastic run at the start, the crew were forced to gybe all the way home during the latter part of the race. It just goes to prove how difficult this record is to beat and what a great boat Mari Cha IV is.”

Chris Sherlock also commented: “The crew did a phenomenal job to put us in such a great position during the first 5 days of the attempt, it is just a real shame that the forecast didn’t work out for us on this occasion. When we started we always knew that there may be a ridge of high pressure blocking our route to the finish, but we hoped that we would be able to navigate our way through without slowing too much. It is really disappointing that our record attempt was thwarted by the wind gods but no doubt we’ll be back to take on the mighty Atlantic again next year.”

Supermaxi ICAP Leopard Race Yacht Crew

Sailing yacht ICAP Leopard will now spend the summer in UK waters competing in the JP Morgan Round the Island Race on 19th June followed by a large number of corporate charters and sponsor commitments.  Her next record breaking adventure will see Slade and his crew attempt to take on the Sevenstar Round Great Britain & Ireland Race starting on August 23rd this year.

Saturday 05 June: Shut down, shut off, shut out!!!!

I am afraid whichever way we look at our situation we have next to zero wind and are going nowhere, let alone fast. Despite a great days sail yesterday at around 02.00hrs this morning the mighty wind gods switched the fan off for us and left us wallowing around with 420 odd Nm to the finish at lands end.

leopard maxi yacht

Supermaxi ICAP Leopard

No matter how many times we look at different weather models (forecasts) or speak to Roger Badham our weather router we cannot find a way through this ridge of high pressure. When we departed NY we always knew that there was the chance of this ridge blocking the entry to the UK and we were prepared to take the risk. There are three parts in my view to a Trans Atlantic record attempt: 1) the departure 2) the middle and 3) the finish. If you can get all three in one window, bearing in mind by the time you go green (‘let’s go’) in NY and get the crew from all over the world, you are relying on weather data looking forward 9-10 days. The further you look forward the less accurate the forecast becomes – hence the element of risk! Sometimes the cookie crumbles your way and sometimes it doesn’t! We felt we had two out of the three we needed, otherwise you wait forever.

Supermaxi ICAP Leopard Race Yacht Transatlantic Record Attempt 2010

Obviously as a team we are disappointed not to have achieved our goals but have no excuses or blame on anything or anyone – we were lucky enough to have a terrific bunch of guys on the yacht who pushed the yacht to limits it has never seen and yet again this fantastic machine has come through pretty much unscathed. We had a blast with some unbelievable sailing.

What now? As I sit looking at the computers with Hugh Agnew (navigator) we have 390 NM to Lands End and we are motor sailing in order to get there as quick as possible to get six of the guys off the yacht in Falmouth into waiting taxis to Heathrow in order to get them to their next regatta in Sardinia starting on Tuesday. We will take on some fuel before heading to Southampton and hopefully arrive around Monday night or early Tuesday morning for the remainder of the guys to fly home.

What next? Leopard will be competing in the JP Morgan Round The Island Race on June 19th followed by the Cowes – Dinard/St Malo on July 2nd , 6 weeks of corporate sailing and then our UK season closure will be the Round Great Britain and Ireland yacht race starting on August 23 (with a tracker installed) before heading off to the Med and then the Caribbean before being back in New York for the same time next year where we may just try and do it all over again?

Signing off… a huge thank you to our great Boss Mike Slade for letting the “Renegades” take his 100 foot toy for a gentle spin around the North Atlantic!! Unfortunately Mike couldn’t be with us this trip as he had business commitments during the final week of our weather window for departure from NY. Another big thank you to our long time friends and sponsor, ICAP, who have been a fantastic support and have been with us since the beginning when we launched ICAP leopard in June 2007 and last but not least a huge thanks to Louise who looks after all of the logistics, website, sales and marketing for the yacht. She works tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure that the whole operation runs smoothly & so it has been a really manic month for her!

Owner interview: Mike Slade

Mike slade, owner of sy 'leopard 3', explains why he is turning his attention to superyacht regatta charters….

Image for article Owner interview: Mike Slade

Ten years after its launch, the 30m Leopard 3 has certainly made a name for itself on the maxi racing circuit, and consequently has proved to be a success on the charter market, which may be the main reason Mike Slade has remained a yacht owner for all these years. Having entered the market in 1988 with an Ocean 80 named Ocean Leopard , part of what kept the programme going was his ability to run the boat as a business.

“We were well marketed, well chartered and we were making a regular, minor profit,” remembers Slade. “That’s when I got the bug.” By taking the same successful ingredients from Ocean Leopard and Slade’s following build, the 28m Leopard of London – both designed to be competitive racing yachts fitted out with a luxurious interior – Slade launched Leopard 3 , which was built on the same business model, in 2007.

“I designed the boat heavier than my competition would be on the racing circuit,” explains Slade. “We were going to be about 45 tonnes for racing and about 55 tonnes when fitted out below, whereas other stripped-out maxis coming out at the time, such as Wild Oats XI , Alfa Romeo II and the first Rambler , were all around 32 tonnes. About 20 years earlier, Leopard would have been a very light boat, but not against the current competition, because I wanted it to have the bunks and the fit-out to be a luxury cruising yacht if that was the way the market went.”

The design process was carefully mapped out and a balance was struck regarding Leopard ’s multi-functionality. With no compromise made on comfort in order to make the boat lighter, and therefore more competitive on the racing circuit, the vessel was optimised for racing and its owners, but also for its charter needs. For example, the large saloon is designed for the sail-bag length but also to cater for the 20 people who would come on board during corporate day charters, as well as for guest comfort during term charters.

Despite her extra weight, Leopard proved successful on the racing circuit, winning some very prestigious prizes, and Slade has been able to rely on the boat’s reputation to attract charter enquiries. Even 10 years on, Leopard remains competitive, however, given the boat’s age, Slade is now taking the next step. “There comes a time when you need to grow up a bit, and the idea of racing this boat against the Comanche s of this world seems a bit unrealistic,” he admits. “This is where our 100ft length is important as it enables us to move up into the superyacht classes.”

Much to Slade’s surprise and, indeed, pleasure, the move into the superyacht sector has been a popular one. Leopard had been chartered over the last Caribbean season for the RORC Caribbean 600 race, Loro Piana Caribbean Superyacht Regatta and the St Barths Bucket, and finished the season at the America’s Cup Superyacht Regatta. Chartering in the region of £100k for the RORC 600s alone, with around £40k of that going towards regatta costs, it is evident that the bounties associated with these regattas are sizeable. However, this doesn’t take into account the amount that has to be spent on new technology, maintenance and wear and tear on the boat.

Having a race boat available for charter at a superyacht regatta is a fairly unique concept. Most superyacht owners prefer not to put their boats through that kind of rigour while someone else is using it and most can afford not to charter anyway. Furthermore, there are not many boats that sail as fast as Leopard but at the same time can be fitted out on the interior and deal with the extra weight that involves. As such, Slade is already discovering how rewarding the superyacht regatta charter market can be.

“We have been chartered for every regatta we have been doing this year and we will actually come out of that particular six months with a profit, which I have never managed before,” says Slade. “We are finding that this market is actually of more interest than the term charter market, which has been disastrous in the Caribbean this year and no one quite knows why.”

Enjoying an enviable level of interest in superyacht race charters due to her reputation and unique set-up, Slade believes Leopard is known as a way to experience something different. Slade’s long-time captain, Chris Sherlock, likes to use the analogy that chartering Leopard is like Volvo 70 sailing, but with the service and luxury of a superyacht: good food, comfy beds and air-conditioning (if clients are willing to take on the extra weight of the generator).

Race charters allow guests to dip their toes into competitive racing while also enjoying the best of superyacht sailing. Reflecting on the Leopard model, could the promotion of more superyacht regatta charters act as a platform from which to spark new interest in the large-sailing-yacht sector as well as providing a cushion from which an owner could alleviate running costs?

“People coming to charter with us will get the bug and could very likely go out and build something around the 120ft-130ft mark themselves,” agrees Slade. “I would say that is something highly likely to come from what we are doing on the superyacht circuit – I haven’t seen it happen yet but I am sure it will.”

While Slade will miss Leopard not being so present on the maxi yacht circuit, he is determined that this new era for the boat will be worthwhile. “I have to sit back and realise that we have done awfully well, and we are incredibly grateful to all the people who have helped us on the journey so far,” he says. “But now it seems that the superyacht regattas will gain us charters, which helps me a lot with the costs of running the boat.”

While the pinnacle of Leopard ’s racing career may be over, the business aspect is certainly not. Slade will be looking to do more term charters in the Mediterranean as well as more regattas at the end of the season, which he is open to going 50/50 on with charter clients. He adds that he may even look at settling down the programme in Palma this coming winter, although this seems unlikely having heard his view of the boat as a business.

“I can’t just look at a boat doing nothing; it would drive me mad,” he concludes. “Having said that, my business is my business, but this whole time yachting has been about fun for me, and long may it continue.”
