Hurricane Beryl sank Tony Buzbee's boat in Galveston marina

Hurricane Beryl brought down Houston lawyer Tony Buzbee 's boat, sinking it almost fully underwater while docked in Galveston's Pelican Rest Marina. Buzbee posted a photo of the boat's demise on Instagram Tuesday morning to eulogize his vessel, dubbed "The Patriot." 

"Although we did our best, she ultimately wasn’t able to be saved," Buzbee wrote on Instagram alongside photos of the boat almost fully underwater. In his Instagram story, he also showed The Patriot in the process of sinking, simply captioned, "Damnit!"

The boat appears to be an Azimut 54 yacht, which is certainly no dinghy. Anew one will run you about $1.2 million and features two levels, a sun pad in the bow, a fully equipped kitchen, interior sofas, three sleeping areas (including a full-height owner's cabin) and a full bathroom.

The famous lawyer, former Houston mayoral and city council candidate, and former THC-infused seltzer peddler is known for his flashy style. Earlier this year, Buzbee showed off custom Ken Paxton Nikes after successfully defending the Texas attorney general. He was also once the victim of a date destroying two original Andy Warhol pieces at his home .

It's unknown how long Buzbee has owned The Patriot, but he posted a photo in March from an outing while showing it to his wife, Frances Moody, saying he " couldn't hide it forever ."

Buzbee's boat wasn't the only thing that experienced Beryl's wrath on Monday—other boats and cars were discovered on Galveston's beaches after the storm. The Category 1 hurricane caused widespread flooding and damage across Southeast Texas. Millions were still without power Tuesday morning.

"All in all, I’ll consider us lucky," Buzbee wrote on Instagram. "I know many others didn’t fare as well. This hurricane was no joke."

Long Beach boat crash leaves 1 dead, 10 taken to the hospital

One man died and 10 people were taken to the hospital after a boat crash in Long Beach Wednesday, according to the Long Beach Fire Department. 

It happened in Alamitos Bay and paramedics responded at 9:21 p.m., said Jake Heflin, a fire department spokesperson. Lifeguards and firefighters who were assisting with the water rescue said the 48-foot boat crashed into the jetty off of Marina Way. 

The man who died was identified on Friday as 59-year-old John Correa. 

There was a total of 11 people aboard and three were left in critical condition, fire officials said. Between four and five people had to be rescued from the boat and the rest were rescued from the jetty.

The night of the incident, fire officials said four people sustained serious injuries. All were in stable condition as of Friday.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation but authorities said speed is believed to be a possible factor.

"The yacht was traveling at a high rate of speed," said U.S. Coast Guard's Richard Uranga. "Don't know if it was also related to alcohol, because of the high rate of speed and it was at night."

Some people who visited the area Thursday for the Fourth of July said that there was a bittersweet feeling on the day after learning of the tragedy. 

"It's certainly tragic when somebody loses their life at any time, but on a holiday it becomes a staple in your mind," said Hilliard Hampton, who was visiting the area from Michigan.

5 burned after boat fire at marina on Lake Anna

SPOTSYLVANIA COUNTY, Va. -- A boat fire left five people with burns at a marina on Lake Anna Friday, sources told Jon Burkett.

It happened just before 7 p.m. in the 4600 block of Courthouse Road near Anna Point Marina in Spotsylvania County.

Sources said Louisa County firefighters also responded.

All five patients were flown to the hospital.

As Hurricane Beryl churns toward Jamaica, the islands devastated in its path reckoned with the scale of the destruction on Wednesday.

In Grenada, satellite imagery showed flattened houses and buildings without roofs. Grenada’s islands of Carriacou and Petite Martinique bore the brunt of the damage. Officials said roughly 98 percent of the islands’ buildings had been destroyed.

In Argyle, a popular tourist town with dozens of vacation rentals in Carriacou, before-and-after images showed structures reduced to rubble.

The island’s docks, usually filled with boats, were empty. Along the northeast coastline of Carriacou, damage continued far inland, satellite imagery showed. With tourism as one of the island’s main sources of income, the airport and some hotels reopened as cleanup operations began, the Grenada Hotel and Tourism Association said .

Despite the extensive damage, so far the death toll appeared to be low. In Grenada, officials reported three deaths from the storm, two of them in Carriacou.

Officials said the Category 4 storm had knocked out the power supply on the islands, while damaged roads had cut off some of Carriacou and Petite Martinique’s roughly 9,000 residents. Nearly a third of Grenada’s water supply had been disrupted, according to the National Water and Sewerage Authority.

An alleged drunken boater was arrested over the weekend after ramming a vessel into a Macomb County Sheriff’s Marine Division patrol boat and another boat docked along a seawall at a St. Clair Shores marina, according to sheriff’s officials.

The incident occurred at about 7 p.m last Friday at Jefferson Beach Marina after sheriff’s deputies had stopped another boat, a 17-foot Wellcraft, for a potential marine violation when a 30-foot Sea Ray Cabin Cruise rammed into the docked boats, causing damage to both of them, according to officials. The Sea Ray, operated by a 69-year-old Oak Park man, “was traveling at a rate greater than slow, no wake speed” at the Lake St. Clair marina, officials said.

The Sea Ray operator showed signs of impairment during field sobriety tests and was arrested for operating a watercraft under the influence of alcohol, officials said.

A body-camera video of the incident was posted on social media by the Sheriff’s Office.

Photos, videos show impact of Hurricane Beryl in Texas

Hurricane Beryl is bringing damaging winds and flooding rainfall to Houston, Texas, hours after making landfall along the Texas coast around 4:30 a.m. July 8. The Category 1 storm is the second named storm and first hurricane of the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season.

As expected,  Beryl strengthened as it approached the coast . By the time it made landfall near Matagorda, winds had increased to 80 mph, according to  the National Hurricane Center .

As of 7 a.m. CDT, Beryl was bringing life-threatening storm surge and strong winds as it moves over eastern Texas. Damaging winds are ongoing along the coast, with strong winds moving inland.

Sustained winds remain at 80 mph as Beryl moves to the north at 12 mph. At 10 a.m. EDT, Beryl was located 20 miles west of Houston, with the center of the storm about 150 miles southeast of Austin.

Sunrise in Matagorda was at 6:33 a.m. CDT. When conditions are safe, photos and videos of the damage Beryl left behind will be available. We'll update this story throughout the day, but here are images that have been shared so far on social media.

Man killed, 3 others injured in Brooklyn boat collision

GERRITSEN BEACH, Brooklyn (WABC) -- A man was killed in a boat collision in Brooklyn.

It happened Saturday in the water near Avenue X in Gerritsen Beach.

Police say one boat was carrying three people, including a 58-year-old man, who was killed. The other boat had one man aboard.

The three people who survived the crash were all taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

There are no details yet on what led to the collision.

We had anchored for the night but when the weather got bad we went here and tied up to their outer dock after closing. Left a message saying we would settle up with them in the morning. We didn't use electric or water and they were super friendly and understanding. Gave us a discounted rate and we left there very thankful.

This is a fairly small marina.......I'm sure they experience a labor shortage like everyone........ but the people on staff were friendly enough. You should plan to cook on board. It's a rural setting for sure. Restrooms were clean. Small fuel dock, it appeared that only one vessel at a time for fuel fill up. After waiting a half hour we left and got fuel down the way. We would return for sure

We had read a lot of good reviews about the marina, unfortunately, our experience was not very pleasant. We had read about great customer service and help with lines, but we couldn't get anyone on the radio or on the phone. No one helped us with the lines either at arrival or departure! They were busy with their rental boats, I guess! And we were waked a lot until dark. Be aware of shallow water! With 2.5 ft under our keel and constant waking, we were nervous! It was too late in the day, or we would have gone elsewhere.

We stayed here for two days to wait out winds 30 gusting to 42. They warned us when we called ahead that the outside transient dock drops to 4' at low tide - and it did. Very nice staff. Not an ideal deeper draft overnight. Waterway Guide is incorrect - there is NO LAUNDRY (please change). Wifi didn't reliably reach the outer "L", and there were no bikes to lend (at least in January), but they did allow us to borrow a personal car to drive to Food Lion. 3/4 mile walk to a café/bar. No Pump out.

Made a planned stop based off of previous reviews . . . Book a slip, but was pleased that they put us on a T (actually an L) wall. Alex and his bride were there to catch our lines and get us situated. Great facilities, super clean/nice restrooms, showers and great hospitality . . . Arrived at high tide, 41' DeFever, 14' beam, 4.5' draft . . . Left at dead low tide and kicked up a little mud . . . Would have given a 4 star because of idiot boaters not following "No Wake" rules, but Alex sounded an air horn to slow them down . . . Definitely would return!

We stayed on a cool Sunday night. Easy to tie up on the outside dock. Wakes were minimal as almost all of the passersby slowed when they saw our red trawler. The docks are in very good shape, the restrooms/showers were absolutely spotless. Staff was very helpful and friendly. Courtesy bicycles available to go to a restaurant or grocery store. Fuel was a good price but we didn't need any. Our 40 feet was probably the max they can handle so call ahead to confirm if you're larger than 40 feet.

It's a small marina that has it all. Easy floating dock, great customer service, and the nicest showers we have seen yet.

Very nice quaint marina. I stopped on way through to Florida for fuel and a dog bathroom break. Very nice employees and owner, would definetly stop again.

The marina isn’t large and doesn’t have a restaurant or fancy amenities but they get five stars as we arrived late, after hours. They helped tie us up, then fuel up, and then put us back on the face dock for an early departure. Decent floating docks, service above and beyond, power and water available. What more can you ask for?

Á very well set up facility for gas our repairs or just a rest stop. The people are wonderful and always willing to help.
