INTERIOR MOOD

The MCY 66 features incredible internal spaces for a yacht in its size category. The additional bow portholes give the yacht an extended external appearance and provide higher exposure to natural light throughout the VIP cabin. The enlarged MCY’ iconic porthole enhances the intimate and relaxing feeling of the owner cabin. The guests’ cabins with their dedicated bathrooms follow the spacious volumes common to the other areas of this new model. The distinctive bow portholes not only elongate her exterior styling but also enrich the VIP cabin with natural light. This concept of spaciousness and light continuity is further enhanced in the owner’s cabin, augmented by Monte Carlo’s signature enlarged portholes once more. Key features include the main deck, which exhibits a seamless flow between the aft galley and the forward living area, a design augmented by broad breaches in the bulwarks. Her lower deck is available in a three or four-cabin configuration, with a master cabin amidship and two to three guest cabins (one VIP), all ensuite. Becoming a classic: Inside the re-invented MCY 66

After making its first appearance beneath the spotlights of the Messe Dusseldorf in January this year, the revamped 20.1m MCY 66 is in the water, dipping its toe for the first time just four weeks ago. Its robin-egg blue hull shines at the dock of Monte Carlo Yachts ’ Monfalcone-based yard on a drizzly April spring day.

The Nuvolari Lenard designed-66 is the “second generation” of the existing 65 model. Together with the yard, the firm aims to gradually produce second and generation models of each MCY model with an “evolution, not revolution” design philosophy in mind. This has seen the yard reject the insatiable appetite for “the new” in the hope of creating a stream of classic designs.

“It’s an unstable philosophy to say that the new is better than everything else,” says Dan Lenard , one half of Italian design studio Nuvolari Lenard. “That’s where the mainstream market is but we have to be more cautious, simply because these are the most expensive items people possess in their life which they don’t need.”

MCY’s alternative pursuit for quality and evolving, timeless design has made the brand “unique in the marketplace,” Lenard says. He points to household name iconic brands, such as Rolex and Porsche, which have taken the same path – always seeking to evolve long lasting, classic designs. “The common thing these brands share is high quality and high engineering,” he says.

It is crucial therefore that MCY models must be recognisable. Nuvolari Lenard has set about future-proofing the MCY design by making design details as idiosyncratic as possible. On the 66, this includes the high bow and aft glass doors, which separate the main deck saloon from the cockpit; a feature inspired by superyacht design, Lenard says. The 66’s “huge carbon fibre hardtop” and recognisable “round windows” also form part of the 66’s design signature.

Key interior materials meanwhile include natural stone and wood, combined with lighter colours and surfaces with high level of reflective lacquer surfaces. This “bright atmosphere”, MCY managing director Fabrizio Iarrera says, “gives the idea of a larger yacht.” These materials also have their origins in superyacht design, Lenard says, revealing the firm has used many of the same materials in projects measuring between 70m – 100m.

This strikes a happy chime with owners, he adds. “There is an incredibly high return value of a proud owner showing the boat off and saying that some of the materials are on a 100m yacht – that makes a difference,” he says. Iarrera agrees. “We treat each 66 like it’s a superyacht.”

This is also reflected in the design of the guest cabins, which are styled in the same level of luxury as the master. “The same materials are used, the same level of attention,” Iarrera says. “There is an uncompromising level of quality.”

While the 66’s interiors are customisable to clients’ wishes, both owners of the first two second generation models have decided to stick by-and-large to Nuvolari Lenard’s original design. The three-cabin, three-bathroom layout can also be adapted into a four-cabin configuration, though no owners of the five 66s currently sold have gone for it. Regardless, the master cabin must stay aft of the lower deck accommodation layout, Iarrera says, revealing the deck level is designed around its location.

All of this, Lenard says, has formed an MCY “vocabulary” which has protected the design to such an extent that "you either completely copy Monte Carlo Yachts or you don’t look anything like Monte Carlo Yachts.” “We are constantly improving the technical aspect, while the styling is slowly changing,” he says. “That is the target of MCY, to be there in 30 years just as recognisable as we are today.”

Key to this is MCY’s success in winning the lifelong loyalty of its owners, for the brand to be passed from generation to generation, like a family heirloom. “That is our aim,” Lenard says, “for people to proudly say that, in their family, they always have Monte Carlos. That would be the best phrase to hear before I die.”

Monte Carlo Yachts MCY 66 Sea Trial

Climbing on board the brand-new Monte Carlo Yachts MCY 66 with her designer is an unmissable opportunity. The presence of Dan Lenard enables us to fully understand the many peculiarities that this yacht encapsulates and that, because of its beauty, would risk being overshadowed.

The first of these characteristics – excuse the venality of my statement – is related to the value for money of this yacht that, built with extreme care and qualities that are typical of superyachts only, is offered for sale at a price inexplicably aligned with the rest of the market.

This unique method results into extraordinary boats that, despite the constant search for a refined understatement, cannot hide an important building superiority.

An understatement that becomes more evident in the introduction of the three new models – the MCY 66 , the MCY 70 and the MCY 76 – that, despite being completely new, retain the same name of their predecessors, offering a precious and refined continuity of image.

Soundproofing is excellent, the noise of the twin Man V8 1200 HP engines is barely audible while we sail at a displacement speed of about 10 knots. The construction of the structure is equally good, as demonstrated by the total absence of vibrations that, especially at intermediated speeds, usually affects many other boats.

I climb on the flybridge and get controls. These weather conditions are perfect to test the most exposed driving position. However, despite blasts, the deck of the MCY 66 remains totally dry and protected from water sprays. The flared shape of the bow, made exactly as every bow should be, reflects water flows without exception.

I put my hands on the electronic throttles – Aventics-branded of course – and start to accelerate slowly. I love this soft and precise control system since it allows me to perfectly measure out the great power that the Man V8 engines deliver without hesitation.

I get the Monte Carlo Yachts MCY 66 on plane at 12 knots and the hull immediately gets rid of friction and starts to slide on the water without never changing its trim. I push throttles a little forward and I find myself sailing at 15 knots at just 1,500 rpm with a substantially perfect trim.

I speed up and, at 2,000 rpm, I reach little less than 25 knots, which is another important speed that, at a low rpm, allows fast transfers without sacrificing the navigation comfort that, albeit at this speed, continues to be perfect on board the Monte Carlo Yachts MCY 66.

Totally unaware of her 20 meters and 40 tons at full charge, the MCY 66 heels and moves within a very tight turn radius. I keep my turning radius until we reach our own wake and, despite the dimensions of waves, the yacht cuts through them without any shocks.

The pilot station, although equipped with all you need to sail, integrates with the overall design while minimizing its presence and maximizing the overall view.

The full-beam Master Cabin uses all the 5.20 meters of width to create a simply huge environment. Closing the access door, the result is a small apartement that, totally independent from the rest of the yacht, is equipped with a private hallway, a large bathroom and a bedroom of over 20 square meters.

At the foot of the bed, a refined boiserie and a pop-up tv screen complete the décor of a cabin whose interior architecture matches an an objectively remarkable beauty.

Equally remarkable is the space offered by the Vip cabin that, slightly raised and positioned in the bow, accommodates another king-sized bed as well as abundant spaces and high-level finishes of the same level as the master cabin.

Joining in the bow on a single central corridor, side-decks give access to these two lateral sun pads that manage to offer uninterrupted horizons and fabulous landscapes.

Equipped with a huge amount of sofas (each with its specific intended use), it will be the most frequented place both during sailing and at night when, inevitably, it will end up welcoming the most glamorous events of the whole bay.
