RYA Recogised Training Centre

The Lymington Town Sailing Club is a Royal Yachting Association (RYA) Training Centre offering dinghy sailing, powerboat and shore-based theory courses.

Our courses follow the RYA scheme for Dinghy Sailing and Power Boating. Coaching is provided by our experienced RYA qualified instructors who are familiar with the local sailing area. They have an enthusiastic but relaxed approach to their sport and a wealth of knowledge to impart.

We offer a wide range of practical courses and tuition in dinghy sailing for all ages from 8 years upwards.  Our power boat courses start from the age of 12yrs.

Training takes place in the sheltered waters of Lymington River and creeks protected by the Lymington Marshes.

Adult Dinghy Courses

Level 1 & 2 Course - 1.jpg

The LTSC Dinghy Sailing courses take place in the club’s RS Vision and RS Quest sailing dinghies.

Both boats allow the instructor to sail with the students, to provide close quarters help and support. The Club also use single handed dinghies, which allow more helm time.

RYA Start Sailing (Level 1)

The Start Sailing course is designed for those with little or no sailing experience. Learning to sail is through practical demonstrations and individual coaching. Our aim is to develop, skills enabling trainees to sail under supervision, around a triangular course in light winds.

RYA Better Sailing (Level 2)

Moving up to Level 2 is where the fun begins and you really start to be confident in your dinghy. Manoeuvres will be perfected, and you will develop your skills on all points of sailing. Extra skills are completed enabling you to be totally in control.

We also offer the more advanced courses.  Please enquire here .

Powerboat Courses

RYA POWERBOAT LEVEL 2 COURSE (2).jpg

RYA courses are delivered on two consecutive days.

Example Programme

The below programme is an indication of how your course may be structured - please be aware that this is an example only and many factors may influence this including weather and candidate progress. On day one you will be welcomed into our club house with a tour and enjoy meeting your instructor and other course attendees. You will receive a safety brief before being introduced to the boat and the kit onboard. The instructor will take the boat into a safe space and quickly give you the chance to have your first go on the helm! By lunchtime you will understand how the wind and tide affect the boat and have tried basic manuevers including mooring to a buoy. After lunch we will cover confined space turning, and have plenty of opportunities to practice mooring on a pontoon. Everyone gets stuck in with the different roles onboard.

Day two will start with slightly longer ashore, with an introduction to the rules of the road and navigation. You will then put these skills into practice by executing your own passage plan and explore our section of the Western Solent. Keep an eye out for Hurst Castle, Yarmouth and Portsmouth - all can be spotted in the distance on a good day. After coming back ashore for lunch we will practice anchoring and practice some emergency procedures afloat - a great opportunity to put your newfound skills to practice!

What Makes Our Training So Great?

"olli was a brilliant instructor. personable and patient he taught the course in simple, easy to understand language. he assessed his pupils quickly to deliver the course with the right balance of professionalism and fun that we were clearly looking for.", "we wanted to thank the instructors for teaching us about powerboats this weekend. we felt we learnt a great deal, although as with all things, the more you know the more you realise there is to learn we both enjoyed it enormously and are looking forward to practising...maybe when the weather is a little warmer", "i have completed the pb2 course and i would just like to pass on my thanks to the instructors who ran a very professional and informative course. all of the instructors were calm, reassuring and patient and i would certainly recommend them to friends", "brilliant day, practiced so much, heaps of thanks given me much more confidence to volunteer when my son sails in the tera fleet on saturdays.", our equipment.

We have a varied fleet of powerboats including RIBs, a launch, tiller steered Rigiflexs, and a Cheetah Marine multihull. Haven Jubilee is our go to boat for most powerboat courses. Our Facilities

Our clubhouse sits right on the waters edge- it is possible to walk out the classroom door and be on the water in seconds! We have a large pontoon where we store most of our sailing dinghies, with an innovative floating slipway to launch them without having to get wet. It also provides a great space to tie boats up to for lunch limiting the amount of times you have to pull them up the slipway!

Our Sailing Area

We have access to some of the best sailing areas on the South Coast. The sheltered lakes provide a great space to take to the water for the first time and the Western Solent provides a more challenging area for those looking to push themselves.

Our Instructors

Our instructors provide a friendly welcome and bring a wealth of experience to the club. We really couldn't do it without them!

We welcome new members including experienced sailors and those new to the water.

We host regular keelboat and dinghy racing, plus club, class, national and international regattas

PILOT: MILES JENNINGS

Miles Jennings is a master of racing. It's in his blood. Inherited from his father who raced Norton motorbikes and with his own passion for speed – it has seen Miles collect three world titles, the Harmsworth Cup and smash numerous speed records.

Behind the racer, there's a savvy businessman. Miles is the co-owner of Stovac and a group of ceramic companies. Many of the products can be found in the kitchens and bathrooms of footballers and celebrities. It's this success that gives Miles the opportunity to continue his passion within the Powerboat P1 series.

From 16 years old, Miles has been competing on the water, racing whatever boat he could afford at the time just to get his fix. Through out his life, it seems to appear that there's not much that Miles hasn't put through its paces on the water. In 2010, he'll take on a new role as pilot for Racing Silverline. Miles conveys an optimistic air for this year and is excited about the boat and his role within the team.

A self proclaimed adrenalin junkie, it's not often you'll find this pilot sat around collecting dust. When he's not in the boat preparing to race he can be caught tearing up the pistes or catching thermals for some kite-boarding action. His Playboy image mixed with the racing danger and overwhelming enthusiasm for his sport, has often had him compared to F1 legend, James Hunt. It's taken as a compliment and why wouldn't it be?

Miles tells us that it's a special breed that take on the calculated risk to get their kicks – Miles himself has slammed into a harbour wall at 100mph, sunk and rolled many a boat but nothing has put him off returning for more. After tales of such drama at sea, you may expect him to be intense, but he has a charismatic charm and laid back manor that seems to take it all in his stride. On a lighter side he continues to tell us that he's even raced dressed as a pantomime horse in front of Princess Anne and had to be rescued from a sinking boat while dressed as a nun!

A rock fan with AC/DC on replay admits Miles, but was keen to also mention his attendance of Global Gathering and history of mixing it up in the heart of clubland, Ibiza. It seems whatever Miles is doing, be it sport or music, it's full on, fast paced and at 100mph.

PILOT: IAN BLACKER
