The charter fee generally covers only the hire of the yacht and crew, all other expenses are in addition to the charter fee. These additional expenses are covered by the Advance Provisioning Allowance.The APA is usually 30% of the charter fee (sometimes 35% if the yacht burns a lot of fuel or if you intend to do more than about 4 hours of cruising per day).The APA covers the cost of fuel, food, wines and liquors, dockage, communications, etc. Any APA not used will be returned to you at the end of the charter as you leave. On the other hand, if expenses exceed the APA (maybe excessive cruising so high fuel costs, requests of rare liquors, etc.) you will be expected to reimburse the yacht as you leave the charter. This is rare but you need to be aware of this possible expense.

Description

This flybridge cruiser debuted in 2013 in Southampton. It has a distinctive case, designed not only to planing, but at a economical displacement speed. In the development of the Princess 88 solutions were applied, used on a 40-metre superyacht Princess: luxury vessel equipped with a folding balcony, which turns the section of the bulwarks, and provided customers with choice of layout on four or five guest cabins with separate bathrooms. Equipped with the powerful engines of the yacht Princess 88 shows a higher top speed plus due to the "hybrid" body and stabilizing gear allows you to move comfortably on the restless sea at low speeds.

A magical few days on board Boats.co.uk’s latest Princess 88 charter vessel gives Hugo a glimpse of just how special a charter holiday can be.

Given the number of boats we write about in MBY , it might come as a surprise how rarely we get to enjoy them as they’re meant to be enjoyed.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s still a pleasure and privilege to sea trial all those fabulous craft but most of the time that involves running up and down a familiar stretch of British coastline measuring speed, noise and fuel consumption while taking notes and making sure the photographer gets the photos and video we need.

Cruising somewhere just for the sake of it is a rare luxury, let alone eating or sleeping on board or, heaven forbid, having friends and family to share those experiences with.

But every now and again we get a brief chance to pull back the curtain and immerse ourselves in the kind of boating that we spend most of our days dreaming about. So when an email dropped into my inbox inviting us to spend a few days on board Boats.co.uk ’s latest charter boat J4 , a Princess 88 based in Palma Mallorca, I felt it was my journalistic duty to take one for the team!

And given that no paying guest would ever choose to share their precious holiday time with a mere scribbler, I am even allowed to fill the other seven beds with family and friends so that I can get a taste of the full ‘charter experience’. Needless to say, I never knew I had so many friends keen to show-off their boating skills!

I can’t say the run-up to our four-day booking at the beginning of July was entirely relaxing. Rising Covid rates in both the UK and Spain and constant changes in travel rules and testing regulations, not to mention the risk of being pinged by the dreaded NHS app meant we never truly relaxed until we were all safely on the plane.

Once we’d worked out how to fill out the various Spanish health forms and show our vaccination passes it was no different to any other flight, but stepping onto foreign soil after 18 months of lockdowns, it all felt strangely illicit, like we were a bunch of schoolkids bunking off school for a few days.

Princess 88 charter costs

A week on J4 for up to 8 people costs €49,000 inclusive of Spanish IVA tax. You will also be asked to pay an additional Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA) for fuel, food, drinks, visitor berths, communications and guest requests.

APA is charged at 30% of the total charter cost with any under or overpayment settled at the end of the charter. This does not include a crew tip, typically of around 10%.

Princess 88 -an elegant and efficient popular pocket superyacht

The concept of a 'pocket superyacht' has been around for a while, but few have really had great appeal or stood the test of time. Princess has joined this movement and is forging ahead with new designs, updating its fleet to meet the demands of today's discerning owners reaching top speeds that are expected to be reached with smaller engines, therefore ticking the boxes for a more environmentally friendly boat that takes less of a hit on your wallet.

The wow factor on this yacht has to be the superb top deck, complete with opening roof, which echoes the sophistication and style of the al fresco living area on her bigger sister the Princess 40M .

Inspiration

Much of the improvements in this modern Princess is due to what the builder describes as the “all-new infused long-range hull.” The hybrid deep-V hull design was developed thanks to lessons learned from the World Superyacht Award-winning Princess 40M .

Construction

The 88 replaces Princess’s 85 Motor Yacht, which had a hand-laid hull. Adopting resin infusion gives 10 percent more volume over the 85 yet achieves the same speed with the same engines.

Exterior styling

Designs can often be too chunky with a too-high superstructure or over-designed to squeeze in more accommodations than realistically works. As the next generation of long-range cruising yachts under 30 metres starts to emerge, it is clear that designers are getting a hold on how to incorporate volume into a boat to create a successful pocket superyacht with many features borrowed from larger yacht models.

Interior design The interior is very contemporary in style with new finishes covering everything from the walls to the furnishings: high-gloss lacquered panels, walnut, granite, marble and leather artwork. On this yacht the owner has opted for the fold-down veranda on the starboard side, which adds a whole new dimension to the saloon/dining area; it’s a fabulous place to perch while at anchor.

A curved staircase with laser-cut leather feature accents leads you down into the well-structured lower deck lobby, complete with a second washing machine and storage area for linens and towels. Forward is the very roomy VIP and two further cabins, which can be configured with a double or twins. The master is full beam and here you appreciate the huge windows that envelop the room with light. Personal touches abound such as the shagreen leather-covered dressing table, a drinks refrigerator, funky chairs and a marble-dressed bathroom with dual sinks and a bath where you can lounge in bubbles while looking out over the sea. A five-cabin version is also offered, and if you want to make further changes you can.

Outdoor living

The intelligent influence of the Princess 40M on the 88 is evident. The ratio of length to height is well executed; the hidden detail on the starboard topsides conceals a drop-down balcony; up top there is an elongated flybridge, complete with spa pool and all the trimmings for alfresco living; forward is a cozy, open-air sunken seating area and sunpads.

Engineering and performance

On boats of this size the engineering of crew accommodation is always tricky due to space constraints, but Princess has really worked on this and created an area that allows for servicing of the boat without displacing owner and guests. Aft below decks there is a captain’s cabin and room for two more crew, plus a small mess and washing machine and dryer. I particularly like the direct access to the roomy and well-laid-out engine room and the starboard side deck access, so crew can go about their business without tramping through the saloon. Performance from the Caterpillar C32 A engines was listed at 27-28 knots maximum speed.

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.

Welcome to Portland Yacht Club

Portland Yacht Club is Oregon’s oldest yacht club and was founded in 1908 as the Willamette Motor Boat Club, and remains today as the premier club in the greater Portland area.   Located on NE Marine Drive on the banks of the Columbia River, the club offers open moorage for sailboats, boathouses for powerboats, and open docks for both.  The moorage facilities include private fuel dock and pump-out station. Club members have access to the Willow Bar Outstation located 12 miles downstream on Sauvie Island.   The Clubhouse facilities include the outdoor patio, main bar, grand ballroom and adjacent dining room with food and beverage service offered six days a week.  In addition, the club’s frequent activities include a full range of events, many of which are family oriented.
