Should any one be interested, the Royal Southern Yacht Club in Hamble is looking for a Bosun for the summer months. You'd need to be qualified and have either Yacht Master or Coastal Skipper. Might be ideal for a retired person with a pleasant disposition.

"yacht master or coastal skipper" just what you need in a Bosun.  

I had a girlfriend whoes dad was a member,bit above my station but the sandwiches where good.

The Southern is a great sailing club with lots going on on the water, from kids in dinghies to big boys in proper yachts, so I would guess that the club bosuns have a pretty varied job spec. A regular part of the work is running members up and down the Hamble in the club launches to get to moored yachts out in the river. Boat handling skills definitely needed!  

Duties for Bosun I posted this because I thought someone looking for some work may appreciate the opportunity. The last two posters pretty well sum up what the role is about. It is primarily driving one of the two club launches taking people out to their boats and other allied maintenance duties. Qualifications are now required because the launches have to be coded as it is deemed a commercial operation as they transport people other than members. As has been pointed out, the Southern is a large and very successful Yacht Club based on the Hamble River. The club has a substantial membership with many pontoon moorings, crane and dry sailing for SB20s and J80s. Many members have their own Harbour Board moorings which the club launch enables them to get to. Anyone interested would be best advised to phone the club on 023 8045 0300 or www.royal-southern.co.uk and contact the Sailing Secretary who will explain all. Don't get the beer token comment nor some of the others!

Grants from Royal Southern Yacht Club Trust

Applications

We are inviting applications for grants to assist in sailing ambitions.

The grants which will be awarded in November 2024 are for activities during 2024/25. Applications must be received by 1st November 2024.

The Royal Southern Yacht Club’s charitable trust is again inviting applications for grants to assist applicants in their sailing ambitions. The grants which will be awarded in March for use during the same year.

The Trust was set up following a bequest by Club member Sir Michael Cobham and is a charity designed to support recreation in general and sailing in particular. It makes grants available within four categories:

• Young people wishing to take part in training or youth development activities including qualifying regattas.
• Disadvantaged people, for example, those who are disabled or not earning.
• Taking part in Tall Ships or other offshore voyages.
• Participation in Class or RYA-recognised championships.

Applications are welcomed from all, whether a Club Member or not.

Because of increasing demand for grants, we are more likely to fund applications that are more local to us in Hampshire and the region than from further afield.

The Joining Process

Complete our ONLINE APPLICATION FORM

You may ask two existing Members of at least two years standing to propose and second you. Both the Proposer and Seconder must have been personally acquainted with you for at least six months. If you do not have a Proposer and Seconder, a member of the Sailing Committee will contact you to arrange an introductory meeting (often online) and the Executive Committee will approve your membership after six months. You can use and enjoy all the facilities of the Club in the meantime.

Members in the above categories who reside continuously outside the British Isles will pay 50% of the relevant age category – excluding Academy

• Joining Fee will be agreed and set by the Executive Committee from time to time
• Membership age categories relate to the age of the Primary Subscription Holder on the 1st September for the forthcoming year
• An additional Spouse/ Partner will pay the same age related rate applicable to them. Their children under 17 are free. The 8 – 17 rate is for every child of a Single Parent who are full Members, or for Junior Members joining in their own right. Children under 8 are free.
