27 Of The Best Things To Do In Sag Harbor, New York

' src=

The Hamptons’ most charming and laid-back spot is definitely the village of Sag Harbor. It’s often described as “family-friendly” or the “least ‘Hampton-y’ of the Hamptons.”

Either way, it’s clear the hamlet has managed to hold on to a distinctive charm amid regular Hamptons hoopla.

Established in the early 1700’s and located on the north end of Suffolk County’s South Fork, this one-time whaling port has a rich history evident still today.

I spent a year living in Sag Harbor, and regularly return to visit family. If you’re planning a visit and are unsure what to do, I’ve listed out some of my favorites below. Read on for the top things to do in Sag Harbor, New York!

Table of Contents

The Best Things To Do In Sag Harbor, New York

  • Sag Harbor Whaling & Historical Museum

Sag Harbor Whaling & Historical Museum is dedicated to the whaling industry which shaped the town’s past. Sag Harbor was once one of the largest whaling ports in the United States. In fact, the town is even mentioned in Herman Melville’s famed book, Moby Dick .

Here you’ll find artifacts of the area’s history and the largest collection of whaling equipment in the state of New York.

The museum is located in a beautiful 1845 home once owned by whaling ship owner Benjamin Huntting II.

If you enjoy museums and historical buildings be sure to also check out the Sag Harbor Historical Society or the Custom House Museum. Both are located just steps from the Sag Harbor Whaling & Historical Museum.

Check Out The Yachts From Long Wharf In Sag Harbor Yacht Yard

The calm waters of Sag Harbor Bay make for a great spot to dock boats.

Sag Harbor Yacht Yard was first established in 1797 as Rysam’s Boat Yard and originally served as a fishing and, you guessed it, whaling port. Today it’s more known for mega yachts and sailboats which can be spotted here all summer.

Long Wharf is centrally located in the village, just steps from lively restaurants and excellent boutique shops, making it one of the favorite things to do in Sag Harbor. It’s also a fantastic spot to watch the sunset!

While you can stroll the harbor any time of year, the boats are best from late April into early October.

Grab some ice cream from Big Olaf’s while you walk the waterfront. It’s cash only and the line gets long but it’s worth the wait!

Charter A Sailboat

Interested in chartering a boat yourself?

While visiting the east end of Long Island enjoy a catamaran, sailboat, or yacht with friends. You can choose between touring the area or simply doing a quick sunset cruise. No matter how you hit the water a boat ride is definitely one of the best things to do in Sag Harbor.

There are a number of charter options available through Sag Harbor Charters , American Beauty Cruises & Charters , and Sailacat .

If sailing lessons are more your speed you’ll like Sag Harbor Sailing .

Explore The Village Of Sag Harbor

One of the top things to do in Sag Harbor is to simply stroll Main Street and admire the historic buildings and homes.

The town has a picture-perfect Main Street adjacent to the waterfront. Imagine stylish boutique and antique shops mixed in with a supermarket, hardware store, and historic theater. Storefronts are lined with flowers and American flags, it’s all incredibly charming.

Historic Sites In Sag Harbor

Sag Harbor has a ton of beautiful historic buildings, most within walking distance of each other.

While browsing the village be sure to check out:

  • Sag Harbor Old Jail House
  • Broken Mast Monument
  • Custom House
  • Sag Harbor Library
  • The Windmill
  • The Old Whaler’s Church

Shop Main Street In Sag Harbor

While enjoying the Village of Sag Harbor, many will find themselves shopping. Here, instead of designer brands, you’ll find more locally owned and down to earth shops.

I particularly enjoy the women’s boutique shops and home decor stores in Sag Harbor.

Tip: If designer shopping is more your thing, head to the villages of East Hampton or Southampton. Both are just a few miles away and make for an easy day trip.

Popular Sag Harbor Shops:

  • The Wharf Shop
  • Fishers Home Furnishings
  • Sag Harbor Books
  • Onda Beauty
  • Joey Wölffer
  • Sylvester & Co. Modern General
  • LoveShackFancy
  • Faherty Sag Harbor
  • Flying Point

Additionally, keep an eye out for pop-up shops throughout Sag Harbor and the Hamptons. It’s common for big name brands to have summer-only shops throughout the area.

Vintage Shops & Antiquing

In general, the Hamptons are known for excellent antique shops, and Sag Harbor just so happens to be one of the best. I’m not talking musty hand-me-downs — think rare and lightly used instead. You never know what you’ll find here!

With a mix of clothing, accessories, furniture, and home decor available, shopping for vintage gems will keep you very busy in Sag Harbor!

Visit The Beach In Sag Harbor

Sag Harbor is located on the northern side of the South Fork, facing Noyack Bay. The beaches here are a bit rocky and are very calm compared to the nearby Atlantic coastline.

The town’s main beach is Long Beach (or Foster Memorial Beach). It’s on a thin strip of land alongside a roadway connecting Noyack to North Haven.

This beach is perfect for families. The calm, warm water is always popular for kids and adults alike.

Tip: For true sandy beaches (and waves) you’ll want to head to the Atlantic shore. Popular oceanfront beaches near Sag Harbor are Sagg Main Beach, Cooper’s Beach, or Ditch Plains Beach.

Important Tips For A Beach Day In Sag Harbor

The beaches here are a bit complicated, regulations vary in different areas, some rules change on the weekend, etc. The below information will give you an idea of these regulations, but be sure to research the exact beach you plan to visit.

There are private, residential, and public beaches around the Hamptons. Private and residential beaches are obviously off limits for most.

The public beaches are free and open to anyone, however it’s very difficult to get parking passes. Passes are prioritized for residents and need to be purchased before the season begins. Some beaches have daily parking passes, even including Long Beach , which I mentioned above. Beaches which offer daily passes usually cost $30/day.

Just because you don’t have a parking pass doesn’t mean you can’t go to the beach. Public beaches are still free and accessible to anyone without a parking pass. However, you will need to walk, bike, or be dropped off.

When To Visit The Beach

Most beaches are open year-round from sunrise to sunset.

The beaches are most crowded from July 1st – Labor Day. If visiting on weekends during this stretch I recommend arriving by 10 am to snag a good spot.

Trust me it’s worth getting an early start, the beaches here are incredible.

Kayak Or Stand Up Paddle Board

One of the best things to do in Sag Harbor is kayaking or stand up paddle boarding. This is thanks to persistently calm waters surrounding the area. Paddling can be great work out and also allows you to appreciate the beauty of nature from a unique perspective.

If needed, check out Weekend Warrior Tours in Sag Harbor Village which offers full or half day rentals.

Sag Harbor Cinema

Sag Harbor Cinema is a beloved historic building in the heart of downtown Sag Harbor. Founded in 1920, it’s one of the oldest continuously ran screens in Eastern Long Island.

The much-loved, and recently renovated movie theater presents a mix of classics, documentaries, and new releases.

While you’re here be sure to buy some popcorn from Billy Joel’s popcorn machine. The machine was named after the famous singer thanks to his generous donations which, among others, helped restore the theater following a fire in December 2016.

The Green Room Bar

Sag Harbor Cinema also has a rooftop bar called the Green Room. The modern terrace has excellent views of Sag Harbor Village and occasional live music. It’s definitely worth stopping by.

You can access the bar with your movie ticket or theater membership.

Bay Street Theater & Sag Harbor Center For The Arts

Prefer live shows? Bay Street is a local theater which hosts comedy, live music, theater performances, and events for the local community.

The theater has hosted productions by both established and up-and-coming artists, and has featured performers such as Alec Baldwin, Mercedes Ruehl, and Joy Behar.

In addition to regular programming, Bay Street Theater is also committed to providing educational opportunities for local students and artists. The theater offers a variety of classes and workshops throughout the year, as well as summer camps for children.

Check out their event schedule here: Bay Street Theater Shows & Events

Sip Wine At Wölffer Estate Vineyard

Wölffer is the place to kick back and sip vino among the grapevines. Plan to spend an afternoon enjoying their summer rosé, live music, and charcuterie boards. This popular vineyard screams summer and is one of the most quintessential Hamptons experiences.

The vineyard offers a wide variety of wines, ciders (their dry rose cider is my favorite!), spirits, and even a few non-alcoholic wines.

Tasting and tour options need to be reserved in advance and can be arranged online.

On Friday and Saturdays throughout summer they host free live concerts during sunset at The Wine Stand at Wölffer Estate. The free event is always a good time and reservations are not required.

Note: Looking for the nearest vineyard to Sag Harbor? Wölffer Estate and Channing Daughters Winery are closest, each about 3.5 miles away. Check out my guide, Best Wineries In The Hamptons , for information regarding which is best for you!

Elizabeth A. Morton National Wildlife Refuge

Just west of Sag Harbor Village is a peninsula turned 187 acre preserve. The park protects coastline, salt marshes, and forest. These are diverse habitats which are essential for the area’s wildlife, especially beach-nesting birds.

Hike the 1.2 mile Wild Birds Nature Trail through woodland areas and onto the beach, or follow the beach for almost two miles along Jessup’s Neck Peninsula.

Visiting the Elizabeth A. Morton National Wildlife Refuge is just a few dollars per vehicle. The park is open daily from sunrise to sunset.

The Church & Art Galleries In Sag Harbor

If you appreciate art you’ll enjoy the many galleries throughout Main Street and the village.

The Church art center is especially worth seeing if you have the time. It’s an exposition space, innovation center, and public garden founded by artists Eric Fischl and April Gornik.

In addition to exhibits, the gallery also hosts special events such as artist talks, film screenings, and more.

Exhibitions are free to all. The gallery does close between exhibits so keep an eye on their website before heading out: The Church – Sag Harbor .

Live Music At Baron’s Cove

Baron’s Cove is popular for locals and visitors alike. This is thanks to the year-round live music, stunning views of the harbor, delicious cocktails, and overall lively crowd. This is one of the favorite things to do in Sag Harbor!

Be sure to get here early if you wish to snag a good seat.

Mashashimuet Park

Want to take a walk around the park? Let the kids run loose on a play ground? Hit the tennis court? Mashashimuet Park is the place for you. This is the town’s main park and a perfect place to find some space to yourself.

Mashashimuet Park is located about a mile from Sag Harbor Village, open sunrise to sunset, and free to all visitors.

Kidd Squid Brewing Company

Kidd Squid Brewing Company in Sag Harbor is a craft brewery located in the heart of the village.

The brewery offers a wide selection of craft beer styles ranging from IPAs to stouts, as well as seasonal beers. In addition to their handcrafted beers, they also serves up local wines, liquors, non-alcoholic beverages, and bar snacks.

Enjoy a drink on their patio or check out special events such as tap takeovers or live music.

Free Concerts At Marine Park

On Thursdays throughout summer Sag Harbor hosts free concerts at Marine Park. Each week hosts different bands of varying genres.

Grab a blanket and lawn chairs, plus your closest friends for a night of free live music in Sag Harbor.

Marine Park is located off Bay Street, just steps from Main Street and Long Wharf.

I have yet to find a website with event information. However, there are usually signs around town advertising the shows.

John Steinbeck Waterfront Park

Also located just steps from Main Street in Sag Harbor is John Steinbeck Waterfront Park.

This green space overlooks the marina, so it’s a great spot to view the luxury boats which dock here. It’s also a lovely location to watch the sunset.

The park has a few picnic benches, plus plenty of green space to let the little ones run around.

Festivals & Events In Sag Harbor

Sag Harbor hosts a variety of festivals and events throughout the year. Many of which reflect its rich history, artistic community, and maritime heritage.

Some of the most popular annual events in Sag Harbor include:

  • Sag Harbor American Musical Festival
  • Sag Harbor Fire Department Carnival
  • Hamptons International Film Festival
  • HarborFrost

Day Trip To Montauk

Montauk is situated on the far east tip of the South Fork about 30 – 45 minutes from Sag Harbor. It’s known for surfers, laid-back beaches, delicious food, and rowdy nightlife. The town is very compact so it’s easy to park your car in one spot and explore the area for the day.

Tip: You must stop at The Lobster Roll (LUNCH) for a bite to eat on your way to Montauk. This relaxed restaurant has been a Hamptons staple since the 60’s. It’s located right off Montauk Highway, just look for the giant “LUNCH” sign, you can’t miss it.

The Best Things To Do In Montauk:

  • Watch the surfers at Ditch Plains Beach.
  • Browse the local shops.
  • Catch a live show at The Surf Club Resort.
  • Tour Montauk Point Lighthouse.

Day Trip To Shelter Island

Shelter Island is just half a mile from North Haven but only accessible via ferry.

On the island you can lounge at Wade’s Beach, grab a bite to eat at Shelter Island Slice or Marie Eiffel Market and browse boutique shops.

Up for some adventure? Go for a hike in Mashomack Preserve or join a kayak tour.

How To Get From Sag Harbor To Shelter Island

The South Ferry runs daily between North Haven and Shelter Island from about 6 am to midnight. The 10 minute ferry’s same-day round trip rates are $20 for vehicles or $3 for pedestrians ($6 if you bring your bike).

Once you arrive, the island is best explored by car or bicycle (if you’re up for a lot of biking).

Day Trip To To Greenport

Prefer to head to the North Fork? I recommend visiting Greenport!

This charming village has an adorable downtown area right on the water, plus it’s within close proximity to beaches and the area’s ample wineries.

To access Greenport you’ll need to take the ferry from North Haven to Shelter Island, drive across Shelter Island, then ferry from Shelter Island to Greenport. The ferry rides are very short, the whole process takes about 45 minutes to an hour each way.

Things To Do In Sag Harbor During Winter

Winter is a great time to visit the Hamptons if you’re looking for a quieter experience. During the colder months you’ll find the traffic isn’t as hectic, the beaches are empty, and the hotel rates are relatively inexpensive.

The downside is that many shops and restaurants shut down this time of year.

However , Sag Harbor is less seasonal than other Hamptons towns, so you’re likely to have a good time here no matter the season.

Below are some of the best things to do in Sag Harbor during winter:

  • Put on your warmest winter jacket and stroll the empty beaches.
  • Snag a deal at a designer shop, it’s not uncommon to find clearance prices come winter months.
  • Go ice skating at Buckskill Winter Club or Southampton Ice Rink.
  • Listen to live music at Baron’s Cove.
  • Enjoy Sag Harbor’s HarborFrost festival in early February.

What To Wear In Sag Harbor

Sag Harbor is a relaxed beach town and the attire here reflects that. Timeless summer garments such as cotton pieces, maxi dresses, linen sets, and classic prints, like polkadots or nautical stripes, are always perfect for summer in Sag Harbor.

While you do want to get dressed up for dinner, wine tastings, or a popular event, you probably don’t need to get  as  dressed up as you imagine. The Hamptons style is elegant yet laid-back, especially so in Sag Harbor which has held on to its family-friendly vibe.

For more ideas, including what to wear to the beach or a wine tasting, check out What To Wear In The Hamptons .

Is Sag Harbor Worth Visiting?

If you’re looking for a more relaxed Hamptons experience, good food, boutique and antique shops, as well as prime harbor views, then Sag Harbor is definitely worth visiting.

What Is Sag Harbor Famous For?

Sag Harbor is a village in the Hamptons known for its whaling history and family-friendly vibe. It’s one of the most unique Hamptons towns in that its downtown is set on the water and surrounded by mega yachts in the summer months.

The town has held on to its historic charm despite the throngs of rich and famous who head to the area each summer.

Sag Harbor was the first official port of entry to the United States and the very first custom home in the U.S. was built here back in 1770.

A Brief History of the Sag Harbor Yacht Club

The Sag Harbor Yacht Club, one of the 100 oldest yacht clubs in America, is located on the South Fork of the East End of Long Island, New York.  The small waterfront village of Sag Harbor, home of the Sag Harbor Yacht Club, has a rich and colorful maritime history dating back to approximately 1700.  Sailing, shipping, fishing and whaling all contributed to the early tapestry of “The Harbor”.  One of the original two U.S. Ports of Entry, the other being New York City, The Sag Harbor Customs House was, along with its counterpart in NYC, a major source of revenue for the newly formed United States Federal Government.

Never having lost sight of its past, today Sag Harbor is a charming, vibrant village that has maintained a warm and friendly character.  The center of town boasts many fine shops, banks and restaurants.  The extensive and active waterfront area has a mix of marine facilities, yacht clubs, restaurants, parks and municipal facilities.  The picturesque harbor has mooring fields both within and outside of the protective breakwater.  Beyond the jetty are Shelter Island Sound, North Haven and Shelter Island.  With its Historical District, a good amount of the residential area of the Village still exhibits its rich architectural lineage.  Its small town atmosphere, churches, library, whaling museum, and parks, all add to its appeal.

The beginnings of local recreational sailing were first noted in our local newspaper, The Sag Harbor Express, in late August 1879.  The first mention of competitive sailboat racing here dates back to 1886 with 34 boats in regatta on September 14th of that year.  There were two “fleets” sailing in Sag Harbor at that time.  They were “the cove fleet” for smaller boats and “the harbor fleet” for larger vessels.  The members of the cove fleet founded “The Volunteer Boat Club” on August 15, 1887.  The name “Volunteer” may have been chosen for the America’s Cup defender that year, which had the same name. The Volunteer Boat Club would last until 1899, when The Sag Harbor Yacht Club received its charter from the State of New York. On March 17TH, 1897, a meeting was held at the Astor House in New York City to found a new yacht club.  Members of the two local sailing fleets joined ranks and formed “The Sag Harbor Yacht Club”.  The new club boasted nineteen members that first year.  The incorporation and chartering followed in 1899.  The Mission Statement, in part, was “…. to purchase or acquire property and erect and maintain a house for the use of Club members and their friends, and, to further and promote interest in all branches of yachting, yacht racing and yacht building…”  Also in 1899, a 100 foot long dock was constructed near the bridge that joins Sag Harbor to North Haven.  In 1902 “a waiting room structure” was added to the dock.  This would be “home” to The Sag Harbor Yacht Club until 1913.

The long awaited jetty, that would shelter the Bay Street area from northeast storms, was federally funded in 1902.  Construction began that year and was completed six years later.  With Bay Street protected by the new jetty, our yacht club could now look for a permanent home.  Through the generosity of Frank Havens, two lots, on Bay Street, were deeded over to the Club and have, to this day, been our home location.   In 1913 the main dock was built on that site.  In 1914 our present day clubhouse was purchased from The New York Yacht Club.  It had been their Station #5 located on Shelter Island.  It was then barged to Sag Harbor and installed on our dock, as the new SHYC Clubhouse.  Rich with history and a survivor of many infamous storms, including the ’38 Hurricane, and, more recently, Hurricane Sandy, this same clubhouse proudly stands on our dock to this very day. Club activities waned during WWI, then recovered through the Twenties, and again, waned throughout the Depression and WWII.  During that period of time a major transition from sail to motor vessel took place.  As noted previously, our Club facilities were fortunate to survive a number of storms of historic proportion.  The Great Hurricane of 1938, many a nor’easter, the hurricanes of the Fifties and more.  Even with these weather setbacks, our Club expanded its main dock facilities, and, added its eastern dock.  The stage was set for growth as the yachting community “discovered” this haven on the East End.

With our history deeply entwined with local sailing, the Maycroft Cup is, once again, contested each fall.  In 1887, the Maycroft Cup was originated by the Volunteer Boat Club.  The VBC continued to hold the Maycroft Cup until 1899 when it was transferred to the Sag Harbor Yacht Club and the VBC was disbanded.  The SHYC then offered the Maycroft Cup through 1916.  With the onset of WWI, the Maycroft Cup races ended for eighty years, to be revived in 1997 by then Secretary / Treasurer & Club Historian Ron Lowe and the Club’s Regatta Committee.  It has again become a fixture on the East Ends’ active sailboat racing schedule. The Sag Harbor Yacht Club offers a number of social functions throughout the year.  We start in early May with our Club commissioning.  In June we have our marine information seminar.  Fourth of July brings our grand fireworks display to the Sag Harbor waterfront.    August is time for the always wonderful Commodore’s Ball.  Early September finds us on our annual Club Cruise Rendezvous to various destinations.  Late September is time for the Maycroft Cup Regatta, and after party on our docks.  There is certainly something for everyone fortunate enough to be called a “member”. Looking to the future, as the yachting community has begun a new century, surely the Sag Harbor Yacht Club is well positioned and ready to continue its legacy of excellence.   For over one hundred and fifteen years, Sag Harbor Yacht Club has served its members, provided hospitality to and welcomed the marine community, and has been a good neighbor in the local community.  We look forward to continuing our long established traditions. Welcome aboard.
