Berilda: The refitted Feadship with a colourful history

Snow and ice weren’t foremost on the minds of Berilda ’s owners when they first laid their eyes on a classic 38 metre Feadship for sale in the north-east US in 2015. “They had visions of sandy beaches and rosé and it turned out to be rattle guns and welding torches in Maine for a winter,” says the yacht’s captain, Jacob Ewing.

What the new owners anticipated would be “a paint job and a spruce up” on the pedigreed steel yacht they had just purchased turned into the first 14-month phase of a major multi-yard superyacht refit project .

A second three-month refit period took place at the Rybovich yard in Palm Beach this year, after a shakedown cruise from Maine to Grenada in 2017, during which the owners got to enjoy their yacht and make plans for further updates.

A large chunk of the work was carried out at Front Street Shipyard in Belfast, Maine, where the yacht had been hauled for the survey. Front Street Shipyard is a relatively young yard with a new build division and several refits to its credit. Although it was a long way for them to travel, Ewing says the yacht’s owners liked the idea of keeping a small town employed. What they did not expect was how long Berilda would remain in Maine.

The survey had overlooked issues deep within the older lady’s underbelly. Brought on board to supervise the refit, Ewing had candid conversations with the owners. Hull problems had been fixed with double plating in some areas, “essentially a ‘Band-Aid.’ We replaced nine metres of steel at the stern,” says Ewing, who sent samples of steel to match with the modern-day metal.

Worst of all, the yacht was not safe to cruise. “There was no bilge system, no fire system on the boat that functioned,” the captain says. “We worked out a list and prioritised things based on safety, functionality and cosmetics.”

The owners and the captain came up with a plan for a several-phase refit, making time for them to enjoy the boat between yard periods. “Basically she’d been let go,” says Kristine Williams, who owns the yacht with her husband and is handling the redesign.

“Bringing back an old boat has to be a labour of love,” Ewing says, and it seems like the new owners have plenty to give. The news may not have been what they wanted to hear, but they delved deep into the project, determined to make Berilda safe.

“Even if we had been disappointed and wanted to sell, you don’t sell a boat that is unseaworthy,” Williams says. But they also saw an opportunity to make the layout work better for their family and eventual guests and committed to bring back the steel and aluminium yacht’s beautiful and occasionally colourful past.

The yacht was delivered in 1978 to E Clayton Gengras, a self-made millionaire who built his empire by selling cars, beginning with the Stutz Bearcat before World War II. He named the Feadship, designed by De Voogt Naval Architects , Claybeth in honour of his daughters and used her primarily for family and to entertain political friends in Connecticut.

One of those friends was Malcolm Forbes who bought the vessel a few years later. As Highlander IV , the yacht entertained some notable names. Princess Margaret, sister of Queen Elizabeth II, once attended a party on board. Forbes sold the boat four years after buying it, because as he reputedly told one guest, “the ashtrays are full.”

Smoking on board was permissible but it was subject to strict rules. Berilda ’s current captain found standing orders from that period. “It says no smoking in the main saloon; smoking in bunkrooms after 6pm prohibited. It’s definitely dated, but it’s the time when smoking was allowed on airlines — it’s a bit of a trip,” he says.

Over the years, the yacht was also known as Sharon S , The Virginian , Lady Allison and Sirenuse . As Sirenuse , she underwent a yearlong refit in 2004 in anticipation of far-flung trips in the Pacific Ocean with a family and teachers. At that time a larger bunkroom for the kids and a small darkroom were added.

On a more colourful note, daredevil Evel Knievel once chartered the vessel, making about $50,000 worth of unauthorised charges, according to Evel Incarnate: The Life and Legend of Evel Knievel by Steve Mandich, and blamed his behaviour on the painkillers he was taking when the charter company sued him.

While they are respectful of the history, the owners did not want a museum feel or a jarring modern interior that would disagree with this Feadship’s classic looks. One of Berilda ’s great assets is that her successive care-takers made no changes to her exterior styling, which is authentically graceful.

With her new steel plating and efficient slow churning Caterpillars, she proved to be the great little ship her new owners had wanted — incredibly solid and steady. During their shakedown cruise, however, the original Vosper stabilisers started acting up. “We ran three-fourths of the season on one fin, and did St Vincent and Grenadines all the way back up without stabilisers. I am happy to be redoing the system, but that it was feasible is a testament of how solid they built the boat in those days,” Ewing says.

Berilda 's owners decided that they wanted to replace the system with brand new Quantum fins and to redo the bridge, which had been left alone in the first yard period. Back in Florida, the captain went to Rybovich to discuss retrofitting the new stabilisers. When the yard told him the work would take around 15 weeks, the owners decided to check several more items off their to-do list.

Back on the hard in August, Berilda was once again opened up. “At the moment the engine room is almost empty, except for the two old Cats,” Williams said when we spoke in early October. In addition to the stabilisers and the new electronics in a bridge designed in keeping with the boat’s older style, a new shore power system was added. In the interior, a VIP bathroom, the galley, the crew heads and the captain’s cabin were all gutted, redesigned and rebuilt, again in a way that respects the yacht’s heritage.

“We are taking care of all the underpinning that will make her super safe, so what we really are doing is stuffing her with the latest technology, but what my husband and I love are the classic lines and the feel of an older boat — one that has tons of character,” she says. “There are a number of lovely yachts out there and obviously huge ones, just gorgeous, but we wanted something for us, for our family.”

François van Well from Rybovich, who for many years was a director at Feadship, says: “It is rewarding to work on a project that has history, with new owners who recognise the legacy and carry on with it. The owner is basically doing all the interior decoration and design herself and she has a great sense of style. It’s a pleasant, family oriented boat, open and airy. It’s that family feel that really attracted us to the project.”

In addition to being a solid and graceful little ship, Berilda has great interior volume for her length. “If you wanted to rebuild this size boat today, you would have a lot less interior space because the new regulations have led walls to be thicker,” Van Well says. “There is a true benefit in restoring an older boat.”

Part of the extra space also has to do with what the captain calls “the old-style hull shape” and the refit’s improvements. For example, previous refits had added layers of materials over the original fabric-covered plywood overhead and the flooring. “We took apart everything and brought it back to the steel and aluminium, so we gained that overhead space back,” the captain says.

“There was a huge built-in cabinet that took the entire length of the saloon. We took that cabinet out to re-veneer the wall to match the rest of the boat and gained about four square metres of interior space, and we pulled out all the old air handler units, put in new ones and gained considerable interior volume.”

A good portion of the interior work went on during the 14 months at the Front Street Shipyard, including construction of the new on-deck master suite , a study and a full-size wine locker. “Their cabinetry and woodwork is amazing,” the captain says. “We made a China cabinet that acts as a partition that divides the salon and new main dining.”

A big part of the new design was to infuse Berilda with a new personality that fits the owners’ way of life. They had chartered many times before. “We did a lot of fun things and decorated her as we wanted,” says Williams, who has been picking out accessories and finishes for the boat during their travels.

“Our goal is for it to be elegantly casual,” she says. “My husband is a bit of wine nut, so we always have a lovely cellar, antique ice buckets and fun things to add to our pleasure and hopefully everyone else’s,” she says. “We have every conceivable Christofle glass, Baccarat, the whole gamut, but use it in a more casual way.”

In theory, Berilda sleeps 12, but Williams says she’s perfect for ten guests, unless there are small children. “We have a Harry Potter room,” she says, “a cute little room. My son slept in there and said, ‘mom, you have to put the books in there’ and came back with a set of Harry Potter books. So you see we have had a lot of laughs.”

The owners used the trip to the islands also an opportunity to hear feedback: “We put in new ice machines and realised we had to move things around to make her work especially well.

“We put a little portable pizza oven on her next to the barbecue. On lovely evenings, when it is not windy, we set up a table made of black Tasmanian blackwood, which has a bit of family history, on the upper deck near the barbecue. Then it folds away so we set up an outdoor movie screen... It is something to be up there and have a big laugh with the movie in front of you,” she says. There is plenty of rosé and sandy beaches in their future.

“Berilda” presents a rare opportunity to acquire a top-tier yacht boasting the highest pedigree with a documented history of excellent owners and meticulous care. Constructed by the renowned Dutch shipyard, Feadship - Royal Van Lent, and crafted by seasoned designers with years of expertise, she achieves a flawless balance of interior and exterior spaces. This 47m (155ft) vessel was built to meet Lloyd's classification and LY1 compliance standards, delivered in 2001 with an impressive 499GT of interior volume and trans-pacific range of 5000 miles at 10 knots. The esteemed John Munford has curated a classic interior, ensuring optimal comfort for the owner and guests within an ambiance of relaxed elegance.

Her next chapter can best be described as a nine-year stewardship, by a well-known gentleman with a history of famous yachts named “Mary A”, whereby he continued her legacy of meticulous care. During the years of 2020-2021, she underwent a comprehensive refit, full paint job, and an intensive 20-year Lloyds survey, ensuring her excellent condition and continued adherence to the highest standards.

Acquired in 2021, the current owner has traversed the Atlantic twice and explored Europe, New England, the Bahamas and the Caribbean, all while maintaining her impeccable state.

The interior boasts exquisite Honduran mahogany with traditional English raised paneling, enhancing the timeless feel of the yacht. The main salon offers a comfortable seating area leading to a separate formal dining space for 10 guests and is accentuated by exposed beams that highlight the vessel's graceful lines.

The owner's suite, situated beyond the foyer and staircase, boasts a study, full-beam bedroom, walk-in wardrobe, and an adjacent cabin offering versatile options for use as a 6th mini-stateroom or for other purposes.

On the lower deck, four additional guest suites offer luxurious retreats, comprising two double cabins forward and two twin cabins aft, each equipped with a Pullman berth. In total, “Berilda” comfortably accommodates up to 14 guests across 6 cabins, with quarters for a dedicated crew of 10.

The bridge deck lounge is basked in natural light and features beautiful hardwood floors, wrap-around sofa seating, and a marble-topped bar, providing a refined setting for relaxation and entertainment. Outside, the bridge deck offers an alfresco dining space with built-in semi-circular lounge areas aft. The sun deck features a jacuzzi surrounded by sun pads, a long bar with seating, and additional lounging areas with umbrellas for sun protection, perfect for leisurely days at sea.

Powered by twin Caterpillar diesel engines, “Berilda” achieves a cruising speed of 13 knots, and a 5000-mile trans-pacific range (@10kts.), making her ideal for worldwide cruising. Her zero-speed stabilizers constantly provide a smoother and more comfortable experience at anchor or while travelling at sea.

Captain Ken Bracewell. Photo: Matt Parker

#humansofyachting – Ken Bracewell

The captain of superyacht Berilda on finding a job that never feels like work.

“I’m from Ontario in Canada and my father is in the dinner-cruise business on the Great Lakes. I think he bought his first boat when I was about seven years old so I grew up around them and also learned a lot about customer service and hospitality from a young age. I’m 47 now and I’ve got a lot of years of being a captain behind me, more so than most of my contemporaries, as not many people get their first drive until they are 30. I got mine at 23.

I was pursuing a degree in naval architecture and marine engineering with the intention of designing superyachts when I started running a private charter boat for someone on a casual basis. It led to other similar jobs and eventually I got asked to go out to Italy and supervise a new build for one of my clients. I ended up dropping out of university and heading to Viareggio to do the job. I didn’t know much about the superyacht industry until that year but I realised it was a good career and quickly progressed through the ranks, running larger and larger boats.

#humansofyachting – Ken Bracewell

Ken and his father, circa 1980

Some of the people I worked for along the way have become really good friends and still are to this day. I’ve been on board Berilda since September and even though that’s a relatively short time for me, I already know that the owners are just lovely people. Currently, we are in the Caribbean and we’ll spend this coming summer in New England. When the owner retires in a year or so, we have plans to go down and do the South Pacific.

The last two yachts I worked on both belonged to retired owners, which is great as they tend to want to spend a lot of time on the boat. It opens up a lot more opportunities, as you’re not going from airport to airport; you can really go out and get lost until the provisions run out. The owners of one of my previous boats, Rena , are prime examples of that. We’d spend months at a time sailing. They became great friends, as we’d have dinner together every night. Even now, if we find ourselves in the same area, we’ll still meet up.

#humansofyachting – Ken Bracewell

I’ve been to some really great places over the course of my career, but I do have my favourites. Tonga is one of them – it has three sort of separate areas. The northern group of islands is where all the bareboat charters are – but then there’s the middle section, which is very remote. There, you’ll find little villages and some of the best whale watching I’ve seen anywhere in my life. We could be sitting at anchor and at any given moment I could just look up and scan the horizon for 30 seconds and see a whale breaching.

Scotland is another favourite of mine. I took a 45m boat through the Caledonian Canal there. I love the pure, vast beauty of the place, with those sloping grass hills and mountains in the background. There’s a lot of culture, too. We toured around and I was even able to bottle some Scotch right out of the cask for my father, which was a nice gift to give him.

#humansofyachting – Ken Bracewell

I also adore the Exumas in the Bahamas. I’ve been sailing all around the world but every time I come back there, I just kind of look at them and say, ‘wow, this is right in the backyard of Florida.’ I’ve also been lucky enough to have private dive guides in some pretty spectacular locations. It’s hard to compare anywhere with Indonesia and French Polynesia.

One of the most important things about being a yacht captain is figuring out what everybody needs from the experience – that goes for both the owner and the crew. Then you find a way to blend those two things.

#humansofyachting – Ken Bracewell

The crew of Evviva celebrating Christmas together. Photo: Jonny Gedye

I’ve witnessed a lot of family trips on superyachts and I think they are a great thing, particularly when the kids are in the teens. You have them captive for a week, but you’re also giving them fun things to do, so they’ve got stimulation, whether it’s jet skis, beach picnics, fishing – the list goes on. Everybody wins. The kids win because they’ve got a fantastic vacation and the parents win because they get to spend super quality time with their kids.

I still have a few places on my bucket list. I really would love to get into some high latitude cruising, so I’d like to make it to Antarctica and the Northwest Passage. But overall, I am pretty happy where I am. If you have a job that you love, you never need to go to work.”

The massive superyacht Dilbar stretches one-and-a-half football fields in length, about as long as a World War I dreadnought. It boasts two helipads, berths for more than 130 people and a 25-meter swimming pool long enough to accommodate another whole superyacht.

Dilbar was launched in 2016 at a reported cost of more than $648 million. Five years on, its purported owner, the Kremlin-aligned Russian oligarch Alisher Usmanov, was already dissatisfied and sent the vessel to a German shipyard last fall for a retrofit reportedly costing another couple hundred million dollars.

That’s where she lay in drydock on Thursday when the United States and European Union announced economic sanctions against Usmanov — a metals magnate and early investor in Facebook — over his ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin and in retaliation for the invasion of Ukraine.

“We are joining with our European allies to find and seize your yachts, your luxury apartments, your private jets,” President Joe Biden said during his State of the Union speech Tuesday night, addressing the oligarchs. “We are coming for your ill-begotten gains.”

But actually seizing the behemoth boats could prove challenging. Russian billionaires have had decades to shield their money and assets in the West from governments that might try to tax or seize them.

Several media outlets reported Wednesday that German authorities had impounded Dilbar. But a spokeswoman for Hamburg state’s economy ministry told The Associated Press no such action had yet been taken because it had been unable to establish ownership of the yacht, which is named for Usmanov’s mother.

Dilbar is flagged in the Cayman Islands and registered to a holding company in Malta, two secretive banking havens where the global ultra-rich often park their wealth.

Still, in the industry that caters to the exclusive club of billionaires and centimillionaires that can afford to buy, crew and maintain superyachts, it is often an open secret who owns what.

Working with the U.K.-based yacht valuation firm VesselsValue, the AP compiled a list of 56 superyachts — generally defined as luxury vessels exceeding 79 feet in length — believed to be owned by a few dozen Kremlin-aligned oligarchs, seaborne assets with a combined market value estimated at more than $5.4 billion.

The AP then used two online services — VesselFinder and MarineTraffic — to plot the last known locations of the yachts as relayed by their onboard tracking beacons.

While many are still anchored at or near sun-splashed playgrounds in the Mediterranean and Caribbean, more than a dozen were underway to or had already arrived in remote ports in small nations such as the Maldives and Montenegro, potentially beyond the reach of Western sanctions. Three are moored in Dubai, where many wealthy Russians have vacation homes.

Another three had gone dark, their transponders last pinging just outside the Bosporus in Turkey — gateway to the Black Sea and the southern Russian ports of Sochi and Novorossiysk.

Graceful, a German-built Russian-flagged superyacht believed to belong to Putin, left a repair yard in Hamburg on Feb. 7, two weeks before Russia invaded Ukraine. It is now moored in the Russian Baltic port of Kaliningrad, beyond the reach of Western sanctions imposed against him this past week.

Some Russian oligarchs appear to have not gotten the memo to move their superyachts, despite weeks of public warnings of Putin’s planned invasion.

French authorities seized the superyacht Amore Vero on Thursday in the Mediterranean resort town of La Ciotat. The boat is believed to belong to Igor Sechin, a Putin ally who runs Russian oil giant Rosneft, which has been on the U.S. sanctions list since Russia annexed Crimea in 2014.

The French Finance Ministry said in a statement that customs authorities boarded the 289-foot Amore Vero and discovered its crew was preparing for an urgent departure, even though planned repair work wasn’t finished. The $120 million boat is registered to a company that lists Sechin as its primary shareholder.

On Saturday, Italian financial police in the port of San Remo seized the 132-foot superyacht Lena, which is flagged in the British Virgin Islands. Authorities said the boat belongs to Gennady Timchenko, an oligarch close to Putin and among those sanctioned by the European Union. With an estimated net worth of $16.2 billion, Timchenko is the founder of the Volga Group, which specializes in investments in energy, transport and infrastructure assets.

The 213-foot Lady M was also seized by the Italians while moored in the Riviera port town of Imperia. In a tweet announcing the seizure on Friday, a spokesman for Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi said the comparatively modest $27 million vessel was the property of sanctioned steel baron Alexei Mordashov, listed as Russia’s wealthiest man with a fortune of about $30 billion.

But Mordashov’s upsized yacht, the 464-foot Nord, was safely at anchor on Friday in the Seychelles, a tropical island chain in the Indian Ocean not under the jurisdiction of U.S. or EU sanctions. Among the world’s biggest superyachts, Nord has a market value of $500 million.

Since Friday, Italy has seized $156 million in luxury yachts and villas in some of its most picturesque destinations, including Sardinia, the Ligurian coast and Lake Como.

Most of the Russians on the annual Forbes list of billionaires have not yet been sanctioned by the United States and its allies, and their superyachts are still cruising the world’s oceans.

The evolution of oligarch yachts goes back to the tumultuous decade after the 1991 fall of the Soviet Union, as state oil and metals industries were sold off at rock-bottom prices, often to politically connected Russian businessmen and bankers who had provided loans to the new Russian state in exchange for the shares.

Russia’s nouveau riche began buying luxury yachts similar in size and expense to those owned by Silicon Valley billionaires, heads of state and royalty. It’s a key marker of status in Moscow and St. Petersburg, and size matters.

“No self-respecting Russian oligarch would be without a superyacht,” said William Browder, a U.S.-born and now London-based financier who worked in Moscow for years before becoming one of the Putin regime’s most vocal foreign critics. “It’s part of the rite of passage to being an oligarch. It’s just a prerequisite.”

As their fortunes ballooned, there was something of an arms race among the oligarchs, with the richest among them accumulating personal fleets of ever more lavish boats.

For example, Russian metals and petroleum magnate Roman Abramovich is believed to have bought or built at least seven of the world’s largest yachts, some of which he has since sold off to other oligarchs.

In 2010, Abramovich launched the Bermuda-flagged Eclipse, which at 533 feet was at the time the world’s longest superyacht. Features include a wood-burning firepit and swimming pool that transforms into a dance floor. Eclipse also boasts its own helicopter hangar and an undersea bay that reportedly holds a mini-sub.

Dennis Cauiser, a superyacht analyst with VesselsFinder, said oligarch boats often include secret security measures worthy of a Bond villain, including underwater escape hatches, bulletproof windows and armored panic rooms.

“Eclipse is equipped with all sorts of special features, including missile launchers and self-defense systems on board,” Cauiser said. “It has a secret submarine evacuation area and things like that.”

Eclipse was soon eclipsed by Azzam, purportedly owned by the emir of Abu Dhabi, which claimed the title of longest yacht when it was launched in 2013. Three years after that, Usmanov launched Dilbar, which replaced another slightly smaller yacht by the same name. The new Dilbar is the world’s largest yacht by volume.

Abramovich, whose fortune is estimated at $12.4 billion, fired back last year by launching Solaris. While not as long as Eclipse or as big as Dilbar, the $600 million Bermuda-flagged boat is possibly even more luxurious. Eight stories tall, Solaris features a sleek palisade of broad teak-covered decks suitable for hosting a horde of well-heeled partygoers.

But no boat is top dog for long. At least 20 superyachts are reported to be under construction in various Northern European shipyards, including a $500 million superyacht being built for the American billionaire Jeff Bezos.

“It’s about ego,” Cauiser said. “They all want to have the best, the longest, the most valuable, the newest, the most luxurious.”

But, he added, the escalating U.S. and EU sanctions on Putin-aligned oligarchs and Russian banks have sent a chill through the industry, with boatbuilders and staff worried they won’t be paid. It can cost upwards of $50 million a year to crew, fuel and maintain a superyacht.

The crash of the ruble and the tanking of Moscow stock market have depleted the fortunes of Russia’s elite, with several people dropping off the list of Forbes billionaires last week. Cauiser said he expects some oligarch superyachts will soon quietly be listed by brokers at fire-sale prices.

The 237-foot Stella Maris, which was seen by an AP journalist docked this past week in Nice, France, was believed to be owned by Rashid Sardarov, a Russian billionaire oil and gas magnate. After publication of an earlier version of this story, AP was contacted Sunday by yacht broker Joan Plana Palao, who said his company represents a U.S. citizen from California who purchased the Stella Maris last month. He declined to disclose the name of the buyer or the person from whom the boat had been purchased.

On Thursday, the U.S. Treasury Department issued a new round of sanctions that included a press release touting Usmanov’s close ties to Putin and photos of Dilbar and the oligarch’s private jet, a custom-built 209-foot Airbus A340-300 passenger liner. Treasury said Usmanov’s aircraft is believed to have cost up to $500 million and is named Bourkhan, after his father.

Usmanov, whose fortune has recently shrunk to about $17 billion, criticized the sanctions.

“I believe that such a decision is unfair and the reasons employed to justify the sanctions are a set of false and defamatory allegations damaging my honor, dignity and business reputation,” he said in a statement issued through the website of the International Fencing Federation, of which he has served as president since 2008.

Abramovich has not yet been sanctioned. Members of the British Parliament have criticized Prime Minister Boris Johnson for not going after Abramovich’s U.K.-based assets, which include the professional soccer club Chelsea. Under mounting pressure, the oligarch announced this past week he would sell the $2.5 billion team and give the net proceeds “for the benefit of all victims of the war in Ukraine.”

Meanwhile, location transponders showed Solaris moored in Barcelona, Spain, on Saturday. Eclipse set sail from St. Maarten late Thursday and is underway in the Caribbean Sea, destination undisclosed.
