RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — Sebastián Báez won his fifth and biggest title Sunday with a 6-2, 6-1 victory against his Argentine compatriot Mariano Navone at the Rio Open.

The fifth-seeded Báez wasn’t seriously challenged by the 22-year-old Navone, a qualifier, in the final of the clay-court tournament.

Neither of the two Argentinians had been among the favorites to lift the title, but defending champion Cameron Norrie, Carlos Alcaraz, Stan Wawrinka and Nicolás Jarry had all stumbled.

Báez is the second Argentinian to lift the trophy, with Diego Schwartzman the first in 2018.

Báez is set to climb to a career-high No. 21 in the rankings on Monday, from his current No. 30. Navone will become a top 100 player for the first time, reaching No. 60 after Rio.

Despite a somewhat tepid final in Rio de Janeiro, some high profile tennis players past and present have argued in favor of more top tournaments in South America to please the eager crowds that flocked to the Rio Open and the Argentina Open earlier this month.

“Unpopular opinion. South America should have its own dedicated swing on the tennis tour with its own Masters series,” said three-time major winner Andy Murray on the X platform, formerly known as Twitter. “The way the fans support the tournaments there is incredible. Amazing atmospheres and is clearly part of their sporting culture. Vamos, ATP Tour.”

Six-time Grand Slam champion Boris Becker agreed: “Why unpopular? You’re absolutely right. Tennis should go to countries/continents where tennis is booming.”

Argentina’s Diego Schwartzman asked for more pressure.

“Let ATP know this, Andy. Every year they put us less support,” he said, adding there should be more tournaments in South America “not just because of how the fans support the tournaments,” but also “how many players we have and we had on the top.”

“We deserve more than this from ATP,” Schwartzman said.

2 Americans believed dead after 3 Grenadian escapees hijacked their yacht, police say

Three violent crime suspects might have killed two people aboard a yacht, possibly Americans, during an escape from Grenada to St. Vincent and the Grenadines, police said Thursday.

The suspects were being held at the South Saint George Police Station in Grenada when they escaped on Sunday and were recaptured on the nearby island nation of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines on Wednesday, according to a statement by the Royal Grenada Police Force.

Saint Vincent and the Grenadines investigators believe the men arrived there on a yacht taken from a dock near Saint George, police in Grenada said.

And the "RGPF is currently working on leads that suggest that the two occupants of the yacht may have been killed in the process," police said .

The RGPF added: "It is believed that the occupants of the yacht were American citizens."

“U.S. authorities are coordinating with local law enforcement officials on this incident," a State Department spokesperson told NBC News on Friday. “We do not comment on ongoing investigations.”

The welfare of U.S. citizens abroad is the State Department's highest priority, the official said.

“We stand ready to provide appropriate assistance to U.S. citizens in need and to their families,” the spokesperson said.

Joan Conover, president of the Seven Seans Cruising Association, fears the impact the deadly incident could have on the greater boating community.

"It will concern all cruisers unless the situation protection improves," said Conover, head of the advocacy group for recreational boat operators worldwide.

Ron Mitchell, 30, Trevon Robertson, 19, and Abita Stanislaus, 25, had all been charged with one count of robbery with violence, police said.

Mitchell had been additionally charged with a count of rape, three counts of attempted rape, two counts of indecent assault and causing harm, police said.

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — Authorities in the eastern Caribbean said they were trying to locate two people believed to be U.S. citizens who were aboard a yacht that was hijacked by three escaped prisoners from Grenada.

The Royal Grenada Police Force said in a statement released Friday that they were working on leads “that suggest” the two occupants of the yacht might have been killed.

“This investigation is in its infancy stage,” police said.

The nonprofit Salty Dawg Sailing Association identified the owners as Ralph Hendry and Kathy Brandel. It said they were “veteran cruisers” and longtime members of the association, calling them “warmhearted and capable.” A relative of Hendry didn’t return a message seeking comment Saturday.

The association said a cruising skipper had contacted the association about a member’s yacht, Simplicity, that was found “anchored and abandoned” off a beach on the island of St. Vincent.

“The good Samaritan had boarded the boat and noted that the owners … were not onboard and found evidence of apparent violence,” the association said in a statement Thursday.

The association said Hendry and Brandel had sailed the yacht in last year’s Caribbean Rally from Hampton, Virginia, to Antigua, and were spending the winter cruising in the eastern Caribbean.

“This is a very upsetting event and details are still unconfirmed by the authorities, but this does appear to be a tragic event,” said Bob Osborn, the association’s president. “In all my years of cruising the Caribbean, I have never heard of anything like this.”

Family members of those missing met with authorities in St. Vincent on Saturday, where they were seen boarding the yacht that was hijacked. It was being guarded by officials, one of whom was wearing latex gloves.

Hendry’s family issued a statement Saturday thanking police, local coast guards and all those who helped authorities gather information.

“It means so much to us that so many people cared for Ralph and Kathy as friends and fellow cruisers that they are willing to stop and help in whatever way possible,” the family said.

They also asked that all those trying to conduct independent searches to “stand down.”

“The only way we feel this situation could be worse would be if anyone was hurt or endangered trying to conduct searches,” the family said.

Authorities in Grenada said they had dispatched senior investigators and a forensic specialist to the nearby island of St. Vincent, where the escaped prisoners were arrested Wednesday.

The prisoners, ages 19, 25 and 30, were charged a couple of months ago with one count of robbery with violence. The eldest inmate also was charged with one count of rape, three counts of attempted rape and two counts of indecent assault and causing harm, police in Grenada said.

The three men escaped from their holding cell Feb. 18, according to police.

Authorities said a preliminary investigation suggested the three men seized the yacht at Grenada’s capital, St. George’s, and traveled to St. Vincent.

Retired US couple island-hopping in the Caribbean vanish from their yacht

  • US couple Kathy Brandel and Ralph Hendry disappeared while sailing off the Grenada coast.
  • Their yacht, SV Simplicity, was found abandoned, blood-stained, and 80 miles off course.
  • The Royal Grenada Police Force links the couple's disappearance to the escape of three prisoners.

Insider Today

Nick Buro and Bryan Hendry were baffled by the sudden silence from their parents, Kathy Brandel and Ralph Hendry, who had lived on a yacht for over a decade, People reports.

The American couple vanished while sailing off the coast of Grenada on February 18. Their yacht, the SV Simplicity, was discovered abandoned 80 miles away. Authorities suspect foul play in the couple's disappearance.

Ralph Hendry and Kathy Brandel are seasoned sailors who had recently completed a " Caribbean Rally" from Virginia to Antigua , The Washington Post reports.

They were seeing out the winter island hopping in the Eastern Caribbeanin their catamaran, according to a statement from their sailing club, per The Washington Post.

According to the Post, the last sighting of Hendry and Brandel was near Grand Anse Beach in Grenada on February 18.

A sailing captain stumbled upon the ransacked vessel while paddle-boarding along the Saint Vincent shore, per People. The yacht was splattered with blood stains. The captain came across Brandel and Hendry's American passports, prompting him to call for help.

Authorities were swiftly notified, with the Coast Guard Service reporting the vessel as "unoccupied" and noting the blood stains.

Three prisoners escaped custody on the day the couple disappeared

Three Grenadian prisoners — Ron Mitchell, Trevor Robertson, and Atiba Stanislaus — escaped custody on the same day as Brandel and Hendry's disappearance. Police suspect a connection, suggesting the trio may have been involved in the couple's disappearance.

A statement shared by the Royal Grenada Police Force revealed that "Ron Mitchell was charged separately with one count of rape, three counts of attempted Rape, two counts of indecent assault, and causing harm." The three men were charged jointly with one count of robbery with violence.

They escaped from a holding cell at South St George Police Station on February 18, 2024, the same day the American couple disappeared.

The RGPF statement said the three men made their way to the nearby island of St Vincent "via a yacht which was docked in the St. George area. The RGPF is currently working on leads that suggest that the two occupants of the yacht may have been killed in the process. It is believed that the occupants of the yacht were American citizens."

In a statement posted to Salty Dawg Sailing Association , Nick Buro and Bryan Hendry requested that cruises and anyone not affiliated with the officials with presiding jurisdiction stand down. "The only way we feel this situation could be worse would be if anyone was hurt or endangered trying to conduct searches," they wrote.

A GoFundMe fundraising appeal started by Jessica Mause on behalf of Nick Buro said:

"It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that we share the devastating news of the senseless act of violence that tragically claimed the lives of husband and wife, Ralph Hendry and Kathy Brandel."

Caribbean authorities say missing American couple is feared dead after 3 prisoners hijacked yacht

FORT PIERCE, Fla. — An American couple who went missing while sailing off the coast of Granada is feared dead after their catamaran yacht was hijacked by three escaped prisoners, authorities said.

The Royal Grenada Police Force said in a statement released Thursday that they were working on leads "that suggest" that the two occupants of the yacht — named Simplicity — may have been killed. While details on the incident remain unclear, police said preliminary information indicates that the case is likely tied to the escape of the three prisoners.

"It is believed that the occupants of the yacht were American citizens," police said, adding that the investigation was still in "its infancy stage."

The nonprofit Salty Dawg Sailing Association identified the couple as Kathy Brandel and Ralph Hendry in a statement . The association noted that the pair were veteran cruisers and longtime members of the association, calling them "warmhearted and capable."

"This is a very upsetting event and details are still unconfirmed by the authorities, but this does appear to be a tragic event," Bob Osborn, the association’s president, said in the statement. "In all my years of cruising the Caribbean, I have never heard of anything like this."

Hendry and Brandel were last seen on Feb. 18 and are believed to have been killed the following day near the shores of Grand Anse Beach in Grenada, according to a GoFundMe page raising money for their family. The funds raised will help cover funeral costs and recover the couple's vessel and belongings.

Missing couple's yacht found 'anchored and abandoned'

Hendry and Brandel were on their final voyage with the Salty Dawg Sailing Association when their yacht was found, "bearing chilling evidence of a violent struggle," the GoFundMe page states.

The association said it was alerted by a cruising skipper about a member's yacht, Simplicity, that was found "anchored and abandoned" off a beach on the island of St. Vincent. The association added that its live member’s tracking map showed the vessel anchored in Grenada before it moved to its last anchorage off St. Vincent.

"The good Samaritan had boarded the boat and noted that the owners … were not onboard and found evidence of apparent violence," the association said. The St. Vincent Coast Guard took possession of Simplicity and local police are investigating with the U.S. Embassy and the Grenada police, according to the association.

On Saturday, family members of the couple met with authorities in St. Vincent, where they were seen boarding the vessel — which was being guarded by officials, one of whom was wearing latex gloves.

Hendry's family issued a statement Saturday thanking police, local coast guards, and those who helped authorities gather information. They also asked that all those trying to conduct independent searches "stand down."

"It means so much to us that so many people cared for Ralph and Kathy as friends and fellow cruisers that they are willing to stop and help in whatever way possible," the family said.

Incident coincided with the escape of prisoners

Authorities in Grenada are investigating what happened to the couple and said they had dispatched senior investigators and a forensic specialist to St. Vincent, where the escaped prisoners were arrested Wednesday.

According to Grenada police, preliminary information suggests that the prisoners hijacked the yacht in St. George’s in Grenada, and traveled to the nearby island of St. Vincent. The three men had escaped from their holding cell on Feb. 18, police said.

The prisoners, ages 19, 25, and 30, were arrested and charged in December with one count of robbery with violence. The eldest inmate also was charged with one count of rape, three counts of attempted rape, and two counts of indecent assault and causing harm, police said.

Couple remembered by family, friends

According to the GoFundMe page, Hendry and Brandel were "seasoned sailors who lived on their beloved catamaran."

The pair spent their retirement sailing, the GoFundMe page states. The couple had sailed their yacht in last year's Caribbean Rally from Hampton, Virginia, to Antigua, and were spending the winter cruising in the eastern Caribbean, the Salty Dawg Sailing Association said.

WPTV-Channel 5 reported that the couple spent their winters docked at a Fort Pierce, Florida, marina, according to Hendry's sister, Suellen Desmaris.

"This was their whole life. They didn't own another home, they didn't own cars, they owned Simplicity," Desmarais told WPTV . "And when you were invited onto Simplicity, you were made to feel as magical as they were and as magical as that boat was."

The couple had previously docked their catamaran at the Safe Harbor Harbortown Marina in Fort Pierce.

"They were the sweetest people," Keith Mallamo said in an email to TCPalm, part of the USA TODAY Network. Mallamo said he was friends with the couple when they docked their vessels at the marina in Fort Pierce.

One Christmas, Brendel baked cookies for everyone on the dock, and Hendry was always available to help his fellow sailors, Mallamo wrote.

Virgil van Dijk headed Liverpool to a 1-0 victory over Chelsea in the 2024 Carabao Cup final at Wembley on Sunday.

The Reds captain scored deep into extra-time of the showpiece to secure the club its record-extending 10th title in the competition.

Van Dijk’s header in the 118th minute from Kostas Tsimikas’ corner came after both sides struck the woodwork and had efforts disallowed for offside, along with plenty of other chances, in the earlier action.

There were two changes to the line-up that defeated Luton Town at Anfield in midweek, with Ibrahima Konate and Andy Robertson coming in for Jarell Quansah and Joe Gomez.

Kelleher, Endo, Van Dijk, Konate (Quansah, 106), Diaz, Mac Allister (McConnell, 87), Gakpo (Danns, 87), Elliott, Robertson (Tsimikas, 87), Gravenberch (Gomez, 27), Bradley (Clark, 72).

Unused substitutes: Adrian, Koumas, Nyoni.

It was a hugely impressive start from Liverpool, who applied long spells of pressure on the Chelsea backline.

After being tested with early long-range efforts, both goalkeepers then pulled off crucial interventions.

Djordje Petrovic kept out a low drive from Luis Diaz inside the area after Cody Gakpo capitalised on a slip at the back from Axel Disasi.

At the other end, Cole Palmer looked destined to score from close range after an attempted clearance of a Conor Gallagher cross fell kindly to him – but Caoimhin Kelleher flung himself brilliantly across goal to keep the powerful effort out.

The Reds were dealt a blow midway through the period as Ryan Gravenberch was stretchered off following a Moises Caicedo challenge. Gomez was the replacement.

Chelsea had the ball in the net in the 32nd minute but the flag was quickly raised for offside and the decision confirmed by VAR. Nicolas Jackson went in behind too early before squaring across goal for Raheem Sterling, who tapped in.

But just as Liverpool were up against it, they were a whisker away from taking a lead into the break. Robertson clipped a cross into the box and Gakpo’s header struck the post, with the rebound cleared.

The final chance of the half went the Reds’ way as well, a promising attack ending with Conor Bradley’s shot from inside the box getting blocked.

Second half

A counter-attack presented Chelsea with a good opportunity early on, though Enzo Fernandez was unable to adjust his feet in the area and convert from Gallagher’s pass.

Harvey Elliott volleyed a cross from Gakpo that needed pushing away from the Chelsea goal by Petrovic.

On the hour mark, Liverpool had a goal chalked off by VAR. Van Dijk headed in a whipped free-kick from the left by Robertson but a lengthy review deemed Wataru Endo to have been offside in the build-up.

The spectacle grew more and more open. Disasi could have put the Blues in front but did not connect properly at the back post from a yard out when a corner was flicked on to him.

They went close again a few minutes later, Gallagher’s delicate flick off a Palmer cross striking the post and bouncing clear.

Gomez, meanwhile, tested Petrovic with a powerful hit from an angle at the end of a sweeping attack.

Liverpool needed the talents of Kelleher on three occasions late on.

First, he came out to smother Gallagher before he could get a shot away when in front of goal. And then, in the second minute of stoppage time, he used his feet to keep out an effort from Palmer and then pushed away Christopher Nkunku’s follow-up.

Petrovic tipped over a Jayden Danns close-range header after Van Dijk had managed to work the ball back across goal in the aftermath of a cleared corner, while Elliott then fired into the side-netting following Diaz’s switch.

In the second half of the additional 30 minutes, Kelleher got down low to keep out Noni Madueke’s curler from outside the box and Tsimikas tested Petrovic once more.

A golden chance fell to Elliott five minutes before the end but somehow his back-post header off Tsimikas’ delivery was kept out by the feet of Petrovic.

But just as another final with Chelsea appeared to be heading to a penalty shootout, up popped the Liverpool skipper with the trophy-winning moment.

Van Dijk got in front of Mykhailo Mudryk on a corner from Tsimikas and glanced a header into the far corner to spark wild scenes in the red half of Wembley.

Liverpool owner John W Henry has dipped into the transfer market to splash out an eye-watering £68m on a new 215-foot super-yacht.

The American, who is the majority shareholder of Liverpool owners Fenway Sports Group, spent the whopping amount on the luxury yacht which can reportedly accommodate 12 overnight guest in a master suite, three double cabins and two twins, and up to 17 crew in separate quarters.

The super-yacht, which was previously named Ester III, was formerly owned by Georgy Bedzhamov, but was snapped up by Henry after the Russian entrepreneur became wanted on fraud charges in his homeland.

Henry has since renamed the yacht 'Iroquois' and the property has a French classical theme throughout its interior, according to Yacht Harbour, as well as custom furniture and a hand-carved leather piece of artwork in the main stairwell.

Among the yacht's main features are an ornate fireplace in the main saloon, an infinity pool located aft of the main deck, an elevator, a spa center, a gym and a helipad located on the bow.

Liverpool owner John W Henry walks out at Wembley with his wife Linda Pizzuti

Other features of the stunning super-yacht include a hot tub, silk carpeting, gold leaf detailing, and Henry's new signing has a top speed of 15 knots (17mph).

The yacht was ordered to be sold by the Gibraltar Supreme Court after a claim was filed by mutli-national bank, BNP Paribas (Suisse) SA, and was listed for sale in August at £67.6m.

It is reported that proceeds from the yacht's sale will be distributed to creditors in the coming months.

Reds owner Henry rescued Liverpool Football Club from the poisonous reign of Tom Hicks and George Gillett in October 2010 when he and his business associates, who were then known as New England Sports Ventures (NESV), purchased the club for £300m.

Henry, who is worth close to £2 billion according to influential American business magazine Forbes, also owns the Boston Red Sox, the Boston Globe newspaper and a NASCAR racing team.

Chelsea 0-1 Liverpool player ratings: Virgil van Dijk, Caoimhin Kelleher are Liverpool's monsters

Virgil van Dijk was on target as Liverpool beat Chelsea at Wembley; the centre-back was imperious - as was goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher; Mauricio Pochettino's side missed several big opportunities against youthful Reds

Chelsea vs Liverpool

Caoimhin Kelleher - 9

Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher saves a shot from Chelsea's Cole Palmer

Liverpool's superman. He flew to their rescue when called upon. It started with a world-class save to deny Cole Palmer from point-blank range before he made a supreme block at the feet of Conor Gallagher. He was brilliantly positioned for Christopher Nkunku's chance in injury time as he was throughout. A performance for the ages.

Andy Robertson - 7

Chelsea's Cole Palmer and Liverpool's Andrew Robertson (right) during the Carabao Cup final

Reliable as ever. Almost provided an assist with a lovely cross for Cody Gakpo but that effort struck the post.

Virgil van Dijk - 9

Liverpool's Virgil van Dijk roars in celebration after scoring the winning goal in the Carabao Cup final

A masterclass. Along with Kelleher, he stepped up. Always in the right spot, hardly putting a foot wrong. Liverpool's leader is seriously back to his best. Thought he had a match-winning moment until VAR stepped in - but he eventually stole the show late on. A monster.

Ibrahima Konate - 6

Struggled at times. He engaged in a great battle with Nicolas Jackson and came out second best. Fortunate that VAR deemed the Chelsea striker offside when he was a little slow in pushing up. Conceded four fouls and was carded.

Conor Bradley - 6

For someone so inexperienced, the way he adapted to being thrust into the Liverpool front three after Ryan Gravenberch's injury was seriously impressive on this kind of stage. Did not look out of place, and managed to get under Ben Chilwell's skin but eventually ran out of gas in the second half.

Ryan Gravenberch - 6

Replaced on 28 minutes, adding to Liverpool's injury woes, after he was caught late by Moises Caicedo. A shame for the Netherlands midfielder, who had been finding some form in recent weeks after a stop-start beginning to life at Liverpool.

Alexis Mac Allister - 7

Composed and classy on the ball. The big Wembley pitch took its toll on his legs though as he looked tired in the second half following a relentless schedule of late.

Wataru Endo - 8

Set the tone with some early aggressive play in midfield and his block on Jackson after Palmer's big first half chance was vitally important. The £16.2m Liverpool paid Stuttgart for his services was the shrewdest of business. Never stopped running and fighting.

Harvey Elliott - 7

Liverpool's Harvey Elliott challenges for the ball with Chelsea's Enzo Fernandez (AP)

Full of spark and endeavour on his 101st Liverpool appearance meaning he has become the fourth youngest Liverpool player to reach the 100 landmark behind Michael Owen, Raheem Sterling and Robbie Fowler. This was a mature performance.

Luis Diaz - 7

Saw lots of the ball, with a clear plan to utilise his presence as the senior man in the front three but his performance blew very hot and cold, mostly cold. He became predictable with his play and wild with his finishing. Could not fault his commitment to the cause though - did not stop.

Cody Gakpo - 5

Had scored in every round of the competition this season but misfired at Wembley. A clever header was unlucky to come back off the post but rushed his finish at a key moment when leaning back on 70 minutes after a barnstorming Diaz run. Liverpool needed more from him.

Joe Gomez - 7

His first Wembley appearance for Liverpool having not been selected for the previous two finals, filling in at right-back. Solid stuff as always.

Bobby Clark - 7

Yet to start a game for Liverpool but has a cup final appearance to his name now having only just turned 19 when replacing Bradley. Buzzed around without ever really affecting the game but did not look out of place.

Jayden Danns - 7

Only made his senior debut four days ago but looked confident and composed when thrust onto the big stage. He almost wrote himself into Liverpool folklore in extra-time but his looping header was tipped away by Djordje Petrovic.

James McConnell - 7

Replaced Mac Allister on 87 minutes, making just his seventh senior appearance. Used the ball intelligently.

Jarell Quansah - 7

Played the final 15 minutes of extra-time with Konate running the risk of a second yellow card. Assured.

Kostas Tsimikas - 7

Liverpool lost a bit of impetus down the left when Robertson departed but Tsmikas came to the party in extra-time with a fantastic corner delivered for Van Dijk.

Virgil van Dijk is mobbed by team-mates after scoring an extra-time winner for Liverpool

Djordje Petrovic - 7

Was let off the hook by Liverpool's injury-ravaged selection. Regardless, commanded his box well and swept up behind Axel Disasi and Levi Colwill, as well as producing a superb save to deny Elliott in the dying embers of extra-time. Needed better from the defenders in front of him as Van Dijk ghosted in to settle the game - nothing he could do.

Axel Disasi - 5

Disasi is the only player to start all six League Cup games on Chelsea's run to the final, and like Colwill, benefitted from the fact Liverpool were lacking firepower. Fairly robust performance, until... he let Van Dijk run off him for the winner. Started extra-time with a seven, and ended it with a five.

Malo Gusto - 7

Registered Chelsea's first shot on target in the opening half - a volleyed effort that did not particularly trouble Kelleher. Dealt with the direct running of Diaz well, without too much help from Disasi, and was a willing runner in the opposite direction. Dug Chelsea out of trouble a few times in extra-time, as legs were tiring. One of Chelsea's better performers.

Levi Colwill - 6

Could have been booked after six minutes for a horrible lunging tackle on Mac Allister but proved to be solid after that rash opening. Handled the threat of Gakpo well - you can only play the player in front of you, but there is every chance he would have been far less comfortable with the presence of Darwin Nunez, should the Uruguay forward been fit enough to feature.

Ben Chilwell - 6

Out-jumped for Van Dijk's attempted opener, which was then chalked off - somewhat harshly - by VAR. Managed and read the game really well, particularly in the absence of Thiago Silva, who often acts as Chelsea's regular orchestrator at the back. Liverpool scored their winner minutes after he was taken off - perhaps no coincidence.

Moises Caideco - 4

Chelsea's Moises Caicedo tackles Liverpool's Bobby Clark battle for the ball

Wild challenge on Gravenberch in the first half, who was then forced off injured. Untidy in possession and even scruffier out of it. Looks like half the player he was at Brighton and in need of a serious reboot.

Enzo Fernandez - 5

Completely fluffed a chance early in the second half when set up by Gallagher and looked shaky on the ball. Regained a bit of composure in the second half, and was typically combative, but questions remain as to whether the expensively assembled Enzo-Caicedo pairing in midfield is working for Chelsea. Jury is out.

Conor Gallagher - 7

All-action display, particularly second half. At times he glided past players as if they were not there and showed purpose and drive to affect the game. Hit the post, and blasted a couple of further chances off target. Alongside Palmer, Chelsea's most industrious performer, before being withdrawn in extra-time.

Raheem Sterling - 5

Had the ball in the net first half, which was cruelly ruled out, but couldn't affect much beyond that. Replaced by Christopher Nkunku midway through the second period, who injected more energy.

Cole Palmer - 7

Missed the chance to put Chelsea ahead inside 20 minutes, forcing Kelleher into a world-class save, but was Chelsea's biggest threat throughout. Carried the ball well, and teed Gallagher up as he struck the post after the break. Good vision too. He's the one who makes Chelsea tick in possession, albeit this wasn't his brightest game in a Blues shirt.

Nicolas Jackson - 6

Huffed and puffed but was outfought by Van Dijk in almost every department. There is no striker in the land who wins consistent headers against him, so the ploy to go high and long into Jackson seemed futile from the off. When he received the ball into feet or in behind, which was not often enough, he threatened to produce without actually producing.

Christopher Nkunku - 7

Bright and a willing runner in behind. Did miss the golden chance when firing straight at the excellent Kelleher.

Noni Madueke - 5

Wasteful. Had two opportunities inside the box down the right to provide a match-winning moment but fluffed his final ball.

Mykhailo Mudryk - 4

With tiring limbs against him, you would assume his searing pace would provide a weapon for Chelsea. It didn't. In fact, he was barely noticeable until he was outjumped for Van Dijk's winner. He epitomises where it is all going wrong for Chelsea in terms of their recruitment.

Trevoh Chalobah - 6

Replaced Chilwell with 10 minutes to go.

Van Dijk's extra-time header wins English League Cup for Liverpool over Chelsea

Aptopix britain soccer league cup.

LONDON (AP) — Virgil van Dijk came up with a crucial header to secure Liverpool a record-extending 10th English League Cup trophy on Sunday.

The center back's goal in the 28th minute of extra time sealed a 1-0 win against Chelsea at Wembley after the game had ended 0-0 in regulation.

It clinched an eighth piece of silverware for Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool and ensured he will not end his final year at the club empty-handed.

“You should always savor the good moments, this is definitely one of them," Van Dijk said. “I’m so proud, proud to be part of this club and especially proud of the boys.”

Klopp will step down at the end of the season, but victory in the League Cup has kept his team on course for an improbable quadruple of trophies.

Liverpool currently leads the Premier League table and is still in contention for the FA Cup and Europa League.

Victory was particularly satisfying for Klopp, given he had to call upon a host of the club's emerging talent in the absence of injured stars like Mohamed Salah, Darwin Nunez and Trent Alexander-Arnold .

He used seven players who were aged 21 or under.

“What happened here was absolutely insane, these things are not possible. The team, a squad, an academy full of character. I am so proud I could be part of that tonight," he said. “The craziest thing is we deserved it. We had lucky moments, they had lucky moments. The boys showed up, it was really cool.”

Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino was hoping to win his first major trophy in England after previous spells with Southampton and Tottenham.

He will have to wait.

“They (the players) are professional. They need to feel the pain. We played for a trophy we didn’t get. They need to feel the pain like us," Pochettino said. “The players feel the disappointment because we were so close to winning the game after 90 minutes.”

Liverpool and Chelsea had met in both domestic finals in 2022 and on each occasion Liverpool came out on top to lift the League Cup and FA Cup on penalties after two goalless draws.

This was another close match that saw both teams have goals ruled out for offside and the woodwork hit on three occasions.

Chelsea could have gone ahead early on when Cole Palmer ’s effort was saved by Caoimhin Kelleher from close range.

Later Raheem Sterling thought he had put Chelsea in front after sliding home Nicolas Jackson’s cross, but the goal was ruled out for offside in the buildup.

Cody Gakpo ’s header then left Chelsea goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic standing shortly before halftime, but his effort came back off the foot of the post.

Van Dijk sent Liverpool fans wild in the second half with a powerful header to beat Petrovic, but it was Chelsea’s supporters who were left cheering when after a lengthy review it was also disallowed for offside.

Conor Gallagher hit the post in the 76th after flicking Palmer’s cross beyond Kelleher and later denied when one-on-one with the keeper.

Liverpool had the better chances in extra time but when Harvey Elliott struck the post with a header it looked like it would go down to penalties again.

That was until Van Dijk came up with the decisive moment and perhaps the start of a trophy-laden end to Klopp’s reign.

Virginia couple missing in Grenada and feared killed after yacht allegedly stolen by escaped criminals

By Nikki Battiste, Tucker Reals

February 26, 2024 / 10:21 AM EST / CBS News

Two Americans who planned to spend the winter on a yacht in the Caribbean were officially missing Monday, but feared to have been killed  after their boat was stolen by prison escapees in Grenada. Kathy Brendle and Ralph Hendry were last seen a week ago near a beach in the small island nation. Police found their sailboat, and captured three escaped criminals whom they believe stole it.

Grenadan police were still searching for the couple, who are from Northern Virginia, and they told CBS News' Washington D.C. affiliate WUSA that no bodies had been found.

Family and friends have described the couple as seasoned sailors who just last year sailed their yacht, named Simplicity, from Hampton, Virginia to Antigua. They confirmed that the pair had been vacationing in Grenada, where their boat was docked.

St. Vincent Grenada Hijacked Yacht

"It's just really sad," said longtime friend K.C. McAlpin, who added that Brendle and Hendry had planned to make this their "last grand trip" on Simplicity.

Instead, things may have taken a very tragic turn. The yacht was found on Feb. 18, abandoned on a beach on the nearby island of St. Vincent.   That same day, police in Grenada said they had arrested three convicted criminals who had escaped from custody.

The three men — identified as Ron Mitchell, 30, Trevon Robertson, 19, and Abita Stanislaus, 25 — were arrested in December over an alleged violent robbery. Mitchell also faced one count of rape, three counts of attempted rape and two counts of indecent assault and causing harm.

The police believe the men hijacked the couple's yacht in Grenada and then traveled to St. Vincent.

Police said they found evidence suggesting the pair were killed, but the Americans' deaths have not been confirmed and the investigation was still in its early stages, they stressed.

Over the weekend, family members released a statement thanking officials and those who had helped gather information, saying it " means so much to us that so many people care for Ralph and Kathy."

McAlpin said the couple always made friends easily and he hoped they would be remembered for their big hearts.

"They were just a delightful couple and a real blessing in my life, and the lives of so many other people," he said.
