A £63 million luxury superyacht owned by American billionaire businessman John W Henry has docked in Jersey .

The 66-metre Elysian vessel, previously named Ester III, sails under the Cayman Islands flag and is the largest private vessel ever to have berthed in the island.

The Lürssen superyacht has an outdoor swimming pool, helicopter pad and glass lift with room for up to 12 guests and 17 crew.

It has a top speed of 16.5 knots and set sail from Florida around a month ago on a European tour, leaving Douarnenez Bay in France on Thursday afternoon before arriving at Albert Pier in St Helier at around 7am on Friday (24 May).

A crew member told ITV News that the Elysian is stopping overnight in Jersey to refuel before continuing its journey to Germany.

Guests from the UK are believed to be on board, although Mr Henry is not.

The 74-year-old has a net worth of more than £4 billion according to Forbes and has built a sports empire, owning both Liverpool FC and the Boston Red Sox.

A yacht engineer told ITV News about the financial benefits that a vessel of this size visiting Jersey will have.

Ben Blutch said: "It's a Lürssen one so it's a good brand and it's parading money all around. Imagine the price for Elysian refuelling in Jersey."

Marie-Claire Sutton from the St Helier Yacht Club added: "It's actually quite amazing and seeing such a beautiful yacht from my office window is just incredible."

Brand new super-yacht Kismet arrives in Troon as its first port of call on a round Scotland cruise

Updated: May 13

Ayrshire Daily News reader Ian Downie alerted us to the arrival in Troon of a genuine superyacht.

superyacht in liverpool today

Luxury is an adjective that barely describes this sailing palace.

Ian said “I was having a coffee by the shore at Seafield this afternoon when I saw a large ship sailing north towards Troon. The ship tracking App showed it as a luxury yacht called Kismet. Apparently it will be available for charter in the Mediterranean for upwards of a cool 3 million euros per week.”

Information online shows the 122 metre (400 feet) long Kirsten was launched earlier this year and replaced the previous 95 metre long Kirsten which was built in 2014. The superyacht website cecilwright.com says Kismet “was built by the renowned German shipyard Lürssen with exterior by Nuvolari Lenard and an interior by Reymond Langton Design, KISMET is a symbol of uncompromising luxury and sets a new standard for excellence in the industry.

Accommodating up to 12 guests in 6 cabins, KISMET offers exceptional entertainment amenities, a wide range of culinary experiences from the huge kitchen area and boasts a full suite of water sport toys and tenders.

The ultimate luxury yacht has a dedicated gym and yoga studio which boast opening sea terraces and are complemented by a juice bar for refreshment. It even has a chromotherapy bathtub. Kismet has crew accommodation for between 30 and 40 people.

“KISMET represents the most exclusive luxury yacht charter experience on the planet” says the Cecil Wright company.

Kismet was built by the world renowned German company Lurssen and according to them “highlights include a two-level open-plan entrance area with video walls, a Nemo cinema on the lower deck featuring a 150-inch television and an underwater seating area, and a luxurious 7-star wellness area, among other exquisite features.

Kismet is owned by the American billionaire Shahid Khan. It is believed to have cost $360 million and will cost about $30 million per year to operate. The yacht recently completed sea trials off the coast at Kiel, Germany and Troon is it’s first berth on its first sailing.

Shahid Khan is one of those billionaires whose life story could be turned into a successful film. His rags-to-riches story began in Pakistan, where he was born, and took a decisive turn when he arrived in the U.S. as a teenager.

According Forbes magazine the business tycoon, who is currently worth more than $8 billion, used to work as a dishwasher while attending the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Years later, he would go on to become the owner of auto parts supplier Flex-N-Gate.

superyacht in liverpool today

Mr Khan is known today mostly for his ownership of sports clubs. He owns the American football team Jacksonville Jaguars and in 2014 he brought Fulham football club the famous Egyptian born Mohamed Al-Fayed.

Mr Khan became successful as an engineer who designed a one-piece truck bumper. He now also owns several companies in the entertainment industry and has come very far from his early days.

Mr Khan and his very welcome guests are expected to enjoy the Ayrshire sunshine over a long weekend. Perhaps he will take a trip to Glasgow to watch the Old Firm football game today or maybe some guests will enjoy the world class Ayrshire golf courses. It is quite a recognition for Troon harbour owners Associated British Ports that the Kismet has berthed at Troon on its first ever journey.

We doubt the berthing fees will be quite as astronomic as Monaco where Kismet is likely to spend more of its future.

Ayrshire Daily News is very happy to welcome Mr Khan and guests to Ayrshire and hopes that it will be the first of many visits to Scotland.

Long Holes Look Intimidating, but It’s the Short Ones That Often Befuddle Golfers

At the British Open at Royal Troon, a short hole called the Postage Stamp has ended many title runs.

Justin Thomas prepare to putt with Tiger Woods and another man standing behind him.

By Paul Sullivan

The British Open at Royal Troon in Scotland this week might help answer a question vexing professional golf. Is the antidote to golfers hitting increasingly long drives creating holes that are even longer? Or is it the opposite: incredible shortness?

Troon, which is hosting its 10th Open this week, is famous for the Postage Stamp , the name given to its par-3 eighth hole, which is 123 yards on the card but may play under 100 yards this week if the tees are moved up and the pin is put in the front of the green. A tiny green surrounded by five bunkers, the hole has been a feature of the course since 1909.

It’s also a hole length that any golfer can hit. But under pressure, with the wind blowing and a tricky pin position, it’s a length that tests the skill of the most elite golfers.

This year, Troon will also have its opposite. It will have the longest hole in Open history , the par-5 sixth hole that will measure 623 yards. It beats by three yards the 15th hole at Royal Liverpool in last year’s Open.

In some ways, lengthening holes for top pros is akin to billionaires competing to have the longest yacht: It doesn’t really matter at the end of the day. Pros hit the ball so far that length alone doesn’t deter them.

What does is the strategy inherent in the design of the hole. This is where these two opposites at Troon open up a robust debate among top architects as to which matters more today: extreme length or extreme shortness?

“Short holes just fascinate me,” said Ben Crenshaw , a two-time major champion turned golf course architect with his partner Bill Coore. “Some of the great short holes in the world provide a test of accuracy and bravery in a way that a lot of other holes don’t. The Postage Stamp at Troon has been the scene of a lot of carnage and bravery.”

“The long holes are always a test over there because of the conditions,” Crenshaw added. “You only hope that you don’t reach a long hole that’s into the wind. Then it becomes a very difficult proposition. It’s a test that you will see over there.”

There was a time not so long ago when some par-5s were considered unreachable in two shots. (Hitting a par-5 in two, instead of three, is an advantage for players looking to make up ground on the rest of the field, with a birdie or maybe an eagle.)

In 1991, John Daly captivated the golfing world with how far he hit the ball in winning the P.G.A. Championship as a rookie. Two years later, when the U.S. Open was played at Baltusrol Golf Club’s Lower Course, Daly electrified the crowd when he reached the 630-yard 17th in two shots, then the only person to have done that in a tournament.

Some clubs have gone to extreme lengths to protect their holes. The 12th hole at Oakmont Country Club is one. Oakmont, which has hosted nine United States Opens and three P.G.A. Championships, is considered among the toughest golf courses in the United States. And the par-5 12th, always over 600 yards, was considered unreachable in two shots — until it wasn’t. So the last time the club hosted the U.S. Open in 2016, that hole was stretched to 684 yards, making it the longest U.S. Open hole ever.

Not everyone is a fan of that strategy.

“It’s almost impossible now to build a hole that’s unreachable in two, short of making it 700 yards, and I wouldn’t want to do that anyway,” said Tom Doak, who designed the Renaissance Club where the Scottish Open was played last week. “It’s better when the long hitter thinks he can get there, so he will risk getting in trouble to do it.”

Michael Hurdzan, a designer of Erin Hills, the longest course to ever host a U.S. Open at 7,845 yards, said being uncertain or uncomfortable is a better way to challenge elite players.

“If one were silly enough to play the maximum yardage on every hole, Erin Hills would total over 8,500 yards,” he said. “Legend has it that Patrick Reed did that on a practice day and shot 73. Length is not a strong deterrent to scoring among the elite players of today, but making them think is, and that is what a short hole can do.”

The ninth at Erin Hills is just 135 yards with bunkers surrounding it; it made many players at the 2017 U.S. Open unsure.

“The thing about Troon that I love is the capriciousness of the fairways,” Hurdzan said. “That ball can land and scoot one way or the other. They’re trying to hit it hard but now they have to hit it hard and true.”

While holes that are too long can open up a player to shooting many shots over par, they can also have the opposite effect in: removing the temptation to make a heroic shot.

So what needs to be done to keep these championship courses challenging?

Doak had several suggestions. One was a tee-shot hazard so challenging — say a deep, high-walled bunker — that it almost certainly costs players a stroke. Another is to penalize pros with a shot even they don’t like.

“My preference is to have the green bunkered more loosely on a par-5, so the player trying to hit driver off the deck might leave himself a 40-yard bunker shot,” he said. “Even pros hate those. That same bunker shouldn’t bother the guy playing three careful shots.”

A common feature is to put water near the green to claim any errant shots, but Hurdzan criticized that idea as uncreative.

“You want to reduce the margin of error as much as you can at the green, and you can do it with slopes,” he said. “We saw it at Pinehurst for the U.S. Open with all those roll offs. We’re going to see some of that at Troon because those greens have a lot of roll off. You want to design the Saturday and Sunday pin placements with small margins for error.”

Crenshaw, who restored Pinehurst No. 2 in 2011, said those sloping greens were what Donald Ross, the original designer who came from the links of Dornoch in Scotland, intended for championship golf even 100 years ago.

“Those greens defend it so well in so many different ways,” Crenshaw said. “An honest shot has to pull into that green with the proper strength. There are so many [curved] false fronts, if you don’t get the ball up into the green it will roll back on you. You have to play a conservative shot and not go for as many flagsticks. And when you do miss the greens, you’re faced with many delicate shots.”

This is where Crenshaw, a two-time winner of the Masters Tournament, said short befuddled great players more than long.

“Think of the 12th hole at Augusta.,” he said. “That will test you no matter what. It’s the shortest hole on that golf course. And it gets all the attention.”

Of course, at a championship venue like Troon, sometimes both short and long, can be problematic.

In 1982, Bobby Clampett playing in his first Open Championship at age 22 led by five after two rounds. He was off to a solid start with a few more birdies in the third round.

Then at the sixth, the longest hole back then at 577 yards, he carded a triple-bogey 8 that sent him reeling.

In 1997, Tiger Woods, who had turned professional the year before, was in contention at Troon until he took a 6 on the par-3 Postage Stamp hole. “That eighth hole at Troon tests you in all conditions,” Crenshaw said, “because the target is so small.”

And that may make it the better defense to today’s length debate.

Superyacht sinks off the coast of Italy

By Megan Hinton

The moment a 140ft superyacht sunk off the coast off Italy was captured on camera after the huge ship was hit by a storm.

Listen to this article

According to the Super Yacht Times , the vessel called My Saga was travelling from Gallipoli in Turkey to Milazzo in Italy and was spotted flying a Cayman Islands flag.

Four passengers and five crew were rescued before the ship submerged into the sea and no injuries were reported.

The Italian coast guard said in a tweet: "In recent days, the Guardia Costiera of Crotone coordinated the rescue operations of passengers and crew of a 40m yacht, which sank 9 miles offshore of Catanzaro Marina."

They added: "Administrative investigation launched to identify the causes."

According to reports, the captain sent out a distress call late at night during a storm because the ship was taking on a significant amount of water.

The superyacht, which was built in 2007, has room for up to 12 guests on board alongside accommodation for 7 crew members including the captain.

It comes after a British man died and six other people were injured when a luxury yacht smashed into rocks in Sardinia three weeks ago.

The 63-year-old, who has not been named but is understood to be the owner of the 70ft Magnum-type motor yacht involved in the crash, was killed in the accident around 8.40pm yesterday near Porto Cervo, in Sardinia.

It is thought the vessel - carrying a total of seven people - was swerving to avoid another boat near a group of islands known as Il Nibani that lie just off the coast when it hit the rocks and half-sunk, La Stampa reports.

Inside 'luxury' house boat in Liverpool marina you can book to stay in

It's just a stones throw away from Liverpool Yacht Club

There are plenty of places you can stay in Liverpool if you're looking for a standard bed and breakfast offering.

But those who are looking to try something different can now stay in a 'luxury' house boat in Liverpool marina .

Travellers from abroad, or those wanting a staycation, can book out the barge which boasts five bedrooms and five bathrooms.

READ MORE: Travel update: Latest advice for France, Spain, Portugal, Turkey and USA

Described as a miniature 'boutique hotel' on water, the boat benefits from sun decks , a spacious living room and fully equipped kitchen.

The house boat is managed by Host So Simple - a business that manages and refurbishes Airbnb properties in Liverpool.

Speaking about the newest property, co-founder Joe Davies, said it’s unlike anything they’ve managed before.

The 27-year-old told the ECHO : "This is one of those crazy ones you see on Airbnb.

"It’s a massive five bed, five bathroom barge, it's a real one off.

"It's almost like a miniature boutique hotel on the water."

Since it’s so unique, Joe says there have been ‘back to back’ bookings since they first listed the boat in June.

He added: "We took over it in June and since then it's been back to back bookings.

"We’re seeing that city breaks have changed now after covid.

"People are now making bookings such as this just to be in the city and spend time with family.

"They’re thinking we haven't got a house big enough at home and we want something a bit more quirky than your average cottage that most people have been staying in lately.

"Whereas a family might have gone to a cottage in the country to rekindle in the past this boat has been a happy medium of something different and quirky but also staying right in the heart of the city."

The house boat is based in Liverpool Marina and is just a stone's throw away from Liverpool Yacht Club.

The adventurous types will also enjoy being close to the water sports centre, which allows customers to rent out kayaks and paddle boards.

Those who prefer a more relaxed staycation can simply take in the setting of the Albert Dock.

Because of its location, the hosts only want to primarily accept bookings from families to keep the area peaceful.

Joe said: "It’s such a nice contribution to the marina, it's the biggest boat there.

"Because it’s such a peaceful area, the owners would prefer to not take any party bookings as they want to preserve the lovely area.

"The owners want to be respectful to the marina and the other boat owners."
