The Sea Cliff Yacht Club is a private, Members only Club created for the common interests of its Members and to promote the sport of sailing, yachting and other aquatic sports. The Sea Cliff Yacht Club is operated as a corporation under a charter granted by New York State. Its affairs are conducted by a group of Members elected to office annually under terms of the Club’s constitution. The Club has shown continued growth in facilities and services through the years. The value of its properties have increased greatly though conservation and farsighted management.

Hempstead Harbor: Glen Cove and Sea Cliff - next door, yet worlds apart!

For 250 years, Glen Cove was a sheltered harbor within the Town of Oyster Bay. In 1917, Glen Cove incorporated as an independent city and subsequently grew into the multicultural community it is today. Sea Cliff on the other hand started out as a Methodist campground with a purchase of 240 acres in 1871 from James Carpenter. By 1883, Sea Cliff had incorporated as a village within the Town of Oyster Bay and became a popular resort for city people, some of whom built Victorian and Gothic 'cottages' on the hillside leading down to the harbor. Many of these homes still stand, and Sea Cliff boasts one of the largest samplings of this architecture. At one point (early 1900s) Sea Cliff was the site of a steamboat dock where people from distant venues arrived to bask on Sea Cliff's beaches .

Sea Cliff and Glen Cove, though neighbors, have had disagreements over time about management of the harbor. Recently, Glen Cove negotiated a deal with Fox Navigation for a high speed ferry service between Long Island and Connecticut's casinos, which Sea Cliff vigorously opposed.

How to get there

Hempstead Harbor is directly across the Sound from Rye and Larchmont, and between Manhasset and Oyster Bays. Approaching from the West past Execution Rocks, round G23 FlG4s Gong and turn SW. As you round Prospect Point, note the mansions on the hills to starboard, most notably Hempstead House & Castle Gould, the home of Daniel and Florence Guggenheim on the crest of the hills, and Falaise built for Harry Guggenheim in 1923 in the style of a 13th century Norman manor house.

Although wide open to the North, the breakwater extending out from Glen Cove provides adequate protection for the mooring field and harbor. For the inner harbor, use chart 12366. Depth up to the breakwater is about 25 feet MLW and the breakwater is marked by a light (4M FlG4s). Inside the breakwater, the depth remains in the teens, but drops off to about 9 feet closer in to the Glen Cove Creek approach in Mosquito Cove. The approach to Glen Cove Creek follows the beach along the SW shore and is marked by GC1 and RN2.

From the East, round Matinecock Point and follow the countours around Weeks Point to the breakwater.

Hempstead Harbor is home to two marinas and three yacht clubs. Just outside to port of Glen Cove Creek sits the Hempstead Harbour Club at the foot of Garvies Point Road. Just North of that is Glen Cove Yacht Club. South of the entrance to Glen Cove Creek you'll see Sea Cliff Yacht Club along the beachfront. Inside the Creek there are some pretty substantial boats in the two marinas. The first to starboard is Brewer Yacht Yard at Glen Cove. Farther in just before the Steamboat Landing Restaurant is Jude Thaddeus Glen Cove Marina. Both marinas have transient slips and the yacht clubs offer transient moorings to visiting yachtmen with reciprocal priviledges. There is also a public boat ramp at Garvies Point Road.

Around Long Island Regatta: What it's like to compete in LI's premier sailing race

Against a backdrop of the usual bustling ferries and commercial traffic on New York Harbor, 71 sailboats circled near the Statue of Liberty, awaiting the start of Long Island’s premier sailing race. 

At noon on a Thursday in late July, a series of warning horns, radio announcements and a trumpeted fanfare emanated from a two-story anchored barge, along with the dropping of a flag. Then, the first group of vessels, driven by the wind, headed for the starting line, aiming to cross exactly at 12:05 p.m.

The Sea Cliff Yacht Club’s 46th Around Long Island Regatta was underway.

The regatta, which attracts serious racers and casual sailors alike, began in 1977 with 88 sailing yachts. Since then, it has developed a passionate following, despite the rigors of the race. 

The race is at least 207 miles long, starting east along the South Shore  to Montauk and then west along the North Shore to Hempstead Harbor. But tacking against headwinds or maneuvering to take advantage of stronger breezes usually adds dozens of miles. While some boats finish in under a day, a few straggle in almost three days later. And, as is always the case, some will drop out because of mechanical failure or too much or not enough wind.

“It's a mental and physical and equipment challenge,” said John Stephenson, 64, of New Paltz, who said he has competed in the regatta since 2006. “It’s a nonstop race, so the crew is active for anywhere from 36 to 60 hours with the mental challenges of driving through storms, sailing at night, being overtired, hallucinating, trying to make good decisions. We’ve had all kinds of weather, everything from storms to fog, not enough wind, too much wind, too much heat, not enough heat.”

This year, the race was held from July 27-30. A total of 71 boats competed in nine divisions grouped by size, hull type, sail configuration and boat speed. The boats generally must be at least 24 feet long, and there is no upper limit. The biggest boat this year was Kodiak, a 66-foot-long vessel from the U.S. Naval Academy.

The regatta requires a lot of work by a lot of volunteers to pull off.

“This is about a 10-month-long process,” said Shana Spanier-Ciniski, 58, of Glen Cove, who has co-chaired the race for two years. Her committee is comprised of 20 club members, including her son William Ciniski.

One club member found himself unexpectedly on the race committee this year. Harvey Bass, 76, of Sea Cliff, who said he has competed about 15 times and planned to do so again, but a fuel tank problem delayed launching his boat.

Bass, who created the Ranger Sailing Foundation in 2015 to sponsor children who can’t afford to participate in the yacht club’s junior sail training program, said he has sailed in the race about five times since 2007, with recipients of his scholarships serving as crew.

The first year, he said, “They ran the boat the whole race, and we got a second place.”

It hasn’t always gone so smoothly.

“We had a horrible experience in the 2009 race because the seas were huge,” Bass said. “I think only 11 boats finished the race.”

The crew’s parents had supplied food for the boat, including lasagna, which Bass said the kids started eating as they headed down the East River toward the race start. With the rough surf, well … it didn’t end well.

“We wound up turning back,” he said.

This year’s race was thankfully less eventful, though it still had its share of difficulties.

As a 15-mph breeze blew up through the Narrows — the strait between Staten Island and Brooklyn — on the first day, boats from as far as Annapolis, Maryland, headed for the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge and then for a buoy off the entrance to New York Harbor, where they could turn east and take full advantage of the southwest wind. They had a long, straight shot to Montauk and then up around the North Fork and down the Long Island Sound, where the winds are often light and unpredictable, to the finish in Hempstead Harbor off the Sea Cliff Yacht Club.

“The exit from New York Harbor was a real nice ride,” said Stephenson, who is chasing the record set by the late South Shore sailor Rudi Harbauer for sailing in the most consecutive regattas. Harbauer competed in the first 25 races.

Stephenson’s first three times in the regatta, from 2006 through 2008, he crewed for another yacht club member. The support engineer for IBM has since helmed his own boat, A Boy’s Dream, a 28-foot Laser 28 that he keeps in Kingston, New York. It is one of the smallest boats in the races.

“We actually made the trip when they canceled the race in 2020 during COVID just because we didn't want to break our streak,” he said. “So we went around the Island that year anyway.”

Out on the ocean this year, Stephenson said, “The wind kept building so we had to switch sails a few times.”

By the second morning, the boat was off Shinnecock Inlet. “We saw some whales. I saw sharks and dolphins.”

That night, he said, “We had lightning and a squall.”

On the Sound, he said, “The wind was pretty light Saturday morning until around noon, and we finally picked up a real nice breeze.”

Stephenson finished in 52 hours and 49 minutes for fifth place in his division.

Josh Reisberg, 42, a lawyer from Sea Cliff and member of the yacht club, planned to take his 40-foot J-120 named Abilyn on the race double-handed — aka, with two sailors — with fellow yacht club member Mark DiSanti, but the boat was struck by lightning and damaged before the race. So he competed in his third regatta on another boat, a 34-foot Figaro 3 named Celeritas, with skipper Vlad Shablinsky and two others, including 17-year-old Sea Cliff Yacht Club junior sailor Annika Kaelin. None of them had sailed together before the race.

Along the South Shore, Reisberg said, “We hit average speeds of 16 knots while surfing. Waves were breaking over the boat. It was glorious!”

But then, he said, “The leg back home in the Sound was a test of patience. We had just enough wind to ghost over the finish just past midnight.”

The race took them 35 hours and 25 minutes for a fourth-place finish in their division.

Iris Vogel, 66, of New Rochelle, meanwhile, competed for the first time with a crew of six junior sailors ages 15 to 17 from the Huguenot Yacht Club. They sailed on a 30-foot J-112 named The ROCC, in honor of a deceased friend, Rocco Campanelli.

“The juniors handled the rough weather very well, this being their first time offshore,” she said.

The ROCC’s elapsed time was 39 hours and 16 minutes, for seventh in its division.

Brad Dickson, of Glen Cove, a former regatta co-chair, competed in the race as a first-time skipper after four competitions as a crew member. The manager of the Nassau County Public Works Department’s vehicle fleet sailed with a crew of relatives on Rhapsody, a 46½-foot Sabre that he and his wife bought last year.

“We had a great start,” said Dickson, 54. “Once under the bridge, the boat got into a great groove and handled the large seas amazingly well.” They continued to make progress — until the wind died for more than six hours off Northport.

Dickson placed second in his division with an elapsed time of 44 hours and 51 minutes.

Madelyn Ploch, a first-class midshipman, or senior, at the U.S. Naval Academy, was not so lucky.

Ploch was captain of the school’s Wahoo, a Kerr 50 with 14 people aboard. Once underway, they were averaging more than 17 mph before the Wahoo had to leave the race at Montauk. A crew member had fallen overboard while dousing a spinnaker — a large, kite-like, triangular sail at the bow of the boat — and received 10 stitches after being transferred to shore by a U.S. Coast Guard vessel.

The oldest boat in the race was a wooden yawl — a type of two-masted sailboat — named Golden-Eye, which was built in 1937 and is owned by construction company owner Michael Emmert, 45, and his father Richard, 81, both of Glen Head.

Richard Emmert bought the boat in 1972 and they entered the regatta in 2003 but did not finish, his son said. They have competed 12 times with Golden-Eye since 2009, he said. "She's quite competitive,” Michael Emmert said before the start.

He wasn’t wrong. “We came out of the start like a rocket,” Michael Emmert said, hitting 13 mph. Golden-Eye finished second in its division in 46 hours and 47 minutes.

When the last boat, Nomad, a Hunter 45 owned by Shane Haas, of Westchester, crossed the finish line at 7:44 a.m. on July 30 — 67 hours after starting — 50 of the 71 boats had completed the race.

“That’s pretty much typical,” said principal race officer Doug Wefer. The withdrawals were attributed to too much wind, not enough wind, mechanical problems and the Wahoo’s medical emergency.

The first boat to finish was the Naval Academy’s Kodiak, in about 27 hours. The overall winner after applying the handicapping (to compensate for slower boats and make the race more competitive) was Group 5, a 34-foot Figaro 2 sailed by a team of four students from Webb Institute, the naval architecture and marine engineering college in Glen Cove.

“The overall conditions were the full spectrum,” Wefer said of the race. “Quite a windy day on Thursday, to being becalmed on Friday, and just a glorious ride home for the last boats on Sunday.”

THE HISTORY OF THE LONG ISLAND REGATTA

The history of the Around Long Island Regatta began with the Operation Sail parade of tall ships in New York Harbor for the nation's bicentennial in 1976.

That July Fourth event was organized by Sea Cliff maritime historian and artist Frank Braynard. Later that year, he was made an honorary member of the Sea Cliff Yacht Club and decided to build on the popular Operation Sail by creating a sailing race around Long Island the following year with the help of club members Wes Bailey and Pete Bethge.

The trio arranged for Newsday to sponsor the first Around Long Island Regatta.

In the early years, the regatta started in Sheepshead Bay, with the finish at the breakwater in Hempstead Harbor by the yacht club. In the mid-1980s, when the race grew to more than 200 boats, the regatta began off the southern shore of Staten Island. (The number of boats competing has declined as the cost of boat ownership has increased significantly.)

The regatta moved back to Sheepshead Bay in 1996. It remained there until 2017, when the course was lengthened to 207 miles to have the boats start by the Statue of Liberty, so more people could see it. — Bill Bleyer

Sea Cliff Yacht Club inducts first female commodore

Over its 128-year history, the Sea Cliff Yacht Club has seen a multitude of changes, from its membership to its programming to its community service projects. One of its constants, however, has been male leadership. That changed last Saturday, when Robin Maynard was named the club’s first female commodore.

“It really, truly is an honor, and it was important to me also to be a role model,” Maynard said. “Boating is a male-driven sport, and it’s nice to push female boaters and female sailors [forward].”

Maynard, 48, said she has been a member of the club for 12 years, and has sat on its board in various capacities for the past decade. Although she grew up relatively far from the water, in West Orange, N.J., she said she has always been drawn to the ocean. Sea Cliff’s proximity to the water, she said, and her love of its Victorian architecture were what brought her to the village in 2000. Whether she is out on one of her three sailboats, her powerboat or her scull, she said, she feels at home on the water.

“Being on the water is just a special thing,” Maynard said. “It’s very relaxing. There’s no better view than sunset at the Sea Cliff Yacht Club.”

Although she began sailing several years before joining the club, Maynard said she became a member when her daughter, Samantha, was 2 because she wanted her to get involved in boating early. Samantha, now 15, rows competitively at the private Kent School in Connecticut.

Bringing rowing to the yacht club is one of Maynard’s goals. She also wants to improve the club’s beach area with new furniture, she said, and update its dining room.

While the coronavirus pandemic has made things difficult for the club and its 175 members, Maynard said it is very proactive in its health regulations. A committee of doctors has put a number of procedures in place, she said, including temperature checks, distancing of tables, thorough cleaning and limiting capacity, and a tent equipped with heaters will augment club capacity as the weather gets colder.

Harvey Bass, a member for 34 years who served as commodore from 2012 to 2014, said that Maynard has shown her dedication over the years as a board member. She has a strong operational background, Bass said, having served on a number of committees, and has even made financial contributions. Her ascension to commodore is a milestone, he said.

Maynard is a no-nonsense person who gets things done, Bass said, and is very inventive when it comes to creating events. For Halloween she created a “trunk-or-treat” event in which members decorated their vehicles and children made their way around the club parking lot collecting treats. She enjoys bringing the club’s families together for all sorts of programs.

“The Sea Cliff Yacht Club is year-round,” Bass said, “so you have to have a person who inspires people to come by the club even on those cold winter days that have nothing to do with sailing.”

Thirty-six year club member Doug Wefer, who was commodore from 2001 to 2003, said that women have played an important role in the club for years. It’s about time it had female leadership, he said, and Maynard’s devotion and energy make her the perfect choice. While some private yacht clubs are set in their ways, he said, Sea Cliff is more open-minded.

“Considering the role that women play in our club, doing everything, [and] all the volunteerism that there is,” Wefer said, “it’s appropriate that women also lead the club, so it’s great to see.”

Maynard, an attorney at Marchese & Maynard, is the village’s associate judge, and served on the village board in 2017 and 2018. “I think the more that you give back and the more that you’re involved in the community, the more fulfilling it is,” she said. “It’s also a good example to set for our children to be active in our community. I try to give back as much as I can.”

Sea Cliff Mayor Edward Lieberman said he has gotten to know Maynard well through her many contributions to the community, and described her as philanthropic and humble, a caring, devoted resident of the village. The yacht club could not have made a better choice for its first female commodore, Lieberman said, noting that her induction punctuated an eventful week in woman’s history, with Sen. Kamala Harris being elected the nation’s first female vice president.

“The year 2020 has now seen a fulfillment of the woman’s movement and the history of women’s suffrage,” Lieberman said, “that in the same week we have a woman vice president of the United States and a woman commodore of the Sea Cliff Yacht Club, both historical and inspiring places of leadership.”

SailAhead and the Sea Cliff Yacht Club:

In an extraordinary display of support and camaraderie, SailAhead recently partnered with the Sea Cliff Yacht Club to host an unforgettable event. The gathering, held at the picturesque Sea Cliff Yacht Club, marked a historic moment as SailAhead and the esteemed club collaborated for the first time, taking 25 veterans out on the open waters. This diverse group of heroes included Vietnam War combat veterans, as well as Purple Heart recipients from the conflict in Afghanistan. The event not only provided these veterans with an opportunity to experience the therapeutic power of sailing but also created an environment of support and healing.

The Yacht Club volunteered 7 sailboats, with skippers and crew to introduce the veterans to the world of sailing, and to continue the education for those who have participated in SailAhead events in the past. Unfortunately, one sailboat had to drop at the last minute due to engine problems. SailAhead brought three ribs to achieve the mission of photo taking, and boat jumping; a crucial part of our events. Boat jumping is when we pair a SailAhead crew-member with a veteran to go on each participating boat with our mates . This is a way to spread awareness about veteran suicide, and also to spread love and gratitude to each participant on every boat.

Setting Sail for Healing:

Against the stunning backdrop of the Sea Cliff Yacht Club, the event commenced with great enthusiasm and anticipation. As the veterans arrived, they were greeted by volunteers from both SailAhead and the yacht club, all of whom were eager to provide an unforgettable experience. The event began with a few short speeches that highlighted the importance of community efforts in helping veterans after transitioning out of military life. Retired US Army Ranger James Knuppenburg was the guest of honor, and spoke about being wounded in Afghanistan, as well as the crucial role his community played in helping him arrive to where he is today.

SailAhead events are as much about establishing community as they are about sailing. Veterans and sailors from all walks of life come together to go sailing, and spend quality time together out on the Long Island Sound. Most veterans and sailors who participate in one SailAhead event are bound to participate in more in the future.

Many veterans report a sense of loneliness after leaving the military, and are at the highest risk of suicide within a year of transitioning out of the military. It is critical for us to establish community for veterans to replace the one they lost after leaving the military. Sailing, like the military, relies on teamwork, and a squad-like dynamic among those working together on the same boat.

Healing Power of Sailing:

As the boats set sail, the transformative power of the sea became evident. The gentle rocking motion of the vessels, the soothing sound of waves crashing against the hulls, and the breathtaking beauty of the surrounding coastline created a serene and therapeutic environment. For many veterans, this experience served as a form of respite from the daily challenges they face. Sailing provided them with a sense of freedom, peace, and control—a stark contrast to the chaos of war or the physical and emotional burdens they carry.

Sailing is inherently therapeutic, and can be classified as " adventure therapy " which is a particularly effective method of fighting against post-traumatic stress.

The Sea Cliff Yacht Club volunteered skippers, sailors, and boats to take veterans out sailing.

Sea Cliff staff also participated in the event by preparing a BBQ as the veterans and sailors as they all returned ashore.

With their new 88  footer from the Double Deck range, Sunreef are unveiling an ultra-comfortable cruising catamaran built for an experienced boating family, and are confirming their ability to complete fully customized projects on the same timescale as production boats.

It took no more than 9 months for the Sunreef 88 DD, first announced at the 2016 Cannes boat show, to see its hulls hit the water in Gdansk, Poland.  Yet this is not just a well-honed semi-custom boat, but a brand new model in the range which is already known to connoisseurs and necessarily demanding owners. Having owned many of the best in English and Italian motor yachts, this family got into sailing with a beautiful 25 meter ketch.  The natural instability of a heeling monohull prompted them to ask Ian Sellers, their skipper, to think of another solution.  The choice of a sailing catamaran was a logical one: the space, stability, low draft, panoramic view and the economical running are irrefutable arguments for those who want XXL-sized comfort.  

A good average speed to cross the Atlantic or to reach new anchorages in the Caribbean islands after a beautiful summer season in the Mediterranean also guided their choice.  It simply remained to find a shipyard capable of satisfying the wishes of the owner.  With a budget of more than 4 million euros, this owner was looking for a boat that was not just ultra-equipped and of the highest quality, but a unit that was entirely made ...

Description.

The start of the ambitious Sunreef 88 Double Deck project was officially communicated during Sunreef Yachts’ press conference at the Cannes Yachting Festival 2016. After eight months of intensive work, the shipyard proudly announced the launch of this catamaran with a zealous, sporty look.

An experienced yachtsman switching from a massive motor yacht , the owner decided to commission the Sunreef 88 Double Deck to pursue a more stable navigation style with greater living space. Indeed, a challenging project for the shipyard’s engineering and design teams.

Nonetheless, this journey was destined to keep the promise of delivering a state-of-the art fully customized sailing catamaran from the start. To achieve the goal of building a seaworthy and dynamic catamaran, Sunreef Yachts’ team of naval architects conceived a completely new yacht design which seemed far sportier than the rest.

Same as all yachts within her range, the Sunreef 88 Double Deck too features a mezzanine level inside the saloon and a spacious master stateroom with a panoramic view in the bow part of the main deck. However, her superstructure was granted a more aerodynamic aspect. As a result, the 88-footer emphasis equally on both performance and luxury, offering over 300m² of living space and an outstanding sailing experience.

Despite this, the Sunreef 88 Double Deck remains a family-friendly yacht offering the best of comfort and safety. The innovative composite superstructure of the sailing yacht conceals a smart and functional layout with luxurious accommodations for eight guests and up to five crew members.

Upon the owners’ request, the interior decor of the Sunreef 88 Double Deck features exclusive natural materials: Chambord oak, linen, leather, natural stone, and quartz tiles – all contribute to the warm and welcoming atmosphere of the sailing yacht . The feeling of warmth was also achieved through applying numerous orange accents to the interiors – an important color for the owner’s family who consider it to be a symbol of energy.

New Sunreef 92 Double Deck Sailing Catamaran

From the same people who brought you the original Sunreef Yacht, comes the new Sunreef 92 Double Deck , with a new design which not only streamlines the deck house, but tops it with a giant 40 m 2 fly bridge.

This was inspired by similar designs found on other super yacht designs. In collaboration with K-Epsilon and Rivoyre Ingenierie , The Sunreef Naval Architecture Bureau has intensely studied performance and sea capabilities using state of the art CFD, computational flow dynamics to create the ultimate in catamaran luxury.

Using integrated stepped hull chins, the Sunreef 92 Double Deck catamaran increases interior space, without compromising performance. Now this yacht can accommodate up to 10 guests, in up to 5 double luxury suites, as well as a crew of four.

Sunreef’s 92 Double Deck also features a canoe style boom and carbon mast, one of this manufacturer’s specialties. How are they able to accomplish such feats? They added a new mezzanine floor, which includes a coffee table and lounge, located on the port side of the main deck dining area, freeing up more space below for larger cabins and storage space, or even more suites if you prefer.

Because of this innovative design modification, now the owner’s suite occupies two floors of the entire front area of this yacht, with a private luxury office, gym and leisure area on the upper level, with the bathroom, wardrobe and storage area below deck. Each cabin has an extended size, three way access to their King sized beds, with spectacular panoramic sea views. Not only this, but each luxury suite comes with its own separate bath and shower area, large closets, storage lockers, as well as their own air conditioning and a comprehensive entertainment system.

With a LOA of 27 meters, an 11.2m beam, and a 1.6m draft, this super yacht has a 80 ton displacement. It will also be powered by two 405HP 1200 L/3170 Gal engines, and will be able to cruise at speeds up to 15 knots. The 70m 2 cockpit will also include a large dining area, sunbathing mattresses, and diving equipment. Its spacious fly bridge is fitted with a jacuzzi, two wet bars, barbecue, ice makers and even a pair of jet skis. It will also include a tender, hidden in a specially built locker under the main sun pad of the cockpit.

Even though this is only the second of such models, it isn’t hard to see why the Sunreef 92 Double Deck sailing catamaran is on it’s way to be one of the most sought after luxury yachts. With it’s innovative design, state of the art electronics, and focus on luxury, the Sunreef 92 Double Deck is top of the line, and a must for people who may still think they have it all. A seafaring adventure on island routes double-decker catamaran cruise.

Embark on a luxury catamaran cruise adventure out of Ocho Rios, Jamaica that takes adventure to new heights.

Standing on the dock, I pause a moment to let my gaze travel slowly upwards at the gleaming catamaran floating before me. Rocking gently in the calm Caribbean Sea, the beautiful double-decker  Calipsoul  seems familiar yet exciting and new to me all at the same time. I had chosen Island Routes Catamaran Dunn’s River Cruise the last time I was in Ocho Rios, Jamaica. It had been the perfect combination of relaxation and excitement that I had been looking for. We had also done the romantic Lovers Rock evening cruise, literally sailing into the sunset together. Making the cruise reservation Both times it had turned out exactly as promised and this time around when I knew I was heading back to Jamaica, I reached out to the wonderfully helpful Island Routes team yet again. I spoke with them about how much I had enjoyed the last catamaran excursion I did with them and shared that this time I would be coming with a group of friends and family of all ages. I had enjoyed the snorkeling aspect of the Dunn’s River cruise so much but it had been fairly short and some of my group said they really wanted to let loose and relax.

Island Routes Reggae Family catamaran cruise They suggested the Island Routes Reggae Family catamaran cruise. They explained that it was like The Dunn’s River cruise minus the climbing, which my mom was happy to hear about, and a lot of time spent exploring the underwater world. Then they told me how great my timing was as they now have a brand new double-decker catamaran! To be honest, I couldn’t quite picture it so I didn’t know what to expect. Standing here, about to step onto the Calipsoul , I am filled with delight as the kids all leap aboard. We aren’t the only family on board that day and as my group is fairly large, coming over on the shuttle service from the Beaches all-inclusive family resort, I had been worried about feeling crowded. Yet, what we discover is the perfect blend of being able to find ample areas for ourselves while also having the opportunity to meet other people as equally excited as we are.

Snorkeling lesson Once in the water, we are directed by the crew, who have joined us, where to swim and, along the way, they make sure to point out coral formations and beautiful fish ensuring we have an amazingly immersive experience (pun intended). I explore for ages and I am very excited as I brought my waterproof camera with me this time and aim to meet my self-imposed challenge of taking an underwater selfie with tropical fish. Although unsuccessful because they move pretty quickly, I still have a blast. Suddenly, someone is tapping me on my shoulder and I pop my head up to see one of the crew members guiding me back to the boat. Making my way back I realize that, as strong a swimmer as I am, I’m pretty happy to have the life vest on as it allows me to keep looking underwater while I make my way back without having to put in too much effort in keeping myself headed in the right direction so all my focus is on the magical world below me. Trampoline for the kids, hammocks for the adults We climb aboard and the teenagers head to the trampoline area (I was told that’s what it’s called). For people who may not normally hang out on a boat, this area serves an engineering purpose but is also a pretty cool place to just hang out on as it’s like a flat stretched-out hammock where you can just lay out and chill. I divest myself of the fins, mask, and vest and realize I’m pretty hungry! Lunch on the ocean Luckily, the food comes out and everyone piles up their plates with tropical fruit, delicious wraps and chips, and salsa, and we head for a sunny spot on the upper deck of the catamaran. We start chatting with other people and decide it’s just about the right time for the rum version of that delicious fruit punch (after all we’re in Jamaica, how can we pass up the delicious rum when no one is driving or diving). My husband opts for a cold Red Stripe instead and leans back to work on his tan. Learning Jamaican dance moves We hear music and a lot of laughter below and realize the trampoline is empty. I decide to leave my husband happily tanning and I follow the music only to discover a full-blown dance class, as the crew is teaching everyone the latest Jamaican dancehall dance moves. Although I feel a little self-conscious when I join in, that quickly fades away as everyone tries their best to match the expertise of the crew. Over on the right, two little girls have their own crew member showing them what to do and they catch on quickly, delighted grins lighting up their faces. I manage to muddle through and I’m pretty sure my sister is going to show these videos to everyone once we get back home for an evening full of a similar level of laughter at my expense. In that moment though, I don’t care. I feel the salt from the sea drying on my skin, my hair is a tousled mess and I’m dancing with my children in the middle of the Caribbean Sea. This, I think, is what happiness is.

First Sunreef 88 double deck catamaran launched

The first hull in the Sunreef 88 range of double deck sailing catamarans has been launched in Gdansk for a European owner, the Polish yard has announced.

This fully personalised multihull superyacht measures 26.82 metres LOA and was styled inside and out by the in-house team at  Sunreef Yachts .

In a statement, the Polish yard added that the design of the Sunreef 88 is “a great display of the shipyard’s non-conformist attitude and a genuine example of an avant-garde sailing catamaran concept”.

Captain Ian Sellers added: "She is a beautifully crafted, fully customised transoceanic catamaran, with superb quality and finish."

The design brief was focussed on three key themes: luxury, performance and privacy. To this end, the Sunreef 88 features more than 300 square metres of living space — an impressive figure for a yacht of this size, proving that bigger isn't always better .

This two-deck sailing yacht will feature an extensive flybridge with a central helm station and plenty of al fresco dining and relaxation spaces. Back aft, the cockpit features a central dining table with seating space for ten guests as well as a second sunbed, making good use of the Sunreef 88's 11.2 metre beam.

The in-house design includes sporty and dynamic exterior lines, as well as a fully customised interior layout. Key features include a mezzanine level in the saloon and a main-deck owner's cabin , which boasts superb views out to sea through panoramic windows.

Auxiliary power comes from a pair of 425hp engines drawing on a total fuel capacity of 8,000 litres, while her total sailplan is in excess of 345 square metres.

Sunreef added that the designers drew inspiration for this single-masted sailing yacht from the 35 metre flagship yacht Che , which was launched in 2010. The Sunreef 88 is the sixth superyacht from the Polish yard, which has also created the Sunreef 102 yacht Ipharra .

There’s nothing quite like being welcomed by a beautiful choir of smiling faces, clapping and singing for your arrival, enveloping you in a traditional song that overflows with warmth and hospitality. This is no token gesture; it’s the moment you "become a life member of the Wakaya Club,”  Tiko, chief and mentor to Wakaya Club & Spa staff and the entire island community, told us.

As an extension of Wakaya Club's hospitality, we were invited to the private island’s small village, which is specifically built for Wakaya employees and their families.  At the community school, the children, like their parents, showered us in song and dance. Their energy was so infectious that it didn't take long before we were following their lead, twirling and side-stepping too.

Wakaya Club & Spa has been a sought-after luxury resort destination for many years, with a string of high-profile visitors (The Rolling Stones, Tom Cruise, Steph Curry) rocking up for exclusive access to infinity pool villas, "in-house" spas, and lush acres of private land. Our bure (Fijian for villa) was one of 10 luxury villas lining the waterfront. Here and throughout the properties, tropical elegance is achieved with cathedral ceilings, indigenous Yaka timber flooring, and sweeping verandas. Tradition meets contemporary luxury as floor-to-ceiling glass doors span the entire length of the villa, opening up to a breathtaking view of the palm tree–lined, pristine sandy beach and the expansive green lawn. Each bure offers 1,650 square feet of privacy, enveloped by beautiful landscaping which runs along each lawn all the way to the beach. 

Inside is a spacious living area with warm, natural tones running throughout. In every room the furniture is positioned to draw your attention out towards the view. In the master suite, a king-size canopy bed takes center stage and the gauzy drapes are carefully set back, framing the view of your own tropical paradise. Floor-to-ceiling glass walls are a recurring theme throughout and continue into a bathroom that allows nature to completely flow through it. This sanctuary brings outdoor bathing to you. An open-air lava rock shower bathed in natural light and a garden-facing tub invites a sanctum for relaxation. 

The resort's top suites come in the form of sprawling hilltop estates, ranging from $8,000 to 11,000 USD per night. Vale’O , meaning "House in the Clouds," and Sega Na Leqa ,  meaning "No Worries," both offer stunning panoramic ocean views, a wealth of entertainment possibilities, and a dedicated household staff. A world-class retreat and the resort's newest addition, Sega Na Leqa features a 125-foot infinity swimming pool, private guest house, and state-of-the-art luxury living spaces.

The island cooks what the island grows. Wakaya’s Authentic Fijian Culinary Program is married beautifully with the resort's pledge to sustainability. With ecological farming principles applied, over 60% of the produce landing on your plate is locally sourced from the on-site organic farm.

Eating at the flagship restaurant, The P a lm Grove, guests can expect a curated menu of Indian, Mediterranean, and Fijian flavors. From island-raised venison to locally sourced lobster, maitre d’ Heinrik does an impeccable job keeping guests satisfied, but remember to save space for the coconut bread. Pastry chef Kelera Cegu makes this buttery, sweet loaf as an accompaniment to breakfast. Lethally delicious, it became our favorite thing to smuggle from the table and snack on throughout the day. You can also enjoy meals at the beach house, Baravi Lai Lai, dine poolside, or take advantage of a beach cookout.

Experiences and Amenities 

Taking care of your every need comes naturally in Fijian hospitality. From dietary requirements to drink preferences to activities , whatever you desire is just one request away. Of course, the use of the gym, tennis courts, game room, and golf course are unlimited. However, guests may also opt to plan cultural activities including guided historical hikes, traditional weaving, or a Fijian lovo special occasion feast ahead of time. 

A highlight during our stay was being chauffeured to the southeastern side of the island for a secluded picnic. If you’ve ever imagined what the ultimate private beach dining experience would look like, this is it. Emerging through dense tropical forest, we arrived at Tuburua Beach. Distressed driftwood and seashells fringed the jungle, with fallen coconuts at our feet and frangipani flowers in my hair — truly romantic. Joey, our chauffeur, set out a woven beach rug, hammock, and plush cushions before leaving us on our own to bathe in the afternoon serenity. Our luxury lunch hamper of goodies included lobster pasta and gooey chocolate brownies.

At the start of our stay, we were invited to participate in a local custom known as the kava welcoming ceremony. A ritual to celebrate connection,  we were offered a plant-based drink (kava) served in a communal bowl. Throughout the centuries, this tradition has been about unity, and to this day, locals still sip it to honor special occasions such as weddings. As we took our seats, the chief, Tiko, began by relaying the rules for the sacred ritual. In turn, we were instructed to “clap, pick up the bowl, and drink.” A tribe leader dressed in ceremonial attire kneeled before me. I was mesmerized and distracted all at once, and completely forgot what I needed to do. “Pick up the bowl!” I could barely see his lips move, but I realized he was urging me to play my part. Hoping to hide the blush of embarrassment, I quickly gulped the herbal drink and thanked my lucky stars for the darkness. 

The next day we would continue to learn about the island's heritage while hiking the historic Chieftain's Leap. Our guide was Sonny, my tribal instructor from the previous night, and we quickly found ourselves chatting like old friends before he delved into the history and camaraderie that has shaped the island’s ethos. According to Sonny, the Island was taken at the hands of the Ovalau warriors in about 300 B.C. To avoid certain death, the Wakayan village chief jumped off a cliff at Double Bay. Out of loyalty, the villagers followed him. This is the Island's legacy, he told us. To this day, support, trust, and mentorship keep the community bonds tight.  

My masseuse welcomed me into Breeze , the onsite spa, and immediately guided me to a bowl of warm water infused with essential oils and flower extracts. Here, relaxation began with a nourishing foot scrub. Though there’s a myriad of treatments to choose from, I opted for the hot stone massage to ease tight muscles. Guests can further indulge with a dip in the body-temperature serenity pool followed by lazing on the lanai , an open-air veranda. The spa is located on the oceanfront, so expect to hear the calming sounds of waves in your moments of stillness.  

The Wakaya Marine Reserve is home to 16,000 square kilometers of sea life. From snorkeling alone, guests can expect front-row seats to a menagerie of coral fish, Hawksbill turtles, green back turtles, and hammerhead sharks. It's one of the best locations for regularly spotting manta rays, too.  

Wakaya is a resort that prides itself on conservation excellence, and Luke Gordon of The Manta Trust is part of a collective effort to help sustain and nurture the local environment. Spending time with Gordon and his team, we were treated to a snorkeling spectacle. This is a PADI five-star gold palm dive resort, so diving adventures are always accessible. We, on the other hand, enjoyed the marine life from a shallower depth. Schools of vividly colored fish were bountiful around us; we even saw reef sharks and an octopus swim through open water before camouflaging into the rock.

To keep these experiences vibrant and the animals healthy, Wakaya’s ecologists apply the latest technology and scientific research to rescue, rehabilitate, and rehome numerous species. With Gordon, who is also the resort's marine biologist, guests can get involved in some of these initiatives. We participated in coral farming, and Gordon demonstrated how some of the most endangered reef plants are being restored. 

The Location 

The Wakaya Club & Spa is a luxury retreat located north east of Viti Levu in the Ovalu group of islands. Recognized as an official marine reserve, it is known for hosting some of the world's best near-shore diving. Approximately five miles in length, this 2,200-acre island is a peaceful hideaway with ancient banyan trees, chalky white beaches, and wild deer. We visited during August and were met with a temperate climate ranging from the high 70s to low 80s, with a balmy breeze — and, I’m happy to say, warm waters. 

When you stay at Wakaya, you buy into exclusivity. You’ll witness Fijian elders shaping communities,  scientists nurturing both land and sea, and wildlife encounters that you just can't get in most parts of the world. This type of intimacy and connection starts with nightly rates of $2,500 USD for a garden-view bure. Prices include domestic air transfer; early morning (7 a.m.) check-in and late (4 p.m.) check out; all meals and beverages (both alcoholic and non-alcoholic); daily laundry; a massage; private beach picnic; one scuba dive per person; and much more. Russia's Nuclear Deterrent Command Center Imperiled by Winter Freeze—Report

A Russian nuclear deterrent command center in Moscow has been imperiled by power outages that have impacted more than one-quarter of the region's cities amid freezing temperatures, a Russian Telegram channel has reported.

The VChK-OGPU outlet, which purports to have inside information from Russian security forces, reported that the 820th Main Center for Missile Attack Warnings—part of the Russian Space Forces, a branch of the country's Aerospace Forces—near Solnechnogorsk in Moscow is without power.

It serves as the space forces early warning network against potential ballistic missile attacks.

The development comes as Russians are reported to be suffering from power outages in their homes in the Moscow region caused by technical issues at plants amid subzero temperatures.

On January 4, a heating main burst at the Klimovsk Specialized Ammunition Plant in the town of Podolsk, which is about 30 miles south of central Moscow. Since then, tens of thousands of Russians are reported to have no heating in their homes.

Affected areas include the cities of Khimki, Balashikha, Lobnya, Lyubertsy, Podolsk, Chekhov and Naro-Fominsk, a map published by a Russian Telegram channel and shared on other social media sites shows.

Other Russian media outlets reported that in Moscow, residents of Balashikha, Elektrostal, Solnechnogorsk, Dmitrov, Domodedovo, Troitsk, Taldom, Orekhovo-Zuyevo, Krasnogorsk, Pushkino, Ramenskoye, Voskresensk, Losino-Petrovsky and Selyatino are also without power.

The Telegram channel said that at the 820th Main Center for Missile Attack Warnings, "the crew...is on duty around the clock."

"It is here that the decision on a retaliatory nuclear strike is executed," the channel said.

Newsweek could not independently verify the report and has reached out to the Russian Defense Ministry by email for comment.

Power outages have also been reported in Russia's second-largest city, St. Petersburg, in the country's western Voronezh region, in the southwest city of Volgograd, and in Rostov, which borders Ukraine, a country that Russia has been at war with since February 24, 2022.

On Sunday, two shopping malls in St. Petersburg were forced to close because of problems with light and heating, reported local news outlet 78.ru. Hundreds of other homes in the city have had no electricity, water or heating for days amid temperatures of -25 C (-13 F).

Russian authorities have also been forced to compensate passengers of a train that ran from Samara to St. Petersburg (a 20-hour journey) without heating during -30 C (-22 F) temperatures. Videos circulating on social media showed carriage windows frozen over. A passenger also said the toilet didn't work during the trip because of frozen pipes.

Experienced european owners brought together a top team of Dubois, Fitzroy and Tessier to produce their dream yacht: sleek, sophisticated and impressive under sail.

The push for a single level between bridge, saloon and cockpit, combined with ultra-sleek aesthetics, nudged the Dubois design team into new territory. “To get good visibility from the helmstations we had to work hard to lower the accommodation as much as possible, while keeping an open feeling” adds McKeon.

The interior, styled and drawn by Remi Tessier , features a combination of bleached timbers and white leather which results in clean modern lines and provides bright comfortable living areas.

Fitzroy Yachts Zefira

The sea trial was pubblished on Superyacht 31 – spring 2012

Zefira S/Y is one of those few yachts that became an attraction for yacht enthusiasts and professionals  well before she hit the water.

This yacht was designed and built with the experience and passion for sailing boats her owners demonstrated from the start as well as a naval engineering and a project design team from  Ed Dubois studio for the exterior, while Remi Tessier was responsible for all the interiors. Zefira was built in a yard which enjoys a  worldwide  reputation for the construction of large sailing yachts.

With such an opening introduction one can expect nothing less than something absolutely extraordinary, where the term used must be read in its best meaning to underscore something that has really nothing of the ordinary. We had the pleasure of talking with the owners who are currently sailing on their yacht after they had  carried out important work in the design phase with the project team to define specific guidelines and details.

Beyond the highly involving dialogue which ensued with flowing examples  of their own sailing experience and passion, we managed to grasp and better understand the idea behind the project which began with a seven metre sloop and  gradually developed in the course of the following 40 years  of which  many were spent at  sea. Putting words to emotion and feelings is never easy to do and  more so when they are other people’s. In this case however everything was a lot easier for us   thanks to our interviewee’s eloquent communicative capability.

The first point our attention was brought to was that Zefira is the largest sailing y

acht ever designed by Dubois with no fly bridge and built by Fitzroy Yachts in New Zealand.  This may strike our readers as a mere detail, but it is in fact one of the principal fundamentals outlining this project because it translates into flowing external lines and a unique profile when observed sideways on.

The choice  of doing without a fly bridge is somewhat unusual since up until  recently a “fly” had been widely accepted as  a run of the mill thing to have on a sailing yacht beyond a given size, but which nevertheless, Zefira is proud to do without giving cause for, among others ,  the following comment volunteered by some of the designers not involved in the project: “The world of sailing now stands  divided between before Zefira and after Zefira”.

Naturally enough this comment in particular is aimed at the yachts’ profile, which brings to a standstill what had become a consolidated practice on yachts this size. Aesthetics is principally  why the owners decided to do without the fly option as well as for practical reasons  they eloquently highlighted: without one  on a  50 metre sailing boat  there’s a complete total view of both what lies ahead up to the horizon and of the sail plan.

Moreover using a higher windswept and sun scorched horizontal plane rather than the main deck itself is by its very nature something destined to be exploited only sporadically and quite correctly in their opinion doesn’t justify having one.

The thought behind the whole project as the requests submitted to both designers and yard indicated,  were to enjoy a pure thorough bred for its performing lines and technical contents, capable of offering the sort of space and commodities expected when cruising extensively in all weather conditions. At a first glance the goal seems to have been easily achieved, but if  we then go into an in-depth analysis, the comments volunteered by project designers earlier seems surely appropriate. The husband and wife team (the owners) followed up on construction work from the initial stages to completion, working through the more important phases in close contact with the professional teams involved.

According to the owners the best part was witnessing the step by step progress of such an enterprise. We can understand the reasons why and genuinely  hope that in  the future such desire will generate the construction of other such extraordinary ships.

Several International prizes for design and technical contents have been awarded to Zefira. Dubois Naval Architects’ studio is proud of the recognitions bestowed since this is the largest sailing yacht project without a “fly” they’ve ever made so far and also for the passion and creativity expressed time and time again by the owners who incidentally had been the previous owners of another Dubois  project built by Alloy Yachts: Kokomo of London (now Nubero Blau). The challenge taken on by the studio was one that meant blending the huge experience acquired by the owners to innovative aesthetics, with a hull capable of delivering the sea-keeping qualities and performance requested.

The owners wished for a boat that could be another home from home: spacious, with a project design that looked ahead into the future. For this reason the design team was invited by the owners to pay them a visit and to take a look at their house to better understand what they wanted.

The choice of the yard was principally dictated by delivery times even if Fitzroy Yachts had been chosen also in function of preceding work carried out from Dubois projects.

Among some of the clever solutions highlighted by the owners in the course of our conversation we wish to mention the ease in steering they experienced and handling the yacht, of course aided by electronics and important data communication systems capable of monitoring and performing many of the required manoeuvres without hindering visibility.

The rig which is capable of carrying up to 3,000 square metres of canvass is per se a very interesting technical achievement inasmuch as it sports a 63.50 metre mast and can still be defined as being “light”. Obviously there’s a carbon fibre mast and boom, as well as fibre stays that have been purposely chosen to reduce weight high above the waterline which translates into less draught and better performance in breezes.

All of the choices adopted for Zefira mean she is very competitive on the race track even against racers and  in spite of the many commodities she carries with her.  As for the interiors and  much of the work put in by  Remi Tessier designer and the co-owner they enhanced an undoubted feeling of both tranquillity and elegance.

Gauged chromatic variety  meets the discerning eye as it takes in lighter and darker shades of handcrafted woodwork placed without ever causing excessive contrast, followed by polished steel elements and ad hoc lighting which enhances relaxation throughout every area. The space chosen to house each piece of furniture, is fruit of  careful study that has contributed into ensuring an uncompromised degree of comfort in the owners’ suite which is situated in the stern and in each of the three guest cabins as well.

One is a twin while the other two are double each one of them sports its own private bathroom. The crew quarters are situated in the bow area and with space for a lounge and crew mess room, which translates into staff’s quality living standards on board. The yacht’s convivial areas are also well distributed and large to ensure adequate privacy to guests and owners alike.

The electronics and navigation aids installed are the most modern on the market, with data and alarm control systems and displays in each of the two external command /control stations  as well as on the bridge deck as can be expected on a state of the art ship such as this. Dictated by reasons of space we have to limit our text to that which has so far been described even when the meeting with Zefira’s owners was so stimulating  we were prompted  to go further.

The Dubois designed vessel was built to exceptional quality levels which continue the yards reputation for building award winning superyachts. Powered by a Caterpillar C32 1450 bhp main engine and a Hundested variable pitch propeller, the propulsion system provides long range motor sailing abilities. The 56 meter ‘light weight’ carbon fiber sailing rig was supplied by Southern Spars, and the sails inventory provided by North Sails.

Ma solo in pochi sono riusciti ad accorgersi della sua presenza in porto, che è durata giusto una mattinata . “ Zefira ”, imbarcazione di 50 metri vincitrice dei prestigiosi riconoscimenti internazionali “Show boats Design Award 2011” e di “World Superyacht Awards 2011” come miglior yacht a vela del mondo per il 2011, è rimasta attraccata presso la banchina Bengasi del molo Cortese di Vibo Marina per poche ore, impegnata in attività di bunkeraggio. Costruita in Nuova Zelanda nei cantieri Fitzroy, ha uno scafo in alluminio e una trave con un raggio di quasi dieci metri. Gli interni sono stati disegnati da Remi Tessier e possono ospitare otto ospiti in quattro cabine. For the first time Rosatom Fuel Division supplied fresh nuclear fuel to the world’s only floating nuclear cogeneration plant in the Arctic

The fuel was supplied to the northernmost town of Russia along the Northern Sea Route.

The first in the history of the power plant refueling, that is, the replacement of spent nuclear fuel with fresh one, is planned to begin before 2024. The manufacturer of nuclear fuel for all Russian nuclear icebreakers, as well as the Akademik Lomonosov FNPP, is Machinery Manufacturing Plant, Joint-Stock Company (MSZ JSC), a company of Rosatom Fuel Company TVEL that is based in Elektrostal, Moscow Region.

The FNPP includes two KLT-40S reactors of the icebreaking type. Unlike convenient ground-based large reactors (that require partial replacement of fuel rods once every 12-18 months), in the case of these reactors, the refueling takes place once every few years and includes unloading of the entire reactor core and loading of fresh fuel into the reactor.

The cores of KLT-40 reactors of the Akademik Lomonosov floating power unit have a number of advantages compared to the reference ones: a cassette core was used for the first time in the history of the unit, which made it possible to increase the fuel energy resource to 3-3.5 years between refuelings, and also reduce the fuel component of the electricity cost by one and a half times. The FNPP operating experience formed the basis for the designs of reactors for nuclear icebreakers of the newest series 22220. Three such icebreakers have been launched by now.

For the first time the power units of the Akademik Lomonosov floating nuclear power plant were connected to the grid in December 2019, and put into commercial operation in May 2020. The supply of nuclear fuel from Elektrostal to Pevek and its loading into the second reactor is planned for 2024. The total power of the Akademik Lomonosov FNPP, supplied to the coastal grid of Pevek without thermal energy consumption on shore, is about 76 MW, being about 44 MW in the maximum thermal power supply mode. The FNPP generated 194 million kWh according to the results of 2023. The population of Pevek is just a little more than 4 thousand, while the FNPP has a potential for supplying electricity to a city with a population of up to 100 thousand people. After the FNPP commissioning two goals were achieved. These include first of all the replacement of the retiring capacities of the Bilibino NPP, which has been operating since 1974, as well as the Chaunskaya TPP, which has already been operating for more than 70 years. Secondly, energy is supplied to the main mining companies in western Chukotka in the Chaun-Bilibino energy hub a large ore and metal cluster, including gold mining companies and projects related to the development of the Baimsk ore zone. In September 2023, a 110 kilovolt power transmission line with a length of 490 kilometers was put into operation, connecting the towns of Pevek and Bilibino. The line increased the reliability of energy supply from the FNPP to both Bilibino consumers and mining companies, the largest of which is the Baimsky GOK. The comprehensive development of the Russian Arctic is a national strategic priority. To increase the NSR traffic is of paramount importance for accomplishment of the tasks set in the field of cargo shipping. This logistics corridor is being developed due regular freight voyages, construction of new nuclear-powered icebreakers and modernization of the relevant infrastructure. Rosatom companies are actively involved in this work. Rosatom Fuel Company TVEL (Rosatom Fuel Division) includes companies fabricating nuclear fuel, converting and enriching uranium, manufacturing gas centrifuges, conducting researches and producing designs. As the only nuclear fuel supplier to Russian NPPs, TVEL supplies fuel for a total of 75 power reactors in 15 countries, for research reactors in nine countries, as well as for propulsion reactors of the Russian nuclear fleet. Every sixth power reactor in the world runs on TVEL fuel. Rosatom Fuel Division is the world’s largest producer of enriched uranium and the leader on the global stable isotope market. The Fuel Division is actively developing new businesses in chemistry, metallurgy, energy storage technologies, 3D printing, digital products, and decommissioning of nuclear facilities. TVEL also includes Rosatom integrators for additive technologies and electricity storage systems. Rosenergoatom, Joint-Stock Company is part of Rosatom Electric Power Division and one of the largest companies in the industry acting as an operator of nuclear power plants. It includes, as its branches, 11 operating NPPs, including the FNPP, the Scientific and Technical Center for Emergency Operations at NPPs, Design and Engineering as well as Technological companies. In total, 37 power units with a total installed capacity of over 29.5 GW are in operation at 11 nuclear power plants in Russia. Machinery Manufacturing Plant, Joint-Stock Company (MSZ JSC, Elektrostal) is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of fuel for nuclear power plants. The company produces fuel assemblies for VVER-440, VVER-1000, RBMK-1000, BN-600,800, VK-50, EGP-6; powders and fuel pellets intended for supply to foreign customers. It also produces nuclear fuel for research reactors. The plant belongs to the TVEL Fuel Company of Rosatom.
