1884 Rice Lake Sailing Canoe
This canoe that was made for my grandfather in 1884. Originally it was a Rice Lake Sailing Canoe. The bow had a hole for the mast and I assume there were out riggers. In the 50-60s fiber glass was put on the outside. The inside is original. 16 1/2 ft long 33 inches wide 115 lbs (approx).

Saint John Paul II
M/V Saint John Paul II, delivered to Virtu Ferries in February 2019, by shipbuilders Incat Tasmania, has been selected for the prestigious notation “Significant Ship 2018”, by the highly respected Royal Institute of Naval Architects (RINA). The Institute was founded in London in 1860, with the aim of advancing “the art and science of ship design.” Members of the Institute occupy positions of high standing in the maritime industry worldwide, including universities and leading maritime institutions. RINA publishes a highly select annual list describing the most innovative and important commercial vessel designs delivered during the year by shipyards worldwide. Saint John Paul II was also awarded the “Ship of the Year 2020” in the High-Speed Ferry Category by the Cruise and Ferry Review pubblication.
The standard, well-tried, INCAT Wavepiercer Hull design was modified after extensive hydrodynamic model trials in the state-of-the-art UK Ministry of Defence Ocean Basin Research Facility in Gosport Hampshire. M/V Saint John Paul II complies with the International Maritime Organisation HSC Code 2000 rules, as amended, the Malta Flag Statutory Requirements, Italian Port State Rules and EU Directive 1999/35/EC.
Saint John Paul II started operating on the Malta-Sicily route in March 2019, in practical ever-day terms bringing Malta closer to Europe. The vessel carries 900 passengers and 167 vehicles, equivalent 490 Truck Lane Meters, allowing for 23 trailers, commercial and other heavy vehicles. At a cruising speed of 38 knots (70.4 km per hour) the Saint John Paul II makes the crossing in approximately 90 minutes.
Virtu have been operating a scheduled high speed ferry service between Malta and Sicily since 1988 and commissioned the Saint John Paul II specifically for the Malta Channel route. Passengers can look forward to travelling to our closest neighbour, Sicily, in six luxury lounges, with a design based on twenty eight years of surveyed passenger feedback. The Club Class lounge is on the Bridge Deck. The five other lounges are on the Main Deck, one forward and aft, another two amidships on the port and starboard sides, and a designated truckers lounge with additional facilities, after a hard day’s work. Outside seating is provided on both passenger decks.
Virtu is a 100% Maltese owned company and it is with pride that all Virtu vessels, including Saint John Paul II, fly the Malta Flag and are managed in-house by the company’s marine technical department.

New catamaran service from Malta to Sicily as from August
LA VALLETTA (MALTA) (ITALPRESS/MNA) – A new, fast ferry catamaran service from Valletta, Malta to the port of Augusta in Sicily will start operating every day from August, 6. The catamaran, HSC Artemis, will bring more competition in the market, with Ponte Ferries as a second operator along with Virtu Ferries. The high-speed craft has the flexibility to shuttle more than 717 passengers between Malta and Sicily, and to carry 245 cars, or 15 road freight trailers plus 180 cars. The 96 metre catamaran was operating in the Canary Islands and has recently been overhauled and refitted by Fred Olsen, a leading ferry operator in Spain that specializes in inter-island routes aboard high-speed vessels. Augusta, is located less than 30 minutes away from Catania. A spokesperson for Ponte Ferries said: “We are delighted to bring much-needed competition to this market in time for the peak holiday season. Our vessel offers great value and has the added advantage of berthing in Augusta, which is just a short drive away from Catania, Syracuse, the shopping outlets and Taormina”. One-way trips are on sale for 9.99 at a starting price. Ponte Ferries is a Maltese joint venture between Magro Brothers Investments Ltd and Merill Invest Ltd. (ITALPRESS).

L’unica compagnia di navigazione che assicura il collegamento tra la città ragusana e l’isola di Malta è la Virtu Ferries che copre la distanza tra i due porti con 12 collegamenti settimanali . Tutte le tratte sono coperte in una durata pari a 1 ora e 45 minuti con alcuni giorni della settimana nei quali sono previsti due collegamenti, uno diurno e uno serale. Più precisamente il lunedì, mercoledì e venerdi la tratta viene coperta al mattino con un traghetto in partenza alle 9:15 e arrivo alle 11:00 mentre di sera parte alle 21:30 e arriva alle 23:15. Il martedì, il giovedì e il sabato il collegamento tra i due porti è previsto solo in serata con il traghetto che segue gli stessi orari dei giorni precedenti, mentre la domenica sono previsti nuovamente due collegamenti giornalieri quello serale che parte al consueto orario mentre l’altra tratta prevede la partenza alle 13:30 e arrivo alle 15:15 a Malta.

Il martedì, giovedì, sabato e domenica è fissata un’unica partenza al giorno alle ore 21:30 (eccetto la domenica, quando il traghetto parte alle 19:30). - Da Catania , prendere l’autostrada A18 in direzione di Siracusa e uscire al casello di Rosolini e seguire le indicazioni per Pozzallo.
- Da Palermo , prendere l’autostrada A19 e poi l’autostrada A18, uscire al casello di Rosolini e seguire le indicazioni per Pozzallo.
Una volta arrivato a Pozzallo, è importante seguire le indicazioni per il porto e cercare un parcheggio a pagamento. Earlier today, the Times of Malta confirmed that Maltese businessman Paul Gauci has secured a multi-million deal, making him the new owner of the Marina di Ragusa in Sicily.
The news also suggested that a new daily catamaran service between Malta and Sicily will start by summer 2023, with a commute time of one hour and 45 minutes.
In fact, the catamaran, which goes by the name of Ragusa Express, was spotted docked at a Maltese shipyard last October, leading many to speculate that a new Ragusa to Malta route will be launched.
The ferry purchased by Paul Gauci will be able to take up to 430 passengers, 21 cars or 65 motorcycles.
Virtu Ferries is currently the only other company operating between Malta and Sicily, travelling from Valletta to Pozzallo.
Ponte Ferries was also operating between Malta and Augusta but has temporarily stopped its operations with no indication of when it’s returning.
