Zekelman Industries has been identified as the buyer of movie mogul Steven Spielberg’s Seven Seas, a so-called ‘superyacht’ which went on the market earlier this year. Already renamed Man of Steel, the 2010-built luxury cruiser was listed for sale at a cool US$158 million (C$202 million).

It’s a 282-foot (86-metre) floating palace of sleek elegance. There’s a helipad, swimming pool and jacuzzi on the deck; cinema; gym and massage, sauna and steam rooms; nine cabins, including owner’s suite with private deck and a VIP stateroom. There’s room for 20 guests and crew quarters for 28 staff to serve them while afloat.

An elevator carries occupants to the various decks, adorned in teak and other exotic materials. The yacht carries two custom-built tenders — a 30-foot open sport boat and 34-foot “limousine” boat.

With an estimated top speed of 20 knots (37 km/h), it has a cruising range of 5,200 nautical miles (9,630 km) at 16 knots.

It’s the latest “Man of Steel” incarnation for the steel magnate who lives in Lakeshore and whose father Harry Zekelman founded steel tube manufacturer Atlas Tube in Harrow in 1984.

His first superyacht to carry the Man of Steel name was a 121-foot (37-metre) Heesen 3700 purchased in 2005. That was followed three years later by another Heesen Yachts custom build, a 160-foot (49-metre) vessel which was the Dutch company’s biggest boat at the time. They kept getting bigger, with a 2019 purchase of another Heesen, this one 163-footer (50-metre).

In the world of superyachts, size appears to matter, with ever-bigger and more luxurious private vessels being churned out for the world’s uber-wealthy.

Alas, the really super superyachts are reserved for the really rich billionaires, folks like Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich, whose 523-foot Eclipse came with a “developmental cost” of just over US$1 billion. And that 2010-built superyacht is now only the third-largest private yacht among the global elites, with most of these elite owners preferring to sail in anonymity.

The same Dutch company — Oceanco — that built the latest incarnation of Man of Steel is currently building a half-billion-dollar 127-metre superyacht for the richest man in the world, Amazon’s Jeff Bezos.

Something handy for the owners of Oceanco-built vessels is the company’s “rapid response team” that will fly out anywhere to help out with any sudden servicing needs.

It’s a good time to be one of the world’s more than 2,700 billionaires, an exclusive club that now sits atop net wealth of US$13 trillion (C$17 trillion). Nearly all of them experienced big boosts in earnings during the global pandemic; several have just started tourism ventures for wealthy travellers in space; and, just this week, one of their own — Elon Musk — was named Time magazine Person of the Year.

Fresh from his sale to Zekelman, Spielberg, a billionaire entertainment industry mogul known for directing and producing a long list of Hollywood blockbusters, is also moving up. Construction is underway on his next 358-foot (109-metre) private superyacht. According to Club Yacht, Spielberg would rent out Seven Seas when he didn’t need it, with up to 12 guests at a time paying just over US$1 million per week to cruise the Caribbean in luxury.

Barry Zekelman, frequently in the news with wife Stephanie for their many philanthropic activities, has not been specifically identified as the new owner, but he’s the head of purchaser Zekelman Industries, and he was named in November as the new skipper by yachting publication sites as well as Forbes and Bloomberg news services.

Zekelman, whose wealth was most recently pegged by Forbes at US$2.3 billion (C$3 billion), could not be reached for comment.

MAN OF STEEL yacht interior

The interior of the MAN OF STEEL yacht includes a fully equipped gym, a spa, a beach club, a movie theatre, a beauty salon, a dance floor, and of course, a glass elevator that connects the different levels of the yacht.

The gym is arguably one of the most impressive parts of this superyacht as it has floor-to-ceiling windows providing great views from one of the upper decks of the vessel.

This allows guests to have a beautiful view of not only the pool below but also the breathtaking scenery this yacht might pass when underway.

The private owners’ deck offers a fantastic state-of-the-art master bedroom with its own dressing room as well as an attached office or study. This suite includes its own private deck area with a sizable jacuzzi perfect for relaxing and drinking a glass of wine under starry skies.

The six additional luxurious suites can accommodate 12 additional guests allowing the MAN OF STEEL to welcome up to 14 guests in total who are tended to by 23 crew members. The MAN OF STEEL interior was designed by Nuvolari & Lenard and Molly Isaksen and is equipped with exquisite furniture made of walnut, teak, and rosewood, accented with natural materials and fabrics.

The design of the yacht interior is simple yet classy, with clean and minimalist spaces. Wooden furnishings can be found in all parts of the vessel, although the interior is not as opulently furnished and decorated as other superyachts in its price category.

Nuvolari & Lenard is a renowned design duo that specializes in traditional yacht design for vessels between 25 and 185 meters in length. Their aim is to redefine beauty while keeping classical elements in mind.

In collaboration with the American interior designer Molly Isaksen, they created a one-of-a-kind fusion of naval architecture, incorporating contemporary and traditional elements in the interior of this beautiful vessel. The MAN OF STEEL offers a 250 square feet semi-covered sundeck, which is located adjacent to the main salon that provides enough space for larger events and celebrations aboard the vessel. A crew of 23 members of staff offers an excellent 5-star service and fulfills every possible wish of the guests onboard the MAN OF STEEL superyacht.

With excellent fine dining capabilities and luxurious amenities, this yacht is ideal for private ownership as well as high-end charter service.

Yacht specifications

The MAN OF STEEL has a length of 86 meters (282.15 ft) with a beam of 14.2 meters (46.6 ft) and a draft of 3.91 meters (13 ft).

She was built by Oceana in Alblasserdam, the Netherlands using mainly steel and aluminum which is their specialty. MAN OF STEEL was completed and delivered to Steven Spielberg in 2010. The yacht has her main port in George Town, the capital of the Cayman Islands, under whose flag she sails and she has been spotted as far south as the port of Puerto Escondido . With a weight of 2.658 tons and an output of 6,984 kW (9,496 hp), the MAN OF STEEL can reach top speeds of 20 knots.

Her maximum range lies at 4,750 nautical miles, which is respectable considering her size.

Yacht exterior

Designed by Azure Naval Architects and styled by Nuvolari & Lenard, the MAN OF STEEL yacht combines exceptional craftsmanship with unique outlines. The hull of the ship is set in an elegant dark blue, while the upper decks were left in the traditional brilliant white that many yachts bear. On the aft deck, you will find an impressive infinity pool with an incredible 4.6 meter (15 ft) glass wall, which doubles as a movie screen if required. The aft has another slightly smaller pool as well as a sizable deck with comfortable seating. This deck can be used as a helipad for smaller aircraft allowing guests to arrive in style. When this area isn’t needed for landing purposes, it can be covered completely by large awnings providing additional shade to guests.

Toys and equipment

A yacht this size naturally comes with lots of toys and equipment to entertain the guests onboard.

The MAN OF STEEL carries four jet skis, several sea bobs, kayaks, paddleboards, snorkeling equipment, and much more.

The two tenders onboard the vessel are always ready to take the guests to the mainland or to the nearest secluded beach.

Spielberg purchased them from Hodgdon Yachts, a shipyard based in Maine in the United States after MAN OF STEEL was delivered in 2010.

The larger of the two tenders, the Limo, has space for twelve people with luxurious leather upholstery, flatscreen television, and air conditioning.

When the weather is nice, the roof of the tender can be lifted and opened using hydraulics.

Additional information

In 2013 MAN OF STEEL was overhauled and refitted by Amico & Co, a well-known superyacht repair and design company.

The shipyard is based in Genoa, Italy, and has a 60,000 m² dock and operating area where work on both smaller and larger vessels can be carried out.

Heavy Breaking news

Barry Zekelman is a Canadian billionaire who owns steels plants both in Canada and in the United States. Most of his business is in the United States. That’s why, according to the New York Times , Zekelman has been lobbying hard for protectionist policies for steel makers in the United States.

The Times reported that some of Zekelman’s lobbying activities may have “skirted” or even violated the law. Zekelman has high praise for President Trump and his policies.

Zekelman’s net worth has been estimated at 3.46 billion, making him the 24th richest person in Canada. He and his wife, Stephanie, live a lavish lifestyle and own homes around the world. Here’s what you need to know about Barry Zekelman:

1. He & His Wife Have Met With President Trump & Members of the Trump Family as Part of a Lobbying Campaign to Protect US Steelmakers

The New York Times reported that last year, Zekelman and his wife took part in a “small dinner” with President Trump and his eldest son, Donald Trump Jr. Zekelman told the Times that they had talked about quotas that the United States was planning to impose on steel imports from South Korea. South Korea is a key competitor in the field of steel.

Zekelman later praised the president for his policies. “He’s attacking the problems that should have been attacked for many years,” Mr. Zekelman, 52, said of Mr. Trump in an interview.

He told Canadian broadcaster CBC that Trump’s plans for a 25 percent tariff for steel and 10 percent for aluminum was an example the Canadian government should follow. He added that in his opinion, the tariffs could be even higher.

“Is that 25 percent duty enough? I don’t think it is and I actually think those duties should be much higher,” he said.

2. His Company, Zekelman Industries, Donated $1.75 Million to Support Trump Last Year

CBC News Alerts

Canadian steel exec blasts Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland for not finding a steel and aluminum tariff solution. ‘They have stalled and blown this big time,’ Barry Zekelman told MPs this week. ‘This can be solved. Literally, I can do it this afternoon.’ t.co/PqDFs93OuK

The Times reports that in 2018 Zekelman Industries, the company owned by Barry Zekelman, donated $1.75 million to a fund intended to support Donald Trump. The Times says that the donations may have been a violation of laws that bar foreigners for lobbying in the United States. Still, it’s not quite clear whether Zekelman actually violated the law.

Zekelman and his brother took over the company from his father after his father’s death. Barry Zekelan was just 19 when his father, Harry died.

3. Zekelman & His Wife Own a Vacation Home in Paradise, Arizona & Another Vacation Home in the Caribbean

Zekelman and his wife Stephanie live on the Ontario side of Lake St. Clair , just across from Detroit. They also own several luxurious vacation homes outside of Canada. Their vacation home in Paradise Valley set a record for private home sales in Arizona; the 10,000 square foot home cost $14 million. They also own a vacation home in the Caribbean.

Zekelman was a freshman in college when his father Harry passed away, leaving his newly-formed steel tubing business, Atlas, to Barry and his older brother, Alan. Zekelman said he was glad to have a chance to leave college and jump into the steel industry. He described his experience as difficult but exciting:

“In 1986 after my father died and my brother and I went to help the business, Atlas was not in great shape. But a few of the older employees helped the ‘young ones’ along, and we were able to turn around a company that had been losing about $80,000 a month. To recover, we adopted a formula of ‘buy for X and sell for Y’ that after only eight months allowed us to make our first monthly profit of $4,000. And we thought that was great.”

46-foot Skater: Strong Personality

Barry gets a little rambunctious around the water! That’s the warning Barry Zekelman’s father used to issue to friends who took his young son along on their South Florida vacations.

“I guess I’m still that way!” laughs Zekelman, recalling his early love for the water-and for speed. “I used to race motocross, cars-I’m still a car fanatic- it’s the adrenaline, the rush!” says the man who owns various Ferrari Enzos, Lamborghinis, Porsches, and Mercedes- in addition to a new 50-foot Outerlimits catamaran with turbine power.

Man of Steel , as the Outerlimits is also known, and its Z-emblem have been Zekelman’s on-water identity for the past 18 years, as his business is Atlas Tubing, the largest manufacturer of steel tubing on the continent. Other aptly named boats in his fleet have included 39-foot and 63-foot Sea Rays, a 75-foot Sunseeker, an 88-foot Leopard, a 92-foot Mangusta, and a 123-foot Heesen-before the new 164-footer. And that’s not counting a 35-foot Cigarette Café Racer, 42-foot Aronow, 42-foot Comanche, and two 46-foot Skaters.

“I’m still very loyal to Peter [Hledin of Douglas Marine, manufacturer of Skater catamarans] but the timing wasn’t right,” says Zekelman. “I wanted something different and the closed-canopy Outerlimits with turbines seem to fit. I got passed by a turbine boat in a Poker Run.” With maybe a tad of competitiveness, he decided to power this new boat with Lycoming helicopter engines, capable of speeds over 200 mph.

“I like the torque, pick-up, and acceleration, even more than the top-end speed,” says Zekelman, but considering his last state-of-the-art 46-foot Skater had 1,500-horsepower Sterling Performance engines, it seems safe to say that “top end” is still a factor in this Man of Steel ‘s performance choices.

But Zekelman is a true family boater- not just a go-fast enthusiast. The luxury yacht and the speedy powerboat are two aspects of his zeal.

“I just love being out on the water-I don’t care if it’s in the yacht, a boat, or a Sea-Doo!” he says. “The big boat stays in the islands-that’s to clear my head and to relax. But the speedboats stay behind my house (on Lake St. Clair, across from Detroit, in Windsor, Canada). I love the convenience-we just drop it in the water, go for a run, put it back on the lift, and jump in the pool!”

Weekends are for family, so his wife Stephanie and two children are used to the dual boating lifestyles. “They’re two different things and they like them both,” Zekelman says. The powerboat has tremendous visual appeal with its own personality. “ Man of Steel is a superhero-he’s unstoppable, nobody can beat him, and he’s out for justice!” is how Zekelman describes the character he presents to painters for inspiration as they create his theme boats. Dean Loucks of The Art of Design in Elkhart, Indiana, took on the most recent design and paint challenge for Zekelman, including a Peterbuilt tow truck for boat transportation to select recreational events. Though this boat was designed as a showstopper, Zekelman talks about his spectacular boat modestly. “I don’t need to go out and show off, this is just for me!” he says, “I gave Dean a lot of freedom-he’s a very creative guy and I’m very pleased!”

who owns superyacht man of steel

At press time, the boat was undergoing testing at Turbine Marine in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, where Zekelman will do some seat time to “dial it in.”

“I don’t want to get out there without getting to know turbines,” he said. Then it will be back to northern Michigan, where Zekelman finds a brief escape from the everyday-where he can don his Z-emblem speedster like a $2 million costume and become Man of Steel -if only for a few stolen hours with his family. There is justice in that and yes, Barry is still rambunctious around the water!

Seven Seas Yacht

Man of steel yacht.

Steven Spielberg sold his yacht Seven Seas for $ 151 million, now renamed Man of Steel

Steven Spielberg, famous film maker, sold his super yacht Seven Seas for $ 151 million and the yacht is now renamed to Man of Steel.

Seven Seas, one of the most famous names in the superyacht world, was designed and built over a decade ago to the specifications of a renowned director. But since the richest people in the world have never been satisfied with a particular "toy" like a yacht or a luxury car, it is time for this magnificent vessel to delight its new owner with its incredible space and comfort.

Earlier this year, it was reported that Spielberg's iconic luxury yacht had gone on sale for $ 161 million. It won't be long before someone gets their hands on this magnificent vessel, fully equipped with everything you could want in a "home away from home", but also designed for transatlantic travel. go almost anywhere.

who owns superyacht man of steel

Built by the Dutch shipyard Oceanco, known for its surprisingly expensive models, this 282-foot (86-meter) yacht can accommodate 20 guests and 28 crew in nine cabins. Some of its most notable features are the two spas, swimming pools, Jacuzzi, fully equipped gymnasium and of course the famous cinema, perfect for any movie buff on board. Its elegant interiors, designed by Nuvolari & Lenard / Molly Isaksen, are as extravagant as a five-star hotel, using neutral tones and precious materials.

In addition to beauty and a high level of comfort, Seven Seas is also designed to withstand long journeys in remote areas. With steel frame and two MTU motors of 4680 HP. each, this massive boat can reach a top speed of 19.5 knots (22 mph / 36 km / h) at a cruising speed of 15 knots (17 mph / 27.7 km / h).

According to the Individual Yacht Brokerage website, the Seven Seas was sold for an undisclosed amount, but the last sale price was reduced to $ 151 million. With a new owner (perhaps no less famous), a new name emerges. The "Seven Seas" chapter is over, but the story of the Man of Steel has only just begun.

About the Man of Steel

Man of Steel is a luxury yacht 86 m long. It was built by Oceanco in 2010. With a beam of 14.02 m and a current of 3.96 m, it has a steel body and an aluminum superstructure. This total comes to a gross tonnage of 2,658 tons. It is powered by 4680 horsepower engines each, giving it a maximum speed of 20 knots and a cruising speed of 15 knots. The motor yacht can accommodate 12 people in 7 cabins. The yacht was designed by Nuvolari & Lenard.

Does this 357-Foot New Yacht Belong to Steven Spielberg?

Oceanco is keeping details of the mammoth vessel’s owner under wraps.

By Irenie Forshaw

Steven Spielberg yacht

Oceanco is used to catering for the fabulously wealthy; earlier this year the Dutch shipbuilder delivered Jeff Bezos’s gleaming new ship , Koru. Now, the rumor mill is going into overdrive once again. This time, Steven Spielberg is reportedly the billionaire behind its newest yacht: Seven Seas.

Spanning 357 feet, the mammoth motoryacht isn’t as long as Koru – which scooped the title of the longest sailing yacht on the planet at 417 ft – but she does cut an impressive figure. This isn’t Spielberg’s first foray into the yachting world – the Hollywood director had his first ship (also called Seven Seas ) delivered by Oceanco back in 2010.

The original Seven Seas – whose name is inspired by Spielberg’s seven children – measured 282 feet and boasted an expansive spa , gym, beauty salon, and, of course, movie theatre. But the four-time Academy Award winner sold the ship to Canadian billionaire Barry Zekelman in 2021 for a cool $151m (the ship has since been renamed Man of Steel).

It seems Spielberg has caught the superyacht bug; the new Seven Seas is even bigger and more lavish than her predecessor. So, what do we know about the director’s latest ship? While Oceanco has remained relatively tight-lipped on the project, a few key details have emerged which we’ll dive into here.

Who is building Steven Spielberg’s new yacht?

Spielberg yacht Seven Seas

The superyacht – previously known as project Y720 – was commissioned back in 2022 for a whopping $250m. She was built by Oceanco – the same shipyard that made Spielberg’s old boat in Alblasserdam, a town in the western Netherlands around 12 miles from Rotterdam. Omani billionaire businessman Mohammed al Barwani bought the luxury shipyard back in 2010 (he also owns Turquoise Yachts in Istanbul).

How to Design an Amazing Superyacht Interior

Oceanco has an impressive track record when it comes to building jaw-dropping superyachts. As well as recently unveiling Bezos’s Koru, four years ago the shipbuilder delivered Black Pearl – a striking three-mast vessel which, at 350 ft, became the largest sailing yacht in the world at the time, and garnered attention for its cutting-edge eco-credentials.

What do we know about the design?

steven spielberg yacht

Oceanco collaborated with Dutch firm Sinot Yacht Architecture Design to build Spielberg’s new yacht. The project was overseen by Lateral Naval Architects, with the team carrying out an “extensive optimization process” to ensure Seven Seas met the highest performance standards (she is the first LY3-compliant yacht to feature a Marine Evacuation System).

Powered by twin MTU 20V 4000 M73L diesel engines, she is able to reach top speeds of up to 20 knots and weighs in at 4,444 GT. Her sleek steel hull, teak deck, and lightweight aluminum superstructure give her a graceful silhouette; this is certainly a yacht to turn heads.

Considerably larger than Spielberg’s former yacht, Seven Seas 2.0 can host up to 14 guests across seven cabins (so there’s plenty of space for his entire family). There’s also room onboard for up to 30 crew, plus a gym, pool, spa, beach club, helipad and tender garage. Oh, and there’s a movie theatre too. Obviously.

The fourth largest project delivered by Oceanco to date, she was glimpsed for the first time in March 2022 being rolled out of the construction shed at the shipyard and was spotted in the Port of Gibraltar in early July.

How about the interiors?

Spielberg yacht exterior

It’s extremely unlikely we’ll get to see inside Spielberg’s new yacht anytime soon, but we do know the interiors onboard Seven Seas have been crafted by Beverly Hills-based designer Molly Isaksen (in a telling sign she was also brought in for the interiors onboard Man of Steel ).

While details remain sparse, Oceanco did reveal we can expect plenty of “natural materials and glass onboard, offering guests an unparalleled outward-looking experience”.

Pittsburgh River Rescue arrests man after he allegedly stole a yacht on the Allegheny River

By Patrick Damp , Barry Pintar

Updated on: June 21, 2024 / 6:23 PM EDT / CBS Pittsburgh

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- One person is in custody after stealing a yacht on the Allegheny River in Pittsburgh

At around 6 a.m. Friday morning, a marina manager called the captain of a yacht that was supposed to be moored at dock in the strip district and told him his yacht was missing. The captain then called 911 and reported his yacht stolen.

According to Pittsburgh Public Safety, just before 8 a.m., River Rescue responded to the report. According to court paperwork, Michael Fischer broke into the Lock Wall Marina off 23rd Street in the Strip District.

Police said he boarded and unmoored an 82-foot yacht, but he was unable to turn on the engine. He floated down the river and the yacht ultimately came to a rest along the river wall about 50 yards from the Pittsburgh River Rescue boathouse.

River Rescue boarded and detained Fischer, who they said was intoxicated. He was cleared by EMS and was taken to the Allegheny County Jail.

According to court paperwork, Fischer said, "I took the boat I wanted to meet some Pittsburgh Pirates."

Captain Adam Kernohan was out Friday making checks to the yacht after it was returned to its original docking place. He said there was some sort of party, judging by the conditions.

"Well we know it was a homeless person, we do know that," Kernohan said. "We love this city, and to have the homeless just feel that they can go ahead and just grab anything that they want and just drift away and sail away on whatever they want is ridiculous."

Kernohan says it was definitely not just one person who boarded the yacht and stole it. He says he's basing that on the amount of the yacht's food, drinks and alcohol that was stolen, not the mention the way he says they trashed the entire boat, including the engine room.

"The problem is is how did they get on here? Did they swim across from the river, did they climb over a fence? How did they get access at 0 dark 30 in the morning?" he said.

Pittsburgh police acknowledged there was only one arrest.

"Given the value of the boat, this is huge, huge. It's a big time felony. One of the officers said it could be 20 to 25 years in jail. But I think the problem is, I mean, how do you prosecute somebody who has nothing?" Kernohan said.

This yacht is owned by Michael Jennison, the CEO of Jennison Corporation in Carnegie. Jennison uses the yacht for corporate functions and family affairs. They had a cruise scheduled for Friday night, but it's obviously now canceled.

Court paperwork shows Fischer has been charged with theft by unlawful taking, receiving stolen property and defiant trespass.
